THEY WANT YOU DIVIDED BY RACE: NYC public school asks parents to 'reflect' on their 'whiteness'

NYC public school asks parents to 'reflect' on their 'whiteness'
Passed out a ranking list titled, "The 8 White Identities"
A city public school principal is asking parents to "reflect" on their "whiteness" - passing out literature that extols "white traitors'' who "dismantle institutions," education officials confirmed to The Post on Tuesday.
The "woke'' offensive at the East Side Community School in Manhattan features a ranking list titled "The 8 White Identities," which ranges from "White Supremacist'' to "White Abolitionist."
The curriculum, written by Barnor Hesse, an associate professor of African American studies at Northwestern University in Illinois, claims, "There is a regime of whiteness, and there are action-oriented white identities.
"People who identify with whiteness are one of these,'' Hesse writes above the eight-point list.
"It's about time we build an ethnography of whiteness, since white people have been the ones writing about and governing Others,'' Hesse adds.
In between the two extreme "identities" of supremacist and abolitionist are such categories as "White Voyeurism'' - defined as "wouldn't challenge a white supremacist, desires non-whiteness because it's interesting'' - and "White Privilege,'' or "sympathetic to a set of issues but only privately; won't speak/act in solidarity publicly because benefitting through whiteness in public (some POC are in this category as well)."
"The Eight White Identities" written by Northwestern University associate professor Barnor Hesse.
The handout was accompanied by a color-coordinated meter with the red zone on the left titled "White Supremacist'' and the green zone on the far right labeled "White Abolitionist."
A New York City Department of Education official told The Post that some parents at the school, which caters to sixth- through 12-graders on the Lower East Side, first shared the material with staff.
The principal then disseminated it to every parent "as part of a series of materials meant for reflection" and as "food for thought," the official said.
A DOE rep said in a statement, "Anti-racism and the celebration of diversity is at the core of our work on behalf of the young people of New York City, and the East Side Community School's students, parents and staff partner together to advance equity in their community.
"The document in question was shared with the school by parents as a part of ongoing anti-racist work in the school community and is one of many resources the schools utilizes."
Northwestern University associate professor Barnor Hesse presents an "ethnography of whiteness" in the ranking list.
The spokesman said school workers are now being threatened over the missive.
"Our staff are now being targeted with vile racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic slurs and degrading language from people outside of their school and nothing justifies the abuse directed at our educators," the rep said.
Christopher Rufo of the Discovery Institute wrote in a tweet that included a posting of the curriculum, "This is the new language of public education."
The dissemination of Hesse's literature to parents comes as the DOE and schools chancellor Richard Carranza have pushed to eliminate what they call current administrators' "white-supremacy culture.''
The administration has embraced "anti-bias training" across the board, with staffers forced to attend slide-show presentations denouncing the current culture's "paternalism" and "power hoarding" - while getting sued over Carranza's alleged creation of "an environment which is hostile toward whites."
Rufo's Feb. 15 tweet drew mixed reactions on Twitter.
"If you find this hostile, or unnerving, it's because you are fearing the loss of power and advantage that your skin colour has afforded you. It's an agenda to bring true equality," a Twitter user fired at Rufo over Hesse's chart.
But another writer said, "THIS is what a public school spends time and money on? Anti-racism like this is a poison."
The racial makeup of the student body at East Side Community was 55 percent Hispanic, 18 percent White, 15 percent Black, 10 percent Asian and 2 percent other during the last school year.
The school's principal, Mark Federman, declined comment through the Education Department.
Federman made headlines in 2007 when he tried to prevent the arrest of a student accused of punching a school safety agent. The principal was arrested after scuffling with another agent during the fracas but returned to school later that day.

12,000 NYC Students Banned From School For Not Consenting To Random Covid Testing
Today in "how far can your rights be infringed upon before people start to push back" news...
About 12,000 New York City students are being prevented from attending in-person learning because their parents "failed to sign consent forms for weekly random testing", Bloomberg reported last week. The students are part of a larger group of 190,000 pre-school through elementary students who returned to classrooms in December.
While about 60,000 pre-school and kindergarten students are exempt from testing, there are still about 130,000 students who are required to participate in random testing.
Nathaniel Styer, a spokesman for the city Department of Education, said:
Due to the extensive efforts of our staff, 91% of students who need a consent form have one on file. Students without consent forms, and who do not have approved exemptions, are transitioned to remote instruction.
Random testing is conducted on 20% of everyone in each school building, every week. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza are responsible for implementing the standards that went into place after NYC schools had previously shut down.
Meanwhile, high school and middle school students that are part of NYC's 1 million plus student body are all receiving remote instruction. "Tens of thousands" of elementary school parents have voluntarily opted out of the random testing in favor of remote learning as well, Bloomberg concluded.

