The World of High Finance, Mass Shootings, and Conspiracy Theories
"Unsolved Mysteries" was a prominent American television show. It's still seen on late-night TV sandwiched between "infomercials" for the Pocket Fisherman and Popeil's AuTomatic Peach Defuzzer.
If you've never seen the show, a brief recap may help explain the connection between Libor (London Interbank Offered Rate) and two mass shootings in America.
Robert Stack, Unsolved Mysteries' host, would do a voice-over at the beginning of each episode. The commentary would usually go something like this:
"In California, a young wife parks her car and unloads groceries as her 4-year old daughter watches. Meanwhile, in the Canary Islands, a former-cyberhacker from Russia is enjoying the beach while a respected Manhattan attorney is ordering a bagel and coffee at Starbucks. Coincidence? You decide."
Mr. Stack would then eat up an hour of air time as the show tried to create a conspiracy theory out of completely random and unconnected events.
The Shootings
Adam Lanza's, the Newtown, Connecticut school shooter, father is Peter Lanza. The senior Lanza is a Vice President and Tax Director at GE Financial.
The father of Aurora Colorado movie theater shooter James Holmes is Robert Holmes, the lead scientist for FICO, the credit score company.
Both fathers were set to testify in front of the American Senate about the Libor scandal.
The odds of both Aurora and Newtown connected to one of the largest financial scandals historically is slim. The connection is leaving some to wonder where the shooters got their training. Others wonder if there was a subplot involved which permitted the young men to do what they did.
The links between the Aurora massacre and the one in Newtown could have deeper ramifications for individuals involved in the Libor scandal.
Or not.
Meanwhile in Tokyo at Swiss bank UBS' Japan office, Tom Hayes sat fascinated before a bank of computer screens. Hayes, who had gotten an early morning wake-up call from his boss, was told to get to the office. In New York, Lehman Brothers was blazing through money on its way to bankruptcy and Hayes watched the news and panicked.
Each market became bathed in red on Hayes' monitors as the market opened and investors dumped their holdings. Hayes went into an almost unconscious state and began to mentally process the tsunami of information as he calculated the best escape route.
Before the early morning crisis, Hayes had been a prodigy at UBS. The growing financial crisis had been good to him, and the economic chaos allowed him to buy cheaply from investors wanting out. While most traders closed up shop in panic, Hayes, who thrived on risk, stayed in and was up over $70 million for the year and he was just 28-years old.
All of that was under threat, and Hayes clawed desperately to get himself out of every deal he had done with Lehman. While Hayes studied his trading book, one rate stood out more than another other: Libor.
For traders like Hayes, the Libor benchmark was the Holy Grail and 24-months before Hayes had discovered a way to game the system.
LIBOR is the average interest rate at which financial houses can borrow from each other. 16 international banks were implicated in the scandal which alleged contracts, worth trillions, were manipulated.
Powerhouse HSBC was fined almost $2 billion and watched as three low-level traders were arrested. American regulators, alongside regulators from the European Union, fined involved banks over $9 billion. Since 2015, law enforcement authorities have continued to bring criminal charges against individual traders and brokers for their part in artificially restructuring the rates.
What about Tom Hayes? He was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
In true Robert Stack fashion, one press release pointed to the dual mass shootings, the fathers' testifying and Libor and said: "This coincidence is impossible to overlook. Two mass shootings connected to LIBOR."

