Peer review: a flawed process at the heart of science and journals
Richard Smith 1
PMCID: PMC1420798 PMID: 16574968
Peer review is at the heart of the processes of not just medical journals but of all of science. It is the method by which grants are allocated, papers published, academics promoted, and Nobel prizes won. Yet it is hard to define. It has until recently been unstudied. And its defects are easier to identify than its attributes. Yet it shows no sign of going away. Famously, it is compared with democracy: a system full of problems but the least worst we have.
When something is peer reviewed it is in some sense blessed. Even journalists recognize this. When the BMJ published a highly controversial paper that argued that a new `disease', female sexual dysfunction, was in some ways being created by pharmaceutical companies, a friend who is a journalist was very excited-not least because reporting it gave him a chance to get sex onto the front page of a highly respectable but somewhat priggish newspaper (the Financial Times). `But,' the news editor wanted to know, `was this paper peer reviewed?'. The implication was that if it had been it was good enough for the front page and if it had not been it was not. Well, had it been? ….

An increase in article retractions, the proliferation of paper mills and predatory journals: scientific literature is undergoing a crisis that threatens confidence in its integrity. Cyril Labb?, a computer science researcher at Universit? Grenoble-Alpes, untangles the causes that have led to such abuses. He is one of France's leading specialists in automatic fraud detection and, since 2020, has been coordinating the multidisciplinary NanoBubbles project1, which analyses why, when and how science struggles to correct itself….

Laser ultrasound used to reveal the elasticity of space rock for the first time
May 16, 2025
Scientists and engineers at the University of Nottingham have measured the stiffness of space rock for the first time.
Many meteorites are made of crystalline materials, formed under exotic conditions that cannot be replicated on Earth.
The stiffness of the crystals that make up these materials has historically been difficult to measure and normally this requires scientists to grow a special single crystal, which in this case is not possible.
Published in Scripta Materialia, using a new technique developed and patented at the University of Nottingham, experts have measured this important property for the first time.
Lead author of the study, Wenqi Li, from the university's Optics and Photonics research group, said, "These materials have evolved in unique conditions over millions of years to form these amazing structures and patterns.
"These conditions cannot be reproduced on Earth and meteorites have amazing large-scale microstructure and phase mixtures which give mechanical and elastic properties that are quite different to the man-made iron-nickel alloys we can produce on Earth."
Meteorites provide access to information on the formation and evolution of planetary bodies which is otherwise difficult to study. The unique nature of these samples and their relative scarcity means that non-destructive analysis techniques are needed to study their properties. Understanding their properties develops the understanding of the formation of the solar system and the planets.
Studying these samples can also help develop an understanding of alloys used for aerospace and industrial applications, suitable for constructing extraterrestrial structures, making meteors a suitable source of material for future manufacturing in space.
This study uses the laser ultrasound technique spatially resolved acoustic spectroscopy (SRAS++), which was invented at the University of Nottingham, to measure the properties of the Gibeon meteorite.
Associate Professor Richard Smith explained, "The SRAS++ machine uses lasers to make and detect acoustic waves that travel on the surface of the material.
This means that we do not need to touch the sample and do not damage the sample in any way. This is really important for samples where there is limited supply.
"There are no published values to directly compare the results of this study, as non-destructive measurements of the single crystal elasticity on granular material has not previously been possible.
"So, we compared our results with theoretical values for man-made iron-nickel alloys. We also calculated the bulk properties from our single crystal elasticity measurements and compared them to published measurements on the Gibeon meteorite and they also agree well."
Professor Matt Clark, Faculty of Engineering, says, "We're incredibly excited to gain access to larger pieces of these precious samples in the future so we can use the SRAS++ method to image the changes in the local elastic properties from the center to the periphery of the meteorites to understand the formation of these complicated materials."

