Execs At Over 20 Companies Agree To Forfeit, Freeze, Or Cut Salaries Or Bonuses Amid Virus Fallout

Believe it or not, corporate executives are reportedly slashing some of their pay as a result of the coronavirus.

Despite what Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders would have you believe about the rich, they apparently have at least some sympathy for other human beings: executives and boards at more than 20 companies agreed to cut, freeze or forfeit their salaries or bonuses in recent weeks.

The companies include those who work in travel, airport baggage and jewelry sales, among others, according to Bloomberg.

Some cuts were made as part of broader cuts due to industries like travel collapsing - but other executives cut voluntarily as a show of solidarity with their employees.

Michael Maslansky, CEO of communications advisory firm maslansky + partners said: "Whenever a CEO asks for concessions in times of financial strain, the first question is almost always: 'Are you feeling the pain, too?' The only way to make an employee-wide pay cut possible is if management leads by example."

The most prominent reductions have come from airlines. Thai airways said senior executives would surrender 25% of their salaries for 6 months. El Al Israel Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Australia's Qantas Airways, U.K.-based Virgin Atlantic, Sweden's SAS and Cebu Air have all followed suit.

United will see its top two executives give up their salaries until midyear and Southwest's CEO will take a cut of 10%. Robin Hayes of JetBlue will surrender 20% of base pay. Delta's CEO is also reportedly considering a reduction.

The concessions won't have a major impact on each company's financials, nor will they have a profound impact for most executives' quality of life.

Robin Ferracone, CEO of executive-compensation advisory firm Farient Advisors said: "Widespread cuts probably hurt people lower down in the organization more than the people at the top since a significant part of compensation at the top is comprised of incentives, which presumably are not cut."

And it's not just airlines feeling the pain. Singapore's national post office will cut and freeze pay for upper lever managers and Hong Kong based jeweler Chow Tai Fook is making its directors take a 30% pay cut through April.

North Carolina GOP chairman steps down after federal bribery, fraud charges

The chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party is stepping down from his post, after he was charged on federal bribery and wire fraud counts.
The state GOP said Wednesday that Chairman Robin Hayes would cede control to a regional party leader, but would keep the title of chairman until a new election for the post in June.
Hayes, who served from 1999 to 2009 in Congress, and Greg Lindberg, the founder and chairman of Eli Global LLC and owner of Global Bankers Insurance Group, were among four people charged in the federal indictments unsealed on Tuesday.

Hayes, Lindberg and his two associates are accused of trying to sway an insurance regulator's decisions in favor of the donor's insurance companies. Federal prosecutors said that the four individuals promised or gave Republican Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey millions of campaign dollars to do things Lindberg wanted, including seeking the removal of a deputy insurance commissioner responsible for oversight of one of Lindberg's businesses.
Hayes also was charged with three counts of making false statements to the FBI.
FBI agents interviewed Hayes in August 2018 about his involvement with and knowledge of the alleged misconduct and alleged improper campaign contributions. During that interview, Hayes allegedly lied to FBI agents about directing funds at Lindberg's request, among other things.
A lawyer for Hayes reportedly said his client "steadfastly" denies the allegations.

"Greg Lindberg is innocent of the charges in the indictment and we look forward to demonstrating this when we get our day in court," Lindberg's attorney Anne Tompkins also told Fox News.

"The indictment unsealed today outlines a brazen bribery scheme in which Greg Lindberg and his coconspirators allegedly offered hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions in exchange for official action that would benefit Lindberg's business interests," Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski said in a statement. "Bribery of public officials at any level of government undermines confidence in our political system. The Criminal Division will use all the tools at our disposal-including the assistance of law-abiding public officials-to relentlessly investigate and prosecute corruption wherever we find it."
The indictment amounted to the latest political scandal to rock the state. Earlier this year, an operative allegedly at the center of a ballot fraud scandal was indicted for illegal possession of absentee ballots and obstruction of justice.
This was after the North Carolina State Board of Election decided to call a new election in the 9th congressional district because of questions surrounding the legitimacy of the victory claimed by Republican Mark Harris, who had hired the later-indicted operative.

