MACON, Ga. - A Mexican national and member of the Sinaloa Cartel, who was involved in a major methamphetamine and cocaine distribution organization out of Monroe, Georgia, and discussed his frustration with no longer receiving "busloads" of illegal drugs and preparing for a visit by the son of Sinaloa's leader was sentenced to serve more than 15 years in prison for his crime resulting from an Operation Take Back America investigation led by the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations.

Jose Guadalupe Favela, 68, a citizen of Mexico and legally in the United States as a resident of Riverdale, Georgia, and formerly of Monroe, Georgia, was sentenced to 188 months in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Tilman E. "Tripp" Self, III on March 9. Favela pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of methamphetamine on Sept. 22, 2025.

"Jose Favela was a significant operative in the Sinaloa Cartel, responsible for facilitating the distribution of massive quantities of deadly drugs into Georgia," said U.S. Attorney William R. "Will" Keyes. "Thanks to the relentless efforts of the FBI and HSI, we dismantled this cartel pipeline and brought these criminals to justice."

"Jose Favela was a key member of the Sinaloa Cartel's drug trafficking operation, responsible for bringing deadly methamphetamine and cocaine into Georgia. His actions fueled a dangerous pipeline, impacting communities across the state," said Robert Gibbs, Supervisory Senior Resident Agent of FBI Georgia's Macon office. "Thanks to the tireless efforts of the FBI and HSI, this criminal enterprise has been dismantled, and those responsible for flooding our streets with illegal drugs will face justice."

"This sentencing demonstrates the unwavering commitment of Homeland Security Investigations and our partners to protect Georgia from the dangers posed by cartels and their drug trafficking operations," said Steven N. Schrank, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Georgia and Alabama. "Working alongside the FBI and local law enforcement, HSI agents dismantled a major criminal network, preventing massive quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine from reaching our communities. Favela's co-conspirators have all pleaded guilty and been sentenced to prison for their crimes:

Diego Garcia, 28, of Mexico and an illegal alien, was sentenced to 188 months in prison on Jan. 17, 2024, after he pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine on Sept. 7, 2023;

Luis Mejina Pina, aka "La Perra," 32, of Richmond, California, was sentenced to 48 months in prison on Dec. 3, 2025, after he pleaded guilty to one count of use of a communication facility to facilitate possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine on Sept. 18, 2025; and

Juan Pablo Torres, 32, of Mexico and an illegal alien, was sentenced to 48 months in prison on July 2, 2024, after he pleaded guilty to one count of use of a communication facility to facilitate possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine on March 15, 2024.

There is no parole in the federal system.

Former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has been hired by Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) to serve as the company's new chief communications executive, according to a report published this week.

On Tuesday, the Hollywood Reporter said Gibbs was hired to succeed Nathaniel Brown, who left earlier this year following a five-year career with the company and its predecessor, Discovery Communications.

Gibbs most recently served as a partner at Bully Pulpit International, a communications firm that counts McDonald's, General Mills, Walmart, the ACLU and the Biden-Harris campaign among its clients.

Gibbs served in the White House as President Barack Obama's press secretary from 2009 to 2011, before leaving the Obama administration to work as the chief communications officer at McDonald's.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Gibbs was selected both for his ability to coordinate effectively with top managers - including his ability to say "no" where needed - and his deep political background, which could come in handy when WBD needs to lobby lawmakers and other key federal stakeholders in Washington.

ROME- President Barack Obama's concerted efforts to woo the Catholic Church-and its American voters-got a major boost Friday as he had his first face-to-face audience with Pope Benedict XVI.

"It's a great honor to meet you, thank you so much," Obama said as the men shook hands in a Vatican hallway.
As the two men sat down at a desk in the papal library, Obama joked about the swarm of photographers.
"I'm sure you're used to having your picture taken.....and I'm getting used to it," the president said, flashing a broad grin.
"You must be tired," Pope Benedict said to the president.
Obama responded by saying his recent meetings at the G8 Summit in L'Aquila led to pledges of $20 billion in food aid for developing countries. "Which I thought was great progress," Obama said as photographers were shooed out.The two men met face-to-face in private for about 25 minutes.

Before the session got underway, top Obama introduced some of his top aides to the pontiff, including National Security Adviser Jim Jones, Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough, Deputy Chief of Staff Mona Sutphen, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs and Senior Adviser David Axelrod. Television coverage showed Gibbs and McDonough kissing the pope's ring. Axelrod simply shook hands and nodded.