Anderson Couple Sentenced to Combined 75 Years in Federal Prison for Sexually Exploiting Infant
Jamie M. Powell, a/k/a Jamie Cramer, 44, and Richard Smith, 42, both of Anderson, Indiana, have been sentenced for their roles in a conspiracy to sexually exploit a minor.
Powell has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit the sexual exploitation of a minor as well as actual and attempted sexual exploitation of a minor. Powell must also pay $10,000 in restitution.
Richard Smith has been sentenced to 50 years in federal prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit the sexual exploitation of a minor and possession of child sexual abuse material. Smith must also pay $10,000 in restitution. His federal sentence was ordered to be served consecutively to his state convictions for Dealing in Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Battery with Bodily Injury to a Public Safety Officer, for which he received concurrent sentences of 16-, 5-, and 4-years imprisonment.
According to court documents, Powell is the mother of five children, including Minor Victim 1, who was between one and two years old at the time of the offense. In early 2020, the Department of Child Services (DCS) filed to terminate Powell's parental rights. Powell relocated to an apartment in Anderson, with three of her children and her boyfriend, Richard Smith. Powell's youngest children, Minor Victim 1 and Minor Witness 1 were in DCS Custody.
Between late 2020 and early 2021, Powell and Smith discussed Smith's sexual interest in Powell's children and in bestiality over text messages. In those messages, the couple agreed for Powell to molest Minor Victim 1 and produce sexually explicit photos and videos of the child to send to Smith. The messages also contained extremely graphic and crude requests from Smith detailing how he wanted Powell to abuse the minor.
Throughout this time period, Powell was permitted to have supervised visitation with two of her children, including Minor Victim 1. During these court-ordered visitations, Powell waited until supervisors were not looking to record sexually explicit videos and images of the child, attempting to evade suspicion by pretending to change her diaper. In total, over 25 visits, Powell produced 577 images and videos of child sexual abuse of Minor Victim 1 and shared 486 of them with Smith.
Investigators located over 2,400 image files of child sex abuse material and approximately 170 video files of bestiality on Powell's cell phone. On Smith's cell phone, investigators found more than 5,000 images and videos of child sex abuse material.

?The silencing of scientific curiosity
Medical journals have became enforcers of orthodoxy-retracting genuine hypotheses while protecting proven fraud.
Why is a 'hypothesis' a threat to science?

As a scientific writer and researcher, I've witnessed the decline of medical journals firsthand. I interviews Rita Redberg, ex-EIC of @JAMAInternalMed, Richard Smith ex EIC of @bmj_latest and John Ioannidis, the most cited scientist in the world https://blog.maryannedemasi.com/p/are-medical-journals-dead?utm_source=publication-search
—
Never have I seen a more absurd example of this decay than the retraction of a hypothesis paper-yes, a hypothesis-authored by @SabinehazanMD in Frontiers in Microbiology.
In May 2023-more than a year after the article was peer-reviewed and published-the journal retracted the paper following a series of complaints on PubPeer, offering only a vague explanation about "scientific soundness."
—
Retraction is historically reserved for cases of fraud or clear misconduct.
But in the case of @SabinehazanMD, the journal simply erased the paper on her "hypothesis" offering no transparent justification, no engagement with the scientific process, and no accountability.
It violated the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines. https://publicationethics.org/guidance/guideline/retraction-guidelines
—
Why was @SabinehazanMD attacked for proposing a hypothesis?
Is there professional jealousy in the microbiome space? Are pharmaceutical companies, threatened by low-cost alternatives like ivermectin, pressuring journals to kill competing narratives?
If so, the Securities and Exchange Commission (@SECGov) should investigate. Suppressing research that could affect investor decisions-by inflating the perceived value of antivirals or vaccines-could amount to securities fraud.
—
Journals may quickly cave to pressure. In July 2024, @BharatBiotech sued 11 authors-six of them students-and the editor of Drug Safety, Nitin Joshi, over a peer-reviewed article questioning the safety of their Covaxin vaccine.
The journal, under legal duress, retracted the paper. The authors were left to fend for themselves. https://blog.maryannedemasi.com/p/breaking-journal-pressured-to-retract?utm_source=publication-search

FedEx combines air, ground, other operations to slash costs
NEW YORK (AP) - FedEx will combine almost all of its ground, air and other operations by next year as part of a $4 billion cost cutting plan.
The package delivery company said Wednesday that FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Services and other FedEx operating companies will be rolled into a single entity by June 2024 in a companywide reorganization. FedEx Freight, the company's freight transportation services division, will continue as a stand-alone company within Federal Express Corp.
Raj Subramaniam will serve as president and CEO of the combined organization. John Smith will become president and CEO of U.S. and Canada ground operations at FedEx Express and assume leadership of surface operations across the FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, and FedEx Freight businesses. Richard Smith will serve as president and CEO, airline and international at FedEx Express, overseeing all other regions and FedEx Logistics.
The company expects to realize permanent cost reductions of $4 billion from the reshuffle at some point during fiscal 2025.

