The country needs someone who is fit, 'that's not me': Austria's health minister to step down, exhausted by Covid-19 pandemic
Austria's health minister has announced his plan to step down next week, saying his 15 months in the job felt like 15 years, as he led the country's response the Covid-19 pandemic and vaccine rollout.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Austrian Health Minister Rudolf Anschober said the country needed someone who was totally up to the job of dealing with the pandemic. "In the worst health crisis in decades the republic needs a health minister who is 100% fit. That is not currently me," he said.
Anschober, a 60-year-old former journalist, schoolteacher and member of the Greens, the junior partner in the conservative-led coalition, cited blood-pressure problems and his exhaustion after 15 months of battling the Covid pandemic. "I… do not want to break myself... I took on a very nice and challenging job 15 months ago. It feels like it has not been 15 months but 15 years," he stated.
The minister took the role when the coalition was formed back in January 2020, but before the pandemic had arrived properly on European shores. He was often considered a lone voice calling for tougher restrictions to slow the spread of the virus, while Chancellor Sebastian Kurz's conservatives were keen to keep the economy open.
Kurz tweeted on Tuesday that he had been informed about Anschober's resignation in the morning and respected this personal decision. "Rudi Anschober carried out this task with great responsibility right from the start. Over the past 16 months, he has sacrificed himself for our country and, as Minister of Health, has put all his energy into fighting the corona pandemic," he added.
Like much of Europe, Austria continues to battle against a third wave of Covid-19 as it rolls out vaccines.

Austrians must wear FFP2 respirators in malls & on public transport, govt says amid lockdown extension
Austria has introduced tighter rules on social distancing and mask-wearing, with a nationwide lockdown extended until February 7. Life will hopefully return to normal in the summer, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has said.
The new rules "don't make anyone happy and are anything but popular, yet they are necessary, even if everyone is already fed up," Kurz said on Sunday.
Beginning January 25, Austrians will have to wear respirator-type FFP2 masks in supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations, and on public transport. The FFP2s offer better protection against airborne infections than cheaper, single-use surgical masks.
The FFP2 masks, which are currently sold in pharmacies, will be available at a "really low" price in supermarkets, according to Health Minister Rudolf Anschober.
People will also have to stay two meters apart from each other, instead of one meter.
Kurz said the decision to bring in stricter rules was made in light of the more contagious variant of the coronavirus that was discovered in Britain at the end of last year, and because officials need to curb the rise of Covid-19 cases across the country.
It would be "reckless" to relax the restrictions now, Kurz said, expressing hope that with the ongoing immunization campaign Austria can return to "complete normality" in the summer.
The news of the tighter rules came a day after some 10,000 people, many of whom were maskless, marched in Vienna, protesting against the lockdown.
Medical officials reported 1,267 new Covid-19 cases in Austria on Sunday, including 281 in Vienna.
Overall, the country has had 388,719 cases and 7,082 deaths from the virus since the start of the pandemic, according to government data.

Austria Declares Wearing Masks Mandatory in Supermarkets
Austria has introduced measures to halt the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus, including making it mandatory to wear masks in supermarkets.
The government, led by Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, announced the measures this week stating that protective masks would be handed out to the public at the entrances of supermarkets and must be worn while shopping.
Chancellor Kurz stated that masks were still no substitute for keeping a safe distance from others and, according to newspaper Kronen Zeitung, stated: "I am fully aware that masks are something foreign to our culture."
Minister of Health Rudolf Anschober, a member of the Green Party, added that the masks would only be effective for a period of about four hours and that they would help make sure the capacity of hospitals was not overwhelmed.
The government has also ordered a large part of the tourism sector to shut down, with a ban on overnight stays in hotels and guest houses.
Kurz added that Austria's hospitals could become overwhelmed within the next two weeks with just 1,071 intensive care beds still available across the country and 908 ventilators.
"How long the overload lasts, especially in intensive care medicine, depends on all of us. It is already clear that many people will die from this disease. But we have to do our utmost to ensure that no more people die than have to die," Kurz said.
Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler, leader of the Green Party, added that he saw the current situation as a "calm before the storm" and said: "If we listen to the experts, I am in favour of orienting ourselves to those who draw the more dramatic scenarios."
Despite sharing a border with Italy, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak in Europe, Austria has managed to keep cases at just over 9,000 as of Monday with 108 deaths.
Italy, by contrast, continues to see growth in cases and deaths, with over 100,000 confirmed cases and 11,591 deaths as of Monday.
