Journalists flock to Bluesky as X becomes increasingly 'toxic'. NBC
Journalists are finding more readers and less hate on Bluesky than on the platform they used to know as Twitter.Preaching to the choir

When Ashton Pittman, an award-winning news editor and reporter, first joined the app Bluesky, he said, he was the only Mississippi journalist he knew to be using it. Until about five weeks ago, he said, that was the case. But now, Pittman said, there are at least 15 Mississippi journalists on Bluesky as it becomes a preferred platform for reporters, writers, activists and other groups who have become increasingly alienated by X.
Pittman's outlet, the Mississippi Free Press, already hasmore followers on Bluesky (28,500) than it ever did on X (22,000), the platform formerly known as Twitter, and Pittman said the audience engagement on Bluesky is booming. (Wow increase of 6,000)
"We have posts that are exactly the same on Twitter and on Bluesky, and with those identical posts, Bluesky is getting 20 times the engagement or more than Twitter," Pittman said. "Seeing a social media platform that doesn't throttle links really makes it clear how badly we were being limited."
Since Elon Musk bought Twitter, has turned the platform into an increasingly difficult place for journalists, and many had come to suspect that the platform had begun to suppress the reach of posts that include links to external websites. On Sunday, Musk confirmed the platform has deprioritized posts including links, which was how journalists and other creators historically shared their work. But four journalists told NBC News that after millions of users migrated to Bluesky, an alternative that resembles a pared-back version of X, after the election, they are rebuilding their audiences there, too.
"My average post that isn't a hot-button issue or isn't trending might not perform as well on X as it does on Bluesky," said Phil Lewis, a senior front page editor at HuffPost who has over 400,000 followers on X and close to 300,000 on Bluesky. "Judging by retweets, likes and comments, it's a world of difference."
Platform and audience editors at The Guardian and The Boston Globe have publicly noted higher traffic to their news websites from Bluesky than from competitors including Threads, Meta's X alternative. Rose Wang, Bluesky's chief operating officer, quoted the Guardian's stats, writing: "We want Bluesky to be a great home for journalists, publishers, and creators. Unlike other platforms, we don't de-promote your links. Post all the links you want - Bluesky is a lobby to the open web."
Bluesky, initially built as part of an initiative funded by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, who cut ties with the company in May, launched to the public as an invitation-only platform last year. Some of its earliest users included Black, trans and politically progressive people. Journalists who belong to and cover issues affecting marginalized populations have found Bluesky to be a much more welcoming environment.
"I think that Bluesky's demographic is literally just anybody who can't stand the sort of toxic environment that Twitter has become, and that spans a large range of people," said Erin Reed, an independent journalist covering trans rights issues on Substack."Journalists don't like toxicity and toxic comments. We want to have conversations with people, and we don't want everything to devolve into slurs being hurled back and forth."(the post toxic articles and don't expect toxicity back, makes sense.)
Numerous studies and analyses have found that after Musk took over the platform, use of hate speech increased. Over time, the platform became a bastion of the right-wing internet.(TY Elon)
Reed also said traffic to her Substack articles has doubled since she began posting exclusively on Bluesky. She and Talia Lavin, a journalist and author who covers the far right, said X had become overrun with anti-trans speech, as well as other forms of bigotry and harassment. Lavin said she noticed an uptick of antisemitism and pro-Nazi accounts on X, as did Pittman.
In April, NBC News found that on X, at least 150 pro-Nazi accounts were able to purchase verification on the app and boost pro-Nazi content that was viewed millions of times on the app.
"If I'm not able to drive any consistent views to my newsletter from Twitter, why am I here?" Lavin said about her decision to move to Bluesky. "All the replies were AI bots and Nazis, and none of the earnestly engaged readers are seeing my content.So what was the point of subjecting myself to psychic damage?
While journalists and writers have begun finding success in reaching an engaged and paying audience on Bluesky, they aren't the only ones. "On Twitter you would see two likes on a positive story that on Bluesky is getting dozens of likes and shares."

