Trump coasts in Iowa, as GOP debate turns into a 'dumpster fire'
Just about everything went right for Donald Trump on Wednesday.
First Chris Christie trashed Nikki Haley on an open mic as he dropped out of the presidential primary. Then Haley and Ron DeSantis spent the night bloodying each other on a debate stage in Iowa.
And as the Republican presidential campaign turned fully toward the first caucus state on Wednesday, it could hardly have gone better for the frontrunner, Donald Trump.
As he basked in the adulation of a friendly audience at a Fox News town hall, signing hats and shaking hands, two miles to the west, the former U.N. ambassador and Florida governor bludgeoned each other in a debate that became so personal and vitriolic they once again left Trump largely unscathed.
"Pretty much a dumpster fire," quipped Doug Gross, a Republican operative who was chief of staff to former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad. "The Republicans are really savaging each other. I don't think it's helping either one of them."
Fresh off a court appearance, Trump made the most of the time back in Fox News' warm embrace. He cleaned up comments he made in December about being a "dictator" for one day, saying, "I am not going to be a dictator." He said he has a vice presidential pick in mind. And his campaign was already predicting a big victory: "A win is a win," a top Trump adviser, Chris LaCivita, told reporters after the town hall. "But anything over 12 [points] I think is a great night." …

Nikki Haley launches new coalition aimed at supporting Iowa's farmers, rural communities

Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley has launched a new coalition aimed at lifting Iowa's rural communities and focusing on issues facing farmers and families.
The Farmers for Nikki Coalition is led by several Iowans who have all endorsed Haley:
Ray Gaesser, a longtime Corning farmer who previously served as president of both the American Soybean Association and the Iowa Soybean Association.
Kelly Nieuwenhuis, former president of Siouxland Energy Cooperative, a Sioux Center-based ethanol plant. The Primghar corn and soybean farmer is also part owner of a hog-finishing operation and was once president of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board.
Mary Boote, a chief executive officer of the Global Farmer Network and a former agriculture adviser to former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad.
State Rep. Austin Harris, a Moulton native who works on his family's cattle farm. He was also deputy chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks.
Chris Wehrman, former CEO of the National Corn Growers Association.
In the lead-up to the 2020 election, all eyes are on Iowa. Get updates of all things Iowa politics delivered to your inbox.
Gaesser, the coalition's chairman, said in a statement he believes the nation's next president must be strong - someone who can "lead with balance" and "influence and guide with our American values, domestically and abroad." And, that's Haley, he said, touting her experience as a former governor of South Carolina and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
He and Haley's Iowa Political Director Billy Mackey also pointed to her personal life.
Haley on the campaign trail has shared fond memories of growing up in rural South Carolina - a town that has around 2,500 people and two stoplights. She has often joked: "You couldn't think about doing something wrong without somebody telling your mom."
Haley has publicly spoken about her support for Iowa farmers and renewable energy and warned against Chinese entities taking over U.S. farmland. She's told voters that the nation's largest pork producer, Smithfield Foods, has been owned by a Chinese firm for a decade. Headquartered in Virginia, Smithfield Foods has packing facilities around the country, including in Iowa.
"Like many Iowans, Nikki grew up in a small, rural town where faith, family, and farming were always top of mind. Here in Iowa, we're seeing Communist China infiltrate our agriculture industries, and no one is better suited to combat that threat than Nikki Haley," Mackey said in a statement. "She knows that Iowa farmers feed and fuel the world and will always have their backs."
In September, Haley held three events, including a town hall and roundtable event with local agriculture leaders, in rural Grand Mound.
During the town hall event, which drew in a 300-plus audience, she told hundreds of potential caucusgoers: "Don't forget food security is national security."
Haley's campaign continues to bolster support as her candidacy rises in the polls, emerging as one of two top alternatives to former President Donald Trump. Haley in recent weeks has been a target for both Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Haley, whose campaign also recently opened its first headquarters in Clive and beefed up staff, is also one of five candidates who qualified for Wednesday's third Republican presidential debate in Miami.
An October Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom Iowa Poll showed 16% of Iowa's Republican caucusgoers named Haley as their first choice for president - tying DeSantis, who has long held second place behind Trump.
Trump still remains the dominant challenger in the shrinking pool of GOP candidates, garnering the support of 43% of Iowa Republican caucusgoers, according to the poll.

Merrick Brian Garland (born November 13, 1952) is an American lawyer and jurist who is the 86th and current United States attorney general.
Garland was raised in Conservative Judaism; the family name had been changed from Garfinkel several generations earlier. His grandparents left the Pale of Settlement in the western Russian Empire in the early 20th century, fleeing antisemitic pogroms in what is now Ukraine and Poland, and seeking a better life for their children in the United States.[7][8] Two of his grandmother's siblings were later murdered in the Holocaust.[9] He is a second cousin of Republican six-term Iowa Governor and former Ambassador to China Terry Branstad.

Former President Donald Trump won't be among the GOP presidential candidates gathering in Des Moines Friday for the Family Leadership summit, which is expected to attract over 2,000 Iowa GOP voters.
Bob Vander Plaats, the president and CEO of the Family Leader, told CBS News political correspondent Caitlin Huey-Burns that Trump is "making a mistake" by skipping the group's annual conference.
"He is choosing not to show up, and I don't think it is just a smart idea on his part," Vander Plaats said.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds plans to sign the state's new six-week abortion ban into law at the summit Friday. Trump is also feuding with her because Reynolds won't endorse him before the Iowa caucuses. She has said she won't endorse anyone during the primaries.
Trump recently lashed out at Reynolds on social media, posting that he "opened up the governor position for Kim Reynolds and when she fell behind I endorsed her....now she wants to remain neutral." In addition to endorsing her, Trump appears to be claiming credit for enabling her to win the governor's race because he appointed her predecessor, former Gov. Terry Branstad, to be ambassador to China during his administration.

