Large-scale nuclear emergency response exercises are underway in New York State, the fbi said. The exercises have been going on since 2012.

New York State is hosting a major nuclear incident drill from January 26 to 31.Residents are being urged not to panic and warned of the possible presence of troops, aircraft and people in hazmat suits.

Lisa Murkowski, who has criticized Donald Trump on multiple occasions, is vice chair of the standing committee of the Arctic Parliamentarians forum. A United States senator and a Danish lawmaker on Monday issued a joint statement hitting out at U.S. President Donald Trump's threats to acquire Greenland.

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, who represents Alaska, and Danish MP Aaja Chemnitz, who holds one of two seats in Denmark's parliament representing Greenland, said the Arctic island is "open for business, but not for sale."

Murkowski, who has criticized Trump on multiple occasions and voted to convict him on impeachment charges after the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack and who last week voted against one of his key Cabinet appointments, is vice chair of the standing committee of the Arctic Parliamentarians forum, while Chemnitz chairs the committee.

"Of course a businessman turned president would be interested. But Greenland is not for sale," Murkowski and Chemnitz said in a statement obtained by POLITICO.

"As legislators representing Greenland in Denmark and the United States, we see a better path forward. The United States, like Denmark, should recognize that the future will be defined by partnership, not ownership," they added.

Trump has insisted that the U.S. should take ownership of Greenland - a Danish territory since 1953 and a colony before that - and refused to rule out using military force or economic coercion to seize it.

"Greenland is a wonderful place. We need it for international security. And I'm sure that Denmark will come along - it's costing them a lot of money to maintain it, to keep it," the Republican leader told reporters last week on his first day in the Oval Office.

His comments triggered crisis meetings in Copenhagen and a sharp rebuke from Danish and Greenlandic leaders, who have repeatedly said the island is not up for grabs - including in a reportedly fiery 45-minute phone call between Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen earlier this month.

Murkowski and Chemnitz welcomed "increased cooperation" between Greenland and the U.S. "on defense, mineral development, trade, and our common values of freedom and democracy."

But Greenland is "an ally, not an asset," they cautioned.

"We are certain that U.S. ambitions for national security can be achieved without altering Greenland's autonomy ... The future does not require us to redraw the borders on that map, but to work harder than ever across them," Murkowski and Chemnitz said.

Fighter jets scrambled after drone sighting sparks security fear as Donald Trump backup plane lands

Fighter jets and a military helicopter were scrambled when a potential drone sighting near President Donald Trump's backup aircraft sparked security concerns over the weekend.
Air Force One, the official Air Force aircraft that carries the president of the United States, landed safely in Miami, Florida on Saturday but the POTUS backup aircraft SAM47 USAF Boeing C-32A/757 was put on a temporary hold when a possible drone was spotted around Freeway Airport.

The aircraft departed California at 21:02pm UTC, according to Flight Radar, but was delayed near Joint Base Andrews because of the mysterious drone.
Two F-16 fighter jets with the callsign Brave01 and Brave02 were scrambled alongside military helicopter Blackjack1, tasked with intercepting the TOI (Target of Interest), according to Air Traffic Control audio.

"Just be advised that we have an active scramble about 10 miles north of Andrews and just waiting on the jet to depart there … active intercept so that is the reason for the delay vector", an Air Traffic Control (ATC) officer can be heard telling SAM47.
"Blackjack1 are you guys visual with whatever you guys are looking for?" ATC asked. "Not visual with TOI (Target of Interest) at this time," Blackjack 1 responded.

ATC described the target as "a potential drone between 5 thousand and 6 thousand", later adding:
"TOI is now off your about 1 two 2 o'clock, 4 miles southbound might be in the vicinity of Freeway airport." Continuing to direct Blackjack one towards the target, ATC added:
"TOI is … you guys are either right on top of it or right underneath it? … he is indicating 60 knots so if that helps you guys?"

However, Blackjack1 repeatedly confirmed that they were unable to intercept the target until ATC revealed that the object had disappeared from their screen.
Eventually, the backup POTUS aircraft was directed to Joint Base Andrews, where it landed at 1:41am UTC.

Boeing C-32A is a modified version of Boeing 757-200 that provides transportation for US leaders including the vice president, first lady and members of the Cabinet and Congress.
The incident comes as President Trump has vowed to get answers to a series of unexplained drone sightings in parts of the US that began in November.

Fox News' Peter Doocy asked Trump on Monday: "Anything with these drones - is it anything to be worried about?" The president responded: "I would like to find out what it is and tell the people. In fact, I'd like to do that."
Referring to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Trump added: "Could we find out what that was, Susie? Why don't we find out immediately?" The president referenced how drones had been spotted over his golf club in New Jersey.