British businessman arrested after uranium found at Heathrow airport
"I want to be clear that despite making this arrest, and based on what we currently know, this incident still does not appear to be linked to any direct threat to the public," Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Commander Richard Smith said.
A British businessman has been arrested after a small amount of radioactive uranium was found as he was traveling through Heathrow Airport.
The British citizen, who is in his 60s, was detained by counterterrorism police following the discovery of traces of uranium at Heathrow on Dec. 29 in a consignment of scrap metal intended for an Iranian registered business based in the United Kingdom, The Telegraph reported.
The man was questioned under section nine of the Terrorism Act 2006, which created an offense "of making or possessing a radioactive device or possessing radioactive material with the intention of using it" in the commission or preparation of an act of terrorism. The section of that law is rarely used.
The police announced on Sunday that they had found no evidence of a plot and that they believed the incident wasn't linked to any direct threat to the public.
The businessman was arrested Saturday morning and released on bail Sunday until April after being questioned by police.
The head of the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command, Commander Richard Smith, said in a statement on Sunday, "The discovery of what was a very small amount of uranium within a package at Heathrow Airport is clearly of concern, but it shows the effectiveness of the procedures and checks in place with our partners to detect this type of material.
"Our priority since launching our investigation has been to ensure that there is no linked direct threat to the public," Smith continued. "To this end, we are following every possible line of enquiry available to us, which has led us to making this arrest over the weekend."
"I want to be clear that despite making this arrest, and based on what we currently know, this incident still does not appear to be linked to any direct threat to the public," he added. "However, detectives are continuing with their enquiries to ensure this is definitely the case."
Border Force officials at Heathrow called in police after discovering cargo contaminated with a "very small amount of uranium" during a routine screening using sophisticated radioactive scanning equipment.
While the identity of the businessman is unclear, it has been reported he's involved with a company that imports scrap metal.
The uranium was contained within metal bars which came from Pakistan and were placed in the hold of an Oman Air passenger jet at Muscat Airport en route to London, according to the reports.
Citing senior sources, The Telegraph reported that it was most likely that uranium contamination of the metal bars was accidental, rather than part of a terrorist plot.
The arrest comes after the execution of dual British-Iranian citizen and former Iranian deputy defense minister Alireza Akbari was executed in Iran for allegedly spying for MI6. British intelligence services have also accused the Iranian regime of backing at least 10 plots to murder or kidnap opponents on UK streets in the last year.

Q Research General #22086: TRUTH belongs with the PEOPLE Edition

Research fraud is often viewed as a problem of "bad apples," but Barbara K Redman, who spoke at the webinar insists that it is not a problem of bad apples but bad barrels if not, she said, of rotten forests or orchards. In her book Research Misconduct Policy in Biomedicine: Beyond the Bad-Apple Approach she argues that research misconduct is a systems problem-the system provides incentives to publish fraudulent research and does not have adequate regulatory processes. Researchers progress by publishing research, and because the publication system is built on trust and peer review is not designed to detect fraud it is easy to publish fraudulent research. The business model of journals and publishers depends on publishing, preferably lots of studies as cheaply as possible. They have little incentive to check for fraud and a positive disincentive to experience reputational damage-and possibly legal risk-from retracting studies. Funders, universities, and other research institutions similarly have incentives to fund and publish studies and disincentives to make a fuss about fraudulent research they may have funded or had undertaken in their institution-perhaps by one of their star researchers. Regulators often lack the legal standing and the resources to respond to what is clearly extensive fraud, recognising that proving a study to be fraudulent (as opposed to suspecting it of being fraudulent) is a skilled, complex, and time consuming process. Another problem is that research is increasingly international with participants from many institutions in many countries: who then takes on the unenviable task of investigating fraud? Science really needs global governance.
Everybody gains from the publication game, concluded Roberts, apart from the patients who suffer from being given treatments based on fraudulent data.
Stephen Lock, my predecessor as editor of The BMJ, became worried about research fraud in the 1980s, but people thought his concerns eccentric. Research authorities insisted that fraud was rare, didn't matter because science was self-correcting, and that no patients had suffered because of scientific fraud. All those reasons for not taking research fraud seriously have proved to be false, and, 40 years on from Lock's concerns, we are realising that the problem is huge, the system encourages fraud, and we have no adequate way to respond. It may be time to move from assuming that research has been honestly conducted and reported to assuming it to be untrustworthy until there is some evidence to the contrary.
Richard Smith was the editor of The BMJ until 2004.
Competing interest: RS was a cofounder of the Committee on Medical Ethics (COPE), for many years the chair of the Cochrane Library Oversight Committee, and a member of the board of the UK Research Integrity Office.

