Disturbing rise in childlike sex dolls imported from Asia

More than 150 childlike sex dolls sent from Japan, Hong Kong and China were stopped from entering Australia last year as federal authorities crack down on child abuse materials.

Australian Border Force officials detected 118 consignments containing 156 child-sex dolls, with the "vast majority" coming from major Asian trading partners. While there were fewer dolls detected last year compared to 2020, the number of consignments intercepted rose 61 per cent.

Assistant Customs Minister Jason Wood said the dolls were intended to sexualise children.

"The Australian government is resolutely focused on combating the attempted import of these vile products, which have no place in Australian society," Mr Wood said. "Child-like sex dolls are symptomatic of the broader global threat posed by child sexual abuse, contact offending and the sexual exploitation of children, all forms of a growing global crime market."

Last February, a Perth man was sentenced to 11 months' jail after being convicted of importing a childlike sex doll.

There have been four criminal prosecutions pursued by ABF on the issue since last May, with a 23-year-old NSW man charged in October.

Last year, Scott Morrison unveiled a 10-year national strategy for the prevention of child sexual abuse, which includes extra law enforcement measures and support for victims.

"Child sexual abuse is happening now. It's happening online, in appalling numbers," Mr Morrison said last year.

"The shocking truth is online child sexual abuse was already ?increasing, and it has spiked in ?response to the Covid-19 restrictions.

"It makes our response all the more urgent and our resolve all the more unshakeable.

"Our enforcement, intelligence and research agencies are tasked with tracking down child sexual abuse wherever it happens."

Man charged over alleged importation of childlike sex dolls

A man in Sydney's southwest has been charged after allegedly importing a childlike sex doll, as authorities note a 653 per cent increase in the number of these products seized in the past two years.

Australian Border Force officers intercepted a package on July 28 that was allegedly marked as containing a clothing mannequin, but upon further examination was actually found to contain a childlike sex doll.

The detection was referred to ABF investigators, who executed a search warrant at a home in Heckenberg, in Sydney's south-west earlier this week, where they arrested a 23-year-old man.

Authorities seized a number of mobile electronic devices that will undergo further digital forensic examination. The man was arrested and charged with the alleged importation of a tier-two good, namely a child-like sex doll.

He was granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear in Liverpool Local Court on September 29.

The man's arrest comes at the end of National Child Protection Week, as authorities note a 653 per cent increase in detections of childlike sex dolls in the two previous financial years.

In the financial year 2020-2021, the ABF seized 226 childlike sex dolls or parts of dolls. In comparison, the ABF seized 138 childlike sex dolls and parts in 2019-2020 and only 30 in the previous year.

ABF Superintendent Investigations and Sponsor Monitoring Unit QLD and NT Amanda Coppleman said the increase could be linked to the force, along with its partner agencies, increasing its detection rates and disrupting the supply chain more effectively.

ABF Commander Enforcement East Justin Bathurst added that the importation or possession of the dolls is prohibited in Australia.

"These dolls sexualise children. They are not harmless and do not prevent people from offending in the future," Commander Bathurst said.

The majority of consignments sent to Australia originate from mainland China, Japan and Hong Kong.

ABF NSW Investigation Acting Inspector Shaun Baker, whose team will investigate importations, said one of the most disturbing aspects was how life-like the dolls can be.

"These dolls often include instructions on how to use them, they sometimes come with children's clothing or blankets with cartoons characters on them," he said. "In my experience, they look like real children.

"It's not uncommon to see that real-life likeness, the eyes, the lips, all those facial features, right down to, on some occasions, rib cages. The likeness is next to nothing: it is real."

He added that often when a search warrant is executed, officers will locate other child sex abuse material in addition to the dolls.

Australian Federal Police commander and commander of the AFP-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation and Child Protection Operations Hilda Sirec said there had been a significant increase in reports for online child sexual exploitation.

Last year, the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation received more than 22,000 reports of online child sexual exploitation, compared to 14,000 reports the previous year. Each report contains images and videos of children being sexually assaulted or exploited for the sexual gratification of online child sex offenders.