Xi Jinping's 'Old Friends' from Iowa Get a Dinner Invitation
Jennifer Jacobs
Sat, November 11, 2023 at 12:25 PM CST?4 min read
(Bloomberg) – A group of Chinese President Xi Jinping's "old friends" from Iowa have been invited to a dinner he will attend in California next week - 38 years after they welcomed the then-unknown party official for a hog roast, farm tours and a Mississippi River boat ride as they showed him how capitalists do agriculture.
"This has been a heck of a journey - we can't figure it out. We don't even know why he likes us!" said Sarah Lande, an 85-year-old Muscatine resident who has maintained connections with Xi since he made his first visit to the US as the leader of a food processing delegation from China's Hebei Province in 1985.
"But we're eager to meet with him, too. We're regular, everyday people," Lande added.
Xi's warm and enduring bond with the Midwesterners he first encountered nearly four decades ago stands in contrast with the suspicions and acrimony that have characterized relations between the two largest economies over the last few years.
Both Xi and President Joe Biden, who plan to meet Wednesday during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco, have taken recent diplomatic steps to ease the strains.
The Iowans' invitations for the reception and dinner, on the sidelines of APEC, came through the the National Committee on US-China Relations and the US-China Business Council, in coordination with China's embassy, Lande said.
The Iowans haven't been told if they'll get a private audience with Xi, who was 31 when they met him.
Terry Branstad, a former Iowa governor and US ambassador to China, has also been invited, according to an aide.

Let me break it down from anon's perspective
Terry Branstad is a globalist and self-declared friend of Xi. He was also Governor of Iowa most of my life. He currently controls the Iowa GOP apparatus and is the real power behind Grassley, Earnst and current Gov Reynolds.
Branstad was the American Ambassador to the CCP at the time of the Wuhan lab leak. He returned to Iowa without a peep in 2022 and immediately became the grand poobah of The World Food Prize.
His son Eric is a drunken vehicular murderer who got off with a license suspension.

A new business lobby backed by Republican heavyweights is looking to build clout with GOP leaders amid high-profile splits between the party's policymakers and key segments of corporate America, Axios has learned.
Why it matters: The American Free Enterprise Chamber of Commerce is positioning itself as an alternative to groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The new group's backers complain the Chamber has lurched left from its onetime post at the vanguard of a Republican-aligned political apparatus.
The chairman of the AmFree chamber, as it's known internally, is Terry Branstad - the former Republican governor of Iowa and President Trump's ambassador to China.
Its CEO is Gentry Collins, a former political director of the Republican National Committee.
The AmFree Chamber will provide an avenue for American businesses looking to influence Republicans, who appear poised to retake congressional majorities next year.
What's happening: The new chamber's formation comes as corporate America grapples with increasing pressure to engage on issues such as voting rights, racial justice and abortion - and the potential political fallout from doing so.
"I hope to make the case to our policymakers at all levels that we must move away from the trend towards socialism and back to a pro-business, pro-growth posture," Branstad told business leaders during a conference call last Thursday, which Axios also attended.
In a memo pitching the group to potential members, a copy of which was obtained by Axios, the AmFree Chamber offers "tools for American businesses to maintain access to the marketplace in the face of 'woke capital' and 'cancel-culture' threats," among other benefits.
The big picture: A high-profile split last year between the U.S. Chamber and congressional Republicans - including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the potential next Speaker - provides a lane for a group that can effectively wield influence among GOP leaders, say sources close to the project.
"The void that is filled is [the AmFree Chamber] isn't dead to Hill Republicans who will likely control the floor of both House and Senate" next year, one Republican lobbyist told Axios.
A senior House leadership aide told Axios the U.S. Chamber has "become more interested in electing so-called pro-business Democrats who vote for their party's decidedly anti-business, woke agenda."
"It's no surprise Governor Branstad and others have recognized this and are stepping in to fill this void," the aide said.
What they're saying: "[W]e warmly welcome anyone who joins our agenda, advocating for businesses and their workers. We need the pro-business voices to be heard loud and clear," a U.S. Chamber spokesperson told Axios.
The group "has worked with our network of state and local chambers across the country to secure important legislation, benefiting businesses of all sizes and our country as a whole," the spokesperson said, citing its work on trade, inflation, infrastructure and "the threat of government overreach."
"To find viable solutions, we need to collaborate and work with all stakeholders."
Between the lines: Multiple sources close to the new Branstad group used the term "woke" to describe the U.S. Chamber, a social-justice buzzword that's been relegated largely to the domain of conservative critics.
One source pointed to the group's engagement on ESG, or environmental, social and corporate governance business practices, and positions on tech sector regulation at odds with Republican critics of the industry.
Another brought up its preservation of scaffolding on its Lafayette Square headquarters covered by graffiti and artwork during 2020's Black Lives Matter protests.
While candidates still regularly tout the endorsements from the chamber and its state affiliates, it's become a political epithet in some high-profile Republican primary contests.
How we got here: The last time a Democratic president faced his first midterm election, the Chamber was a Republican-aligned powerhouse.
At this point in the 2010 cycle, it had reported more than $30 million in independent political spending, according to OpenSecrets data.
So far this cycle, it's reported a little more than $200,000, though the group says that's largely due to a shift toward political tactics such as digital ads that don't require reports to the Federal Election Commission.
It's also spending huge sums on its Washington lobbying operation and has maintained a steady pace of contributions to federal political candidates.
It's some of those past contributions - to Democrats in competitive races last cycle - that helped drive a wedge between the group and key Republican leaders such as McCarthy.