New York City's public schools to shut down Thursday over COVID spike
Coronavirus test positivity rates surpassed the city's 3% threshold on Wednesday
close
Fox News Flash top headlines for November 18
New York City schools will shut down starting Thursday due to a spike in COVID-19 cases, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Wednesday.
De Blasio said officials opted to close schools out of an abundance of caution after coronavirus test positivity rates hit the 3% threshold.
"We must fight back the second wave," the mayor said on Twitter.
NYC principals are being told to take necessary items home with them as remote teaching will begin in the morning.
Students will shift to remote learning during the indefinite shutdown and all school buildings will remain closed until further notice, NYC Department of Education Chancellor Richard Carranza informed parents in a letter sent to them on Wednesday.
"Please note that this is a temporary closure, and school buildings will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so," the letter, obtained by Fox News, said.
"I know that for many of you, this decision to temporarily close school buildings that we recently opened up will be disappointing, and I understand," Carranza wrote. "But by confronting these challenges together, we can continue to fight back against COVID-19. And I am confident that before long, we will be able to safely reopen our school buildings again."
For days, the city has seen infection rates creeping upward, and de Blasio had previously warned closures could be imminent to keep children safe.
De Blasio said the city could be implementing "additional restrictions" in New York City that could impact other industries, he announced at a press conference on Wednesday, as he also urged more people to get tested for the virus.
The school closures come just days after parents submitted their decision opting for blended learning a mix of online coursework and in-person instruction or fully remote classes for their child.
The chancellor said students who opted for the blended option can return to in-person classes when schools reopen.

New York City School Principals Vote Unanimously to Have Mayor de Blasio Abdicate Control to the State
The police officially can't stand him and now the teachers as well.
The New York Post reports:
New York City's school-principals union demanded Sunday that Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chancellor Richard Carranza abdicate control of the system to the state - a brutal rebuke over their handling of COVID-19.
The stunning move is just the latest sign of upheaval for the city's embattled public schools amid the coronavirus - and comes only two days before the scheduled start of in-classroom learning for K-8 students.
The Council of School Supervisors and Administrators said it was taking the unprecedented step of seeking state intervention partly because there are more than 200 elementary-school principals who still need a total of 1,200 teachers before K-8 on-site instruction begins Tuesday.
And instead of trying to deal with the staffing crisis, district higher-ups have only pushed principals to lie and help them cover up the issue, the union claimed.
ABC 7 reports:
One day before NYC's phased reopening of in-person learning, the union representing over 6,400 of New York City's school leaders declared a unanimous vote of "No Confidence" for Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chancellor Richard Carranza due to their "failure to lead New York City through the safe and successful reopening of schools."

New York Education Official Arrested On Child Enticement, Pornography Charges In Wisconsin
David A. Hay (age: 39), a resident of Brooklyn, New York, was charged via a criminal complaint following his December 29, 2019, arrest by local authorities.
According to the complaint and supporting affidavit, starting in July of 2019, Hay, a former Wisconsin resident, began corresponding on a popular dating app with "Colton" whom he believed to be a 14 year-old boy living in Neenah, Wisconsin. Hay began engaging in sexually explicit conversations with "Colton" and making plans to meet up with the minor to engage in sexual activity.
The first message the cop received from Hay said, "Into daddies?" Hoffer then told Hay he was 14 and Hay replied "Yea I'm good w that."
Hay was deputy chief of staff to New York City Department of Education Chancellor Richard Carranza.
"Colton" was, in fact, a City of Neenah Police Investigator operating undercover. The complaint alleges that Hay procured a "whirlpool suite" at a Neenah area hotel for the purpose of meeting up with the child for sexual activity. Following Hay's arrest, a search of his smart phone revealed sexually explicit images of a former Tomah High School student. Hay was the principal at that school from 2011-2014. Prior to that he was an administrator at Kettle Moraine High School for several years.
Hay faces charges of using a computer to attempt to persuade, induce, or entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2422(b), and possession of child pornography, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2252A(a)(5)(B). He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and up to a lifetime of imprisonment if convicted of the enticement charge, and up to 10 years imprisonment if convicted of the child pornography possession charge.