Federal Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said that in 2019 the government tightened laws, making the possession of a childlike sex doll punishable by up to 15 years behind bars.

"The Morrison government is serious about cracking down on this abhorrent crime," she said. "This National Child Protection Week, I'm calling on all Australians to help us in this fight. Take the threat seriously, learn the warning signs, start a discussion, and help protect children."

E-commerce site Etsy is best known for selling handmade and vintage items like jewellery, bespoke wedding cake toppers and baby blankets. But the global shopping site has a growing dark underbelly selling child sex dolls and graphic slogan apparel.

One item available for sale titled "Boy sex doll" includes multiple explicit images of a silicon doll with a height of just 140cm, the average height for boys aged 10 -12 years old, and includes a diagram of how to move and position the doll.

Another listing gives purchasers the option to buy the child doll's head as a stand-alone purchase.

One female doll is listed as having the height and weight of that commonly of girls aged 12 to 13 and is photographed wearing teenage-style clothing. The listing promises buyers "discreet shipping", saying, "We ship in plain brown boxes with nothing on them but a shipping label."

Many listings allow purchasers to select the skin, hair and eye colours of the dolls, as well as the height, weight and genital sizing.

Under Australian law, child sex dolls are considered child sex material. Importation carries a fine of up to $555,000 and up to ten years' imprisonment.

In December last year, News Corp reported Australian Border Force had seized 191 dolls that had been sent to Australian consumers, up from 145 in 2019.

Also rife among the 'global marketplace', as Etsy refers to itself, are a growing number of highly graphic items like underwear and t-shirts with slogans such as 'Daddy's little c*t', 'Al Plz', and 'Daddy's Little Ck W***e'.

Under Etsy's current algorithm, the explicit items appear alongside items like writing journals and children's clothing.

While the items do not violate Etsy's community guidelines, Melbourne-based Etsy seller Anna Cordell, a long-time user who started selling face masks on the platform during Melbourne's lockdown, said the products are inappropriate.

"As well as the fact these products are placed alongside Father's Day gifts and baby clothes, they eroticise child abuse. It does not belong on Etsy," Cordell said.

"Surely a 'Daddy please' tattoo emblazoned across bare genitals is in breach of these guidelines."

Since discovering the disturbing products, Cordell has partnered with Collective Shout to launch an online petition asking Etsy to remove the items and ensure they do not return.

"I'm certainly especially shocked at the placement of the products, but it's all part of the larger issue that this stuff simply does not belong on Etsy," Cordell says.

Collective Shout campaign director Melinda Tankard Reist agrees, and said the t-shirts, underwear and temporary tattoos, while not illegal, are part of a larger societal problem.

"These products fetishise girls and suggest they really want to be sexually abused by their fathers," she said

"Etsy is perpetuating this falsehood and playing into this paedophile fantasy.

The company is promoting the idea that abuse is sexy."

Etsy told News Corp a number of profiles selling the dolls have since been deactivated.

"We take the safety of our marketplace very seriously, and we regularly revisit and adjust our policies. We will continue to closely monitor this space," a spokesperson said.

In 2015, Etsy banned the sale of spells, hexes and potions from its platform.

It did not respond to News Corp's questions about whether it would introduce a similar ban on child sex dolls.

Ms Roper cited research from the Australian Institute of Criminology, which concluded there was no evidence these products prevented child sexual abuse.

"Instead, they present a risk of escalation and may actually increase the likelihood of child sexual abuse," she said.

The providers of the childlike sex dolls have proved they will go to extraordinary lengths to supply customised material to abusers, Ms Roper told NCA NewsWire.

"Men could see a girl out in public, take a photo and say, 'I want a doll modelled on her'," she said.

"They could send in photos of children they know or have some kind of caretaking power over, so there's lots of ways men can use this to victimise living children.

"It's a new way they can be victimised and abused even without their knowledge and without their presence."

The brazen criminality comes as new data provided to NCA NewsWire reveals a spike in the number of childlike sex dolls being imported into Australia.

Australian Border Force (ABF) seized more than 100 dolls in less than five months to November 18.