THE EUGENE WAVELENGTH
"A powerful radio signal that may be affecting human health has been monitored in several Eugene locations and in the air three thousand feet above the city," proclaimed the Eugene Register-Guard on March 26, 1978. "The source of the radio signal is unknown." Thus came to light news of the. first electromagnetic biohazards suffered by a major population center (34). Shortly before the Register-Guard printed the story, a middle-aged Eugene man, Walter Deposkey, came down with symptoms remarkably similar to those attributed to microwave sickness (35). He noted a strange vibration emanating from within his home. He heard voices. He could not sleep. He suffered burning of his cornea. University of Oregon industrial hygeinist Marshall van Ert, called to investigate Deposkey's complaints, suffered the same symptoms in the man's home. Disturbed, van Ert recruited several local engineers to investigate. The engineers measured an unusual radio signal they determined was capable of producing potential biohazards. After dogging public health agencies to investigate further, van Ert broke the story in the papers (36).
The Eugene Signal was described as a radio frequency pulse at 4.75 megahertz, 1,100 cycles per second, recorded within at least two local homes as well as 3,000 feet above the city (37). The signal's strength was rated at five hundred thousand watts – ten times the FCC AM licensed limit. The signal extended as far away as the next town, Corvallis. 150 documented complaints about the signal prompted Governor Bob Straub, Senator Mark Hatfield, and Congressman Jim Weaver to demand an EPA investigation (38). A data analysis by the State Health Department's Radiation Control Section suggested "probable cause" linking the complaints to the strange frequency (39). "I was surprised," said Clifford Shrock, a Textronix, Inc. radio frequency analyst who had written CIA and NSA electronics manuals, "I'd never seen anything like it before." (40) Reactions to the story" flooded in from around the world. Calls came in from people telling similar stories about their own distant areas. Several calls came from technicians offering their hypotheses about the signal, suggesting a possible link to secret weapons readiation. The people of Eugene began to learn about Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) biohazards in a hurry.
No one, however, could get to the bottom of Eugene's problem. The FCC's. Enforcement Division Assistant Chief, Richard Smith, laid the blame squarely on a naval transmitter at Dixon, California – the "Dixon Duck" (41). Van Ert and others disputed this conclusion. The Navy denied it. When the EPA technicians finally arrived, they decided no real Problem existed and denied that there was any mystery signal. Van Ert, Shrock, and others strongly disagreed with them. They had felt the signal and had measured it. But, after holding a cursory press conference, the EPA investigators returned to its Las Vegas headquarters and dodged reporters. Then the investigation folded.
While some of the citizens of Eugene, Oregon say they continue to suffer from the signal effects, the Eugene Signal remains an official mystery. Marshall Van Ert left Eugene after he began suffering from EMR symptoms. Today he is still convinced he was-victimized by secret IW radiation and a government coverup.

FedEx Readies A Plan To Help Distribute COVID-19 Vaccines
FedEx has readied a plan that will assist the government in the distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine to consumers. The world's largest shipping company has over 5,000 facilities, 80,000 vehicles, 670 aircraft, and half a million team members around the globe ready and some new technology in place to "help out."
Richard Smith, the President of the Americas Region for FedEx Express and Executive VP of Global Support said that the company has been ready since the H1N1 outbreak nearly a decade ago. At that time, FedEx worked closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to distribute the vaccine for the H1N1 outbreak. After H1N1 was made into such a big deal, the company redoubled efforts to invest more in cold-chain infrastructure and "unique monitoring and intervention capabilities," Smith explained.
FedEx intends to digitally track where these vaccines end up.
Announced in September, FedEx has begun using SenseAware ID, which uses Bluetooth Low Energy to transmit a location every few seconds. The devices will provide more precise location tracking, which will allow FedEx to intervene should something go awry during the shipment process. It will also give recipients a new level of information about their delivery.
Further, the SenseAware ID will be used with predictive analytics, which will give the shipping giant even more ability to move the potential vaccine quickly. -Fox Business
Already, companies such as Pfizer, are estimating1.3 billion doses could be delivered by 2021, according to the Wall Street Journal.
This vaccine will be available shortly thanks to Donald Trump's Operation Warp Speed, a plan to fast track a vaccine to make it available in record time to the public. Many have theorized that this vaccine is already ready and that the elitists and ruling class are waiting until the right time to force it on everyone.
Chief medical authoritarian, Dr. Anthony Fauci, says that things would have to get "really, really bad" for him to advocate for a national lockdown. But this is the same guy who told the public not to wear masks, then changed his mind later. At this point, if we have learned anything from this scamdemic, it's that politicians and the government cannot be trusted to look out for our best interests. We are on our own.

