Brazilian BOMBSHELL: Mounting Evidence Ties Criminal Syndicate's Plan to Murder Senator Moro to President Lula - Moro Was the Judge Who Sent Lula to Prison
Brazilian politics can sometimes be confusing to the outsider - but this story is actually quite simple. It goes like this: the men who tried to kill Lula's worst enemy are from a criminal faction tied to Lula's party, had a Lula-related email on their phone, and one of them once even used the same lawyer as one of Lula's sons.
First-term Senator S?rgio Moro was the Federal Judge that convicted Lula and sent him to prison for corruption charges. 3 years later, Lula was freed by a controversial decision by the Supreme Court, and won another presidential mandate in a highly disputed election.
Conex?o Pol?tica reports:
'In a mega-operation launched this Wednesday morning (22), the Federal Police took to the streets to arrest members of the First Command of the Capital (PCC), one of the largest criminal factions in the country.
Investigations by the agency point out that the criminals intended to kidnap and kill Senator Sergio Moro (Uni?o Brasil-PR), a former Lava Jato judge.
[...] In all, around 120 police officers serve 21 search and seizure warrants, seven of which are for preventive arrest and four for temporary arrest in the states of S?o Paulo, Paran?, Mato Grosso do Sul and Rond?nia.'
The 'operation Sequaz' has so far arrested 9 people involved in the plan to kill Senator Sergio Moro, that cost about R$ 5 million.
'[...] Criminals from the faction rented residential and commercial properties near Moro addresses in Curitiba. The bandits photographed the family's daily life: school, gym, shopping in malls and work meetings.'
Lula and his Workers' Party (PT) have long and credibly been reported to maintain close ties with the largest Brazilian criminal faction, the PCC. Fuelling the suspicions against Lula is also the fact that he openly spoke to the press just days earlier about his time in prison during which he had one goal:
"Once in a while a lawyer would come, [...] to visit, to see if everything was all right. [...] I would answer: 'It's not okay, it will only be okay when I f*ck this Moro'."

Brazil: Socialist Lula Disavows Support from Satanic Sorcerers, Says He's Never Made a Deal with the Devil
Socialist ex-president of Brazil Luiz In?cio Lula da Silva's team has launched a campaign insisting that the presidential frontrunner is a Christian and has not made any deals with Satan following the widespread sharing of social media videos appearing to show Satanists casting spells to win him this month's election.
Lula's team reportedly asked the nation's top court, the Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF), on Tuesday to censor any content linking the candidate to Satan.
Simultaneously, current Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a conservative Christian whose family is both Evangelical and Catholic, is denying his own accusations of devil worship following the resurgence of a video in which, in 2017, Bolsonaro addressed a Masonic lodge.
Bolsonaro and Lula are caught in a tight race for the presidency, to be decided in an election on October 30. In the first round of voting on Sunday, Lula, who served as president between 2003 and 2011, received 48 percent of the vote, the most of any candidate. In Brazil, to win the presidency with one round of voting, a candidate must receive over 50 percent of the vote. Since Lula did not meet that requirement, he will appear on a ballot with only one other candidate: Bolsonaro, who received 43 percent of the vote.
The results of Sunday's election shocked the Brazilian left, which expected Lula to defeat Bolsonaro by as many as 14 points. Polls published days before voting suggested that Lula could receive 51 percent of the vote, ending the election and becoming president again. In reality, the five-percent difference between the two candidates leaves the next round of voting open for either candidate to win, as the third and fourth place candidates received seven percent of the votes combined.
According to CNN Brasil, videos began circulating on the Chinese platform Tiktok this week in which an individual who identified as a satanist expressed support for Lula da Silva's presidential campaign. That initial video followed the publication of other social media posts and chatter shared by Bolsonaro supporters and those close to his campaign. Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the president's son, shared one video on Twitter that appeared to show a witchcraft ritual to aid Lula, whose original poster shared with the caption, "satanists are in desperation mode."
According to CNN, attorneys associated with the coalition supporting Lula's Workers' Party (PT) have formally requested the STF censor publications associating Lula with Satan worship, claiming they are "fake news." The attorneys are particularly contesting a video in which an alleged satanist appears to support Lula on the grounds that, in a separate video on Tiktok, the same individual appears to criticize the candidate.
The STF has been highly favorable to Lula, who appointed three of the 11 sitting justices, in the months and years preceding the election. The STF's intervention is the only reason Lula is allowed to legally run for president, as he was convicted of using taxpayers' dollars to buy a luxury property during his presidency in 2017. Last year, the STF overturned the conviction on the grounds that the judge presiding over the case, Sergio Moro, was biased. Moro won a congressional seat for his state, Paran?, on Sunday and has since endorsed Bolsonaro.
In yet another religious controversy, conservatives online condemned Lula for remarks in 2016 in which he compared himself to Jesus.
"I am speaking as an outraged citizen. I have a known public history. Only Jesus Christ can beat me in Brazil," Lula said at the time, vowing to run for president again despite being charged with criminal corrupt behavior.
Brazilian outlets have defended Lula by claiming that detractors are now saying that Lula claimed he could defeat Jesus in a Brazilian election, when in reality he claimed Jesus is the only candidate that may stand a chance.
The Lula campaign has separately flooded social media with a barrage of content affirming the former president's Christianity.
"Lula believes in God and is Christian. Lula does not have a pact and has never had a conversation with the devil," a post on Instagram by the account "Lula for Truth," run by the campaign, asserted.

