NZ Deputy Police Commissioner Charged Over Alleged Child Sex Exploitation, Bestiality Material
New Zealand's former deputy police commissioner lost the right to anonymity Monday after he was charged with possessing child sexual exploitation and bestiality material.
Jevon McSkimming was arrested in June and charged with eight counts of possessing objectionable material, but the courts had prevented media from reporting his name or other details of the case.
Appearing in Wellington District Court on Monday, McSkimming opted not to seek an extension of the suppression order.
His lawyer, Letizea Ord, told Judge Tim Black "there is not a further application in respect of name suppression. It's accepted that it can lapse today".
He is yet to enter a plea.
Asked as he left court if he had a message for the public, McSkimming said: "No".
The 52-year-old is alleged to have possessed child exploitation and bestiality material between specific dates.
One of the charges states the offenses happened between July 2020 and December 2024.
McSkimming was suspended from his job on full pay in December 2024, when an investigation into his conduct was launched.
Details of those allegations cannot be reported.
He was on leave for six months before his resignation in May.
Judge Black remanded McSkimming on bail, and he will reappear before the court in November.
New Zealand's police commissioner, Richard Chambers, has refused to speak to the media, other than a statement in May acknowledging McSkimming's resignation.
Chambers beat McSkimming to win the police commissioner role in November 2024. A month later, McSkimming was put on leave.
In an email last month to police staff, reported by Radio New Zealand, Chambers said he was aware people felt "angry and feel let down".
"I feel the same," Chambers said.
Minister of Police Mark Mitchell has also declined to comment on the case, but has expressed concern about the reputational damage it could cause.
"I hope that the public see through and realise that we have got an outstanding police force, we've got incredible police officers," Mitchell said last month.
"In this case, even though it involves one of our most senior police officers, you've seen that action was taken very quickly to make sure that that public confidence can be maintained."

Human trafficking action week: 219 criminals arrested and 1 374 victims identified
EMPACT joint action days 'GLOBAL CHAIN' focused on cases of sexual exploitation, forced criminality and forced begging
Between 3 and 9 June, 39 countries from across the globe participated in the EMPACT joint action days against trafficking in human beings. Led by Austria and co-led by Romania, Europol, Frontex and INTERPOL, the massive operation codenamed 'GLOBAL CHAIN' resulted in the arrest of 219 persons and the identification of over 1374 victims, including 153 children. Aimed at disrupting high-risk criminal networks, the action week focused on cases of sexual exploitation, forced criminality and forced begging.
Building on the operation's successful previous iterations, the proven multidisciplinary approach involved Europol, Frontex and INTERPOL along with police forces and border guards from several continents. This year, one aim was to identify and disrupt the most-threatening criminal networks active in the EU, such as mafia-type, ethnicity- and family-based organisations and other structured networks engaged in trafficking of human beings. Within the criminal phenomena of sexual exploitation, forced begging and forced criminality, law enforcement put a special emphasis on targeting cases involving children as victims.
Similar to actions carried out in the years prior, this large-scale and jointly-executed action aimed to encourage authorities to conduct targeted activities within their respective countries and collectively with each other for a week, but also to draw attention to this despicable crime. The results of these joint action days reached not only the authorities, but also many other external stakeholders who may have a part to play in reducing the number of victims of human trafficking.
Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, Deputy Executive Director of Europol, Operations Directorate, said:
Close and efficient cooperation between law enforcement and border protection authorities on an international level is key in targeting those who exploit the most vulnerable among us. The impressive results of this year's EMPACT joint action days show that the despicable crime of human trafficking is best fought together. For this, I express my gratitude to all countries and partners that once again joined forces with Europol in this global endeavour to take down these criminal networks.
Lars Gerdes, Deputy Executive Director for Operations at Frontex, said:
Human trafficking is an abhorrent crime that preys on the vulnerable and undermines our shared values of human dignity and freedom. Detecting these crimes is incredibly challenging due to the frequent absence of victim testimonies, leading to a significant number of unreported cases. This is why our international cooperation with Europol, Interpol, Austria and over 39 countries worldwide is so crucial.
Richard Chambers, INTERPOL Director, Organized and Emerging Crime, said:
Operations such as GLOBAL CHAIN demonstrate that no country or continent is immune to trafficking and exploitation. Whether committed by family members or highly-organised crime groups, the impact on victims is devastating. As a global law enforcement community, we are committed to sharing the vital intelligence needed to bring all perpetrators to justice.
276 new investigations launched
Overall results of the EMPACT joint action days:
362 suspects identified;
219 perpetrators arrested;
1 374 (1 221 adults, 153 children) victims identified and assisted;
2 074 criminal assets such as cash or devices seized;
363 fraudulent documents detected;
over 276 new investigations initiated.
In addition to the fight against child trafficking and the most-threatening criminal networks, this international law enforcement effort saw several targeted focal points against the trafficking of human beings across the world. This included actions in Latin America, Asia, Africa as well as Eastern Partnership countries and Ukraine.

Police Begin Towing 'Freedom Convoy' Vehicles at Wellington Parliament
An anti-mandate protest in New Zealand inspired by the Canadian "Freedom Convoy" swelled in numbers on Wednesday on Parliament grounds in Wellington, authorities said.
"There has been an influx of protesters at Parliament today, including children. However, the crowd had been orderly," Richard Chambers, an assistant police commissioner, said during a news conference.
"This is a very complex situation and we are mindful of the tactics we need to take so that the situation is not escalated," he added. The commissioner estimated there were about 450 vehicles blocking the site.

Give us a password clue, Boris! PM Johnson LEAKS cabinet Zoom meeting's private ID as he tweets screenshot
Self-isolating British PM Boris Johnson has been left red-faced after making his UK cabinet Zoom meeting ID public on social media, prompting some to cheekily suggest they'll join in next time if they can guess the password.
Johnson tweeted a screenshot of his Zoom meeting on Tuesday afternoon, in which ministers and key officials all appeared on a single screen via the video conferencing app to discuss the coronavirus crisis.
However, eagle-eyed observers, like Virgin Media News' Richard Chambers, noticed that Johnson had been somewhat slack in maintaining tight security protocols by failing to hide the private ID number to access the meeting. It left many on Twitter dumbfounded that the prime minister could commit such a gaffe.
Johnson, Health Secretary Matt Hancock and England's chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty are currently self-isolating after developing Covid-19 symptoms. The latest official UK figures indicate that 25,150 have tested positive for the coronavirus infection, with 1,789 resultant deaths so far.
