Indictment information

A 33-year-old former Tacoma resident has been indicted for allegedly damaging multiple energy facilities across western Washington, according to a news release Thursday from acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller.

Federal authorities said Zachary Rosenthal and his accomplices aimed to knock out power to disable security systems, making it easier to burglarize nearby businesses and ATMs.

"The idea was to knock out the power in a particular area, and then Rosenthal and his conspirators would then target either local businesses or ATM machines that were within the area that the power was out that were then, easier targets at that point with alarm systems and the light being deactivated," Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg said.
Rosenthal is accused of attacking six power substations in the South Sound and Southwest Washington between June and December 2022. Court documents state the group targeted facilities in Lewis, Cowlitz, Pierce, Thurston, and Grays Harbor counties, causing outages that affected up to 6,000 customers at a time. The suspects allegedly used firearms, heavy chains, and physical force to damage electrical equipment.

"Sometimes they just damaged the equipment in a control room by smashing in and breaking it," Greenberg explained. "Sometimes they use the firearm to shoot into some of the tanks to disable of the system. And other times they used the metal chains which they threw onto equipment which caused short circuits and then power outages."

Seattle Woman Sentenced to Five Years in Prison For Torching Police Cars During BLM Riot

A Seattle woman has been sentenced to five years in prison for torching police vehicles during a Black Lives Matter riot in 2020.

Margaret Aislinn Channon, 26, pleaded guilty to arson for using aerosol cans as a blowtorch to light the cars on fire. She also broke windows, looted stores, and smashed police equipment.

Much of Channon's destruction was captured on video.

"According to the plea agreement, Channon appears in videos from the protest in downtown Seattle wearing distinctive clothing and showing tattoos on her hands and arms. Channon is captured on video using fire and aerosol cans to light five Seattle Police Department vehicles on fire," the Department of Justice said in a press release. "She is also shown entering various stores and removing items of clothing. She admits smashing the window at the Verizon Store, and entering a sandwich shop and destroying the electronic cash register. Investigators identified Channon based on her clothing, tattoos, and information from her various social media accounts."

Channon was arrested in June, 2020. Law enforcement executed a search warrant at her home in Tacoma and seized clothing and accessories that appear in some of the videos from the arsons.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Channon is responsible for restitution.

During her sentencing, the judge criticized Channon for making the Black Lives Matter movement look bad, saying she did "tremendous damage to Black Lives Matter in Seattle."

"The right to protest, gather, and call out injustices is one of the dearest and most important rights we enjoy in the United States," said U.S. Attorney Nick Brown, according to a report from the Seattle Times. "Indeed, our democracy depends on both exercising and protecting these rights. But Ms. Channon's conduct was itself an attack on democracy."

Brown said Channon "used the cover of lawful protests to carry out dangerous and destructive acts, risking the safety of everyone around her and undermining the important messages voiced by others."

The prosecution had argued that Channon put everyone in danger, as one of the cars could have exploded.

"Hundreds of people were standing in the vicinity of the police cars that Channon burned, some only a few feet away," wrote Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg. "All of them were in harm's way if one of the vehicles had exploded."

NRL boss Todd Greenberg has stood down amid mounting financial pressure on the game due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown.

Greenberg made the announcement on Monday afternoon and in a statement said it had been an 'honour' to oversee the national rugby league code.

'It has been my great honour and privilege to be the CEO of the NRL for the last four years,' Greenberg said.

'Despite the variety of challenges and pressures I have loved every single minute of the journey. Our growth over the last 4 years has been extraordinary and I am very proud of my contribution to the game.'

Greenberg's decision to quit follows increased scrutiny on him in recent weeks, after the full state of the league's financial woes were laid bare amid the COVID-19 crisis.

It was revealed the league's head office was operating at a cost of almost $500,000-a-day, which is believed to have lost Greenberg the support of the clubs and ARL.

The NRL is desperate to get its players back on the park with serious fears not doing so could result in permanent financial ruin for some clubs.

Players have already been told they will have to take pay cuts up to 87 per cent due to the coronavirus crisis, while clubs have begun sacking coaching and front office staff.