So far this calendar year, 191 dolls or parts of dolls were found, compared to 145 in the whole of 2019, with the majority found in packages sent from mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.

Assistant Customs Minister Jason Wood said the ABF and law enforcement more broadly were "focused on combating the attempted import of these vile products into Australia".

"Increased intelligence work undertaken across the Home Affairs portfolio and the ABF's commitment to detecting this abhorrent material has ensured these items are stopped at the border," he said.

Legislation introduced in June allows for a mandatory minimum sentence of four years' imprisonment in situations where it is the person's "second-strike" child sexual abuse offence.

"These penalties reflect the serious role that these products can play in normalising and desensitising offenders to child sexual abuse," Mr Wood said.

"These products sexualise children and cause great harm. The ABF is committed to working closely with our law enforcement partners, both here in Australia and overseas, to combat this issue, and we will continue to pursue and prosecute."

Other sites have appeared more proactive in eliminating the abuse material as the presence of childlike sex dolls becomes more common.

Earlier in the year, the ABF worked alongside major Chinese e-commerce marketplace Alibaba to shut down an offshore vendor importing dolls into Australia.

The border force's superintendent in Queensland, Amanda Coppleman, said the increase of the crime was a huge concern and assistance from online retailers was crucial.

"Online e-commerce sites like Alibaba.com play a role in eliminating the supply of these childlike sex dolls and have the ability to shut down vendors," she said.

"The fight against child exploitation is an ongoing and evolving one but each successful achievement is an important milestone."

Etsy seller providing childlike sex dolls modelled off 14-year-old Instagram star

An online seller has given a disturbing justification for selling 'vile' sex dolls online, with Border Force revealing a spike in the products being sent to Australia.

Vile child sex dolls are being sold brazenly on a popular online retail site, as authorities reveal more than 100 have been seized from Australians in the past five months alone.

One seller openly gloated on online sales platform Etsy that the sex doll they were providing was modelled off a 14-year-old Instagram star.

The seller, with the username sexy Lady Fox, unwittingly revealed the horrific inspiration for the sex dolls when contacted by an Australian sexual assault advocacy group posing as an interested buyer.

The sex dolls are advertised as being 156cm tall - the average height of a 13-year-old girl - and are able to be customised to look like specific children if a photo is provided, according to disturbing texts sent to a member of advocacy group Collective Shout.

"We can change the wig," sexy Lady Fox said in reply when provided with two computer generated images of young children.

"I think it is very similar to the images you send me."

After NCA NewsWire notified Etsy of the seller, it swiftly deactivated the shop from the sales platform.

When contacted by NCA NewsWire, 'sexy Lady Fox' gave an extraordinary justification for providing the disturbing product, which is regarded as child sex material in Australian law and carries a penalty for importation of up to $555,000 and 10 years' imprisonment.

"We are selling the most required real dolls on the market," the seller said, who identified themselves simply as Federica.

When asked if it was the intention to make the dolls look underage, they said: "To be honest, if I think that somebody (will) buy and use a real doll instead doing something wrong with a young girl, I'm grateful."

This horrific justification was rejected by Collective Shout as "self-serving".

"Men who are found with child abuse dolls are also (often) found with other forms of child sex abuse material, including things like photos and videos of children and babies being raped and tortured," said Collective Shout campaign manager Caitlin Roper, who is also completing a PHD at RMIT University researching sex dolls and robots.

"There are reported scenarios from this year of men still incorporating living children into their child sex abuse doll use."

Child-like sex doll vendor shut down by Alibaba.com

The Australian Border Force (ABF) has worked alongside e-commerce marketplace Alibaba.com to shut down an offshore vendor selling childlike sex dolls into Australia.

As part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the sale and purchase of these products, the ABF collected information during a warrant executed in Brisbane on 12 August 2020, and was able to identify a vendor that was operating on Alibaba.com. The ABF worked closely with Alibaba.com to shut down the online storefront of the vendor, closing their major sales point.