clowns working against Lula:
White House admits CIA involvement in "War on Corruption" which jailed Lula and elected Bolsonaro
In a White House 'Background Press Call by Senior Administration Officials on the Fight Against Corruption', a Biden administration official admitted that the CIA and other parts of the U.S. intelligence apparatus were involved in assisting the "War on Corruption" which jailed former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and elected Jair Bolsonaro.
The admission will come as an embarrassment to a media who has for the most part omitted, minimised or denied U.S. involvement in anti-corruption actions across Latin America, despite it being a matter of public record for years.
In July 2017, Acting Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Blanco gave a speech at NATO think tank the Atlantic Council in which he bragged of the Justice Department's informal involvement in Brazilian anti-corruption operation Lava Jato and its prosecution of former president Lula. FBI personnel involved later boasted that it had "toppled presidents".
Lava Jato prosecutor Deltan Dellagnol described Lula's 2018 arrest which kept him out of the election he was on course to win, as "a gift from the CIA".
The judge who prosecuted Lula, Sergio Moro, became Bolsonaro's Justice Minister, and both made an unprecedented visit to CIA headquarters in Langley within months of taking office, whilst the DOJ rewarded the Lava Jato task-force with a $682 million dollar kickback. Lava Jato's origins can be traced back to 2008/09, where Moro and a blueprint for an operation of its type appear in State Department cables.
Moro is now under investigation for 7 counts of judicial bias, in working to help oust president Dilma Rousseff, jail candidate Lula da Silva, and elect his opponent Bolsonaro, with the assistance of the U.S. government.

Brazil's ex-president to challenge 'criminal' Bolsonaro
Lula de Silva will run in Brazil's presidential election, and vows to send "fascism back to the sewer of history"
Former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva - known simply as Lula - announced on Saturday that he will run in October's presidential election, facing off against the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro. While Lula leads Bolsonaro in opinion polls, he has recently earned notoriety in the West for his stance on the Ukraine conflict.
"We're ready to work not only to win the election on October 2, but to rebuild and transform Brazil, which will be even more difficult," the former union leader told a rally in Sao Paulo. "We need to return to a place where no one ever dares to defy democracy again. We need to send fascism back to the sewer of history, where it should have been all along."
A leftist, Lula has said that he will ally with center-left parties, and has chosen centrist former Sao Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin as a running mate, in a bid to peel moderate voters away from Bolsonaro, whom he described on Saturday as an "authoritarian" and an "irresponsible" "criminal."
However, Lula himself was until recently on the wrong side of the law. After governing Brazil between 2003 and 2010 and leaving office with an approval rating of 80%,Lula was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2017 for alleged involvement in a corruption and money laundering scheme within the state-run oil company Petrobras. The sentence was later increased to 12 years.
Lula maintained his innocence and told RT in 2018 that there was "a conspiracy in Brazil between the media, the judiciary, the prosecution service and police" against him. Brazil's Supreme Federal Court eventually agreed and struck down his conviction in 2021, ruling that former judge Sergio Moro, who oversaw the investigation against Lula and was later appointed justice minister, had no jurisdiction to prosecute the former president.
Following the annulment, it was widely assumed that Lula, who is 76, would launch another run for office. Opinion polling placed him comfortably ahead of Bolsonaro for several months, although that lead has shrunk, and Lula now leads the incumbent right-winger by 40% to 35%.
On the international stage, Lula has rattled the West on two significant issues: last week he proposed the creation of a common Latin American currency to break the dominance of the US dollar, and in an interview with Time magazine several days later, he declared Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "as responsible as [Russian President Vladimir] Putin for the war."
Lula went on to blame NATO expansion for antagonizing Russia, and condemned Western leaders for encouraging and arming Zelensky to continue fighting Russia's forces.
Amid an outcry from Western journalists, Mikhail Podolyak, an advisor to Zelensky, responded by accusing Lula of spreading "Russian attempts to distort the truth."
Bolsonaro's position on the Ukraine conflict is not vastly different from that of Lula. The Brazilian leader has refused to take sides on the war, and has rejected claims that Russia has carried out massacres in Ukraine.

CIA Director Makes Secret Visit To Crumbling Bolsonaro Government
Background: Shortly after taking office, Jair Bolsonaro became the first Brazilian leader to visit CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. He was accompanied by his Justice Minister Sergio Moro who had jailed main opponent Lula da Silva before the 2018 election, on now annulled charges. As a result, US-trained Moro now faces Supreme Court investigation for Judicial bias. Prosecutors from the now disgraced joint US-Brazil anti-corruption operation Lava Jato called Lula's prosecution "a gift from the CIA". The White House recently admitted that the CIA was involved in its "fight against corruption" in Latin America, which effectively brought Bolsonaro to power.
William J. Burns, director of US intelligence agency the CIA, is currently visiting Brazilian capital Brasília, where he will be meeting government officials such as Government Secretary, General Luiz Eduardo Ramos, and the powerful head of Institutional Security, General Augusto Heleno.
On the 29th June, Burns was in Colombia, according to the Colombian ambassador in Washington, Francisco Santos, Burns' arrival is the result of three previous meetings with the CIA to clarify "what is happening in the country".
This week, United States President Joe Biden, announced on June 28 (1 day before the arrival of the CIA director in Colombia) his support for negotiations promoted in conjunction with the international community, regarding the forthcoming elections in Colombia, where leftist Gustavo Petro currently leads opinion polls.
The president of the United States received a call from his Colombian counterpart, Iván Duque, where he shared his concern about the situation in Venezuela and its regional impact.
According to the Colombian Foreign Ministry, the presidents spoke about economic reactivation and employment, the global climate change agenda, shared values ??in the area of ??democracy and human rights, as well as the importance of effectively confronting common threats in terms of regional security and transnational crime.
Furthermore, Biden reportedly expressed his concern about the situation in Venezuela and its regional impact, and highlighted the importance of seeking an international consensus for "free and fair elections".
Burns' visit to Brazil raises questions about his objectives in the country. The visit of the CIA chief was confidential and was not known in advance. Officially speaking, there is no information in Bolsonaro's agenda about a meeting with the American official. There are concerns that the CIA director's visit is happening just 2 days before the 3J protests, where hundreds of thousands of Brazilians are expected take to the streets to demand the removal of far-right president Bolsonaro, who came to power with United States' support.
Appointed as CIA director by Joe Biden on March 18, Burns was also one of the heads of the commission that negotiated the 2015 Nuclear Agreement with Iran during the Obama-Biden administration.

