>Cruz to get Nord Stream 2 vote as part of deal on Biden nominees
……. Even Friday evening, top Republicans accused Schumer of moving the goal posts, saying that he had asked for votes on roughly 35 nominees as part of the negotiations before going up to 42.
"They just keep changing the game. … Now they've completely changed the people on the list," said Sen. John Thune (S.D.), the No. 2 Senate Republican.
Asked as he went on the floor to vote if he felt talks were making progress, Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) said, "Not that I can tell."
But Schumer was able to clear a deal early Saturday morning that allowed the Senate to confirm 41 ambassadors, including former Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, before they left as well as nine judicial nominees.
The Senate will vote next month on legislation from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to impose Nord Stream 2 pipeline sanctions as part of a deal that allowed Democrats to clear dozens of President Biden's nominees.
Under the agreement, locked in during a rare all-night session, the Senate will vote on Cruz's legislation on sanctions related to the construction of the pipeline, which allows Russia to deliver natural gas to Germany, by Jan. 14. It will need 60 votes to ultimately pass.
The deal comes after days of negotiations between Cruz and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) that seemed to routinely yo-yo, even in the hours leading up to the agreement, from stalemate to progress and back again.
Cruz put a wide-ranging hold on Biden's State and Treasury nominees earlier this year, vowing to maintain the blockade until the Biden administration imposes congressionally mandated sanctions on the pipeline.
A hold by a senator doesn't prevent the nominees from being confirmed if they have the support of 50 senators, but it does require leadership to eat up floor time in order to get a final vote.
Cruz, even while largely maintaining his holds, has also let some nominees be cleared easily, including former Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Tom Udall (D-N.M.), who were confirmed to be the ambassadors to Turkey and New Zealand, respectively.
But the stalemate on dozens of Biden nominees, which frustrated Democrats, administration officials and even some Republicans, took on more urgency as the Senate headed toward the end of its work year. Absent an agreement with Republicans, Democrats would have to send nominees back to the White House at the end of the year and force Biden to renominate them.
Schumer and Cruz had previously agreed on a vote on Nord Stream 2 sanctions as an amendment to a sweeping defense bill in exchange for Cruz dropping holds on seven ambassador nominees.
But that package of amendments was blocked by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who wanted a vote on his proposal on banning imports from China's Xinjiang region, where administration officials have accused the government of carrying out genocide against Uyghur Muslims, or a vote in the House.
As part of the talks this week, Cruz initially offered to drop his holds on 16 State Department nominees, but Schumer and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) said Cruz had to drop his holds on all of his Treasury, State and U.S. Agency for International Development nominees in order to get a vote.
Speed and Range: Time to Give U.S. Army Aviation the Competitive Advantage
nstead, Senate Democrats ultimately agreed to a vote on Cruz's proposal but at a 60-vote threshold, meaning the Texas Republican will need to win over 10 Democratic senators to get his bill through the Senate.
German officials and the Biden administration have urged Congress not to impose sanctions over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, warning that it would undermine the trans-Atlantic alliance.
The administration imposed new sanctions last month on a ship involved in the construction of the gas pipeline, which is a top strategic priority of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Senate aides told The Hill during the debate over whether or not to give them a vote as part of the defense bill that Blinken was urging Democratic senators to block an amendment from by Sens. James Risch (Idaho), the ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Cruz to impose sanctions on the pipeline.

The Temporals of the Senate have attempted to kill me today after I posted a list of 44 of them that raped and murdered at the Langley VA MILAB so I decided to share a list of all Senators that are involved in MILAB Child Trafficking. When I was abducted and taken to the MILABS, I was raped by each and every male on this list, so I am far more than an eye witness. Including Rand Paul who raped me three times. I am sorry for those to continue to worship them, but they are due to be arrested soon. The R stands for # of children raped and the M is for how many they have killed.

Sept 11, 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre
The Mormons, dressed as Paiutes so they could blame the Indians, killed between 120-140 men, women and children. They tried to come up with all sorts of reasons, but reading the narrative, it appears it was to steal their livestock and rob the dead.
John D. Lee, an officer for the Mormon Militia ended up with a lot of the cattle and was the only one tried out of the number of men involved.
Here's something interesting. His descendants include Mark and Tom Udall.

>Trump endorses Adam Laxalt in U.S. Senate race
>Laxalt's father…
Pietro Vichi "Pete" Domenici (May 7, 1932 - September 13, 2017) was an American attorney and
politician from New Mexico. A Republican, Domenici served six terms in the United States Senate
from 1973 to 2009; he is the longest-tenured U.S. senator in the state's history. He was succeeded
by Democratic Congressman Tom Udall.
…
He received criticism for his environmental record and extramarital affair. Domenici chaired several
key committees including the Senate Budget Committee and the Senate Energy Committee.
In 1998, Domenici voted to convict President Bill Clinton during his impeachment trial.[10]
He explained his vote: What standard of conduct should we insist our President live up to? …
Do not underestimate, my friends, the corrupting and cynical signal we will send if we fail to
enforce the highest standards of conduct on the most powerful man in the nation.[17]
This was despite Domenici's own adulterous affair at age 50 with 24 year old, Michelle Laxalt,
daughter of his Senate colleague, Paul Laxalt. The affair, resulting in the birth of a son,
would remain secret for decades.[18]

Report: Several New Mexicans on Biden's short list for cabinet positions
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Several New Mexicans are being talked about as potential members of a Biden administration.
Politico listed Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham as a top pick for secretary of Health and Human Services. Lujan Grisham is a co-chair on Biden's transition team. In August, the governor spoke about what a Biden administration would need to tackle the pandemic.
"They are going to need, I think, a governor or health care expert that understands rural healthcare delivery and changes to the Indian Health Service system in order to really provide quality, affordable access," Gov. Lujan Grisham said. "Now that I said all that, and I expect to be in the mix about what they need to do in HHS and the Center for Medicare Services, this is the job I want… I I don't have a crystal ball that New Mexicans will invite me to stay another four years. I hope they do. This is where I want to be and this is where you can make the most difference."
If Gov. Lujan Grisham were to take a job in Washington, D.C., Lt. Gov. Howie Morales would finish her term.
Sen. Tom Udall is also talked about as a pick for the Biden cabinet. The publication reports that Udall may be a top choice for secretary of the Interior.
Udall is retiring from the U.S. Senate. However, he has said that he would like to continue serving the public. Udall's father was Interior secretary in the 1960s.
Politico also named U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich as a contender for the job. Heinrich has made a name for himself as an advocate for public lands. He sponsored the bill that changed White Sands to a national park. Rep. Deb Haaland is also reportedly in the running for the same position.
If appointed, Haaland would become the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary.

The Udall family is a U.S. political family rooted in the American West. Its role in politics spans over 100 years and four generations. Udall politicians have been elected from four different states: Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Oregon. If viewed as a combined entity, the Udall-Hunt-Lee family has been elected from six states: Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, and Utah.
Three Udall family cousins were nominated by the two major American political parties for the United States Senate elections of 2008, of which the two Democrats were elected and seated in 2009.

Every Democrat in the Senate has refused to say whether they support the removal of George Washington statues across the U.S., other than Democratic Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth, who said we "should listen to (the) argument."
The Daily Caller contacted every Senate Democrat's office asking them if they believe George Washington statues should be removed, as statues across the country have been destroyed by rioters or removed by local governments. In early July, Duckworth, a frontrunner to be vice-presidential nominee to 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden, said she would be willing to hear out arguments for removing statues of Washington.
"I think we should listen to the argument there," Duckworth said on CNN. "But remember that the president at Mount Rushmore was standing on ground that was stolen from Native Americans who had actually been given that land during a treaty."