The number of childlike sex dolls being imported into Australia poses a significant concern for the ABF. Since July 2020, the ABF has seized 36 childlike sex dolls at the border. To compound these serious concerns, operational activity regularly locates evidence linked to other offences of child exploitation.

ABF Superintendent Regional Investigations Queensland Amanda Coppleman said the activity was significant, as it was the first time the ABF worked with an e-commerce site to shut down a vendor selling childlike sex dolls.

"Online e-commerce sites like Alibaba.com play a role in eliminating the supply of these childlike sex dolls and have the ability to shut down vendors. The fight against child exploitation is an ongoing and evolving one - but each successful achievement is an important milestone".

"We are pleased with our ongoing cooperation with Alibaba.com, which demonstrates their commitment to the idea that their marketplace is not an acceptable platform for these products," Superintendent Coppleman said.

When Alibaba.com was notified of listings violating its platform policies, a spokesperson said the company acted to remove them and implemented a number of additional measures to prevent these items from being re-listed.

"We maintain a robust product listing policy that prohibits the listing of any items by third party sellers depicting or suggestive of sex involving minors. Third-party sellers in breach of the policy would be subject to our disciplinary measures," an Alibaba.com spokesperson said.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing with individuals facing a potential 10 year jail term under the Customs Act 1901 if convicted of importing a childlike sex doll. Individual states and territory laws, as well as other Federal legislation, have strong measures against possession and importation.

ABF arrests man after seizing parts of 11 childlike sex dolls

Australian Border Force (ABF) investigators have arrested a 43-year-old Padstow (NSW) man after parts of 11 childlike sex dolls were detected in air cargo shipments.

Investigations began after ABF officers detected and seized the parts in three separate consignments at air cargo facilities in Sydney on 19 September and 16 October 2020. Yesterday (Tuesday 20 October) ABF, with the assistance of NSW Police Force detectives from Bankstown Police Area Command, executed search warrants at an address in Padstow.

During the warrants officers located and seized an electronic device allegedly containing child abuse images, and a further childlike sex doll. A number of additional electronic devices were seized pending full forensic examination. Investigators also located a number of cannabis plants, a quantity of marijuana and publications containing child abuse material.

The man was arrested and charged with three counts of Import Tier 2 good, contrary to section 233BAB(5) of the Customs Act 1901.

Bankstown detectives also charged the man with cultivate prohibited plants and possess prohibited drug.

The man was refused bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court today (Wednesday 21 October 2020).

Importing childlike sex dolls is an offence under the Customs Act. The maximum penalty if convicted is up to 10 years' imprisonment and/or fines of up to $525,000. Under the Criminal Code the possession of a childlike sex doll attracts a maximum penalty of 15 years' imprisonment.

ABF Superintendent Regional Investigations NSW Garry Low said the ABF has a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse material and will use all available powers to protect the community from people associated with these abhorrent activities.

"Child sexual abuse is a global issue, and the ABF actively engages with its law enforcement partners both domestically and internationally, to further investigate and prevent harm to children in Australia and overseas," Superintendent Low said.

The ABF seize all childlike sex dolls detected at the border. Where ABF officers find additional evidence of child abuse material, it is referred to the appropriate federal and state authorities for investigation.

Bankstown Police Area Command Crime Manager, Detective Chief Inspector Darren Beech said the arrest was the result of great work between the two agencies.

"We do not condone any form of child exploitation and we will continue to work with other agencies in the detection and prosecution of persons attempting to purchase these items," Det C/Insp Beech said.

Paedophile crackdown will see sick perverts jailed for 20 YEARS for owning a child sex doll

Paedophiles will face up to 20 years jail for owning a child sex doll under tough new laws passed in Queensland.

The new laws, which came into effect on Tuesday, will target suppliers, producers and possessors of child sex dolls.

The move is part of a series of measures introduced following the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child sexual Abuse.

Queensland Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D'Ath said the new laws were designed to send 'a clear message that child sexual abuse(was) never OK'.

'These tough laws herald a new era of delivering justice to victims,' she said in a statement.

'They create a new offence of failing to report and failing to protect a child from institutional child sexual abuse.

