Freedom Caucus Endorses Cheney, McCarthy-Backed Candidate in PA

The House Freedom Caucus has endorsed a failed GOP establishment candidate backed by Liz Cheney and Kevin McCarthy for Congress in Pennsylvania's 8th District, throwing their support behind former Mitt Romney staffer Jim Bognet, who lost the race for the same seat in 2020.

Bognet, a former Mitt Romney and John McCain staffer who has had his congressional ambitions backed by Liz Cheney and Kevin McCarthy, lost the 2020 race for the 8th District seat to Democrat Rep. Matt Cartwright. Back then, Bognet was the clear establishment candidate in a wide GOP primary field and used a pro-establishment PAC run by his family and friends to launch attacks on his opponents. The attacks created a major divide between Bognet and the grassroots voters who back President Trump, a group he already struggled to connect with thanks to his reputation as a DC insider.

As voters in the 8th District have learned, before his run for Congress, Bognet spent virtually his entire adult life inside the GOP and uni-party establishment, even helping to launch the political career of anti-Trump Californian Arnold Schwarzenegger, a prominent supporter of COVID-19 mask and vaccine mandates. More recently, Bognet worked at a Democrat-founded lobbying firm, The glover park group, and despite his claims of being a Trump supporter, Bognet didn't even vote in the 2016 Presidential Election as the Trump movement triumphed over Hillary Clinton and the political establishment.

Though the Freedom Caucus claims to be anti-establishment, they endorsed Jim Bognet through their House Freedom Fund, saying in a fundraising email that he "will help strengthen the House Freedom Caucus and fight for America's future," making no mention of his deep establishment ties as he tries to re-invent himself. The Freedom Caucus email even attacks Bognet's truly grassroots primary race opponent, former Hazleton Mayor Mike Marsicano, an ardent supporter of President Trump who used to be a working-class Democrat and is running in the primary as an America First alternative to the McCarthy/Cheney-backed Bognet.

"Jim Bognet is running against a former Democrat in the Republican Primary," the Freedom Caucus email reads, painting Marsicano as if he's the one with a record he's trying to hide, like Bognet himself is. Jim Bognet "needs your urgent support," the email continued, stressing that the GOP's chances of victory have gone up thanks to a redrawn map that appears to lean right.

The email doesn't once mention Kevin McCarthy or Liz Cheney's support of Jim Bognet, despite him frequently boasting of his McCarthy backing on his campaign social media accounts. Ironically, while 8th District locals have come to refer to Bognet as "Beltway" Jim Bognet, the Freedom Caucus email includes a quote from Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, who has come under increasing scrutiny for his quiet establishment ties, claiming that "The House Freedom Fund helps grassroots candidates get the financial support they need to compete with establishment candidates."

Pennsylvania's James Bognet Worked For Mitt Romney, John McCain, Democrat Lobbying Firm

What do Mitt Romney, George H.W. Bush, John McCain, and Arnold Schwarzenegger have in common?

As the race for the 8th Congressional District in Pennsylvania heats up, there is much speculation that Republican James Bognet may step into the ring once again. While Bognet touts himself as a pro-Trump, America First candidate, he has a history of associating with staunch anti-Trumpers like Mitt Romney, John McCain, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and George H.W. Bush.

With only one Republican, Teddy Daniels, currently running for a chance for the U.S. House, rumors that Republican James Bognet may announce his candidacy once more are circulating. In the 2020 Congressional Race, Bognet secured an endorsement from President Donald Trump. Though the 45th President endorsed the 7th District's Lisa Scheller during the 7th Congressional Primary, he Bognet's endorsement came during the general election.

The President appeared to have reservations about endorsing Bognet in 2020, and that may be in-part due to his history of associating with popular anti-Trump figures before running for Congress in Pennsylvania. (READ MORE: Cindy McCain On Epstein: 'We All Knew What He Was Doing')

Bognet, a former staffer for now anti-Trump Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT), had previously served as the Vice President of a Democrat founded lobbying firm - the glover park group in 2016. As National File reported in May, 2020, Bognet is an establishment insider who served a leading role on Romney's failed 2012 presidential bid - and did not vote in the 2016 Presidential Election.

