But those who survived McKenna's molestation never want to see him free again. "He's a rapist, he's a paedophile, and there's no way he should be let out," survivor Michael Hilder told Radio 6PR.

Griffith went on to rape another little girl from the same centre in his final week there after being told his position was being made redundant, court records indicate. Subsequently, he abused three more girls at other centres before his arrest in an unrelated police investigation in August 2022. The Uniting Church has said it is "deeply saddened and sorry that harm was done at one of our facilities".

The footy club has demanded a jury verdict finding it was negligent for abuse committed by star fundraising volunteer Graeme 'Chops' Hobbs be thrown out, or the multimillion-dollar compensation payout to the predator's victim be slashed.

The pedophile, now dead, was jailed after admitting to abusing Mr Kneale for six years from the age of 11.

During his civil trial in October 2023, Mr Kneale gave evidence he was sexually assaulted at the Bulldogs' home-ground more than 40 times.

The appeal fight is set to be closely watched by a second alleged victim who has launched fresh legal action against the club, also for abuse at the hands of Hobbs at Whitten Oval in the 1980s.

In the Court of Appeal on Friday, the Bulldogs' high profile barrister Bret Walker SC labelled the award - the highest amount handed to an abuse survivor in Australia - as "genuinely startling".

Barrister Sam Hay KC, for Mr Kneale, conceded "the award is high" but that it could be "indicative of the way the general public views the nature of this abuse".

Told that judges in other states awarded less than $1m for the same damages, Mr Hay said: "There may be a disconnect at the moment with how judges are assessing these damages and how juries are."

Meanwhile, Mr Walker dismissed evidence at the trial of "red flags" over Hobbs' behaviour around Whitten Oval.

He said evidence that Hobbs was viewed as a "sleazy character" and a "quintessentially dirty old man" who involved himself in sexual talk with young footballers didn't go far enough to put the club on notice that he was a pedophile.

"We're not sued for failing to ensure polite conversation in a changing room," Mr Walker said.

Mr Hay replied: "If that happened today, there would be no question that perpetrator would be removed from the club."

"Why wouldn't that be enough for the jury?" he asked, pointing to evidence that a club official was told of concerns about Hobbs "on more than one occasion".

Star football player Stephen MacPherson told the jury he spoke to finance officer Stephen Smith about the "sleazy … quintessentially dirty old man" in 1981, who he'd seen take photos of naked young footballers during a club trip.

Justice Beach questioned whether these concerns by the "sterling young man" and "champion" of the club should have been investigated.

Mr Walker replied that Mr MacPherson's evidence "doesn't go that far" in suggesting an adult would sexually abuse someone at the premises.

The Bulldogs' barrister said it was "not sinister" that Hobbs was at Whitten Oval "quite regularly", that he wore a trench coat or was seen with young boys.

He said Hobbs' "large coat" didn't "provide a shred of support" that he was committing sexual depravity against children.

"It's difficult to understand how that mattered," he said of the coat being raised in evidence.

Mr Walker claimed the jury was "misled by hypotheticals" put to three former officers of the club, including ex-president Peter Gordon, who all agreed they would have acted if they were told of concerns about Hobbs.

Ultimately, Mr Walker questioned why the club was "liable for the criminal conduct of another person".

But Mr Hay said the then-Footscray FC ran events that attracted children and would in turn attract pedophiles, that Hobbs was "perennially around the club", that Mr Kneale was seen being "in inappropriate company" with the older man who abused him at Whitten Oval dozens of times.

Court of Appeal judges Justice Karin Emerton, Justice John Forrest and Justice Beach have reserved their decision, and will hand down their findings on the appeal at a later date.

"The Bulldogs' decision to deny any legal responsibility for these men who were abused at their ground, means we have renewed our search for other victims of Hobbs, and people who may know something about Hobbs' offending at the Western Bulldogs to gather more information for any future trial.''

Mr Magazanik said that in his experience of litigating sexual abuse claims, appeals against jury verdicts were very rare.

Acting for the Bulldogs in Friday's appeal is high-profile silk Bret Walker, who successfully represented Cardinal George Pell at his appeal in the High Court in 2019.

