A flu virus risk worth taking

A deadly influenza virus has circulated widely in birds in recent years, decimating flocks but rarely spreading to humans. Nonetheless, because of its persistence in bird flocks, this highly pathogenic avian influenza virus has loomed as a major public health threat. Seasonal influenza kills less than 1 percent of the people it infects. In contrast, human infections with H5N1, though exceedingly rare, are fatal in more than half of cases. Should this virus mutate in a way that allows it to be transmitted as efficiently among people as seasonal influenza viruses are, it could take an unprecedented toll on human life.
A number of important scientific and public health questions regarding this virus remain unanswered, including the likelihood of such mutations arising and the mechanisms by which they may occur. Two recent studies co-funded by the National Institutes of Health have shed light on how this potentially grave human health threat could become a reality. Working carefully with influenza viruses they have engineered in isolated biocontainment laboratories, scientists inEuropeand the United States have identified several mechanisms by which the virus might evolve to transmit efficiently in the ferret, the best animal model for human influenza infection. This research has allowed identification of genetic pathways by which such a virus could better adapt to transmission among people. This laboratory virus does not exist in nature. There is, however, considerable concern that such a virus could evolve naturally. We cannot predict whether it or something similar will arise naturally, nor when or where it might appear.
Given these uncertainties, important information and insights can come from generating a potentially dangerous virus in the laboratory. While the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention provide excellent public health surveillance for novel influenza strains, influenza outbreaks still occur suddenly and in unexpected places. The recent H1N1 pandemic exemplifies the problem: In 2009, a new influenza virus emerged. It was shown to have originated from an animal reservoir, and it spread so rapidly that it strained the pharmaceutical industry's capacity to prepare vaccines fast enough to blunt its spread. We do not fully understand the underlying factors that allow influenza viruses to be transmitted efficiently in humans after they emerge from different species. The ferret transmission studies were intended in part to fill these important gaps in knowledge.
Understanding the biology of influenza virus transmission has implications for outbreak prediction, prevention and treatment. In defining the mutations required for mammalian transmission, public health officials are provided with genetic signatures that, like fingerprints, could help scientists more readily identify newly emergent, potentially harmful viruses, track their spread and detect threatening outbreaks. The ability to identify such viruses even a few months faster than by conventional surveillance provides critical time to slow or stop an outbreak. For example, the CDC implements public health protective measures and stockpiles antiviral drugs. Identifying threatening viruses can also facilitate the early stages of manufacturing vaccines that protect against such a virus in advance of an outbreak.
In addition, determining the molecular Achilles' heel of these viruses can allow scientists to identify novel antiviral drug targets that could be used to prevent infection in those at risk or to better treat those who become infected. Decades of experience tells us that disseminating information gained through biomedical research to legitimate scientists and health officials provides a critical foundation for generating appropriate countermeasures and, ultimately, protecting the public health.
The question is whether benefits of such research outweigh risks. The answer is not simple. A highly pathogenic bird flu virus transmissible in humans could arise in ways not predicted by laboratory studies. And it is not clear whether this laboratory virus would behave in humans as it does in ferrets.

nabel left Sanofi at the same time that Yong-Jun Liu (Sanofi's Head of Research) did - October 2020. Yong-Jun Liu went back to China to "be closer to family".

During his tenure, nabel saw restructuring efforts under multiple CEOs, including Paul Hudson's plan to exit R&D in diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
His next steps are unclear, but with the spokesperson saying nabel is "leaving" Sanofi rather than "retiring," it's conceivable that he'll end up at a small biotech company like so many other Big Pharma execs before him.
His departure coincides with that of Roger Perlmutter, M.D., Ph.D., who will leave his post as Merck's R&D chief Jan. 1. After seven years at the Big Pharma, Perlmutter will be replaced by Dean Li, M.D., Ph.D., currently senior vice president of discovery sciences and translational medicine at Merck Research Labs."

Was checking out the DoS FOIA reading room using Fauci as search term. Stumbled on Gary Nable, Director of Vaccines @ NIH. Followed the wife, Elizabeth "Betsy". Searching the internet, came up with "follow the wives" Elizabeth Nable, former President of Brigham and Young Women's hospital.

Elizabeth admired the calm way in which Gary handled the situation, and a year later they were married.