It's Called TREASON!
Peter Schweizer's new book exposes 20 'red-handed' Republicans who allegedly sold out to China
Political writer Peter Schweizer's latest book reportedly accuses 20 current and former GOP members of having essentially sold out to China.
Correction: This has been corrected to reflect that McConnell's ties to China stem from his father-in-law, not his stepfather.
Political writer Peter Schweizer's latest book reportedly accuses 20 current and former GOP members of having essentially sold out to China.
Released late last month, "Red-Handed: How American Elites Get Rich Helping China Win" has attracted attention thus far mainly for its bombshells about President Joe Biden and his extremely wealthy family.
But also contained within the book is a treasure trove of bombshells about elected Republicans, ranging from current Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell to former President George H.W. Bush.
Regarding McConnell, Schweizer reportedly writes that the Senate leader and his wife both "enjoy some of the deepest and most abiding ties to Beijing- linked entities of anyone in Washington, D.C."
Regarding H.W. Bush, though his ties reportedly began before he even became vice president to Ronald Reagan, they "flourished" once he took office in 1989.
"Prescott Bush, Bush Sr.'s brother, met with Chinese officials in Beijing in February 1989 just days before the president was set for an official visit. Prescott's meeting helped close the deal to build a golf club in Shanghai, China for non-Chinese business executives when they were visiting the country," according to Breitbart.
"Prescott also met with Chinese officials, on that same trip, to push for the creation of a communications network across China. Prescott was trying to secure the deal on behalf of New York-based Asset Management International Financing and Settlement Ltd. which had been paying him $250,000 a year."
Months later, "Bush Sr. lifted U.S. restrictions on exporting satellite technologies to China - a boon for Prescott's client, Asset Management."
Prescott also reportedly launched the U.S.-China Chamber of Commerce, "which exists to this day and has sought to further tether the U.S. economy to China."
Schweizer's book also lists connections between China and
former House Speaker John Boehner,
former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott,
former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour,
former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad,
former Sens. David Vitter, Normal Coleman, William Cohen, Tim Hutchinson,
former Reps. Rodney Frelinghuysen, Ed Royce, Jeff Dehman, Lee Terry, Jack Kingston, Cliff Stearns, Charles Boustany, Connie Mack IV, Jon Christensen.

Soon, neither the US nor China will have ambassadors in each other's capitals. Will it make a difference?
China's longest-serving ambassador to the United States, Cui Tiankai, has announced he is standing down after eight years, adding another layer of uncertainty in the relationship between the two great powers.
Cui, 68, whose time in Washington spanned the presidencies of Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, has been witness to a profound shift in US-China relations. During his tenure, Beijing has grown increasingly confident and assertive, demanding that it is treated as an equal. Washington, on the other hand, has become wary of China's rise, seeing it as a strategic rival and potential threat to the US-led world order.
"Relations between China and the US are at a critical crossroads, with the US engaging in a new round of restructuring in its government policy towards China, and it is facing a choice between cooperation and confrontation," Cui wrote in a farewell letter published on the embassy's website Tuesday.
And until his yet-to-be-announced successor arrives, neither Beijing nor Washington will have a top envoy in each other's capital.
The former US ambassador to China, Terry Branstad, left Beijing last year before the November election. Nicholas Burns, a former diplomat, is a top contender to fill the role, but the Biden administration has yet to make a formal announcement.
The unusual diplomatic vacuum is just the latest sign of the ongoing breakdown in formal relations in what is considered the world's most important bilateral relationship.
*
Under the Trump administration, tensions between the US and China flared across a range of fronts, from trade to technology, geopolitics and national defense.
And with Biden casting China as an authoritarian rival to Western democracy, while seeking to form an alliance to counter Beijing, tensions are likely to further escalate.
Cui, who has stayed on well past the traditional retirement age of 65, is widely seen as a rare stabilizing element in this volatile mix. He is typical of China's old-school diplomats, adept at expressing a firm stance in a moderate manner and measured tone. And that sets him apart from Beijing's younger and growing cohort of "wolf warrior" diplomats, known for their aggressive defense of China and hostile public attacks of its critics.
In March last year, Cui famously denounced the conspiracy theory promoted by his colleague Zhao Lijian a foreign ministry spokesperson and the face of China's "wolf warrior" diplomacy that the coronavirus originated from a US military lab. "How can we believe all these crazy things?" he said in an interview with "Axios on HBO."
Cui is widely tipped to be succeeded by Qin Gang, a career diplomat who currently serves as a deputy foreign minister responsible for overseeing European affairs. Qin is seen as a trusted aide of President Xi Jinping, having accompanied the Chinese leader on many overseas trips as his chief protocol officer.
But unlike Cui, Qin has never been an ambassador and has no direct experience with the US.
Before Cui was dispatched to Washington in 2013, he already had close dealings with the Obama administration during his four-year stint as the foreign vice-minister in charge of the Americas and Oceania.
But for Qin, it is a much more difficult time to build bridges in Washington, which has taken a bipartisan hardline stance toward China.
Under increasingly strained relations, there is very little room for the Chinese ambassador to maneuver, as all important policies and decisions will be made in Beijing. But Qin can still make a difference by not further damaging relations with inflammatory remarks, like some of China's "wolf warrior" diplomats have done in other countries.

Mass eyerolls as Biden campaign 'taps' trigger-happy former rival Buttigieg as China ambassador
Former South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg is reportedly being considered for the role of US ambassador to China by the presumed Democratic president-elect Joe Biden, leading many to question the wisdom of the pick.
Buttigieg is under consideration to represent the US in China by the potentially incoming cabinet, according to a Wednesday report from Axios. The position has been vacant since October, when the most recent ambassador, Terry Branstad, resigned, and the relationship between the two countries has deteriorated significantly under the Donald Trump administration - all reasons to hire a qualified, reliable candidate with significant foreign policy experience.
The former South Bend mayor definitely isn't that candidate, many on social media have argued, groaning at the idea of the "scary AF" young politician taking on such an important role. "Unbelievable...we're in a new Cold War with China and this wet mayonnaise blanket gets appointed ambassador," one critic commented.
damn imagine just having no political nuance past "trump bad" pete buttigieg is an objectively shitty dude with a history of being shitty, he's also 0% qualified for this positionoh yeah, he also never served in combat, despite his many pictures posing with guns

Is Pete Buttigieg being considered as US Ambassador to China for any reason other than as a reward for attacking Bernie/democratic socialism during the primaries, and to be set up for a higher position (VP) for which is is totally unqualified? pic.twitter.com/uCAD5fm0kv
- Joseph Saltarelli (@JoeJSaltarelli) December 9, 2020
Several others commented on his lack of qualifications, noting he didn't speak Mandarin and had no foreign policy experience.
Shouldn't the U.S. ambassador to China be able to speak Mandarin? Does China appoint ambassadors to the U.S. who don't speak English? I kind of doubt it.
- chalkerjas (@chalkerjas) December 9, 2020
So we should absolutely have a failed mayor of a mid-sized town with zero experience in the role.
- 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐌𝐢𝐚𝐖𝐚𝐲 🛹 (@WinsomeNomad) December 9, 2020
Others went further, claiming Buttigieg was "compromised by China."
Our next Manchurian candidate.
- Not PGA material. (@GMRathbun) December 9, 2020
Some complained that appointing Buttigieg, whose tenure as mayor was marked by racial animus, rampant gentrification, and rising poverty, to such a significant role was rewarding failure.
Please no. Stop encouraging him to fail upward.