West Virginia Sentences Man to 775 Years for Recording Sex Abuse of Infant
A West Virginia man who was convicted of filming the sexual abuse of an infant was handed a hefty 775-year-sentence on Wednesday.
Richard Smith II, 41, was convicted in February on 11 counts of first-degree sexual abuse, four counts of sexual assault, and five counts of sexual abuse by someone responsible for a child, Fox 13 reported.
Kanawha Circuit Judge Tera Salango did not hold back when she passed sentence. Salango handed Smith between 205 and 775 years behind bars.
"I think that you are one of the most evil persons who I've ever encountered," the judge said in court.
The charges added up quickly. Each of the first-degree sexual assault charges carry between 5 and 25 years in jail, the four sexual assault charges carry a sentence of 25 to 100 years, and the abuse of trust charges have between 10 and 20 years attached.
Smith remained silent during his sentencing.
Smith's ex-girlfriend, Roseanna Thompson, 46, has also been accused of helping Smith film the abuse of his granddaughter in 2015. She is scheduled to stand trial in April.
The pair were arrested after state troopers were tipped off by the suspect's ex-wife that he had child porn at his home.

Equifax nears deal to pay about $700 million to settle U.S. data breach probes: WSJ
(Reuters) - Credit reporting company Equifax Inc (EFX.N) is close to a deal to pay around $700 million to settle data breach probes with U.S. regulators and states, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Equifax will pay the amount to settle with the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and most state attorneys general, the Journal reported.
Equifax said it had no comment on the WSJ report.
The 2017 data breach at the company affected more than 143 million people worldwide.
The amount to be paid by the company could change depending on the number of claims eventually filed by consumers, according to the report, which added that the settlement could be announced as soon as Monday.
The settlement will require the credit reporting firm to make more changes to how it protects and handles consumer data, the WSJ said.
A fund will be established to compensate consumers for the harm that they suffered as a result of the breach, according to the settlement reported by the paper.

The great Equifax mystery:
17 months later, the stolen data has never been found, and experts are starting to suspect a spy scheme
On Sept. 7, 2017, the world heard an alarming announcement from credit ratings giant Equifax: In a brazen cyberattack, somebody had stolen sensitive personal information from more than 140 million people, nearly half the population of the U.S.
It was the consumer data security scandal of the decade. The information included Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, information from credit disputes and other personal details. CEO Richard Smith stepped down under fire. Lawmakers changed credit freeze laws and instilled new regulatory oversight of credit ratings agencies.
Then, something unusual happened. The data disappeared. Completely.

An activist who attends congressional hearings dressed as the mustachioed Monopoly mascot returned to Capitol Hill on Tuesday to attend a hearing with Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
Ian Madrigal sat a few rows behind Pichai during the House Judiciary Committee hearing.
.@Google CEO @SundarPichai testifies on Data Collection before @HouseJudiciary @housejuddems - LIVE on C-SPAN3 https://t.co/w6Qhg7xb5b pic.twitter.com/QnYS2l7BUj
- CSPAN (@cspan) December 11, 2018
Madrigal, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, said in an emailed statement that their presence as Rich Uncle Pennybags is meant to draw attention to Google's lobbying efforts in Congress, as well as the search engine giant's access to customer data.
"Google spent $18 million lobbying politicians in 2017 - more than any other company," Madrigal said. "In return, Congress has abandoned its oversight role and allowed Google to wield monopoly power over every person who uses the internet."
"We have no say in how Google uses even our most personal data, and the only way to opt out is to boycott the internet itself," Madrigal added. "We can't rely on tech giants to self-regulate. It is past time for Congress to step in and do its job."
Google gets trolled by #MonopolyMan pic.twitter.com/SORITzXeyt
- MAJOR STORM (@MAJORSTORM1) December 11, 2018
Madrigal first appeared at the Senate Banking Committee's 2017 hearing on the massive Equifax data breach, sitting directly behind Equifax CEO Richard Smith and occasionally making a show of crinkling dollar bills.
Throughout Smith's hearing, Madrigal adjusted their monocle, wiped their face with a larger-than-life hundred-dollar bill and finally chased the consumer credit reporting firm's chief into an elevator with a bag of money.
Pichai's hearing on Tuesday marks the first time the Google CEO has publicly testified before a congressional committee. He is likely to face questions about allegations of bias against conservatives, data security, and the company's reported work on a censored Chinese search engine.
