Major Trump donors who soured on him after 2020 and Jan. 6 now insist he's their best choice
ABC News1/2Nov. 27, 2023
Donald Trump and his allies are ramping up high-dollar fundraising efforts with less than two months to go until the Iowa caucus begins the 2024 Republican primary, as several major donors show signs of returning to the former president – including those who once called on him to exit the race.
Some observers say the changing view of big financial backers shows a recognition that because Republican voters are sticking with Trump amid his continued controversy and legal troubles, he remains a very real contender for the White House. Trump is battling a slew of unprecedented criminal charges all of which he denies but remains the front-runner in polling.
At the same time, anti-Trump Republican donors have spent millions while scrambling to coalesce behind an alternative candidate to take on the former president and anti-Trump voters remain divided between a handful of challengers.
Charlie Kolean, a GOP strategist who raises money for the Trump campaign, said that "while Trump may have not been some Republicans' first choice for 2024, many are coming back on board because the risk of Joe Biden being a two-term president is just too high." "His lead in the polls is unparalleled and barring any legal action, there is nothing politically that could stop him from becoming the nominee," Kolean said.
Later this week, the former president and his campaign are hosting a fundraiser at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, with ticket prices ranging from $11,600 per person for general attendance to $23,200 for attendance and a photo opportunity.
The following week, real estate executives Steven Witkoff and Howard Lorber are co-hosting a fundraiser for the former president in Hallandale Beach, Florida, for a $23,200-per-person ticket that includes a photo opportunity.
Both Witkoff and Lorber are longtime friends of Trump, and Witkoff testified as the first witness for Trump's defense team in a New York civil trial in which Trump is accused of inflating the values of his properties. Trump has denied any wrongdoing.
But other Republican donors who hadshown reservationsabout Trump after the 2020 election orhad been sitting on the sidelines are now gradually coming out in support of him, too.
Over the last couple of years, a number of the GOP's big backers from financiers like Ken Griffin, Thomas Peterffy and Stephen Schwarzman to cosmetics executive Ronald Lauder and oil and gas mogul Harold Hamm turned their backs on Trump or expressed reservations about him.
Some cited the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and some blamed Trump for Republican disappointments during the 2022 midterms. Others said the party needed a new generation of leaders.
Several bundlers and fundraisers that raised money for Trump had also moved on to raise money for his 2024 rivals.
Home Depot co-founderBernie Marcuswas among the major donors that had declined to weigh in on the 2024 presidential election before he announced asurprise endorsementof Trump in an op-ed published on the website Real Clear Politics in early November, sayingthe "stakes are just too high" and the "choice is simple."....

Billionaire Says He'll Back DeSantis, Suggests One Part Of His Campaign Needs To Change
Tech billionaire Peter Thiel said he would support Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis if he announces his 2024 candidacy for president but said he has to change one part of his campaign.
"I think DeSantis would make a terrific president if he's the Republican nominee. I will strongly support him in 2024," Thiel told Bari Weiss this week during her podcast. "But I do worry that focusing on the woke issue as ground zero is not quite enough."
Thiel, the co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, then claimed that "the focus on identity politics, on the woke religion, is probably a distraction from stagnation. It's a distraction from economics."
As governor, DeSantis has targeted what he has described as the creep of left-wing ideology into civic life and namely stripped Disney of some of its legal protections after the entertainment giant issued a statement opposing a bill that DeSantis supported. The bill, signed into law by the governor, would prevent teachers from the "instruction" or "discussion" of sexual orientation and gender identity with young children.
And on Wednesday, Florida's legislature passed a bill that bans teachers from addressing students with transgender pronouns and barring the funding for diversity programs in colleges.
DeSantis rose to GOP stardom, in part, due to him going after Marxist-inspired critical race theory as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion training.
But Thiel claimed that DeSantis's focus on the subject "can be both important and a distraction at the same time" and stressed that economic issues should be the focus. "It's a distraction from the way in which the younger generation in the U.S. is probably gonna have a hard time getting the same standard of living as their parents," he said.
Despite that, Thiel said that he believes it is "necessary to defeat the woke mind virus," echoing statements made by Twitter CEO Elon Musk, another co-founder of PayPal.
Thiel appeared to be responding to recent reports from Reuters and other news outlets that he would stay out of the 2024 GOP race due to Republicans' focus on cultural topics.
Thiel's comments come as at least two other billionaire donors have soured on DeSantis. For instance, billionaire Thomas Peterffy said in a recent interview with the Financial Times that he was ceasing donations to the governor due to his perceived opinion on abortion and other issues.

Are the
Wheels coming off Ron DeSantis' White House campaign?
Top GOP donor says plans to help finance Florida governor's 2024 run are 'on hold' over six week abortion law and book bans
Billionaire Thomas Peterffy says he is 'keeping his powder dry' on candidates
Florida-based businessman was critical of DeSantis' pandering to the far-right
It comes as the Florida governor faces a resurgent Donald Trump in the polls
A top Republican donor has rowed back on his support of Ron DeSantis due to the Florida governor's stance on abortion and book bans.
Hungarian-born billionaire Thomas Peterffy had previously said he was 'looking forward' to financing the 44-year-old lawmaker's probable White House bid.
But he told the Financial Times on Saturday that he and 'a bunch of friends are holding our powder dry' because of the governor's 'stance on abortion and book banning'.
Earlier this week, DeSantis signed-off a new six week abortion ban in Florida worrying many centrist conservatives who see such draconian rules as vote losers. It now heads to the state's Supreme Court to be rubber-stamped.
'I have put myself on hold,' Peterffy said.
'I am more reluctant to back him. We are waiting to see who among the primary candidates is most likely to be able to win the general, and then put all of our firepower behind them.'