Dr. nabel was previously a member of Moderna's Board of Directors from December 2015 to July 2020. She resigned from the Moderna Board in July 2020 to alleviate any potential concern about the conduct or the outcome of the COVID-19 vaccine trial when Brigham and Women's Hospital was identified by NIH as one of the clinical sites for the Phase 3 trial. Betsy nabel, M.D., is stepping down as the president of Brigham and Women's Hospital to enter biotech. nabel is reportedly set to join her husband, the former chief scientific officer of Sanofi, at a stealthy new biotech startup.
Brigham appointed nabel, a cardiologist and biomedical researcher, as its president in 2010. During her 11-year spell at the head of Brigham, nabel tried to increase the hospital's role in developing health technologies, including by establishing a Translational Accelerator to support researchers with ideas for new interventions. …

The action failed to quell the criticism. nabel came under fire for selling $8.5 million in Moderna stock in the run-up to her resignation from the board. Like other Moderna shareholders, nabel benefited from surges in the biotech's stock as it emerged as a leader in the COVID-19 vaccine race. This week, the Lown Institute included nabel in the "Shkreli Awards," which recognize "the worst actors of the US health system" for "profiteering and dysfunction in healthcare."

May 25, 2016:
Dr. Elizabeth nabel, president of Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and one of the nation's most prominent medical executives, was part of a National Football League effort to "steer funding" for a landmark concussion study away from a group of respected brain researchers, according to a congressional committee report that was sharply critical of the league.
The report found that the NFL "inappropriately attempted to influence" the National Institutes of Health's grant selection process.
nabel, who also serves as the NFL's chief health and medical advisor, told STAT she "had no intention of influencing" the NIH process. "I made my neutrality quite clear," she said in a statement.

NY Mag admits Fauci "hot-wired" coronavirus with gain-of-function engineering

After a year of denial, the mainstream media is finally coming to terms with the fact that Anthony Fauci is responsible for "hot-wiring" the Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) with experimental gain-of-function technology, which ultimately turned it into a global "pandemic."

Were it not for the artificial insertion of amino acids and other additives by Fauci and his team, the novel Chinese virus never would have gained the traction it did in terms of being a human-to-human contagion.

In its natural form, the unmodified bat coronavirus would have stayed within the animal kingdom. Instead, thanks to Fauci, it morphed into a tool that is now being used to destroy the global economy and herd the masses straight into the new world order.

"These gain-of-function experiments were an important part of the NIH's approach to vaccine development, and Anthony Fauci was reluctant to stop funding them," writes Nicholson Baker for the Intelligencer.

"He and Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, along with Gary nabel, NIAID (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) director of vaccine research, published an opinion piece in the Washington Post in which they contend that the ferret flu experiments, and others like them, were 'a risk worth taking.'"

Fauci and his team wrote at the time that "[i]mportant information and insights can come from generating a potentially dangerous virus in the laboratory." Such research, they added, can further "help delineate the principles of virus transmission between species."

Fauci told reporter that "nature is the worst bioterrorist"

In an interview with news reporters, Fauci once contended that "nature is the worst bioterrorist," effectively shirking all responsibility for his involvement in weaponizing it against humanity.

Fauci was a key player in changing the way that NIH-funded research was conducted. Under his leadership, the focus shifted to the weaponization of nature, whether it involved anthrax, AIDS, or some other bioweapon developed by the deep state.

After the 9/11 attacks, Fauci dramatically increased his agency's "anti-terror" budget from $53 million in 2001 to a whopping $1.7 billion in 2003. At that time, he set aside his efforts to develop an AIDS vaccine and shifted focus to perfecting the weaponization of brucellosis, anthrax, tularemia, and the plague.

"We are making this the highest priority," Fauci said at the time. "We are really marshaling all available resources."

Fauci was also concerned that it was taking far too long to develop new vaccines. His stated goal was to develop new "vaccine systems" and "vaccine platforms" that could be tailored to develop new vaccine drugs within a day.

"Our goal within the next 20 years is 'bug to drug' in 24 hours," Fauci said. "This would specifically meet the challenge of genetically engineered bioagents."

The first "Project Bioshield" contract, as it is called, was awarded by Fauci to VaxGen, a California pharmaceutical company. Fauci gave the company $878 million in taxpayer money to create new anthrax vaccines.

Interestingly, it has been almost exactly 20 years since Fauci made those statements, and here we are with President Donald Trump's "Operation Warp Speed" program, which fast-tracked the release of Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccines at speeds never before seen.

When challenged by some 750 scientists in a letter protesting the direction in which he was taking the NIH, Fauci doubled down and insisted that the money needed to be spent "on biodefense."

