Disgraced Sydney business tycoon Ron Brierley unfit for trial, lawyers say

Disgraced business tycoon Ron Brierley is unfit to plead or be tried on charges of possessing child abuse material due to deteriorating cognitive function, a Sydney court has been told.

The 88-year-old was charged in March with three counts of the offence, about three years after an appeals court overturned a previous jail term for similar offending because of his ill-health and conditions in custody.

Brierley was handed that sentence after he was stopped at Sydney Airport in 2019 and eventually pleaded guilty.

When authorities examined his devices, they found child abuse material, and Brierley initially said he had downloaded it for recreation because it "looked interesting".

They found more material on other devices in his Point Piper home, ultimately determining there were more than 46,000 images, with significant duplication.

A judge rejected his suggestion that he thought the material was legal.

About six months after the more recent charges were laid, Brierley's lawyers today made an unopposed application in Waverley Local Court to have the case either permanently stayed or diverted under mental health legislation.

"The evidence suggests clearly that Mr Brierley is not fit to enter a plea," his counsel Phillip Boulten SC told the magistrate.

Mr Boulten said Brierley was also "not really fit" to give instructions about making the mental health-related application.

'There would not be proper justice if this case continued'
The court heard the evidence "all points one way", with three doctors unanimously determining Brierley is unfit to be tried due to a moderate form of vascular dementia.

Disgraced multi-millionaire Ron Brierley has been sentenced to a maximum of 14 months in jail for the possession of child abuse material.

The 84-year-old's age and health were taken into consideration during sentencing, with Brierley to serve at least seven months.
Brierley's defence team told 9News there will be no application for an appeal made today.

The businessman was on the way to Fiji when he was stopped by Australian Border Force officials at Sydney International Airport in December 2019.

Last month, disgraced millionaire Ron Brierley pled guilty to three of 17 charges related to his possession of material containing the sexual abuse of children. He was arrested at Sydney Airport in December 2019.

Ron Brierley, accused of possessing images of child sexual abuse, has surrendered his knighthood after pleading guilty, The New Zealand Herald reported on Tuesday, citing the country's prime minister, Jacinda Ardern.

"The Clerk of the Executive Council wrote to him on April 6 2021 on behalf of the Prime Minister, giving him 30 days in which to provide any information that he considered relevant before the Prime Minister made her decision," the statement by the Prime Minister's office said. "Brierley may no longer use the title 'Sir', and he has been asked to return his insignia."

According to Ardern, if the disgraced millionaire had not voluntarily relinquished the title, he would have been stripped of it.

Brierley, a New Zealand investor, was knighted in 1988 for his service in business, when he was estimated to be worth $220 million. In March 1961, he founded R.A. Brierley Investments with zero capital, and the company became one of the largest in New Zealand.

In December 2019, he was arrested in Sydney airport, later facing 17 charges of possessing material of child sex abuse. The officials said that he had "large amounts of child abuse material" on his devices, particularly with children between two and 15 years old.

The millionaire pled guilty to three of the charges earlier in April, with the remaining charges withdrawn. According to The NZ Herald, his barrister admitted he possessed "some images" but the exact figure is "in dispute".

Disgraced millionaire Ron Brierley has surrendered his knighthood.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern this afternoon revealed that Brierley, who pleaded guilty to possession of child sexual abuse material, has relinquished his knighthood.

She said that if Brierley had not voluntarily relinquished the title, it would have been stripped from him.

Brierley was knighted for services to business in 1988.

He has been estimated to be worth $220 million.

Brierley pleaded guilty to three charges of possessing child sex abuse material in the Downing Centre Local Court with 14 charges withdrawn.

Brierley's barrister admitted he possessed "some images" but the exact figure is "in dispute".

A spokesperson for the prime minister said Ardern had asked for the forfeiture process to be initiated.

Brierley will have 30 days to respond, but after that the prime minister can write to the Queen asking her to cancel his appointment to the Order and he will be asked to return his insignia.

A long-time campaigner against child exploitation said Brierley should do the decent thing and give up his knighthood himself.

Sir Ron Brierley pleads guilty to possessing child sexual abuse material

Brierley pleaded guilty to three charges of possessing child sex abuse material in the Downing Centre Local Court with 14 charges withdrawn.

Brierley's barrister admitted he possessed "some images" but the exact figure is "in dispute".

A spokesperson for the prime minister said Ardern had asked for the forfeiture process to be initiated.