Top 100 of land owners in US, dig time
No. 1 John Malone 2,200,000 acres
Although significant swaths of the acreage belonging to the nation's largest landowner are well off the beaten path - take, for instance, the enormous stands of timberland in the North Maine Woods - tens of thousands of Coloradans enjoy one of Malone's ranches on a daily basis. The Centennial State's 21,000-acre GREENLAND RANCH is a bastion of open space along the Front Range. Set in the rolling hills that form a natural break between Denver and Colorado Springs, it is surrounded by an ever-expanding grid of subdivisions, shopping centers, and office parks along Interstate 25. With the support of Douglas County, Great Outdoors Colorado, and The Conservation Fund, however, the oldest operating cattle ranch along Colorado's Front Range continues its historic mission to this day.

'RARE CIRCUMSTANCES'
Brokerage executives rushed to figure out how to come up with the funds. Robinhood's reaction drew the most public attention, but the firm wasn't alone in limiting trading of stocks such as GameStop and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc.
In fact, Charles Schwab Corp.'s TD Ameritrade curbed transactions in both of those companies on Wednesday. Interactive Brokers Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley's ETrade took similar action Thursday.
Thomas Peterffy, the billionaire chairman of Interactive Brokers, told Bloomberg TV the restrictions were prompted by concerns "about the integrity of the marketplace and the system."
ETrade stressed that its measures were a highly unusual. "We take actions like this seriously, and only initiate them in rare circumstances," said spokesman Thayer Fox, adding that he expected normal trading to resume Friday.
Robinhood said after markets closed that it plans to allow "limited buys" to resume in affected securities. It also tried to assuage customer concerns with an email that evening: "This was a temporary decision made to best continue serving you, and was not an easy one to make."
CREDIT LINES
The firm has tapped at least several hundred million dollars from its bank credit lines, a person with knowledge of the situation said. The company's lenders include JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc., according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Representatives for Robinhood and those banks declined to comment.
Robinhood's capital remains "strong," Tenev said, underscoring that the restrictions helped protect both the brokerage and its clients.
One question is whether frustrated customers will forgive what some see as a betrayal in their campaign against Wall Street's financial elite.
Douglas Bray, a software developer from Connecticut who's been using Robinhood for about five years, said he plans to withdraw about $100,000 after the trading restrictions.
"I'm disappointed I could not keep my money in GME like any institutional investor could," said Bray, 32, referring to GameStop's ticker. "Hedge funds are on the brink of a massive short squeeze and appear to be calling in all the cavalry. So brokers are now 'protecting' customers as a facade so that they can appease their institutional backers. The entire community is outraged."
Other brokerages may hope to capitalize on the moment.
Webull, which has expanded during the pandemic, saw new accounts soar 16-fold over the seven-day average, according to CEO Anthony Denier. Its app ranked as the second most popular free iPhone app in the U.S. on Thursday, up from No. 60 a day earlier, according to SensorTower, which gathers data on mobile apps. (Robinhood was still No. 1.)
Denier didn't want to comment on the reason for the jump. Earlier Thursday, Webull also restricted trading on shares including GameStop and AMC, but then reversed its decision.
Robinhood has been expected for months to hold an initial public offering this year. Late Thursday, people with knowledge of those preparations said the plan is to press ahead sometime in the first half of 2021, despite the controversy and draw-down on credit lines.
But it remains to be seen what the lasting impact is from Robinhood's association with the retail trading revolt - and now any strains in the firm's relationship with the rebels behind it.
"The restrictions in trading today only worsened the situation," Douglas Boneparth, who competes with Robinhood for customers as president of the wealth management firm Bona Fide Wealth, said Thursday. "Many will ignore the fact that Robinhood faced increased costs that created an unsustainable business environment."

Catholic Church's Recognition Of US Legitimate Role In Intercepting Undocumented Migrants: House Democrats Propose SOROS OPEN BORDERS In 2019
Even as "leftist" and/or conservative "poison pill" sites perpetuate the deception that The Church supports Soros Open Borders which is the mantra of Democrats ~ The Church stands firm in recognizing the right of the sovereign to control and protect its borders.
House Democrats propose OPEN BORDERS in 2019 homeland security budget
Leftists Democrats continue to insist that providing proper funding for a border wall between the United States and Mexico would somehow be "wasteful" and "immoral," they're simultaneously pushing for open borders - which costs the U.S. around $155 billion annually, or 31 times the cost of the wall - as part of the 2019 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) budget. The Other American Hungarian Billionaire Thomas Peterffy: Antidote To George Soros!
According to new reports, the draft budget being proposed by House Democrats offers a measly $1.75 billion to President Trump for "extra border spending," while provisioning absolutely nothing for the border wall. However, these same House Democrats made sure to provision for hundreds of millions of dollars in funding in their proposal to help more "migrants" illegally cross the border, as well as find jobs once they are in the U.S.
"The Democrats want to limit the government's ability to keep people out of the country," stated Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies, about the ridiculous proposal. "Enforcement would be weakened and people abroad would very quickly learn of that, and then illegal immigration would dramatically increase, especially of people with children."