Brazil Dismantles Anti-Corruption Task Force Behind Lava Jato
After having sent nearly 280 people to jail and having retrieved some US$800 million to state coffers, Brazilian prosecutors dismantled last week the so-called Car Wash Task Force that handled the largest anti-corruption probe in the history of the country.
Lava Jato BrazilBrazilian prosecutors dismantled the so-called Car Wash (Lava Jato) Task Force. (Photo: Wikimedia)The probe began nearly seven years ago in Curitiba, a city in southern Brazil away from the local power centers. The operation initially looked into a series of illicit transactions linked to a car wash called Lava Jato in the country's capital. However, it rapidly evolved into a complex bribing scheme involving the state's oil company Petrobras and the largest political parties.
The investigation shook both Brazilian and Latin American politics and sent to prison four Presidents, including Brazil's Luis Inacio 'Lula' da Silva. It also exposed the tentacles of white-collar corruption across the region and prompted other countries to carry out their own probes.
According to a statement from the Attorney General's Office, the nine members that formed the task force were reassigned to Gaeco, a unit fighting organized crime in Brazil. Four prosecutors will continue to pursue investigations related to Lava Jato, while the remaining five will engage in other procedures.
Since March 2014, the task force has carried out 1,450 search and seizure warrants and collected evidence against 533 defendants, resulting in 278 convictions, read the statement.
The probe additionally had two investigations: Operation Pilot, which revealed in 2018 a money laundering and bribery scheme across Latin America linked to the construction group Odebrecht, and the Integration Operation, which looked into the systematic payment of bribes by Parana toll concessionaires.
"The legacy of the Lava Jato Task Force is undeniable and commendable considering the advances we have made in discussing such important and costly issues to Brazilian society. However, there is still a lot of work," said Alessandro José de Oliveira, coordinator of the Lava Jato unit at Gaeco.
The task force comes to an end a year and a half after a leak showed conversations suggesting that Sergio Moro, the former Brazilian justice minister and the judge who jailed Lula Da Silva, did not act impartially.
In August last year, President Jair Bolsonaro said he did not want to end the Lava Jato operation, but eventually he did "because there isn't any corruption" to be investigated in his government.
OCCRP recently named Bolsonaro the 2020 Person of the Year for his role in promoting organized crime and corruption. The Brazilian President's links to corrupt figures, the use of propaganda to push a populist agenda, his attacks against the justice system and his continual destruction of the Amazon made him worthy of the unflattering title.

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro's senator son Flávio charged with laundering money
Flávio Bolsonaro and 16 others were charged on October 19, according to a statement the public prosecutors' office posted to its website on Wednesday. Prosecutors allege the senator had people on his government-funded payroll who were not required to work and who had to return part of their salaries to him. The senator denied having committed any crime and said he was confident that courts would not accept the charge, according to a message he posted on his verified Instagram account. The accusation is "inviable because it is devoid of any hint of proof. It's nothing more than a macabre and badly engineered tale," one of his four lawyers, Rodrigo Roca, said in a statement.
Prosecutors say the alleged scam lasted between 2007 and 2018. The senator's father, Jair Bolsonaro, was elected President in 2018 on a wave of anti-corruption sentiment and with promises to root out crime. His crimefighting bona fides have faced scepticism in light of the investigation into his son, as well as the resignation of his former justice minister, Sergio Moro, who quit and alleged the President had sought to intervene inappropriately in the federal police. Prosecutors also charged Fabrício Queiroz, Senator Bolsonaro's former driver, who was arrested in June. Mr Queiroz is a longtime friend of the President, who last year said the two had not spoken since the allegations surfaced. Police found Mr Queiroz hiding out at a home belonging to a man who was previously a lawyer for both the President and Senator Bolsonaro.

