The Southern Poverty Law Center, which many consider a hate group disguised as a "law center," was connected to a domestic terrorism case when a shooter attacked the Family Research Council in 2012.
Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Jerry Boykin, executive vice president at the Family Research Council (FRC), told PJ Media that the shooter pleaded guilty to the crime and confessed that he used the SPLC's discredited 'hate map' to target the FRC. According to PJ Media, the SPLC has not reconsidered its "hate group" designation for FRC, and outlets like CNN plastered the SPLC "hate map" online with no caveats.
917. That's the number of hate groups operating in the US, according to data from the Southern Poverty Law Center https://t.co/hsuBqjal9y pic.twitter.com/eMWFiLECfz
- CNN (@CNN) August 17, 2017
PJ Media reports - In March 2019, the SPLC fired its co-founder, Morris Dees, amid allegations of racism and sexism. Former employees have called for the firing of President Richard Cohen, who announced his own resignation this past Friday. The SPLC hired Michelle Obama's former chief of staff, Tina Tchen, to perform an investigation of the organization's workplace culture. Yes, the same Tina Tchen who supported Jussie Smollett's hate hoax...
And now, the SPLC can add an accused domestic terrorist to their long list of crooked employees and board members.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is a controversial watchdog of extremist groups. It has been criticized for its financial practices and for characterizing non-violent conventional conservative organizations as equivalent to violent extremists.
SPLC was co-founded in 1971 by Morris Dees, a lawyer and direct marketing expert and fellow Alabama attorney, Joseph Levin, Jr. 1 They appointed civil rights activist Julian Bond as SPLC's first president. In its first two decades, the SPLC won high-profile civil rights cases and filed lawsuits credited with breaking the Ku Klux Klan. The SPLC combined its legal successes with Dees' direct mail marketing expertise to raise millions of dollars. In later years, the SPLC leveraged its influence to collect and create widely-circulated reports about "hate group" activity around the country.
Dees was fired from his position as SPLC chief trial counsel in March 2019 for unspecific conduct violations. 2 On April 2, 2019, the SPLC announced that attorney Karen Baynes-Dunning would replace Cohen as interim president. 3
Since its victories over the Klan in the 1980s, the SPLC has been widely criticized by both right-of-center and left-of-center observers for its excessive fundraising and controversial methodologies. SPLC's labeling of political opponents as has resulted in mainstream conservative individuals and groups, as well as anti-extremist Muslims, being conflated with neo-Nazis, the KKK, and other actual extremist elements. The SPLC uses its former credibility to smear its political foes; despite this, SPLC is cited by left-leaning mainstream media outlets as a credible source for information about the mainstream right, to widespread criticism. 4
Mainstream technology companies such as Google and Amazon have enlisted SPLC to help compile, track, and vet organizations based on alleged extremist activity. For a short time, charity aggregator Guidestar used SPLC's hate group listings to apply so-called warning labels on 46 nonprofit organizations, but later removed the labels amid a heavy public backlash against its reliance on SPLC.
In 2012, Floyd Lee Corkins attacked the Washington, D.C. headquarters of the social conservative advocacy group Family Research Council (FRC). In his guilty plea agreement, Corkins claimed the SPLC's labeling of FRC as a hate group for its opposition to same-sex marriage as the reason he singled out FRC. 5

One night when he was holding me, he started touching my private parts. Over time, he taught me to touch and play with his. It felt very strange, scary and a little good too. Report: SPLC Tied to Violent Antifa Organization
June 4, 2019Christopher Holton
On 21 May an important article by Tyler O'Neil appeared on PJ Media in which evidence was presented that indicated ties between the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and the violent, political extremist organization Antifa.
Not enough attention has been focused on O'Neill's article and the revelations it disclosed:
https://pjmedia.com/trending/report-shows-online-ties-linking-huffpost-the-guardian-and-splc-to-antifa/
O'Neill cites research from Dr. Eoin Lenihan. Lenihan's data indicates that "chief investigative reporter for the SPLC Matthew Hayden [has] connections within Antifa," which Lenihan describes as "problematic."
Hayden's ties to Antifa are especially troubling given the SPLC's prior acknowledgement of Antifa's violence and outright refusal to include the organization in their list of "hate" groups:
https://capitalresearch.org/article/splc-wont-label-antifa-as-hate-group/
The SPLC's refusal to designate Antifa a hate group was based on the contortionist logic that Antifa's hate was not "discriminatory." That nonsense was expressed by the now former president of the SPLC, Richard Cohen:
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/southern-poverty-law-center-condemns-antifa-but-wont-call-hate-group
Ironically, Cohen resigned under pressure in March due to revelations that the SPLC was overrun with sexual harassment and discriminatory practices on his watch:
https://www.dailysignal.com/2019/03/25/splc-president-Richard-Cohen-resigns-from-embattled-left-wing-nonprofit/
The reality is that the SPLC targets conservative organizations with trumped-up "hate" designations in an effort to stifle speech in much the same way that Antifa uses violence and intimidation to silence its opponents. So evidence of interaction between the two organizations should not come as a surprise.
But the interaction does reveal something about the veracity of the SPLC's claim that they "followed" Antifa. Exactly what did they mean when Cohen said that the SPLC "followed" Antifa?
This would not be the first time that the SPLC's work ended up tied to leftist violence.
In 2012 Floyd Lee Corkins attacked the headquarters of the Family Research Council (FRC) and wounded a security guard. Corkins said that he carried out the attack because the FRC had been listed as a hate group by the SPLC.
As for Antifa, there can be no doubt that Antifa is a violent organization that targets people and organizations for their views. There is a great deal of evidence to demonstrate this:
Antifa professor attacks Trump supporter
Antifa commits assaults at prayer rally in Portland
FBI investigating Antifa plot to buy guns from Mexican drug cartel for armed rebellion
FBI investigating meetings between Antifa and ISIS
Even CNN has acknowledged that Antifa uses violence:
https://www.cnn.com/2017/08/18/us/unmasking-antifa-anti-fascists-hard-left/index.html
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUu46J_OHQ4
In December Antifa members attacked two U.S. Marines in Philadelphia:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpxxTzkb9k4
It can only be described as disturbing that the SPLC has demonstrated ties to an organization that has a pattern of committing acts of violence.