As the pope met McDonough, Obama put in an extra plug for his adviser. "This is Denis McDonough. His brother is a priest," the president said.
Michelle Obama, wearing a black veil over her hair, also greeted the pope. An official told a pool reporter that the Obamas daughters, Malia and Sasha, also met the religious leader.
In advance of the session, the White House made a series of moves to emphasize what they described as the president's strong affinity for the Catholic Church. And Obama himself has spoken of the church having a "powerful" impact on his life, even though he is not a member.

President Donald Trump's lawyer was asked about presidential immunity on Tuesday, by Federal Judge Florence Pan. The specifics of the question surrounded if President Trump could order SEAL Team Six to assassinate an American citizen (or presidential candidate) and if Absolute Immunity would apply.

President Trump's attorney was prepared to answer the hypothetical question with a "qualified yes"; however, unfortunately the lawyer was not prepared to give Judge Pan a real-world example of this action that recently took place. It's not a hypothetical; it was done recently. President Obama did exactly this.

CITATION - "Anwar al-'Awlaq?; (April 1971 - 30 September 2011) was an American Islamic scholar and lecturer who was killed in 2011 in Yemen by a U.S. government drone strike ordered by President Barack Obama. Al-Awlaki became the first U.S. citizen to be targeted and killed by a drone strike from the U.S government.

President Barack Obama had absolute immunity for ordering the intentional killing of American citizen, Anwar al-Awlaqi. The issue of him being a presidential candidate is a non sequitur.

If Presidents did not have absolute immunity, or if the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals removes absolute immunity from President Trump, then Barack Obama can immediately be charged and arrested for killing al-Awlaqi. There is no statute of limitations for murder. Yes, this is the cold truth of the matter.

Additionally, 16-year-old American Citizen, Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, was killed in the same military assassination. Abdulrahman, a child, was standing next to his father; he was never accused of any wrongdoing; he was never charged with any unlawful conduct; he was an innocent bystander.

In 2011 when the Obama administration was questioned about killing the teenager, White House Spokesperson Robert Gibbs said, "I would suggest that you should have a far more responsible father if they are truly concerned about the well-being of their children. I don't think becoming an al-Qaeda jihadist terrorist is the best way to go about doing your business."

If the DC Appeals Court removes "absolute immunity" in order to prosecute President Donald J Trump, then the next administration can formally charge President Barack Obama with the specific and unlawful killing of an American citizen, with malice aforethought and specific intent to kill; ie homicide. Additional charges of manslaughter for the killing of the 16-year-old son are easily justified.

There is no statute of limitations for murder.

The eyes of a beer-drinking nation will be on a White House picnic table this evening.

WERTHEIMER: President Obama plans to sit down and share a cold one with a black professor and the white police sergeant who arrested the Harvard academic. The incident became a national discussion, and the president hopes to settle things down. Nothing is that simple, of course, not even the choice of beer.

NPR'S Scott Horsley reports.

SCOTT HORSLEY: The president wants to lower the temperature. And what better way to do that than by sharing a frosty beer with Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and the man who put Gates in handcuffs, Jim Crowley? But what beer? In a story already foaming with distinctions of race and class, would beer be the great equalizer or just another wedge?

Mr. Robert Gibbs (White House Spokesman): As I understand it, professor Gates said he liked Red Stripe, and I believe Sergeant Crowley mentioned to the president that he liked Blue Moon. So we'll have the gamut covered.

HORSLEY: White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says the president himself will drink Bud Lite. It's as if Mr. Obama, having gone out on a limb once already in this case, has now decided to play it safe. Industry consultant Tom Pirko of Bevmark notes Bud Lite is the most popular beer in America. Pirko suspects Mr. Obama is aiming for an all-American, Everyman appeal. Never mind that Anheuser-Busch, which makes Bud Lite, is now owned by Belgians and Brazilians. The professor and the policeman's beers are equally symbolic, Pirko says - Red Stripe with its Jamaican pedigree, and Blue Moon striving for craft beer credibility, though it's actually made by Coors. All three men at the table have their roles to play, Pirko says. They're drinking politics, not beer.

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will leave the campaign trail to go to Hawaii this week to visit the ailing grandmother who helped raise him, an aide said on Monday.

"Recently his grandmother has become ill and in the last few weeks her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious," said Obama aide Robert Gibbs.

Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who will be 86 on Sunday, helped raise him along with his mother, Ann Dunham, and his grandfather, Stanley Dunham.

Gibbs would not discuss the nature of her illness.

The candidate is canceling events in Madison, Wisconsin, and Des Moines, Iowa, that had been scheduled for Thursday. He instead will go to an event in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Thursday, then fly to Hawaii to see his grandmother.

He will return to the campaign trail on Saturday, Gibbs said.

Obama often makes references to his grandmother on the campaign trail, mentioning that she worked on a bomber assembly plant during World War Two. Later, she worked as a secretary in a bank and was eventually promoted to vice president. She helped put Obama through private school in Hawaii.