'The new laws also clarify that priests will not be able to rely on the seal of confession to avoid the reporting of abuse.'

The new laws are the result of extensive public consultation that saw more than 50 submissions received from a number of organisations, stakeholders and individuals.

The Bill follows Australian Border Force officers seizing a number of lifelike child sex dolls in July, after the items were ordered online and sent via post or air cargo.

Thirty-one packages were intercepted in the first half of 2020, and 86 childlike sex dolls were seized in the 12 months to June 30, news.com.au reported.

'ABF officers at our air cargo and mail facilities are actively targeting these dolls, which are a prohibited import and are considered child abuse material,' an ABF spokesman said.

'The ABF has a zero tolerance approach to child abuse material, including childlike sex dolls, and we use all powers available to us to protect Australians from anyone associated with these sickening activities.

'Child-like sex dolls and other child abuse material are symptomatic of the broader global threat posed by child sexual abuse, that's why the ABF works with its law enforcement and intelligence partners to further investigate these imports.'

The ABF operation resulted in three men in New South Wales facing the prospect of 15 years in jail after they allegedly bought child-like sex dolls.

The men were arrested in Grafton, northern NSW, and the northern Sydney suburb of Turramurra over two days in May.

They were arrested after the ABF allegedly intercepted sex dolls being imported into the country in March and April.

Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Lesa Gale said at the time the 'child-like sex dolls' could desensitise people who used them to 'the physical, emotional and psychological harm caused by sexual abuse.'

'These dolls sexualise children, they are not harmless and do not prevent people from offending in the future,' she said.

'Research by the Australian Institute of Criminology suggests that use of the dolls may lead to an escalation in child sex offences - from viewing online child abuse material to contact sexual offending.'

Border Force has intercepted a worrying number of disgusting and illegal products favoured by paedophiles in parcels sent to Australia.

Australian Border Force officers have seized a large number of lifelike child sex dolls favoured by paedophiles, ordered online and sent via the post or through air cargo.

Data obtained by news.com.au shows the purchase of the sinister products by Australians continues, with 31 packages intercepted at in the first six months of 2020 alone, the majority in air cargo.

In the 12 months to June 30, a total of 86 childlike sex dolls were seized by ABF, it can be revealed.

"Child-like sex dolls and other child abuse material are symptomatic of the broader global threat posed by child sexual abuse, that's why the ABF works with its law enforcement and intelligence partners to further investigate these imports," a spokesman for the agency said.

"ABF officers at our air cargo and mail facilities are actively targeting these dolls, which are a prohibited import and are considered child abuse material.

"The ABF has a zero tolerance approach to child abuse material, including childlike sex dolls, and we use all powers available to us to protect Australians from anyone associated with these sickening activities."

Earlier this month, news.com.au revealed that one of the world's largest online marketplaces, Alibaba, contained a number of listings for replica child dolls, including infants and toddlers.

One of the sellers even provided a sickening video of an anatomically correct baby doll, demonstrating how it could be "used".

Advocacy group Collective Shout conducted an investigation that exposed a number of listings, despite previous commitments from the company to ban the sale of the dolls.

"I've been an activist with Collective Shout for 10 years and this is the most disturbing content I've seen," campaigner Melinda Liszewski said. "It is deeply distressing to view."

The investigation found large numbers of replica child dolls marketed as "young girl", "flat chest" and "sex dolls for men" sold on Alibaba by 18 different suppliers.

Some of the models were as small as 65cm, which is roughly the height of a six-month-old baby. The dolls discovered for sale ranged in price from $250 to $500.

Another listing was discovered for a vagina sex toy that "bleeds" during use - designed to simulate a broken hymen.

The items are far from harmless, the ABF spokesman told news.com.au.

"Recent research by the Australian Institute of Criminology found that the use of these dolls may lead to an escalation in child sex offences - from viewing online child abuse material to contact sexual offending.

"It is also found that there is no evidence that these dolls have a therapeutic benefit in preventing child sexual abuse."

In September 2019, new legislation came into effect that made it an offence to possess a childlike sex doll, punishable with up to 15 years' imprisonment.

