Even NATO is against it…
NATO state blasts 'senseless' Biden missile U-turn
The US allowing Ukraine to attack Russia isn't helping, Slovakia's Robert Fico has said
Lifting restrictions on Ukraine's use of US-supplied long-range missiles against targets deep into Russian territory is senseless and counterproductive, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said.
Biden has reportedly removed the restrictions on Ukraine's use of ATACMS missiles, according to a New York Times report on Sunday. The White House has made no official statements.
"This is an unprecedented escalation of tensions," Fico said on Monday, calling it an attempt to negatively affect the policies of US President-elect Donald Trump and "frustrate and delay" any peace talks.
Fico added that he was surprised by the speed with which some EU member states welcomed the reported move.
"This is simply a confirmation that the European Union is not capable of formulating fundamental foreign policy positions on its own, and that the West wants the war in Ukraine to continue at any cost," the Slovak PM said.
Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kalinak and Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar have been instructed to "oppose this American decision on any world forum," Fico noted.
Bratislava "strongly disagrees" with the US decision, viewing it as a "senseless" move that threatens Slovakia's national interests, according to Fico. As Ukraine's neighbor, Slovakia wants to see the conflict end as soon as possible.

President Vladimir Putin warned in September that the use of Western weapons on Russia's internationally recognised territory would "significantly change the nature of the conflict." According to Putin, it would mean that "NATO countries are directly involved in the military conflict" with Russia, as their personnel would have to be involved in the targeting process.
Slovakia is a member of both the EU and NATO, but Fico has dissented from the policy of both blocs regarding their unconditional support for Kiev, and has joined neighboring Hungary's calls for a ceasefire and peace instead.

Delivery of jets to Kiev was 'illegal' - NATO member IS Illegal
The Slovak government had no right to send the MiG-29 planes to Ukraine in 2023, a senior defense official said
The previous government in Bratislava had no right to donate the Soviet-era MiG-29 warplanes to Kiev, State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Defense Igor Melicher has said.
In March 2023, the interim government of Prime Minister Eduard Heger authorized the delivery of 13 MiG-29s, according to the Slovak national broadcaster TASR. The new government led by Robert Fico has since requested a legal review of the shipment.
"The MiG-29 fighter jets were delivered to Ukraine illegally,"Melicher wrote on Facebook on Tuesday. He added that the Defense Ministry is "preparing a legal action."
Melicher made his statement after ombudsman Robert Dobrovodsky, who was tasked with reviewing the delivery of the aircraft, revealed that the government has failed to find the required legal analysis of the possibility of donating the MiG-29s to Kiev.
"The ministry recently told me that it was trying to comply with the request and find the analysis. However, it said that neither it nor any of its branches had the analysis at their disposal," Dobrovodsky told TASR on Tuesday. "It also stated that the analysis isn't even registered in its databases in any form."
Melicher has argued that Heger's caretaker government had no right to make final decisions on delivering the planes abroad. "The Constitution forbids an interim government to take major steps in foreign policy, and sending fighter jets worth more than ?500 million ($537 million) is certainly such a step," he wrote.
Prime Minister Robert Fico, who survived an assassination attempt by a pro-Ukrainian activist last month, has opposed sending arms to Kievand insisted that the conflict should be resolved through diplomacy.
Defense Minister Robert Kalinak has also criticized his predecessor, saying in May that the previous government had acted "in the most irresponsible way when it handed over [the weapons] that we needed for our own safety."
Kiev has been pressing its Western backers to expedite the planned delivery of US-made F-16 fighters. Politico magazine reported this month that Ukrainian officials were "frustrated" with how the existing training programs in the US and other countries had not been producing enough pilots for the F-16s.
Russia, for its part, has warned that no amount of Western military aid would deter its military operation in the neighboring state.

Slovak PM's condition 'remains very serious' - deputy
Robert Fico was hospitalized with gunshot wounds this week
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico remains in serious condition after surviving an assassination attempt, his deputy Robert Kalinak said on Saturday.
Fico was attacked on Wednesday in the central Slovak city of Handlova. When he approached a group of spectators, one person pulled out a handgun and shot the politician multiple times at close range. Fico was immediately rushed to the hospital, and the assailant was detained on the spot.
Kalinak, who also serves as defense minister, spoke to the news channel TA3 outside the Roosevelt Hospital in Banska Bystrica, where Fico is being treated. He remained cautiously optimistic about the prime minister's recovery.
"He is in stable condition, but the four gunshot wounds have caused extensive injuries,"Kalinak said. He added that Fico had undergone additional surgery, and that there still could be complications. "In any case, his condition is very serious."
Kalinak said that he had a brief conversation with the prime minister in the hospital, and thanked the doctors and the Slovak public to their support. "I ask everyone for a little bit more patience and a strong belief that everything will turn from bad to good," he said.
The authorities identified the suspect as a 71-year-old former security guard named Juraj Cintula. He was placed in pre-detention on Saturday.
Although the suspect's exact motives remain unclear, the government believes that the attack was politically motivated. Many leading politicians have linked the assassination attempt to "hateful rhetoric" and the politically charged climate in the country.
Fico is a polarizing figure in the EU due to his position regarding the conflict in Ukraine. The politician has repeatedly urged against further escalation with Russia and suspended the deliveries of weapons to Kiev.