"Senator Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has always been one of the most important people in his life,"Gibbs said in a statement. "Along with his mother and his grandfather, she raised him in Hawaii from the time he was born until the moment he left for college. As he said at the Democratic Convention, she poured everything she had into him.

Obama's mother died of ovarian cancer when she was 52.

SEOUL (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Bill Clinton made a surprise visit to North Korea and met its reclusive leader on Tuesday to try to win freedom for two jailed American journalists in a move that could re-energize nuclear talks.

Clinton, husband of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, had what North Korea's KCNA news agency described as an "exhaustive conversation" over dinner with the ailing Kim Jong-il and top North Korean officials.

Arriving in an unmarked jet on a trip to North Korea he had hoped to take before leaving office in January 2001, Clinton was presented with flowers by a girl dressed in traditional costume before he was led to a black limousine and driven away.

Confusion rose quickly about the delicate diplomatic negotiations he was engaged in. The North Korean news agency said Clinton passed on a verbal message from U.S. President Barack Obama.

"Kim Jong-il expressed thanks for this," KCNA said of the message. "He welcomed Clinton's visit to the DPRK (North Korea) and had an exhaustive conversation with him. There was a wide-ranging exchange of views on the matters of common concern."

But the White House denied Clinton carried a message from Obama. "That's not true," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters in Washington.

Clinton's objective was to gain the release of two journalists, Euna Lee and Laura Ling of U.S. media outlet Current TV co-founded by Clinton's vice president Al Gore.

They were arrested on the North Korea-China border in March and accused of illegal entry. A North Korean court sentenced both of them last month to 12 years hard labor for what it called grave crimes.

Reporting from Washington and Cairo - Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday that U.S. officials intend to build contacts with Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, a sign of American concern that the conservative Islamic group is becoming one of the most important political forces in the post-Mubarak order.
Speaking to reporters in Budapest, Hungary, Clinton said that "given the changing political landscape in Egypt...it is in the interests of the United States to engage with all parties that are peaceful, and committed to nonviolence, that intend to compete for the parliament and the presidency."

The Obama administration has indicated since the uprising early this year that it sees a legitimate role for the group in Egyptian politics. On Jan. 31, then-White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that a reformed Egyptian government had to "include a whole host of important non-secular actors that give Egypt a strong chance to continue to be [a] stable and reliable partner."

Clinton said Thursday that the Obama administration was "continuing the approach of limited contacts with the Muslim Brotherhood that have existed on and off for about five or six years."

Even so, the group's conservative ideological views have been a concern to many Israelis and their supporters in the United States, and word of the administration's plans may cause further unease. The group supports Palestinian armed resistance against Israel.

(Apr. 29, 2011) - In July 2009, CNN President Jon Klein stated that the vital records belonging to Barack Hussein Obama could not be obtained because the Hawaii Department of Health had discarded original paper birth records in 2001.

Klein told some members of the staff of "Lou Dobbs Tonight" that no one should have a "legitimate beef" over Obama's failure to release his birth certificate because it was no longer available.

Other members of the media continued for more than two years to insist that the short-form image posted in 2008 was Obama's complete birth certificate. There were several different versions of the Certification of Live Birth, and the certificate number was originally blacked out.

However, the website for the Hawaii Department of Health mentions releasing "certified copies" of paper documents to eligible requesters, not electronic documents which would occur in a paperless environment.

If the Hawaii Department of Health had "gone paperless" in 2001, as claimed by CNN President Jon Klein, where did the image come from which was produced by the White House on Wednesday?

Where did the Certification of Live Birth come from which former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs claimed was Obama's "birth certificate?"

Julian Assange and his free-speech brainchild Wikileaks were once lauded as global heroes of public service among United States politicians and policy makers. But by 2010, four years after its inception during the President George W. Bush administration, Assange and his organization were no longer considered lovable troublemakers and mavericks.

A year into President Barack Obama's first term, Wikileaks was suddenly considered an out-of-control free-speech Frankenstein wreaking havoc on United States foreign policy and intelligence gathering at the direction of Assange, its proverbial Dr. Frankenstein.

The honeymoon for the whistle-blower web site, once a darling of the Democratic Party, was now over. Even more alarming, Assange's personal safety and organization were increasingly at risk from U.S. concerns.

By November 2010, Assange was a household name globally, but especially on Capitol Hill. And in the State Department alone his prowess of releasing otherwise secret, damning military documents and emails were filling conference rooms at Foggy Bottom and the White House with policy wonks and bureaucrats desperately seeking to squelch the upstart Wikileaks. At the State Department, meeting after meeting was conducted about how Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her inner circle were going to squash Assange and Wikileaks latest planned document dump on the United States. Deemed "CableGate," Assange planned to release confidential cables, or communications, unveiling damaging internal conversations between State Department personnel and its foreign assets and allies.

