On Jan. 2, 2023, 49-year-old Craig Greenberg began his tenure as Louisville's newest mayor. A product of Ballard High School, the University of Michigan and Harvard Law School, more recently he was the CEO of 21c Museum Hotels, which he co-founded with Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson in 2006. While campaigning on Feb. 14, 2022, Greenberg survived an assassination attempt when local activist Quintez Brown fired three shots at him. A bullet pierced Greenberg's sweater, but he was physically unharmed.

A year and a day after that incident, Greenberg sat down with Community Managing Editor Andrew Adler to chat about how his Jewish values have helped shape his perspectives on life and politics. Below are excerpts from that conversation, lightly edited for length and clarity.

He was part of development projects downtown - with mixed success
Greenberg's work downtown wasn't always easy.

As a co-developer for 111 Whiskey Row, a rehabilitation project in downtown Louisville, Greenberg saw a project go up in flames in July 2015.

Three buildings were damaged and the side of one building collapsed in the blaze, The Courier Journal previously reported. The three-alarm fire was reportedly started by an accidental spark from an unattended construction worker's torch.

An even more egregious story from 1997 involves Jane Akre and Steve Wilson, TV journalists pressured by their employer, Tampa-based Fox affiliate WTVT, to alter a story on the use of recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) in dairy production and its potential health risks to consumers. Akre and Wilson said they were ordered by Fox executives to change the story by inserting statements from rBGH manufacturer Monsanto that they knew to be false. They claimed that they were fired after refusing to do so and threatening to report the station to the FCC.

They sued for wrongful termination, asserting that their firing violated Florida's whistleblower protection statute. A jury ruled in Akre's favor, awarding her $425,000 in damages.

In short, the court bought Fox's argument that there is no law to stop them from deliberately falsifying the news.

"False," of course, is often conditional and sometimes subjective. It's a standard that would be hard to enforce, subject to the whims and political ideas of judges and juries. And that's before you even get to the question of what news is, and what it means to practice journalism.

No, those are questions that can't be answered with any reasonable reliability. The best we can hope for is transparency, integrity, and accountability.

There is no licensing authority for journalists as there is for lawyers or doctors, but the Society of Professional Journalists puts forth a set of ethical standards, though it has no means to enforce them. First among them is: "Deliberate distortion is never permissible." It should go without saying, but there it is.

The rest of the standards touch on basic tenets of honesty (don't fabricate, mislead, deceive, silence opposing views), humanity (show compassion, respect and sensitivity to subjects who have undergone trying or traumatic events), and integrity (avoid conflicts of interest and disclose those that cannot be avoided).

That's not too much to ask, is it? Seek the truth as best you can determine it, go about it with candor and compassion, and do so "without fear or favor"-a phrase attributed to New York Times patriarch Adolph Ochs, conveying independence and impartiality.

It remains the controlling principle in most of the news media, but too often, editorial decisions are made that bring the entire profession into disrepute. And that harms not just the journalists, but the rest of us, too, as our discourse is steeped in distrust, cynicism and vitriol.

Maybe Canada is onto something.

An anti-fascist protester who was filmed harassing a woman claiming to be the widow of an NYPD cop killed in 9/11 earlier this month has been identified by the charity he worked for in a scathing statement announcing his firing.

Steve Wilson was caught on camera cursing at the woman and telling her that her husband deserved to 'rot in the grave' at the Patriot Prayer protest in Portland, Oregon, on October 13.
He started by calling her a 'f** snarky little idiot' because she was standing in front of him and he thought she was blocking him from walking across the street.
When the woman told him her husband died in 9/11, he said: 'Good for him.'
He carried on his tirade afterwards, labeling all NYPD cops 'sodomizing f** immigrants' and saying: 'Your f** husband should probably should f* rot in the grave'.
The woman has not been publicly named. Oregon Live reports that she may not be an NYPD widow and that there is no proof she was ever married to anyone who died in 9/11.
The newspaper did not name her but said they found no record of her ever living on the East Coast much less being married to anyone who died in 9/11.
As the video spread online last week, Wilson's identity remained a mystery.
A professional skateboarder who bears a striking resemblance to him was wrongly named as the person in the video and he had to fight to clear his name.
On Tuesday, Self Enhancement Inc, a non-profit organization supporting African-American youths, confirmed it was Wilson by announcing he had been fired over it.
'Steve Wilson is no longer an employee of SEI. His behavior does not represent the values of our organization or the high expectations we have for our employees,' the company said in a Twitter statement.