"We disagree with the notion that biodefense concerns are of 'low public-health significance,'" he added.

The Forgotten Syrian Christian Towns Under Attack on Border with Idleb and Northern Hama

Two days ago I was in the Syrian Christian town of Al Skeilbiyyeh that has endured sustained attacks from the various terrorist groups backed by the U.S Coalition. These groups are embedded in the countryside bordering Al Skeilbiyyeh. In the last two weeks they have targeted schools, residential areas and civilian districts with 25 rockets/GRAD missiles, causing significant material damage to homes and infrastructure. Children have been told they cannot go to school during these precarious times.

I met with the courageous commander of the volunteer National Defence Forces in this beautiful town, nabel Alabdalla - and he took me to see the devastation caused by just one rocket that decimated a neighbourhood.

#AlSkeilbiyyeh and the neighbouring town of Mhardeh represent the brave resistance of these besieged peoples against violent and brutal sectarianism and extremism. They are the light in the darkness that has been introduced into their land by the imperialist predators. God bless them and protect them.

"This time, the rockets that landed on this area were unusual and very destructive. We think they have used C4 or another prohibited explosive because this extent of destruction is not from a normal GRAD rocket

This is the result of the Gulf blood money and Erdogan's policy, his treacherous policy. International mercenaries are targeting civilians in the steadfast city of al-Skeilbiyyeh to drive us from this land.

We send a message to the world that we are staying on this land no matter what they do, we will remain steadfast with the determination of the heroic Syrian Arab army

Our people confirm this because they will stay in their homes neighbouring the international terrorism that is gathered in the countryside of Idleb. We confirm that we always carry the candles of love and peace in one hand and the other hand is on the trigger, we will not leave this land.

Look, there are children toys here, there are homes here, what else is here? Is there a military base here? Where is Europe about this? Why is the Vatican silent? Why is the international community silent and the "humanitarian organisations? Would they accept this landing on their homes?

Many women who call themselves feminists don't want to understand conservative women. Reynolds says she was expendable and so was Brown. Both were painted by Labor and a large section of the media, mostly female journalists, as villains.

Reynolds is right that conservative women are often treated as invisible by so-called feminists in the media. The former defence minister had some pointed words for Annabel Crabb and her ABC Ms Represented program that aired last year. Reynolds told me that Crabb's show about women making strides in Australian politics was so skewed towards celebrating women on the left that she texted Crabb as follows: "Ms Represented may be interested to know that my side of politics has now had two female defence ministers and two foreign ministers, the first time two defence portfolio ministers at the same time were women, the first and second time Australia was represented at AUSMIN by two women, the first (female) home affairs minister, the current (female) attorney-general. The first time three women are on the national security committee ... and the list goes on.

"You have missed what is hidden in plain sight," wrote Reynolds. "The first time EVER there are eight women in cabinet, all of whom are doing amazing work - in our own way - comfortably in our own skins as female leaders."

Reynolds told me it was as if these eight women in cabinet were inconvenient truths to Crabb, and history stopped at Julie Bishop.

Exhibitions of performance art in parliament are hardly uncommon. But some Labor women, Gallagher and Wong included, are up to their eyeballs in the toxic culture they complain so loudly about. Their cliquey, catty feminism made a target of Kimberley Kitching, too. Who can forget Wong's cruel gibe to Kitching in 2018 during a policy debate to the effect: "Well, if you had children, you might understand why there is a climate emergency"? Wong apologised to Kitching only when the exchange was made public.

So the lesson is this: if you genuinely want to establish the highest standards of workplace behaviour, treat your political opponents with respect, not just your political girlfriends.

It's like free speech. Your belief in it is real only when you recognise the right of your opponents to speak.

Police Minister Kate Worden has called on liquor retailers to come together to stamp out the "black market" secondary supply of alcohol seen as a root cause of crime in Alice Springs.

Ms Worden met with Central Australian liquor retailers interested in stemming the flow of crime, as part of a two-day visit to the Red Centre.

It comes as the Alice Springs crime wave continues, with businesses broken into, people being attacked and vehicles stolen.

Despite an increased police presence in recent months as part of Operation Drina, which has resulted in 300 arrests, anti-social behaviour is still prevalent.

The secondary supply of alcohol is one of the root causes in Central Australia with retailers and the government working on ways to reduce the illegal trade.