Prodded by the looming CableGate, Clinton met with staff on Tuesday November 23, 2010 shortly after 8 a.m. on Mahogany Row at the State Department to attempt to formulate a strategy to avert Assange's plans to release an enormous batch of 250,000 secret cables, dating from 1966 to 2010. Assange had professed for months to rain the internal cables down on Clinton and President Obama. The collective fear was the context of the secret cables would hamper U.S. intelligence gathering and compromise private correspondences and intelligence shared with foreign governments and opposition leaders. Splashing such juicy details on television news shows and the front pages of major newspapers in the country was great for the media but lousy for intelligence and foreign policy. Many, including Clinton and her elected boss, expressed fear these revelations would embarrass and expose intelligence allies of the United States and set America's already fragile foreign policy back decades.

"By its very nature, field reporting to Washington is candid and often incomplete information," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said in a statement responding to Wikileaks' anticipated tidal wave release of intelligence. "It is not an expression of policy, nor does it always shape final policy decisions."
Clinton's State Department was getting pressure from President Obama and his White House inner circle, as well as heads of state internationally, to try and cutoff Assange's delivery of the cables and if that effort failed, then to forge a strategy to minimize the administration's public embarrassment over the contents of the cables. Hence, Clinton's early morning November meeting of State's top brass who floated various proposals to stop, slow or spin the Wikileaks contamination. That is when a frustrated Clinton, sources said, at some point blurted out a controversial query.

"Can't we just drone this guy?" Clinton openly inquired, offering a simple remedy to silence Assange and smother Wikileaks via a planned military drone strike, according to State Department sources.

July 30, 2009- – On a hot summer night, President Obama sat down for cold beers in the Rose Garden of the White House with the two men at the center of a recent uproar over racial profiling.
Obama and Vice President Joe Biden shared a drink and some snacks with Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley and Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.
Two weeks ago, Crowley arrested Gates after a confrontation at Gates' home. The resulting war of words escalated July 22 when Obama said the police acted "stupidly."
Obama hoped that tonight's meeting would dial back the controversy and create what he called a "teachable moment."
The media was kept about 30 feet away from the table where the four men sat with their beers in frosty mugs and snacked on pretzels and peanuts.
After the meeting, the White House released a statement from the president, who thanked Gates and Crowley for coming to the White House for "a friendly, thoughtful conversation."
Obama said he learned before the sit-down over beers that Gates and Crowley already had their own private conservation, which he called "a testament to them."
"I have always believed that what brings us together is stronger than what pulls us apart," Obama said. "I am confident that has happened here tonight, and I am hopeful that all of us are able to draw this positive lesson from this episode."
Crowley told reporters there were no apologies offered at the meeting, but that he and Gates already have planned a follow up meeting to continue the conversation.
"I think what you had today was two gentlemen [who] agree to disagree on a particular issue," Crowley said. "I don't think we spent too much time dwelling on the past. We spent a lot of time discussing the future."
Crowley did not offer any specifics on what was said at the table in the Rose Garden.
"It was a private discussion, it was a frank discussion," he said.
Gates said in a statement on theroot.com that after tonight's meeting, "There's reason to hope that many people have emerged with greater sympathy for the daily perils of policing, on the one hand, and for the genuine fears about racial profiling, on the other hand.
"The national conversation over the past week about my arrest has been rowdy, not to say tumultuous and unruly. But we've learned that we can have our differences without demonizing one another," Gates said.
Tonight's beer choices? Obama had Bud Lite, Biden had non-alcoholic Buckler, Gates went for Samuel Adams Lite and Crowley chose Blue Moon.
Before sitting down in the Rose Garden, Obama met with Gates and Crowley in the Oval Office.
Earlier today, President Obama washed down any ideas that that he was hosting a "beer summit".
It's just about "three folks having a drink at the end of the day and hopefully giving people an opportunity to listen to each other," the president told reporters this afternoon.
"This is not a university seminar; it is not a summit," Obama said of the get-together, as he sat next to Philippines' President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. "It's an attempt to have some personal interaction when an issue has become so hyped and so symbolic that you lose sight of just the fact that these are people involved, including myself, all of whom are imperfect."
The president added that "hopefully instead of ginning up anger and hyperbole, you know, everybody can just spend a little bit of time with some self-reflection and recognizing that everybody has different points of view."
The White House billed the event as just a couple of guys sitting down for a beer.
"There is no formal agenda, there is no legislative agenda," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said, adding that the sit-down is "not an after-action report," and he did not expect they will go over the details of what happened at Gates' house.
"To get together and talk about what's going on in this country is a positive thing, even if you're not able to hear each and every word of it," Gibbs told reporters. "I think that kind of dialogue is what has to happen at every level of … our society if we're going to make progress on issues that … we've been dealing with for quite some time."
Gibbs, instead, called it an opportunity to foster a dialogue. When told that Gates wants an apology, Gibbs said, "We're not here to mediate apologies."
Gates' and Crowley's families arrived separately at the White House at different times but met up as both groups were taking tours of the president's residence before the beer meeting. The Gateses and Crowleys continued their tours together, which Crowley called "a start."