Brazil. Almost 100 Officers Publish Letter Warning Of Civil War
A letter signed by almost 100 military personnel of the Army's reserve forces (the vast majority colonels who graduated from the military academy in the early 1970's) was sent to the head of the Office of Institutional Security (GSI - responsible for the national intelligence agency), General Augusto Heleno, in which they warned of the imminent risk of 'civil war' in Brazil and expressed their absolute support for and loyalty to their former commander. According to a report published by Resumen Latinoamericano on 24 May, the letter was first reported at the UOL portal, a Brazilian news agency
This has occurred as legal and political pressure continue to build on Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is facing calls for his impeachment by the Congress or indictment by the courts. Although the president can still count on the active support of his core constituency (accounting for around 30% of Brazilians), and most of the larger political parties in the Congress remain reluctant to commit themselves one way or the other over impeachment proceedings, the proportion of Brazilians who disapprove of his presidency has risen steadily and is now over 50% and the formal requests for his impeachment are multiplying.
The resignation of Justice Minister Sergio Moro last month, in part at least on the basis that the president intervened in the management of the Federal Police in order to protect his children from legal and judicial investigations, has been a particularly damaging development for the president. After dismissing the director-general of the Federal Police, Bolsonaro then attempted to appoint a close family friend as director-general, a measure which the Supreme Federal Tribunal has provisionally suspended. Moro's allegations resulted in the opening of a judicial investigation against the president. The magistrate with primary responsibility for the case, Celso de Mello, must also determine the validity of a request that the Chamber of Deputies begin an impeachment proceeding against the president.
The magistrate also ordered the release of a video of a Cabinet meeting in which Bolsonaro describes his reasons for intervening in the management of the Federal Police. The release of the video has sent shockwaves throughout the State and Brazilian society more generally, and was probably the trigger event for the letter sent by the military officers to Heleno.

Brazil's Justice System Success: More Criminals Behind Bars
"In 2019, more criminals went to prison than were released. In 2018, it was the opposite," says the minister of justice and public security
Spanish - Fighting crime was the promise that led Jair Bolsonaro to the presidency of Brazil. To achieve this, he chose as his minister of justice and public security the judge who dismantled the largest network of state corruption, which ended with the resignation of Dilma Roussef and the imprisonment of Lula da Silva. Now Sergio Moro is celebrating that in the first year of the administration, there were more criminals in prison than released, thanks to the Anti-Crime Law.
"Following the guidance of President Jair Bolsonaro, we are being firm in dealing with organized crime, isolating leaders in federal prisons. In 2019, more criminals were put in jail than were released. In 2018, it had been the opposite," the minister of justice and public security said, explaining the steep fall in crime in Brazil last year.

Sergio Moro: Brazil prosecutor requests Bolsonaro
'meddling' probe
"Brazil's top public prosecutor has requested clearance to investigate allegations of political interference by President Jair Bolsonaro.
It comes after Justice Minister Sergio Moro resigned on Friday, accusing the president of wanting to install a new federal police chief who would provide him with intelligence reports.
Mr Bolsonaro denies the allegation.
The row has thrown his administration into turmoil as it struggles to address the coronavirus crisis.
Bolsonaro fires health minister over coronavirus
'Undocumented virus explosion' sweeps Brazil
Brazil has nearly 55,000 confirmed cases of the virus and more than 3,700 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University in the US.
Earlier this month, the president sacked his Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta for his response to the coronavirus pandemic. The minister had advocated social distancing, which Mr Bolsonaro has scorned."

Earlier on Friday, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro sacked the chief of the federal police Mauricio Valeixo, appointed by Justice Minister Sergio Moro. The minister reportedly warned that he would step down if could not choose the successor for the federal police head himself.
Brazilian Justice Minister Sergio Moro is set to announce his resignation in a public address at 11 a.m. Brazilian time, Reuters reported citing a source familiar with the matter.
The minister has been engaged in a dispute with President Bolsonaro over his intention to replace the chief of Brazil's federal police, whom he dismissed earlier in the day. The president did not give any official reason regarding police chief Mauricio Valeixo's sacking.

documents leaked in June 2019 to Glenn Greenwald at The Intercept suggest that Judge Sergio Moro may have been partial in his decisions,[19] passing on 'advice, investigative leads, and inside information to the prosecutors'[20] to 'prevent Lula's Workers' Party from winning' the 2018 elections.[21] Several top jurisprudence authorities and experts in the world have reacted to the leaks by describing former President Lula as a political prisoner and calling for his release.[22][23] Da Silva was ultimately released on November 8, 2019.

'Brazilian authorities are seeking to bring charges against Glenn Greenwald, the journalist who published Edward Snowden's intelligence agency leaks.
Mr Greenwald has been accused of "helping guiding and encouraging" a criminal group that hacked into the phones of Brazilian officials.
The journalist had recently published stories describing private messages between public prosecutors.
At this point, federal public prosecutors have proposed the charges.
However, a judge still needs to decide whether to formally indict him.
Six other individuals have also been accused of illegal telephone interceptions and conspiracy among other related crimes.
Brazilian prosecutors allege that, during his interactions with the group, Mr Greenwald advised its members to delete messages that they had passed on to him.
Mr Greenwald has not yet publicly responded to this particular allegation.
Last year, Mr Greenwald and colleagues published a series of ten investigative reports on news site The Intercept, which detailed "a massive trove of previously undisclosed materials" allegedly by Brazilian prosecutors and other officials.
They quoted from messages that had been sent via Telegram, a privacy-focused app that claims to be able to keep "messages safe from hacker attacks".
The Folha newspaper said that those whose accounts had allegedly been breached included justice minister Sergio Moro and prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol, who is coordinating Operation Car Wash - a probe into the country's biggest ever corruption scandal.
'I'll keep working'
After details of the accusations against him were published, Mr Greenwald issued a statement via The Daily beast news site. In it, he noted that Brazil's Supreme Court had ruled last year that the administration should drop its investigation into him because it violated his press freedom rights.
"Less than two months ago, the federal police, examining all the same evidence cited by the public ministry, stated explicitly that not only have I never committed any crime but that I exercised extreme caution as a journalist never even to get close to any participation," he added.
"We will not be intimidated by these tyrannical attempts to silence journalists.
"I am working right now on new reporting and will continue to do so."
The New York-based Freedom of the Press Foundation has described the Brazilian attorney general office's actions as being "beyond disturbing" and an "outrageous violation of press freedom".
Edward Snowden, who was granted asylum by Russia after he fled the United States in 2013, tweeted his reaction to the news.
"Absolute red alert: This is unbelievably naked retaliation for revealing extreme corruption at the highest levels of [Brazilian President] Bolsonaro's administration and an existential threat to investigative journalism in Brazil," he wrote.
Last year, President Bolsonaro commented in public that he thought Mr Greenwald could face legal repercussions in Brazil over his reporting activities.
Following news of the allegations levelled at Mr Greenwald, Eduardo Bolsonaro - the president's son and an MP - tweeted: "Glenn Greenwald always said he loved Brazil and wanted to get to know the country in-depth. Maybe he will get to know [one of Brazil's] jails..."'

