Korea's homegrown nanosatellite successfully launches into space
April 24, 2024 - 15:37
South Korea launched its first homegrown earth observation nanosatellite into orbit as part of the country's project to create a satellite constellation by 2027, the Science Ministry said Wednesday.
The Earth observation satellite, named NEONSAT-1, lifted off aboard Rocket Lab's Electron rocket from a spaceport in Mahia, New Zealand.
The Ministry of Science and ICT said the satellite was deployed into space at an altitude of 520 kilometers and successfully separated from the launch vehicle at around 8:22 a.m., about 50 minutes after the rocket's launch.
Initially, the launch was set to take place at 7:08 a.m. but was delayed due to a potential risk of collision with another space vehicle. The launch time was postponed to 7:14 a.m., according to the ministry.
The countdown stopped with 12 minutes remaining to resolve a ground system issue during launch preparation, but Rocket Lab resolved the problem and resumed the countdown.
The Science Ministry confirmed that Electron completed the launch process, including pairing with the first-stage engine and separating the second-stage engine, and used the kick stage to insert the satellite into the final orbit.
Around 11:57 a.m., the satellite contacted the state space institute the Korea Aerospace Research Institute's ground station in Daejeon, South Chungcheong Province, to report its operating status after circling the Earth about twice.
"The overall condition of the satellite was found to be good, with solar panels deployed normally and producing stable power," an official from the Science Ministry said.
At around 4:30 p.m., the ministry said the satellite communicated with the ground station at Sejong Station in Antarctica at 2:13 p.m. and 3:44 p.m., confirming that two-way communication was normal and the satellite launch was successful.
Developed by the state-run Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology for mass production, NEONSAT-1, less than 100 kilograms in weight with a resolution of 1 meter, is the first among 11 nanosatellites to form a satellite constellation to monitor and take images of the Korean Peninsula and its surrounding waters.
NEONSAT stands for New-space Earth Observation Satellite Constellation for National Safety. The launch project was named BTS, short for "The Beginning of the Swarm," by the launch service provider Rocket Lab.
KAIST plans to test the performance of the satellite and optical payload of NEONSAT-1 as originally planned in the orbit of 500 kilometers and above for a month and check the quality of the observation images for five months. When the inspection is completed in November, it is expected to perform Earth observation missions, the Science Ministry said.
With the successful launch of NEONSAT-1, Korea plans to launch five more nanosatellites into space in June 2026 and five more in September 2027 on the homegrown Nuri space rocket.
Afterward, a total of 11 satellites will capture optical images with a resolution of about 1 meter from an altitude of 500 kilometers for about 3 years.
It is expected that the establishment of a high-frequency, high-precision and real-time surveillance system using the nanosatellite constellation will provide an opportunity to improve the country's national security and the speed and accuracy of disaster response.
Lee Chang-yune, the first vice science minister in charge of science and technology policies, attributed the success of the first satellite launch to the concentration of industry, academia and research capabilities throughout the entire development, production and launch process.
"We plan to develop follow-up satellites without a hitch in line with the new space era to further strengthen Korea's space technology competitiveness and continue to foster the space industry," he said.

here is a new article:
No. of 'ghost child' cases nears 1,000; 34 confirmed dead
The Korean National Police Agency's National Office of Investigation said Monday that they are investigating 939 cases of what are popularly being referred to as "ghost children" in an ongoing nationwide probe to discover unregistered babies.
So far, police have confirmed that 34 of the unregistered babies have died. Investigators are looking into the possibility of 11 babies having been killed by their own parents, according to local reports quoting police. Nineteen other cases were closed after being cleared of suspicions, they explained.
Of the total cases police are looking into, the whereabouts of 782 babies remain unknown, while only 146 babies have been located.
Police said they had received a total of 1,069 reports of undocumented newborns as of late Friday afternoon. The highest number of cases were filed with the Seoul Metropolitan Police, with 205 reports, while only five cases were filed to Sejong City Police, they added.
Seoul Gwanak Police Station is looking into two suspicious deaths and found that the newborns had died at the hospital after receiving medical care immediately following birth in 2015 and 2016. Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police, Busan Metropolitan Police and Incheon Metropolitan Police are each investigating one death case.
As of Monday, four infanticide cases have been referred to the prosecution after police found evidence possibly indicating their parents' involvement in the deaths of their children.
South Korea launched a wide-scale nationwide probe late last month to identify the whereabouts of 2,123 undocumented babies born since 2015 and verify whether they are alive or dead. Local authorities have faced difficulties tracking those born before 2014 due to poor data management.
Investigation results are set to be announced Wednesday at the earliest.