Back in 2003, Bognet helped launch anti-Trump Arnold Schwarzenegger's political career. He served as his campaign policy director in 2006, and continued working chief positions in the administration during his term. After that, Bognet worked as an economics advisor to Mitt Romney's presidential campaign. When Romney ultimately dropped out of the race, Bognet started working for anti-Trump John McCain's Presidential campaign as a communications adviser.

The glover park group, one of Washington's fastest-growing firms specializing in strategic communications and government relations, announced Tuesday that it has been bought by London-based WPP, the world's largest communications-services company.

glover park was started in 2001 by four political refugees - well-connected Democrats suddenly disconnected after the disputed election of President George W. Bush. The firm, now with a bipartisan leadership team, has grown to 140, with offices in Washington, New York, Los Angeles and Boulder, Colo.

GPG has $60 million in annual revenue, putting it among the nation's largest independent communications companies. The firm will keep its identity and operate as a stand-alone company within WPP. Specific terms were not disclosed.

GPG said that, as is typical for deals of this kind, "the founding partners have contractually agreed to remain with the firm for the foreseeable future."

The four founding partners are Carter Eskew, Joe Lockhart, Mike Feldman and Chip Smith. Lockhart was hired in June as Facebook's vice president of corporate communications.

GPG is stocked with professionals from the advertising, marketing and digital spheres as well as veterans from politics and government, including the Leadership in the House and Senate as well as the Obama, Bush and Clinton Administrations."

In the wake of the disappearance and likely murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, some of the most fervent and righteous voices demanding that others sever their ties with the Saudi regime have, understandably, come from his colleagues at that paper. "Why do you work for a murderer?," asked the Post's long-time Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt, addressing unnamed hypothetical Washington luminaries who continue to take money to do work for the despots in Riyadh, particularly Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, or "MbS" as he has been affectionately known in the western press.

Hiatt urged these hypothetical figures to engage in serious self-reflection: "Can I possibly work for such a regime, and still look at myself in the mirror each morning?" That, said Hiatt, "is the question that we, as a nation, must ask ourselves now."

But to find those for whom this question is directly relevant, Hiatt need not invoke his imagination or resort to hypotheticals. He can instead look to a place far more concrete and proximate: his own staff. Because it is there - on the roster of the Washington Post's own columnists and Contributing Writers - that one can find, still, those who maintain among the closest links to the Saudi regime and have the longest and most shameful history of propagandizing on their behalf.

Carter Eskew is a former top-level adviser to Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign and a Founder and Managing Director of glover park group which, according to the Post's own reporting, is one of the Saudi regime's largest lobbyists. glover park, says the Post, has "remained silent amid growing public outrage over reports that Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi Consulate." Indeed, as the New York Times reported this week, Eskew's firm, "which was started by former Clinton administration officials," is the second-most active lobbying firm for the Saudi regime, "being paid $150,000 a month."

In addition to his work as a Managing Director in one of the Saudi regime's most devoted lobbying firms, Eskew is also a Contributing Opinion Writer at the Washington Post. His last column was published just three days ago, on October 12 - ten days after Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Turkey, and the same day that Eskew's editor, Hiatt, published his righteous column demanding to know how anyone with a conscience could maintain ties to the Saudi regime (raising a separate but equally important ethical quandary, Eskew's last Post column was an attack on "Medicare for All," even though glover park clients include corporations with direct financial interests in that debate, none of which was disclosed by the Post).

Is This the Beginning of the End of the U.S.-Saudi Alliance?

The disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi last Tuesday is threatening to upend the terms of the decades-long alliance between the United States and Saudi Arabia. In the nine days since Khashoggi, a Saudi Arabian resident of Virginia and a Washington Post columnist, was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, politicians, media figures and foreign policy elites - even those who have fawned over the authoritarian Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman - have grown increasingly critical of the U.S.-Saudi alliance.