GOP Rep. Mark Walker entangled in federal corruption probe in North Carolina

Republican Rep. Mark Walker has been caught up in a federal corruption probe that has rocked the North Carolina Republican Party and led to the indictment of former Rep. Robin Hayes.

A Walker-controlled political committee received $150,000 from business owner Greg Lindberg at the same time Lindberg allegedly asked him to pressure North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey to replace his deputy, according to criminal indictment unsealed on Tuesday.

Walker, a member of GOP leadership, is not named in the indictment. However, POLITICO has identified him as "Public Official A" using the indictment and Federal Election Commission records.

The Justice Department announced indictments of four people Tuesday on charges of public corruption and bribery, including Lindberg and Hayes, the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party until earlier this week. Lindberg and two of his associates allegedly tried to bribe Causey, who was working with federal authorities and not charged in the probe, to oust North Carolina Department of Insurance's senior deputy commissioner. Lindberg allegedly sought more favorable treatment of his company in the state.

Texts and emails released by the DOJ said Walker was part of Lindberg's scheme to pressure Causey over the personnel move. Causey alerted law enforcement officials to what was happening in January 2018, according to the indictment.

The indictment mentions several contacts Walker reportedly had with Causey in support of Lindberg's secret campaign.

"Just between the 3 of us ... [Public Official A] has already made two calls on our behalf and is trying to help us move the ball forward," one of Lindberg's associates wrote in a Feb. 12, 2018, email to Lindberg, according to the indictment. "I was also told that the $150,000 will be going to [Public Official A]."

FEC records show Lindberg donated to the Mark Walker Victory Committee on Feb. 17, 2018. Lindberg was the first donor to contribute to the committee, which was created only four days before his donation was recorded. The committee is a joint political fundraising committee between Walker's reelection campaign and the Republican National Committee.

Earlier, Lindberg donated more than $78,000 to a different Walker-affiliated joint fundraising committee, according to FEC records. Lindberg, founder and chairman of Eli Global and the owner of Global Bankers Insurance Group, is a major donor to both political parties, though the overwhelming amount of his contributions were to Republicans.

Multiple people were indicted Tuesday on charges of public corruption and bribery, including Lindberg and Hayes. Lindberg and two of his associates allegedly tried to bribe Causey, who was working with authorities and not charged in the probe, to oust the North Carolina Department of Insurance's senior deputy commissioner.

Walker denied any wrongdoing in a brief interview with POLITICO, saying he has "seen the insurance commissioner at different Republican events."

"We're not even part of this investigation," Walker said of the federal criminal probe. "I'm not going to get into [that with] you with any kind of details. Two of those are constituents of mine. They reach out to me; one of them is the county chairman."

North Carolina Republican Party chairman charged in bribery case

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department said on Tuesday it had charged the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, Robert "Robin" Hayes, and a major political donor in a corruption scheme that targeted a state official.

According to an indictment unsealed on Tuesday, Hayes worked with business executive Greg Lindberg to bribe state insurance commissioner Mike Causey. Causey reported the effort to law enforcement officials and cooperated in the investigation, authorities say. The two men, along with insurance executives John Gray, 68, and John Palermo, 63, were charged with bribery and conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud. Hayes is also charged with lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. All four men pleaded not guilty.

Lawyers for Hayes and Lindberg said their clients looked forward to clearing their names in court. Lawyers for Gray and Palermo did not immediately respond to a request for comment. According to the indictment, the four men promised to spend millions of dollars on Causey's re-election if he would remove an insurance regulator that oversaw companies under Lindberg's control. They said they would set up independent campaign committees that would spend $1.5 million on Causey's re-election bid and funnel another $250,000 through the state Republican party. Hayes encouraged the others to transfer the money in smaller amounts to avoid detection, the indictment said. "My concern, any large amount like that's gonna draw attention," he said, according to the charges.

Lindberg is the founder and chairman of investment company Eli Global and the owner of Global Bankers Insurance Group, which controls several insurance companies. Neither company was charged, and Global Bankers said it was cooperating with the investigation. Lindberg is the state's biggest political donor in recent years, with total contributions of more than $5 million, mostly to Republicans, according to news site WRAL. Hayes served in the U.S. Congress from 1999 to 2009. He led the state party between 2011 and 2013, when it won a dominant majority in the state legislature, and again since 2016. He announced yesterday that he would step down from the position.