Senate kills bipartisan bill to end war in Afghanistan & repeal 2001 Terror War authorization
The US Senate has voted to table a bill that would have ended the war in Afghanistan and repealed the 2001 law authorizing the War on Terror, shooting down a rare attempt to wind down the longest conflict in American history.
Lawmakers voted 60-33 on Wednesday to kill legislation introduced by Senators Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) and Tom Udall (D-New Mexico) as an amendment for a broader defense spending bill. Dubbed the AFGHAN Act, the measure would have directed the Pentagon to begin an "orderly withdrawal" from Afghanistan and pay a $2,500 bonus to American soldiers.
Ahead of the vote, Senator Paul castigated the nearly 20-year-old conflict as wasteful of American lives and tax dollars, urging lawmakers to send the troops home.
"It is not sustainable to keep fighting in Afghanistan generation after generation," Paul said on the Senate floor, noting that some of the soldiers taking part in the conflict were not even born when it was launched in 2001. "Many people have said we should end the war. Today you get to vote."
First introduced last year, the amendment also would have repealed the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) enacted in response to the September 11 attacks, which has been invoked to justify military action around the globe. Since the US invasion of Afghanistan, the AUMF has been cited dozens of times to authorize deployments, bombings or other armed operations in at least 14 countries.
Though a deal struck between Washington and the Taliban earlier this year initiated a phased withdrawal of the roughly 12,000 US soldiers stationed in the country, some 8,600 troops still remain there. The administration has reportedly mulled removing another 4,000 by the fall, but has yet to announce a decision. While US officials, including CENTCOM commander Frank McKenzie, say the Taliban has avoided attacks on coalition forces in recent months, ongoing disputes between the militant group and the Afghan government still threaten to derail the withdrawal deal.

Ex-CIA Agent Valerie Plame Lost Her Congressional Bid In The New Mexico Primary
Valerie Plame, the former CIA operative who was outed during the George W. Bush administration, has lost her bid to become a congresswoman after losing Tuesday night to attorney Teresa Leger Fernandez in the New Mexico Democratic primary.
Plame announced her candidacy in September 2019, The Daily Wire previously reported, in an attempt to fill a vacancy left by Rep. Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM), who decided to run for the Senate to replace Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM), who retired. Plame originally said she would run for Senate to replace Udall, but changed her mind for a congressional bid.
Plame used her fame from being outed in 2003 in an op-ed citing Bush administration officials to launch her candidacy. Her announcement video, however, was riddled with falsehoods, including her suggestions that she operated in Iran and North Korea and that Scooter Libby was responsible for her outing. Her opening ad also made it clear she was running because she had "a few scores to settle."
Plame's candidacy was plagued by accusations of racism and anti-Semitism. In 2017 - two years before announcing her candidacy - Plame resigned from her position on the board of Ploughshares Fund after retweeting an article blaming Jews for America's wars, The Daily Wire's Frank Camp previously reported. After a backlash, Plame defended her tweet, writing:
First of all, calm down. Re-tweets don't imply endorsement. Yes, very provocative, but thoughtful. Many neocon hawks ARE Jewish. Just FYI, I am of Jewish decent. I am not in favor of war with Iran, or getting out of the Iran nuclear treaty. There are simply too many who are so ready to go to war. Haven't we had enough for awhile? Read the entire article and try, just for a moment, to put aside your biases and think clearly.
The statement didn't help, so Plame tweeted a second response before resigning:
OK folks, look, I messed up. I skimmed this piece, zeroed in on the neocon criticism, and shared it without seeing and considering the rest. ... I'm not perfect and make mistakes. This was a doozy. All I can do is admit them, try to be better, and read more thoroughly next time. Ugh.

US senators urge extension to uranium import quota
A bipartisan group of US Senators has called for the Department of Commerce (DOC) to extend the Russian Suspension Agreement (RSA), as recommended by the Nuclear Fuel Working Group (NFWG).
The letter to Department of Commerce Assistant Secretary Jeffrey Kessler was signed by Senator John Barrasso, who is chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, and Senators Martin Heinrich, Lisa Murkowski, Joe Manchin, Mike Braun, Tom Udall, Kevin Cramer, Mike Enzi, Tom Cotton and Lindsey Graham. In it, the senators called for DOC to reduce imports of Russian uranium to below existing limits. This, they said, will protect the USA's natural uranium fuel supply chain from "aggressive and illegal trade practices of nuclear state-owned enterprises of foreign adversaries".
The NFWG was established by President Donald Trump in July 2019 to undertake a fuller analysis of national security considerations with respect to the entire nuclear fuel supply chain, following on from a presidential decision in response to a Section 232 Petition from two US uranium miners, Energy Fuels Inc and Ur-Energy, which called for a quota on uranium imports. The working group's report, Restoring America's Competitive Nuclear Energy Advantage: A strategy to assure US National Security, setting out recommendations to support US strategic fuel cycle capabilities and revitalise the sector, was published last month.

Turkey Threatens To Revoke US Nuclear Base In Incirlik After Sanctions Bill Advances To Senate Floor
On Wednesday morning the GOP-led Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted to advance Turkey sanctions legislation on an 18-4 vote, despite strong objections from the Trump administration. Senators Rand Paul, Ron Johnson, Ted Cruz, and Tom Udall vote against it.
At the same time, Ankara has threatened to take back US military bases at Incirlik and Kurecik in Turkey, the Turkish Foreign Ministry has announced, saying it would "reevaluate" their status.
Sanctions legislation had been stalled by the Republican majority Senate, with the Rand Paul leading the charge against the bill, in order to give Trump more time to make a deal with Turkey over its controversial purchase of the Russian S-400 anti-air defense system.
The House had passed its own sanctions legislation in October following Erdogan's ordered military incursion into northern Syria targeting US-backed Syrian Kurdish forces.
The bipartisan bill sponsored by Republican Chairman Jim Risch and ranking Democrat Robert Menendez along with 16 other senators.
"I was willing to let the people talk," Risch told reporters last week, "Very shortly thereafter it changed, and it has gotten worse instead of better." Risch added of the next vote: "I suspect that bill's gonna pass 98-2 on the floor."
The measures will including not only sanctions over the S-400 acquirement, but will target specific Turkish officials and institutions as well, including a ban on arms sales tied to operations in Syria.

Senate fails to approve Iran resolution, after longest vote in chamber's history
The Senate on Friday, after a record-breaking 10-hour vote, failed to approve a resolution that would require President Trump to get congressional approval before ordering a military intervention in Iran. The vote, which was not expected to pass, came after political unease over the White House's tough talk against Iran.
The vote was the longest in the chamber's history. The Senate closed its vote on the measure at 3:10 p.m. ET, which was 10 hours and 8 minutes after starting the vote. The old record for the length of a Senate vote was set on Dec. 21, 2018 at five hours and 20 minutes. The plan' needed 60 votes. But the final tally was 50-40. Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., who participated in Thursday night's Democratic presidential debate, voted at 3:10 p.m. in favor of the Iran amendment. Moments later, the vote was closed, and the Senate was quickly gaveled out of session. The effort will continue on the other side of Congress: The House is expected to take up the issue next month.'
Lawmakers have argued Trump cannot continue relying on the nearly two-decade-old war authorizations Congress approved in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Democratic Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico, an author of the measure, says he's not alone in raising concern about Trump's "ping-pong diplomacy" and "go it alone posture." "This reckless diplomacy is dangerously reminiscent of the run up to the war with Iraq," he said on the Senate floor Thursday.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called it nothing more than another example of "Trump Derangement Syndrome," which he explained as whatever the president's for "they seem to be against." McConnell said putting restrictions on the White House would "hamstring" the president's ability to respond militarily at a time of escalating tension between the U.S. and Iran.