Brierley will have 30 days to respond, but after that the prime minister can write to the Queen asking her to cancel his appointment to the Order and he will be asked to return his insignia.

The New Zealand businessman was arrested in December 2019 on six counts of possession of child abuse material.

Border officials had found child sexual abuse material on his laptop and electRonic storage devices.

Brierley will next appear in court on 30 April.

He was one of the best known New Zealanders of the 1980s and 1990s - never far from the headlines or a new business buy-up.

Brierley became both feared and revered in business circles for his shrewd ability to spot companies with untapped value, which he would then take over and turn around for vast profits.

The "corporate raider" - as he's usually referred to - founded Brierley Investments, which was one of New Zealand's largest most successful and glamorous companies of the 1980s.

He was an expert at what admirers called "corporate rationalisation" - the ability to spot when to buy a company and reform it to extract more value.

The NBR's 2019 Rich List estimates Brierley's net worth is about $220 million, putting him at number 82 on the list of the wealthiest New Zealanders.

On Tuesday, an 82 year old was stopped by Australian Border Force officers at Mascot airport about 6.30 am while trying to board a plane for Fiji, police said.

"The man's carry-on luggage was searched before the contents of his laptop and electRonic storage devices were reviewed, which are alleged to have contained large amounts of child abuse material," the police statement said.

"The Point Piper man was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with six counts of possess child abuse material."

Millionaire businessman Sir Ron Brierley has been charged for alleged possession of child pornography.

In a statement, NSW Police said the 82-year-old was arrested at Sydney International Airport on Tuesday about 6.30am.

Mr Brierley, who was born in New Zealand, became one of Australia's most feared corporate raiders and retired this year after a 60-year career. He was admitted as a Knight in 1988 and a former trustee of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust.

His arrest came after detectives from the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command began an investigation into the possession of child abuse material in the local area.

One of Australia's most prominent businessman has been arrested and charged for alleged possession of child pornography.

Millionaire businessman Sir Ron Brierley has been charged for alleged possession of child pornography.

In a statement, NSW Police said the 82-year-old was arrested at Sydney International Airport on Tuesday about 6.30am.

Mr Brierley, who was born in New Zealand, became one of Australia's most feared corporate raiders and retired this year after a 60-year career. He was admitted as a Knight in 1988 and a former trustee of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust.

His arrest came after detectives from the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command began an investigation into the possession of child abuse material in the local area.

Mr Brierley, who lives in the exclusive Sydney suburb of Point Piper, was stopped by Australian Border Force officers at the airport and NSW Police were contacted.

His carry-on luggage was searched, and the contents of his laptop and electRonic storage devices was reviewed.

NSW Police allege the electRonic devices contained large amounts of child abuse material.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with six counts of possess child abuse material.

He has been granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Monday, February 10, 2020.

Once-feared corporate raider Ron Brierley has been released from jail after his sentence for possessing child abuse material was reduced.

The multi-millionaire New Zealander businessman had his knighthood revoked when authorities stopped him at the airport before he boarded a plane to Fiji and found thousands of the images with more discovered at his Point Piper house.

The 84-year-old's legal team challenged his 14 month term in Sydney's Long Bay jail earlier in February, citing a deterioration of his medical conditions.

His sentence had a non-parole period of seven months, which was due to expire on May 13, but he was deemed eligible for release three months earlier after the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal allowed the challenge on February 1.

Justices Robert Beech-Jones, Ian Harrison and Des Fagan re-sentenced Brierley to 10 months with a non-parole period of four months.

Noting Brierley's declining health, his barrister Tim Game SC particularly referred to the inability of the jail's medical services to deal with the aftermath of the removal of skin cancers from his leg.

While a dermatologist said he needed to be hospitalised for three weeks after surgery which included a skin graft, he was returned to his cell on the same day.

Despite the need for dressing changes on his large wound, Brierley had to rely on help from another inmate and the stitches broke.

'The resources of Justice Health to deal with a geriatric prisoner are stretched beyond capability, at least with respect to this man,' Justice Fagan said.

Brierley - who amassed a fortune of estimated at $200 million through his corporate raids and ventures - was stopped by Australian Border Force officers at Sydney Airport as he was preparing to board a flight to Fiji about 6.30am on December 17, 2019.

'The man's carry-on luggage was searched before the contents of his laptop and electRonic storage devices were reviewed, which are alleged to have contained large amounts of child abuse material,' police previously said.

A search was then conducted of his house in the exclusive Sydney harbourside suburb of Point Piper where thousands more images were found.

