Google 'aggressively pursuing' Pentagon's cloud-computing contract set to replace scrapped 'JEDI' project - media
Google's parent company Alphabet has reportedly been courting the Pentagon in the hopes to win a major cloud-computing contract known as the "Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability." It is the successor of the axed 'war cloud' project.
The tech behemoth has been "aggressively pursuing" the contract, New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing "four people familiar with the matter." Google sees the issue as a priority, designating it a "code yellow" emergency in internal documents, the report claims.
Google has reportedly been working hard behind the scenes to secure the contract, diverting a considerable chunk of its resources and pulling engineers from other projects, to prepare a viable proposal for the Pentagon, according to the Times.
Chief executive officer of Google Cloud Thomas Kurian reportedly met with the Air Force Chief of Staff General Charles Q. Brown on Tuesday to pitch the firm's cloud computing technologies. While it is unclear if the meeting has resulted in any agreement between the parties, the Times reported that Google was hoping to "make the case" for the tech giant's services.
The Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability, which is part of Pentagon's multi-billion modernization initiative, is a successor of the $10 billion Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) cloud contract, which never materialized due to protracted legal disputes.
Amazon expected to win the JEDI contract, but the Pentagon awarded it to Microsoft in 2019 instead. The company's CEO Jeff Bezos immediately challenged the decision, arguing that it was made due to "personal animus" towards him by then-president Donald Trump. Following almost two years of legal wrangling, the Pentagon ultimately pulled the plug on the multi-billion dollar project in July. Unlike JEDI, the JWCC is set to involve "multiple" vendors.
Although the Pentagon initially suggested that only Amazon and Microsoft were suited for the contract, officials did not rule out that other bidders may come into the equation after they determine that they can meet the specific requirements. The Pentagon said it completed the market research last month, and the contracts are set to be awarded by April 2022.
Unveiling the initiative back in July, the Department of Defense said that the JWCC is set to boost "such warfighter capabilities as joint all domain command" and "artificial intelligence and data acceleration initiative."

Google Buys Israeli Cloud Storage Company Elastifile
A source said Google has agreed to pay approximately $200 million
Google has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Israel-based cloud storage company Elastifile Ltd., Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced in a blog post Tuesday. The acquisition, subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to be completed this year, Kurian said. Ultimately, Elastifile is set to join Google Cloud.
The companies did not provide financial details but one person familiar with the matter who spoke to Calcalist on condition of anonymity said the deal is valued at approximately $200 million.
Founded in 2013 and headquartered in central Israel and in Santa Clara, California, Elastifile develops data fabric storage technology for large data centers. The company has raised $74 million in equity to date, from backers including Samsung, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Battery Ventures, Dell Technologies Capital, Western Digital, and Cisco Investments, according to Pitchbook data.
The company was founded by veteran Israeli entrepreneurs, among them CEO Amir Aharoni, who founded Nasdaq-listed real estate company Optibase Ltd. and adtech company Mobixell Networks, Inc.; Chief Technology Officer Shahar Frank, who co-founded XtremIO, acquired by EMC Corporation for $430 million in 2012; and Roni Luxenburg, who served in an executive role in software company Red Hat, bought by International Business Machines for $34 billion in 2018.

Google to invest $1 bln in CME Group, agrees cloud computing deal
Alphabet Inc.'s Google has invested $1 billion in futures-exchange giant CME Group Inc. and struck a deal to move the company's core trading systems to the cloud.
Under the deal, the technology giant's Google Cloud unit would eventually power markets that handle trillions of dollars in trades each day. The companies said Thursday that their 10-year partnership would allow CME to bring on new users faster, streamline operations and develop new tools with Google technology, such as artificial-intelligence software for monitoring market risks. Cloud providers such as Amazon Inc., Google and Microsoft Corp. have been jockeying for position in the financial-services sector, which has been slower to adopt cloud computing than other industries. The reluctance stems in part from the tight regulatory oversight of banks and exchanges, as well as concerns over breaches of sensitive client data.
The CME deal gives Google Cloud a prize client in the sector. With a market capitalization of $79.2 billion, CME is the world's most valuable exchange operator, a title it recently reclaimed from Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing Ltd. The Chicago-based company runs an array of markets, from crude oil to gold to stock-market futures. Google Cloud is the fourth-largest cloud provider, taking 6.1% of global cloud-infrastructure revenues last year, according to research firm Gartner Inc. The biggest player is Amazon, whose market share last year was more than 40%, followed by Microsoft and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. , Gartner data shows.
Alongside the cloud deal, Google made a $1 billion equity investment in nonvoting convertible preferred CME Group stock, the companies said. In an interview, Google Cloud Chief Executive Thomas Kurian called the investment "a reflection of our commitment to the transformation of the financial system, not just to one company's infrastructure."
Moving CME's trading systems to the cloud will pose technical challenges beyond those of a typical corporate cloud project. Exchanges like CME handle a vast number of price quotes and trades, many submitted by high-speed trading firms accustomed to having the exchanges' systems process orders in millionths of a second. And if an exchange goes down, it isn't just an inconvenience, but can have ripple effects throughout the financial markets.
Despite such difficulties, exchanges have begun to dip their toes into cloud technology. Nasdaq Inc. said last year that it planned to move its markets to the cloud over the next decade. The New York-based company hasn't yet said which tech provider it will use.
Amazon has also been eyeing the exchange business. The tech giant's cloud-computing arm, Amazon Web Services, completed a pilot project last year with Singapore Exchange Ltd. and European market operator Aquis Exchange PLC to prove it was possible to run an exchange capable of handling ultrafast, high-volume trading on AWS technology.
CME will begin moving its technology infrastructure to Google Cloud next year, the companies said. Initially, the companies plan to focus on CME's data and clearing services, which aren't as sensitive to speed as the core trading systems. Clearing is the behind-the-scenes process of settling transactions and moving money between market participants after trades. Eventually, the plan calls for moving all of CME's markets onto the cloud.
"I wanted to be under a technology umbrella that has the bandwidth to allow me to grow my business," CME Chairman and Chief Executive Terrence Duffy said in an interview. "I'm good at transactional businesses, myself and my team. Google is really good at technology. I think it's a marriage made in heaven."
