'Greatest enemy': Sydney man who gave alleged shocking anti-Semitic speech unmasked
A Sydney man who is alleged to have made an anti-Semitic speech during an anti-immigration rally on Australia Day has appeared in court for the first time.
A Sydney man alleged to have told an anti-immigration Australia Day rally that Jewish people were the "greatest enemy to this nation" can be unmasked after he appeared in court in a bid to be released on bail.
Brandan Koschel, 31, was arrested under the state's race hate speech laws after making an alleged anti-Semitic speech at the March for Australia at Moore Park on Monday.
Mr Koschel, who took to the stage in front of hundreds of fellow protesters during an "open mic" session, is alleged to have been aligned with a prominent neo-Nazi group.
He was stopped and arrested in Surry Hills a short time later and was charged with publicly inciting hatred on grounds of race causing fear.
In court on Tuesday, police opposed his release on bail, citing the risk of Mr Koschel committing further offences and endangering the safety of the community.
Mr Koschel's speech was livestreamed on YouTube and X, the court was told on Tuesday.
Police have alleged that he told the crowd that the Jewish community was the "greatest enemy to this nation" and "the greatest enemy to western civilisation".
Mr Koschel is alleged to have referenced the state's new race hate speech laws, which came into effect in August last year, before allegedly breaching them.
His speech was described by the police prosecutor as "brazen" especially in the wake of the Bondi terrorist attack.
Mr Koschel's solicitor Jasmine Lau told the court the Rockdale man had a limited criminal history.
She argued that in the event he is convicted, it was unlikely that he would be sentenced to fulltime custody.
The court was told that police alleged that Mr Koschel was a member of the neo-Nazi group the National Socialist Network (NSN), which earlier this month said it would disband due to federal laws.
"There is no allegation that he has any ongoing affiliations with any active groups," Ms Lau told the court.
The prosecution has alleged that Mr Koschel was with known members and associates of the NSN during the rally.
The court was also told that Mr Koschel referenced NSN leaders Joel Davis and Thomas Sewell in his speech and told the crowd "heil White Australia".
Mr Koschel was wearing a shirt emblazoned with the Celtic cross, but denied the image was associated with the NSN.
Magistrate Daniel Covington described the charges as serious and the prosecution case as "strong".
"It is a serious set of facts alleged to have occurred in a situation where the community is very acute to comments of this nature," Mr Covington told the court.
"It's not only being made privately or on the internet, this is suggested to have occurred in public, it's filmed and it's streamed. And the comments, on the face of it, are concerning.
"It's not an insignificant example of this kind of offence and it's a serious offence."
Mr Covington said he could not be satisfied that Mr Koschel would abide by bail conditions and dismissed his bail application.
Mr Koschel will remain in custody on remand until at least his next appearance in court on February 3.

Neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell crashes premier's press conference
"Why don't Australians have the right to protest?" Sewell could be heard saying.
"Why do you want to ban us from protesting? Shouldn't we have the right to speak in our own country?"?
Sewell was held back by security as Allan and Symes quickly left.

Australian neo-Nazis suspended from X
Australia's most prominent neo-Nazis have been banished from Elon Musk's X platform in an apparent crackdown on homegrown extremism.
National Socialist Network leaders Thomas Sewell and Blair Cottrell had their accounts suspended on Tuesday, two days after this masthead reported Australian white supremacists were thriving on the platform and generating millions of views on posts often vilifying minority groups and calling for a white Australia.
The profiles of the two Melbourne men were shut down along with those of at least four other leading members of the Australian neo-Nazi movement that recently held rallies in the streets of Adelaide, where 16 members were arrested, and on the steps of Victorian Parliament where they held up a banner reading "JEWS HATE FREEDOM".
It is not yet clear if Australian agencies sought the bans, which come at a time of heightened concern about antisemitic incidents and ASIO's warnings about a probable terror attack driven by mixes of "twisted" ideologies - including anti-government conspiracy theories, racism, Islamist extremism and neo-Nazism - blending with social media-fuelled personal grievance.
The eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, who along with the Coalition raised the alarm about the neo-Nazi rise in this masthead's report on Sunday, has been contacted for comment, as has the office of Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke.
Joel Davis, an Australian neo-Nazi whose account was not suspended, reacted with fury to the news on Tuesday, while other far-right accounts complained about the apparent clamp instituted by Musk's anti-censorship platform.
"These two men and several other nationalists were all censored off X this evening in a clear co-ordinated mass banning most likely requested by some department of the Australian government," he wrote on X.
"No doubt you don't agree with many of our views, but these are political figures of serious notoriety in Australia. Unelected bureaucrats shouldn't have the right to sabotage the voice of its own citizens on ideological grounds."
White supremacists and leaders of the National Socialist Network were previously banned or censored on X before returning as the platform reduced moderation, removed all staff in Australia and reinstated thousands of banned accounts.
Meta's Mark Zuckerberg has announced similar moves on fact-checking at the same time as Labor sought to clamp down on social media, including a ban on teens under 16 using certain sites.

