Conservatives name Candice Bergen as interim leader after O'Toole voted out
Last Updated Wednesday, February 2, 2022 11:34PM EST
The Conservative Party of Canada has named Candice Bergen as interim leader following a private vote late Wednesday evening. Bergen, who had the role of deputy party leader, finished tops among nine candidates in a private preferential ballot.
Bergen has represented the Manitoba riding of Portage-Lisgar since 2008. She is replacing Erin O'Toole, who was ousted earlier Wednesday when 73 MPs voted to replace him. "I want to express my gratitude and respect to [O'Toole] for his leadership and the sacrifices he's made for our party and caucus," Bergen tweeted earlier Wednesday. "Thanks also to Rebecca and the O'Toole family for their dedication and support. Erin is an asset and will continue to be a valued member of our team."
Bergen has previously held the role of Minister of State for Social Development in Stephen Harper's government and served as Opposition House leader under Rona Ambrose. Lori Turnbull, director of Dalhousie University's School of Public Administration, said Bergen brings experience and name recognition to the Conservative party leadership, which can be "a blessing and a curse." "A lot of people who know her for better or worse would associate her with Harper, with Erin O'Toole, with Andrew Scheer," she told CTV News Channel. "If you're deciding whether the party's going to go in a new direction or keep continuity, she's definitely the continuity candidate." Turnbull added that Bergen's first order of business would be to try to unite the party, which could be a challenge.
"She knows the party really well, she has the trust of people, but whether or not she's going to be able to bring together factions of the party that actually fundamentally disagree on really important questions, I don't know that she's going to have the time or the space to do that," she said. Ron Liepert, a Conservative MP from Alberta, said it will be difficult for Bergen to unify the party. "It's going to be a bloody tough job," he told The Canadian Press. Meanwhile, other MPs embrace the change as a chance for a fresh start.
"Erin was a long time coming," said Edmonton MP Matt Jeneroux. "You can't run in the leadership on one thing and then do something else." Bergen faced stiff competition for the role, as eight other MPs threw their names in the hat for a chance at leading the party, though not all the candidates stated their intentions publicly. Among those interested in the position were Marilyn Gladu, a Conservative MP for Sarnia-Lambton. "I'll put my name forward and see what the caucus has to say about that and then we'll see where we go from there," she told CTV News Channel's Power Play earlier on Wednesday.
"I think this is an opportunity for a fresh start to unify the party. We definitely need to see that kind of unity and I think the grassroots needs to weigh in on the policy positions that we took in the last election, so we can be successful, expand the base and win the next election." John Williamson, MP for New Brunswick Southwest, announced in a tweet that he too was among those interested in leading the party. "I know how to keep us united around the things that matter most to us as Conservatives," he said in a statement posted online. "We must demonstrate to our supporters and future voters we're fighting for them - every day - with a consistent plan."
Rob Moore, MP for the Fundy Royal riding of New Brunswick, had also thrown his name into the ring. Moore is currently the shadow cabinet minister for Justice. "Now, more than anytime since prime minister [Stephen] Harper left office, our party needs sensible, experienced, and above all else, principled, Conservative leadership," he said in a statement.
HIGH-PROFILE NAMES NOT INTERESTED IN LEADERSHIP
When it comes to who might be interested in leading the party long-term,there are also several high-profile Conservatives who've stated they don't intend run. In a statement to CTV News, former interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose said she isn't interested. "It's really hard to see what's happening and not jump back in to help," she said. "My heart says yes but my head says no. I'm not going to go back at this juncture in my life. Our kids are at the age where they need us and I am enjoying being in business." Earlier this week, both Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said they are not interested in federal leadership and are instead focused on their respective provinces. "My hands are full," Ford told reporters on Tuesday. "I love being premier of this province. That's my job." "I'm just 24/7 working on getting us out of this pandemic."

Former Canadian environment minister Rona Ambrose says she faced death threats as environment minister
Former interim Conservative Party leader Rona Ambrose said she faced death threats from environmentalists when she served as Canada's environment minister in the early 2000s.
Speaking at the Grow Canada agricultural conference in Ottawa on Wednesday, Ambrose remembered how she required additional security because of threats made on her life.