Remember when they tried to get you to believe that people were just dropping dead in the streets in the very beginning of all this fake pandemic scare? Fear-based control. Two Barclays Traders Handed Jail Sentences For Euribor Manipulation
(one trial starts-for the flash crash one-and another ends)
Two former traders from Barclays were sentenced to as much as five years in prison by a London judge for manipulating a benchmark interest-rate in favor of their bank's trading positions. As Bloomberg reports, with today's sentencing the judge meant to put those still working in the industry on notice that similar transgressions would lead to extended time spent being Bubba's bunk mate.
Former swaps trader Carlo Palombo received a four year sentence and his colleague, Colin Bermingham, got a five year sentence. They'll both be eligible for parole after serving half of their prison time. Another Barclays trader, Sisse Bohart, was acquitted last week.
The traders were charged with manipulating the Euro interbank offered rate, which is tied to trillions of dollars of loans and derivatives. The rate is calculated with submissions by major banks and is supposed to reflect the cost of borrowing between them. The convicts were accused of rigging the rate between 2005 and 2009.
The judge, Michael Gledhill, said in his remarks that he wanted to send a message to others in the industry. "Those convicted of manipulating interest rates will face substantial custodial sentences," he said.
The verdicts were a victory for the UK Serious Fraud Office, which is frequently criticized for mishandling high profile cases. However, that hasn't stopped the agency from accumulating other convictions against prominent bankers. For example, UBS LIBOR trader Tom Hayes was found guilty in 2015 and Deutsche Bank's Christian Bittar was found guilty last year.
Palombo and Bermingham's prosecutions hit road bumps early on when multiple defendants refused to come to the UK for trial.
Lisa Osofsky, director of the SFO said: "These men deliberately undermined the integrity of the financial system to line their pockets and to advantage the banks they worked for. We are committed to tracking down and bringing to justice those who defraud others and abuse the system."
Palombo's lawyer John Hartley said: "This is a very disappointing end to a very hard fought case. He and his family are of course devastated by the outcome and he will need some time to come to terms with this decision while we consider the issue of any appeal."
hroughout the trial, both defendants maintained there was nothing wrong with taking a trader's positions into account while setting the rate, as long as the bank still submitted a legitimate rate from within a range. And even in the Judge's remarks, he noted that there was no code or definition that gave guidance or assistance as to how the panel banks should determine the rates they submit.
Despite this, the judge said the traders' actions were contrary to the spirit of the code and that senior managers should have been aware of it.
Judge Gledhill said: "That failure might be thought by an interested observer to be at best foolhardy, if not utterly negligent. It was an open door for those involved in the conspiracy to manipulate, or attempt to manipulate, the Euribor rate for the advantage of their own bank's trading positions."

They decided to be 'first'. Was it no wonder that they were ceremoniously taken down right as the '08 crash began to pick up speed?-not at all. Follow the wives in this case as well. Fuld's wife had all of his asset's placed in her name shortly before that picked up steam.

America's Massive Truck Driver Shortage May Triple by 2026: Experts
The driver shortage is the result of an aging workforce, high turnover and increasing freight demand
Wanted: truck drivers.
Amid an otherwise strong corporate earnings environment, cost inflation within the trucking and freight industry is becoming a real concern for many companies.
"It's a real bear," Tyson Foods (TSN - Get Report) CEO Tom Hayes told TheStreet about the inflationary pressures of the shortage.
Approximately 60,000 drivers are needed to meet robust demand for trucking services, and that may be a conservative estimate. The shortage could be upwards of 100,000 or more, Seaport Global Securities LLC analyst Kevin Sterling told TheStreet.
The driver shortage stems from several factors, according to Sky Harbor's Director of Research Michael Salice. Those factors include an aging workforce, high driver turnover rates (above 90% at present), reduced capacity as a result of regulatory changes, increasing freight demand, inflationary pressures, and "lifestyle priorities" that make competing industries more attractive.
Considering these issues, "industry experts fear the current shortage (~60,000 drivers) may nearly triple by the year 2026, absent any meaningful changes," Salice wrote in a research note.

Axon Partners With a Public Hospital to Re-brand Stun Guns as Lifesaving Devices
Last month, an article in the Star Tribune revealed a disturbing partnership between Axon Enterprise Inc. (Taser) and a public hospital.
For 14 years Axon has been paying the Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) more than $1.1 million to help convince juries and the public that Tasers are lifesaving devices. Axon has been paying two doctors between $20,000- $36,000 a year to write hundreds of Axon-funded stories and serve as Axon medical advisors.
Two researchers in leadership positions at HCMC have served as medical advisers for Axon, and the hospital's research arm conducted 22 Axon-funded studies, hospital records show. For at least eight years, Axon paid the hospital's chief medical officer, Dr. William Heegaard, $20,000 annually to serve on the company's medical advisory board until he resigned this year. Heegaard has disclosed in studies that he also has owned Axon stock.
Dr. Jeffrey Ho, medical director for EMS at HCMC, doubles as Axon's contract medical director for at least 32 hours per month. Every three months, the hospital bills Axon $34,344 to cover Ho's shifts while he's working for the company, records show. Ho bills the company directly for outside work, which amounted to $36,000 last year, according to Hennepin Healthcare spokesman Tom Hayes.

Import taxes imposed on foreign goods entering the U.S. and retaliatory tariffs other countries are placing on American-made products are dominating the conversation during the latest rash of earnings calls.
The Charlotte-bsed steelmaker, which has plants in Berkeley County and Darlington, reported its best second-quarter numbers in the company's more than 50-year history. Profits more than doubled for the period, buoyed by 25 percent tariffs on imported steel - typically cheap metal from China dumped on the American market.
All in all, we're very happy with tariffs, Ferriola told stock analysts.
Tom Hayes, on the other hand, isn't so pleased. The Tyson Foods president said in a regulatory filing that the chicken and processed meat company will cut its full-year earnings expectations by as much as $1 per share because of trade worries.