Senator Payman's announcement on Wednesday that she would lead a breakaway political party named Australia's Voice has angered some of Australia's most distinguished Indigenous figures, who are in solemn reflection over the defeat of the voice referendum a year ago on Monday. Uluru Dialogue co-chair Megan Davis, a Cobble Cobble woman and constitutional expert who worked on the voice process for 12 years, described Senator Payman's announcement on Wednesday as "curious timing given it's the anniversary of the referendum and many of our people are still grieving". Four months since she crossed the floor to vote for Palestinian statehood, the West Australian senator launched the Australia's Voice party in Canberra where she saying her policy platforms would "come with time". In a later interview on ABC, she described Palestinian recognition as overdue. Indigenous entrepreneur Sean Gordon, who joined fellow political conservatives in supporting the Indigenous voice through the Uphold & Recognise collective, said he saw the name of the new party as part of persistent and wrong-headed efforts to link the Indigenous rights movement with pro-Palestinian activism. "The use of the term 'voice' by Fatima Payman for her new political party is a further attempt by the pro-Palestinian movement to leverage of the back of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people," Mr Gordon said. "This is no different to the pro-Palestinian movement who drowned out our voices on Australia Day early this year."

Far-right extremist Jacob Hersant to be jailed for Nazi salute but length of sentence still to be determined
Leanne Wong - 9 October 2024
The first person found guilty of performing the Nazi salute in Victoria will be sentenced to jail.
Far-right extremist Jacob Hersant was found guilty on Tuesday of performing the gesture last year, after a magistrate rejected his argument the laws were constitutionally invalid.
The 25-year-old was the first Victorian charged with performing the Nazi salute in October 2023, just six days after new legislation banning the gesture came into effect.
This morning, Magistrate Brett Sonnet found the only "appropriate sentencing order" was a term of imprisonment, but said he was not yet in a position to determine the length of the sentence.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of $24,000 or 12 months' jail.
Hersant walked from court today after the magistrate allowed him to remain in the community until sentencing in four weeks' time.
Outside the court, Hersant told reporters he had no regrets about the conviction.
His associates, including prominent neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell, made anti-Semitic comments as they left.
During today's hearing, Prosecutor Daniel Gurvich KC argued Hersant's prospects of rehabilitation were "poor to non-existent", and said his performance of the Nazi salute was "calculated to achieve maximum impact".
"Public expression of Nazi symbols are an assault against human dignity and representative of hatred and prejudice that have no place in Victoria," Mr Gurvich said.
But Hersant's defence lawyer Timothy Smartt argued his client was a "supportive partner" and "fantastic father" to his two-year-old son.
He told the court Hersant enjoyed writing poetry - even taking part in a recent poetry competition.
Mr Smartt denied the poetry involved far-right themes, after being asked by the magistrate.
"So in a sense your client is a modern-day version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde," Magistrate Sonnet said.
Lawyers for Hersant seek fine instead of jail
Mr Smartt acknowledged Hersant's views were "seriously concerning" but argued he was better than his "worst deeds".
"He's not the first young person to have extreme political views and he's not the last," Mr Smartt said.
He requested the court impose a $1,500 fine.
But during today's hearing, Magistrate Sonnet said "powerful" mitigating factors for Hersant's sentence were missing, citing his lack of remorse, his absence of guilty plea and his criminal history.
On Tuesday, after being found guilty, Hersant told reporters he would continue to perform the Nazi salute - just not in front of police.
Hersant was outside the County Court last year, having just been sentenced for another offence, when he raised his arm and made a salute in front of journalists.
He quickly lowered his arm and said: "Oh, nearly did it, it's illegal now isn't it?"
As he walked away, Hersant called out: "Australia for the white man, heil Hitler."
On Tuesday after finding Hersant guilty, Magistrate Sonnet said Hersant knowingly performed the salute, which he described as "an inherently political act" intertwined with Nazi ideology.
The magistrate said laws were necessary to protect vulnerable minority communities.
In a summary read out to the court, the magistrate said he rejected arguments from Hersant's lawyers that the laws were in breach of the constitution.

White supremacist Jacob Hersant to involve nation's top lawmakers in Nazi salute case
Aneeka Simonis - February 2, 2024
A white supremacist who was first to be charged with performing a Nazi salute in Victoria plans to drag the nation's top lawmakers into his legal case.
The Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday heard neo-Nazi Jacob Hersant, 24, required an adjournment of his matter due to a related "constitutional argument".
His lawyer, Sandra Gaunt, told the court her client intended to file notice of his argument with senior politicians, including Commonwealth Attorney General Mark Dreyfus and state Attorney General Jaclyn Symes.
The notice relates to section 78B of the Judiciary Act 1903 which "involves a matter arising under the Constitution or involving its interpretation".
It states that it is the duty of the court not to proceed in the case until it is satisfied that notice of the matter has been given to the Commonwealth and state attorneys generals.
"They may seek to be an interested party," Ms Gaunt told the court.
No further details of the constitutional argument were aired in court.
However at a previous hearing, Hersant told media outside court: "We should have free expression in this country. These laws are built on emotion and are anti-white".
Hersant performed the Nazi salute in front of media outside the County Court in late October after he and Thomas Sewell, the self-proclaimed leader of the National Socialist Network, were sentenced over a violent clash with bushwalkers at Cathedral Range State Park in May 2021.
Both men pleaded guilty to violent disorder over the incident, in which three bushwalkers who filmed the men were terrorised.
Hersant was sentenced to three days' prison time, already served, and ordered to perform 200 hours of community work.
Sewell was sentenced to one month and seven days' imprisonment - time he also already served.
Afterwards, Hersant raised his hand in a salute, stating: "Heil Hitler".
His gesture was made less than a week after Victoria's Nazi salute laws came into effect.
In December, Hersant told media he was not remorseful for the action and continues to perform the gesture daily.
The matter will return to court on February 29.