North Korea Threatens Biden then Launches Two More Ballistic Missiles for Third Time This Month - Biden Goes Silent
North Korea today launched two more missiles for the third time this month and threatens Biden with a response due to sanctions. Biden goes silent.
American Military News reported:
North Korea test-fired two more ballistic missiles for the third time this month on Friday just hours after threatening the United States with a "stronger and certain reaction" to sanctions.
The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command confirmed North Korea's launch in a statement on Friday, saying, "We are aware of the ballistic missile launch and are consulting closely with our allies and partners. While we have assessed that this event does not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel or territory, or to our allies, the missile launch highlights the destabilizing impact of the DPRK's illicit weapons program. The U.S. commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea and Japan remains ironclad."
According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the South Korean military "detected two projectiles believed to be short-range ballistic missiles" that North Korea fired towards the East Sea from Uiju, North Pyonganbuk-do, ABC News reported.
The launch came just hours after a North Korean foreign ministry spokesperson expressed anger over sanctions implemented by the U.S. this week. On Wednesday, the U.S. State Department sanctioned eight individuals and entities linked to North Korea's weapons programs. The U.S. also suggested that the U.N. Security Council impose new sanctions on North Korea.
"The U.S. is intentionally escalating the situation even with the activation of independent sanctions, not content with referring the D.P.R.K.'s just activity to the U.N. Security Council," the North Korean foreign ministry said in a statement, according to the New York Times. "If the U.S. adopts such a confrontational stance, the D.P.R.K. will be forced to take stronger and certain reaction to it."
Cheong Seong-Change from South Korea's Sejong Institute said Friday's launches reflected North Korea's irritation with U.S. sanctions.
The Biden Administration has not responded to these actions by the North Koreans. It's as if Biden doesn't know what to do or is too scared to do it. Biden has been silent to actions by China, Russia, North Korea and Iran in the past few weeks.

SEOUL INTRODUCES SELF-DRIVING TAXIS
https://hackaday.com/2021/12/26/seoul-introduces-self-driving-taxis/
Last year the Seoul city government passed an ordinance enabling the commercial operation of autonomous passenger-carrying vehicles. A six square kilometer region in the Seoul neighborhood of Sangam, near the 2002 World Cup Stadium, was designated as a pilot program test bed. This area encompasses 24 streets totaling 31.3 km. Two companies were selected, and the pilot program launched a few weeks ago. Currently there are three vehicles and passengers can ride for free during this introductory phase. Three more taxis and a bus will be added within this year, with plans for 50 in this region by 2026. For the time being, these cars require a standby driver who takes control in an emergency and in school zones. Check out the short news report (in English) below the break.
There was a smaller autonomous driving test program in the city of Sejong which we wrote about back in January, and [Alfred Jones] gave a keynote presentation at the 2021 Hackaday Remoticon on the challenges of designing self-driving vehicles if you want to learn more on this topic.

South Korea Considering Tracking COVID-19 Patients With GPS-Enabled Bracelet
The South Korean government is mulling the introduction of electronic bracelets that connect to one's phone and would allow authorities to better track the movements of people ordered to self-quarantine due to the COVID-19 novel coronavirus.
While South Korea has made much progress in slowing the spread of the novel coronavirus, there are still 46,566 individuals currently under self-quarantine orders - which officials increasingly fear that many may be violating, according to the Korea Times.
"Self-quarantine is very important to stop the spread of the coronavirus. And for the most part, people comply well with the self-quarantine rules. But some have violated the rules and left their homes, and this is forcing the government to take action," senior health ministry official Yoon Tae Ho said on Tuesday during a daily meeting on COVID-19 in Sejong, South Korea.