Exaggerating Hate Pays: Scandal-Plagued SPLC Has Millions in Offshore Accounts, Half a Billion in Assets
Last year, the SPLC fired its co-founder, Morris Dees, and saw its president, Richard Cohen, resign amid a sexual harassment and racial discrimination scandal that dated back decades. Dees is a notorious philanderer (as I explain in the book) and black employees complained that the SPLC felt like a "plantation."
The SPLC may have fired Dees, but it still gave him a hefty salary for the time between November 1, 2018, and March 14, 2020. The group's most recent tax filing (covering November 1, 2018, to October 31, 2019) shows Dees made $373,899, with an estimated $44,264 in other forms of compensation. Cohen made $383,231, with an estimated $43,477 in other compensation. Rhonda Brownstein, who also resigned during the scandal, made $233,063, with an extra $31,116 in other compensation.
While the SPLC promised an internal investigation into its workplace culture, it has yet to release the results, more than a year later.
In 2012, a gunman targeted the Family Research Council (FRC), a conservative Christian nonprofit in Washington, D.C., based on the SPLC's "hate group" accusation. The man intended to shoot every person in the building and put a Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich by his or her head. Thanks a brave security guard, his evil plot was foiled, but not before he shot the guard in the arm. He told the FBI that he targeted FRC using the SPLC's map of "anti-gay groups."
Despite all this baggage, the SPLC still enjoys tremendous influence in American culture. Left-leaning news outlets regularly cite it as a credible resource on "hate." In 2017, CNN championed the very same "hate map" that inspired the FRC shooting. Last year, The New York Times, the Miami Herald, and The Palm Beach Post repeated SPLC smears against the national security nonprofit ACT for America, convincing Mar-a-Lago to cancel an ACT for America gala. Amazon Smile excludes any charity on the SPLC's list, YouTube considers the SPLC a "trusted flagger" of content, PayPal and Eventbrite have booted organizations on the list, and Discover has refused credit card processing services to accused "hate groups."
Americans cannot trust this morally bankrupt organization. It is high time the media, Big Tech, and corporate America stop treating the SPLC as an arbiter of hate. Perhaps the IRS should get involved.

Plausible
>There's something strange afoot at the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of the nation's richest civil and human rights charities. In March, the center abruptly fired legendary co-founder Morris Dees. Dees's biography was quickly scrubbed from the center's website, and the SPLC announced this week that Karen Baynes-Dunning would serve as interim president and CEO, giving the civil rights organization its first black female leader.
>In confirming Dees's departure, then-President Richard Cohen emphasized the center's values of "truth, justice, equity, and inclusion," and said vaguely, "When one of our own fails to meet those standards, no matter his or her role in the organization, we take it seriously and must take appropriate action." Subsequent news reports pointed to allegations of racial discrimination and sexual harassment inside an organization that had raised hundreds of millions of dollars from donors to fight just that type of injustice.
>Dees has said little about why he was shown the door after 48 years at the organization he had come to define. But to those of us familiar with the SPLC and its inner workings, the allegations swirling around the latest drama were familiar. The question isn't what went wrong at the SPLC; it is why it took so long for the rest of the country to learn what local reporters already knew. It will probably take a federal investigation to fully unravel this deep-South mystery and provide a credible, long-term fix.
>More than two decades ago, I was managing editor of the Montgomery Advertiser, which was located one block from the SPLC in downtown Montgomery , Ala. I proposed an investigation into the organization after ongoing complaints from former SPLC staffers, who came and went with regularity but always seemed to tell the same story. Only the names and faces changed. The SPLC, they said, was not what it appeared to be. Many urged the newspaper to take a look.
>We were, at the time, anything but adversaries with the center. Like other media outlets, we generally parroted SPLC press releases. We also became friends with SPLC staffers, occasionally attending the center's parties. Some of my reporters dated staffers at the center.
>That relationship, however, suddenly soured when reporters Dan Morse and Greg Jaffe (both of whom now work for The Post) began making serious inquiries about the SPLC's finances and the treatment of black employees.
>SPLC leaders threatened legal action on several occasions, and at one point openly attacked the newspaper's investigation in a mass mailing to Montgomery lawyers and judges. Then they slammed the door.
>"Accommodating your charade of objectivity simply takes too much of our time," center co-founder Joseph J. Levin Jr. wrote the Advertiser in 1993. "Our patience in this matter is exhausted, and we will not respond to further inquiries of any sort."
>In February 1994, after three years of research, the Advertiser published an eight-part series titled "Rising Fortunes: Morris Dees and the Southern Poverty Law Center" that found a litany of problems and questionable practices at the SPLC, including a deeply troubled history with its relatively few black employees, some of whom reported hearing the use of racial slurs by the organization's staff and others who "likened the center to a plantation"; misleading donors with aggressive direct-mail tactics; exaggerating its accomplishments; spending most of its money not on programs but on raising more money; and paying its top staffers (including Dees and Cohen) lavish salaries.
>…SPLC mounted an aggressive campaign against the series when it was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize - it was a 1995 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism.