Senate rejects attempt to curb Trump's Iran war powers
Senators blocked an effort on Friday to restrict President Trump's ability to go to war with Iran, handing a victory to Republicans and the White House.
More than 40 have voted against the proposal from Democratic Sens. Tim Kaine (Va.) and Tom Udall (N.M.), which would block the president from using funding to carry out military action without congressional authorization.
Though the vote remains open, the opposition blocks the proposal from getting the 60 yes votes it needed to be added as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). In a round of unusual procedural maneuvering, senators passed the mammoth defense bill on Thursday, but agreed to add the Kaine-Udall proposal retroactively if they could secure the votes.
Republicans, however, had appeared confident that they would be able to block it from getting added to the bill. If every Democrat supported the amendment they would still need to pick up 13 GOP senators, a heavy lift with the opposition from leadership. GOP Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Mike Lee (Utah), Jerry Moran (Kansas) and Rand Paul (Ky.) broke rank and supported the amendment.

Senate to Vote on Preventing Military Action Against Iran Without Congressional Approval
Senate will be voting on Friday on an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which would block the White House from taking military action against Iran without congressional approval.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Wednesday that a deal has been made to vote on the amendment on Friday.
"We intend to stay in session this week to finish the NDAA bill and allow for a vote in relation to the Udall amendment. Senators should plan to vote on Friday on the Udall amendment," McConnell said from the Senate floor, according to a report from The Hill. "Here's the good news, the vote will start first thing in the morning and be held open into the afternoon to accommodate as many senators as possible."
If passed, the amendment will block funding
The amendment was introduced by Democrat Senators Tim Kaine and Tom Udall, but has gained some bipartisan support. It is unclear if they will be able to pull over the 13 Republican votes needed to pass it, however.
A similar amendment has also been introduced in the House by Democrat Congressman Ro Khanna and Republican Senator Matt Gaetz.
"This amendment affirms what President Trump knows and believes: unfocused, unconstitutional, unending wars in the Middle East make America weaker, not stronger," Gaetz said in a statement. "Iran must be prevented from obtaining a nuclear weapon and threatening international peace, but Congress must resolve to ensure that any military action is carried out constitutionally."

Schumer: Trump must get congressional approval before any military action against Iran
Democrats told President Trump in a situation room meeting Thursday he needs to get congressional authorization before taking military action against Iran, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said.
"I told the president that these conflicts have a way of escalating. The president may not intend to go to war here, but we're worried that - and the administration may bumble into a war," Schumer told reporters at Capitol Hill after the meeting.
"We told the room that the Democratic position is that congressional approval must be required before funding any conflict in Iran," he continued. "One of the best ways to avoid bumbling into a war, a war that nobody wants, is to have a robust open debate and for Congress to have a real say. We learned that lesson in the run-up to Iraq."
Trump invited congressional leaders from both parties and chambers to the White House situation room to discuss Iran after Tehran shot down a U.S. drone.
The Wednesday night incident added uncertainty to what was already a volatile situation in the region, heightening fears of a military confrontation between the United States and Iran.
U.S. officials say the Navy RQ-4A Global Hawk surveillance drone was operating in international airspace above the Strait of Hormuz when an Iranian surface-to-air missile shot it down.
Iran holds the drone was operating in its airspace over the Hormozgan Province in southern Iran.
In his statement to reporters after the briefing, Schumer called on Senate Republicans to allow a vote on an amendment to the annual defense policy bill that would prohibit funds from being used for military operations against Iran without explicit authorization from Congress.
The amendment is being sponsored by Sens. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Tim Kaine (D-Va.), who were on the Senate floor at the same time as the briefing calling for a vote when the National Defense Authorization Act is debated next week.
"It's unfair to our troops to put them in harm's way with Congress hiding under their desk not being willing to state yea or nay about whether we should be engaged in hostilities," Kaine said.
Thursday afternoon's situation room briefing came after administration officials briefed congressional leaders on Capitol Hill in the morning.
Ahead of the afternoon briefing, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) told reporters Trump invited lawmakers to the White House despite earlier briefings because "he wants input" on what to do.
"If he's going to plan on having some ideas on what he wants to do, he wants to make sure there's not going to be a lot of outrage that nobody else knew about it," Inhofe said.
House Democrats also held their own Iran briefing Thursday with a trio of former officials: former CIA director John Brennan, Iran deal negotiator Wendy Sherman and former ambassador William Luers.

US Senators meet with Jewish leaders in semi-secret annual event
An article in the Times of Israel reports that "Jewish leaders are meeting with Senate Democrats today." According to the report, this is an annual event. A quarter of the Senate was in attendance (see list below).
All except one of the organizations represented by the Jewish leaders at the meeting advocate for Israel.
Several of the organizations participating are focused on preventing the erosion of support for Israel among Democratic voters. Recent polls show that the large majority of progressive Americans now support Palestinian human rights.
Many of the meeting participants, both Senators and Jewish leaders, are particularly known for their pro-Israel work. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer calls himself a "guardian of Israel."
Time, location, & agenda hidden from US voters
The meeting does not seem to have been announced publicly ahead of time, and staffers at Senate offices contacted for this article were not aware of it.
The chair for the meeting is Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, a 2020 presidential candidate.
Klobuchar is a strong Israel supporter and announces on her website that she supported the $38 billion package to Israel. (This amounts to about $7,000 to Israel per minute; approximately $20,000 per Israeli family of four.)
Klobuchar's office would not reveal the location or time of the meeting. It also would not provide the agenda.
The offices of other Senators reportedly participating in the meeting that were contacted for this article - Tim Kaine, Patty Murray, and Chris Koons - also refused to provide this information to the American public.

Millions more dollars to "nonprofits"
JTA Washington DC bureau chief Ron Kampeas reports in his email news letter that in addition to discussing Israel and antisemitism, "The Orthodox Union and the Jewish Federations of North America talked up legislation that would increase funding for security grants to nonprofits. A bill under consideration in the Senate ups the current $50 million to $70 million, and one in the House brings it to $90 million."
A 2014 article in the Jewish Forward reported that Jewish institutions got 94 percent of such grants.

Senate Committee Rejects Requiring Congress Sign Off on Iran War
Sens. Murphy, Udall pushed to block unauthorized attack
Congress never authorized a US war in Iran. Under the US Constitution, Congress has sole authority to do that, so that's seemingly an important deal. With the US engaged in other unauthorized wars, however, it has been little more than a side note, and the Trump Administration has considered Congressional involvement in the process to be optional, at best.
Sens. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Tom Udall (D-NM) led an effort on Wednesday to try to reassert Congressional authority, by trying to preemptively de-fund any US war against Iran unless Congress authorized it ahead of time.
This proposal was brought forward at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and immediately failed, 13-9. Murphy said this vote would remind the administration that they don't have authorization for the war.
Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan downplayed the matter anyhow, insisting that the US is focusing on "deterrence, not war," suggesting only Iranian miscalculation really threatened a war.