In a separate incident on Sunday morning, there was a heavy police presence at Artarmon Reserve as the members group once again gathered in public.
Pictures from the scene showed police watching on as a group of black-clad men congregated at the suburban park.
NSW Police said on Sunday morning that a police operation had concluded with no arrests after the group moved on without incident.
Police, including officers from the Raptor Squad and Public Order and Riot Squad, were called out to the reserve after the group of approximately 30 men began to gather around 8.30am.
"The group … was verbally served an updated Public Safety Order prohibiting them from entering further Sydney local government areas," NSW Police said.
"The group dispersed and there were no arrests."
Following the public incidents involving the National Socialist Network, Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-CEO Alex Ryvchin said he was "heartbroken and alarmed by the return of genocidal antisemitism".
He said recent public displays of antisemitism should be a "source of shame" for society and were a "deep collective reflection on how little we have learned".
"We are reminded that the desire to destroy the Jews has not diminished, only the means to carry this out has been temporarily suppressed," Mr Ryvchin said.
"The audacity of anti-Semites in Australia, the freedom of mainstream online influencers, Neo-Nazi cells and supporters of jihadist terror to incite against our community with virtually no consequences, is particularly chilling."
Police stormed North Sydney train station on Australia Day following reports a group of about 60 men were boarding a train into the city wearing balaclavas and all-black outfits.
The men are affiliated with the National Socialist Network, which is led by convicted criminal Thomas Sewell.
Police arrested six members of the group on Friday morning and issued 61 infringement notices for offensive behaviour. Two members have since been released without charge.
It follows the NSW government's recent announcement that it will be conducting a review into section 93Z of the Crimes Act, which legislates laws against publicly threatening or inciting violence against someone based on the grounds of race, or religious belief or affiliation.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Saturday joined in the condemnation of the group's behaviour.
He said he was "horrified" by the images.
"I don't want to see people in balaclavas, dressed in black from head to toe, who are engaged in neo-Nazi activity in this country," he said.
"It has no place and it has rightly been condemned by all decent people".

'Unmask you': Premier Chris Minns' threat as Nazis gather in Sydney
STEVE ZEMEK and JESSICA WANG - JANUARY 28, 2024
1/2
NSW Premier Chris Minns has warned he is prepared to unmask people involved in the latest neo-Nazi gatherings in Sydney after police halted two demonstrations in less than 24 hours.
After police stopped a group of men wearing black clothing and balaclavas associated with the National Socialist Network on a train at North Sydney Station on Australia Day, police again broke up meetings of the far-right group at North Turramurra on Saturday evening and Artarmon on Sunday morning.
Premier Chris Minns labelled the group as "pathetic" and their behaviour as "fascist" and "ridiculous".
"Those who are attempting to menace people in an anonymous way in NSW, the police have the ability to unmask you," he said.
"So, in front of your family, your friends, your employers, your co-workers, you will be exposed as a massive racist."
The Premier has said he would be open to strengthening laws against "White Power salutes".
"We are looking at the laws and examining them to make sure that overt Nazi gestures and symbols are outlawed in New South Wales, and we'll make sure that the people of New South Wales are safe and we protect the tenants of our multicultural, harmonious community," he said.
It is the third day in a row that a group of masked men wearing all back have gathered in Sydney.
At North Turramurra on Sydney's upper north shore on Saturday evening, the group's leader Thomas Sewell was given a public safety order extension, banning him from several parts of Sydney until midnight on Sunday.
"Police have served a 31-year-old man with a Public Safety Order extension, prohibiting him from entering a number of local government areas in Sydney until midnight (on Sunday)," NSW Police said in a statement.
"The order extension was served (on Saturday) evening at North Turramurra."
On Saturday night, police descended on North Turramurra where dozens of members of the neo-Nazi group were meeting.
One local witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said the group began assembling around the local scout hall in the afternoon.
"There were a large number of young men in attendance, but also some young women, mostly wearing black clothing, and the scout hall was definitely open and ostensibly being used by the group," the resident told NCA Newswire.
A large police presence was seen around the hall, including about 10 police cars.