Gillibrand Promotes Southern Poverty Law Center-Backed Bill
WASHINGTON-Democratic presidential candidate Kirsten Gillibrand is throwing her weight behind legislation that would have the government catalog hate crimes, something the FBI already does.
But waste and redundancy are nothing new in Washington.
What's eye-opening about the move is that the junior senator from New York and her fellow legislative cosponsors cite information from the embattled, radical left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as authoritative in justifying the proposal. Although the SPLC has come under attack from critics in recent years, the left, academia, and mainstream media generally consider SPLC data to be reliable.
The center promotes something called the "Trump Effect," which it blames for thousands of cases of prejudice, bullying, and hate crimes in the nation's schools. The argument, thinly supported with largely anecdotal evidence, is that the election of President Donald Trump in November 2016 unleashed a tidal wave of racial intolerance, white supremacism, and related hate crimes against vulnerable members of minority groups in schools and in society in general.
Gillibrand's bill is SB 2043, the proposed "Khalid Jabara and Heather Heyer National Opposition to Hate, Assaults, and Threats to Equality (NO HATE) Act." An arm of the SPLC, the SPLC Action Fund, is urging the bill's passage.
One of the bill's namesakes, Jabara, was killed Aug. 12, 2016, in a crime reportedly motivated by racial animus. Heyer was killed one year later on Aug. 12, 2017, when a car mowed down counter-demonstrators protesting neo-Nazis at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The text of the bill isn't publicly available.
The measure is also sponsored by Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), and Mark Warner (D-Va.). Three other presidential candidates-Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.)-sponsored a previous version of the legislation.
"The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) reported a sharp uptick in reported hate crimes in the fourth quarter of 2016," according to a press release from Kaine, who was Democrat Hillary Clinton's running mate on the presidential ticket in 2016.
"Researchers have shown that reported hate crimes following President Trump's election made up the second largest surge since the FBI began collecting data in 1992. Yet the FBI's annual Hate Crimes Statistics report vastly understates the true incidence of this problem. In 2017, the report reflected that approximately 7,000 hate crimes occurred nationwide, when the SPLC believes the number is closer to approximately 250,000 per year."
The problem is that research isn't what the SPLC does, according to critics. They say the group pumps out politically skewed reports that target conservatives and moderates who refuse to toe the SPLC line.
In June 2018, the SPLC paid more than $3 million as part of a legal settlement to former Muslim extremist Maajid Nawaz for wrongfully placing him and his counter-extremism think tank, Quilliam, on an anti-Muslim hate list.
"Sometimes, the press will describe us as monitoring hate groups," former SPLC spokesman Mark Potok told a conference in Michigan in 2007. "I want to say plainly that our aim in life is to destroy these groups, completely destroy them," using a "strictly ideological process."
Critics say the Montgomery, Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center, whose founder, Morris Dees, and president, Richard Cohen, were recently ousted allegedly for employee abuse, treats all opposition to illegal or legal immigration, open borders, and multiculturalism as hate, and all political expression of those views as hate speech.
The SPLC also has a record of promoting hate crime hoaxes, critics say, as well as ignoring bias incidents against white people and Jews targeted on university campuses by Islamist and anti-Israel groups.
Floyd Lee Corkins II admitted that he relied upon SPLC reports in 2012 when he attempted a mass shooting at the offices of the Family Research Council, wounding a guard. Because the group opposes same-sex marriage, it was designated a "hate group" by the center, a characterization rejected by left-wing columnist Dana Milbank. In a Washington Post column that year, he referred to the FRC as "a mainstream conservative think tank."
"I disagree with the Family Research Council's views on gays and lesbians," he wrote. "But it's absurd to put the group ... in the same category as Aryan Nations, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Stormfront, and the Westboro Baptist Church."

SPLC 'Hate Group' List Revealed to Be a Cynical Fundraising Scheme
On Friday, Citizens for Corporate Accountability (CCA) delivered a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos demanding his corporation stop using the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) "hate group" list. On Thursday, CCA bought a full-page ad in the Montgomery Advertiser, the newspaper in Montgomery, Ala., where the SPLC is based, demanding the far-left smear factory withdraw its "hate map" and submit to a truly independent investigation. The SPLC gained its reputation by taking the Ku Klux Klan to court, but in recent decades it has used its "hate group" list to smear mainstream conservative and Christian organizations, listing them along with the KKK. Shamefully, news outlets, social media companies, and major corporations have taken the "hate group" list as gospel.
Amazon has been one of the worst offenders. The website runs a charity donation program called Amazon Smile, and it has excluded conservative and Christian groups from the program based on their presence on the SPLC list. D. James Kennedy Ministries sued the SPLC and Amazon in response. Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a prominent Christian law firm, was also excluded, despite the fact that its ideological opponents at ACLU and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation have insisted ADF is not a "hate group." "It is regrettable that Amazon has played a part in this corrupt speech suppression effort by using the SPLC's lists in the Amazon Smile program," CCA Executive Director Brian Glicklich told PJ Media in a statement. "Today, however, there is no legitimate reason for Amazon to continue its reliance on this fraudulent and fatally flawed product." "We request and require that Amazon immediately terminate use of SPLC's 'hate group' list and associated materials in determining eligibility for the Amazon Smile program," Glicklich said.
The letter, sent to Bezos and Amazon Senior Vice President of Global Corporate Affairs Jay Carney, demanded that Amazon drop the "hate group" list and "publicly renounce" it. "The 'hate group' list falsely purports to identify dangerous organizations promoting hate and violence, and Amazon has acceded to the demands of SPLC that Amazon terminate participation of named organizations in the Amazon Smile program," the letter states. "However, this list mixes together racist and violent organizations like the Ku Klux Klan with those that simply espouse mainstream political and social views with which the SPLC and apparently many of its donors disagree. For this reason, the list is permanently compromised, and cannot be relied upon for business decisions by Amazon or any other organization."
The letter also mentions the far-left smear factory's debilitating racism and sexism scandal. In recent weeks, the SPLC fired its co-founder, Morris Dees, President Richard Cohen stepped down, and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson removed herself from the Board of Directors. Tina Tchen, Michelle Obama's former chief of staff and a lawyer who attempted to help Jussie Smollett's hate hoax, is leading an internal investigation. Conservatives have decried the choice of Tchen, due to her liberal connections.
Mainstream media outlets have covered the organization's corruption, and two exposes have revealed the "hate group" list to be a crass marketing ploy. "Numerous employees and journalists have reported that the SPLC's so-called 'hate group' list is not a principled database, but rather a highly successful and cynical fundraising tool," the CCA letter reads. "Former employees have described in great detail how the now-terminated SPLC founder developed the list to generate large donations from 'gullible northern liberals.'"
Current Affairs Editor Nathan J. Robinson slammed the "hate map" as an "outright fraud," a "willful deception designed to scare older liberals into writing checks to the SPLC."
The "hate group" list has numerous problems. First, the group defames mainstream conservative and Christian groups that are not hateful at all. The list also inflates numbers by counting each chapter of an organization as a separate "group." In addition, as Robinson pointed out, some of the "groups" are defunct, have only one person, or may just be a blog. A PJ Media analysis found that the "hate group" list inflates the numbers at least three times over.