Latino group urges state lawmaker to make primary challenge to Democrat for Georgia House seat
An influential national Latino political group on Thursday launched a campaign to draft state Rep. Brenda Lopez Romero (D) to run for Georgia's 7th congressional district.
The campaign, dubbed "Run, Brenda, Run," was launched by the Latino Victory Fund, which last month ran a similar campaign encouraging Assistant Speaker Rep. Ben Ray Lujan (D-N.M.) to run to replace retiring Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.).
If Lopez enters the race, it could generate a contentious Democratic primary fight.
Rep. Rob Woodall (R-Ga.) won reelection in 2018 by just more than 400 votes over Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux, who has pledged to run again in 2020, and has raised more than $350,000 for her campaign.
The Latino Victory campaign comes with support from big names in the Georgia Democratic Party.
Both Georgia Assembly House Minority Leader Bob Trammell and House Democratic chair James Beverly spoke out to encourage López to challenge Bourdeaux.
"Brenda Lopez Romero is a proven legislator who knows how to get things done, and that's exactly why we need Brenda to run for the United States Congress. I proudly join this effort, because Georgia deserves a leader like Brenda in Washington," Beverly said in a statement.
Georgia's 7th district is a diverse and urban district that's been increasingly in the sights of Democrats.
It's a majority-minority district where 45 percent of the population is white, 21 percent is black, 14 percent is Asian and 19 percent is Hispanic.
Georgia as a whole has a significant and growing Hispanic population, but has never sent a Hispanic representative to Washington.
"State Representative Brenda Lopez Romero knows the importance of building a pipeline of qualified and viable Latino candidates in Georgia. I am proud to have worked closely with Brenda to make sure we are training the next Latino leaders in our state," said Jason Esteves, the Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education Board chair
"Now more than ever, we must show Brenda Lopez Romero that a grassroots army is ready to have her back and that we want her to run for Georgia 7th Congressional District," added Esteves.

Trump's Interior chief faces ethics investigation just days after being confirmed
The Interior Department's inspector general on Monday opened an investigation into David Bernhardt, Trump's newly appointed interior secretary. The Interior Department confirmed to the Washington Examiner that the investigation was initiated on Monday at the request of Democrats, just days after Bernhardt was confirmed by the Senate. Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Tom Udall of New Mexico requested the inspector general's investigation into whether Bernhardt violated lobbying laws while serving in his previous capacity as deputy interior secretary.
"Secretary Bernhardt is hopeful the Inspector General will expeditiously complete a review of the facts associated with the questions raised by Democratic Members of Congress and DC political organizations," said Interior spokeswoman Faith Vander Voort, rebutting accusations that Bernhardt had violated any rules or laws. She noted that the agency's ethics office had already conducted its review, determining that Bernhardt is in "complete compliance" with his ethics agreement and all applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

Teresa Heinz Kerry
She was born Maria Teresa Thierstein Simões-Ferreira in October 1938, to affluent parents of Portuguese descent in Maputo, Mozambique. While attending the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg during the late 1950s, she participated in protests against South Africa's apartheid regime. She graduated in 1960 with a bachelor's degree in Romance Languages. In 1963 she relocated to the U.S., where she worked as an interpreter for the United Nations.
In 1966 Teresa married billionaire and future Republican politician Henry John Heinz III, heir of the Heinz family condiments company. In 1971, when her husband was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Mrs. Heinz became a naturalized citizen and a member of the Republican Party.
In April 1991, then-Senator Heinz died in a midair collision between his airplane and a helicopter; his wife inherited the Heinz family fortune.
Teresa Heinz had met the man who eventually would become her second husband, John Kerry, at an Earth Day event in 1990. They were reunited in 1992 during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The couple wed in May 1995. Teresa would remain a registered Republican until Senator Kerry's presidential bid in 2004.
Four years earlier, Heinz Kerry had voiced support for John McCain, who, at the time, was rumored to be under consideration for selection as John Kerry's vice presidential running mate. In a July 2004 interview with Larry King, the following exchange took place:
Heinz Kerry: I like John [McCain]. I like John. I've even voted for John in Pennsylvania when he ran the last time.
King: You were a Republican, then.
Heinz Kerry: Yes, I voted for John McCain.
King: Would you have supported a Kerry/McCain ticket?
Heinz Kerry: I think one can say yes or no...
King: Well, you would have supported it, naturally.
Heinz Kerry: Well, if he'd chosen him, for sure.
In the same interview, Heinz Kerry said: "I've always worked on bipartisans [sic], whether it's on healthcare, drug reform, et cetera. All my work is bipartisan ... nonpartisan actually, because I look for solutions. I'm very practical."
Contradicting her claim of nonpartisanship, Heinz Kerry's political donations over the years have gone almost entirely to liberal and leftist Democrats. From 1979 to 2008, she made $144,472 in such contributions, of which $6,500 went to Republican candidates, $121,900 went to Democrat candidates, and $16,072 went to leftwing special interest groups such as the Committee for a Democratic Majority, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and Campaign For Our Country (a John Kerry initiative "to help build and expand the Democratic Party nationally"). Notable individual recipients of Heinz Kerry's donations included John Kerry, Tom Udall, Ted Kennedy, John Murtha, Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein, Barney Frank, and Barack Obama.

Outed CIA spy Valerie Plame set for Senate run as Democrat
Valerie Plame, the former CIA officer who shot to fame when she was outed during George W. Bush's presidency, is poised to run for U.S. Senate in New Mexico. The ex-spy told the Washington Examiner Friday that she would run as a Democrat and would "like another opportunity to serve my country." An early problem for Plame, 55, will be a 2017 anti-Semitism scandal. The subject will be tricky to navigate after the recent controversy involving anti-Semitic comments by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., which led to Speak Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., warning of "bigoted or dangerous ideologies masquerading as policy."
Plame was forced to apologize after sharing on Twitter an anti-Semitic article from the UNZ Review entitled "America's Jews Are Driving America's Wars." The article stated that Jews "own the media," that they should wear labels while on national television, and that their beliefs were as dangerous as "a bottle of rat poison." Her initial response was: "First of all, calm down. Re-tweets don't imply endorsement. Yes, very provocative, but thoughtful. Many neocon hawks ARE Jewish." But she later added: "OK folks, look, I messed up. I skimmed this piece, zeroed in on the neocon criticism, and shared it without seeing and considering the rest." She later apologized and resigned from the board of the Ploughshares Fund, which provides grants for projects aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. But in the space of three years she had posted nine UNZ articles including one titled "Why I Still Dislike Israel" and another about "Dancing Israelis" on 9/11.
Plame has been a strident critic of President Trump, launching a GoFundMe effort to buy a stake and ban Trump from the platform. It raised $89,719 toward its $1 billion goal. She has been active in Democratic politics since moving to Santa Fe, N.M., in 2007, after the scandal over the leak of her identity. She hosted a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton's super PAC in 2014 and another fundraiser for Clinton's presidential campaign in 2015. Conservative columnist Robert Novak revealed Plame's identity in a 2003 column, attributing the information to "two senior administration officials." Plame maintains that the leak of her name was "payback" from the Bush administration for her then-husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, writing an op-ed questioning the validity of the administration's intelligence used as a basis for the Iraq War.
Lewis "Scooter" Libby, former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was convicted in 2007 of perjury and obstruction of justice in connection to the leak of Plame's identity. It emerged that former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage was the primary source for Novak's story, but he was never charged. Donald Trump pardoned Libby in 2018, saying he was treated unfairly. Democratic New Mexico Sen. Tom Udall announced Monday that he will not seek re-election in 2020, opening up the field in a state that leans Democrat. Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, D-N.M., is expected to announce his candidacy next week. New Mexico's Democratic Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver and freshman Democratic Rep. Deb Haaland said in tweets that they are also considering running for the seat. On the Republican side, businessman and former U.S. Senate candidate Mick Rich said he is thinking about jumping into the Senate race. Former Rep. Steve Pearce and former Lt. Gov. John Sanchez are also rumored to be considering a run.

Dems introduce bill requiring disclosure of guest logs from White House, Trump properties
Democrats in the House and Senate on Tuesday introduced a bill mandating the publication of visitor logs at the White House and other personal properties where President Trump conducts business.
Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.), co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Transparency Caucus, introduced the Making Access Records Available to Lead American Government Openness (MAR-A-LAGO) Act, a nod to Trump's private Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. The legislation was first introduced in the previous congressional term.