Top DOE official arrested for trying to set up sex with underage boy
A top deputy to city schools Chancellor Richard Carranza was busted in Wisconsin for allegedly trying to arrange sex with an underage boy online, police and sources told The Post.
Department of Education deputy chief of staff David Hay was arrested at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee on Sunday on a charge of using a computer "to facilitate a child sex crime," according to cops in Neenah, Wisconsin.
He allegedly intended to meet with a minor boy for sex, sources said.
Hay, who remained behind bars pending a bail hearing Monday, had been under investigation for several months, sources said.
Under Wisconsin law, the charge Hay was booked on is defined as someone who "uses a computerized communication system to communicate with an individual who the actor believes or has reason to believe has not attained the age of 16 years with intent to have sexual contact or sexual intercourse with the individual."
The senior DOE administrator, who earns $168,000 annually, works with Carranza's office on the DOE's Equity and Excellence initiative, according to his LinkedIn page.
The Wisconsin native served as a principal in the Milwaukee area before being hired by the DOE as special assistant to the chancellor in May 2016 under then-Chancellor Carmen Fariña.
Carranza promoted him to serve as his deputy chief of staff in October 2018.
The Brooklyn resident now "leads a comprehensive organizational effectiveness and change management strategy for the New York City Department of Education," according to his LinkedIn account. "He works with the Senior Leadership team to align the department's work to the Chancellor's vision of Equity and Excellence for All."
He received his doctorate in education from Harvard University in 2017.
Hay was immediately fired after the arrest, a DOE spokesperson said Monday.
"These allegations are incredibly disturbing and absolutely unacceptable," said Miranda Barbot. "We took immediate action removing Mr. Hay from payroll and are terminating him. We referred this to the Special Commissioner of Investigation and we will fully comply with any investigation."
Barbot stressed that Hay did not work directly with children during his nearly four years with the DOE.
A Winnebago County District Attorney's Office staffer said Hay would likely have to wait until Thursday to see a judge because of the nature of his case and the New Year holiday.
"This is an ongoing investigation," police said Monday.

SF schools chief Richard Carranza leaving for Houston job July 28, 2016
With classes set to start in less than three weeks, San Francisco school officials suddenly find themselves looking for a new leader. Superintendent Richard Carranza took the city by surprise, announcing plans Wednesday to leave the district within the next month to take the top job in Houston. He spoke soon after Houston's public school board unanimously chose him as the sole finalist for the job. By law, the board must now wait 21 days before taking a final vote on the hire. But barring unforeseen circumstances, "I'm planning on moving to Houston," Carranza told The Chronicle.
The San Francisco school board, which has been closely watching the developments in Texas, has already selected an interim superintendent from the district's top ranks. Myong Leigh, deputy superintendent for policy and operations, will lead the district during a search for a permanent replacement.
Carranza, 49, has been San Francisco's superintendent for four years and has worked in the district for nearly eight. Prior to that, he held leadership roles in the Tucson and Las Vegas school districts. His time in San Francisco has largely been free of controversy. During his tenure, city schools have focused on reducing suspensions and providing extra resources in communities with more disadvantaged students. The board adopted an ethnic studies program in high schools as well as courses and curriculum dedicated to LGBT issues. Carranza led those efforts while also remaining committed to San Francisco's sanctuary city policies, which protect immigrants in the community and the schools from potential consequences related to their legal status, Haney said. "I hope to hear about Houston dramatically reducing school suspensions, introducing LGBT studies and becoming a sanctuary school district," Haney said. '''"For us, these are our values, this is what has been important in San Francisco, and Richard has reflected that
Change of heart Carranza, with a blue-collar background and fluency in Spanish, has been a sought-after superintendent nationally. In January, he was among the finalists for the job in Los Angeles before withdrawing from the selection process. At the time, he said there was still work to do in San Francisco, including overseeing changes to the student assignment process. But Carranza apparently had a change of heart when Houston called. "There are many similarities on a bigger scale to San Francisco," he said. "I am from the Southwest, there's that way of life that feels homey to me." The Houston school district is about four times the size of San Francisco's district, and is also focused on bettering language programs and increasing opportunity for disadvantaged students. Carranza said, like the song, he will leave his heart in San Francisco and miss the school community. "The honest truth is, there is never a good time to make a transition," he said. "But SFUSD is on really solid ground. You can point in every direction and see solid structures and systems and strategies in place to ensure kids are being taken care of in the city."

