BRUSSELS, July 14 (Reuters) - Belgian Foreign Minister and deputy premier Sophie Wilmes has resigned, the cabinet announced on Thursday, to take care of her husband, former Australian footballer Chris Stone, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Wilmes, who was Belgium's prime minister in 2019-20 and the first woman in that role, had already temporarily stepped down in April for the same reason, stating then that the situation would be re-evaluated during the summer.

Netherlands, Belgium Extradites Dozens of Russian Diplomats Accused of Espionage

Dutch and Belgian authorities are expelling 38 Russian diplomats after accusing them of engaging in espionage activities, the foreign affairs ministry in the Netherlands and Belgium announced on Tuesday.

Wopke Hoekstra, the Netherlands' minister of foreign affairs, said a total of 17 individuals, who were accredited as diplomats at the Russian representations in the Netherlands, were secretly working undercover in the country as intelligence officers.

The reason for the extradition is based on information collected by two Dutch intelligence services, AIVD and MIVD, which have put out warnings against Russian spies in the past, Hoekstra said in a statement.

The Russian ambassador was summoned on Tuesday and informed of the decision. The 17 diplomats have two weeks to leave the Netherlands and the decision cannot be appealed.

"These people have diplomat on their business card when they are actually doing something completely different," Hoekstra said, Dutch news agency NOS reported. He didn't further clarify in which kind of sector the espionage took place.

"We have made this decision for the sake of Dutch security," he added. "In the greatly changed context, with the war in Ukraine and the increasing Russian assertiveness."

Hoekstra noted that he assumes deporting these intelligence officers may have consequences, but the Dutch government is prepared for any retaliation by Moscow.

"Experience shows that Russia does not leave such measures unanswered," he said. "We cannot speculate on that, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is prepared for various scenarios that may occur in the near future."

Meanwhile, Belgium also decided to expel 21 Russian diplomats suspected of espionage.

Sophie Wilmes, Belgium's minister of foreign affairs, announced on Tuesday that 21 Russian diplomats have two weeks to leave the country, noting the move is not a sanction to Russia and is "only related to [Belgium's] national security."

'Hotel Rwanda' hero sentenced to 25 years on terror charges
The man who inspired the film "Hotel Rwanda" for saving hundreds of his countrymen from genocide was convicted of terrorism offenses Monday and sentenced to 25 years at a trial that human rights watchdogs and other critics of Rwanda's repressive government have described as an act of retaliation.
Paul Rusesabagina, credited with sheltering ethnic Tutsis during Rwanda's 1994 genocide and a recipient of the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, boycotted the announcement of the verdict after calling the trial a "sham."
The U.S. resident and Belgian citizen was convicted on eight charges including membership in a terrorist group, murder and abduction. He was charged along with 20 other people.
The circumstances surrounding Rusesabagina's arrest last year, his limited access to an independent legal team and his reported worsening health have drawn international concern for the 67-year-old who left Rwanda in 1996.
Rusesabagina, who remains in custody, has asserted that his arrest was in response to his criticism of longtime Rwandan President Paul Kagame over alleged human rights abuses. Kagame's government has repeatedly denied targeting dissenting voices with arrests and extrajudicial killings.
Monday's ruling comes more than a year after Rusesabagina disappeared during a visit to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and appeared days later in Rwanda in handcuffs, accused of supporting the armed wing of his opposition political platform, the Rwandan Movement for Democratic Change.
The armed group claimed some responsibility for attacks in 2018 and 2019 in southern Rwanda in which nine Rwandans died. Rusesabagina testified at trial that he helped to form the armed group to help refugees but said he never supported violence - and sought to distance himself from its deadly attacks.
Throughout, Rusesabagina has maintained that he is not guilty of the charges against him but said he didn't expect to get justice.
"We knew from the day he was kidnapped that the verdict would be 'guilty' on some or all of the false charges. We are happy that the charade of the trial is ending," Rusesabagina's family said in a statement.
A member of his legal team, Kate Gibson, added that "the only thing that has been surprising in watching this horror show unfold over the last year has been the brazenness and openness with which the Rwandan authorities have been willing to systematically violate all of the fair trial rights to which Paul was entitled."
Government spokeswoman Yolande Makolo tweeted shortly after the sentencing that the evidence against Rusesabagina was "indisputable."
"Rwandans will feel safer now justice has been delivered," Makolo wrote.
Rusesabagina's family alleges he was kidnapped and taken to Rwanda against his will to stand trial. But the court ruled that he wasn't kidnapped when he was tricked into boarding a chartered flight. Rwanda's government asserted that at the time he was going to Burundi to coordinate with armed groups based there and in Congo.
Rusesabagina said he was gagged and tortured before he was jailed, but Rwandan authorities denied that. His attorney, Felix Rudakemwa, has asserted that Rusesabagina's legal papers were confiscated by prison authorities. His family has feared he might die from poor health behind bars.
Amnesty International criticized the proceedings, noting that Rusesabagina was initially denied the right to choose his own lawyer. It added that Kagame's comments that "Rusesabagina had 'done something terribly wrong, committed a crime,' may have prejudiced the defendant's right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty."
U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said "the reported lack of fair trial guarantees calls into question the fairness of the verdict," and he urged Rwanda's government to examine "shortcomings" in the case, including Rusesabagina's reported lack of confidential, unimpeded access to his lawyers and case documents.
Belgium's foreign minister, Sophie Wilmes, said that "despite repeated appeals from Belgium, it must be concluded that Mr. Rusesabagina has not been given a fair and equitable trial." She said Belgium remained in close contact with him.
Rusesabagina is credited with saving more than 1,000 people by sheltering them at the hotel he managed during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda in which more than 800,000 Tutsi and Hutus who tried to protect them were killed.