Anthony Albanese says neo-Nazi activity has no place in Australia
TRICIA RIVERA - JANUARY 27, 2024
Anthony Albanese has condemned the group of more than 60 men who attempted to stage an Australia Day protest as "white Australians", and says neo-Nazi activity has no place in Australia.
As the nation marked January 26 either through celebrating the country's national day or an 'Invasion Day' protest, dozens of balaclava and black-clad neo-Nazis tried to enter Sydney's CBD to hold a rally.
White supremacist Thomas Sewell, the head of Melbourne-based National Socialist Network, led the men into the city but the group were held on a train by police in North Sydney.
"Well, I was horrified by those images. They have no role in Australia," the Prime Minister said on Saturday.
"I don't want to see people in balaclavas dressed in black from head to toe, who are engaged in neo-Nazi activity in this country. It has no place and it is rightly being condemned by all decent people."
The Prime Minister noted the rise in extreme right wing activity and thanked NSW Police for preventing "what could have been a very dangerous activity".
"And on Australia Day, where we commemorate everything that is great about this country. We have a responsibility. We have to look to what unites us, not what divides us," he said.
"I say again, that people have a responsibility to avoid some of the activity that we've seen in promoting hatred in promoting division, because it is not the Australian way."
NSW Premier Chris Minns echoed the comments and said he would be open to strengthening laws against "white power salutes".
"There is no place for this kind of fascism, Neo-Nazism or far right extremism on this great day, Australia Day," he said.
"And the vast vast majority of people who live in the state would reject any notion or idea that far right extremists and neo-Nazis are needed on our national day."
In the same press conference, Mr Albanese continued to defend his government's tax backflip and has branded the stage three changes as "the right decision".
The Labor caucus unanimously endorsed the rewriting of the tax package, which the Prime Minister repeatedly promised would remain unchanged, with those on incomes under $150,000 to benefit the most.
The revised stage three plan will now see Australians earning $150,000 or more receive less of a tax cut than they would have under the Coalition's legislated package.
ACT independent senator David Pocock flagged his support for the reforms, but called on the government to use savings from the new package to increase welfare payments.
The Prime Minister stood by the tax changes formally announced earlier this week but said there was "no surplus money".
"One of the things that we have done is make sure that the $106 billion package, now a $107 billion package, we made sure that it was revenue neutral," he said.
"We know that low and middle income Australians are under financial pressure. It's a responsibility of the government to do something about it.
"We have made the right decision for the right reasons. And this will help particularly Middle Australia."
He said the reforms ensure every Australian gets a tax cut and batted away suggestions the rejig of stage three marked the start of his election campaigning.
"This is a response to Australians being under financial pressure," he answered.
"We want the fight against inflation to be front and centre."

North Sydney: Balaclava-clad, chanting neo-Nazis held on Sydney train by police
Madeline Crittenden, Linda Silmalis and Brenden Hills - January 26, 2024
1/2
Clad in balaclavas and black military-style uniforms, about 70 members of a neo-Nazi group boarded a train full of families in an attempt to stage their own pro-White Australia Day rally in Sydney yesterday.
In dramatic scenes, the group from the National Socialist Network were intercepted by police at North Sydney Station before becoming involved in a tense stand-off in a nearby park with heavily armed officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad.
The group were banned from taking part in Australia Day events before being escorted up the Pacific Hwy under the watch of the police helicopter and a large procession of police cars.
During the stand-off, the group's leader, convicted criminal and known far-right extremist Thomas Sewell, delivered a monologue to the throng of police calling them "cowards" and claiming his group was only planning to hold a peaceful "pro-white" rally in the Sydney CBD.
But Premier Chris Minns said: "Normal people don't celebrate Australia Day with a balaclava on".
"There is absolutely no tolerance for this behaviour," Mr Minns said.
Sewell claimed the group was planning a peaceful protest and said: "Unless someone attacks us, there's no violence."
On a day where the temperature nudged 40 degrees, concerned families watched as the group clad in military style boots and black uniforms with white power symbols on them boarded a train at Artarmon Station after midday.
At least one was holding a riot shield while others waved Australian flags, witnesses said.
The group demanded the train doors be left open as they marched onto a carriage in front of increasingly concerned families and children.
"They were all in the back carriage. I just thought: 'These guys look like trouble'," Jason, 48, from Baulkham Hills, said.
Jason said they ruined the Australia Day plans of himself and other passengers.
"I was hoping to see The Roulettes," he said. "I knew something was amiss after we left Artarmon and the train started to go really slow. After it got to Waverton and switched tracks, I knew something was really wrong."
The train driver terminated the journey at North Sydney Station, where scores of police held the train for three hours.
The officers evacuated members of the public before detaining the members of the white supremacist group.
Police demanded IDs from the men and ordered them to remove their masks before detaining those who refused to co-operate.
A police spokesman said six people were arrested and 55 people were given infringement for offensive behaviour on public transport. Investigations are continuing and police expect to lay charges.