5 things to know about Richard Carranza
Meet de Blasio's new New York City schools chancellor March 5, 2018
Richard A. Carranza was announced as New York City's new schools chancellor in a low-drama announcement at City Hall on Monday afternoon. Here's what you need to know about the new leader of the country's largest public school system. The majority of New York City's 1.1 million public school students are racial minorities, and 40 percent of them are Hispanic. Following in the footsteps of outgoing Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña and the mayor's initial pick of Alberto Carvalho, de Blasio has made it quite clear that he prefers to have a Spanish-speaking superintendent. Carranza was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, the grandson of Mexican immigrants. Carranza spoke Spanish at home with his sheet-metal worker father and his hairdresser mother. He learned to speak English in school, before going on to college at the University of Arizona.
History in Houston Carranza's previous job was school superintendent in Houston, Texas, the eighth-largest school district in the country. He joined a year and a half ago, in August 2016, after leading San Francisco's schools for four years. Carranza faced serious challenges in Houston - chief among them, Hurricane Harvey, which damaged much of the city last summer and is expected to cause serious budget issues in coming years. Carranza earned a $345,000 salary in Houston, the same that he'll make in New York, according to de Blasio. This is more than $100,000 more than Fariña's salary, though she made well above $400,000 if you factor in her pension.
He showed up in person De Blasio's first pick for chancellor, Alberto Carvalho, never made it to New York City to announce he was taking the job and instead said on live television that he would stay in Miami. De Blasio wasn't going to let that happen again, and Carranza came in person to City Hall on Monday for the press conference after a weekend-long interview with de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray, who seems to be taking an increasingly large role in staffing choices within the de Blasio administration. De Blasio said that Carranza was his second pick, and that he called Carranza the same day that Carvalho declined the job. Carranza is a bit of a surprise choice, though. He had been in Houston for less than two years, and was not seen as a leading contender for the job.

'''Leave Every Child Behind
In de Blasio's world, excellence deserves punishment. New York City's School Diversity Advisory Group brims with handpicked comrades of Mayor Bill de Blasio and his schools chancellor, Richard Carranza. New York City's School Diversity Advisory Group brims with handpicked comrades of Mayor Bill de Blasio and his schools chancellor, Richard Carranza. This race-obsessed panel recently demanded the elimination of all Gifted & Talented programs in Gotham's government schools. The SDAG proposes to sacrifice NYC's high-achieving children on the altar of "equity and inclusion." This cadre of bean-counters sees advanced students actually learning and immediately invokes the Deep South. An SDAG report last month called New York's merit-based G&T campuses "as segregated as the schools of Mississippi and Alabama." Perhaps deliberately, this provocative comparison conjures emotional memories of Birmingham's Jim Crow-era commissioner of public safety, Bull Connor, a Democrat, aiming fire hoses at black kids.
Gotham's parents reacted fiercely to SDAG's rotten advice. Left-wing politicians and commentators who normally applaud most any liberal scheme balked at SDAG's War on Gifted Children. This brainstorm was too much even for United Federation of Teachers president Michael Mulgrew, who seems to favor any plan to destroy educational opportunity. "Every community has children who could thrive in a gifted and talented program, and it is our responsibility to help our children reach their full potential," he stated. "We do not support the elimination of the city's gifted and talented programs." Former state assemblyman Michael Benjamin, a Democrat representing the Bronx, wrote in the New York Post, "Team Carranza doesn't simply want to level the playing field; they want to dig it up and salt it." Benjamin and his brothers are G&T alumni from the Bronx. He recalled his G&T times as "the finest years of my young school life. I felt as though I finally belonged. I didn't have to hold back, and I had to run to keep up academically." He added that the best way to help black and Latino children attend the best high schools "shouldn't be to dig out the pipeline, but to restore it."
New York City Council member Robert Cornegy, a Democrat representing Bedford-Stuyvesant, dismissed SDAG's scheme in a New York Post op-ed headlined "How Gifted and Talented Programs Boost Minorities." "Excellence in education means providing each student the opportunity to achieve," Cornegy wrote. He then turned the tables on SDAG's racemongers: "Rather than seeing these programs as an impediment to diversity in our schools, I see these programs as a catalyst for helping children from black and brown communities get into specialized high schools."