President Donald Trump has repeatedly hurled insults at the FBI agents working on special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the 2016 campaign. Rudy Giuliani, a former U.S. attorney who's now Trump's lawyer, has attacked them as "stormtroopers."

The vitriol is unsurprising. The agents are powering an investigation that has shadowed Trump's entire presidency - and they are mostly unknown to the public, making them easy targets. They are a mix of bureau veterans and relative newcomers handpicked by Mueller and his prosecutors to handle the highest-profile and most sensitive federal investigation in a generation.


To assemble this portrait of Mueller's FBI team, POLITICO scoured court records, news accounts and press releases and conducted more than two dozen interviews with defense lawyers and witnesses as well as with current and former FBI agents.

The agents who form the core of Mueller's investigative team - who work mostly from a southwest Washington office complex whose only distinguishing feature may be the network TV camera regularly posted near the entrance - have a wide range of skills, with some specializing in financial frauds, others in counterintelligence or corruption, and still others adept at investigating computer hacking and other forms of cybercrime.

Mueller's FBI crew appears to be a combination of agents who were already working aspects of the investigation before the former FBI director took over a year ago, either because of their expertise or their location, and a set of volunteers who jumped aboard or were invited to join as the special counsel staffed up.

"The agents come two ways," said Jeff Cramer, a former federal prosecutor in Chicago, now with Berkeley Research Group. "One is geographic. But, as you're constructing your perfect investigative team, if you have your druthers and there's agents you've worked with in the past, wherever they are in the country, on a case like this you do reach out and say, 'Would you like to be involved in this?'"

Those who said yes include Omer Meisel, a former Securities and Exchange Commission investigator who cut his teeth as a young FBI recruit probing the collapse of Enron with Mueller deputy Andrew Weissmann nearly two decades ago.

"He's one of Andrew's favorite agents," said a lawyer who's worked with both men. Another attorney described Meisel as "one of the smartest, most street savvy, hardworking FBI agents I ever encountered."

Other agents working on the Trump-Russia probe include Robert Gibbs, who's worked Chinese espionage cases; Sherine Ebadi, who pursued a multimillion-dollar fraud at the U.S.' biggest corporate jet maker; Jennifer Edwards, an accountant who handled internet crimes against children before joining the special counsel's team; Jason Alberts, a public-corruption specialist who has handled high-profile cases involving the New York Police Department and the United Nations; and Brock Domin, a novice FBI agent with technology know-how, Russian language skills and experience on the ground in Moscow.

Alberts has undergraduate and law degrees from Arizona State University and teaches criminal procedure in an online class for ASU's law school. He also organized the New York spinoff of charity run named for Pat Tillman, football player who quit to become an Army Ranger and was killed in Afghanistan.

Filed the court affidavit supporting former Trump adviser George Papadopoulos' 2017 arrest at Washington's Dulles Airport as he came off a plane from Germany. In court filings, Gibbs said he's has been with the FBI since 2003 and has "conducted numerous investigations into complex domestic and extraterritorial crimes, including crimes related to espionage and foreign influence." In 2009, he led a case against a Pentagon official, Wilbur Fondren, who was accused of selling classified and unclassified information to Tai Shen Kuo, a Taiwan-born U.S. citizen who admitted working for China. Early parts of that case were prosecuted by Aaron Zebley, now one of Mueller's top deputies on the special counsel probe.

Geithner's Tax Troubles Are Serious

Timothy Geithner has just run into a potentially serious obstacle on the road to his confirmation as Barack Obama's Treasury secretary.

Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee made public concerns about Geithner's tax obligations, which resulted in his recent payment of $42,702 in additional taxes and interest for tax years 2001 to 2004. In addition, the committee's report on the matter says that in 2005 Geithner employed a housekeeper for about three and a half months after her ability to work in the U.S. had lapsed.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., described Geithner's errors as "serious," but he said they were "honest mistakes" that "do not rise to the level of disqualification." Baucus also said Geithner corrected the problems as soon as he learned of them. The Montana Democrat wants to have a confirmation hearing on Friday because he says it's important to have a Treasury secretary on "day one." Obama's inauguration takes place Jan. 20.