Major retailers Woolworths and Coles have already taken action in combating liquor abuse by removing one litre bottles from shelves.

A spokesman for Woolworths' bottle shop arm, Endeavour Group, said the company was "committed to working with all parties to address this issue and will continue to engage through the Alice Springs liquor accord".

"We talked to them about the issues of secondary supply and retailers are meeting to address that issue," Ms Worden said.

"It's a clear message also that if anyone in Alice Springs or beyond knows of someone supplying alcohol to vulnerable people to come forward and give that intelligence to the police.

"There is clearly a black market going on in Alice Springs, and if anyone knows about that please let us know, let our police or your local member know.

"But at the moment we're allowing industry to think about ways that it can help us get a change."

Ms Worden's visit also comes on the back of Alice Springs mayor Matt Paterson calling on the federal government to send urgent help in the form of the Australian Defence Force and Australian Federal Police.

However, the federal government has since knocked back calls to send the ADF to the crime besieged town.

And the Police Minister also confirmed there was no appetite from the NT government to turn Alice Springs into a "police state", even for a short time.

Instead Operation Drina, which has been extended until the end of January, will be reviewed at the end of the month to see if it will continue further.

"There is no support for (the ADF coming in) within the Northern Territory government, and there does seem to be very little support for that among our federal members," Ms Worden said.

"We're not creating a police state here in Alice Springs, our police have done a fabulous job with 300 arrests in seven weeks and our prisons are full.

"We need to deal with the root cause of the problem, if we can reduce the amount of alcohol here in Alice Springs we know that will have a significant impact.

"We already know on Sunday when outlets are reduced to only two, police work related to alcohol related harm halves, so if you stem the flow of alcohol you can really attack these problems.

"We need to invest in the root causes and invest in housing, access to services and access to real, meaningful jobs and skills which is why we're focused on sustainable opportunities in the bush."

Confidential can reveal Alexandra Keating and Sanders are an item, and have appeared in a double portrait that was entered in the Archibald Prize, whose winner is announced on Friday.

The portrait, titled Alexandra Keating and Rupert Sanders on a Yacht in Sydney Harbour, is by artist Oliver Watts who is friends with both Alexandra and her sister Katherine Keating. Katherine was drawn into the Jeffrey Epstein sex scandal when she was filmed farewelling Prince Andrew at the front door of Epstein's New York mansion when he was staying there in 2010.

There is no suggestion Katherine Keating, who was reportedly friends with the Duke, knew of any wrongdoing by Epstein.

Rupert Sanders is controversial in that he made international headlines when he and actor Kristen Stewart were photographed in an intimate embrace in 2012.

Sanders was at the time married to model Liberty Ross, with whom he has two children. The couple divorced in 2014.

Stewart was in a relationship with her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson. Both Stewart and Sanders issued separate public apologies after the images were printed.

Oliver Watts told Arts Editor Elizabeth Fortescue that he joined Sanders and Alexandra on a boat at Rose Bay in January or February this year.

The couple had agreed to let Watts paint them, and Sanders stepped in to direct what sort of pose they should take for their portrait.

"Obviously Rupert is very creative," Watts said.

Sanders directed Snow White and The Huntsman in 2012, which starred Kristen Stewart. He also directed the film adaptation of the sci-fi manga franchise Ghost in the Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson.

Watts would not comment on whether the boat in the painting belongs to Paul Keating, or whether the former PM was on board that day. But he did reveal his admiration for Alexandra.

"She's really a special person - very clever, very charismatic," Watts said.

"She is happy that Rupert is her boyfriend."

The painting is "a tender conversation piece of a couple", Watts said.

Alexandra's father was himself the subject of a very handsome painting by Brian Westwood which won the Archibald in 1992 when Keating was PM.

While Watts' painting of Keating's daughter and her boyfriend was not selected as a finalist for the $100,000 Archibald Prize, it was chosen for the Salon des Refuses. The Salon is the "alternative Archibald" exhibition, chosen from among the Archibald rejects and shown at the S.H. Ervin Gallery in The Rocks.

The Archibald Prize will be announced on Friday at the Art Gallery of NSW. Both the Archibald and Salon des Refuses open on Saturday.

Notables in the running for the Archibald this year include broadcaster Adam Spencer (painted by Samuel Rush Condon), documentary star Dujuan Hoosen (by Blak Douglas, aka Adam Hill), journalist David Marr (by Nicholas Harding), journalist Annabel Crabb (by Jane Guthleben), chef Adam Liaw (by Yoshio Honjo), ALP leader Anthony Albanese (by James Powditch), writer Bruce Pascoe (by Craig Ruddy) and Magda Szubanski (by Wendy Sharpe).