The U.S. has long given the Saudis a blank check, politically and militarily, and there have been voices advocating for a rethinking of that decades-old relationship for nearly as long as it has lasted. But the widespread belief that the Saudis assassinated Khashoggi inside their consulate has brought those voices squarely into the center. Suddenly, the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States is being called into fundamental question.

President Donald Trump initially responded to questions about Khashoggi's disappearance by saying "I don't like hearing about it, and hopefully that will sort itself out." But on Thursday, he began to sound much less confident in his defense of Saudi Arabia, the first foreign country he visited as president. He said that it was beginning to look as though Khashoggi, a critic of the crown prince, was indeed murdered, but worried that jobs would be at risk if arms sales to the country were halted.

In the Senate, the kingdom is starting to lose its traditional bipartisan support, with almost every member of the Foreign Relations Committee calling on Trump to investigate Khashoggi's disappearance. The Washington Post, meanwhile, has devoted extraordinary resources, both on the reporting and editorial side, to the case of its columnist.

Washington-based lobbying firms that do business with Saudi Arabia - particularly Hogan and Lovells, the glover park group, and Brownstein - are facing a difficult decision, as pressure mounts across the board to break with the kingdom. The New York Times has withdrawn its sponsorship of an upcoming technology conference in Riyadh. Meanwhile, the Economist editor in chief Zanny Minton Beddoes and CNBC Squawbox co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin have announced they will pull out. A CNN spokesperson told Buzzfeed News they are reconsidering their sponsorship, and a spokespeople for CNBC and Fox Business told The Intercept they are "monitoring the situation."

Prominent right-wing columnist and Council of Foreign Relations fellow Max Boot, a long-time defender of the U.S.-Saudi alliance, warned that if the Saudis did indeed kill Khashoggi, there "must be hell to pay."

Soros Spent More on Lobbying in 2017 Than Any Previous Year - by Steve Straub

In President Trump's first year in office George Soros has spent more on lobbying than during any previous year:

The Open Society Policy Center, a D.C.-based 501 (c)(4) nonprofit that focuses on domestic and international advocacy efforts and is a separate entity from Soros's Open Society Foundations, poured $16.2 million into lobbying throughout the entirety of 2017.

Soros's group reported spending $4.6 million during the first half of 2017 on its lobbying efforts. During the third quarter, Soros added $1.25 million to the total. Most of the lobbying expenditures-$10.3 million-were spent during the fourth quarter, which spans from October 1 to December 31.

Soros ramped up his efforts as the year progressed by pushing funds toward issues that have been seen as a direct attack on the deep-pocketed financier, such as Hungary's Bill on Foreign Funded Organizations (LexNGO), a crackdown on foreign-funded organizations in that country.

Hungary's parliament approved the law that targets foreign-funded NGOs in June of last year, saying they could "threaten the country's political and economic interests and interfere with the functioning of its institutions."

While the legislation does not mention Soros, who was born in Hungary and has given money to a number of NGOs in the country, by name, Hungarian politicians have said that they wanted to "sweep out" organizations tied to the financier, Bloomberg reported.

Soros also pushed funds to lobby on the Restricted First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017, the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2018, and the Preventing Preemptive War in North Korea Act of 2017, among others, according to the disclosure forms. The Open Society Policy Center lobbied the Senate, House of Representatives, State Department, National Security Council, and the Department of Defense last year.

"We make different grants each year depending on what is happening in Congress and there was a lot going in 2017: Protecting immigrants and refugees, preserving fairness in the tax code, advocating for criminal justice reform, pressing for disaster relief for Puerto Rico, and promoting a progressive U.S. foreign policy," said Jonathan Kaplan, a spokesman for the Open Society Policy Center.

Between 2002 and 2012, the policy center reported spending a total of $19,120,000 lobbying Congress and agencies, an average of $1.9 million on lobbying per year. The most Soros had spent on lobbying prior to last year was $12.4 million in 2014.

The group's disclosure forms also show that Soros has recruited the help of a number of outside lobbying shops in the past including Orion Strategies, the Mitchell Firm, and glover park group, all D.C.-based firms, on top of its three in-house lobbyists.