Israel trying to provoke US into attacking Iran: Academic
An American writer and retired professor says Israel and its lobby in Washington, DC are trying to provoke the United States into attacking Iran by fabricating the notion that the Islamic Republic represents a threat.
James Petras, a retired professor who has written dozens of books on international issues with particular focus on Latin America, the Middle East and imperialism, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Thursday.
In a Washington Post article on Tuesday, two US senators warned that the administration of President Donald Trump "is barreling toward war with Iran," calling on Congress to act to prevent it.
Tom Udall (D-NM) and Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) said that Trump might wage a war on Iran based on a wrong justification like the one the administration of former President George W. Bush used to go to war with Iraq in 2003.

Q Research General #7132: Final Act Edition
Ron Paul explains HR 1. "This morning the House of Representatives rammed through their massive First Amendment-shredding legislation, H.R. 1.
The so-called "For the People Act" is really little more than a statist power grab designed to ensure the political Establishment can retain its control over the status quo.
H.R. 1, the "Establishment Protection Act," as we call it at Campaign for Liberty, is chockfull of censorship schemes designed to shut groups like ours up - or shut us down!
Not only that, but it would force groups like C4L to publicize and release the names of our supporters, making them vulnerable to threats, intimidation, or worse from radical left-wing mobs.
I hope you know I would shut the doors of Campaign for Liberty in a heartbeat rather than turn over names and personal information of even ONE of our supporters.
But just because Republicans control the Senate certainly doesn't mean you and I can assume this legislation won't go anywhere.
Instead there's never been a more important time to double-down!
Senator Tom Udall (NM) plans to introduce companion legislation next week.
In the past, one of the worst anti-First Amendment bills was sponsored and pushed through by the late-Senator John McCain.
You can guarantee statists are going to work hard to pick off the votes they need from Senators like Susan Collins (ME), Cory Gardner (CO), Lisa Murkowski (AK), and Lindsey Graham (SC).

'Time to declare victory!' US senators seek to end 'forever war' in Afghanistan
Senators Rand Paul and Tom Udall have introduced a bill to end the ruinously expensive conflict in Afghanistan, declaring 'victory' in the longest war in US history after 18 years, some $2 trillion and over 100,000 dead.
"It's important to know when to declare victory and leave a war," Paul (R-Ky.) said in a video announcing the American Forces Going Home After Noble Service (AFGHANS) Act, adding, "I think that time has long passed."

Senators Introduce Bill to Get US Out of Afghanistan
Sen. Paul says US should declare victory, withdraw
A bipartisan resolution has been introduced in the Senate on Monday calling for the US to withdraw military forces from Afghanistan. The bill is co-sponsored by Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Tom Udall (D-NM).
The resolution, called the 2019 Afghan Forces Going Home After Noble Service Act (AFGHAN Service Act), would declare victory. This is on the grounds that Osama bin Laden was killed in 2011 and al-Qaeda is all but eliminated within Afghanistan.
The bill goes further than just Afghanistan, too, as with the completion of the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, it would repeal the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF). Though the AUMF was initially passed to invade Afghanistan, it has been broadly expanded by presidents since as a legal justification for wars across the world.
The text of the bill calls for all US troops to be out of Afghanistan within a year of passage. It would also call for all US troops who were deployed in the Global War on Terror (estimated at over 3 million troops) to get $2,500 bonuses.
Sen. Paul addressed the bill, saying that the Global War on Terror had cost $6 trillion, adding that the war in Afghanistan should've ended years ago. Sen. Paul cited President Trump's admonishment that "great nations don't fight endless wars" while pointing out that military goals had all been achieved years ago. He warned Afghanistan had just become a war of nation-building.
It is likely that the administration will object to this bill, since they are in the process of negotiating a settlement of the Afghan War. This bill makes no provision for a negotiated deal with the Taliban, instead turning over all facilities to the Afghan government and withdrawing US troops.
Those wishing to contact their Senators to express support for the AFGHAN Service Act can find information to do so here. There is as of yet no specific timeline for a vote, but contacting them as early as possible may help rally support to advance the bill.

HOLY SHIT!
01/21 4 AM Those all technologies described below are truly "new" and monstrous. I was tonight (while being asleep) placed in the lab and there were some test and experiments done, I was sitting and crying, and my tears came mixed with blood. Real action was hidden behind "sweet DARPA dreams", they used to entrain my brain (I was buying some clothes etc). Here is an article, which best explains, what DARPA narrative network is about. Combine what you read in this article with the knowledge of implanted radios I have in both ears (and this is only one small part), to understand why I told that they entrain my brain with narratives to hide what they are doing to the clones, connected to my brain due to Elon Musk implants (neurograins) and nano robots circulating in my blood. There is also technology called Voice to Skull - in the case they did not secretly implant you with neurograins or neurodust (as explained in this Army declassified document about microwave), which can be used to beam sounds directly into your head, "treating" the whole house, all while you are sleeping.
Here is the list of senators I know in some capacity, while being abused for the development of military robot, and other projects as explained on this website and below. The whole project was supposed to be "top" military robot Sophia, which started after the first surgery in 2007. For many years it never crossed my mind that all problems I had after the surgery, were due to secretly implanted nano technologies. But Sophia has so many clones now - social, sex robot, little Sophia, cleaning robot etc., that it is difficult to keep track of all of them. One of Sophia clones ended in India, which makes complete sense to me. On the list of Senators here, most are men, except for the Gang from California. I am glad that they are not many.
Senators (list), who must have the knowledge of these projects: Doug Jones, Dianne Feinstein, Kamala Harris, Michael Bennet, Cory Gardner, Richard Blumenthal, Tom Carper, Rick Scott, Johnny Isakson, Jim Risch, Tammy Duckworth, Mitch McConnel, Bill Casidy, Ben Cardin, Gary Peters, Roy Blunt, Bob Menendez, Cory Booker, Tom Udall, Martin Heinrich, Chuck Schumer, Richard Burr, Tom Tillis, Rob Portman, Jim Inhofe, Ron Wyden, Pat Toomey, Jack Reed, Sheldon Whitehouse, Lindsey Graham, Lamar Alexander, John Cornyn, Mitt Romney, Patrick Leahy, BERNIE SANDERS, Mark Warner, Patty Murray, Joe Manchin, Mike Enzi, John Barraso. There is a reason why I "made bold" some of them; again I am glad that there are not many. The biggest surprise was Bernie Sanders, whose platform was not that much different from the goals I wrote for Occupy Wall Street in 2011.
Generals: Joseph F. Dunford, Paul J. Selva, Paul M. Nakasone, Philip S. Davidson, Terrence J. O'ShaughnessyCraig S. Faller, Raymond A. Thomas III, Stephen R. Lyons, Mark A. Milley, John M. Murray, Gustave F. Perna, Robert B. Brown, Robert B. Neller, John M. Richardson, James F. Caldwell, Jr., Christopher W. Grady, David L. Goldfein, James M. Holmes, Charles Q. Brown Jr., Tod D. Wolters.
It is beyond comprehension of an average human mind, why they would recruit for this unwanted "position" of military robot, a woman, born in foreign country, who came to US at the age of 39. I understand that this is very difficult to swallow, but again - if you send me any text of your choice in three languages in which I am fluent, I will be able to create a summary and tell you what it is about. This would be some type of "sanity test". You will need to do the same in languages in which you are fluent. Wish you sweet DARPA dreams, America. 01/20

There was a bipartisan delegation of US politicians to the Finnish president Sauli Niinistö, a little over a week in advance to Trump's visit.
https://twitter.com/jeffflake/status/1015002454382047232?s=21
Niinistö's PR person says that the meeting was scheduled before it was known that Trump and Putin would be meeting, but I think what happened is worth a mention anyway. In any case, both the upcoming NATO summit and the Trump/Putin meeting were discussed. I know that Jeff Flake at least is known for being opposed to Trump, and Ed Royce is not running for re-election, and that's just from what was barely more than a cursory glance. Niinistö in turn is a pro-EU globalist who was the Finance Minister during the successful push to make Finland join the EU. Right after the EU vote had come up "yes", it turned out that we had supposedly voted to give up the Finnish mark too. Strange how we weren't told about that ahead of the time. The knowledge could have flipped the vote. I was there and I remember it. Niinistö as the Finance Minister was an integral part of making Finland give up its own money with just a unilateral announcement from the government.