Brierley pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing child abuse material with more than 40,000 images, many being duplicates, of prepubescent girls in swimwear, underwear or other clothing, in sexually suggestive poses being found.

He also had two sexually explicit stories involving child victims and an image of a naked girl posing on a bed.

The charges led to his being stripped of his knighthood after the NZ Prime Minister led calls and his name was erased from the many organisations he worked with.

Brierley's arrest followed a four-month investigation by detectives after an anonymous tip-off in August 2019.

Disgraced New Zealand businessman Ron Brierley has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for possessing tens of thousands of child abuse images and videos, completing his "radical" fall from grace.

Brierley was stopped at Sydney International Airport in late 2019 when attempting fly to Fiji for a holiday.

When a large collection of child abuse material was found on the financier's laptop and two USB drives, he told police it was freely available online and that he found the images "interesting".

"I reckon they're all, they are perfectly OK," he said in a recorded conversation.

Brierley said he last looked at the material the night before "for recreation", but initially denied it was for a sexual purpose.

Police found thousands more images on other devices at his home in Point Piper, a harbourside suburb of Sydney.

In total, there were 46,794 files, however the New South Wales District Court heard there was a significant amount of duplication.

The 84-year-old pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing child abuse material.

In sentencing, Judge Sarah Huggett today rejected Brierley's suggestion that he mistakenly believed the material was legal.

She said the children depicted were between the ages of four and 15, although most were 11 or 12.

"The offender has disclosed a lifelong obsession and sexual attraction to pre-pubescent girls and stated that he used the images to masturbate," she said.

Judge Huggett said there was no suggestion Brierley was part of a "collaborative network" of like-minded individuals.

She noted Brierley's deteriorating health and his lawyer's submission that his medical needs would not be able to be managed in custody.

However, the judge said that, even allowing for duplication, the quantity of material was "vast" and a sentence served in the community would be inadequate.

Brierley was handed a jail term of 14 months, with a non-parole period of seven months which will expire in May 2022.

The court was told Brierly's fall from grace had been "radical".

Many charitable and philanthropic organisations have severed ties with him, even erasing his name from various patRonages.

This meant significant contributions have been "literally expunged", Judge Huggett acknowledged.

The judge accepted there was ample evidence that Brierley was a polite, respectful, humble man who was remorseful.

Devices found at the airport also contained documents detailing sexual fantasies about the abuse of girls aged nine and 11, which Brierley claimed he was sent from someone in the United States.

Brierley told a psychiatrist he believed he had overcome his sexual interest in young girls and was now "repulsed by the whole thing".

His company, Brierley Investments, grew to become one of New Zealand's biggest companies after it was founded in 1961.

Brierley was knighted in 1988 for his services to business management and the community, but was forced to relinquish that title in May this year following his guilty pleas.

He has mentored business leaders in Australia and was a former trustee of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust.

Brierley stepped down from his last role in a listed company in June 2019, citing health issues.

The New Zealand-born Brierley lost his knightship, has had his name "scrubbed" from cricket pavilions, and has become a social pariah, his barrister Tim Game SC said.

"Public recognition was a terribly important part of his own life and his image of himself," Mr Game said.

"The downfall has been complete to the point donations are not accepted or returned if given."

Mr Game said Brierley had dealt with his attraction to pre-pubescent girls for many years and it was a "significant affliction" and "disorder" for the businessman.

"He has kept this to himself and has been troubled by it for a long period of time," Mr Game said.

"Maybe because he's been forced to - he does appreciate the seriousness of the wRong done."

The court has previously heard Brierley believed the images were "perfectly okay", available online and he looked at them for "recreation".

Crown Prosecutor Sean Hughes urged Judge Sarah Huggett to reject any claim Brierley thought the images were legal.

"(The court should reject) the high-functioning Mr Brierley did not know that, at the very least, the image of the pubescent girl exposing her anus and genitals in a sexualised pose was other than illegal," he said.

Brierley is asking the judge to allow him to serve his time in the community on a release order.

Prosecutors acknowledge there won't be a lengthy time in prison but said these were "real girls" in the images collected by Birerley and punishment would be needed to send a message to others.

"A message has to be sent to those in the community who sit in a darkened room with little fear of being caught that, if they are caught, they will be properly denounced," Mr Hughes said.

"Not by being stripped of their knighthood - but properly denounced by way of a meaningful, substantial penalty."