DeBlasio & Carranza $773 Million "Failure"
A hailed part of Bill de Blasio's agenda will meet its demise.
Last week, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza announced that the much-heralded Renewal Schools program was coming to an end. After five years and $773 million spent on almost 100 public schools, the city concluded there was barely any improvement in grades and test performance.
During a recent news conference, de Blasio said that despite it ending, the program still had some merit.
"Well, first of all, 45,000 students benefited from the Renewal initiative," said de Blasio to reporters. "I want to make this very clear, because I think, I think some of what has been written about it misses the fact that over four years the money that was spent was helping students in real time to have better outcomes. So, 45,000 students-what did the money go to? It went to 100 percent fair student funding in all of those 94 schools; it went to community school initiatives at all 94.
"It went to summer programs, tutoring programs, mental health clinics that were available to kids in those schools, all sorts of things that we would like to see in more and more schools, and a lot of kids benefited, which is why you see across all 94 schools in total a lot of progress that was achieved in terms of increased graduation rates, better test scores, better attendance," continued de Blasio.
Mr. de Blasio said the reorganization of the Department of Education's behemoth bureaucracy, undertaken last year by his schools chancellor, Richard A. Carranza, would help smooth out the confusing lines of authority that led to frustration among principals and teachers in Renewal schools.
Though only about 25 percent of the schools in the program have improved enough to require less investment and support on the four-year timeline Mr. de Blasio established, the mayor insisted that Renewal still achieved its "core mission."

$90 million lawsuit: 'Toxic' whiteness purge at NYC education department sees 'totalitarian threat,' longtime execs demoted
A $90 million lawsuit claims the chancellor of the New York City Department of Education embarked on a mission to purge "toxic" whiteness from the city schools, which saw Richard Carranza issue a "totalitarian threat" against employees after he took over last year and the demotion of longtime executives in favor of less-qualified persons of color, the New York Post reported.
"On June 27, 2018, Carranza addressed the restructuring of his administration … announcing to all DOE employees … that 'if you draw a paycheck from DOE,' you will either 'Get on board with [my] equity platform or leave,' a totalitarian threat to his employees' salaries and financial future that Carranza used to silence Caucasian DOE employees impacted by his discriminatory actions for no reason other than their race," read the suit filed Tuesday in New York State Supreme Court.
The suit's plaintiffs are a trio of white executives - Lois Hererra, Jaye Murray, and Laura Feijoo - who were demoted after Carranza took over.
"Under Carranza's leadership, DOE has swiftly and irrevocably silenced, sidelined and punished plaintiffs and other Caucasian female DOE employees on the basis of their race, gender and unwillingness to accept their other colleagues' hateful stereotypes about them," the group's lawyer, Davida S. Perry, wrote in the filing, the Post said.
Lois Hererra
Herrera, who started at the DOE in 1986 as a guidance counselor and worked her way up to lead its Office of Safety and Youth Development, claims in the suit that she witnessed huge changes almost immediately after Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed Carranza in April 2018, the paper said.
One such instance involved executive LaShawn Robinson, who is black, the Post reported. Here's what the suit said:
Herrera learned from another senior administrator that Robinson expressed a discriminatory bias against her Caucasian colleagues on a number of occasions leading up to her promotion as Deputy Chancellor, including on or about May 4, 2018, while presenting at the "Border Crossers" training in her former role as Executive Director of the Office of Equity and Access, telling Caucasian colleagues that they "had to take a step back and yield to colleagues of Color" and "recognize that values of White culture are supremacist," as well as saying "We have all taken on Whiteness," while referring to being exposed to a society that has become toxic with Whiteness.

"Three white female executives in the New York Education Department were demoted in favor of less-qualified people of color, a $90million suit launched by the women claims.
The longtime officials say they were unfairly targeted as part of the department's crusade against 'toxic whiteness' through its controversial racial equity plan.
Lois Herrera started at the DOE in 1986 as a guidance counselor and worked her way up to lead its Office of Safety and Youth Development.
In the suit filed Tuesday, she claims she saw the culture shift when Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed Richard Carranza as the chancellor of NYC's public schools in April 2018."