Belgium's new justice minister has spoken of Jewish lobby

In February, when Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne was the Mayor of Kortrijk he tweeted that the "Jewish lobby is working extra hours. After Aalst, now Washington."

Belgium's newly sworn in center-left government has rattled the Jewish community because of its pro-Palestinian stance, its lack of emphasis on antisemitism and its appointment of a justice minister who has publicly spoken of the "Jewish lobby."

On Thursday, Alexander De Croo was sworn in as prime minister, replacing Sophie Wilmes, who had been the head of a caretaker government for the last 16 months.
Wilmes, who was the first Belgian Jewish prime minister, will be the foreign minister.
The new justice minister will be Vincent Van Quickenborne of the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats Party.

In February, when Van Quickenborne was the mayor of Kortrijk, he tweeted that the "Jewish lobby is working extra hours. After Aalst, now Washington."
It was not the first time Van Quickenborne had raised eyebrows. In 2002, he traveled to Gaza and met with Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Ismail Hassan Yassin.

"I am a bit anxious because I have seen a number of appointments that have raised eyebrows, and in some cases rightly so," said Yohan Benizri, president of the Belgian Federation of Jewish Organizations and vice president of the European Jewish Congress and the World Jewish Congress.

In the platform there was "no explicit mention of the fight against antisemitism" even though there is the ongoing issue of the Aalst carnival, he said, citing the annual carnival that has gained notoriety for its antisemitic costumes and floats.
The silence was striking when one takes into account the references in the platform to Israeli plans to annex portions of the West Bank, Benizri said. Religious freedom is also absent, he added.

Michael Freilich, a Jewish member of the Belgium Federal Parliament from the opposition New Flemish Alliance Party, also mentioned this platform.

The biggest threats to Europe and Belgium are from China and Russia, but those countries are not named in the platform while Israel is, he said.

Belgium's PM Sophie Wilmes has visited one of the nation's hospitals battling the pandemic - but the medical staff literally turned their backs on her to show that her "display of support" for frontline workers was not enough.

Prime Minister Wilmes faced a cold welcome at the Saint-Pierre hospital in the Belgian capital Brussels, where the doctors and nurses found a novel way to show their dissatisfaction with the government's policies amid the novel coronavirus epidemic. The nation has had one of the highest Covid-19 mortality rates in Europe.

Footage obtained by RT's video agency Ruptly shows dozens of medical specialists lining up in the hospital yard along the path of the prime minister's motorcade. The medics turn their backs to the cars in silence as soon as the vehicles would reach them.

Around 100 people, including nurses, doctors, logistical helpers as well as cleaning and administrative staff, took part in the protest, according to the local media, which quickly dubbed the action a "guard of dishonor."

The medics and support staff have been dissatisfied with healthcare budget cuts and low salaries. Their anger has been especially fueled by a recent government decree allowing involuntary requisition of medical personnel - meaning that medics could be summoned to work or moved elsewhere whenever the authorities deem necessary.