Daily on Energy: Scott Pruitt's ethics challenges a delight for Democrats
PRUITT'S ETHICS CHALLENGES A DELIGHT FOR DEMOCRATS: Some senators have made poking at Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt a major part of their job, especially during his recent spate of Capitol Hill visits.
- Pruitt vs. hump day: On Wednesday, Pruitt is scheduled to visit the Senate to defend his fiscal 2019 budget priorities, but all some lawmakers want to do is grill him over his numerous scandals involving excess spending, lobbyists planning lavish trips abroad, and big pay raises for his favorite staff.
- It's all about the transgressions: Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., sent out a statement Tuesday morning announcing his plans to take Pruitt to task over his "ethical transgressions." Pruitt is set to testify before the Appropriations Committee on Wednesday.
Udall is the top Democrat on the Appropriations panel for Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies, which is holding the hearing.
- Snowball effect: Although Udall says he also will ask Pruitt about his fiscal 2019 budget priorities, the questions about his ethics issues likely will set the tone for the hearing.
- House delves into policy: Also on Wednesday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee will hold a hearing on EPA reforms for power plants, with Pruitt's air chief, Bill Wehrum, testifying.

Went pretty well. Relatively big turn out (Cardin, Lugar, Tom Udall, Casey, Menendez, Shaheen, Coons, DeMint, Risch, and Lee). We planted a North Korea question with Cardin, enabling Wendy to take the issue off the table at the outset and taking some of the wind out of the sails of would be critics. Several questions on UN Palestinian statehood vote. A couple of questions on enduring Iraq troop levels, questions no doubt provoked by today's NYT front page article. DeMint's was the most confrontational, asking her if she subscribed to the administration's "philosophy of appeasement." She actually answered it pretty well, saying engagement and strength are not mutually exclusive. In the end, DeMint fell flat; got several emails from folks saying they thought her answer was great. Frankly, was a little surprised DeMint gave her the opportunity to clear the air and address that at her hearing. Finally, on Palestinian statehood, Rogin reported that Wendy got out ahead of the administration on veto of a UN resolution on Palestine in the Security Council. We spoke to Toria who thought it was fine. As I expected, no questions about clients, lobbying or any of the other red herrings. Here's the aforementioned Rogin piece: http:// thecable.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2011/09/07/wendy_sherman_promises_us_veto_of_palestinian_statehood_at un

EPA Chief's $43,000 Phone Booth
He must be pretty important:

Calls for Scott Pruitt, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, to resign escalated on Wednesday when nearly 170 congressional Democrats demanded his departure.
A resolution, sponsored by Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico and Representative Kathy Castor of Florida, that called for Mr. Pruitt's resignation drew 39 Senate co-sponsors. It was the largest number of Senators to ever sign on to a resolution calling for a cabinet official to be removed from office, according to Kara Baer, a legislative editor in the Senate Library.
The resolution is not likely to go anywhere without Republican support, which it lacks. Still, it highlights the pressure Mr. Pruitt already faces from nine investigations - by Congress, the White House and his own agency - into whether he misused taxpayer funding or violated other legal standards.
This week the Government Accountability Office, often called the watchdog arm of Congress, found that the E.P.A. broke the law when it spent $43,000 on a secure phone booth for Mr. Pruitt. And on Wednesday, the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget told Congress he also intended to examine Mr. Pruitt's spending habits.

https:// www.huffingtonpost.com/jon-soltz/mccain-poses-with-terrori_b_3360762.html
The photo of John McCain posing with terrorists and kidnappers in Syria encapsulates, perfectly, everything wrong with the position of McCain and others that the U.S. ought to insert itself into Syria's civil war.
To recap the past few days, talk of arming the Syrian rebels is heating up. In the Senate, the Committee on Foreign Affairs cast a 15-3 vote to authorize arming and training the rebels - Senators Tom Udall, Chris Murphy, and Rand Paul being the three courageous dissenters. Then, the Russians announced the shipment of advanced air defense missiles to the government of Bashar al-Assad. The European Union reacted in kind, voting to allow the arming of the opposing rebels.
It was revealed this morning that McCain, during his personal mission to Syria to meet with rebels, appeared in photos with Mohammed Nour and Abu Ibrahim, two members of the Sunni "Northern Storm" brigade, which kidnapped 11 Lebanese Shia pilgrims, who were on their way back to Lebanon, from Iran. The group is still holding nine of the hostages.
This should give everyone pause when it comes to ramping up support for the rebels by arming them.
McCain's office says that the senator didn't know who they were, and doesn't support their terrorist acts. I don't doubt that. But it precisely is the point. If a U.S. senator can unwittingly pose for pictures with terrorists in Syria, how can we guarantee that the arms McCain supports sending there won't also end up in the same place McCain did - with terrorists? The simple answer is that we can't.
What's worse, the Sunni side of the war, which McCain wants to support with arms, is not just affiliated with these kidnappers and terrorists, but also al Qaeda-affiliated groups, and Iraqi Sunni insurgents - the very same Iraqi Sunnis who killed American troops, and the Iraqi Army. That would be the Iraqi Army that McCain thought we should spend billions of dollars and thousands of American lives to establish. In fact, Syrian rebels affiliated with al Qaeda are responsible for the killing of nine Iraqi troops. We have every reason to expect that they will continue to target the Iraqi Army when they can.
The fact of the matter is, the other side is no better. The government of Bashar al-Assad has material support and manpower lent by Hezbollah and the Iranian government, which also targeted American troops in Iraq, by sending their advanced weaponry over the border. There's one more group supporting Assad - Iraqi Shia fighters. These would be many of the same Iraqi Shia who also targeted and killed American troops. Two of the most prominent Shia militias, Asaib al-Haq and Kata'ib Hezbollah, have already acknowledged their role in the Syrian war, on the side of Assad. Along with the Mahdi Army (which also has fighters in Syria), these groups were responsible for countless American deaths in Iraq.
So, yes, in many senses, the Assad regime and its supporters are enemies of the United States. They are responsible for targeting and killing Americans. But, in this case, the enemy of our enemy is not our friend. The enemy of our enemy killed American and Iraqi troops, and still seeks to bring down the government in Iraq of Nouri al-Maliki. Giving them arms would greatly advance that cause.
America has no natural ally in this fight. In fact, no matter who America supports, it ends up a net loss for us, just like in the war in Iraq. For that reason, those who stood up against the war, either from the outset or later on, have a duty to stand up against the idea of sending arms or training to Syrian rebels. For just as unleashing the bubbling sectarian conflict in Iraq and inserting ourselves into it was wrong, so is jumping right in to the same sectarian conflict in Syria. At some point, we must learn that we will never, ever successfully maneuver this millennia-old fight, and the best move for our own security is to stay out.
No matter how hard some may say we'll try to make sure that our weapons only end up in the hands of good Syrians who only want freedom for themselves, all they need to do is look at the picture of Senator McCain this morning to know that is just not possible.