Ich hab mal irgendwo im Web vor langer Zeit ein Video gesehen, wo von einem Heli angeblich was gesendet wurde und die Leute dann panisch aus dem Panzer rausflüchteten. War glaub ich im Kuweit- oder Irakkrieg. Da wurde behauptet, daß die Leute im Panzer aufgrund der Sendefrequenz grundlos Panikattacken bekommen haben.

DEN HAAG - Premier Rutte 'betreurt' de ophef die is ontstaan nadat in de ouderenzorg de richtlijn voor het dragen van mondkapjes in augustus zo stilletjes zijn aangepast. "Dat had niet zo gemoeten." Hij stelt dat het tot 'onnodige onrust' heeft geleid. "Ik wil hier echt uitspreken dat ik dat betreur."

Rutte deed zijn uitspraken dinsdag in het staartje van het debat in de Tweede Kamer over het coronabeleid. Zowel hij als minister De Jonge (Volksgezondheid) kregen in dat debat stevig de wind van voren, vooral over het krakkemikkige testbeleid, maar dus ook het gehannes met het al dan niet dragen van mondkapjes in de ouderenzorg.

Lange tijd gold daarvoor de regel dat als zorgmedewerkers 1,5 meter afstand konden houden van hun cliënt en alleen 'vluchtig contact' hoefden te hebben, zij volgens de door het RIVM opgestelde richtlijnen geen mondkapjes hoefden te dragen. Bij het personeel leidde dat tot onbegrip en onrust. Vluchtig contact in de zorg, bestaat volgens velen namelijk niet.

Medio augustus werd de richtlijn plots aangepast, maar dat gebeurde nagenoeg geruisloos. De nieuwe richtlijn werd opgestuurd naar zorginstellingen, maar dat de inhoud ervan zo drastisch was gewijzigd bleef onvermeld. Opeens moesten mensen wèl een mondkapje gaan dragen bij 'vluchtig contact'.

Volgens premier Rutte werd de richtlijn aangepast om de regels gelijk te trekken met de ziekenhuiszorg, waar al wel mondkapjes werden uitgedeeld in vergelijkbare situaties.

Veel partijen in de Tweede Kamer geloven maar weinig van deze uitleg en menen eerder dat de oude richtlijn gewoon een misser was van het RIVM. Rutte wil daar absoluut niet aan. Wel laat hij nu dus weten dat de ophef na het aanpassen van de richtlijn hem dus betreurt.

Hij wil 'betekenisvolle wijzigingen' van de richtlijnen voortaan 'expliciet onder de aandacht brengen'. "Ik wou dat echt nog zeggen. En dat ik die onrust bij de medewerkers in de zorg echt betreur."

De tweede coronagolf in Nederland is met meer dan tweeduizend positieve testen per dag volop aan de gang, precies een half jaar na de eerste. En in het eerste grote debat in de Tweede Kamer in die nieuwe omstandigheden werd voor het kabinet-Rutte III op dinsdagavond pijnlijk duidelijk: nu de publieke steun voor het coronabeleid lijkt af te nemen, is ook politiek gezien alles anders.

Zelfs bij de coalitiepartijen groeit de twijfel over de aanpak van het kabinet. Snappen mensen het allemaal nog wel? Leidt de onduidelijkheid niet juist tot acties op sociale media als #ikdoenietmeermee? Die hashtag werd maandagavond door tientallen artiesten en influencers op sociale media geplaatst, uit protest tegen de coronamaatregelen.

Ook de coalitiepartijen zien dat afnemende steun te maken heeft met de manier waarop het kabinet de crisis aanpakt. D66-fractievoorzitter Rob Jetten zei: "We moeten met zorg naar het kabinetsbeleid kijken." De ChristenUnie vroeg om "het eerlijke verhaal" in plaats van "stoere taal". Fractievoorzitter Pieter Heerma van het CDA, de partij van minister Hugo de Jonge (Volksgezondheid), vond ook dat er nu "genoeg testcapaciteit" had moeten zijn. Fractievoorzitter Klaas Dijkhoff van premier Mark Ruttes eigen VVD kan zich voorstellen, zei hij, dat medewerkers in de verpleeghuiszorg "zich tekortgedaan voelen". Die hadden van het RIVM eerst niet en daarna ineens wel te horen gekregen dat ze tijdens hun werk mondkapjes moesten gebruiken, zoals Nieuwsuur vorige week onthulde.