But Geithner's tax troubles are more worrisome for his confirmation than Baucus lets on–and not just because the Internal Revenue Service is part of the Treasury Department.

According to the Senate committee's report, Geithner "recently filed amended tax returns" for each tax year from 2001 through 2006. However, the report doesn't specify when these returns were filed, leaving open the question about how long Geithner knew about the improprieties before he fixed them.

On Dec. 5, Obama's transition team told Finance Committee staff that Geithner hadn't paid social security or self-employment taxes on income received from the International Monetary Fund from 2001 to 2004, the report says. Three years ago, the IRS audited Geithner for tax years 2003 and 2004, which resulted in him paying back taxes and interest–but no penalties–totaling $16,732.

However, Geithner voluntarily amended his 2001 and 2002 returns only after Obama expressed interest in nominating him to the Treasury post. The total bill this time: $25,970.

Income taxes for U.S. citizens who work for the IMF can be tricky. The IMF doesn't withhold an employee's share of social security taxes, and all of the organization's employees are responsible for meeting their own tax obligations. The IMF gives its employees–Geithner included–direction on how to pay self-employment taxes. And Geithner, a former Treasury official who is now president of the New York Fed, has dealt with complicated tax issues before, the report notes.

Was Geithner previously aware of irregularities on his 2001 and 2002? Did he only correct them when it became evident that a congressional committee would likely scrub his tax records in anticipation of confirmation hearings? The report doesn't say. Officials from Obama's transition team were not immediately available to comment.

But there's another concern, related to three people who have worked for him as household help since 2004. "He did not obtain the required Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, from these persons at the time they were hired to verify their legal work status," the Finance Committee's report says.

Nonetheless, Geithner was apparently aware of their legal status–someone entered into an address book owned by the Geithners, the report says. The Geithners apparently made a record that one employee's legal work status expired in July 2005, though she "did not renew her legal work status and the Geithners did not follow up with the employee to confirm whether she had done so." The person remained on the family's payroll until October 2005.

For now at least, Obama is standing by Geithner, one of his most vaunted Cabinet nominees.

"The president-elect chose Tim Geithner to be his Treasury secretary because he's the right person to help lead our economic recovery during these challenging times," incoming White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said in a statement. "He made a common mistake on his taxes and was unaware that his part-time housekeeper's work authorization expired for the last three months of her employment."

And Senate Democrats–including Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sen. Charles Schumer of New York–are already starting to rally behind the nominee, who has been a major player in the government's response to the economic crisis.

The Qatari government, a prominent donor to the Clinton Foundation and a suspected enabler of terrorist groups, recently arrested and briefly imprisoned a group of BBC journalists reporting on worker exploitation in the oil-rich nation.

The Qataris had invited BBC correspondent Mark Lobel and his colleagues to tour new housing facilities for low-paid migrant workers who have flocked to the country seeking construction jobs as Qatar prepares to host the World Cup in 2022. Working conditions and worker accommodations in Qatar have been widely criticized by human rights groups such as Amnesty International, which says migrant workers are often "treated like cattle." Hundreds of World Cup workers are estimated to have died on the job.

Days before their government-sponsored publicity tour was scheduled to begin, however, the BBC was stopped while driving on the highway, taken to a detention facility, and interrogated by "hostile" security officials. Lobel was shown pictures of himself and his crew, indicating that Qatari agents had been trailing them from the moment they arrived. Their crime, apparently, was trying to visit the migrant worker camps without government approval. In a statement, the Qataris accused the journalists of trespassing on "private property."

Lobel and his BBC colleagues were ultimately released after two nights in a "filthy prison" and were allowed to take part in the government-approved tour, which was administered by the London-based public relations firm Portland Communications. The Qatari government has ramped up its lobbying efforts in recent years to help combat unwanted criticism. Among the firms they have hired is Levick Public Relations, which employs Lanny Davis, former special counsel to President Bill Clinton and ardent defender of Hillary Clinton.

The Clinton Foundation has enjoyed close ties to Qatar government for years. The country has donated between $1 million and $5 million to the Clinton Foundation, and was the only foreign government donor to have also lobbied the State Department during Hillary Clinton's tenure as secretary of state. The country's official World Cup 2022 committee has donated between $250,001 and $500,000, at least a portion of which was donated in 2014. Amwal, one of Qatar's most prominent investment firms, has also contributed to the foundation.

Bill Clinton praised the Qataris as "intelligent, forward-looking" investment partners after the Clinton Foundation teamed up with the Qatari government to invest millions in Haiti following the devastating earthquake in 2010. Chelsea Clinton's chief of staff at the Clinton Foundation used to manage the now defunct partnership between the Tribeca Film Festival and the Qatari film industry.