'Cozy' relationship between Boeing and the U.S. draws scrutiny amid 737 Max 9 mess (NPR.com)
By Joel Rose
Friday, January 19, 2024 - 5:00 AM EST
When he was still the president of the United States, Barack Obama joked about having another job on the side: salesman in chief.
"I'm expecting a gold watch from Boeing at the end of my presidency, because I know that I'm on the list of top salesmen at Boeing," Obama deadpanned in 2013.
Boeing is no ordinary company. It's a pillar of the U.S. economy, both as a military contractor and in civil aviation. It claims to be the country's largest exporter.
But the longstanding special relationship between the U.S. government and Boeing has come under growing scrutiny, particularly after two crashes involving Boeing's 737 Max 8 plane, in 2018 and 2019. Those tragedies prompted significant changes, with a new CEO at Boeing and revamped oversight rules at the Federal Aviation Administration.
Now the latest safety incident involving a Boeing jet, the 737 Max 9, is raising difficult questions about whether that response went far enough.
Related Story: Amid scrutiny, Boeing promises more quality checks. But is it enough?
Investigators are still trying to determine why a panel blew off an Alaska Airlines jet in midair earlier this month. Federal regulators have grounded 171 Max 9 planes with similar configurations, while launching a review of Boeing's manufacturing and production lines.
The head of the FAA says it's time to reexamine the longtime practice of delegating some of the agency's oversight responsibilities to Boeing employees, raising the possibility of moving some of those duties to a third party.
That would be a remarkable shift in how the federal government regulates a company that is an icon of American industry and innovation.
The U.S. helps Boeing sell planes overseas
Boeing's importance to the economy extends far beyond the more than 140,000 people that it employs directly. The company also supports a network of suppliers and contractors that reaches across the country.
"Small businesses are up and down the supply chain," Obama said at the same meeting of the President's Export Council where he joked about earning a gold watch from Boeing. "And when we sell a bunch of airplanes, a lot of small businesses and medium-sized businesses are benefiting from that as well."
Obama isn't the only president to act as a cheerleader for Boeing.
"God bless you, may God bless the United States of America, and God bless Boeing," then-President Donald Trump said during a 2017 visit to a plant in South Carolina where the company builds its 787 Dreamliner.
When it comes to civil aviation, Boeing has no rivals based in the U.S. Its primary competitor, Airbus, is headquartered in Europe, though it does build some planes here.
Still, U.S. leaders are willing to put a finger on the scale in Boeing's favor.
The federal government has an official credit agency, the Export-Import Bank of the United States, that extends financing for overseas buyers. It's sometimes described as "Boeing's bank," because the company is such a big beneficiary.
The U.S. government is, in a literal sense, helping Boeing sell planes overseas - and these days, that largely means the 737 Max series. It is the company's best-selling plane, with thousands of pending orders, and is seen as crucial to Boeing's financial future.
None of this is supposed to affect how regulators at the FAA treat the company. But in the real world, Boeing wields a lot of power and influence in Washington.
"Boeing evidently does think it's too big to fail," Jim Hall, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said in a recent interview.
"It's not complicated. In Washington, D.C., as everyone knows, there is a great deal of influence exercised through fundraising to members of Congress," Hall said. "There's a great coziness or familiarity between all of the parties. And so, who's the bad cop?"
737 Max 8 crashes reveal systemic problems
Ties between the U.S. government and Boeing came under intense criticism after the 2018 and 2019 crashes involving the company's 737 Max 8 planes. A total of 346 people were killed.
After the first crash, of a Lion Air jet in Indonesia, Boeing maintained that the pilots were mostly to blame. Five months later, an Ethiopian Airlines plane went down under very similar circumstances.
Regulators in many other countries immediately moved to ground the Boeing Max 8. But the Federal Aviation Administration waited several days, making it one of the last agencies to take that step.
Related Story: Congressional Inquiry Faults Boeing And FAA Failures For Deadly 737 Max Plane Crashes
When congressional investigators started digging into what caused the crashes, they found a range of problems at Boeing - both with the design of the Max 8's flight control systems, and with pilot training - and they found insufficient oversight by the FAA.
At a dramatic hearing in October 2019, family members held up photographs of the crash victims while Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg testified.
"We can and must do better. We've been challenged and changed by these accidents," Muilenburg told members of Congress.
One of the parents in the hearing room that day was Nadia Milleron, whose daughter Samya Stumo was killed in the second crash. Milleron confronted Boeing's CEO after the hearing.
"I asked him to resign, because I said that he made decisions which killed people, and then he refused to acknowledge it," she told NPR's Morning Edition in an interview at the time.
"Our daughter got on the plane completely trusting," Milleron said. "And she never dreamed that there would be any problem with the plane itself, and there was a huge problem."
Muilenburg was pushed out of his job just a few months later.
"A case study of the complete and total failure of self-regulation"
Congressional hearings on the design and certification of the 737 Max 8 also brought to light some troubling internal emails from Boeing employees, who mocked their colleagues as well as regulators at the FAA.
"This airplane is designed by clowns who in turn are supervised by monkeys," one employee wrote.
Another Boeing employee wrote that a presentation for regulators was "like dogs watching TV," because the regulators didn't understand what they were seeing.
Related Story: Boeing Employees Mocked FAA In Internal Messages Before 737 Max Disasters
Investigators learned that Boeing had hidden key details about the 737 Max 8's flight control systems from regulators before they signed off on the plane's design.
They also found that FAA regulators had determined after the first crash that the Max 8 was likely to have the same problem again, but did not make those calculations public at the time.
That brought harsh criticism from safety advocates and Democrats on Capitol Hill.
"We must reexamine the current system that allowed for a much too cozy relationship between regulators and companies, including Boeing," then-Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., said at a hearing in 2020.
"This continues to be a case study of the complete and total failure of self-regulation," Udall said. "And I think this will go down as one of the big mistakes in history in this area."
A long history of delegating oversight to industry
The FAA has delegated some of its oversight authority to manufacturers since the 1950s. But regulators have come to rely more and more on Boeing over time, as its planes have gotten more complex and supply chains have grown longer.
This pattern accelerated in the early 2000s, says Peter Robison, an investigative reporter for Bloomberg News and the author of Flying Blind: The 737 MAX Tragedy and the Fall of Boeing.
Regulators at the FAA were pushed by the bosses to hand off more work to Boeing, Robison says - partly because they trusted that Boeing engineers knew the planes best and partly because it was cheaper for the FAA.
Related Story: What the 737 Max 9 incident says about the broader culture at Boeing
"What I traced was a distortion in the relationship where the regulator came to feel almost that it worked for Boeing," Robison told NPR's Here and Now earlier this month. "The managers worked very closely with Boeing to speed production of planes. And the managers at the FAA really came to treat Boeing as its cusTomer rather than the flying public as the people it was serving."
At the same time, Robison says, the corporate culture at Boeing was changing too, becoming more focused on profit and less on quality.
Max 8 crashes prompt sweeping changes
After the Max 8 tragedies, Congress passed bipartisan legislation aimed at preventing the company or the FAA from repeating the mistakes that led to the deadly crashes. The FAA made changes that were supposed to tighten up how its authority is delegated.
A new CEO took over at Boeing, pledging to restore the company's commitment to quality and safety.
After nearly two years, regulators cleared the Max 8 to begin flying again, and Boeing began trying to rebuild its reputation with airlines and the flying public.
Related Story: 2 major airlines find loose bolts, other problems on grounded Boeing jets
Then came Jan. 5, 2024, when a panel known as a door plug blew off a Boeing jet - this time a 737 Max 9 - at 16,000 feet, raising troubling questions for the company and the FAA once again.
There are several key differences between the Alaska Airlines incident and the Max 8 crashes.
No one was killed or seriously injured last month, although NTSB investigators said the incident could have been much worse had it had occurred at a higher altitude. And while the cause of the latest incident is still under investigation, it appears to be a problem in the manufacturing process, not a design flaw.
Still, Boeing's critics see a troubling similarity between the events. The company once again appears to be putting the botTom line ahead of safety, they say, by rushing planes off the factory floor at the rate of more than one per day.
This time, however, Boeing has moved quickly to own up to its mistake.
"This event can never happen again," CEO Dave Calhoun said at an all-hands meeting last week at a factory near Seattle. He told employees: "We're gonna approach this - No. 1 - acknowledging our mistake. We are gonna approach it with 100% and complete transparency every step of the way."
The reaction of the FAA has been different, too. This time, regulators moved quickly to ground all 737 Max 9 jets with door plugs. And they seem to be in no rush to recertify those planes to fly again.
Another look at how oversight is delegated
The FAA says it's now considering even bigger changes to the way it regulates Boeing.
"It is time to reexamine the delegation of authority and assess any associated safety risks," FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said last week. "The grounding of the 737-9 and the multiple production-related issues identified in recent years require us to look at every option to reduce risk."
Related Story: The FAA is tightening oversight of Boeing and will audit production of the 737 Max 9
Regulators say they will consider whether to move quality oversight and inspections to an independent third party.
That would be a major shift in the relationship between the FAA and Boeing - one that some safety advocates say is long overdue.
"This is a very smart move by the FAA," said David Soucie, a former FAA safety inspector and the author of the book Why Planes Crash. "The drive for profitability may just be overriding this ability to have an independent delegation within the organization."
It's a difficult moment for the FAA and Whitaker, who took over as administrator just a few months ago. FAA safety inspectors cannot inspect every bolt on every plane that leaves the Boeing factory. But business as usual at the agency no longer seems like a good option either.
What's at stake is how the FAA regulates one of the biggest companies in the aviation industry - and in the entire U.S. economy.