Two of the remaining top-level staff at the embattled Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) threatened to call the police on a Daily Caller reporter on Thursday, as he tried to ask about their knowledge of sexual harassment by Morris Dees.
Heidi Beirich and Maureen Costello, Director of the Intelligence Project and Teaching Tolerance respectively, were spotted in downtown DC, coming in and out of the Daily Caller's building throughout the day. Costello took over the Teaching Tolerance project in 2010, and Beirich joined the SPLC back in 1999.
The board and senior leadership of the SPLC has for years been stacked with friends and allies of the disgraced founder Morris Dees. Dees, according to two letters by staffers, had been accused in "multiple reports of sexual harassment by Dees through the years [which] had been ignored or covered up, and sometimes resulted in retaliation against the women making the claims," according to The New Yorker.
Few details have emerged about what has gone on within the Birmingham-based nonprofit since the departure in recent weeks of founder Morris Dees, president Richard Cohen, and several others. The Daily Caller's Wyatt Dobrovich-Fago took the opportunity of their visit to the nation's capital to ask the embattled warriors of tolerance what they knew about their former colleague's alleged lechery.
After a brief exchange in the lobby of the building, the SPLC officials attempted to ignore the Daily Caller reporter, then threatened to call the police if he continued to ask questions.
"Do you know anything about the sexual harassment of-" the reporter began.
"I'm not joking. I'm asking you to step off and if you don't I'll call the cops." SPLC Intelligence Project Director Heidi Beirich interrupted.

Exclusive: Tom Cotton Pushes IRS to Investigate Southern Poverty Law Center's Tax-Exempt Status
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) is pressing the IRS to investigate the tax-exempt status of leftist group Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), an organization that has been mired in scandal. Cotton argues that a series of recent reports regarding the leftist group's patently political activities are troubling, and in a letter to the head of the IRS provided to Breitbart News exclusively ahead of its public release questions whether these actions warrant removal of the group's status as a nonprofit organization.
"I am writing to urge you to investigate whether the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) should retain its classification as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization," Cotton wrote in the Tuesday letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig. "Recent news reports have confirmed the long-established fact that the SPLC regularly engages in defamation of its political opponents. In fact, the SPLC's defining characteristic is to fundraise off of defamation."
Cotton noted in the letter to the IRS commissioner, citing SPLC financial documents, that the leftist organization has made lots of money by targeting conservative groups with allegations that they are hate groups-regardless of the veracity of such allegations. "This business model has paid well. The SPLC has accrued more than $500 million in assets," Cotton wrote. "According to the group's most recent financial statement, it holds $121 million offshore in non-U.S. equity funds. The SPLC uses these assets to pay its executives lavish salaries far higher than the comparable household average." Cotton's letter cites a number of recent investigative reports by the media into SPLC's standards and culture, including a recently-published CNN exposé where staff alleged racism and sexism running rampant throughout the leftist group's organizational structure.
"Famous civil rights group suffers from 'systemic culture of racism and sexism,' staffers say," was the headline in CNN's March 29 article by Nick Valencia and Pamela Kirkland. "Some employees at the Southern Poverty Law Center say the legendary civil rights nonprofit group suffers from a 'systemic culture of racism and sexism within its workplace,'" Valencia and Kirkland wrote. "The SPLC, which has been on the front line of the fight against racial inequality and injustice in the United States since 1971, has been thrust into chaos after allegations over its treatment of minority and female employees. The claims have been followed by changes in its leadership and a company-wide review."
Cotton also cites a New York Times report from Alan Blinder published on March 22 that Cotton noted described the SPLC as "in turmoil" while citing SPLC employee claims that the organization and its leadership are "complicit in decades of racial discrimination, gender discrimination, and sexual harassment and/or assault." Both Richard Cohen, the organization's president, and Morris Dees, the organization's co-founder, have been pushed out in recent days amid these scandals - and the SPLC has named an interim president to lead the group for now. "Based on these reports, and in the interest of protecting taxpayer dollars from a racist and sexist slush fund devoted to defamation, I believe that the SPLC's conduct warrants a serious and thorough investigation," Cotton wrote to the IRS commissioner. "Engaging in systematic defamation is not a tax-exempt purpose: Federal law requires nonprofits classified as 501(c)(3) organizations to comply with IRS guidelines and have a 'tax-exempt purpose.' While IRS guidance lists several examples of tax-exempt purposes, engaging in defamation as a business model is of course not one of them. The SPLC defames other organizations in several ways."

Wheels come off the Southern Poverty Law Center
On March 14, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the left-liberal civil rights nonprofit group known for its conspicuous wealth and ever-expanding lists of right-wing "hate" figures and organizations, abruptly fired 82-year-old Morris Dees. Dees, an Alabama lawyer, is the man who founded the SPLC in Montgomery in 1971 and built it into a fundraising powerhouse with assets approaching $500 million. Not long after his departure, President Richard Cohen and legal director Rhonda Brownstein, both of whom have been at the center since 1986, resigned.
The SPLC hasn't said much about the three departures, especially that of Dees, whose profile, though not photos, it scrubbed from its website. News media reported allegations of sexual harassment and racial and gender discrimination that had circulated on in-house emails. New female members of staff had allegedly been warned repeatedly about overtures from the five-times-married Dees. The SPLC's highest-ranking black woman, senior attorney Meredith Horton, had resigned, and according to the Los Angeles Times, other female staffers had signed letters protesting office mistreatment and discrimination. Cohen issued a statement implying that Dees had failed to meet the SPLC's "standards" of "truth, justice, equity and inclusion."

More SPLC Employees Step Forward, Claim "Systemic Culture Of Racism And Sexism"
One week after the head of the Southern Poverty Law Center and the organization's legal director resigned, more employees are coming forward to tell CNN that the nonprofit group suffers from a "systemic culture of sexism within its workplace."
SPLC Co-founder Morris Dees, former president Richard Cohen, former legal director Rhonda Brownstein
This comes after two dozen employees signed a letter of concern over "allegations of mistreatment, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism following the ouster of co-founder Morris Dees over sexual misconduct claims.
CNN spoke with three current employees of the organization who talked on condition of anonymity because of fears over possible retribution.
It was one of those employees who cited the systemic problems with racism and sexism, and a second employee agreed with that assessment.
…
But one of the employees who spoke to CNN alleged the organization suffers from a "pervasive racist culture" and an environment in which a woman is not seen or heard. She also said qualified African-American employees were regularly passed over for promotions – including one African-American colleague she describes as brilliant. She added, "My boss only hires white people." -CNN
Sounds like conservative pundit Gavin McInnes was right when he said the SPLC is "frothing with bigots." McInnes is suing the nonprofit for labeling his fraternal organization, the Proud Boys, a hate group.
Earlier this month, the SPLC board of directors appointed Michelle Obama's former chief of staff, Tina Tchen to head up the inquiry into the sexual misconduct claims. In an unrelated matter, Tchen was apparently was able to pull strings and have the Jussie Smollett case dropped.