Even at this early stage, Trump looks stronger than ever and Dems are mad with frustration.
Many are furious with Barr, with some hysterics saying they want to remove him from office, as if somebody must be impeached. CNN, NBC and others are accusing Barr of doing Trump's "dirty work" by daring to use the "spy" word, as if straight talk is too much for their tender sensibilities.
They are so in the tank against Trump that they denounce the search for truth because the truth might favor the president.
Those with the most skin in the game are the most at risk, starting with Jim "The Snake" Comey. The former FBI director, whose conduct makes J. Edgar Hoover look like a choirboy, claims he is confused, saying "I have no idea" what Barr is talking about.
James Clapper and John Brennan, the intelligence chiefs under Obama who came out of the closet as naked partisans, added their two cents of shock. "Stunning and scary," Clapper said of Barr's plans, and Brennan accused Barr of sounding like a "personal lawyer" for Trump.
Translation: we better lawyer up.
Meanwhile, Mueller, the would-be savior, is now a nobody, an afterthought in the Dems' river of rage.

Benjamin Netanyahu's rival party concedes Israeli election
Other recent developments also favored Trump. The economy continues to roar and the crisis on the border that Dems said didn't exist clearly does, with illegal crossers numbering more than 100,000 a month - and those are just the ones apprehended.
Trump is at least searching for solutions while Dems have closed their eyes and ears to a security and humanitarian nightmare, as if it is just an inconvenient distraction.
Trump was also a winner in the Israeli election, with his support of Bibi Netanyahu helping to lift the prime minister to victory.
While there is personal satisfaction for both men, the greater truth is that stability in Israeli politics removes any Palestinian fantasy that a dovish new prime minister would return to the lifeless land-for-peace formula. Arabs - and Iran - can either deal with Trump and Netanyahu, or waste more time and lives weaving their dream palaces.
Democrats, in reaction to the Trump-Netanyahu alliance, continued to move away from Israel. All the 2020 candidates skipped the AIPAC conference and Beto O'Rourke called Netanyahu a "racist."
Finally, Rep. Ilhan Omar is proving to be a one-woman wrecking crew for the party as well as for the image of all American Muslims. On top of her anti-Semitism, Omar's dismissive description of 9/11 as "some people did something" marks her as a heartless ingrate to the nation that rescued her family from civil war and possibly death at the hands of other Muslims.

Dan Crenshaw blasts Ilhan Omar's 'unbelievable' description of 9/11 attacks
The only question is whether party leaders will have the courage to stand up against her. Sen. Chuck Schumer and Speaker Nancy Pelosi are usually camera hogs, but ducked questions about Omar's 9/11 reference and her claim that criticisms of her are anti-Muslim.
They did, however, find time to criticize Barr's plan to investigate the investigators, thus proving again that Democrats have the leaders they deserve.
Taking Idiot at his word
The scores of sordid criminal charges against Michael Avenatti wouldn't be news if the media hadn't turned him into a weapon against Trump. He appeared on CNN and MSNBC nearly 200 times to push his Stormy Daniels case - and to launch his presidential hopes.
Did anybody at those networks vet the guy? Did they ask former clients if he was honest?
Of course not. He was their useful idiot until he was no longer useful.
Warning 'label'
Reader Evilio Herrera is fed up with Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, writing: "I'm tired of his 'racist' labeling. The man obviously has a complex. As a Latino American myself, the race card game has gotten old."
'Bandwagon' stuck in park
A headline in The New Yorker says Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's 2020 campaign has "stalled."
Wrong. She hasn't stalled. She was never moving.

