Italian Govt on Brink of Collapse, Right Wing Coalition Leading in Snap Election Polls
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte's administration faces a crisis after former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's party resigned from the government, taking several cabinet ministers with him.
Matteo Renzi, who heads the Italia Viva (IV) party, announced on Wednesday he could no longer support the Conte coalition government, leaving the alliance of the Five-Star Movement and the left-wing Democratic Party (PD) without a majority in the parliament.
The move comes after weeks of tensions between Renzi and Conte over various disagreements on policy - primarily relating to how to spend coronavirus bailout cash - along with many threats made by Renzi in the past to leave the government.
"It takes courage, inner freedom, and a sense of responsibility. We did not cause the crisis. It has been building for months. Now, we will leave our seats," Renzi said, according to Il Giornale.
By leaving the government, Renzi also takes away several key ministers who are also members of Italia Viva, including Minister of Agriculture Teresa Bellanova and Minister of Family and Equal Opportunities Elena Bonetti.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Conte had met with President Sergio Mattarella and told media that he hoped he could still count on Renzi's support, saying the government could only work with a majority and that Italians would not accept a new government crisis.
Several scenarios could unfold following Renzi's move, including a snap election, which is believed to be President Mattarella's prefered scenario, as opposed to a fragile coalition in parliament.
Opinion polls show that an election could see the formation of a new centre-right government, as populist Senator Matteo Salvini's League and the national-conservative Brother of Italy (FdI) scored highly in an Swg poll released this week.
The poll showed Salvini's League as the most popular in Italy at 23.2 per cent. While the Brother's of Italy, led by firebrand Giorgia Meloni, scored 17.2 per cent, just over two percentage points fewer than the Democratic Party which scored 19.4 per cent.
The League has topped opinion polls for months, but the FdI has seen rapid growth in popularity over the last two years, rising from the 6 per cent at the European Parliament elections in 2019.
On Wednesday, Giorgia Meloni demanded the resignation of the Conte government, saying: "Italians on their knees, the government in disarray. Italy cannot afford to waste any more time. Conte must resign. Elections now."
Matteo Salvini also released a statement on behalf of the centre-right coalition, saying: "The centre-right is the country's leading political force and after a summit that confirmed the great unity of the coalition, asks that the prime minister take note of the crisis and resign immediately or, otherwise, appear in Parliament tomorrow to ask for a vote of confidence."
"We rely on the wisdom of the President of the Republic for a quick solution: the centre-right parties clearly reaffirm their unwillingness to support left-wing governments," he added.

Italy's leftist government grants 600,000 illegal migrants amnesty
Italy's leftist-establishment government earlier this week moved ahead with plans to grant amnesty to 600,000 illegal migrants living in the country, despite widespread opposition.
As Teresa Bellanova, Italy's pro-mass migration Agriculture Minister, signed the bill which granted six-month residency permits to illegal migrants working in the agricultural and domestic sectors into law on Wednesday, she cried tears of joy, Il Giornale reports.
The new decree has faced considerable criticism from inside and outside of Italy's ruling coalition. The Five Star Movement, which rules alongside the Left-wing establishment Democratic Party (PD), had initially lobbied for one month residency permits to be granted to the migrant laborers, but failed to impress their will upon the seemingly more powerful PD.
Outside of the ruling coalition, Right-wing populists like Matteo Salvini of the League Party and Giorgia Meloni of Brothers of Italy (FdI) argued that the Agriculture Minister's tears were entirely misplaced.

Outside of the ruling coalition, Right-wing populists like Matteo Salvini of the League Party and Giorgia Meloni of Brothers of Italy (FdI) argued that the Agriculture Minister's tears were entirely misplaced.
Responding to Bellnova's antics, Salvini said: "Minister Bellanova's tears for the poor immigrants, with no reference to the millions of unemployed Italians, do not move anyone."
"Instead of securing jobs for the millions of unemployed Italians and the many regular and respectable immigrants present in Italy, the government thinks of an amnesty for thousands of illegal immigrants," the former interior minister also said.
Giorgia Meloni also took the opportunity to blast the minister's stunt, saying: "Hundreds, perhaps thousands of Italians have cried, perhaps at night, secretly from their children, crushed by desperation for losing everything, or for fear of losing everything. help that never came."
Senator Stefano Candiani of Salvini's League party has vowed to oppose the decree in every way possible.
"We will do everything democratically in our possession to stop this wicked project, we will collect signatures, if necessary, to promote a referendum and force them to the polls, where the Italians will punish them severely."
The new decree is expected to affect between 500,000 and 600,000 illegal migrants in the country.

Salvini slams Italian government's plan to grant amnesty to 600,000 illegal migrants
Senator Matteo Salvini, the leader of the populist League party in Italy, has slammed Italy's leftist-establishment government's plans to grant amnesty to some 600,000 illegal migrants.
According to a report from the Milan-based newspaper Il Giornale, the plan - put forward by Italian Agriculture Minister Teresa Bellanova - would allow the government to issue six-month, renewable residency and work permit to the 600,000 illegal migrants
Responding to the plan, Salvini took to Twitter, writing: "The government has announced an amnesty for illegal migrants at a time when the number of arrivals has increased by 350 percent. 136 people made landfall on Lampedusa only this evening. Italy as a migrant camp? No, thanks."
Aside from the 181 migrants that were allowed to disembark from the cruise ship 'Raffaele Rubattino' on Monday in Palermo, 200 more migrants arrived on the island of Lampedusa this week. According to a report from La Repubblica, the newest group of 200 migrants joins another group of 100 or so migrants that have been living on the Favaloro pier for the past two days. A few kilometers off the coast of Lampedusa another 118 migrants are in quarantine.
Lampedusa Mayor Salvatore Martello has called on Italy's defense and interior ministers, as well as the President of the Region, to take immediate action to remedy the situation.
"The landings continue, and in this case, moreover, there is a dangerous rejection of responsibility: in fact, no military means so far is willing to accompany the migrants from the dock to the Favaloro pier from where they must be transferred from since the hotspot is already full and cannot accommodate other migrants for the necessary medical quarantine."
"As mayor I have no direct intervention power. What should we do? I asked to tow the boat to the pier but it is not possible to go on like this. We are in full coronavirus emergency, the citizens of the island have the right to have their health protected and I also understand that the same needs apply to the men of law enforcement. But this situation is unacceptable. The institutions that have a duty to intervene they cannot unload the weight of the reception entirely on our shoulders."