In a press briefing on Sunday, Trump criticized the Reuters story as "100 percent wrong." Yet the CDC acknowledged the position had been cut. The agency said the decision was made because of China's "excellent technical capability," and said the elimination of that post did not hamper the U.S. effort to respond to the coronavirus outbreak.
The CDC staffing documents newly reviewed by Reuters show a sharp decline in the overall number of employees at the agency in Beijing, with 33 out of 47 positions lost.
The documents show the breakdown between American and Chinese staffers. The number of so-called American "assignees" declined to three positions from eight at the outset of the administration. Positions lost included medical epidemiologists and other experts in infectious diseases.
The biggest cuts were to positions filled by Chinese employees on the U.S. payroll, down to around 10 from 40 over the same period. Many of those local hires included medical and disease experts, according to the people who spoke with Reuters.
"Local staffers stayed even longer at the CDC and had a real depth of knowledge," one of the people said. "There's a loss of deep expertise and institutional knowledge."
The CDC told Reuters the three Americans currently on staff in China are a country director, an influenza expert and an information technology expert. A temporary deputy director arrived recently, and that job will be filled permanently, the agency said in a statement. In addition, two Chinese staffers continue to work on specific public health areas, including the training program, according to the statement.
The shuttered USAID and NSF offices in China also had a role in building scientific relationships and combating global disease, according to the four people familiar with the situation.
USAID's Beijing office, which was staffed by a senior U.S. officer and two Chinese employees, was working on initiatives including multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and malaria, the people said. The office closed in 2019.
The NSF office was once led by Nancy Sung, a respected American scientist who was a key link between the U.S. and Chinese scientific communities, according to the U.S. government official who spoke with Reuters. The office also employed two local staffers.
"She had far more contacts than most of us," said the official, who had been in China at the time and was familiar with her role. "She could have helped maintain vital channels of communication between the two countries which to this day is greatly curtailed."
Sung, who is now with the NSF in the United States, declined to comment about the closure of her office in 2018 and referred questions to the agency's public affairs office.
'WITHOUT BENEFIT TO THE U.S.'
The changes came amid escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing. Trump has long complained that China has stolen millions of American jobs and intellectual property, charges the Chinese government has rejected as baseless. The countries have slapped billions in tariffs on each other's goods. Now their leaders are battling to control the narrative over the pandemic. Trump has called it the "Chinese virus" to keep the focus on China's role in unleashing the pandemic. China, meanwhile, is trying to assert global leadership by providing aid to Italy and other hard-hit countries.
Over the last two years, the White House has pushed U.S. agencies with a presence in China to de-fund programs there along with the positions to manage them, according to the U.S. official who spoke to Reuters.
The source said Terry Branstad, the U.S. ambassador to China and a former Republican governor of Iowa, tried to remind the White House of the importance of the U.S. presence in China but was told to "get with the program" by an administration official.
"The White House saw the relationship as one-sided and without benefit to the U.S.," the source said.
A State Department spokesman said in a statement that the U.S. Embassy in China is "one of our largest, reflecting the many areas of bilateral engagement."

US ambassador to China to quit in move to Trump campaign
WASHINGTON/BEIJING (Reuters) – U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad will step down to work on President Donald Trump's re-election campaign, a U.S. official familiar with the matter said on Monday, departing Beijing at a time when the ties between the world's top two economies are at their worst in decades.
Branstad, previously the longest-serving governor of Iowa, a state in the U.S. Farm Belt which helped Trump get elected in 2016, will leave China in early October, the U.S. embassy said in a statement.Sources familiar with the matter cite Branstad's popularity in Iowa, having served there as governor for over two decades, as an asset to Trump. "I suspect the real answer, as usual, is the simplest one: the Trump campaign needs help shoring up Iowa, including making the case to farmers that the President's trade policy has helped them - not an easy sell," said Matthew Goodman, a trade expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Trump has tested the loyalty of his rural base in Iowa through his trade wars with China and his handling of corn-based ethanol mandates, a core economy for the state. On Saturday, Trump hinted that Branstad might be joining the campaign. In a video posted on Twitter by Iowa senator Joni Ernst, Trump said Branstad would be coming home from China "because he wants to campaign."
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a tweet thanked Branstad for his service since being confirmed in May 2017 and said he contributed to rebalancing U.S.-China relations so that it is "results-oriented, reciprocal, and fair." U.S-China relations have been increasingly fraught over multiple issues including U.S. objection to China's new security law in Hong Kong to Beijing's handling of the novel coronavirus pandemic and its territorial ambitions in the South China Sea. Branstad's departure leaves the U.S. mission in Beijing without a confirmed ambassador at such a diplomatically critical time and that gap could last for months even if Trump is re-elected on Nov. 3. The Senate is only scheduled to be in session for about two more weeks before Election Day.
The Chinese foreign ministry has in the past described Branstad, who was instrumental in a so-called Phase One trade deal with China, as an "old friend of the Chinese people". He first forged ties with President Xi Jinping several decades ago when Xi visited Iowa.