Inside the SPLC "Scam"
As the Washington Examiner's Beckett Adams wrote last week, the Southern Poverty Law Center is a "scam," which has taken "no care whatsoever for the reputational and personal harm it causes by lumping Christians and anti-extremist activists with actual neo-Nazis."
As it turns out, the SPLC is a cynical money-making scheme, according to a former staffer's blistering tell-all, published this week in the New Yorker. The center's chief goal is to bilk naive and wealthy donors who believe it's an earnest effort to combat bigotry.
The only thing worse than a snarling partisan activist is a slimy conman who merely pretends to be one. -Washington Examiner
""Outside of work," recalls Bob Moser of his days working for the organization, "we spent a lot of time drinking and dishing in Montgomery bars and restaurants about ... the hyperbolic fund-raising appeals, and the fact that, though the center claimed to be effective in fighting extremism, 'hate' always continued to be on the rise, more dangerous than ever, with each year's report on hate groups. 'The S.P.L.C.-making hate pay,' we'd say."

TINA TCHEN JUST STARTED WORKING FOR THE SPLC

https://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/story/news/2019/03/19/splc-hires-tina-tchen-review-workplace-culture-after-morris-dees-firing/3203323002/
Days after it fired co-founder Morris Dees for undisclosed misconduct issues, the Southern Poverty Law Center hired a Chicago-based lawyer well-versed in gender and racial equity issues to review its workplace environment and policies.
Tina Tchen previously worked as chief of staff to then-first lady Michelle Obama and now leads a "workplace cultural compliance" practice at Buckley LLP, which examines "gender and racial equity, sexual harassment" and other diversity barriers in the workplace.
The review was announced on Thursday alongside the termination of Dees. SPLC President Richard Cohen said at the time Dees failed to adhere to the organization's "values," hinting at misconduct.
"The events of the last week have been an eye-opening reminder that the walk towards justice must sometimes start at your own front door and force you to look at your past so you can improve your future," said Bryan Fair, chair of SPLC's board, in a release. "A key first step in that process for the SPLC is an immediate, top-to-bottom external review of our workplace culture and our past practices and policies. Tina Tchen's extraordinary experience and qualifications will be indispensable in helping us build a more effective and just organization."
According to a biography on Buckley LLP's website, Tchen previously served as chief of staff to first lady Michelle Obama and assistant to President Barack Obama. She was involved in multiple White House gender equity initiatives, as well as in the formation of the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault. She is also a co-founder of the TIME'S UP Legal Defense Fund, according to an SPLC release.
Tchen on Monday would not specifically speak to the issues her SPLC review might focus on, though she said it would look "holistically" at its workplace culture to "build diverse workplaces" for all groups of people.
"This is an incredible institution in our country, and I'm honored to be working with them to build a workplace that will live up to the values of SPLC, of justice and equality," Tchen said.
Though it remains unclear what may have led to Dees' termination last week, the civil rights lawyer has weathered criticism for decades, with a 1994 Montgomery Advertiser series citing concerns about racial discrimination against back employees.
Staffers at the time "accused Morris Dees, the center's driving force, of being a racist and black employees have 'felt threatened and banded together.'" Dees strenuously denied the accusation at the time.
A review of the center's 2019 board and senior staff reveals that senior leadership at SPLC remains largely white. This week, multiple employees sent a signed letter to SPLC leadership outlining concerns about workplace culture as well as sexism and racism, according to a Los Angeles Times report. Former employees tell the Advertiser the SPLC has been a "toxic" work environment for some time, with high employee turnover.
But it's unclear if these complaints are directly connected to Dees' termination, as the aging co-founder said he hadn't tried a case in nearly a decade and was not involved in the center's day-to-day operations. A former employee said he maintained a desk at the Montgomery office in recent years, but wasn't in the office every day.
Tchen said Monday her charge is to look at the entire organization, not just its Montgomery headquarters, and to craft recommendations
"Every workplace, including social justice organizations, must work hard to create a workplace culture that fully reflects their values and priorities, including when it comes to racial and gender diversity," Tchen said in a release. "I am honored to have been asked to lead a comprehensive process to address all aspects of the workplace culture at SPLC, and look forward to working with staff, management and the board to build a workplace at SPLC that will truly reflect respect and safety for all, and the principles that SPLC has long stood for: truth, justice, equity and inclusion."

SPLC Implodes: President And Legal Director Resign Amid Sexual Misconduct Scandal
The Southern Poverty Law Center - the "vicious left-wing attack dog" used by the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Google and Amazon to identify "hate groups" - is unraveling.
A week after co-founder Morris Dees was ousted over sexual misconduct claims - with two dozen employees signing a letter of concern over "allegations of mistreatment, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism," the head of the SPLC, Richard Cohen, as well as the organization's legal director, Rhonda Brownstein, resigned on Friday.
Cohen had been with the organization 33 years and was one of its most prominent figures.
At 5:03 p.m. Friday, Cohen sent a message to staff, with the subject line "Stepping Down," announcing that he, too, would be leaving the organization that he and Dees had turned into a research and fundraising juggernaut.
"Whatever problems exist at the SPLC happened on my watch, so I take responsibility for them," Cohen wrote, while asking the staff to avoid jumping to conclusions before the board completes an internal review of the Montgomery, Ala., organization's work culture. -LA Times
Earlier this week, the SPLC board of directors appointed Michelle Obama's former chief of staff, Tina Tchen - who, in an unrelated matter, unsuccessfully tried to pull strings and have the Jussie Smollett case transferred from the Chicago PD to the FBI. Tchen is heading up the inquiry into the sexual misconduct claims.
Also out on Friday was Rhonda Brownstein - who had worked with the organization for nearly three decades, according to the Montgomery Advertiser's Melissa Brown.
Inside the SPLC "Scam"
As the Washington Examiner's Beckett Adams writes, the Southern Poverty Law Center is a "scam," which has taken " no care whatsoever for the reputational and personal harm it causes by lumping Christians and anti-extremist activists with actual neo-Nazis."
"[I]t was hard, for many of us, not to feel like we'd become pawns in what was, in many respects, a highly profitable scam," added Moser.