A club spokesperson said: "The Western Bulldogs can confirm that a statement of claim has been issued against the club relating to allegations from the 1980's.

"The club intends to defend the matter, noting that it treats any allegation of this nature with the utmost seriousness and care for all involved. With the matter concerning Mr Adam Kneale scheduled to be heard in the Court of Appeal this week, the club will not be making any further comment on either matter at this time."

A victim of historical sexual abuse at the former Bayswater Boys' Home has reached a $500,000 settlement with the Salvation Army, after receiving just $50,000 under the National Redress Scheme.

The case raises significant concerns about the capacity of the redress scheme to adequately compensate victims of historical abuse. Under the scheme, payments are capped at $150,000 and require recipients to waive their legal rights to sue the organisation involved.

Geoff, who asked for his surname not to be used because he is a victim of sexual assault, was initially sent to the former Baltara Reception Centre in Parkside, in Melbourne's north-east, which provided accommodation for boys involved in minor offending or who were wards of the state.

He was transferred to the Bayswater Boys' Home in about 1971, where he was abused by three staff members over almost four years.

Two of the men accused in court documents of the sexual assaults were later jailed after being convicted of assaulting other vulnerable children in their care.

Geoff received a $50,000 payment in 2019 from the National Redress Scheme, which identified the state government and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services as being culpable for the abuse.

"As Baltara Reception Centre no longer exists, the state of Victoria is their representative. I found the Department of Health and Human Services equally responsible," says NRS correspondence from August 2019.

The decision by the NRS to ignore the abuse that occurred at Bayswater Boys' Home allowed Geoff to launch a separate civil court action against the Salvation Army in 2022, which was recently settled before trial with a payment of $500,000.

The disparity in payments casts doubt over the ability of the redress scheme to provide fair compensation.

The scheme was created after the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and has made average payments of $89,000 to more than 15,000 victims of abuse. The payments are funded by the institutions signed up to the scheme.

However, several victims who have opted to pursue civil action against religious orders and other institutions have recently received multimillion-dollar settlements, or been awarded massive damages payments at trial.

In November, a Supreme Court jury awarded $3.3 million to the victim of paedophile priest Vincent Kiss, after lawyers for the Catholic Church argued the victim should have only received $250,000 in damages for pain and suffering.

The Western Bulldogs were ordered to pay $5.9 million in compensation to a child sex abuse victim last year, when a Supreme Court jury ruled the football club was negligent and failed to stop a former volunteer from preying on boys between 1984 and 1990.

Victim of historical sexual abuse sues Western Bulldogs for damages

The Western Bulldogs have been accused of turning a blind eye to a sexual predator, who preyed on young boys at the football club four decades ago.

Adam Kneale, now 51, is suing the club for damages after enduring abuse at the hands of Graeme Hobbs, a former club volunteer who lured young victims with the promise of money, tickets and memorabilia.

Mr Kneale's lawyers said the club, then known as Footscray, acted negligently by failing to take action to stop Hobbs and is liable for the lifelong damage Mr Kneale suffered.

Barrister Tim Hammond said Hobbs, whose nickname was Chops, was a "sick and disturbed sexual predator" who raped Mr Kneale countless times over seven years.

Mr Hammond said the abuse led Mr Kneale to develop substance addictions, and that he continued to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety that had affected his ability to work.

Mr Hammond told the Supreme Court Hobbs was an "integral part" of the footy club, whose volunteering and fundraising work was publicly recognised by club leaders.

"Hobbs was able to take advantage of his special role at the club to take advantage of boys like Adam Kneale and then abuse them," Mr Hammond said.

"Hobbs made money in his role for the Footscray Football Club but it was Adam Kneale who has paid the price for that.

"This was a football club being run by men who should have known."

Mr Hammond said Hobbs first abused Mr Kneale when he was 11-years-old in 1984, and committed further offences at the Whitten Oval club offices, change rooms, toilets, the boardroom and on a trip to Sydney.

"Hobbs was a strange oddball, an older bloke who lived with his dad and hung around with kids on the premises and gravitated to the Under 19's," Mr Hammond said.