"They should expect a jail sentence, a heavy jail sentence."

Brierley's lawyers say he has suffered significant cognitive decline since the arrest in 2019 and he requires his vast resources to keep himself functioning.

He has the beginnings of dementia and vascular disease, Mr Game said, and has moved away from positions of responsibility.

Brierley did not appear in the Sydney court in person - neither did any of the lawyers - because the city's coRonavirus pandemic has forced all hearings to be conducted remotely.

Brierley will be sentenced in October and will remain on bail until then.

Ron Brierley told police child abuse images in his possession were 'perfectly OK'

Corporate titan Ron Brierley had more than 10,000 images of child abuse material in his possession when he was arrested at Sydney Airport in 2019, telling police he thought they were "perfectly OK" and he looked at them for recreation, court documents reveal.

Brierley, 84, had been on his way to Fiji when Australian Border Force officers stopped him on December 17. He unlocked his laptop, and the officers observed material that amounted to child abuse material.

A total of 11,765 child images were found on his laptop and two USBs, some of which were duplicates. Brierley also had two sexually explicit written stories, detailing the abuse of children, and an almost two-hour video of six young girls in their swimmers.

According to agreed facts, tendered to Downing Centre District Court on Friday, Brierley was taken to a private room by police and informed officers had located "a number of images and videos".

"I reckon they're all, they're perfectly okay," Brierley responded.

He said the images were freely available on the internet, and he downloaded them because they "looked interesting". Brierley said he looked at the images for "recreation" and he had most recently looked at them the night before.

He denied looking at the images for a sexual purpose. Asked if the photos were sexually suggestive, Brierley responded: "Depends what you mean by sexually suggestive".

Brierley admitted to reading the written stories, which detailed the abuse of a 9-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl. He said he had received them from the United States and hadn't been sent any for a long time.

Later that day, police raided his home in the affluent Sydney suburb of Point Piper and seized one laptop and 12 USBs, which contained a combined total of 35,030 child abuse images, some of which were duplicates. The youngest of the children appeared to be about four years old.

It is not known how long Brierley possessed the images, how he organised them, or how frequently he accessed them.

"He appears to have duplicated folders and images across multiple devices. The full extent of the duplication is not known," the agreed facts state.

Brierley - who made his name as a corporate raider in New Zealand and Australia in the 1980s - pleaded guilty in April to three counts of possessing child abuse material. The charge has a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.

The former board member of the Sydney Cricket Ground trust was knighted in 1988 in his native New Zealand for his contribution to business and the community.

However, after he pleaded guilty, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern indicated she would begin a process to strip Brierley of his knighthood.

In a statement earlier this month, Ardern said Brierley was written to on April 6, giving him 30 days to respond, and responded tendering his resignation as a Knight Bachelor.

Brierley, who is a dual Australian and New Zealand citizen, has no criminal history in either jurisdiction.

He will face a sentencing hearing on August 20.

Sydney-based former corporate titan Ronald Brierley has forfeited his knighthood after pleading guilty to possessing child abuse material and reaching a deadline imposed by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

The 83-year-old millionaire, originally from New Zealand but living in Point Piper in Sydney's east, was knighted in 1988 for his contribution to business and the community.

He was arrested and charged in December 2019 after police discovered "large amounts of child abuse material" in his carry-on luggage when he was stopped at Sydney International Airport.

Ardern set the process in motion to remove the title after Brierley faced Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney on April 1. He pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing child abuse material.

"The Clerk of the Executive Council wrote to him on 6 April 2021 on behalf of the Prime Minister, giving him 30 days in which to provide any information that he considered relevant before the Prime Minister made her decision," a statement from Ardern's office said on Tuesday. The 30-day deadline ended this week.

"Ron Brierley has written to the Clerk of the Executive Council to tender his resignation as a Knight Bachelor. The Queen has been informed."

The corporate raider founded Brierley Investments - once New Zealand's largest listed company - and also served on the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust board.

Ardern said Brierley's history had been "undoubtedly" rewritten and if the knighthood had not been surrendered, "it would have been removed".

"I think it's a sad day for the children of New Zealand and, indeed, the world when someone is found guilty of possessing such horrendous images," she said.

His barrister Lisa-Claire Hutchinson told the court in April her client admitted to being in possession of some images, but the exact figure was "in dispute" and lower than the police allege.

In court documents, it is detailed that one of the charges Brierley pleaded guilty to relates to possessing "photographs of young girls approximately two years to 15 years of age, in sexually suggestive poses".