Slovakia faces 'civil war' - interior minister
The attempt to kill Prime Minister Robert Fico stems from a combustible political environment in the country, a top official has said
Slovakia appears to be on the brink of a civil war, its interior minister has warned, following the attempted assassination of Prime Minister Robert Fico on Wednesday.
The head of the Slovak government was shot in the eastern town of Handlova, where he had chaired a working meeting. The gunman, identified by the media as an opposition party supporter in his early 70s, acted on political motives, according to Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak.
Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok warned that the country was "on the edge of a civil war"over political tensions. Social media is full of "hateful comments" in the wake of the attack, he added.
Meanwhile, according to Kalinak, who spoke to journalists outside the hospital in the city of Banska Bystrica, where Fico was rushed for emergency surgery, "the inability to accept the will of some part of the public, which some group does not like, is the result that they have worked towards today."
Fico, a nationalist and euro-skeptic, assumed office last year, after his Smer-SD party won the parliamentary election in September. He promised to put Slovakia's interests first, including in the highly-contentious issue of the Ukraine conflict. His refusal to provide more arms to Kiev stood in sharp contrast to the previous government.
His victory was a defeat for Progressive Slovakia (PS), which suffered a second electoral upset in April. The presidential candidate endorsed by the pro-EU party was defeated by Peter Pellegrini. PS co-founder Zuzana Caputova is set to complete her term as president next month.
Fico has lashed out at comments coming from supporters of the opposition, particularly those upset by the waning power of the Progressives. He has also accused some media outlets of fanning the flames.
Some Slovaks are denouncing supporters of political forces they do not like as "misguided blind folk" that they are ashamed to have as their neighbors, he lamented in a video statement last month. Politicians face obscenities in the streets, he added.
"I expect this frustration to turn so intense that it could lead to the murder of one of the leading government officials,"Fico warned.
Many Slovak politicians and foreign leaders have condemned the attempt on Fico's life. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Slovak leader was a "courageous and strong-spirited man," and that those qualities would hopefully help him overcome the crisis. Fico's deputy, Tomas Taraba, said his surgery was a success and that the prime minister is expected to recover.

Slovak PM Robert Fico Expected To Survive; UK Media Appears To Justify Assassination Attempt
Prime Minister Fico is said to be improving, following reports that he was in surgery due to several gunshot wounds from the Wednesday assassination attempt. Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba has told the BBC he "is not in a life-threatening situation at this moment."
"Fortunately, as far as I know, the operation went well - and I guess in the end he will survive," the statement indicated.
Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak has told reporters in a briefing that "there is no doubt" that the attack was a politically motivated assassination attempt. "The inability to accept the will of some part of the public, which some group does not like, is the result that they have worked towards today," he said in reference to Fico's political opponents. A video is widely circulated of the detained suspect's interrogation wherein the man, identified as Juraj Cintula, confesses to saying he "disagreed" with his government's policies.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky condemned the attack on Fico. "Every effort should be made to ensure that violence does not become the norm in any country," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
After becoming prime minister for a third time in October 2023, Fico reversed the previous government's decision to send weapons to Ukraine. He also argued that the conflict between Ukraine and Russia should be resolved through diplomacy.
01:01 GMT
Officials and commentators have linked the shooting with incendiary rhetoric and an overall toxic political environment in the country.
"The political climate in Slovakia... was very polarized for a number of years," former government adviser Milan Nic told the BBC. He added that politicians in Slovakia have been receiving death threats, including outgoing President Zuzana Caputova.

President-elect Peter Pellegrini and Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenicky have decided to cut their foreign trips short and return to Bratislava.
Pellegrini described the attempt on Fico's life as "an unprecedented threat to Slovak democracy."

"There is no doubt" that the attack on Fico was a politically motivated assassination attempt, Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak told reporters outside the hospital in Banska Bystrica. "The inability to accept the will of some part of the public, which some group does not like, is the result that they have worked towards today," said the minister, seemingly referring to Fico's political opponents.
Earlier, TA3 News published a video in which the detained suspect told police that he shot Fico because he "disagreed" with his government's policies.
17:44 GMT
Fico's security detail was "not in order," the former head of the Office for the Protection of Constitutional Officials, Juraj Zabojnik, told Dennik N. "When four or five shots are fired, someone is guilty. I didn't see anyone jumping in front of the prime minister," Zabojnik said.
The security team should have placed operatives among the crowd, he continued, adding that while "it may happen that the first shot gets out," Fico should have been shielded from any subsequent shots.
"When something like this happens and with such a large body of security personnel, it will be a very tough subject of investigation," Zabojnik concluded.

The terrifying "assassination attempt" took place in Handlova, a town located 93 miles northeast of the country's capital Bratislava. The Slovakian Government confirmed that he is in "life-threatening condition" after being transported by helicopter, from a local hospital to one in the capital.
In a public update, the Slovakian Minister of Interior Robert Kalinak said: "Slovakia has never been confronted with a situation like this".
He thanked emergency services, nurses and specialists at the hospital, "still fighting" for the PM's life.
"He's still in surgery, he suffered serious trauma after several shots. His health is pretty serious, the situation is bad," he added.
He added: "We hope he is strong enough to deal with this trauma."
Fico, a staunch ally of Russia's President Vladimir Putin, is still under surgery after sustaining injuries to his head and chest, according to an eyewitness at the scene, who told MNT.SK that she heard "three of four shots".
Reports confirmed the surgeons had to remove four bullets from his body.
He fell to the ground as emergency services swarmed the scene.
A suspect has been detained, according to local news station TA3, with a dramatic video showing the moment they were arrested.
A loud commotion can be heard, as police officers can be seen swarming the alleged attacker while sirens can be heard blaring in the distance.
The country's president later confirmed a suspect is in custody in a televised statement. Fico was taken by helicopter to a hospital.
The motive for the shooting was unclear. Express.co.uk has contacted the Slovakian Police for comment.