Former Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs has described the Clinton Foundation's ties to the Qatari government (and other questionable Middle Eastern regimes) as "awkward at best."

Holder Hires Prosecutor to Look Into Alleged CIA Interrogation Abuses

In appointing a prosecutor to investigate alleged CIA interrogation abuses, including episodes that resulted in prisoner deaths, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on Monday shook off warnings from President Obama to avoid becoming mired in past controversies.

Holder said that he realizes the move is controversial but that it was the only responsible course to take.

The decision does not reflect a sharp division between the Justice Department and the White House, government officials said, given the limits of the preliminary review and the respect that Obama says he maintains for the role of an independent attorney general. But it could mark the beginning of a painstaking inquiry that tests the boundaries of the Justice Department's discretion and its ability to evaluate incomplete evidence collected on the world's battlegrounds.

Holder has named longtime prosecutor John H. Durham, who has parachuted into crisis situations for both political parties over three decades, to open an early review of nearly a dozen cases of alleged detainee mistreatment at the hands of CIA interrogators and contractors.

The announcement raised fresh tensions in an intelligence community fearful that it will bear the brunt of the punishment for Bush-era national security policy, and it immediately provoked criticism from congressional Republicans.

Legal analysts said the review, while preliminary, could expand beyond its relatively narrow mandate and ensnare a wider cast of characters. They cited U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald's investigation of the leak of a CIA operative's identity, which culminated with the criminal conviction of then-Vice President Richard B. Cheney's chief of staff.

In a statement Monday afternoon, Holder cautioned that the inquiry is far from a full-blown criminal investigation. Rather, he said, it is unknown whether indictments or prosecutions of CIA contractors and employees will follow. Lawyers involved in similar reviews said that any possible cases could take years to build because of challenges with witnesses and evidence.

"I fully realize that my decision to commence this preliminary review will be controversial," Holder added. "As attorney general, my duty is to examine the facts and to follow the law. In this case, given all of the information currently available, it is clear to me that this review is the only responsible course of action for me to take."

Obama and White House officials have said that they want to look ahead on national security; White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said last week that the administration is eager to keep "going forward" and that "a hefty litigation looking backward is not what we believe is in the country's best interest."

But the White House voiced support for Holder in a news conference held Monday on Martha's Vineyard, Mass., where deputy press secretary Bill Burton told reporters that "ultimately, the decisions on who is investigated and who is prosecuted are up to the attorney general. . . . The president thinks that Eric Holder, who he appointed as a very independent attorney general, should make those decisions."

But nearly as important in the high-stakes analysis will be Durham, 59, an assistant U.S. attorney in Connecticut who has investigated Boston mob kingpins, corrupt FBI agents and his state's GOP governor. Durham rarely speaks publicly, but in private he cracks jokes, follows the Boston Red Sox and regularly attends Mass with his wife of several decades. One of his four sons followed in his father's footsteps and now serves as a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn.

Though a registered Republican, Durham generally is regarded as apolitical, and attorneys general from both parties – including Janet Reno, Michael B. Mukasey and Holder – have tapped him for their most difficult assignments.

U.S. Busts APEC Summit With Tariff Demands - New York Times Blames China

A New York Times report about last weekend's summit in Asia demonstrates how U.S. media misinform their readers about international events.

The recent summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Papua New Guinea failed to come up with a joint statement. Prime Minister Peter O'Neill of Papua New Guinea, who hosted the summit, promised to issue a "chair's statement" instead. None can be found so far on the APEC website. This was the first time since 1989 that no joined 'Leaders' Declaration' was issued.

The reason was a spat between the U.S. and China about a clause the U.S. tried to insert into the joint declaration.

But as the Times tells the story, the failure of the summit was solely China's fault:

At a major international gathering in Papua New Guinea over the weekend, the United States wanted to end with a group statement emphasizing free trade. China objected.

But instead of working out the disagreement through dialogue, Chinese officials barged uninvited into the office of the host country's foreign minister demanding changes in the official communiqué.

"China doesn't care if it looks like a boor. If you are a tough guy, you don't care what others think," said Hugh White, a former military strategist for the Australian government and author of "The China Choice."

Such behavior was only surprising because it had been more than 30 years since the world had witnessed such edginess, Mr. White said.

The Chinese deny that the APEC incident happened at all. Mr. White seems to have missed the 2009 Copenhagen climate talks during which the U.S. president and his secretary of state boorishly busted a meeting, held by China, Brazil, India and others, they were not invited to join:

Once they found the makeshift conference room where the meeting was being held, Obama, Clinton, and their aides approached a "commotion" as she describes it - foreign aides and security guards outside the door. According to Clinton, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs confronted a Chinese guard. "In the commotion the president slipped through the door and yelled, 'Mr Premier!' really loudly, which got everyone's attention. The Chinese guards put their arms up against the door again, but I ducked under and made it through," Clinton wrote.