The second charge relates to possessing 1615 images on a data storage device, while the third charge relates to possessing one image.

Brierley joins a list of public figures to be stripped of royal honours in recent years.

The Queen last year directed former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein's appointment as an Honorary Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2004 be cancelled and annulled, and his name erased from the register.

Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison over the rape and sexual assault of two women.

In 2015, at the order of Her Majesty, veteran entertainer Rolf Harris lost the Commander of the Order of the British Empire honour bestowed on him, one step below a knighthood, after being convicted and jailed for indecently assaulting four girls between 1968 and 1986.

Ardern on Tuesday said Brierley could no longer use the title "Sir" and must return his insignia.

He has been committed to the NSW District Court for sentence and his case is next listed in Sydney on May 21.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has asked for the process to strip Sir Ron Brierley of his knighthood to begin following his guilty plea to charges of possession of child sexual abuse material.

Wellington College has also said it will strip Brierley's name from signage in the school.

The Wellington-raised businessman pleaded guilty to three out of 17 charges in a Sydney court this morning. The rest were withdrawn.

Brierley, 83, was detained by Australian Border Force officials while attempting to board a flight from Sydney to Fiji in December 2019. Detectives seized his carry-on bags, laptop and electRonic-storage units and allegedly discovered more than 200,000 images and 512 videos.

On Thursday, a spokesman for the prime minister said Ardern had asked for the process for Brierley to forfeit his title to be initiated.

Stop Demand, an organisation seeking to stop the sexual exploitation of women and children, joined calls for Brierley to lose his title.

Founder Denise Ritchie said, "the trade in material featuring children being sexually violated, raped and sexually denigrated would have to be one of the most abhorrent trades seen today, and needs to be denounced in the stRongest possible terms".

"We would argue that the crimes to which [Brierley] has pleaded guilty to brings the honours system into disrepute."

Brierley was knighted in 1988 for services to business management.

National MP Simon Bridges has also called on Ardern to strip Brierley of his title.

Brierley is an old boy of Wellington College and has been a benefactor to the school, which has the Brierley Theatre and Sir Ron Brierley Turf.

"Wellington College began removing all signage referring to Sir Ron Brierley from the school following confirmation of his guilty plea," Wellington College Board Chairperson, Paul Retimanu said.

Brierley was known for his love of cricket and stamp collecting.

Last year, Brierley was removed as a patRon of Cricket Wellington. At the time the organisation declined to comment as to why. He remained as a life member.

Former Wellington city councillor and New Zealand cricketer John Morrison criticised Cricket Wellington for "dumping" Brierley before legal proceedings had concluded.

Morrison, a Cricket Wellington life member, declined to comment on Thursday when approached by Stuff.

In a statement, Cricket Wellington chief executive officer Cam Mitchell said the sporting body was shocked to hear of the guilty plea, and Brierley's status as a life member would be reviewed.

Cricket Wellington had not received a donation from the businessman since October 2017, he said.

The body would not be commenting further until the review of Brierley's Life Member status was complete.

Stamp dealer John Mowbray, a longtime friend of Brierley's also declined to comment. Both Morrison and Mowbray had been unaware of this morning's court proceedings.

Writer Yvonne van Dongen wrote the 1990 biography Brierley, the Man Behind the Corporate Legend. She told Stuff the charges and today's guilty plea were consistent with material broached in her book which included his frequent trips to Asia when he enjoyed encounters with young women, including teenage prostitutes.

"I'm not surprised given his behaviour as described in my book. These charges are not a million miles away from that."

Police are only halfway through studying alleged abuse material found on the computer of multi-millionaire Sir Ron Brierley.

Multi-millionaire corporate knight Sir Ron Brierley will remain holed up in his luxury mansion under strict bail conditions over child pornography charges as a Sydney court heard police say they were only half way through studying alleged abuse material on his computer.

The 82-year-old famed businessman, who is charged with six counts of possess child abuse material, was not required to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday.

A brief hearing before NSW Chief Magistrate Graeme Henson heard that police prosecutors need more time to examine material allegedly found in Sir Ron's possession.

Last year police allege they found more than 200,000 images and 500 videos on his laptop and electRonic storage devices, among which police allege was material "consistent with child abuse material".

Chief Magistrate Henson told the court that some urgency was warranted by prosecutors given the matter had been before the courts for close on six months.

"Given the nature of the defendant I suspect they'll be jumping up and down," he said.