He continued: "I can't imagine it's an enemy, or there would have been, you know, people would have gotten blown up, all of them.
Maybe they were testing things. I don't know why. They wouldn't have said what it was. They had a lot of them flying over Bedminster, which is interesting."

The mysterious drone sightings, which took place in November and December, saw the fbi appealing for information.
"The fbi Newark, NJ State Police, and NJ Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness are asking for the public to report any information related to the recent sightings of possible drones flying in several areas along the Raritan River," a December 3 fbi statement said.

An fbi official later stated that around 5,000 tips had been received related to the reported drone sightings but that "less than 100 leads have been generated and deemed worthy of further investigative activity."
At the same time, a DHS official said they're "confident that many of the reported drone sightings are, in fact, manned aircraft being misidentified as drones," ABC News reports.
In mid-December, federal officials concluded the thousands of drone sightings reported in Northeastern states don't present a national public safety risk.

In a multiagency statement, the Department of Homeland Security, the fbi, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Defense said: "
Having closely examined the technical data and tips from concerned citizens, we assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and stars mistakenly reported as drones.
"We have not identified anything anomalous and do not assess the activity to date to present a national security or public safety risk over the civilian airspace in New Jersey or other states in the Northeast."

Rafael Eitan, the Israeli named recently in an alleged espionage ring in the United States, traveled in 1968 to a nuclear plant in Apollo, Pa., where large amounts of weapons-grade uranium disappeared and was allegedly diverted to Israel, documents showed today.
Eitan, a former chief of operations for the Mossad, the Israeli CIA, was one of four Israelis who received U.S. clearance to meet with officials at the NUMEC plant in Apollo on Sept. 10, 1968, according to declassified fbi documents.
Two reports on that meeting, included in thousands of pages of documents released recently under the Freedom of Information Act, listed Eitan as a chemist with the Ministry of Defense in Israel.
Anthony Cordesman, a former Pentagon official now director of an Arlington, Va., defense "think tank," said Eitan's participation in the 1968 meeting was "extremely hard evidence" that he has long been operating with Israeli intelligence in the United States.
At the time, Eitan was a member of a select Israeli intelligence unit, traditionally associated with Ariel Sharon, a leader in the hard-line Israeli Likud Party, that actively sought U.S. defense capabilities, Cordesman said.
"There is no conceivable reason for Eitan to have gone (to the Apollo plant) but for the nuclear material."
Eitan is a legendary Israeli intelligence figure who was a member of a team that snatched Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann off a Buenos Aires street in 1960 and brought him to trial in Israel.
U.S. prosecutors earlier this month said Eitan directed the Israeli operation that recruited Navy analyst Jonathan Pollard, who pleaded guilty to selling secret American documents to Israel. Pollard's wife, Anne Henderson-Pollard, also pleaded guilty to lesser charges in the espionage ring, which dated from at least June, 1984.
An fbi spokesman said that the NUMEC investigation was closed but that he could not comment because the Pollard case is still pending. Justice Department spokesmen also declined immediate comment.
Since the Pollard affair broke with Pollard's arrest last November, straining U.S.-Israeli relations, Eitan has been given the post of chairman of a government-owned chemical conglomerate.
His participation in the alleged ring, as well as that of Aviem (Avi) Sella, an Israeli air force brigadier general identified as Pollard's first "handler," has prompted U.S. concern about whether the ring was a "renegade" operation as the Israelis have claimed and whether that government has cooperated fully in the U.S. investigation.
The small Apollo processing plant was the subject of a decades-long U.S. investigation into the alleged diversion of hundreds of pounds of enriched uranium to Israel. Code-named project "Divert," the probe was first launched in 1966 when the government found that 206 pounds of enriched uranium vanished from the plant without a trace.
The documents show that the fbi, the CIA and the now-defunct Atomic Energy Commission spent 15 years trying to discover what happened to the uranium, investigating allegations that it was somehow passed to Israel by Zalman Shapiro, a Jewish scientist who headed the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corp. Later inquiries also examined whether U.S. officials may have known about the diversion and let it happen.
During the time Shapiro headed NUMEC, 267 kilograms, or 587 pounds of uranium turned up missing.