Brazilian Court Re-Confirms Lula's Charges, Hikes Prison Term to 17 Years Ahead of Appeal
A Brazilian court confirmed the charges and increased the sentence by five years for former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was released from prison earlier this month by the country's Supreme Court.
Lula was freed by the Brazilian Supreme Court on November 8 on the grounds that it was unconstitutional to have imprisoned a defendant who was still attempting to appeal his conviction. The 74-year-old former president and co-founder of the Workers Party had sat in prison for 19 months by that point.
However, a regional court in Porto Alegre confirmed his sentence on Wednesday, raising the punishment by another five years to a total of 17 years and one month in prison if his appeals fail, AP reported. Lula's legal defense team had asked the court to annul the sentence.
"I know I will live a life of much struggle going forward. But who knows who is innocent is not afraid to fight," Lula tweeted Wednesday, following the court proceedings from Sao Paulo. "I will win every lawsuit against me by exposing their lies. My innocence is proven in the case file. They have no proof, what they have is a thesis: that Lula cannot be released."
Lula served as the country's president from 2003 until 2010. He was first imprisoned in April 2018 following his conviction for corruption and money laundering connected to his alleged purchase of beachfront property in the Sao Paulo state. The charges arose as part of the Lava Jato (Car Wash) corruption probe, which also targeted other members of the Workers Party, including then-President Dilma Roussef, Lula's successor, who was removed from power in August 2016 in what many termed a "soft coup."
Lula sought the presidency once more in the 2018 elections, but was disqualified by the Electoral Court just months before the vote, leaving no meaningful opposition to right-wing candidate Jair Bolsonaro of the Social Liberal Party, who swept the polls that October.
In June 2019, The Intercept published leaked documents showing that while he was still a judge, Justice Minister Sergio Moro had influenced Lula's trial by coordinating an anti-Lula media strategy with state prosecutors.

I wasn't happy about the refusal to invite President Trump to speak at the commencement but context. This was right at the time a special counsel was being appointed. However, the following year, Judge Sergio Moro was invited as the commencement speaker. Judge Moro IS doing the same type of work to clean up corruption in Brazil. Greenwald calls Brazil's Bolsonaro a 'wannabe dictator' after threats of 'jail' for explosive leaks
The award-winning journalist has called Brazilian President a 'wannabe dictator' after Jair Bolsonaro threatened him with a jail term amid a scandal surrounding the nation's justice minister sparked by The Intercept reports.
Amid rumors that Glenn Greenwald could face deportation under a new government decree, Bolsonaro stated that "he will not be kicked out" - but instead might "do jail time in Brazil." The decree, issued by Justice Minister Sergio Moro, allows summary expulsion of people accused of unconstitutional acts or deemed a danger to the "security of Brazil."
Bolsonaro said nothing about the charges that could land the reporter in prison, though. Instead, he attacked Greenwald's choice of life partner, claiming that the journalist might have engaged in a relationship with a Brazilian citizen only to avoid deportation.
"Trickster, trickster, to avoid such a problem [of deportation], he marries another trickster and adopts a child in Brazil," Bolsonaro said. "That is the problem we have. He will not leave."

PEPE ESCOBAR: Brazilgate is Turning into Russiagate 2.0
The Intercept's bombshell about Brazilian corruption is being ludicrously spun by the country's media and military as a "Russian conspiracy," writes Pepe Escobar
It was a leak, not a hack. Yes: Brazilgate, unleashed by a series of game-changing bombshells published by The Intercept, may be turning into a tropical Russiagate.
The Intercept's Deep Throat - an anonymous source - has finally revealed in detail what anyone with half a brain in Brazil already knew: that the judicial/lawfare machinery of the one-sided Car Wash anti-corruption investigation was in fact a massive farce and criminal racket bent on accomplishing four objectives.
Create the conditions for the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff in 2016 and the subsequent ascension of her VP, elite-manipulated puppet, Michel Temer.
Justify the imprisonment of former president Lula in 2018 - just as he was set to win the latest presidential election in a landslide.
Facilitate the ascension of the Brazilian extreme-right via Steve Bannon asset (he calls him "Captain") Jair Bolsonaro.
Install former judge Sergio Moro as a justice minister on steroids capable of enacting a sort of Brazilian Patriot Act - heavy on espionage and light on civil liberties.
Moro, side by side with prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol, who was leading the Public Ministry's 13-strong task force, are the vigilante stars of the lawfare racket. Over the past four years, hyper-concentrated Brazilian mainstream media, floundering in a swamp of fake news, duly glorified these two as Captain Marvel-worthy national heroes. Hubris finally caught up with the swamp.
The Brazilian Goodfellas
The Intercept has promised to release all the files in its possession; chats, audio, videos and pics, a treasure trove allegedly larger than Snowden's. What has been published so far reveals Moro/Dallagnol as a strategic duo in synch, with Moro as a capo di tutti i capi, judge, jury and executioner rolled into one - replete with serial fabrications of evidence. This, in itself, is enough to nullify all the Car Wash cases in which he was involved - including Lula's prosecution and successive convictions based on "evidence" that would never hold up in a serious court.