Democrat Senator Taken to Hospital For Brain Surgery After Suffering a Stroke
Carmine Sabia Carmine Sabia February 2, 2022
New Mexico Democrat Sen. Ben Ray Lujan has suffered a stroke and had to undergo brain surgery.
While all thoughts and prayer should be for his full and speedy recovery, there are some politics at play here as well.
President Joe Biden needs a minimum of 50 Senators to vote for his Supreme Court pick with Vice President Kamala Harris serving as the tiebreaker.
"He is currently being cared for at UNM Hospital, resting comfortably, and expected to make a full recovery," his chief of staff Carlos Sanchez said. "The senator's offices remain open and will continue providing constituent services to all New Mexicans without any interruption. The senator and his family would like to thank the wonderful doctors and staff at both UNM Hospital and Christus St. Vincent Regional Hospital for their excellent care during this time. Senator Luj?n looks forward to getting back to work for the people of New Mexico. At this time, he and his family would appreciate their privacy, and ask for your continued prayers and well wishes."
The New York Times reported:
Several Democrats said on Tuesday that they were relieved that Mr. Luj?n would recover, but declined to comment on the political implications of Mr. Luj?n's stroke, telling reporters they were concerned primarily about his health and were still processing the news.
"It's hard to evaluate what it means for here," said Senator Bob Casey, Democrat of Pennsylvania. "On the human level, it's scary. It just reminds all of us how good health is something we hope to be blessed by."
Mr. Luj?n joined the Senate last year, taking the open seat of the retiring Senator Tom Udall after a dozen years in the House, where he had been seen as an eventual potential replacement for Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
In his first year in the Senate, Mr. Luj?n introduced a version of the Native American Voting Rights Act, a bill that aims to ease barriers to voting access for Native Americans, a key constituency in his state.
Senate Majority Leader and New York Sen. Charles Schumer was one of the first to respond.
"My thoughts are with Senator Ben Ray Luj?n and his family. I'm so glad to hear that he will make a full recovery. We look forward to his quick return to the Senate," he said.

CNN reporter Morgan Rimmer noted the first, of what could be many issues for Democrats in his absence.
"Cantwell, chair of Senate Commerce, says that committee votes on the FCC and FTC nominees will 'have to wait until Senator Luj?n gets back,' underscoring again how difficult it is to balance a 50/50 Senate, down to the committee level," the reporter said.

Senate Democrats push constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United decision
7/30/2019
By Alex Swoyer - The Washington Times - Tuesday, July 30, 2019
Senate Democrats announced an effort Tuesday to amend the Constitution and give Congress more power to control spending in political campaigns, moving to overturn decades of First Amendment case law.
The immediate target is the Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision, which allowed interest groups to spend their money on advertising - though they still cannot donate directly to political campaigns.
But the proposed Democracy for All Amendment, sponsored by Sen. Tom Udall, would go further and overturn a series of rulings that have found campaign spending is political speech and therefore guaranteed the highest levels of protection under the First Amendment.
"Corporations are not people and your net worth shouldn't determine your right to free speech," the New Mexico Democrat said.
The seven senators who are running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination have signed on to the amendment.
Curtailing the effects of Citizens United has been a goal of Democrats since the 5-4 ruling was issued. But their efforts have regularly fallen short.
A similar proposal by Mr. Udall in 2014 reached the Senate floor, where it fell to a Republican filibuster. It earned just 54 votes, short of the 60 needed to overcome the filibuster and substantially less than the two-thirds vote needed to clear the chamber.
Sen. Richard Durbin, Illinois Democrat, said if Democrats win back the Senate in next year's elections, they will find a way to get the amendment through.
"We are going to have a leader who is going to guide us to make sure this becomes part of the law of the land," Mr. Durbin said.
Campaign spending has been recognized as a cornerstone of First Amendment free speech since a 1976 Supreme Court decision overturning parts of the 1971 Federal Election Campaign Act. Citizens United made clear that those free speech rights extended beyond campaigns, to include companies, labor unions and other interest groups that wanted to run ads backing their views during campaigns.

Q Research General #9421 CALL TO DIG CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATS!!! Edition
STEAL THIS POST!
These RAT BASTARDS need to go:
"The Republicans that voted for the resolution to end the national emergency to build a border wall are Sens. Susan Collins (CO-SPONSOR!) R-ME, Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Mike Lee (R-UT), Rob Portman (R-OH)."
Senate Democrats passed Wednesday a motion to end President Donald Trump's national emergency declaration to build a wall along the southern border.
The Senate passed S.J. Res. 54, 54-41, which would terminate President Trump's national emergency declaration on the southern border. The resolution was created by Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) and co-sponsored by Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Susan Collins (R-ME).
Sen. Collins said the bill is not about "whether you're for or against a border wall." The Maine senator, who is up for a tough reelection fight in 2020, claimed that she has "consistently supported" funding for physical barriers on the southern border.
However, Congress has failed to provide significant funding to help secure America's southern border by building a border wall. With Congress' failure to provide funding, President Trump declared a national emergency to build the border wall, which diverted military funding so that the president can build a wall along the southern border.
The Republicans that voted for the resolution to end the national emergency to build a border wall are Sens. Collins, Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Mike Lee (R-UT), Rob Portman (R-OH).
The vote arises as the Pentagon announced in September that they will delay or suspend 127 military construction projects so that $3.6 billion can be diverted to help secure America's southern border.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that many Republicans might decide to vote with Democrats because local military bases' funds have been diverted towards funding the wall.
"I don't think anyone, no matter what state they are from, will want to see money being taken away from their military installations, [which is] very much needed," Schumer said Tuesday.
Congressional Democrats failed to pass the resolution to override Trump's national emergency in March, which failed to override the president's veto.
