Q Research General #25764: Dividers Will Fail ~ WWG1WGA Edition

Malawi's Vice-President Saulos Chilima has died at the age of 51 after a military aircraft he was flying in crashed in a forest in the north of the country.
He had been vice-president for 10 years, initially under former President Peter Mutharika, who picked him from the business sector for the second most senior post in government.
He was described as a "performer" and "workaholic" but he was perhaps defined by being at the centre of corruption allegations in government.
First as an accuser, and then as an accused.
Before Dr Chilima became vice-president in 2014, he was the managing director of the country's leading telecommunications firm Airtel Malawi, the first Malawian to head the organisation.
Mr Mutharika had reportedly said he was partnering with a "reliable and productive" person.
But four years later, Dr Chilima fell out with the president, accusing the government of not doing enough to fight corruption and protecting some people.
Under Malawian law the president cannot fire the vice-president - Dr Chilima defied calls to resign despite publicly challenging the government he was in.
He later formed his own political party, the United Transformation Movement (UTM), calling for radical change and reform in the country.
He ran for president in 2019 as the party's candidate and came third.
Mr Mutharika won that election but it was subsequently annulled by Malawi's top court because of widespread irregularities.
It was the first time in Africa that an election result was both overturned by a court and then the sitting president went on to be defeated in a re-run.
Dr Chilima teamed up as the running mate of Lazarus Chakwera in the historic 2020 re-run.
Mr Chakwera, who had emerged second in the discredited poll of 2019, was resoundingly elected president, and Dr Chilima became his vice-president.
But the vice-president would soon himself face corruption allegations, which he had so much rallied against in the previous administration.
He was arrested in 2022 on claims that he received money in return for influencing the awarding of government contracts - which he denied.
The president fired other officials who were named alongside him.
As he could not sack the vice-president, Mr Chakwera promised he would no longer delegate any official duties to Dr Chilima while he was facing trial.
But the charges were dropped last month with no reasons given - in a move that raised questions about the handling of corruption cases.
Before his role as a political heavyweight in Malawi, Dr Chilima had held other senior roles in the corporate sector, including at Coca Cola and Unilever.
He was an economist and held a PhD in knowledge management.
While serving in government, he was also the minister responsible for economic planning and public sector reforms.
The government's website said he was a "performer", "workaholic" and "an achiever".
Dr Chilima was born on 12 February 1973 in Ntcheu district in central Malawi.
He leaves behind his wife Mary and two children, Sean and Elizabeth.

Malawi's vice president and 9 others are confirmed dead after the wreckage of their plane is located
Malawian Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine other people died when the small military plane they were traveling in crashed in bad weather in a mountainous region in the north of the country, the president said Tuesday. Chilima was 51.
President Lazarus Chakwera announced in a live address on state television that the wreckage of the plane had been located after a search of more than a day in thick forests and hilly terrain near the northern city of Mzuzu. He said the wreckage was found near a hill and the plane had been "completely destroyed" and everyone onboard was killed on impact.
Chakwera said he had been informed by the head of Malawi's armed forces that the plane had been found and "I am deeply saddened and sorry to inform you all that it has turned out to be a terrible tragedy."
"Words cannot describe how heartbreaking this is and I can only imagine how much pain and anguish you all must be feeling at this time, as well as how much pain and anguish you all will be feeling in the coming days and weeks as we mourn this terrible loss," Chakwera said.
He said Chilima was "a good man, a devoted father and husband, a patriotic citizen who served his country with distinction, and a formidable vice president."
The group was traveling to Mzuzu to attend the funeral of a former government minister. Chilima had just returned from an official visit to South Korea on Sunday.
Chilima was serving his second term as vice president. He was also in the role from 2014-2019 under former President Peter Mutharika. He was a candidate in the 2019 Malawian presidential election and finished third, behind the incumbent, Mutharika, and Chakwera. The vote was later annulled by Malawi's Constitutional Court because of irregularities.
Chilima then joined Chakwera's campaign as his running mate in an historic election rerun in 2020, when Chakwera was elected president. It was the first time in Africa that an election result that was overturned by a court resulted in a defeat for the sitting president.

Report: Plane Carrying Malawi Vice President, Nine Other People Missing

A plane carrying the vice president of Malawi, a southeast African country, and nine other people is reportedly missing.

Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine other people are reportedly missing after departing from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, around 9:17 a.m. for the funeral of former Malawi Attorney General Ralph Kasambara, Lucky Sikwese, an aide in Chilima's office, confirmed, according to the New York Times.

The aircraft reportedly disappeared from radar systems, and officials have not been able to get into contact with the plane.

Sikwese said aviation officials had confirmed that the Malawi Defense Force aircraft had "not landed at any of the airports" after the plane had missed its landing at Mzuzu International Airport due to severe weather.

"The Civilian Aviation Authority has confirmed that it has not landed at any airports," Sikwese said in a statement.

Chilima was arrested and charged in 2022 over claims that he had allegedly taken money in exchange for government contracts, according to the outlet.

In May, a prosecutor dropped the corruption charges against Chilima.

The outlet noted that Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera had "deployed a search and rescue operation that included both national and regional agencies" in response to the missing plane.

News of the missing plane comes a month after it was reported that a plane carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other officials had gone missing during severe weather in a mountainous part of the country and crashed.

A military plane carrying Malawi's vice president is missing and a search is underway

A military plane carrying Malawi's vice president and nine others went missing Monday and a search is underway, the president's office said.
The plane carrying 51-year-old Vice President Saulos Chilima left the southern African nation's capital, Lilongwe, at 9.17 a.m. but failed to land as scheduled around 45 minutes later at Mzuzu International Airport, about 370 kilometers (230 miles) to the north.
Aviation authorities lost contact with the plane when it "went off radar," according to a statement from Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera's office. Chakwera ordered a search operation and canceled a trip to the Bahamas, his office said.
"All efforts to make contact with the aircraft since it went off radar have failed thus far," it said.
Chakwera was informed of the missing plane by Gen. Valentino Phiri, the head of the Malawian armed forces. The president ordered national and local authorities to "conduct an immediate search and rescue operation to locate the whereabouts of the aircraft," his office said.
Chilima had been facing corruption charges over allegations that he received money in return for influencing the awarding of government contracts, but the charges were surprisingly dropped by prosecutors last month. That led to criticism that Chakwera's administration was not taking a hard enough stance against graft.
Chilima was arrested in late 2022 and made several court appearances, but the trial had not started. He denied the allegations.
Chilima was a candidate in the 2019 Malawian presidential election and finished third. That vote that was won by incumbent Peter Mutharika but was annulled by Malawi's Constitutional Court because of irregularities. Chakwera finished second in that election.
Chilima then joined Chakwera's campaign as his running mate in the historic election rerun in 2020, when Chakwera was elected president. It was the first time in Africa that an election result that was overturned by a court resulted in a defeat for the sitting president.