Lindberg and Gray also enlisted another public official, who made several calls to Causey on their behalf after they contributed $150,000 to a political committee supporting his candidacy, according to the indictment. That official, identified by Politico as U.S. Republican Representative Mark Walker, was not charged. A spokesman for Walker said he had committed no wrongdoing and had assisted the investigation.

The North Carolina Republican Party said it has been cooperating with the probe for several months. The party has suffered a series of setbacks after several years in which it controlled the state government, pushing through spending cuts, voting restrictions, and other conservative policies.

An absentee ballot fraud scheme run by a party operative has forced the rerun of a 2018 U.S. congressional election, and a federal court ruled last year that state Republicans illegally drew U.S. congressional districts to benefit their party. Democrat Roy Cooper was elected as governor in 2016, breaking the Republican grip on state politics, and Democrats made significant gains in state assembly elections last year.

Hayes was born in Concord, North Carolina, to Mariam Winslow (née Cannon) and Robert Griffith Hayes Jr. His great-grandfather James William Cannon founded the Cannon Mills Corporation, a Kannapolis-based textile company that was later run by his grandfather Charles Albert Cannon. He is also a descendent of Abraham Owen, a military officer killed at the Battle of Tippecanoe.[3]

Hayes graduated from Duke University. He was elected to the Concord city council in 1978 and to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1992 where he served two terms. He was the Republican nominee for governor in 1996, but was handily defeated by Democratic incumbent Jim Hunt. Hayes owns a hosiery mill in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina.

North Carolina GOP chair indicted on bribery charges

A federal grand jury indicted the chair of the North Carolina Republican Party and three others on bribery charges Tuesday, law enforcement officials announced.

Robin Hayes, the state GOP chair, and Greg Lindberg, a businessman and wealthy donor, are accused, along with two others, of engaging in a scheme to bribe North Carolina state Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey. Causey has not been charged.

The indictment, unsealed Tuesday, alleges that Lindberg, Hayes and two Lindberg associates, John Gray and John Palermo, sought to use independent expenditure accounts and improper campaign contributions to bribe Causey to make official decisions favorable to Lindberg's business.

According to the indictment, the four defendants offered Causey millions of dollars in campaign contributions, among other things, in exchange for the removal of his senior deputy commissioner.

Causey reported concerns about the political contributions to federal authorities and agreed to cooperate with an investigation into the matter, officials said.

"Bribery of public officials at any level of government undermines confidence in our political system," Brian Benczkowski, the assistant U.S. attorney general for the Justice Department's Criminal Division, said in a statement. "The Criminal Division will use all the tools at our disposal - including the assistance of law-abiding public officials - to relentlessly investigate and prosecute corruption wherever we find it."

Hayes also allegedly lied to FBI agents about his involvement in the scheme, particularly about directing Lindberg's contributions to the state GOP into Causey's reelection campaign, according to law enforcement officials.

Hayes has surrendered himself to authorities and made an initial appearance at a U.S. courthouse in Charlotte on Tuesday, WBTV reported.

News of the indictment came a day after Hayes, a former U.S. congressman, announced that he would not seek reelection as chair of the North Carolina Republican Party at its convention this summer.

The indictment is the latest controversy to rock North Carolina Republicans. Earlier this year, state election officials ordered a new election in the state's 9th Congressional District after a lengthy investigation into an alleged ballot-tampering scheme.

That scheme was allegedly led by a contractor for Mark Harris, the Republican candidate in the race. Harris has since bowed out of the new election. He has repeatedly denied personal wrongdoing.

North Carolina GOP Chairman Indicted In Latest Scandal For Party

North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes has been indicted by a federal grand jury, according to WBTV, part of an ongoing corruption probe that threatens to consume his party.

Hayes, a wealthy and powerful former congressman, has been at the center of GOP power in the state for three decades. He was the party's nominee for governor in 1996, served as a congressman from 1999 through 2009, and has been its party chairman from 2011 through 2013 and since 2016.