It is now the ultimate status symbol in a town obsessed by status. Obama was spotted last week trying out his new BlackBerry — or actually a more sophisticated,encrypted variation — and aides say that he uses a computer in the study next to the Oval Office but that he has agreed to limit the number of people he would exchange e-mail with. In the process,he created a new measure for Washington to judge who really has the ear,or the thumb,of the president.

For decades,the capital scoured state dinner invitation lists and Camp David visitor logs for clues to who was in and who was out.

Former President Bill Clinton established a new class of insider with his Lincoln Bedroom sleepovers,although those usually came with an implicit price tag as he tried to raise campaign money. Former President George W Bush provided fewer opportunities for the elite to demonstrate their eliteness by virtually abandoning state dinners,but there were invitations to his Texas ranch.

Now there is President Obama’s e-mail,the first used by a commander in chief while in office. “This is the 21st-century version of the same special access that certain people are always granted to the president,” said Joel P Johnson,a senior White House adviser under Clinton.

Those select few who have Obama’s e-mail address include Rahm Emanuel,the White House chief of staff; David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett,both senior advisers; and Robert Gibbs,the press secretary. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is a frequent BlackBerry user,but a spokesman said he did not know whether she had the president’s address.

Obama joked about the exclusive nature of his e-mail list at the annual Alfalfa Club dinner in Washington on Saturday night. “How exclusive?” the president asked. “Everyone look at the person sitting on your left. Now look at the person sitting on your right. None of you have my e-mail address.”

The exclusivity is not just a matter of safeguarding the president’s scarce time or even protecting him from spam. Security personnel worry that the more available his address,the more vulnerable it may be to hacking pranksters or,worse,to cyber-attackers from,say,Russia or China.

Obama’s e-mail pals are largely keeping mum. Few openly acknowledged having the address.

The challenge for those privileged few with the address will be when to use it. What is the etiquette on sending e-mail to the president? Several friends and aides said they would hit the “reply” button but not the “new message” button — in other words,send messages only when messaged first.

“Rarely will I bother him for anything serious or nonserious,” said Alexi Giannoulias,the state treasurer of Illinois and a friend. “I figure if he needs me or wants to talk to me on any social level,he can get me very,very quickly. In Washington, D.C., nothing will be harder to win a spot on than the list of e-mail addresses allowed to arrive, unimpeded, to President Obama's BlackBerry.

Presidential Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said yesterday that only "a limited group of senior staffers and some personal friends" will be allowed to send email to what might soon be known as BlackBerry One.

"It's a pretty small group of people," Gibbs deadpanned.

No kidding.

Obama's wife is a sure bet to be on the list, and maybe his kids. Vice President Biden will probably be able to get through, along with Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, adviser David Axelrod, aide Reggie Love and Gibbs.

There are the friends: Marty Nesbitt, Valerie Jarrett and Eric Whitaker from Chicago. Some Cabinet secretaries might make it; some might not. Bill Clinton might need to use his wife's account if he wants to send a message.

Gibbs would not say who, or even how many people, will be on the list. But it's a good bet that it will be easier to get invited to the Academy Awards after-party at Steven Spielberg's house, or to the VIP reception at the World Econmic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

True, very few people are allowed to sit in on the Supreme Court's weekly deliberations. And a dinner invitation to Pamela Harriman's house was pretty hard to get in her heyday. But aside from that, there's almost nothing in Washington that is more exclusive.

The president has to overcome the objections of security officials to keep his beloved handheld device, and Gibbs declined to elaborate on the specific restrictions that will be placed on the president's BlackBerry, except to say that "use will be limited and that the security is enhanced to ensure his ability to communicate, but to do so effectively and to do so in a way that is protected."

In geekspeak, what that means is that it's likely that White House IT experts will use a server-based "whitelist" for incoming messages. Only people explicitly placed on the list will be able to send messages. The rest will simply bounce back.

Gibbs also suggested that Obama's outgoing e-mail would be limited. Mail servers can be tweaked to make sure that only certain outgoing messages find their destinations.

What kind of messages will Obama be getting from this exclusive group? Gibbs said it's likely to be a mix of personal and professional.

"I've gotten e-mails from him – not recently, or not in a few days, I should say – that go from anywhere from something that's very strictly business to, 'why did my football team perform so miserably?" on either any given Saturday or any given Sunday."

So when his e-mail is released under Freedom of Information rules years from now, there's likely to be a lot of official-sounding back-and-forth. But also look for a message like "Nice tie, dude" to pop into his e-mail box after his first State of the Union address.