When New Yorker fact-checker Talia Lavin posted a series of photos on Twitter mistakenly implying that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent had a Nazi tattoo, she was quickly informed of her error. So she deleted her tweet, and explained why in a follow-up. Within a week, she found herself resigning from her job.

"I just feel like I made a small mistake and it's destroyed my life," Lavin told the Cut today.

She first posted her tweet in the early morning hours of Monday, June 18th, and her follow-up came shortly after.

The question is whether all of these anti-MAGA trolls represent a corrective counterforce or a misguided reaction. "Even the most ethically oriented troll is always going to be controversial because it uses deception," says Gabriella Coleman, a cultural anthropologist known for her research on Anonymous. Trolling is also chaotic as a rule. "These campaigns spiral," she told me.

The Parler trolls on Reddit first got together in a forum called r/ParlerWatch. It was imagined as a small space for like-minded Redditors to share the most out-there things they'd seen on Parler, and to come up with ways to mess with the people who were sincerely posting on the app. But it grew quickly, gaining about 16,000 members in its first week, and its creator, Sloane-who asked to go by his middle name for the same reasons as Michael-decided to steer the forum in a more serious direction. Now, instead of hatching practical jokes, its 150,000 members focus on surveilling the Trump-loyalist internet and organizing moments of "armchair activism," such as combing through Parler data scraped from the site after the Capitol riot and sending tips to the FBI. "Monitoring right-wing spaces online has always been kind of a hobby of mine," Sloane told me.

Members who still wanted to do anti-MAGA trolling, led by Michael, went on to form a spin-off group with Sloane's blessing: r/ParlerTrick. The members of the smaller forum discussed their forays into far-right spaces, where they posed as caricatures of liberals and riled people up to no real end. Later, they experimented with using the language and framing of a MAGA diehard to push their own politics, including support for unions, but this ended up confusing everyone. Their messages on Parler would sometimes get reposted as screenshots in r/ParlerWatch and discussed as if they were authentic right-wing activity. Eventually, the whole subreddit became a role-playing game, Michael told me. "We started having people coming in not knowing if it was real or not, which is perfect," he said. The members now call themselves "patriots" and disavow liberals with every sentence. As role-playing games go, it's low-effort: At the time of the Georgia runoff election, they made a meme of Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue that said simply, "They know what they did to Donald Trump." It was shared by Trump fans on Parler hundreds of times, though no one actually had any idea what Kelly Loeffler or David Perdue might have done to Donald Trump.

Trolling used to be the pastime of a subculture that considered itself apolitical, and that claimed to be interested in provoking everyone. But for Michael and Sloane, the jokes are part of how they practice their politics-the only fun part, they say. Similarly, many politically minded young people have come of age with an innate understanding of how antisocial behavior online can be used to win attention for and participation in a chosen cause. "Trolling has a long and noble history, and shitposting can be useful," says Talia Lavin, the author of Culture Warlords: My Journey Into the Dark Web of White Supremacy. She took part in an attempt to troll Trump's "Voter Fraud Hotline," she told me, by submitting a long video in which she described being intimidated by the sexual attractiveness of an antifa operative at her polling place.

But trolling can have especially unpredictable results when it engages with hateful rhetoric and conspiratorial thinking. It might even help spread and amplify misinformation or extremist beliefs. Some r/ParlerTrick members, for example, created memes that, per Michael, had "some racist stuff" in them, or might have stoked "unnecessary hate." The forum has struggled with this issue, he said. "It's a thin line. You have to really pay attention to what you're doing."