"I have to tell you, it was not all fun and games," she said. "I had my life actually threatened, for real, by environmentalists. I had to have security outfit my home and my office with panic buttons. I had to have a bodyguard. I had to have undercover police protection - at times, actual SUVs full of people, full of guys, to protect me from environmentalists, of all things."
The retired Alberta MP served as Canada's environment minister from March 2006 to January 2007.
Ambrose said she was told by then-prime minister Stephen Harper at the time of her appointment that he wanted to give her a cabinet role that was "something really easy, with no controversy."
"You can get your feet wet; this will be great for you. I'm going to give you environment," she recalled Harper saying, earning several chuckles from the room.
That conversation took place before well-know environmental activist Al Gore arrived on the scene with his book An Inconvenient Truth.
"Within weeks, my office was flooded with letters from kids - little kids all over the country - with crayon-drawn photos of polar bears swimming, and they can't make it from one ice floe to the next, because all the ice is melting and they're all drowning and I've got to save them," she recalled.
"It was just... It was mayhem."
Within months of her appointment, Ambrose says there were calls to have her removed from her post.
"You are not worth your salt as a minister if you don't get a call for your resignation, let me tell you," she said with a chuckle.
At the time, the Conservatives had a minority government. The opposition parties banded together and threatened to "bring forward a motion to bring down the government over me ... because I hadn't fixed climate change yet," Ambrose recalled.
Harper, she said, decided "to call their bluff" and the parties eventually backed down. "All that to say, that was my trial by fire. That was my first few months as a minister."
The former Conservative cabinet minister would go on to serve as minister of a series of departments: Western economic diversification, labour, public works, status of women, health - and then as the Conservative Party of Canada's interim leader from 2015 to 2017. She retired from politics in July 2017.
In August 2017, Ambrose was appointed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's 13-member advisory panel on the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Trudeau, Freeland met with Ukrainian neo-Nazi party cofounder
https://tnc.news/2022/03/15/trudeau-freeland-met-with-ukrainian-neo-nazi-party-cofounder/
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland met with the co-founder of a far-right fascist party in Ukraine, which was styled off of Hilter's Nazi Party, True North has learned.
Andriy Parubiy served as the equivalent of the legislative speaker of Ukrainian Parliament from 2016 to 2019, and during that time he personally met with Trudeau and Freeland several times.
Freeland met with Parubiy in May 2019 for the second time, and posted about it on her official Facebook page.
Earlier in his career, Parubiy was an influential member of Ukraine's far-right neo-Nazi movement. In 1991, he co-founded the Nazi-styled Social-National Party of Ukraine (SNPU) - a party focused on "racial nationalism" that even adopted the Nazi Wolfsangel symbol as its logo.
In 2004, it was renamed to the Svoboda Party and efforts were made to remove Nazi imagery and expel extreme fascist members from the party. Within the Ukrainian political context, the party is still described as "ultranationalist" and part of Ukraine's "far-right."
According to a report from the Jerusalem Post, as recently as 2016 Parubiy made anti-Semetic comments. He accused Jews of sending convicts to settle Eastern Ukraine and trying to destroy the genetic memory of the Holomodor.
Parubiy first rubbed shoulders with Trudeau in 2016 while a part of a visiting delegation to Ottawa. The Ukrainian Embassy to Canada detailed the meeting, which also included the then-Minister of Defence Harjit Sajjan.
Parubiy first rubbed shoulders with Trudeau in 2016 while a part of a visiting delegation to Ottawa, which also included the then-Minister of Defence Harjit Sajjan.
"During his visit to the capital of Canada, Mr. Parubiy held a number of fruitful meetings with Canadian government officials and politicians," wrote the Embassy of Ukraine to Canada on Feb. 26, 2016. "First Deputy Speaker had a brief meeting with Canadian Prime Minister the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau and Minister of Defence the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan."
Trudeau met with Parubiy again in July of that year while visiting Kiev, according to the embassy. Freeland was also present during this junket and is photographed signing an official agreement.
Freeland met with Parubiy again in May 2019, and posted about it on her official Facebook page.
"Met with Andriy Parubiy, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, and discussed the role that Canadian election monitors played in Ukraine's presidential elections and will play again parliamentary elections later this year," noted the message from Freeland.