The indictment relates to major donations made by North Carolina businessman Greg Lindberg, who federal investigators have been investigating for white collar business crimes and his political contributions, according to WBTV.

Hayes announced on Monday that he would be stepping down as party chairman as of June, claiming complications from a recent hip surgery had convinced him to step down.

Republican Harris will not run again after tainted U.S. House election

(Reuters) - North Carolina Republican Mark Harris said on Tuesday that he will not run in the re-do of a U.S. House of Representatives election that drew national scrutiny because of ballot fraud. Harris attributed his decision to health concerns. He led by 905 votes in the Nov. 6 election, but state officials refused to certify him as the winner over Democrat Dan McCready. Last week they ordered a new election after finding the voting results were tainted.

The unanimous vote by North Carolina's bipartisan elections board followed four days of evidence showing an operative for Harris' campaign had orchestrated a ballot fraud scheme in the state's 9th Congressional District. Harris, a pastor who previously edged out then-incumbent Republican Congressman Robert Pittenger in a close primary, had sought for months to fend off a general election rerun. But on the final day of the hearing, he also called for a new election and acknowledged the public had lost confidence in November's result.

In an email on Tuesday, Harris, who is recovering from an infection last month that led to sepsis and two strokes, said residents of the district deserved a candidate "at full strength during the new campaign." McCready plans to run again, although a new election date has not yet been set. The outcome of the country's last unsettled 2018 congressional contest will not change the balance of power in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.

Months of mounting evidence of ballot fraud by the Harris campaign became an embarrassment to the Republican Party, which has accused Democrats without proof of encouraging individual voter fraud in races such as the 2016 presidential election. During the elections board hearing, Harris' son said he had warned his father of potential illegal activity by one of his political operatives, Leslie McCrae Dowless. Residents of at least two counties in the district testified that Dowless and his paid workers collected incomplete absentee ballots and, in some instances, falsely signed as witnesses and filled in votes for contests left blank. Dowless attended the hearing but declined to testify voluntarily after the board said it would deny him immunity. He has maintained his innocence, and Harris campaign officials said they did not pay Dowless to do anything illegal.

North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes said on Tuesday his party supported Harris' decision. He said multiple candidates were considering the race, and "we have no doubt that a competitive nominee will emerge." Wayne Goodwin, North Carolina's Democratic Party chairman, said the state investigation would dog Republicans no matter who jumps in.

North Carolina judge refuses to certify Republican as winner of U.S. House vote

(Reuters) - A North Carolina judge on Tuesday rejected Republican Mark Harris' bid to be certified as the winner of a congressional vote at the center of an election fraud investigation, saying doing so would be a "dramatic intervention." Harris claimed victory over Democrat Dan McCready, after initial results of the November election showed he had won the Ninth Congressional District race by 905 votes. Harris filed a petition earlier this month to certify the results of the vote.

Judge Paul Ridgeway said at a hearing in Raleigh, North Carolina, that it would be premature for him to intervene before the state elections board finished its investigation. "Certification is not appropriate until the investigation into the protest is concluded by final decision," the judge said, noting "it would be highly unusual for this court to step in."

Since the election, residents of rural Bladen County have stated in affidavits that people had come to their homes and collected incomplete absentee ballots. It is illegal in North Carolina for a third party to turn in absentee ballots. The State Board of Elections was to hold a hearing on Jan. 11 as part of its probe into possible election fraud involving the collection of absentee ballots. But Republicans refused to participate in the creation of an interim election board, which has left the race in limbo. Lawyers for McCready and the state elections board told the judge on Tuesday that completion of the investigation was necessary because it could reveal evidence that calls into question the results of the vote. Lawyers for Harris urged the judge to certify Harris as the district's new congressman, saying there was nothing to contradict him as the winner and residents needed representation in Washington. Neither candidate attended Tuesday's hearing. Harris' campaign said he was dealing with an illness.