As revealed by news.com.au, the child abuse material allegations against Sir Ronald contain disturbing allegations.

Court documents seen by news.com.au reveal charges against the 82-year-old include possessing images and videos allegedly of "young girls aged between approximately two years to 15 years in sexually suggestive poses".

Two of the six counts of possess child abuse material Sir Ron is charged with are "typed stories that spoke of the rape of children".

The famed corporate raider is currently on strict conditional bail living in his mansion at Sydney's most exclusive address, Wunulla Road, Point Piper.

His lawyer told the court in an earlier hearing that Sir Ronwas intending to plead not guilty to the charges, however no formal pleas have yet been entered.

Sir Ron, who is both a chairman or director of a number of companies in Australia, NZ and the UK, was stopped by Australian Border Force officers at Sydney International Airport on December 17.

Acting on a NSW Police travel alert after a six-month investigation sparked by a tip-off from a member of the public, detectives seized Sir Ron's carry-on luggage.

Sir Ron was taken to Mascot Police Station, charged and granted bail, which Registrar James Wiseman continued on Monday.

Brierley, who emigrated to Australia from New Zealand in the 1980s, received a knighthood in 1988.

His firm Brierley Investments was once New Zealand's biggest company with stakes in Air New Zealand and the Paris department store, Galeries Lafayette.

In Australia he forged a glittering corporate career.

Sir Ron Brierley expected to plead not guilty to child abuse charges

Millionaire businessman and former corporate raider Sir Ron Brierley is expected to plead not guilty to charges of possessing hundreds of thousands of child abuse images and videos and "typed stories" about "the rape of children".

Sir Ron appeared at the Downing Centre Local Court on Monday using a cane for his first court appearance, less than two months after he was arrested at Sydney International Airport.

The 82-year-old was detained by Australian Border Force officials while attempting to board an early morning flight from Sydney to Fiji in December. Detectives seized his carry-on bags, laptop and electRonic storage units and allegedly discovered more than 200,000 images and 512 videos.

He was subsequently charged with six counts of possessing child exploitation material.

The charges against Sir Ron include possessing images and videos of "young girls aged between approximately two and 15 years of age in sexually suggestive poses", court documents state.

Two of the charges relate to the alleged possession of documents, "being typed stories that spoke of the rape of children".

On Monday Sir Ron's defence lawyer Penny Musgrave told the court her client was intending to plead not guilty to the charges against him, however she said a plea was yet to be formally entered.

The matter returns to court on April 2, when Sir Ron has been excused from attending.

The investigation into the recently retired corporate titan was prompted by an anonymous tip to NSW Police in August last year. His airport arrest four months later came after a travel alert was issued by police. He has since been on strict conditional bail that requires him to live at his Point Piper mansion.

Sir Ron made his reputation in Australia and his native New Zealand by targeting poorly run and undervalued companies. He was worth nearly $200 million in the late 1980s and was widely considered one of the most admired and feared corporate raiders operating in Australia.

Born and raised in Wellington, Sir Ron had already made his mark in New Zealand business circles when he emigrated to Australia in the 1980s. By 1988 he had been knighted for his "services to business management and the community".

In December 2015, Sir Ron, through his new company, Mercantile Investment, launched a hostile takeover of Australian shipping company Richfield International. Late last year, he spearheaded a bid, through Mercantile, for Mark Bouris' wealth management company Yellow Brick Road. Mr Bouris rejected the bid as "grossly inadequate".

Sir Ron stepped down from Mercantile in June, citing "age and ill health".

One of Australia's most prominent businessman has been arrested and charged for alleged possession of child pornography.

Millionaire businessman Sir Ron Brierley has been charged for alleged possession of child pornography.

In a statement, NSW Police said the 82-year-old was arrested at Sydney International Airport on Tuesday about 6.30am.

Mr Brierley, who was born in New Zealand, became one of Australia's most feared corporate raiders and retired this year after a 60-year career. He was admitted as a Knight in 1988 and a former trustee of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust.

His arrest came after detectives from the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command began an investigation into the possession of child abuse material in the local area.

Mr Brierley, who lives in the exclusive Sydney suburb of Point Piper, was stopped by Australian Border Force officers at the airport and NSW Police were contacted.

His carry-on luggage was searched, and the contents of his laptop and electRonic storage devices was reviewed.

NSW Police allege the electRonic devices contained large amounts of child abuse material.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with six counts of possess child abuse material.

He has been granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Monday, February 10, 2020.