"Als je het over kon doen", zei Dijkhoff ook, "had je die beschermingsmiddelen eerder breed beschikbaar willen stellen." SGP-leider Kees van der Staaij, op wie Rutte III bijna altijd kon rekenen voor steun, had het over de "schimmigheid" en een "woordenbrij" van het kabinet over de mondkapjes in de verpleeghuizen. En over de tweede coronagolf zei hij: "Zijn we voldoende voorbereid? Nee, als je kijkt naar de testcapaciteit en de bron- en contactonderzoeken van de GGD's."

'De dijk' tegen de tweede golf
Het kabinet had het eerder steeds over "de dijk" die er zou komen tegen een tweede "golf": dat iedereen met klachten zich meteen moest kunnen testen en de GGD snel en zorgvuldig zou nagaan met wie een positief getest persoon de dagen ervoor was omgegaan. Maar op de dag van de meteorologische herfst, stroomden de teststraten over: de GGD maakte dinsdag bekend dat nu 10.000 mensen per dag zich niet kunnen laten testen. En in 17 van de 25 GGD-regio's kan het bron- en contactonderzoek niet meer volledig worden uitgevoerd, zieke mensen moeten zelf de mensen uit hun omgeving gaan vertellen over het besmettingsrisico.

Fears have been raised that the first minister and his administration may be scared to introduce legislation over the next month to not scare off the Scottish Greens.

Humza Yousaf is now running a "zombie government" it has been claimed while the SNP await the results of the Scottish Greens' Bute House Agreement vote. It means that the nationalist administration will struggle to push through any legislation and will be looking to placate the environmentalists.

This was shown on Tuesday when the first minister's flagship justice reforms barely made it through the first stage of debate with only 60 MSPs voting for it, compared to 62 abstaining. It included a mini rebellion of Nat MSPs, as Kate Forbes, Fergus Ewing, Annabelle Ewing, Michelle Thomson, Ivan McKee and Christine Grahame all refused to vote for it.

And the Scottish Government was blasted over its response to the Cass Review as it failed to announce anything of something substance, with rivals suggesting this was to placate the Greens whose grassroots membership raged about the pause on puberty blockers to those under-18.

Now, concerns have been raised that Mr Yousaf's administration will be in a state of "paralysis" until a decision is made on the Bute House Agreement. The first minister outright refused to give his own party a vote, telling journalists on Wednesday it was "not needed or wanted" despite growing calls from some Nats for this to happen.

Opponents have accused him of creating a vacuum which will have an impact on the current administration as it will be too worried to put forward anything controversial. Scottish Tory chairman Craig Hoy said: "Scotland can't afford to endure weeks of a zombie government while Green members decide on the future of their pact with the SNP.

"This coalition of chaos has been a disaster for Scotland and it's a measure of how painfully weak Humza Yousaf is that he's now at the mercy of another party's vote. If he had any backbone, he'd be pulling the plug on the Bute House Agreement himself rather than leaving the country in limbo while others determine whether he leads a majority or minority government.

"The anti-growth Greens should never have been invited into government in the first place and so long as the First Minister is desperately trying to placate them - as he did with the vacuous ministerial statement on the Cass review - Scotland is in a state of paralysis."

Many commentators have claimed that it would be another humiliation for Mr Yousaf to have agreement collapse around him without him even being involved. He has yet to show leadership since being appointed, failing to distance himself from Nicola Sturgeon despite the scandals embroiling her.

Scottish Labour business manager Martin Whitfield said: "Any shred of credibility the Scottish Greens had left has been abandoned with Scotland's 2030 climate targets." Former SNP minister Ash Regan lodged a no confidence motion in Mr Harvie due his failure to accept the Cass Review, but it is unlikely to even be debated due to a lack of support from other parties.

A Scottish Government source told the Daily Mail: "The Scottish Government was urging calm, and for people to use the time and space between last week and the Green vote in May to consider the issue in a dispassionate manner: more light, less rushing to judgment in the heat of the moment. I'd say it's important not to make the end of the BHA a self-fulfilling prophecy."

To prevent leaks, the codename for the takeover of Xstrata by Glencore was "Everest". The name was apt - both Sir John Bond, the chairman of Xstrata, and Simon Murray, the chairman of Glencore, are keen mountaineers.