Hidden Plot
Exclusive: Brazil's Top Prosecutors Who Indicted Lula Schemed in Secret Messages to Prevent His Party From Winning 2018 Election
An enormous trove of secret documents reveals that Brazil's most powerful prosecutors, who have spent years insisting they are apolitical, instead plotted to prevent the Workers' Party, or PT, from winning the 2018 presidential election by blocking or weakening a pre-election interview with former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva with the explicit purpose of affecting the outcome of the election.
The massive archive, provided exclusively to The Intercept, shows multiple examples of politicized abuse of prosecutorial powers by those who led the country's sweeping Operation Car Wash corruption probe since 2014. It also reveals a long-denied political and ideological agenda. One glaring example occurred 10 days before the first round of presidential voting last year, when a Supreme Court justice granted a petition from the country's largest newspaper, Folha de São Paulo, to interview Lula, who was in prison on corruption charges brought by the Car Wash task force.
Immediately upon learning of that decision on September 28, 2018, the team of prosecutors who handled Lula's corruption case - who spent years vehemently denying that they were driven by political motives of any kind - began discussing in a private Telegram chat group how to block, subvert, or undermine the Supreme Court decision. This was based on their expressed fear that the decision would help the PT - Lula's party - win the election. Based on their stated desire to prevent the PT's return to power, they spent hours debating strategies to prevent or dilute the political impact of Lula's interview.

Exclusive: Leaked Chats Between Brazilian Judge and Prosecutor Who Imprisoned Lula Reveal Prohibited Collaboration and Doubts Over Evidence
A large trove of documents furnished exclusively to The Intercept Brasil reveals serious ethical violations and legally prohibited collaboration between the judge and prosecutors who last year convicted and imprisoned former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on corruption charges - a conviction that resulted in Lula being barred from the 2018 presidential election. These materials also contain evidence that the prosecution had serious doubts about whether there was sufficient evidence to establish Lula's guilt.
The archive, provided to The Intercept by an anonymous source, includes years of internal files and private conversations from the prosecutorial team behind Brazil's sprawling Operation Car Wash, an ongoing corruption investigation that has yielded dozens of major convictions, including those of top corporate executives and powerful politicians.

The Bolivian "Sergio Moro" Aspires to the Presidency
Oscar Ortiz, the opposition Senator who has overseen investigations into misuse of state funds, has announced he will challenge Evo Morales for the presidency.
In Bolivia, with a judicial system controlled by the Evo Morales regime, it would have been impossible for large corruption cases to be investigated independently, as occurred in Brazil with the famous prosecutor Sergio Moro.
Subscribe to our daily newsletter
The man who took responsibility for investigating such cases was the opposition Senator Oscar Ortiz, using the powers of parliamentary oversight, and calling the implicated officials to appear and testify before the chamber.
In these investigations, the case of the Peasant Indigenous Fund (Fondioc) stood out; a case in which millions of dollars were diverted to the personal accounts of trade union leaders of Morales' ruling Movement Towards Socialism political party, money that in theory should have been earmarked for the development of rural communities.

Even more outrageous: Fascist Bolsonaro visited the CIA with Sergio Moro, the ex-judge who led Op. Car Wash, who waged lawfare against the Workers' Party by using bogus "corruption" charges to arrest Lula and imprison Dilma.
Bolsonaro rewarded Moro by making him justice minister

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has sent 300 soldiers to the northern city of Fortaleza with orders to stop a surge in criminal attacks targeting banks, buses and shops, according to France24.

By the end of the weekend, 300 soldiers will be patrolling that city and other towns in Ceara state in a bid to halt the rampage, national public security secretary Guilherme Teophilo said, according to government news agency Agencia Brasil.
The intervention is the first test of new President Jair Bolsonaro's strict law-and-order platform since he took office last Tuesday.
His justice minister ordered the deployment after concluding that Ceara police were overwhelmed. Some 50 suspects have been arrested. -France24
The gangs attacking Fortaleza have been seen on security footage torching gas stations, while dozens of attacks were registered this week as frightened residents stay indoors - leaving the main roads deserted.