Israeli Spy Visited A-Plant Where Uranium Vanished
Rafael Eitan, the Israeli named recently in an alleged espionage ring in the United States, traveled in 1968 to a nuclear plant in Apollo, Pa., where large amounts of weapons-grade uranium disappeared and was allegedly diverted to Israel, documents showed today.
Eitan, a former chief of operations for the Mossad, the Israeli CIA, was one of four Israelis who received U.S. clearance to meet with officials at the NUMEC plant in Apollo on Sept. 10, 1968, according to declassified fbi documents.
Two reports on that meeting, included in thousands of pages of documents released recently under the Freedom of Information Act, listed Eitan as a chemist with the Ministry of Defense in Israel.
Anthony Cordesman, a former Pentagon official now director of an Arlington, Va., defense "think tank," said Eitan's participation in the 1968 meeting was "extremely hard evidence" that he has long been operating with Israeli intelligence in the United States.
At the time, Eitan was a member of a select Israeli intelligence unit, traditionally associated with Ariel Sharon, a leader in the hard-line Israeli Likud Party, that actively sought U.S. defense capabilities, Cordesman said.
"There is no conceivable reason for Eitan to have gone (to the Apollo plant) but for the nuclear material."
Eitan is a legendary Israeli intelligence figure who was a member of a team that snatched Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann off a Buenos Aires street in 1960 and brought him to trial in Israel.
U.S. prosecutors earlier this month said Eitan directed the Israeli operation that recruited Navy analyst Jonathan Pollard, who pleaded guilty to selling secret American documents to Israel. Pollard's wife, Anne Henderson-Pollard, also pleaded guilty to lesser charges in the espionage ring, which dated from at least June, 1984.
An fbi spokesman said that the NUMEC investigation was closed but that he could not comment because the Pollard case is still pending. Justice Department spokesmen also declined immediate comment.
Since the Pollard affair broke with Pollard's arrest last November, straining U.S.-Israeli relations, Eitan has been given the post of chairman of a government-owned chemical conglomerate.
His participation in the alleged ring, as well as that of Aviem (Avi) Sella, an Israeli air force brigadier general identified as Pollard's first "handler," has prompted U.S. concern about whether the ring was a "renegade" operation as the Israelis have claimed and whether that government has cooperated fully in the U.S. investigation.
The small Apollo processing plant was the subject of a decades-long U.S. investigation into the alleged diversion of hundreds of pounds of enriched uranium to Israel. Code-named project "Divert," the probe was first launched in 1966 when the government found that 206 pounds of enriched uranium vanished from the plant without a trace.
The documents show that the fbi, the CIA and the now-defunct Atomic Energy Commission spent 15 years trying to discover what happened to the uranium, investigating allegations that it was somehow passed to Israel by Zalman Shapiro, a Jewish scientist who headed the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corp. Later inquiries also examined whether U.S. officials may have known about the diversion and let it happen.
During the time Shapiro headed NUMEC, 267 kilograms, or 587 pounds of uranium turned up missing.

ICE Confirms Operation Against Illegal Migrants in Chicago

Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Sunday that it has launched coordinated "targeted operations" in Chicago to enforce immigration laws and "preserve public safety and national security," Newsweek reported.

Since Trump's return to office, ICE has been granted expanded authority as the administration reversed a long-standing policy that prohibited agents from carrying out raids at sensitive locations, including churches, hospitals, and schools.

ICE raids have been confirmed in multiple states nationwide since Trump's inauguration, including in Minnesota, California, and Colorado.

The ICE statement on Sunday said that an interdepartmental collaboration involving the fbi; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; Drug Enforcement Administration; Customs and Border Protection; and U.S. Marshals Service had started "enhanced targeted operations today in Chicago to enforce U.S. immigration law and preserve public safety and national security by keeping potentially dangerous criminal aliens out of our communities."

Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove told The Associated Press, "We will support everyone at the federal, state, and local levels who joins this critical mission to take back our communities. We will use all available tools to address obstruction and other unlawful impediments to our efforts to protect the homeland. Most importantly, we will not rest until the work is done."

It is not known how many people were taken into ICE custody on Sunday.

Vice President JD Vance told CBS News' "Face the Nation" on Sunday, "We're going to enforce immigration law. We're going to protect the American people. Donald Trump promised to do that."

He added that in regard to the updated order permitting ICE to enter sensitive spaces, "we empowered law enforcement to enforce the law … I desperately hope it has a chilling effect on illegal immigrants coming into our country."

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday that if is violent criminals "they're picking up, we're all for it … [but] they're going after people who are law-abiding, who are holding down jobs, who have families here, who may have been here for a decade or two decades. Why are we going after them? These are not people who are causing problems in our country."

The Lincoln Project, a conservative group that criticizes Trump, posted on X: "Trump ordered MAGA in Congress to kill the border bill because he never wanted to solve the immigration crisis, he wanted a spectacle. ICE raids and mass deportations send a very clear and hateful message he concocted from the start."

Additional immigration raids are expected to take place across the country over the next few weeks.