"We say people in charge should have asked, 'What's he doing here and why is he having such an important role at the club?'"

Mr Hammond said, Hobbs also exposed Mr Kneale to other paedophiles, who committed further rapes against him when he was a teenager.

Mr Kneale reported Hobbs to police in 1993.

The case made the front page of the local paper, The Western Times, when the rapist was jailed by the County Court.

Hobbs is now dead.

Childhood sexual abuse survivor Adam Kneale has commenced legal action against the Western Bulldogs, lodging a Supreme Court writ seeking damages from the AFL club.

On May 1, an ABC Sport investigation revealed Kneale's harrowing story of abuse at the hands of former Bulldogs fundraising manager and Under-19 room steward Graeme Hobbs, who subjected Kneale to horrific ordeals within the club's offices and social club facilities at the Western Oval.

The abuse, which took place between 1984 and 1990 when the Bulldogs were known as Footscray Football Club, escalated to Hobbs exposing Kneale to a paedophile ring.

And the man described in court as the "ringleader" of those offenders, John Raymond Wayland, confirmed to ABC Sport that he'd briefly been a trainer at the Bulldogs and met Hobbs at the club.

Kneale's lawyers, Rightside Legal, have lodged a writ seeking damages from the Western Bulldogs in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Michael Magazanik, a partner with Rightside Legal, said in a press release that Kneale would "hold the Bulldogs to account for the years of abuse, which began when Adam was just 11 years old".

"In 1993, when he was 21, Adam told his story to police, and Hobbs and another man were jailed," Magazanik said.

"Despite local media reporting at the time, he has never had any support or contact from the club. Adam has lived with the consequences for nearly 30 years.

"Adam is also grateful for the many messages of support he has received since his story was published. He hopes his story will give hope to other survivors and encourage them to seek help. He wants them to know they are not alone.

"Now he's now going to focus on his family, his own mental health and his legal claim against the Western Bulldogs.

"Adam is the first person known to have sued an AFL club over child abuse, and is likely to be the first of many.

"AFL clubs are going to be forced to face up to their histories and deal with the survivors who are no longer children, but adults wanting justice and compensation for the terrible damage that was done to them."

On May 1, Bulldogs chief executive Ameet Bains said the club was "shocked and dismayed" by Kneale's story.

"What Adam was subjected to as a child, and the impact it has subsequently had on the remainder of his life, is heartbreaking and distressing," Bains said in a statement.

"Football clubs should be a safe and enjoyable place for all people, especially children, so Adam's experiences and the fact that elements of this abuse occurred at the hands of a Footscray Football Club volunteer are simply devastating.

"We applaud Adam's courage to come forward and share the details of his story and we cannot begin to understand the trauma he and his family have been forced to deal with for more than three decades.

"The club will seek advice from police and expert agencies to ensure Adam and anyone else who may come forward are appropriately supported."

After the news that Joe Biden will be the next President of the United States, surely footy fans would excuse Carlton for making the most of his (admittedly loose) ties to the Blues that stem from his visit to Australia four years ago.

The former US Vice President received a Carlton jumper from then-skipper Marc Murphy on the MCG turf when he attended a round 17 game between the Blues and West Coast at the home of football in 2016.

Mr Biden was greeted by AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan, the AFL Commission's then-chairman and Carlton great Mike Fitzpatrick and the Melbourne Cricket Club's then-president Stephen Smith.

He watched the game with Australia's Foreign Minister of the time, Julie Bishop, and Collingwood forward Mason Cox was on hand as a fellow American to talk Biden through the finer points of the game.

For the record, the Blues lost by seven points to Ms Bishop's Eagles, despite the best efforts of Patrick Cripps and Bryce Gibbs. Eagles star Andrew Gaff earned the three Brownlow votes for a 30-disposal game on the wing.

Mr Biden isn't the first leader of the US to get up close and personal with the red Sherrin.

Back in 2011, Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard, a fervent Western Bulldogs fan, showed Barack Obama - whose predominant passion is basketball - the art of handballing during a visit to the Oval Office.

Who knows - perhaps footy could get a foothold in the White House second time around?