- Gustavo carneiro CRVG (@gustavocrvgg) January 5, 2019
In one of the attacks, explosives left a road supporting pillar badly damaged in the town of Caucaia, just west of Fortaleza.
While the exact cause of the surge in violence is unknown, intelligence reports published by Brazilian media have pointed to gangs revolting against tough new rules recently instituted throughout the state's prisons, which include blocking cell phone signals and ending the separation of inmates based on gang affiliation.
To protest the measures, two gangs have set aside their rivalry to join forces against the government according to G1 News, citing security officials.
Earlier this month, Bolsonaro vowed to crack down on his country's out-of-control crime by offering immunity to soldiers and police using lethal force, while also easing gun laws with a decree which would make it much easier for adults over 25 to obtain firearms, as long as they have no criminal record. Bolsonaro says that allowing "good" people to own guns will discourage criminals, as well as reduce Brazil's homicide rate after nearly 64,000 murders last year.
In Rio de Janeiro, police have been sent into the city's slums to kill violent gun-toting criminals, according to Flavio Pacca - a longtime associate and security adviser to Governor-elect Wilson Witzel.
"The protocol will be to immediately neutralize, slaughter anyone who has a rifle," said Witzel - a former Brazilian marine and federal judge, on December 12. "Whoever has a rifle isn't worried about other people's lives, they're ready to eliminate anyone who crosses their path. This is a grave problem, not just in Rio de Janeiro, but in other states."
The 63-year-old Bolsonaro - a former paratrooper, has made "restoring order" central to his four-year mandate.
Much of that task falls to his justice minister, Sergio Moro, a former star judge who headed up Operation Car Wash, an investigation into Brazil's biggest-ever corruption scandal.
Bolsonaro on Friday praised Moro's decision to send in troops as "apt, rapid and effective."
Ceara's governor belongs to the leftwing Workers Party which was driven into opposition by the election of Bolsonaro and his ultraconservative allies.
Brazil has the third biggest prison population in the world, behind the United States and China, with nearly 73,000 inmates as of 2016. Penitentiaries are overcrowded and prey to gangs that often viciously turn on each other.
The three gangs active in Ceara are the Red Command (CV by its initials in Portuguese) that grew out of organized criminal activity in Rio de Janeiro, the First Command of the Capital (PCC) based in Sao Paulo, and a group called the Guardians of the State (GDE). -France24
Of those groups, the CV and PCC have teamed up in a "non-aggression" pact in order to fight against the government.
The 300 troops sent to northern Brazil will have a large job ahead of them - as nearly 80 attacks were reported in towns across Ceara state last week - an area which is larger than Costa Rica or Croatia in terms of ground to cover.

Brazil's new far-right government issues decrees across sectors
BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil's new President Jair Bolsonaro set to work quickly on Wednesday, with his administration issuing decrees affecting the economy, agriculture and society, while forging closer political ties with the United States. Bolsonaro, a former army captain and seven-term congressman, won elections in October and was sworn in on Tuesday as Brazil's first far-right president since a military dictatorship gave way to civilian rule in 1985.
Fulfilling a campaign promise to his staunch supporters in the farm sector, Bolsonaro decreed that indigenous land claims, a source of bloody clashes on Brazil's agricultural frontier, would be decided by the Agriculture Ministry. The gift to the powerful agribusiness sector enraged environmentalists already worried by Bolsonaro's plans to loosen protections of the Amazon rainforest and remove Brazil's support for the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The new president was elected on a platform to clean up Brazilian politics, and he put the country's top anti-corruption figure, Sergio Moro, in charge of a Justice Ministry beefed up to fight graft and battle organized crime. Moro, a former federal judge who spearheaded the "Car Wash" corruption trials that put former leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and other high-profile politicians in jail, said on Wednesday he would help usher in a new era of law-and-order. "The top mission given to me by the president was clear: end impunity for corruption cases and combat organized crime to reduce violent crimes," Moro said after being sworn in. The administration would propose an ambitious anti-crime bill to Congress next month that would stiffen prison sentences, Moro said.
ALIGNING WITH TRUMP Bolsonaro met this week with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, President Donald Trump's envoy to Tuesday's presidential inauguration, who said the United States and Brazil will jointly defend democratic values in the region. "We have an opportunity to work alongside each other against authoritarian regimes," Pompeo said on Wednesday after discussing Venezuela with Brazil's new Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo, who was picked by Bolsonaro for his admiration of Trump's conservative nationalism.
Bolsonaro's rise to power culminates a swing to conservative rule in Latin America that has isolated leftist-ruled countries such as Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua. While Bolsonaro surprised Brazil's political establishment by surging to victory over a leftist coalition led by Lula's Workers Party, he takes office with the lowest approval rating of any new Brazilian president, according to a Datafolha poll Tuesday. That suggests he will have an uphill battle to enact his agenda of austerity measures to bring down an unsustainable budget deficit of about 180 billion reais ($47.31 billion) that has investors worried. Markets, however, are optimistic that Bolsonaro's economic team, led by former investment banker Paulo Guedes, will succeed in passing reforms needed to reduce the deficit and restore confidence and growth to a slow-moving economy.
One of Bolsonaro's first steps was to decree a less-than-expected increase to the minimum wage for this year, to 998 reais ($260) a month from 954 reais. The real currency strengthened 1 percent by midday Wednesday and the Sao Paulo Bovespa stock index rose 2 percent. Preferred shares in the country's largest utility Centrais Eletricas Brasileiras SA jumped over 10 pct after new Energy & Mines Minister Bento Albuquerque said the company would be partially privatized.
Doing even better was gun manufacturer Forjas Taurus SA whose shares rose 27 percent to 5.1 reais on Bolsonaro's plan to ease gun controls, to help Brazilians arm themselves in self defense against crime. In his inauguration address on Tuesday, Bolsonaro said his election had freed Latin America's largest nation from "socialism and political correctness." ($1 = 3.8048 reais)