Bond's daughter Annabelle is an accomplished mountaineer who has scaled Everest - a feat that prompted him to visit the base camp.

Bond, who is best known for his four decade career at HSBC, is to become chairman of the enlarged mining and trading organisation. An international banker, his HSBC career began in Hong Kong where he arrived having earned his sea passage from California by mopping floors on the ship.

It was not immediately clear what role would be handed to Murray, who once sat on the board of Vodafone, where Bond has also been chairman. Murray caused a row over sexism shortly after he was appointed chairman of Glencore to help facilitate its stock market flotation, when he said women were a risk to hire because they took nine months off to have children.

Murray and Bond, both septuagenarians, are thought to be well acquainted through connections in Hong Kong, though sources close to the deal insisted they were bit part players in the talks. The real drivers were Ivan Glasenberg, chief executive of Glencore, and his counterpart Mick Davis. Despite the fact that Glencore is in effect taking over Xstrata, Davis comes out top as chief executive with Glasenberg as his deputy. The pair have known each other since their days at Witwatersrand University in South Africa but have not always seen eye to eye.

Until last year Glencore was kept private, away from the glare of the stock market, while Xstrata was a public company embarking on high profile acquisitions. Glencore, which owns 34% of Xstrata, made life tricky for Davis during a rights issue in which it refused to participate in the cash call.

The flotation of Glencore last year marked the beginnings of the rehabilitation of Tony Hayward, the former chief executive of BP whose reputation was undermined by the Gulf of Mexico disaster. He became a non-executive director of Glencore as the company listed, and then popped up as a partner to the billionaire financier Nat Rothschild in an oil venture called Vallares. There is speculation Hayward will take on the crucial role of senior independent director of the enlarged company, though it was not clear last night whether he had secured that role over David Rough, the former fund manager who holds the same position at Xstrata.

The Rothshild connections run deep. Rothschild is a personal friend of Glasenberg's. Before Glencore appointed Murray as chairman, Glasenberg called Rothschild to obtain Murray's mobile phone number.

Meanwhile, Glasenberg sits on the board of Rusal, the aluminium group run by Rothschild's close contact Oleg Deripaska and where Glencore and Rothschild are leading investors. Rothschild was also a pre-flotation investor in Glencore, while the prospectus of Rothschild's coal mining group Vallar mentions Glencore 73 times, an indication of the importance of the trading group's long-term marketing deals with the group's assets.

JOHANNESBURG, Jan 31 (Reuters) - South Africa's rand firmed on Monday, regaining some ground after weakening last week when the country's central bank signalled a gradual pace of policy tightening and expectations grew for aggressive U.S. rate hikes.

At 1529 GMT, the rand ZAR=D3 traded at 15.4700 against the dollar, 0.83% firmer than its previous close.

Last week, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) raised its main lending rate by 25 basis points in a "measured" move, but its forward guidance was less hawkish than the market had positioned for.

In contrast, bets for U.S. rate hikes increased on a hawkish shift by the Federal Reserve.

"Market expectations on interest rates are likely to eventually become more rational, but sensitivities remain high this quarter," Annabel Bishop, a Chief Economist at Investec, wrote in a note.

Focus in the week remained on central banks, with key Australian, UK and European central bank meetings taking place in the days ahead.

Locally, the trade surplus narrowed to 30.14 billion rand ($1.94 billion) in December from a surplus of 35.83 billion rand in November.

In the equity market, stocks were buoyed by mobile operator MTN Group MTNJ.J, tech stocks and a rise in commodity prices, with the Johannesburg All-Share index .JALSH up 1.16% to 74,304 points, while the Top-40 index .JTOPI climbed 1.19% to 67,820 points.

MTN topped the blue-chip index, surging 10.11% to 191.97 rand, a just over six-year high. Its biggest operation, MTN Nigeria Communications MTNN.LG, reported a strong set of full-year financial results on Friday, with margin improvement across the board and a spike in profits.

Oil rose on Monday as a supply shortage and political tensions in Eastern Europe and the Middle East put prices on track for their biggest monthly gain in almost a year.

It's the first child for 39-year-old banking heiress Kate and her entrepreneur boyfriend, 32, who were first linked in 2018.

The joyous news will no doubt bring some comfort to the family, coming two years after the tragic death of Kate's teenage daughter, Iris, who lost her life in a buggy accident at the family farm.