Pressure on Greenberg only grew last week NRL TV rights holder Channel Nine hit out at 'mismanagement of the code' in recent years, in a bombshell statement.

'At Nine we had hoped to work with the NRL on a solution to the issues facing rugby league in 2020, brought on so starkly by COVID-19,' the statement began.

'But this health crisis in our community has highlighted the mismanagement of the code over many years. Nine has invested hundreds of millions in this game over decades and we now find they have profoundly wasted those funds with very little to fall back on to support the clubs, the players and supporters.

Huawei Corporate Entities Enter 'Not Guilty' Pleas - Agreed Trial Date of March 2020

Seattle - Huawei Device Co., Ltd. and Huawei Device USA Inc. were arraigned today on charges of theft of trade secrets conspiracy, attempted theft of trade secrets, seven counts of wire fraud, and one count of obstruction of justice. The companies entered pleas of 'not guilty.' Chief U.S. District Judge Ricardo S. Martinez set trial for March 2, 2020.

The indictment, returned by a grand jury last month, details Huawei's efforts to steal trade secrets from Bellevue, Washington based T-Mobile USA and then obstruct justice when T-Mobile threatened to sue Huawei in U.S. District Court in Seattle. The alleged conduct described in the indictment occurred from 2012 to 2014.

Under the maximum sentencing provisions applicable to corporate entities, Conspiracy and Attempt to Commit Trade Secret Theft are punishable by a fine of up to $5,000,000 or three times the value of the stolen trade secret, whichever is greater. Wire Fraud and Obstruction of Justice are punishable by a fine of up to $500,000.

The charges contained in the indictment are only allegations. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes. If convicted of any offense, the sentencing of the defendants will be determined by the court based on the advisory Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The case is being investigated by the FBI. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Todd Greenberg and Thomas Woods of the Western District of Washington, with assistance from the Department of Justice's National Security Division's Counterintelligence and Export Control Section.

U.S. Attorney Brian T. Moran has been recused from this matter because of legal representations he undertook before he joined the Department of Justice. Per direction from ethics officials in the Department of Justice, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Annette L. Hayes will act as U.S. Attorney with respect to this matter pursuant to the authority conferred by 28 U.S.C. § 515.

Durkan. The company, PRECISION IMAGE CORPORATION, is operated by owner, CHIH-KWANG HWA, out of his Woodinville home. HWA obtained contracts to supply circuit boards to the U.S. Navy by falsely claiming the boards would be manufactured in the United States. Instead HWA illegally sent restricted information to a company in Taiwan for the boards to be manufactured there. The company faces a fine of up to $1,000,000 and HWA faces up to 20 years in prison when sentenced by U. S. District Judge James. L. Robart on October 28, 2013.

"Our national security depends upon protecting our military systems and their specifications. Going 'on the cheap,' gave this defendant an unfair advantage over other suppliers and risked our security," said U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan. "Protecting our military technical data and enforcing our export restrictions are critical priorities of the U.S. Attorney's Office."

According to the charging information and the plea agreements in the case, between 2009 and 2011, HWA obtained contracts worth $180,034 to supply circuit boards to the U.S. Navy. The Navy supplied technical data to PRECISION IMAGE that contained the technical specifications for the circuit boards. This technical data was designated on the United States Munitions List, International Traffic in Arms Regulations. As a result, this technical data could not legally be transmitted outside the United States without a license from the U.S. State Department. CHIH-KWANG HWA knew about this restriction at the time he received the technical data from the Navy. HWA did not get the appropriate licenses, and sent the restricted data to the Taiwan manufacturer. One of the transmissions occurred in September 2011, and the Taiwanese manufactured circuit boards were later provided to the Navy. In addition, many of the contracts awarded to HWA were set aside for companies that promised to manufacture the boards in the United States. HWA falsely represented to the Navy in connection with these contracts that the boards were being manufactured in the United States, when instead they were being manufactured in Taiwan.

"U.S. export controls are in place to keep sensitive technology from falling into the hands of our nation's enemies," said Brad Bench, special agent in charge of HSI Seattle. "One of HSI's highest priorities is to prevent illicit procurement networks, terrorist groups, and hostile nations from illegally obtaining military items and controlled dual-use technology."