Talia Lavin, who is Jewish and the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors,[3] became motivated to investigate the topic following white supremacist rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017 where "Jews will not replace us!" was a rallying cry.[4]

In March 2019, Lavin sold Culture Warlords to editor Paul Whitlatch at Hachette Books.[1][5] It was published on October 13, 2020.[6][7]

Lavin invented online personae which allowed her to gain entry to white supremacist websites and chatrooms, gathering information for journalists and anti-fascist activists. The book describes these present-day encounters while also tracing "the distant and near history of the alt-right, from the medieval European blood libel to Henry Ford's mainstreaming of anti-Semitic ideas to Gamergate and the stories of a radicalized adolescent YouTuber."[3]

Talia Lavin has also written about Anti-Semitism for NPR.

For the far left, nothing is sacred when it comes to sticking up for anti-Semitic, 9/11 trivializing Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn).
Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a decorated former Navy SEAL who suffered major injuries in the war on terror as a result of 9/11, had this to say about Omar's latest statement trivializing 9/11:

After that, the left spewed a string of ad hominem attack that can only be characterized as vile. According to the Washington Examiner:
Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL who was wounded in Afghanistan, was derided the left and accused of "playing the wounded victim" after he called for "deference" in discussions of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Crenshaw, 35, who wears an eye patch after losing his right eye in Afghanistan, has received two Bronze Stars, including one with valor, the Purple Heart, and the Navy Commendation Medal with Valor.

He criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar this week for appearing to downplay the Sept. 11 attacks in a recent speech.

It gets worse. They called him some of the sickest epithets ever seen against a wounded war vet: 'Captain shithead,' 'Nazi,' 'eyeless f–k,' according to the Examiner's headline.

And it wasn't just anonymous Internet trolls from Russia pretending to be leftists, it was real leftists we've already heard enough from as it is:

"The real victim, captain shithead, speaks," wrote Lavin, linking to Crenshaw's video.

Freelance writer Rob Rousseau wrote to Crenshaw, "You're deliberately lying about what [Omar] said you eyeless fuck." The comment appears to have been removed.

Other leftists were also named leftists, the 'Nazi' hurlers.

A look at Twitter since the Examiner piece ran shows that they are still at it, calling the war veteran 'fascist,' 'rotten,' 'stooge,' 'big phony' 'a cultist,' 'a murderer' (more than one of them), 'perniciously dishonest' and 'trying to make a name for himself' and other epithets, with one saying he 'shouldn't be there' and another saying he can 'eat shit.'

When we say 'rabid left,' this is what we mean by rabid left.

Two things leap out.
One, we've seen Crenshaw before, he's the guy who responded with magnaminity to the young actor on Saturday Night Live who originally made fun of his war wounds. He even helped the actor save face by appearing on a skit with him, a very funny one, which smoothed things over on the matter. The other thing he did was call the man up to comfort him when he attempted suicide. That is class, with a capital 'C.'

The other thing is that the left screamed to the high heavens when President Trump made some admitted ill-advised rude remarks about the distinguished war record of John McCain. Most of us can accept that a person can have a fine war record and still be a bad politician, or a politician we disagree with, which describes McCain to a 'T.' Sen. Tammy Duckworth is a Democratic politician with a fine war record and wretched political ideas, yet we don't see Republicans hurling abuse at her over her military service. Are there any Republicans out there calling her a 'murderer'? They sure as heck are hurling that at Crenshaw. Republicans, by contrast, thank Duckworth for her service and disagree with her on her politics. This called being an adult.

This screeching from the left about Crenshaw is bad politics – for the left. Hurling sick names at Crenshaw may make them feel better, but it turns off a lot of voters. It's the equivalent of hippies spitting on returning Vietnam War veterans at airports, something that has historically been infuriating enough to flip entire elections to Republicans - from Nixon to Reagan.

The left is once again showing its hippie-spitting face, and it's ugly. There are likely to be consequences.

Crenshaw was elected to Congress last November. He joined the U.S. Navy in 2006 and served for 10 years as a Navy SEAL, including multiple deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq. He was wounded by a roadside bomb while on his third tour of Afghanistan in 2012. Crenshaw lost his right eye in the explosion, but he was able to recover eyesight in his left eye through surgery.