>>19597168 'I'm with you': US rapper MC Hammer throws support behind Voice to Parliament sparking fiery debate on Twitter - MC Hammer, famed for his 90s smash hit U Can't Touch This, has thrown his support behind the Yes vote ahead of the Voice referendum - but the move has sparked fiery debate on social media. The American rapper said he had spent time reading articles and "getting up to speed" on the Voice to Parliament referendum, which is just three weeks away. Hammer took to X overnight to back the proposal, telling his 3.1 million followers: "I'm with you. Australia it's time. Repair the breach. #Yes2023." He pointed out Australia "has no treaty with its Indigenous people and has done little in comparison to other British dominions like Canada, New Zealand and the United States to include and uplift its First Nations people". Hammer also referred to prominent Yes campaigner Professor Megan Davis and credited her efforts in educating people on the importance of Indigenous constitutional recognition. Quoting Ms Davis, Hammer said: "A successful referendum will set a precedent that will be 'really useful for other indigenous populations around the world in relation to recognition'."
>>19601872 Hundreds of anti-Voice protesters rally in Sydney, Melbourne - Anti-Voice rallies in Sydney and Melbourne today were much smaller in scale than the official Yes campaign marches last weekend. In Melbourne, neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell gatecrashed the end of the No rally with a group of people wearing black masks, unfurling a banner on the steps of Victoria's state parliament that read "Voice = anti-white". The group performed a Nazi salute and were heckled by other protesters, who were largely drawn from the anti-lockdown rallies that filled the city's streets during the pandemic but have since dwindled in numbers to about 500 on Saturday. The rallies, which were held in cities around the country, were organised by pro-Kremlin activist and anti-vaccination campaigner Simeon Boikov, who is known online as "the Aussie Cossack".
>>19606805 No vote gains more ground amid a loss of support for Peter Dutton - National support for the Indigenous voice to parliament has failed to gain the expected campaign momentum heading into the final weeks before the October 14 referendum, with only slightly more than a third of surveyed voters now saying they will vote yes. But the further decline in support has also coincided with a sharp fall in Liberal leader Peter Dutton's approval ratings following a heated political debate over race, with satisfaction in the ?Opposition Leader's performance now at a record low. According to an exclusive Newspoll conducted for The Australian, 36 per cent of surveyed voters say they intend to vote yes. This reflects a two-point fall in the past three weeks and a continuation of the erosion in support since the beginning of the year.
>>19606828 RedBridge poll finds voters don't think Voice to Parliament is a top-5 priority - Hardly any Australians rank the Voice as the top priority issue for the federal government, according to a new poll that has also found support for the referendum has fallen to 38 per cent. The latest RedBridge poll, taken last week, found that despite Yes23 and the Uluru Dialogue stepping up their advertising spend, support for the Voice is still falling. The poll found that nationally the percentage of people planning to vote for the Voice has dropped by another percentage point since the start of the month. The last RedBridge poll, taken at the start of September, found support had fallen 5 per cent to 39 per cent in the month since its previous survey.

Death threats from Ben Roberts-Smith supporters aimed at journalist
Calum Jaspan - October 3, 2023
Supporters of disgraced former SAS soldier Ben Roberts-Smith have directed a number of death threats at investigative reporter for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age Nick McKenzie since May, when a judge ruled in favour of his reporting on alleged war crimes committed by Roberts-Smith.
In June, Justice Anthony Besanko ruled that on the balance of probabilities Roberts-Smith was guilty and complicit in the murder of four unarmed prisoners in Afghanistan.
It was a decision several years in the making, following extensive reporting by McKenzie and Chris Masters, who were both subsequently sued for defamation by the former soldier and former Seven Network executive.
"Good morning Nick. I hope you receive the same punishment that Ali Jan allegedly received... just sleep on it mate," McKenzie was told in a phone message in July, referencing one of the victims of Roberts-Smith.
Members of a Facebook group "We stand with Ben Roberts-Smith VC MG" lobbied others to attend scheduled dates for McKenzie's and Masters' book tours in July and August.
The group, which has more than 3700 members, was made private in July after one of its admins, Western Australian woman Linda Deval, was contacted by this masthead over a post claiming it had the support of Roberts-Smith and his family.
"Will be there in Canberra July 26th to let him know fear," read one comment under the username Gary Redman, residing in the NSW town of Bermagui, on a post urging members to attend dates on McKenzie's book tour.
"Do everyone a favour and walk in front of a bus you piece of scum," read an email sent directly to McKenzie from an account under the name Gary Redman.
Redman purchased a ticket to one of McKenzie's public tour events at the Australian National University, however according to security advice, was excluded from attending the event.
McKenzie said: "I've had many veterans contact me with messages of support, including special forces soldiers, who have read my book and realise it celebrates the brave SAS whistleblowers and witnesses who stood up to Roberts-Smith and who represent the military moral majority.
"I've also been issued multiple threats of death and violence from people who haven't bothered to do any research and who fire themselves up in social media echo chambers. Some of the attacks are aimed at my family, which is revolting."
A Meta spokesperson said keeping people safe on its apps was critical and that it continued to invest in technology to keep abuse off its platforms. The company said it doesn't allow death threats, hate speech or calls for violence on Facebook and Instagram.
None of the examples provided to Meta were deemed breaches of its policies against online abuse, this masthead understands. "We have a dedicated safety website to support journalists in having a safe experience on our platform so they continue their important work," Meta's spokesperson said.
In August, prominent neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell voiced support for Roberts-Smith at a meeting held at Altona RSL in suburban Melbourne. Sewell and others chanted "Heil Ben Roberts-Smith" and "down with Nick McKenzie".
An appeal by Roberts-Smith over the decision is set to be heard in the Federal Court in February.