Extreme Leftism and Growing Social Unrest
Who stands to lose from a successful trade agreement between China and the United States? In past decades, CCP elites leveraged the uneven trade system and loopholes in the state-heavy Chinese economy to amass huge fortunes. Among the most corrupt is Zeng Qinghong's family. His son, Zeng Wei, reportedly acquired Lu Neng Group, the biggest enterprise in Shandong Province, for just 3.7 billion yuan (about $536.7 million), although the energy firm is valued at 73.8 billion yuan.
Ahead of this year's Beidaihe meetings-the informal annual gatherings of CCP leaders and retired leaders at a seaside resort a few hours' drive from Beijing-speculation has been circulating that regime elites may attempt to sideline Xi or depose him in a coup.
The biggest targets of Xi's leadership, of course, are Jiang, Zeng, and their factional associates. At the peak of the anti-corruption campaign, two open letters circulated on the Chinese-language internet that demanded Xi's resignation. One included three threats to the safety of Xi and his family.
Since March 2018, Chinese state media have run a campaign of extreme left-wing propaganda, boasting of China's "confidence" in the trade war and pushing a bombastic ultranationalist narrative to pump up anti-U.S. sentiment in Chinese society. As the Communist Party used this hardline ideological approach to counter a national crisis, conflicts and tensions built up during the era of the Jiang faction's political dominance came to a head.
The deterioration of the Chinese economy in recent years has caused a variety of disturbances to inflame social anger. Some examples include fake vaccines, the crash of peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms, the fall of China top actress Fan Bingbing for tax evasion, the sex scandal involving the head of the CCP-controlled Buddhist Association, or the Jiangxi provincial government's heavy-handed exhumation of bodies to enforce cremation-only laws.
Last September, the CCP mouthpiece China Daily bought a four-page supplement in the Des Moines Register in Iowa to try to defame Trump. A full-page article, titled "Dispute: Fruit of a President's Folly," slammed the Trump administration for the trade war and encouraged local farmers to not vote for Trump and the Republicans during the midterm elections.
Iowa was the destination of Xi's first official visit to the United States in 1985. In 2012, shortly after coming to office, Xi made another trip to Iowa while in the United States. Trump is aware of Xi's connections with the state, which is one of the reasons why he chose former Iowa state Governor Terry Branstad as the U.S. ambassador to China. That China Daily picked Iowa to run its insert more or less shows that someone intended the move to embarrass Xi.

Gov. Kate Brown to discuss renewable energy, cleantech with Chinese President Xi Jinping today
Sep 22, 2015
Chinese President Xi Jinping touches down in Seattle this morning to begin a weeklong stay in the U.S.
First up on his agenda? A meeting with a slew of state governors, including Oregon's Kate Brown, to discuss renewable energy, energy efficiency, cleantech and smart grid collaboration.
The visit comes a year after Xi and President Obama laid plans for China and the U.S. to work together to develop clean energy sources and fight climate change.
Xi will meet Tuesday with governors Jay Inslee (Washington), Jerry Brown (California), Rick Snyder (Michigan), Terry Branstad (Iowa) and Oregon's Kate Brown.
The private conversation is expected to focus on ways in which China can work with U.S. states and companies to improve building energy efficiency, modernize the electric grid and further commercialize renewable energy technology.
Xi will spend three days in Seattle, including visits at Boeing and Microsoft, before heading to the White House for a meeting with Obama. He'll then stop in New York City for a United Nations event before returning to China.

Trump Says Negotiations For 'Phase 2' Trade Deal To Begin As Soon As Phase 1 Kicks In
Update: When you're president, your thank-you speech can be as long as you want, and nobody will try to shuffle you off-stage by queuing the music.
President Trump started his speech by praising the landmark agreement, and highlighting the market's gangbuster performance since his inauguration (more than 140 stock market ATHs, baby).
Then, in typical Trump fashion, he launched into a winding monologue praising Larry Kudlow (for all the times he helped jawbone the market back into the green) and US ambassador to China Terry Branstad (about whom Trump told a story involving the ambassador's first meeting with President Xi, more than 30 years ago, when he was still a young man). He went on to praise members of the White House staff, and several members of his cabinet - Wilbur Ross, Sonny Perdue and Elaine Chao were each singled out for praise.
At one point, Trump addressed lawmakers in the room, offering members of the House the chance to go vote in Nancy Pelosi's "impeachment hoax", which she announced earlier.
Even Lou Dobbs came in for some praise: Trump praised Dobbs for favorably comparing him to Reagan.
Blackstone CEO Steve Schwarzman, former AIG boss Hank Greenberg, and Henry Kissinger also received shout outs from the president.
Senators Kevin Cramer, Kevin Crapo, Steve Daines, Joni Earnst, Lindsey Graham and several others also got shouted out.
He's still going, as the market gradually ticks higher.
Trump even shouted out JPM, praising the company for yesterday's blockbuster earnings report and joking that he deserves "a little credit" for the bank's performance.
Even Ken Griffin got a shoutout.
In one of the speech's funnier moments, Trump joked about one business executive's habit of seeking autographs from Trump, only to turn around and sell the memorabilia on eBay.

Gov. Reynolds: It would be 'irresponsible not to' appeal jury verdict that Terry Branstad violated state's LGBTQ discrimination law
Less than a week after a judge ruled a jury's verdict, finding that former Iowa governor Terry Branstad had illegally discriminated against a gay state employee, was based on substantial evidence, current governor Kim Reynolds said it would be "irresponsible" not to appeal the verdict.
Reynolds made her remark while speaking to reporters, following the ceremonial pardoning of two turkeys at the governor's mansion on Tuesday. Her decision to appeal the verdict was announced on Friday, Nov. 22.
In 2011, then-governor Branstad slashed the salary of Iowa Workers' Compensation Commissioner Christopher Godfrey from $112,068 to $73,250 (the lowest salary allowed by state law), drastically reduced the budget for Godfrey's office and even eliminated the job of one of Godfey's assistants, in an attempt to force the commissioner to resign. A worker's compensation commissioner serves a fixed term, and state law prevents a governor from firing one.