Eli Valley, a political cartoonist known for his anti-Israel drawings, suggested Crenshaw was a Nazi. "Wow it's GOP-Nazy Party Terrorist Incitement Night on NBC," wrote Valley, linking to Crenshaw's comment.

Ryan Cooper, a national correspondent at The Week, blasted Crenshaw's comments as "fascist propaganda" and claimed the congressman was "play[ing] the wounded victim." "[C]lassic fascist propaganda technique: whip up a storm of murder frenzy, then operatically play the wounded victim," wrote Cooper.

Rep. Devin Nunes repeated a 4chan meme on national television

Last night on Laura Ingraham's show, The Ingraham Angle, a strange thing happened (stranger than usual, I mean). Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) stopped by for an interview, ostensibly to talk about Rep. Adam Schiff's (D-CA) latest actions regarding the ongoing Russia probe. "This is clearly an investigation again, without a crime. We've looked for two years - didn't find anything, at all," Nunes said, which is misleading at best. He went on to speak about the "cottage industry" of press people who are following the case and reporting it, so the public has an idea of what goes on behind closed doors. Nunes sounded offended when he reported to the Capitol for what was, in his words, a routine meeting, and he saw many camera people waiting for him there.

"I don't know what these people are going to do - this cottage industry of press people. They're going to have to go learn code or something, which was Obama's plan. Because they're not going to have a job after this!" Did you catch it? This is where it gets odd. While the rest of Nunes' appearance was boilerplate Fox outrage bait, that sentence - "They're going to have to go learn code or something" - was the congressman signaling, knowingly or not, that he understood the priorities of a certain group online.

When Nunes said "learn to code," he was amplifying a mass harassment campaign that started on 4chan's politics board, which was meant to target journalists. The last few weeks have not been kind to media professionals. More than a thousand jobs have been lost after layoffs at HuffPost, BuzzFeed, Verizon, and Gannett, and the general mood across the industry can be best described as "anxious and depressed."

Over those same weeks, journalists who had been laid off have been told to "learn to code" because 4chan's crypto-fascist politics board /pol/ had noticed the layoffs and had formulated a plan to increase the distress of anyone who'd been let go. In a thread entitled "HAPPENING - Huffpo / Buzzfeed / other MSM garbage (((journalists))) FIRED," which discussed the extant and impending layoffs, there were dozens of responses laying out the "learn to code" plan, wrote Talia Lavin in The New Republic. Lavin is a freelance journalist whose column at HuffPost had been cut as a result of the layoffs at that company. In the piece, Lavin points out that "learn to code" was another targeted mass harassment campaign dreamed up at 4chan.

On its face, 4chan is a forum: it was started in 2003 by Christopher Poole, then a teenager, as a place to post about anime. However, since then, the culture of the board has shifted. Its users were always trollish, playing pranks on the wider internet (remember Rickrolling?), but in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, they've become openly political. Today, 4chan is a home of the far right. They seed memes and ideas there that have ended up in President Trump's speeches and tweets, laundered through the various blogs and websites that make up the right-wing media ecosystem. Last night, by saying "learn to code," Nunes - again, wittingly or unwittingly - parroted one of those ideas.
While that message may seem innocuous, the nature of 4chan meant that anyone receiving messages saying "learn to code" online was shot through with anti-Semitism, racism, and general hate. When Fox News' Tucker Carlson ran a segment on "learn to code," the meme was legitimized by a seemingly reliable source. "The experience of the 'learn to code' campaign was being bombarded with harassment that others stridently claimed wasn't harassment; being told death threats were a joke; having my name broadcast mockingly on Fox News-all for the temerity of tweeting about losing a column," wrote Lavin. "It was an experience of being mugged by gaslight."

