Norwegian Social Democrats Win Election. Populists Achieve Biggest Leap
DEREK VANBUSKIRK September 09, 202511:56 AM ET
Norway's Labor Party narrowly held onto power Monday, but the close call underscored major gains by the populist right.
Labor secured a second term by stitching together a bloc of center-left allies with 87 seats, just five more than the 82 captured by the right, according to Norwegian outlet VG.Though it fell short, the right added more than a dozen seats since 2021, when it was ousted from government with 68 after eight years in power.
The result gives Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St?re a second term after first winning in 2021. Labor, known as Arbeiderpartiet, is the largest party in the left bloc, while the right is anchored by the populist Progress Party, or Fremskrittspartiet.
"It is possible for the Social Democrats to win elections even when right-wing forces are on the rise in Europe," St?re said, according to VG.
Johannes Bergh, a national election expert at Norway's Institute for Social Research, told The Guardianthat cost of living, taxes and healthcare remain the dominant issues in the country's high-turnout elections.
He said the right carried momentum, but Labor benefited from the appointment of popular finance minister Jens Stoltenberg andSt?re's trade deal with President Donald Trump.
"There seems to be twoduelling trendsin Norwegian politics. One is a rightwing wave, especially around the young, and support for the sitting government," Bergh said.
With 99% of ballots counted, VG reported Labor's support rising 1.9%, while the Progress Party surged 12.3%.The Progress Party now holds 22.9% of the vote, its strongest showing ever, positioning it as the main opposition to Labor.
The Centre Party suffered the steepest drop, losing 7.9% nationwide, a decline analysts said likely fueled the Progress Party's gains, according to the outlet. The Conservative Party, the second-largest on the right, lost 5.7% of support, pointing to voters shifting within the bloc.
Progress Party leader Sylvi Listhaug and Conservative leader Erna Solberg both called St?re before midnight Monday to concede and offer congratulations.

Migrants Vastly Overrepresented in Norway Crime Stats
Figures from Statistics Norway show that migrants are vastly overrepresented in crimes, with younger migrants especially involved in violent crime and abuse in Oslo.
The figures were highlighted by Progressive Party members Sylvi Listhaug and Jon Helgheim, who revealed that young immigrant men from Somalia commit violent crime at a rate of 419 per 1,000 compared to 34 per 1,000 for native Norwegians.
The pair refute claims to the contrary made by NGOs, researchers, and others, stating that statistics in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden show that migrants are far overrepresented in violent crime even when factors such as gender, age, social status, and employment status are taken into consideration, Verdens Gang reports.
"The reason we are criticised is that it is troublesome for politicians, activists, researchers, and commentators to be awakened by unpleasant facts when they have intensely tried to close both eyes and ears long enough," the pair wrote.
The authors went on to describe the situation with migrant crime rates in Sweden, claiming that politicians and experts have "accepted that one should not talk about the problems because it can be stigmatising".
"Now the situation in Sweden is completely out of control with hundreds of car fires, hundreds of school fires, over a hundred bomb attacks, open street executions, and coordinated attacks with automatic weapons, bombs, and grenades," they said.
Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven has rejected claims that migration has anything to do with the surge in violent gang crime sweeping the country.
However, a recent report by Swedish newspaper Expressen revealed that all of the leaders of gangs committing violence in Stockholm were from migrant backgrounds.
The op-ed by the Progressive Party politicians also comes just under a year after Norwegian media reported that 70 per cent of the violent crime in Oslo was committed by immigrants, who make up just 33 per cent of the overall population.