Christianity And The GOP Are Both On Trial In Iowa.
Terry Branstad, the mustachioed former Republican governor of Iowa and present U.S. ambassador to China, is now on trial in state court back in the Hawkeye State. Branstad, you see, had the temerity to request the resignation, in 2011, of a leftist mandarin named Chris Godfrey, who served as commissioner of the Iowa Division of Workers' Compensation. Godfrey was, reliable sources tell me, unanimously despised by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (Iowa's closest equivalent to a statewide chamber of commerce) due to his deeply held hostility to business interests. After Godfrey - who had been both initially appointed and reappointed by Democratic governors - refused to resign upon Branstad's request, Branstad slashed his pay by 35%. All standard fare for a newly elected Republican governor looking to re-shape the direction of his state's anti-business governance, right? Well. As it turns out, Chris Godfrey is an open homosexual. So Godfrey now claims, in a lawsuit that went to trial in state court in Iowa last week, that his sexual orientation is the reason that Branstad "retaliated" against him. Godfrey offers zero direct evidence that anti-homosexual animus had anything whatsoever to do with the fact that a newly elected Republican governor of Iowa, upon taking office, sought to rework his administration to cleanse it of anti-business bureaucrats who were holdovers of previous Democratic administrations. Even more interesting, Roxanne Conlin, who is Godfrey's attorney, seems to have a personal vendetta of sorts against Branstad - she ran against him in a decades-old gubernatorial race, as a Democrat, and lost. And yet the facts actually get even more bizarre. The trial court judge assigned to the case made some utterly insane bizarre recent rulings as to what types of purely circumstantial evidence to allow at trial. You see, the trial judge here seems hell-bent on ensuring Godfrey has every possible means available to "prove" anti-homosexual retaliatory animus on the part of Branstad, his chief of staff, and his legal advisor. Here is how a local Iowa blogger summarizes the evidentiary proceedings thus far (I have also directly reviewed Branstad's petition for certiorari to the Iowa Supreme Court, for corroboration): The trial started last week with District Court Judge Brad McCall, a Culver appointee and former plaintiff's attorney, presiding. McCall, who is a district court judge in Jasper County (Judicial District 5A), was assigned the trail despite its location in Polk County (Judicial District 5C). Branstad's attorneys, Katie Graham and David Bower, petitioned the Iowa Supreme Court to place a stay on the trial until the resolution of a dispute over evidence McCall allowed. According to the petition, McCall ruled that the following "circumstantial evidence" is admissible at trial: Evidence of candidate/Governor Branstad's public policy positions on Varnum v. Brien, same-sex marriage, and the constitutional amendment process in Iowa; Evidence of Governor Branstad, Boeyink, and Findley's affiliation with the "anti-gay" Republican Party of Iowa;

US Ambassador Raises Concerns During Rare Tibet Visit
BEIJING-The U.S. ambassador to China urged Beijing to engage in substantive dialogue with exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama during a visit to the Himalayan region over the past week, the U.S. Embassy said on May 25. Terry Branstad also "expressed concerns regarding the Chinese government's interference in Tibetan Buddhists' freedom to organize and practice their religion," an embassy statement said. "He encouraged the Chinese government to engage in substantive dialogue with the Dalai Lama or his representatives, without preconditions, to seek a settlement that resolves differences," it said.
Branstad also raised long-standing concerns about the lack of consistent access to the region. The rare visit to Tibet and neighboring Qinghai Province ran from Sunday through Saturday. Hosted by the Tibetan authorities, Branstad was given access to important religious and cultural sites, including the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Norbulingka, and Sera Monastery in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa. He also met with senior Tibetan religious and cultural leaders, the embassy said.
China tightly restricts access to Tibet by foreigners, especially journalists and diplomats. In response to those restrictions, the U.S. Congress last year passed an act that would deny entry to the United States for those involved in formulating or enforcing such policies. China says Tibet has been part of its territory for centuries, but many Tibetans say they were effectively an independent nation for most of that time. Beijing's control was most recently asserted when the Communist Party's military wing, the People's Liberation Army, invaded the region in 1950. The Dalai Lama fled to India amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959 and calls for genuine autonomy for Tibet under Chinese rule. Beijing labels the 83-year-old cleric a dangerous separatist, has refused contacts with his representatives for more than a decade and objects strongly to any meetings between him and foreign politicians.
In recent years there has been a significant tightening of control over Tibetan Buddhism, use of the Tibetan language and traditional cultural expression. Following anti-government protests in 2008, Beijing imposed a policy of "grid policing" that substantially reduces travel and social life for Tibetans, even while China ramps up domestic tourism in the region. Those methods have been subsequently imposed in the neighboring region of Xinjiang, where an estimated 1 million members of its native Muslim ethnic groups have been confined to detention centers.

After rare Tibet visit, U.S. ambassador urges China to have talks with Dalai Lama
Terry Branstad, the U.S. ambassador to China, urged Beijing to engage in substantive dialogue with exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama during a visit to the Himalayan region over the past week.

It said Branstad also raised long-standing concerns about the lack of consistent access to the Tibetan Autonomous Region.
The rare visit to the TAR and neighboring Qinghai province began last Sunday and ended on Saturday.

U.S. ambassador to China to make first visit to Tibet since 2013: report
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad was due to begin visiting Tibet on Sunday for official meetings and visits to religious and cultural sites, according to a news report on Sunday. Branstad was scheduled to visit the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province, a historic region of Tibet known to Tibetans as Amdo, from Sunday to Saturday, Radio Free Asia said in a report. The State Department did not immediately comment on the story.
Radio Free Asia said it would be the first visit to Tibet by a U.S. official since the U.S. Congress approved a law in December that requires the United States to deny visas to Chinese officials in charge of implementing policies that restrict access to Tibet for foreigners. The U.S. government is required to begin denying visas by the end of this year. In December, China denounced the United States for passing the law, saying it was "resolutely opposed" to the U.S. legislation on what China considers an internal affair, and it risked causing "serious harm" to their relations.
Since then, tensions have been running high between the two countries over trade. China struck a more aggressive tone in its trade war with the United States on Friday, suggesting a resumption of talks between the world's two largest economies would be meaningless unless Washington changed course. On Saturday, China's senior diplomat Wang Yi told U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that recent U.S. words and actions had harmed the interests of China and its enterprises, and that Washington should show restraint.
While the Trump administration has taken a tough stance towards China on trade and highlighted security rivalry with Beijing, the administration has so far not acted on congressional calls for it to impose sanctions on China's former Communist Party chief in Tibet, Chen Quanguo, for the treatment of minority Muslims in Xinjiang province, where he is currently party chief. A State Department report in March said Chen had replicated in Xinjiang, policies similar to those credited with reducing opposition to Chinese rule in Tibet. Beijing sent troops into remote, mountainous Tibet in 1950 in what it officially terms a peaceful liberation and has ruled there with an iron fist ever since.