It's possible that Nunes didn't know any of this when he was speaking with Laura Ingraham. After all, useful idiots have been part of information operations since information operations became a widely practiced mode of warfare. Donald Trump broke the Republican Party - and the rest of the right - in so many ways, but his election also reshaped how information spreads across conservative groups. The people making the memes are now the right's main intellectual organ: the rest are either useful idiots or deluded.

Nunes' office did not respond to a request for comment.

4chan trolls flood laid off HuffPost, BuzzFeed reporters with death threats

The threats are part of a coordinated campaign organized on the far-right message board.

Shortly after he tweeted the news of his own layoff, Nick Wing checked his inbox at HuffPost and saw an email with a few pictures from a troll.

One was an image of President Trump, and another was a Photoshopped meme of Fox News' Tucker Carlson. The edited image shows two bodies hanging from a tree next to the words "Day of the Rope," a far-right meme about their desire to execute journalists. Underneath Carlson, where the scrolling cable news ticker would usually appear, it reads "JUST KILL THEM. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN."

Wing was one of many journalists who were let go by BuzzFeed and HuffPost this week and were sent death threats from trolls organizing their efforts on the far-right message board 4chan. Many of those targeted by the harassment campaign did not cover the far-right, including Wing, whose beat focused on inequality and guns.

"It really is upsetting to see such outright animus toward the entire journalism profession, to the point where trolls are openly reveling in people's misfortune or even working to make it worse. But ultimately I think it says more about their character than anything," Wing told NBC News.

"What sort of sad and pathetic human being do you have to be to do that?"

Tweets sent from trolls to Wing that included everything from threats to racial slurs to images of swastikas remained visible on Twitter hours after they were posted.

BuzzFeed and HuffPost both laid off substantial portions of its newsrooms this week. BuzzFeed said it would cut about 15 percent of its workforce, and layoffs began Friday. HuffPost's parent company, Verizon, promised to cut 7 percent of workers from its media division, and those layoffs began Thursday.

Talia Lavin, a freelance writer whose primary income was a political column for HuffPost before her editors were laid off this week, found 4chan threads with users bragging about "taunting them with my sock puppet Twitter."

"I'm gonna burn so many sock (puppet accounts), I can not help, but gloat to the max," one user wrote. Another user implored others to "hammer these [expletive] hard and tell them to learn to code."

Lavin was inundated with sexist and anti-semitic slurs, including one calling her "oven-ready," and outright threats on Twitter and Instagram, both as replies to tweets and direct messages. One troll even sent a taunting message to her PayPal account.

Lavin said she was able to identify the origins of the campaign because of the "uniformity of the responses," noting they all began with tweets of the same memes before using varied racial slurs and threats. She said she believes the social media companies could be more proactive in finding and taking down these accounts.

"It's particularly hard to police when it comes from other sites and migrates to another platform," said Lavin. "But use of the same phrase, lots of blocks (from users) in a short amount of time-these are clues."

A Twitter spokesperson told NBC News it's taking steps to prevent brigading, the process of coordinating a hate campaign on one site that is later deployed on targets on another site, that are targeting journalists on its platform.

"We are disheartened about the layoffs many journalists are facing right now and are working to prevent people coordinating on other services from making the situation worse. We are taking action on content that violates our rules and will continue to do so," the Twitter spokesperson said.

The death threat using Carlson's Photoshopped meme that was sent to Wing, for example, remains prevalent on troll sites like 4chan and on pages hosted by social media giants like Twitter and YouTube. The image was created by an account that frequently posts images about killing journalists on Gab, a social network that attracts mostly far-right users.

One YouTube video using the image as a thumbnail has over 17,000 views. Others linger in the replies of journalists' Twitter accounts.

"You never know how seriously to take these sorts of things, but it's not like attacks against the press are unprecedented," Wing said. "It hasn't even been that long since a gunman killed five journalists at a Maryland newsroom. The president continues to constantly attack the media, using language that these sorts of trolls now parrot ad infinitum."