"Canada stands with Ukraine and its vibrant democracy!" she exclaimed.
Conservative MP James Bezan and former interim leader Rona Ambrose also met with Parubiy in 2016, as did former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
The party Andriy Parubiy founded, the SNPU and its offspring Svoboda, have been described by numerous legacy media sources as a "fascist" and even "neo-Nazi" party. Continue…

The New York-based company, which manages US$5.4 trillion in assets, describes itself as a firm that invests on behalf of a wide assortment of clients - from governments, to large institutions, to middle-income people saving for retirement.
The company, founded by CEO Larry Fink in 1988, is also considered an expert in risk management and asset valuation, said Moshe Milevsky, an associate professor of finance at York University's Schulich School of Business.
Milevsky said the company also consults with, and for, firms and governments around the world - including, he noted, the U.S. government during the 2008 financial crisis.
With a company the size of BlackRock, Milevsky said it's likely that it oversees at least a portion of just about every Canadian's retirement nest egg.
"It's almost impossible to talk about them without tip-toeing around the fact that they're an integral part of anything we do in the financial community," said Milevsky, who describes Fink as a "hero" in investment circles.
He noted that publications like The Economist magazine have expressed concerns the firm is getting larger and larger.
"Their expertise is very, very deep - very broad around the world - and that's where the knowledge resides," said Milevsky, who noted BlackRock has recruited many of his students over the years.
"That's not to say we shouldn't be alarmed about the fact that there is one company that has an indirect control of over 10 per cent of world assets."
But Milevsky said if one decided to seek private-sector advice on something like Ottawa's proposed infrastructure bank, he would rank BlackRock at the top of his list.
Laurence Booth, a University of Toronto professor, said he doesn't think Ottawa's decision to seek BlackRock's advice was a conflict of interest because it provided international expertise to government that was unavailable in-house.
"If you're going to sell something to people, you need to know what the customer wants," said Booth, a CIT chair at the Rotman School of Management.
The Liberals' adversaries have tried to cast BlackRock's involvement with the government as an example of its focus on the well-being of big investors rather than Canadians.
"The infrastructure bank boondoggle is just another taxpayer-funded Liberal vanity project," interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose said Tuesday during question period.
"Has the prime minister forgotten that his job is to serve regular working people?"
Matthew Dube, the NDP's parliamentary infrastructure critic, accused the Liberals on Wednesday of developing the infrastructure bank behind closed doors with BlackRock at the table. His party is calling for a full day of House of Commons debate on the issue this Thursday.
Dube insisted Canadians will likely have to pay twice for their infrastructure - first through the federal treasury and then through user fees that will generate corporate profits.
"This thing is chock full of conflicts of interest," Dube said.
The government unveiled the design of the infrastructure bank in November. The announcement came a couple of weeks after the feds' council of economic advisers recommended Ottawa create such an institution in order to lure private capital by offering steady returns through user fees.
The influential advisory council includes powerful executives of institutional investors: Michael Sabia, head of Quebec's public pension fund manager, and Mark Wiseman, the former president and CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.
Last May, BlackRock announced Wiseman had joined the company as a senior managing director.
In November, Trudeau participated in a summit hosted by the federal government that brought together some of the world's most powerful institutional investors - with a combined $21 trillion at their disposal.
Ottawa, which used the opportunity to promote Canada as an attractive place to invest, engaged BlackRock to invite its clients to the event. Fink and Trudeau were to deliver the opening remarks, according to a draft agenda.
In the lead-up to the summit, BlackRock reportedly participated in biweekly conference calls with Infrastructure Canada and the Privy Council Office to create a presentation Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi was to deliver to the investors.
BlackRock says it has organized similar events in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, India, Mexico and the U.S.
"Our role in assisting to organize the summit included logistical planning, helping the government establish more relationships with global investors and providing directional feedback on Canadian long-term investment opportunities they might be interested in," a BlackRock spokeswoman wrote in an email statement.
"Any investments in Canada that may ultimately result from the summit's discussions would likely be made directly by an investor and wouldn't necessarily include BlackRock or a BlackRock-advised fund."