Meeting Between Trump And Xi Said To Be Delayed Till June: SCMP
So much for the (delayed) April meeting between Trump and Xi.
According to a report by the SCMP, the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to end the trade war which was tentatively pushed back from March to April, may be pushed back again, this time to to June, as the two leaders "will not be able to finalise an agreement by April."
It had initially been hoped that they would be able to reach a deal more quickly, but one source who has been briefed on the arrangement told the South China Morning Post that a meeting in April was less likely, while another said the summit could be held in June.
As previously reported (almost daily), while the two nations have been stepping up negotiations on the text of the trade agreement, a SCMP source confirmed once again of the growing rift within the Trump administration regarding the deal with China, where the main division is how much importance will be attached to an enforcement mechanism to ensure the Chinese side lives up to its side of the bargain, or whether it will be enough to secure an agreement in principle and declare success.
Originally Trump and Xi were expected to meet at Trump's Mar-a-Lago private resort in late March, but US ambassador to China Terry Branstad later said the summit had been delayed because the deal was still under discussion. Then, to much fanfare - with the narrative spun that a delayed meeting was only further proof of the two sides working hard to reach a deal - it was reported that the two leaders would meet in April, but the timetable now appears to have been put back once again.
It is not yet known where Trump and Xi would meet in June, but the Chinese president is also expected to travel to Osaka in Japan for the G20 summit.
For those who have missed the key hurdles to the signing of an official deal, the story goes like this: while the US has been content with China's promises to purchase more goods from the US for the next few years, the White House has been pushing China to address what remain the biggest long-standing grievances including the alleged theft of intellectual property, forced technology transfer and unfair competition.
US trade rep Lighthizer has been one of the main figures pushing for an enforcement mechanism to ensure that Beijing lives up to any pledges it gives. But Beijing is growing alarmed by the proposals and argued that enforcement must be "two-way, fair and equal". The tough stance taken by Washington's top trade negotiator has won bipartisan support in the US Congress - where Democrats are now insisting that Trump not rush to deliver a weak deal just to boost markets - as well as respect from his Chinese counterparts who describe him as detail-oriented and unlikely to back down.
"Lighthizer is a very professional and experienced trade negotiator. Talking to him is the right track to take," another source said.
"Lighthizer is a tough negotiator but China pays high respect to him. China needs to step up its research on him".
Meanwhile, critics have suggested that Trump's enthusiasm for more tariffs may have eased because of the recent stock market fall - Trump reportedly said that a trade deal would propel the Dow some 2,000 point higher, suggesting that Trump's only goal is micromanaging of the stock maret - and concerns over the wider US economy, particularly from farmers who rely on exports to China. It has also been suggested that the reforms to China's economic policies demanded by the US could take years to enact.
In the latest developments over trade talks, during a St Patrick's Day reception at the White House on Thursday, Trump said: "We'll have news on China. Probably one way or the other, we're going to know over the next three to four weeks." He added that China had been "very responsible and very reasonable," saying: "If that one gets done, it will be something that people will be talking about for a long time."
Regardless of yet another potential postponement to the meeting between the two presidents, the two sides are working to keep momentum going, and this week official Chinese state news agency Xinhua said "concrete progress" had been made following a phone conversation between Vice-Premier Liu He and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Thursday. The news, predictably, helped propel markets higher on the now traditional "trade war optimism" narrative when in reality the two sides appear to be drifting ever further apart as the easy aspects of the negotiation have all be ironed out, and now the only outstanding items remaining are those which will make any any meaningful deal impossible.

DEEP STATE COUP: DOJ Arrested Chinese Business Owner Wahzhou Meng at Most Opportune Time to Hurt US Economy the Most
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce released a statement last week on the Trump-Xi dinner business meeting in Buenos Aires.
The Chinese Government released a very positive statement on progress made during the meeting.
But then news broke on Wednesday that Canadian authorities arrested the chief financial officer of Huawei at the request of the United States. Meng Wanzhou is the CfO of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, the largest communications company in the world.
The US Department of Justice had Wangzhou arrested while President Trump and his top administration officials were meeting with Chinese officials after the G-20 meetings in Buenos Aires.
Last Thursday Peter Navarro, assistant to the president on trade policy, spoke with Trish Regan on her new show Primetime.
Navarro told Trish Regan that President Trump and his administration WERE NOT NOTIFIED that the DOJ was arresting Chinese business leader
The DOJ arrested the Chinese business leader knowing it could disrupt President Trump's trade talks.
On Friday morning, Larry Kudlow, the White House Director of the National Economic Council under President Donald Trump, joined Stuart Varney to discuss the latest unemployment rate and the ongoing Chinese trade talks.
Kudlow echoed Peter Navarro and said Trump White House officials were not notified of the arrest of Meng Wanzhou while they were meeting with China for the critical trade talks.
The DOJ went rogue in what appears to be an attempt to derail the trade talks with China(?)
This would cause chaos in the markets and possibly an international political crisis.
The Deep State DOJ is playing with fire in their attempt to destroy President Trump.
On Monday the Chinese government summoned US Ambassador Terry Branstad over the arrest of Meng Wangzhou.
The Department of Justice could have waited to arrest Wangzhou Weng until after the trade talks were completed. Instead they chose to arrest the prominent business leader during the Trump-Xi talks.
The Deep State knew this would cause the maximum damage.
The Deep State does not care that Americans will be hurt as they continue their open coup against the American president.

I'm no autist like you guise, but I'd like to mention that former Iowa governor Terry Branstad is now our ambassador to China. He's known Xi for decades - very good friends. And he's apparently doing quite well.
Most of the press on him and China go back a few years. But Iowa is sending mucho soybeans and piggies there. Chinese are hooked on bacon.

Former governor, Terry Branstad is our ambassador to China, too. He's been close friends with Xi since early 80s. He's a reliable conservative, but very pro-farmer, in the BigAg sense. Iowa has been taken over by Monsanto, too. Capitol, Des Moines - totally libtard. At least with have Grassley for senator.