"The reforms also amended the definition of 'child abuse material' in the Criminal Code to put beyond doubt that it is an offence to, for example, use a carriage service such as the internet to advertise or solicit, or use a postal service to send, a childlike sex doll," the ABF spokesman said.

"An individual caught in possession of child abuse material, including a childlike sex doll, can be charged with importing Tier 2 goods. The maximum penalty (for attempted importation), if convicted, is up to 10 years' imprisonment and/or fines of up to $525,000."

When the listings on Alibaba were revealed, the company took action to remove them and implement a number of "additional measures to prevent the items being relisted", a spokesperson said.

"We maintain a robust product listing policy that prohibits the listing by third-party sellers of any items depicting or suggestive of sex involving minors, and third-party sellers in breach of the policy are subject to our disciplinary measures."

ABF encourages anyone with information about individuals importing illicit material, including childlike sex dolls and child abuse material, to report it to Border Watch at australia.gov.au/borderwatch

CREEPY lifelike child sex dolls including ones the size of babies have been found for sale on one of the world's largest online retailers.

Investigators found a large number of the horrific items on the marketplace Alibaba, despite the Chinese company previously committing to removing child sex dolls from sale.

Australian campaign group Collective Shout, who fight against the sexualisation of girls, found the dolls which they branded some of the most "disturbing content" they have ever seen.

dolls included replicas of children marketed as "sex dolls of men" with the listing boasting they are anatomically correct with replica genitalia.

Other listings included details from the sellers about how they can be "used" - including video guides.

Some of the dolls were as small as 2ft tall, which is about the height of a six-month-old baby, reports news.com.au.

And one listing included an 2ft 6in tall doll described as a "baby" that was "cute" and "soft".

Another featured a female doll described as "small breast, young girl" that was so tiny it could be disassembled and kept in a suitcase.

The vile items were being sold for around £400 each by at least 18 different suppliers on Alibaba.

Collective Shout campaigner Melinda Liszewski said: "I've been an activist with Collective Shout for 10 years and this is the most disturbing content I've seen.

"It is deeply distressing to view."

She added: "At a time when there is more awareness of child sexual abuse than ever, how is it that a multi-billion dollar mainstream corporation like Alibaba can profit from normalising the rape of babies?"

Owning a child sex abuse doll is illegal under Australian law - but the sellers were offering to ship to the country.

Ms Liszewski added some of the sellers of the child sex dolls the group uncovered were "verified" by the company.

Collective Shout is calling on credit card and money transfer companies to cease doing business with Alibaba until it takes action on selling child dolls.

This is not the first time the dolls have been uncovered in the site as well, with previous investigations in 2018 and January this year finding a trove of the items.

Alibaba has insisted it is proactive in policing its listings and that it will always take action to remove them when notified.

Collective Shout campaigner manager Caitlin Roper, who is researching female sex dolls and sex robots, said the dolls are far from harmless.

She said: "Child sex abuse dolls are designed to facilitate users' fantasies of raping a child.

"This is not a victimless crime - these lifelike dolls normalise and legitimise the sexual use and abuse of children."

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) issued tougher guidance in 2019 to help bring charges against anyone selling or importing child sex dolls in Britain.

UK Border Force agents have seized at least 230 child sex dolls since 2016 - with this then being referred to the police.

However, it is not actually illegal to posses a childlike sex doll in England and Wales.

But sickos could be prosecuted if they are caught "importing" one - such as by buying it from abroad online.

Anyone caught trying to bring the dolls in could be jailed for up to seven years based on the latest guidance from the CPS.

Children's charity the NSPCC also warned that adults who use the dolls could be "desensitised" and go on to harm kids.

And the Australian Institute of Criminology found in a study that lifelike child sex dolls may lead to an increase in the abuse of real children.

In a statement, Alibaba said: "We maintain a robust product listing policy that prohibits the listing by third-party sellers of any items depicting or suggestive of sex involving minors, and third-party sellers in breach of the policy are subject to our disciplinary measures.

"After notification of a number of such listings, we have taken action to remove them."