Canadian indicted for showing 'cannibal video' to seven-year-olds
According to Sejong Police Station, the Canadian national, 26, showed the YouTube video clip to eight to nine preschool children aged six to seven at a private language institute in the city of Sejong.
The children reportedly expressed their shock at the video by covering their eyes with their hands or holding their heads.
The parents immediately reported the matter to police. Police sought an arrest warrant because the woman is a foreigner who might flee the country, but the request was refused.
The video clip reportedly shows specific equipment being used to extract human flesh.
The teacher told police that she showed the video after the children had asked detailed questions about human flesh.
"It is difficult to conduct further investigation because the children are so young and were too shocked," said a Sejong Police Station official. Police plan to question the parents and children.

An English teacher from Canada who showed a BBC documentary titled "What does human flesh taste like?" to a group of children as young as six faces child abuse charges in South Korea.
Footage from surveillance cameras in the classroom shows shocked children burying their heads in their arms to shield themselves from the images in the BBC Earth Lab programme, which was uploaded to YouTube in 2016.
"We're helping the children receive treatment for post-traumatic stress," a detective told the South China Morning Post on Monday, after parents filed complaints with police authorities in Sejong City, where the language institute is based.

The announcement follows news that Kim Yong Chol will not accompany North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on a trip this week to Vladivostok for a high-profile summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Foreign minister Ri Yong Ho and first vice foreign minister Choe Son Hui were of the part of the entourage, however.
The move represents the first time that Kim Yong Chol has not accompanied the DPRK leader on an overseas trip.
Kim was present at three inter-Korean summits held last year, and it is widely believed that he and NIS director Suh Hoon operate a clandestine communications channel.
He has also served as a key interlocutor in DPRK-U.S. nuclear negotiations, visiting the White House in June 2018 and January 2019 ahead of the first and second summits between Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump to deliver letters from Kim Jong Un.
Cheong Seong-chang, Vice President of Research Planning at the Sejong Institute, said that Kim would likely still have "limited influence" due to his continued role as vice-chairman of the WPK Central Committee and election as a member of the State Affairs Commission (SAC) at this month's First Session of the 14th SPA.
Given that Kim likely played a major role in the breakdown of February's no-deal U.S.-DPRK Hanoi summit, Cheong continued, his absence from this week's Kim-Putin meeting could positively affect prospects for denuclearization.
"It is a very positive sign for nuclear negotiations between North Korea and the U.S. if [Kim's] dependence on Kim Yong Chol is significantly reduced," he added.
"That... Kim Yong Chol, representing the position of the military, has been replaced by Jang Kum Chol, who is in charge of tasks pertinent to civilian exchanges, increases the likelihood that North Korea's attitude toward South Korea will change in a flexible and pragmatic direction."

Seoul proposes joint fishing zone, N. Korean port modernization
Sejong, Sept. 27 (Yonhap) – South Korea's oceans minister said Thursday the two Koreas will look into ways of creating a joint fishing zone near the western sea border and overhaul old North Korean ports as the first step in cooperation in the fisheries and maritime sector.
Kim Young-choon, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, said he discussed inter-Korean projects with North Korean officials during his recent visit to Pyongyang when he accompanied President Moon Jae-in to his third summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
At the summit last week, the leaders of the two Koreas agreed to set up a joint fishing zone near the tensely guarded sea border, between South Korea's Baengnyeong Island and Jangsan Cape, a North Korean naval base. Just 17 kilometers separates the two areas.
"Among fisheries cooperation projects, the joint fishing zone may not be on the list of U.N. sanctions," Kim said in a meeting with reporters. "If fishermen of the two Koreas catch fish in each other's zone under the give-and-take framework, it may not be subject to economic sanctions. I think the Seoul government could ask the U.N. Security Council sanctions committee to review this matter."