"The Southern Poverty Law Center is being forced to reckon with its own intolerence after its two highest-ranking executives have resigned in disgrace.
"The president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Richard Cohen, announced his resignation Friday, the latest in a series of high-profile departures at the anti-hate organization that have come amid allegations of misconduct and workplace discrimination," the LA Times reported.
Last week, Morris Dees, a cofounder of group, was forced to resign amid vague allegations of misconduct. It was later reported that an email circulated from former SPLC employee Meredith Horton had accused management of maltreatment of female and minority employees. That prompted the group to launch an internal probe of workplace culture, led by former Obama administration official Tina Tchen.
"Whatever problems exist at the SPLC happened on my watch, so I take responsibility for them," Cohen reportedly told staff in his email resignation.
Friday, the organization's legal director, Rhonda Brownstein, also resigned via email."

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is a "highly profitable scam" that "never lived up to the values it espoused," according to former SPLC staffer Bob Moser.
The New Yorker on Thursday published a scathing essay from Moser, now a Rolling Stone reporter, accusing the left-wing non-profit of "ripping off donors" while turning a blind eye to sexual harassment and racial discrimination within its own ranks.
The SPLC fired co-founder Morris Dees on March 13 over unspecified conduct issues.
The SPLC announced Dees' firing after roughly two dozen SPLC employees previously signed a letter to the organization's leadership expressing their alarm at "allegations of mistreatment, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism," The Los Angeles Times reported.

Q Research General #7464: Russia Investigation Concluded Edition
Saw in notables from a bread or two back that Richard Cohen of the SPLC just resigned.
Googled it to read more and saw another headline from 9 days ago: "Southern Poverty Law Center fires co-founder Morris Dees"
"SPLC President Richard Cohen said in a statement Dees' dismissal over his misconduct was effective on Wednesday, March 13. When pressed for details on what led to the termination, the organization declined to elaborate.
"As a civil rights organization, the SPLC is committed to ensuring that the conduct of our staff reflects the mission of the organization and the values we hope to instill in the world," Cohen said in the emailed statement. "When one of our own fails to meet those standards, no matter his or her role in the organization, we take it seriously and must take appropriate action.""

Washington Post columnist, 78, says Sanders, 77, and Biden, 76, too old to be president
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/washington-post-columnist-78-says-sanders-77-and-biden-76-too-old-to-be-president
Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen, 78, said in a piece published Monday night that both Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden are too old to be president.
"Biden and Sanders have waited too long. A pledge to serve only a single term would not reverse the clock. It would only hobble the president, making him a lame duck before his time," Cohen said in his latest opinion piece. "Of course, the ultimate decision is their own, but they have to know they will probably decline. If they don't think so, they have gotten old without getting wise."
Cohen joked that people his age have other worries on their mind, and surely both Biden, 76, and Sanders, 77, have those same kinds of thoughts and conversations with their colleagues.
"The joke among people my age is that every dinner party starts with an organ recital: Who's lost a gall bladder, got a new kidney or maybe just replaced a knee? What's the pain of the day, and who sleeps through the night?"
Riffing on "comfort zones" among the elderly, Cohen said he "wouldn't be surprised if Biden thought Snapchat was a breakfast cereal. I wouldn't be surprised if Sanders thought Drake was the English pirate who defeated the Spanish Armada. (How's that for being an influencer?)"
Cohen also opined that a president doesn't have to be "intimately familiar with youth culture" but does need to the ability to "translate a thought into politically acceptable language" for the culture that he or she lives in.
The current RealClearPolitics average shows both Biden and Sanders leading the pack in the hunt for the Democratic presidential nomination at 30 percent and 22 percent respectively.

New Zealand mosque attack difficult to prevent despite Five Eyes intelligence sharing, Experts say
On Friday afternoon local time, a gunman carried out an attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 49 people.
But as people across the globe mourn, questions have been raised about whether the attack could have been prevented with better intelligence sharing and online surveillance.
The alleged shooter appears to have had a significant online footprint, with pictures of his weapons posted online before the shooting and an apparent manifesto describing the contours of his white supremacist and right-wing ideology shared on social media.
Recently, some questioned New Zealand's role in the Five Eyes alliance-a group of countries that also includes the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia-which share intelligence among each other. Critics have argued that New Zealand should be kicked out of Five Eyes for its slow response to political interference by the Chinese Communist Party. Others, however, say that New Zealand is too close of an ally to shut out.
But many national security experts say Friday's shooting in New Zealand probably could not have been prevented, even with robust intelligence sharing measures.
"Five Eyes intelligence sharing in my experience did not delve deeply into what we would consider to be domestic terrorism. So any shortfall in this area would not have involved singling out New Zealand for China reasons, or any other," Nicholas Rasmussen, a national security and counterterrorism expert at The McCain Institute for International Leadership, told Newsweek.
"And to be sure, if the U.S. had any information at all that would have pointed to any potential attack by any terrorist, domestic or international, we would have shared that information. Full stop. We have a duty to warn and that extends beyond just Five Eyes partners, indeed to pretty much everybody," Rasmussen added.
…
Meanwhile, others have pointed to the easy way that white supremacy is spreading in online chat rooms in the current political climate.
"The atrocity in New Zealand shows us, once again, that we're dealing with an international terrorist movement linked by a dangerous white supremacist ideology that's metastasizing in the echo chambers of internet chat rooms and on social media networks," Richard Cohen, president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, said in a statement.
"In this case, a killer attacked Muslims worshiping at two mosques. In November, a killer massacred Jews at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. Though the victims were different, and the attacks came in different parts of the world, the terrorists shared the same ideology of white supremacist hate."

Southern Poverty Law Center fires co-founder amid misconduct concerns
March 15 (UPI) – One of the co-founders of the Southern Poverty Law Center – a longtime nonprofit civil advocacy group – has been removed from the organization for misconduct.
The Alabama- based group announced Morris Dees' departure in a statement from President Richard Cohen Thursday.
"We're committed to ensuring that our workplace embodies the values we espouse – truth, justice, equity, and inclusion. When one of our own fails to meet those standards, no matter his or her role in the organization, we take it seriously and must take appropriate action."
Cohen acknowledged misconduct but didn't elaborate on how it relates to Dees.