A new state elections board will go into effect on Jan. 31. Board members will be able to call for an evidentiary hearing and could order a new vote. The U.S. House of Representatives also could rule on the election outcome. "We are pleased that Harris' frivolous request has been denied and that North Carolina can get back to investigating allegations of systematic electoral fraud committed on behalf of Harris' campaign," Wayne Goodwin, North Carolina's Democratic Party chairman, said in a statement. North Carolina GOP calls for new election as fraud evidence mounts in House race

The head of the North Carolina Republican Party and the Republican candidate for Congress in the state's 9th District both said the state should hold a new election if allegations of fraud and leaked early votes prove true, according to The Hill.

The election has not been certified by the state board of elections due to evidence of fraud involving absentee mail-in ballots in Bladen County.

"We can never tolerate the state putting its thumb on the scale," said North Carolina GOP chair Robin Hayes said in a statement Tuesday. "The people involved in this must be held accountable and should it be true, this fact alone would likely require a new election."

The latest revelation in the fraud investigation is that early votes were counted before election day and shown to people who were not election officials. The allegation comes via an affidavit from a Bladen County precinct worker.

What else is going on with the election? The issues with the election began when it was discovered that a group of people connected to a local political operative had been serving as witness to and collecting an abnormally large number of absentee mail-in votes, leading to concerns that the "ballot harvesting" scheme could've resulted in some absentee ballots not being turned in.

The operative, Leslie McCrae Dowless, was working for Republican candidate Mark Harris, allegedly tasked with getting out the vote. However, witnesses allege that Dowless was in possession of hundreds of absentee ballots that didn't get turned in to election officials. In North Carolina, only a direct family member can turn in an absentee ballot for someone.

More than one person has confessed to being paid by Dowless to witness and collect absentee mail-in ballots.

What does Harris say about all this? Harris has denied any knowledge of wrongdoing and said he will fully cooperate in any investigations, or support a new election if necessary.

"However, if this investigation finds proof of illegal activity on either side-to such a level that it could have changed the outcome of the election-then I would wholeheartedly support a new election to ensure all voters have confidence in the results," Harris said last week in a Twitter video.

Harris led after Election Day by 905 votes.

The state elections board has been investigating voting irregularities and potential absentee ballot tampering in Bladen and Robeson counties. Both rural counties saw an unusually high number of ballot requests, as well as a high number of unreturned ones.

Harris leads McCready by 905 votes in the race to replace Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-N.C.), but the state elections board voted to refuse certifying the results and will hold an evidentiary hearing about the fraud claims on or by Dec. 21.

Hayes's statement comes as Republicans are becoming more open to a new election in North Carolina's 9th District.

North Carolina GOP Executive Director Dallas Woodhouse has previously floated the possibility of a new election if the elections board "can show a substantial likelihood" that absentee ballot fraud changed the outcome of the election.

And Harris released a video statement on Friday saying that he'd be open to a new election if evidence emerges that illegal activity could have changed the outcome of the race.

He's been subpoenaed by the state elections board and said he's cooperating with the probe. He also said he was "absolutely unaware of any wrongdoing" in the November election.

Meanwhile, Democrats have been calling calling on Harris to answer questions related to the alleged fraud and his ties to Leslie McCrae Dowless, an independent contractor on his campaign who's at the center of the state's investigation.

McCready recently withdrew his concession and called on Harris to "end his silence and tell us exactly what he knew, and when."

Dowless has worked in Bladen County political circles for years and was convicted of perjury and fraud in the 1990s.

Several absentee ballot witnesses told WSOC-TV that Dowless paid them to collect absentee ballots and weren't informed that the actions are illegal in North Carolina.

Records analyzed by CNN found that Dowless submitted more than half of absentee ballots in Bladen.

The state elections board has been investigating voting irregularities and potential absentee ballot tampering in Bladen and Robeson counties. Both rural counties saw an unusually high number of ballot requests as well as a high number of unreturned ones.

The board is slated to hold an evidentiary hearing by Dec. 21 after deciding not to certify the results from the election, though the time and place have yet to be scheduled. But the fate of the board remains in limbo since it was ruled unconstitutional.

The state elections board has the authority to call a new election, which would prompt only a rematch between Harris, McCready and Libertarian candidate Jeff Scott.

But according to local media reports, a new elections board bill being considered by the North Carolina General Assembly could instead trigger a new primary and general if the board called for a reset on the race.