Hundreds of anti-Voice protesters rally in Sydney, Melbourne
Lisa Visentin, Tom Cowie, Andrew Taylor and Rachel Eddie - September 23, 2023
1/2
Anti-Voice rallies in Sydney and Melbourne today were much smaller in scale than the official Yes campaign marches last weekend.
Several hundred people gathered in Sydney's Hyde Park on Saturday for the rally, with some carrying "Vote No" signs associated with the formal No campaign, despite attempts by the campaign to disassociate themselves from the rally.
They were promoted under the banner of Boikov's previous anti-vax "world freedom rallies", but this time emphasised an anti-Voice position.
Protesters held up signs falsely claiming the Voice referendum was part of a "hidden agenda" by the United Nations to steal land.
However, many appeared motivated by conspiracy and anti-government causes like QAnon, with signs and t-shirts protesting paedophile ring conspiracies, vaccination, as well as 5G and other technologies.
The atmosphere of the Melbourne rally had an air of a movement reuniting, with many attendees still agitated by vaccine mandates and other historical health measures enacted to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The group marched from parliament to Flinders Street Station, where protesters took turns to speak to the crowd and sing songs, including a lyrically reworked version of John Farnham's You're The Voice - which has been used by their opponents in the Yes campaign.
"It's all just like COVID. That's why we're here because we smell the same rat," said Mark Mack, who altered the first verse of Farnham's lyrics to: "They're trying to take the country over."

Inside the conservative forum rallying troops against the Voice
Lisa Visentin - August 19, 2023
1/2
Coalition firebrand senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price was treated to a rock star's welcome as she strode onto the stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Sydney and rallied the crowd to do everything they could to oppose the Voice to parliament referendum.
The Voice was a central theme of this year's CPAC Australia event on Saturday, as the who's who of the No campaign rubbed shoulders with hundreds of conservative voters who paid up to $600 to attend the two-day conference. For those chasing the VIP experience and access to the after party, it was $7000.
Wearing a "Vote No" T-shirt, Price told attendees that while the polling was trending in the direction of a referendum defeat, they should not get complacent.
"We need every single one of you to sign up … to talk to your friends and family and your community. We need every single one of you to be relentless in your opposition to this dangerous, divisive referendum," Price said.
In a speech that criticised the Yes campaign and Labor, Price said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had "surrounded himself with the likes of Thomas Mayo and Teela Reid", Aboriginal activists who served on the government's referendums advisory panels.
The No campaigners have seized on tweets from Mayo and Reid calling for reparations and other demands to suggest there is a hidden agenda behind the Voice.
Price continued: "They don't want the best for Indigenous Australians. They want the rent paid. They want to pay their respects to the elders of the communist party. They want to abolish Australia Day. They want reparations."
There was no mention of the revelations this week that Australian Jewish Association head David Adler, who sits on the advisory board of top No outfit Advance, had repeatedly suggested on X (formerly Twitter) that Indigenous journalist Stan Grant had artificially darkened his skin, and had questioned Independent senator Lidia Thorpe's Aboriginal heritage. Price is the spokeswoman for Advance's anti-Voice campaign Fair Australia.
CPAC Australia organisers had no comment to questions about its sponsor Give Send Go, a Christian crowdfunding website appearing to host fundraising efforts for the legal costs for Australian neo-Nazi leader Thomas Sewell who was convicted last year of assaulting a Nine security guard. The site was also used to fundraise for medical costs for far-right leader Blair Cottrell.
This masthead does not suggest that the No campaign or CPAC Australia share the views of extremists who have used Give Send Go to fundraise.
The conference, held at Sydney's The Star casino, is modelled on the American CPAC that has in recent years become aligned with former US president Donald Trump and his allies in the Republican Party.
The Sydney event was attended by a rollcall of conservative politicians, including former prime minister Tony Abbott, current Coalition MPs Ted O'Brien, Barnaby Joyce, Bridget McKenzie and Alex Antic, who gave speeches or appeared on panels. Media were welcomed to cover the proceedings, but their lanyard passes granting them entry were emblazoned with Trump's "fake news" epithet.