Big League Politics spoke with someone who is in contact with several SPLC employees, whom the source described as "whistleblowers." The source, who asked to remain anonymous, said that there is increasing tension between the SPLC's employees and its management. "There's a lot of anger and resentment inside the company. Their black employees are paid less than their white ones," the source said. "Dees feels that he's being scapegoated because the SPLC was down a whole bunch of money. They didn't raise that much money last year." Morris had previously been accused of discriminatory treatment of black employees. When Big League Politics called the SPLC media center to ask why specifically Dees was fired, we were stonewalled. Last year, Big League Politics exposed several alleged misdeeds of Dees from court documents obtained from his divorce proceedings. The bombshell revelation was that Dees was accused of attempting to molest his stepdaughter with a sex toy. He also allegedly had an affair with an SPLC employee.

Southern Poverty Law Center Fires Founder Morris Dees, Suggests Misconduct
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), one of the country's most well-funded "anti-hate" organizations, announced Thursday that it has fired its founder Morris Dees, suggesting in a statement that misconduct played a role in the decision.
"Effective yesterday, Morris Dees' employment at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) was terminated. As a civil rights organization, the SPLC is committed to ensuring that the conduct of our staff reflects the mission of the organization and the values we hope to instill in the world," SPLC president Richard Cohen said in a statement. According to the Montgomery Advertiser, Dees' biography no longer appears on the Montgomery-based organization's website. In a statement to the Associated Press, Dees said his dismissal involved a personnel issue and called the SPLC a "wonderful" organization. He said he wishes the organization luck.
Dees, a Montgomery-based lawyer, co-founded the SPLC in 1971. Tax records show in 2017 that the organization had $450 million in assets.
The development comes as observers say the organization's credibility has eroded, in part, due to its overzealous adding of conservatives groups to its "hate list." A recent Washington Post opinion-editorial criticized the SPLC for a series of recent "blunders," which included its failed attempt to label House and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and author Maajid Nawaz as "extremists."
For decades, the hate list was a golden seal of disapproval, considered nonpartisan enough to be heeded by government agencies, police departments, corporations and journalists. But in recent years, as the list has swept up an increasing number of conservative activists - mostly in the anti-LGBT, anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim categories - those conservatives have been fighting back. Boykin, of the FRC, recently sent a letter to about 100 media outlets (including The Washington Post) and corporate donors on behalf of four dozen groups and individuals "who have been targeted, defamed, or otherwise harmed" by the SPLC, warning that the hate list is no longer to be trusted. Mathew Staver, chairman of the Christian legal advocacy group Liberty Counsel, told me 60 organizations are interested in suing the SPLC.
...
Along the way, the SPLC undermined its own credibility with a couple of blunders. In 2015, it apologized for listing Ben Carson as an extremist (though not on the hate list), saying the characterization was inaccurate. Then, this past June, the group paid $3.4 million to Muslim activist Maajid Nawaz and his Quilliam organization to settle a threatened lawsuit.
In addition to Nawaz, conservative pundit and Vice co-founder Gavin McInnes sued the SPLC in February, accusing the organization of "defaming" him by publishing "false, damaging and defamatory" information in an attempt to "deplatform" him.

"Alfie lives in a seemingly happy home with his parents, brother, and sister, but his father is always working and yells a lot. Uncle Pete comes to stay with them and gives Alfie attention, including unwanted sexual attention, calling it their ``special secret.'' As Alfie grows into a teen, he is teased about being gay. Finally, he goes to a counselor who tells him he isn't gay and that he just missed his father's love and was taught wrong things by his uncle. The same man talks to Alfie's parents, they stop fighting, and Dad begins to spend time with his son playing ball and camping. Uncle Pete is also confronted, but is forgiven when he cries. Now Alfie is ready to date Nancy, whom he marries, and they have a boy and a girl whom they love a lot."

Center for Immigration Studies sues Southern Poverty Law Center over false "hate group" designation
The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) has filed a lawsuit against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), claiming that SPLC operators Richard Cohen and Heidi Beirich have violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) by "falsely designating CIS as a hate group."
CIS describes itself as "an independent, non-partisan, non-profit, research organization" that "pursue[s[ a single mission - providing immigration policymakers, the academic community, news media, and concerned citizens with reliable information about the social, economic, environmental, security, and fiscal consequences of legal and illegal immigration into the United States."
The SPLC, on the other hand, describes itself on its website as "dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality."
If you go to the SPLC website, the CIS mission is presented as being the "go-to think tank for the anti-immigrant movement" and racism:
The Center for Immigration Studies, like the rest of the organized anti-immigrant movement we see in America today, was founded by John Tanton, a Michigan ophthalmologist turned population control alarmist whose racist beliefs stirred him to create a network of organizations with a simple agenda: heavily restricting the immigration levels to the United States in order to maintain a white majority. As Tanton himself wrote in 1993, "I've come to the point of view that for European-American society and culture to persist requires a European-American majority, and a clear one at that."
"CIS's much-touted tagline is 'low immigration, pro-immigrant,' but the organization has a decades-long history of circulating racist writers, while also associating with white nationalists," SPLC continues.
Now CIS has responded to SPLC's statements by filing a lawsuit.

Immigration group files suit to force Southern Poverty Law Center revoke 'hate' label
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/jan/16/immigration-group-files-rico-lawsuit-splc/
"The Center for Immigration Studies is not the only group to protest the SPLC's profligate use of the hate tag, but it appears to be the first to mount a challenge under RICO, a law that is usually associated with the FBI's anti-mob efforts.
The center says the SPLC defines hate groups as organizations whose official statements or activities "attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics."
Mr. Krikorian said that doesn't define his group, whose motto is "pro immigrant, low immigration." In practice, he said, that means the center makes the case for "fewer immigrants but a warmer welcome for those admitted."
The center says it doesn't think its work amounts to attacks on people but rather attempts to raise policy questions.
Beyond that, Mr. Krikorian said, the Supreme Court has held that being an immigrant is not an immutable characteristic, so maligning migrants wouldn't qualify as hate anyway.
The center's work is widely cited in the press, including in The Washington Times. It issues awards for press coverage of immigration, including, in the past, to The Times. Its analysts are regularly called to testify before Congress and have been invited to meet with top security officials in the Obama and Trump administrations.
The center's work also is used by independent fact-checkers such as PolitiFact.com, which in 2017 fact-checked the SPLC's hate designation. PolitiFact concluded that most of the evidence was guilt by association.
Under the Trump administration, the center's profile has grown. Some former staffers have been hired for government jobs, and analysts have conducted interviews with top Homeland Security Department officials in events broadcast on C-SPAN."

