CHICAGO - Freshman U.S. Rep. Mary Miller of Illinois drew swift criticism from fellow Republicans Wednesday for quoting Adolf Hitler in a speech a day earlier outside the U.S. Capitol.
Miller, elected in November to replace Republican John Shimkus, spoke Tuesday during an event by conservative group "Moms for America," as demonstrations in support of President Donald Trump began in Washington D.C.
Miller - speaking a day before violent Trump supporters stormed the Capitol - read from prepared remarks, urging the need to appeal to young people in politics.
"This is the battle," she said according to video posted by WCIA-TV. "Hitler was right on one thing. He said, 'Whoever has the youth has the future.'"
The comment is often attributed to Hitler, who organized youth groups to introduce children to Nazi ideologies.
Illinois Republicans including U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger and state GOP Chairman Tim Schneider condemned the comments.
"That language is wrong and disgusting. We urge Congresswoman Miller to apologize," Schneider said in a statement.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat who is Jewish, called the remarks "unfathomable."
"Let me be clear: Hitler got nothing right," he told reporters Wednesday. "This reprehensible rhetoric has no place in our politics."
The head of the World Jewish Congress, an international organization, blasted Miller's comment as "simply outrageous."
"One might expect this from white supremacists or neo-Nazis, but hearing the words 'Hitler was right' from the mouth of a member of the United States Congress is beyond acceptable behavior by any standards," Ronald Lauder, the group's president said in a statement.
Miller, elected to public office for the first Time, runs a farm with her husband, Republican state Rep. Chris Miller. Her congressional district covers a wide swath of southern and eastern Illinois along the border with Indiana.
Messages left Wednesday for spokeswomen for Miller and "Moms for America" weren't returned.

Justice Kavanaugh denies emergency request from Illinois GOP groups seeking to hold large rallies
The Illinois Republican Party is continuing to push the lawsuit forward in the lower courts, but the Supreme Court will not be stepping in to permit political gatherings.
Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh on Saturday denied an emergency appeal submitted by GOP lawmakers from Illinois that had argued against the governor's restrictions on meeting in groups larger than 10 amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Illinois Republican Party filed a suit in the U.S. District Court in mid-June after Democrat Gov. J.B. Pritzker permitted religious groups and protestors to convene in large gatherings. Political gatherings and rallies remain banned in the state due to the recent pandemic.
The request went to Kavanaugh based on geography alone. The Illinois Republican Party is continuing to push the lawsuit forward in the lower courts, but the Supreme Court will not be stepping in to permit political gatherings.
Kavanaugh, who received political backlash from the Democratic Party after being recommended for the seat by President Trump in 2018, has reportedly denied the request without comment, rather than refer the request to the full Supreme Court.
The lawsuit claims that "in-person contact is the most persuasive form of communicating ideas" and the restrictions infringe on their First and 14th Amendment rights.
"Democrats in the state hold almost every lever of power, and the only thing providing a check on their power, the Illinois Republican Party, isn't even allowed to get together to meet or to properly plan and network for an election [that] is only five months away," Illinois Republican Party Co-Chairman Tim Schneider told the Chicago Times last month. "This is fundamentally wrong, and as this lawsuit contends, a violation of our First Amendment right."

BAKER NOTABLE:
Illinois Gov Pritzker Under Federal Investigation
Gov. J.B. Pritzker, his wife First Lady M.K. Pritzker, and others are under federal criminal investigation for a dubious residential property tax appeal that critics highlighted in last year's gubernatorial race.
WBEZ first reported the federal probe, citing information from a law-enforcement source familiar with the investigation.
Pritzker's attorney denied any wrongdoing.
"Neither the Governor nor the First Lady have been contacted by law enforcement regarding the property tax appeal," Attorney Marc Elias said in an email to Illinois News Network. "We are confident that any further review of the matter will show that the appropriate rules were followed."
Pritzker, whose net worth is esTimated at $3.2 billion, paid back the more than $330,000 he got in tax breaks for removing the toilets to have a mansion he bought deemed uninhabitable. He paid back the money in October, days after a leaked report from a Cook County watchdog surfaced. A Cook County inspector general report about the 2015 tax break called it a "scheme to defraud" taxpayers.
Political opponents pounced on news of the federal probe.
"Gov. Pritzker should immediately abandon his push for this massive jobs tax on middle-class families because he can't expect people to pay more when he is reportedly under criminal investigation for gaming the system to pay less," Ideas Illinois Chairman Greg Baise said.
Ideas Illinois has been opposing the governor's proposed progressive income tax.
"The governor likes to call his push for more taxes 'fair' but it's clear he knows nothing about fairness or equity - he needs to drop his push for this Jobs Tax that will only hurt middle-class families even further," Baise said.
Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider compared Pritzker's decision to pay back the $331,000 to a bank robber returning stolen money after getting caught.
"Just because he gave the money back means nothing to me," Schneider said in an interview. "He schemed to defraud the taxpayers of the county. He technically took money out the school system, to pay for our cops, to further burden other taxpayers because he didn't pay his fair share."
Schneider also said he was glad the investigation was being looked at by federal officials.
"I've seen silence on the part of the Cook County State's Attorney," Schneider said of Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx. "I think she botched the Jussie Smollett case and we don't even know if she's investigating this on the Cook County level and I'm grateful that the feds have picked up the batton on this case."
WBEZ reported that it wasn't clear if any criminal charges were imminent; it also reported that "the scope and intensity of the federal investigation is not entirely clear."
I'm so happy about this. I'm an Illinois resident and hate this man.

Illinois RepublicanParty Pulls Support for 'Conspiracy Theorist' Candidate for Telling the Truth About 9/11
>The Illinois Republican Party said it can no longer support the challenger to U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Moline) after he posted a variety of conspiracy theories on social media.
>The Moline Dispatch reports state GOP chairman (((Tim Schneider))), Rock Island Republican Party central committee chair Drue Mielke, and 17th District state central committeeman Jan Weber all pulled their support of Republican Bill Fawell of Galena's campaign against the incumbent Democrat.
>The three all cited posts on Fawell's campaign Facebook page touting theories about the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Sandy Hook school shooting and other events. Posts on Fawell's page cited by the Dispatch variously attribute the 2001 attacks to the CIA, former Vice President Dick Cheney, and a controlled demolition by the New York City Fire Department.

>Illinois congressional nominee Bill Fawell has lost support from the Republican Party after promoting a variety of conspiracy theories, including that Israel was one of the "masterminds" of 9/11, Media Matters reports.
>Fawell, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary in Illinois' 17th district, has peddled conspiracy theories on his "Elect Fawell" Facebook page. Posts range from calling Sandy Hook a "false flag," to pushing the validity of the "Pizzagate" conspiracy theory.
>In the posts Media Matters uncovered, Fawell called 9/11 another "false flag" whose "masterminds" were "our CIA and Israel's Mossad." Allegations that Israel was connected to the 9/11 attacks appear in four different posts from 2016 on.