Brazil's new President vows to fight "Marxist garbage" and "climate change hoax"
On New Year's Day, Brazil's new president, Jair Bolsonaro, was sworn in - and he started his presidency with a bang.
One of his main goals is to fight the "Marxist garbage" that has installed itself in educational institutions, Samhällsnytt reports.
If any values are to be taught in schools alongside the subject knowledge, then it's traditional family values, the newly appointed Minister of Education Ricardo Vélez has stated.
Brazil's hosting of the UN climate summit in 2019 has been canceled - because the president believes that the doomsday climate change warnings are exaggerated and propaganda from the global left and cultural Marxists.
As we reported earlier he has promised to make the process short with the criminal gangs that plague the country.
Police have been instructed to shoot to kill in confrontations with armed gang criminals, and in Rio de Janeiro, snipers will be deployed to eliminate violent street criminals, and all law-abiding Brazilian citizens will have the right to carry weapons to protect themselves.
Bolsonaro also wants to strengthen the ties to Trump and has announced that he will follow the US example and move Brazil's embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
Many of the ministers appointed by Bolsonaro, like he himself, have a military past. Only two of the new ministers are women.
Judge Sergio Moro has been appointed as Minister of Justice. It was he who sentenced former President Lula da Silva to twelve years in prison for corruption.
Bolsonaro gets off to a good start as president in terms of public opinion. 75 per cent of Brazilians believe that the new Government's path is the right way to go.
Several State leaders, including Viktor Orbán and Benjamin Netanyahu of Hungary and Israel, attended the inauguration ceremony to honour Bolsonaro.

Brazilian Intelligence Reveals 'Terrorist' Plot Against Bolsonaro
Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro's choice for minister of defense revealed on Friday that intelligence services had thwarted a "terrorist" attack against the conservative future head of state, who survived an assassination attempt to win last week's election.
Reserve General Augusto Heleno, who Bolsonaro has stated he will appoint defense minister when he takes office on January 1, said in an interview with the newspaper O Globo that Brazilian authorities had reason to believe Bolsonaro was the target of a plot to kill him. Heleno revealed the plot in response to a question about rumors of such a plot exacerbated by the elevated presence of security in Brasilia and around Bolsonaro, who has spent much of the week outside the capital. Officials had insisted that heightened security around the president-elect had been planned long before Bolsonaro won Sunday's election and would have occurred if his opponent, socialist Workers' Party (PT) candidate Fernando Haddad, had won instead. "The information suggesting that a planned terrorist attack against the president was thwarted is true," Heleno said. "That was confirmed by intelligence authorities already." O Globo notes that the general did not specify who was planning the attack or any details about the nature of the attempt, including when they attack may have occurred if not prevented.
Bolsonaro has increased personal security around him since September, when a socialist fanatic attempted to stab him to death at a rally in eastern Minas Gerais state. The assailant told police that he had been "ordered by God" to kill Bolsonaro. The attack occurred during a campaign rally in broad daylight and was caught on video. Bolsonaro suffered severe damage to his abdomen, requiring reconstructive surgery in his digestive tract, and could not campaign for much of the last month before the first round of voting on October 7. Bolsonaro did not appear in public when he won the election on October 28, instead delivering a victory speech from a private location. In his first public appearance since winning, which occurred at a church on Tuesday, his first words to the audience were "first, I want to thank God for being alive."
In an interview Wednesday, Heleno, who will be responsible for imposing Bolsonaro's right-wing law and order platform against crime, insisted that making Brazil a less violent place was a priority for the incoming administration. Heleno protested that, due to "an inversion of values in our history," the government stopped properly dealing with criminals and allowed drug gangs, organized criminal syndicates, and corrupt politicians to thrive. "We cannot accept for us to walk little by little towards becoming a 'narconation,'" he insisted. "The number of homicides in Brazil, the highest consumption of crack in the world, second-highest in cocaine, the highest passage of drugs [through the country] in the world. These are a series of titles that do not make the people proud. "It is absurd to treat this like a normal situation," he continued. "This situation of excess deserves excessive treatment."
In the same interview, Heleno addressed critics who fear that the Bolsonaro administration will violate legal procedures to capture drug criminals, insisting, "human rights are for righteous humans." While Heleno will be responsible for establishing order and organizing the war on drugs, Bolsonaro announced Thursday the addition of another political figure with a reputation for being tough on crime to his cabinet: Judge Sergio Moro, the magistrate responsible for issuing the warrants that made dozens of arrests of politicians under the investigation known as "Operation Car Wash" possible.
Working alongside Moro, investigators in southern Curitiba state found evidence of a nationwide corruption scheme in which politicians of several major political parties overpaid private contractors for public projects in exchange for kickbacks. Moro became a folk hero among Brazilians in 2016 after he issued warrants for several major political figures. Among those arrested, convicted, and sentenced by Moro are former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and former Speaker of the House Eduardo Cunha. "Federal Judge Sergio Moro has accepted our invitation to be minister of justice and public security. His anti-corruption, anti-organized crime agenda and his respect for the constitution and the law will be our guiding principle!" Bolsonaro announced on Twitter Thursday.

Top judge Sergio Moro set to become Brazil's new justice minister
The Brazilian judge at the centre of one of the largest corruption investigations in history has said that he would become justice minister in the government of President-elect Jair Bolsonaro, a decision that will be hailed by Brazilians eager for a crackdown on corruption but also add to deep polarisation after a bruising presidential campaign.
Sergio Moro is wildly popular among conservatives and loathed by many on the left, so his decision to join the incoming administration will feed the suspicion of many Brazilians that the judge was politically biased in jailing former president Luiz Inacio da Silva, a conviction that forced the poll-leading leftist out of the presidential race.
Moro met Bolsonaro at the president-elect's home in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday. Upon emerging, Moro did not speak to reporters but soon put out a statement confirming he had accepted an offer to lead both the justice and public security ministries, which will be combined in Bolsonaro's government.