One of the most prominent groups advocating for stricter immigration went to court Wednesday to demand a judge order the Southern Poverty Law Center to stop labeling it a "hate group," accusing the self-described watchdog of running an illegal racket to silence political opponents.
The Center for Immigration Studies says the SPLC's accusations that it is racist and anti-immigrant are wrong and have cost the nonprofit support and financial backing by scaring people away from doing business with the center.
The center brought its challenge to U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia by filing a civil complaint under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act against SPLC President Richard Cohen and Heidi Beirich, who runs the group's Hatewatch blog.
Mark Krikorian, the Center for Immigration Studies executive director, says his organization doesn't meet the SPLC's definition of a hate group and the Alabama-based watchdog knows it but persists anyway - which he said was evidence of the racket.
"SPLC and its leaders have every right to oppose our work on immigration, but they do not have the right to label us a hate group and suggest we are racists," he said. "The Center for Immigration Studies is fighting back against the SPLC smear campaign and its attempt to stifle debate through intimidation and name-calling."
…
The center's work is widely cited in the press, including in The Washington Times. It issues awards for press coverage of immigration, including, in the past, to The Times. Its analysts are regularly called to testify before Congress and have been invited to meet with top security officials in the Obama and Trump administrations.
The center's work also is used by independent fact-checkers such as PolitiFact.com, which in 2017 fact-checked the SPLC's hate designation. PolitiFact concluded that most of the evidence was guilt by association.
Those interviews raised the ire of congressional Democrats. Joe Crowley, as House Democratic caucus chairman, fired off a note last year urging the chief of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to cancel an appearance, saying the Center for Immigration Studies spread "abhorrent viewpoints, including white supremacism and anti-Semitism."
Mr. Cohen, in a statement to The Times, said the center "richly deserves the hate group label" and he looked forward to battling the group in court.
The SPLC, in its write-up, said the center made the list in 2016 after circulating a weekly reading list that sometimes linked to "white nationalist and antisemitic writers" and by commissioning work from a former Heritage Foundation employee who the SPLC said had been ousted "for his embrace of racist pseudoscience."
Of Mr. Krikorian, the SPLC says: "While capable of appearing as a sober-minded policy analyst in some settings, longtime CIS executive director Mark Krikorian's contributions to the immigration policy debate rarely rise above petulant commentary dashed with extremist statements."
…
In recent years, the group has become a major player in questions of Muslim rights and the immigration debate, and it has expanded its list of haters to include groups that may have taken politically controversial stands but had not generally been accused of racism.
The more expansive role also has earned it new headaches.
The SPLC last year agreed to pay a $3.4 million settlement to a Muslim activist whom the group in 2016 listed among "anti-Muslim extremists." Mr. Cohen issued a statement in June acknowledging his group botched that one.
The group has been making increasing forays into activism, which can build tension with its more long-standing role as a clearinghouse for information.
…
The center says that has cost it at least $10,000 in donations.
Because it doesn't meet the SPLC's definition of a hate group yet the SPLC uses that label online, the center said, it amounts to wire fraud in violation of RICO.
The center says it wants a judge to award damages and order the SPLC to remove the "hate" label, and it wants the SPLC to affirmatively state on its website "that CIS is not a hate group."
RICO has been used to settle other thorny political clashes, including by the National Organization for Women, which in the 1980s and 1990s filed civil RICO claims against pro-life activists at abortion clinics.
The National Organization for Women said the protesters' actions amounted to extortion and asked for triple damages allowed under RICO. Decades of litigation produced a mixed outcome.

Q Research #652: Where the hell did NSA Anon come from Edition
>>530357 The SPLC's IRS Form 990 for the year ending October 31, 2015 showed total income of $54.2 million, and expenses of $45.3 million with a surplus of $8.9 million. The organization has a net worth of $315 million, and the top salaries were paid to Morris Dees, Chief Trial Counsel, $337,146; Richard Cohen, President, $333,296; Wendy Via, Chief of Development, $186,645; Jerri Katzerman, Deputy Legal Director, $183,752; and Joseph Levin, General Counsel, $160,626.[6]
The last year that the Better Business Bureau's Philanthropic Advisory Service reported on the SPLC, in 1994, Dees and then Executive Director Edward Ashworth took home over $150,000 each, and the organization then possessed over $62 million in assets.[7] It now controls over $200 million, and Dees pulls $286,000 in salary.[8] In 2000, SPLC fundraised $27 million and made an additional $17 million from investments, but spent only $13 million on its civil rights program.[9] It is no longer listed in the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance[10] because that would require that "at least 50 percent of total income from all sources, should be applied to programs and activities directly related to the purposes for which the organization exists." The SPLC spent 89 percent of its total income on fund-raising and administrative costs.[11]
The SPLC has also been moving millions of dollars out of the U.S. into international accounts which is can use at will with no accountability. As a non-profit organization, this kind of activity is at the very least irregular if not illegal.[12] By September 2017, they had amassed at least $67 million in these offshore accounts.[13]
In addition to donations from liberal members, which are often elicited by sensationalizing hate crimes, the center raises a lot of revenue seizing assets of violent groups, and by extorting groups that do not want to be accused of racism. In 1987, the SPLC won a major case on behalf of Beulah Mae Donald, the mother of a Klan lynching victim. This was the invention of a clever new tactic-suing domestic terrorist groups into bankruptcy-but Ms. Donald benefitted very little. Of the $7 million verdict, only $50,000 went to her. This was because the Klan chapter had no assets other than a warehouse used as a headquarters, the warehouse itself was valued at about $50,000.[14]
The SPLC's fundraising tactics came under heavy criticism most recently by the Council of Conservative Citizens,[15] as well as by articles in Harper's magazine in 2000[16] and in the local Montgomery Advertiser newspaper in 1994.[17]

//
The SPLC operates a covert spy network targeting primarily politically- and religiously-oriented white citizens, organizations, and publications; institutes civil lawsuits to destroy organizations and individuals by sullying their reputations and bankrupting them-an end run around the First Amendment's guarantees of freedom of speech and association; and cooperates on a large scale behind closed doors with government agencies to achieve the same objective.
The SPLC works with, instructs, and sets racial and ideological agendas for local, state, and federal police agencies, including the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, supplying data on private citizens and groups that it is illegal for the government to collect.
The SPLC also produces highly-influential anti-white, anti-conservative, and anti-Christian propaganda widely utilized by the Establishment press, academia, schools, and so on to defame and marginalize American targets.