US Sanctions over Beijing's Purchase of Russia's S-400 Missile Defense System, China Cancels Security Meeting with the US
The annual meeting between defense officials of both countries was scheduled for mid-October, a sign of heightened bilateral tensions.
In response to illegally imposed US sanctions on Beijing over its purchase of Russian SU-35 combat aircraft and S-400 missile defense systems, the deputy head of China's Central Ministry Commission (CMC) summoned the US embassy's acting military attache. He called US sanctions a breach of international rules and standards, a hegemonic action harming bilateral military relations.
Beijing recalled naval commander Shen Jinlong. He was participating in the 23rd International Seapower Symposium - co-hosted by the US Chief of Naval Operations and the White House at the US Naval War College in Newport, RI.
According to Chinese media, Beijing demands that the US "immediately redress its wrongs and withdraw related sanctions." Huang said China's military reserves the right to take further countermeasures.
Its National Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian said
"(w)e demand the US side immediately correct its wrongdoing and withdraw the so-called sanctions. Otherwise, the US side must bear the consequences caused by this act."
On Friday, China's Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang summoned US Ambassador Terry Branstad, demanding the rollback of unacceptable Trump regime actions.
In his Friday General Assembly address, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed strong support for multilateralism, criticizing US policies, saying:
"What we see today is that international rules and multilateral mechanisms are under attack, and the international landscape is filled with uncertainties and destabilizing factors," adding:
"China's answer is clear-cut. All along, China has upheld the international order and pursued multilateralism."
Addressing Trump's hostile General Assembly address, he stressed that "(m)ultilateralism is under fire precisely when we need it most." It's vital in dealing with geopolitical challenges.
He warned that Beijing won't be blackmailed on trade. In his UN address, Trump shamefully accused China of meddling in US November midterm elections, citing no evidence because there is none.
Yi stressed four principles:
replacing confrontation with mutual cooperation on all major issues;
upholding international rules, norms and standards, especially honoring international treaties, conventions, and other agreements;
upholding, defending and preserving fairness and justice in international affairs; and
working together to deliver real results, according to UN Charter and World Trade Organization principles.
Yi stressed that China pursues peaceful, cooperative development. He called for denuclearizing the Korean peninsula, along with fully observing and implementing the JCPOA Iran nuclear deal.
Beijing will continue defending its sovereign rights and interests, he said. It "will open still wider to the world."
Yi claimed his country's Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation is "the largest platform for international cooperation."
It calls for over $1 trillion in longterm investment. Chairman of China's largest construction machinery manufacturer XCMG said
"One Belt, One Road makes our internationalization strategy like a tiger with wings added."
It conflicts with Trump's America First agenda, including Pompeo's Indo-Pacific Economic Vision, announced in July to compete with China regionally.
Bilateral relations are greatly strained politically, economically and militarily, notably over Trump's trade war.
Washington demands all other countries bend to its will, a hostile agenda risking greater war than already.
Its provocative military buildup close to Sino/Russian borders could lead to devastating confrontation. Catastrophic nuclear war is possible by accident or design.
Washington's hell bent rage for unchallenged dominance is the greatest threat to world peace.
A Final Comment
US war secretary Mattis cancelled a China trip scheduled for later this month to meet with his counterpart General Wei Fenghe, a further sign of strained relations.
Late Sunday, an unnamed US official said the trip is off. The State Department, along with China's defense and foreign ministries issued no comments. Nor did the US embassy in Beijing.

China Summons US Ambassador Over Sanctions Scandal
China's foreign ministry summoned the US ambassador on Saturday to lodge an official protest over the sanctions imposed by the United States against a Chinese military organization for buying Russian fighter jets and missiles, state media reported. The announcement came just hours after a Chinese defense ministry spokesman called on the US to "immediately revoke the sanctions or "bear the consequences."
Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang, summoned US Ambassador Terry Branstad and "lodged solemn representations over US sanctions against (the) Chinese military", the Foreign Ministry said in a brief online statement, and added the following:
Zheng Zeguang pointed out that the US action to impose sanctions on Chinese military agency and official on the ground of relevant military cooperation between China and Russia severely violates basic norms governing the international relations. Such mean behavior is a blatant hegemonic act. The China-Russia military cooperation is normal cooperation between two sovereign states, and the US side has no right to interfere. The US act has severely harmed the state-to-state and mil-to-mil relations and affected the cooperation in international and regional affairs between China and the US. The Chinese side will take every necessary measure to firmly safeguard its national interests. We strongly urge the US side to correct its mistake immediately and withdraw so-called sanctions. Otherwise, the US side will have to bear all the consequences.
China's central military commission also summoned an acting military attache at the U.S. embassy on Saturday night over the sanctions. The Chinese side also decided to immediately recall commander Shen Jinlong, who is in the United States for an international maritime force meeting, CCTV reported.

'''President Xi goes to Iowa? Trump floats farm state to seal trade deal'''
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday suggested he could sign a long-awaited trade agreement with China in the farm state of Iowa, which has been hard hit by tariffs in a nearly 16-month trade war between the world's largest economies. Trump said on Friday evening that negotiations about a '''"phase one"''' agreement were going well and he hoped to sign the deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping at a U.S. location when work on the agreement was completed. '''"We're looking at a different couple of locations. It could even be in Iowa," he told reporters at the White House. "We're discussing locations, but I like to get deals done first."'''
Trump and Xi had been expected to ink the agreement at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Santiago, Chile from Nov. 16-17, but those plans were thrown into disarray on Wednesday when Chile withdrew as host of the meeting. Trump said he would prefer to sign the agreement in the United States. '''"I would do it in the U.S.," he said. Asked if Xi would too, Trump said: "He would too."''' He said Iowa, a key state in the 2020 presidential election in early February, would be a good location. "We're thinking about Iowa, you know why, because it would be the largest order in history for farmers. So to me, Iowa makes sense. I love Iowa. It's a possibility," Trump said.
Trump won the 2016 presidential election in Iowa with 51.1% of the vote, compared to 41.7% for Democrat Hillary Clinton. The president carried Iowa by the largest margin of any Republican candidate since Ronald Reagan in 1980. It was not immediately clear whether China would agree to sign the trade deal in the United States.
Xi is no stranger to the farm state. He first visited Iowa in 1985, when he was leading a government agricultural research delegation. At the time he met with first-time governor Terry Branstad, who is now Trump's envoy to Beijing. When he was vice president in 2012, Xi returned to the eastern Iowa town of Muscatine to meet his host family from the 1985 trip. While the U.S.-China trade war has slashed exports of U.S. soybeans and other crops, Trump has sought to offset the harm to farmers through $28 billion in trade aid support over the past two years, and his support among farmers remains strong. Trump's approval rating was 71% as of Aug. 23, down from 79% in July, according to trade publication Farm Journal Pulse's poll of 1,153 farmers.