Anti-fascist protesters rally outside neo-Nazi weightlifting event
Marta Pascual Juanola - July 29, 2023
Police stopped anti-fascism protesters from clashing with a group of neo-Nazis holding a "white powerlifting competition" at a boxing gym in Melbourne's west on Saturday.
Dozens of anti-fascism protesters marched to the Legacy Boxing Gym in Sunshine West, walking down Industrial Drive just before 3pm chanting "unite, unite, unite to fight the right", before calling on the white supremacists to face them in the street.
The neo-Nazi group waved at the protesters and performed Sieg Heil salutes from behind a fence, but did not leave the gym - previously linked to far-right groups - while demonstrators were outside.
The protest ended about 3.30pm.
Before the protest began, a small group of balaclava-clad white supremacists walked outside the gym, which was adorned with Nazi symbolism.
Barricades, two police lines and a buffer zone separated both groups. Victoria Police had declared the area around the gym a designated area, allowing officers to search people and vehicles for weapons, and remove anyone from the area they suspected intended to brawl.
White supremacist groups the National Socialist Network and the European Australian Movement were holding a two-day event for members of the "nationalist community" at the gym, which has been connected to some of Victoria's most prominent neo-Nazis.
The event was organised by prominent white supremacy activist Thomas Sewell and was promoted in flyers circulated on encrypted chats as a "white powerlifting competition" and luncheon, with speeches and seminars to be held at a secret location for pre-approved guests only.
"Neo-Nazis are desperately trying to build a following, and they're doing it in the heart of one of Melbourne's most multicultural suburbs," rally organiser Jasmine Duff said.
"Their aim, as always, is to draw in more angry, violent men and build a movement that preaches hate, discrimination, and violence against the rest of Australia."
An investigation by The Age last year uncovered links between Legacy Boxing Gym, well-known Neo-Nazi activists, and a growing community of young men boxing at the gym.
Images posted in encrypted far-right chat groups captured a secret event at the gym last year, which was adorned with swastika and SS flags, as well as other far-right symbolism.
Sewell, who was convicted of assaulting a Channel Nine security guard earlier this year, was photographed at the event posing with a child and dozens of other far-right supporters.
This masthead also uncovered several pictures showing gym director Timothy Holger Lutze and young members of the gym making Nazi salutes.

Abramovich, who was involved in the initial campaign to outlaw the symbol, said the swastika ban was intended as a first step towards addressing the surge in hate-filled ideology.
"There was a very strong and unequivocal indication from the government at that time that they are certainly open and willing to look at banning other Nazi symbols," he said.
Symes has since reached out to Abramovich to set up a meeting to discuss the logistics of expanding the legislation.
"We've been clear there's no place for this hateful ideology in Victoria - public demonstrations and displays such as these do nothing but cause further pain and division. Vilification has no place in our community," a government spokesman said.
"The government will continue to monitor the use of hate symbols and vilification and may consider further legislative reforms at a later stage."
But shadow Attorney-General Michael O'Brien said it would be "hard to believe that existing laws can't deal with this conduct" and have the individuals charged.
"Victoria's equal opportunity, anti-vilification, and public order laws should be able to deal with these attempted provocations from a sad little rabble," he said.
"Many Australians lost their lives in wars fighting against fascism. So it is appalling to see neo-Nazis disrupting public events on Australia Day.
"Acts of intimidation and racial intolerance have no place in our community and will never be tolerated."
Daniel Aghion, president of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria, backed the push to ban the Nazi salute. But he added that any reform needs to extend to the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act.
Aghion, who works as a barrister, said there had only been one prosecution under the act - which deals with instances of religious and racial hatred - since its introduction in 2001.
"It's failing because at the moment what you have to do is you have to prove intent to incite racial hatred against a person," he said. "The trouble is, it's very hard to meet that test."
Josh Roose, an extremism expert and associate professor at Deakin University, said neo-Nazi groups had become more active using the salute following the banning of the swastika.
"They exploit those jurisdictional fault lines and legislative fault lines all the time," he said. "So it's just a matter of cleaning up or mopping up an oversight and extending [the ban]."
Roose said white supremacist groups have other symbols they can use instead, but few have the power and historical significance of the salute - which is used to identify and recruit other members.
Earlier this month, white supremacist Thomas Sewell flashed a Nazi salute while speaking to the media outside Melbourne Magistrates' Court.
Sewell had been handed an 18-month community correction order after being found guilty of assaulting a Channel Nine security guard, who was also racially abused during the attack. Nine is the owner of this masthead.
In another incident earlier this month, 20 white supremacists were photographed doing the gesture on Elwood beach. A child was among those captured doing the salute.

Neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell's vile act outside court after sentence for assault on Nine Network security guard
A neo-Nazi who assaulted a security guard outside Channel 9's Melbourne HQ has learnt his fate in court, before performing a vile act outside the building.
Hugo Timms - January 12, 2023
A Melbourne neo-Nazi who violently assaulted a black security guard performed a Nazi salute outside court moments after avoiding jail time for his "sickening" crime.
Thomas Sewell, who founded the far-right European Australia Movement, repeatedly punched a security guard in the head outside Nine Network's Docklands headquarters in March 2021 after Sewell and a friend, who was filming Sewell, were asked to leave the building.
Sewell, 29 and of Balwyn North, was found guilty of affray and recklessly causing injury in December, with the court rejecting his claim of self-defence.
Sewell and Jacob Hersant were asked to stop filming inside Nine's studio, where they had arrived to confront producers from A Current Affair.
Sewell told the court at an earlier date that the pair had sought the producers after learning the program was due to air a show on his group in which they were labelled as terrorists.
"These people are manipulating public opinion against any white person in this country that are advocates for the white population," Sewell says in the video taken by Mr Hersant.
"Sorry, you can't film in the building," the security guard says after walking over.
When Sewell and Mr Hersant left the building followed by the victim, Mr Hersant began to film the victim and said "Dance monkey, dance."
"Watch yourself bro, I'm not a dance monkey," the victim said, before the pair began to push one another.
At this point Sewell jumped in and landed a flurry of punches, causing the security guard to fall back and hit his head on the pavement.
In December, Magistrate Stephen Ballek referred to the remark preceding the assault as a "disgusting racial taunt" and on Wednesday, said the footage was "sickening to watch".
On Thursday, Sewell told the court that he would be "very happy with a fine" and asked the court not to impose a conviction.
He said he had no prior criminal record, had served as a rifleman in the Australian Defence Force, had worked with disadvantaged children as a charity worker and was currently an apprentice.
Sewell submitted three character references and said he worked full time and financially supported his fiance, who he said was 36 weeks pregnant.
He said his actions "would have been the same" regardless of the "race or culture" of the victim.
The prosecution said Sewell was guilty of an "egregious" and "violent" act, which compelled the court to impose a term of imprisonment.
In sentencing Sewell, His Honour Ballek said he believed there was a racist aspect to the offending, but could not find the assault was racially motivated.
"(The victim) had no time to defend himself," His Honour Ballek said, adding that the security guard was looking at Mr Hersant when Sewell landed six blows to his face which were described as "brutal in force, speed and repetition."
His Honour Ballek said a Community Corrections Order (CCO) was in range considering factors such as Sewell's lack of prior convictions and previous good character.
Sewell, who also received a criminal conviction, was ordered to perform 150 hours of community service.

Neo-Nazi leader Thomas Sewell arrested during counter-terrorism raid on Melbourne home
Chanel Zagon - May 14, 2021
Leader of neo-Nazi group National Socialist Network Thomas Sewell has been arrested during a counter-terrorism raid at his home in Melbourne's southeast.
The 28-year-old was arrested along with a 22-year-old man at a Rowville property early this morning.
Mr Sewell posted "getting raided" on social media just before 5am today, before being escorted out of his home by police on a loudspeaker.
Police in a statement said the arrests follow an alleged armed robbery at the Cathedral Range State Park in Taggerty, the state's north-east, last Saturday.
Investigators allege a group of men smashed a car window and threatened the passengers inside with a knife, before making off with their mobile phones.
No charges have been laid and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
Mr Sewell had been on bail after being charged over a separate alleged violent attack on a security guard at Channel 9's Melbourne headquarters in March.
The man allegedly punched the security guard multiple times outside the television network's headquarters in Docklands.
The alleged assault was captured on video by Mr Sewell's associate and later posted online.
He was charged with affray, recklessly cause injury and unlawful assault over the attack.

How extreme right-wing groups have 'weaponised the internet' in Australia
The alleged attack by a neo-Nazi on a Channel 9 security guard has highlighted a rising threat in Australia as extreme far-right groups spread hate.
Jack Paynter - MARCH 8, 2021
1/3
The brazen and unprovoked alleged attack on a Channel 9 security guard this week has highlighted the "dangerous" and alarming rise of the far-right movement across Australia.
The speed at which neo-Nazi leader Thomas Sewell allegedly escalated to violence sent shivers down the spine of civil rights activists who have been monitoring the behaviour of these individuals over recent years.
Far-right groups - spurred on by the dream of an "Australian Hitler" - have dramatically increased their activities on Australian soil in recent years as new cells pop up.
The Grampians, the National Museum in Canberra, the Story Bridge in Brisbane, Swinburne University and the Brisbane Synagogue are some of the places where these groups have congregated to spread their message of hate, white supremacist and neo-Nazi ideology.
A relatively new group to Australia - the National Socialist Network - claims to have an active footprint in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Perth and a number of regional cities.
The nation's spy agency, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, says increasing numbers of young Australians - some just 14 years old - are being radicalised by both extreme right wing and Islamist groups.
ASIO director-general Mike Burgess told a parliamentary committee last year that right-wing extremists now represented between 30 and 40 per cent of the agency's priority caseload.
"Many of these individuals and groups have seized on COVID-19 as proof of their ideology, and are using the pandemic to amplify their messages of hate online," he said.
"We are seeing young Australians - some just 14 years old - being radicalised."
Anti-Defamation Commission chairman Dvir Abramovich, one of the nation's leading anti-hate campaigners, said far-right extremist groups had "weaponised the internet".
"They are using it now to reach out to young, disaffected white men to try and recruit them," he said.
Dr Abramovich said the government needed to reach some kind of agreement with social media companies and tech giants to stop access to extremist ideologies.
"Today with a click or a swipe you can find horrifying anti-Semitism, neo-Nazi and white supremacist ideology that would make those Nazis proud," he said.
"In the same way you withdraw a deceptive product from the shelf, (social media companies) need to stop these neo-Nazis and white supremacists, they need to withdraw accessibility to those platforms.
"They also need to include more human monitoring, because if they read some of the stuff that is being posted, surely they would realise that they are violating community guidelines."