New York's War on Religious Education
New York State has opened to the door to a war on religious education. New guidelines from the state's Department of Education are framed as applying to all "religious and independent schools" in New York, but no one is fooled. The changes are aimed right at New York City's freewheeling Orthodox Jewish seminaries, known as yeshivas. More than 100,000 students attend yeshivas in New York City.
The new guidelines revisit the "substantial equivalency" statute that has kept the peace in New York schools since 1897. Non-public schools can educate their students as they see fit, provided the education is "substantially equivalent" to public schools. The new guidelines change the equation. Math must be taught every day. English, science, and social studies must be taught. Schools must provide samples of teaching schedules, textbooks, and lesson plans. Non-compliant schools risk withdrawal of funding for things like textbooks and transportation, and students ultimately could be forced to go to another school. Students that resist transfer risk being declared "truant" and legal steps to challenge parental competency could follow. The new mandates will be enforced by inspections from local school district officials.
The guidelines, wrote two Orthodox educators in the Wall Street Journal, are a shocking power grab by secular forces. They "empower local school boards to evaluate private schools and to vote on our right to continue educating our students." The new curriculum requirements demand "so much time that it crowds out Torah study, our sacred mission."
The controversy began when dissident former yeshiva students started raising concerns about the quality of their education. Members of the Orthodox community concede that some yeshivas need improvement. But when you've been in business for 1,500 years, give or take a few centuries, change comes slow. And as history as shown, it's a very bad idea to tell a Jew how to run his religion.
New Yorkers of all stripes were quick to recognize the threat to religious freedom. Ed Mechmann, director of public policy at the Catholic Archdiocese of New York, wrote that the new regulations would "give local school boards virtually unlimited power over private religious schools. There is no protection against government officials who are hostile to religious schools or who just want to eliminate the competition."
A majority of the New York City Council - not a group known for its theological fervor - complained in a letter to the state Education Department about the "unprecedented incursion into private schools' curricula" and warned it to refrain "from threatening to remove student-based funding from schools that do not acquiesce to these guidelines."
In New York City, the Orthodox community is a powerful political force, often delivering critical votes in closely fought elections. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio opened a probe in 2015 following complaints about sub-standard education from the yeshiva dissidents. But the investigation went nowhere. De Blasio's own investigations commissioner, Mark Peters, looked into the controversy, only to be fired later by the mayor.
The new guidelines put the mayor back in the yeshiva hot seat and could revive the dormant investigation. They seem sure to ignite more controversy. School inspections are slated to begin in February. The yeshiva establishment says they won't cooperate with inspectors, ditto from New York's Catholic school leadership. That's going to be a big problem.
New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza told the New York Times he's starting the inspections with yeshivas that have barred city officials or have been noted in complaints about poor education standards. Carranza said the de Blasio administration intends to "move aggressively and get this taken care of."
Don't bet on it.

The American Left Has Now Fully Embraced Racism
1/2
For decades, the American left has helped spread various insidious forms of Marxism. Now, it's openly embracing abject racism.
David MarcusBy David Marcus
DECEMBER 19, 2020
A Rubicon has been crossed in American political discourse. Long purveyors of Marxism, the nation's leftists have now come to fully embrace something else; racism. Just in the last week in the areas of medicine, education, and journalism, well-intentioned institutional racists have insisted - as is increasingly their habit - that skin color is and must be the defining element of our public policies.
There is no issue more important to the future and soul of our nation right now than the leftist bigotry threatening the very concept of what it means to be an American.
On the medical side, Dr. Harald Schmidt, a supposed expert on ethics and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania, told the New York Times that essential workers, not the elderly, should be the first to receive COVID-19 vaccines. His reason? "Older populations are whiter," he told the publication. "Society is structured in a way that enables them to live longer. Instead of giving additional health benefits to those who already had more of them, we can start to level the playing field a bit."To be clear, the term "level the playing field" here means allowing people to die because of the color of their skin.
What's amazing about this is that just months ago to even question the efficacy of lockdowns meant to stop the spread of COVID-19 was met with accusations that one was killing grandma. Now, it doesn't matter because grandma is probably white.
Nothing, it seems, is more important than protecting the lives of the oldest among us, except for fighting racism. The great irony of course is that the lockdowns themselves have disproportionately destroyed minority-owned businesses. Yet, for the Marxists on the radical left, this doesn't matter. They don't fight racism by giving people tools to lift themselves up, they purport to do it by making people dependent on the state.
Next, in outrageous racism infecting our educational system, this week, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio announced sweeping changes to the way in the city's top public schools consider applicants in an attempt to diversify, or as some unhinged proponents of his plan put it, "desegregate" these schools. Essentially, admissions will focus less on grades and more on skin color.
The dirty little secret of his proposal is that it is Asian students, not white students, who dominate admissions to these schools and who will bear the brunt of de Blasio's abject racism.
There is also a further deeply condescending and racist aspect of this approach. It simply accepts that there is nothing we can do to help black and brown students achieve except put our thumb on the scale. De Blasio and his racist allies like School Chancellor Richard Carranza would argue that systems of white supremacy are responsible for the achievement gaps, but if so, how do they explain the success of Asian students, and why are they being punished?