Kate's financier ex-husband, Ben Goldsmith confirmed the news to the Daily Mail's Richard Eden, announcing: 'It's incredibly happy news. Everyone is over the moon.

'I'm so excited to meet the little boy tomorrow afternoon.'

Ben's film producer sister, Jemima Goldsmith, then shared a picture of herself snuggling up to newborn on Instagram, gushing that it was 'the happiest day'.

In the photos, Jemima debuted a large Iris tattoo in honour of her late niece.

Another adorable snap showed the newborn, who has not yet been named, wearing a mini Queen's Park Rangers kit, no doubt the influence on keen football fan Paul.

Kate's baby joy comes two years after the tragic death of her daughter, whom she shared with ex-husband Ben.

Iris, who was the eldest of Kate's three children with Ben, was killed in a 'freak accident' at the age of 15 when her off-road Polaris Mule buggy overturned at the Somerset farm owned by her father.

She was supported through the tragedy by her boyfriend, with a friend telling The Daily Mail: 'Paul has been a tower of strength to Kate since Iris's death'.

Paul is no stranger to tragedy himself, as the entrepreneur was 15 himself when both of his parents were killed in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami while the family was on holiday in Sri Lanka.

He and brother, Rob then 17, survived the disaster which killed more than 225,000 people. The pair have since set up the trendy ethical clothing brand Gandys.

Meanwhile Kate's ex Ben has also gone on to welcome a child following the tragic loss of their daughter.

Ben, 40, welcomed his third child with his second wife, model turned society caterer Jemima Jones, 34, last April.

They called their daughter Vita Iris, in honour of her late big sister.

'We named her Vita, which means life, because she managed against the odds to cling on to hers after a very difficult start to life,' he said at the time.

'And her middle name is Iris, after her guardian angel big sister.'

Both Ben and Kate have spoken publicly about their devastation following their daughter's death.

Both shared moving Instagram posts on the six month anniversary of her passing.

At the time Ben wrote: 'You will always be a marvel to us, my Irie. One of life's champions. What's life without champions? We're struggling to make sense of ours without you.'

Ben is the son of late billionaire tycoon Sir James Goldsmith and younger brother of Environment Minister Lord (Zac) Goldsmith and television producer Jemima Goldsmith.

His mother, Lady Annabel, inspired the name of legendary Mayfair nightclub Annabel's.

Ben and Kate separated in 2012 when Kate began a relationship with American rapper Jay Electronica, real name Timothy Elpadaro Thedford.

In an acrimonious break-up, Ben is said to have slapped her and kicked a child's toy at her after discovering texts between the pair, receiving a caution from police.

The row escalated on Twitter, as Electronica called Goldsmith a 'f** hypocrite' and threatened to pay him a visit.

Ben also posted online to mock his wife for hiring a PR firm, saying: 'How about focusing on her devastated children?'

Jay and Kate then separated in 2014 and the rapper moved back to the United States, moving out of the London mews house where Kate would spend her days after dropping the children off at school.

Four years later, she struck up a romance with current partner, Paul.

The British branch of the Rothschild family, in a different approach to some of their European counterparts, are very happy to mix parties and politics - and the latest generation have multiple aristocratic marriages between them.

Sisters Kate and Alice Rothschild, granddaughters of Victor, 3rd Baron Rothschild, married brothers Ben and Zac Goldsmith, respectively, in high profile weddings. Kate and Ben are now divorced. Their brother, James Rothschild married hotel heiress Nicky Hilton, sister of socialite Paris, in 2015.

Meanwhile Nathaniel Rothschild, son and heir of Jacob, 4th Baron Rothschild, was married to socialite Annabelle Neilson, who died in 2018 at the age of 49. He is now married to former Page 3 girl Loretta Basey.

Nathaniel, known as Nat, also has highly publicised friendships with people such as Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska whose £80million yacht was the scene of an infamous gathering in Corfu with George Osborne and Peter Mandelson which led to Nat's dramatic and widely reported fall-out with Mr Osborne, an old school friend.

In Europe, the Rothschild family has known tumultuous times. Amschel Rothschild, son of the 3rd Baron Rothschild who married Anita Guinness, took his own life aged 41 at the Le Bristol hotel in Paris in 1996. The French and Swiss branches of the family were also locked in a public feud over the use of the Rothschild name. It was resolved in 2018.

In January, Benjamin's death was announced in a statement from the bank that bears his name.
