I'm the boss! Trump politely puts sudden media sensation Stephen Miller back in line
There's only one person running immigration policy in this administration, and it's not Stephen Miller, said President Trump Wednesday as he left for a rally in Texas. "You know who that is? It's me," he said, in case anyone was not clear.
In recent days, Trump's senior aide has been named repeatedly as the mastermind behind a tougher stance on migrants trying to cross the southern border and as the architect of an overhaul of senior personnel at the Department of Homeland Security. Kirstjen Nielsen was ousted as head of the department on Sunday, prompting a round of briefings that Miller - who co-wrote Trump's "American carnage" inauguration speech - had long been gunning for her. It came days after Trump wrongfooted Homeland Security officials by withdrawing his nomination of Ron Vitiello to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement, again reportedly at the urging of Miller.
Randolph Alles, the Secret Service director, and Claire Grady, the acting Homeland Security deputy secretary, have also both left, with reports of more departures to come. The result was a burgeoning narrative of a hidden puppetmaster leading a clean-out ahead of a major tightening of immigration policy. "Stephen is an excellent guy. He is a wonderful person. People don't know him," said Trump when he was asked about his aide by reporters at the White House before going on to deliver a very public slap-down. "He has been with me from the beginning. He is a brilliant man … and frankly, there is only one person that is running it." He pointed to his own head, in case anyone missed the point.
It is not the first time an adviser has been cut down to size after generating too many headlines. Former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, the other author of the inauguration speech, drew Trump's ire in 2017 after a string of stories about his genius for political strategy that included in a Time front cover headlined "The Great Manipulator."
In recent months Miller, who served as communications director for then-Sen. Jeff Sessions before joining the Trump campaign, has been seen as the new Trump whisperer. Sam Nunberg, an early hire by the Trump 2016 campaign, said it was a mistake to ever take too much credit for policy or personnel decisions. He added that briefings emphasizing Miller's role in the Homeland Security shake-up may be designed to undermine his position. "Miller is going to have to be careful and not take too much credit," he said. "People saying that this was Miller, instead of that this was Trump's decision, is a way to get Miller back."

Former Trump official: Nielsen was 'obstructionist' who wouldn't fire 'deep state' employees in DHS
Outgoing Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen triggered her own demise by refusing to fire a pair of agency officials that were slow-walking President Trump's immigration agenda, says a former administration official who worked with all three people. "I think she was an obstructionist to getting rid of the bad people," the official, who asked to speak on background in order to speak openly, said in a phone call with the Washington Examiner Tuesday. The official specially mentioned the department's General Counsel John Mitnick and Citizenship and Immigration Services Director L. Francis Cissna - both of whom have been reported to be next on Trump's chopping block. Their departures would follow what's already been nearly a week of upheaval at DHS. In addition to getting rid of Nielsen, Trump rescinded the nomination of acting ICE Director Ronald Vitiello and terminated Secret Service Director Randolph Alles from his position.
Mitnick and Cissna are under scrutiny for not aggressively pursuing Trump's approach to stopping illegal immigration along the U.S.-Mexico border. Both are holdovers from the DHS of John Kelly, who headed the department for the Trump administration's first six months or so, before becoming the president's chief of staff. "When Kelly left, they never took the bad people with them. Everyone makes bad hiring decisions, [but] you don't leave them on." The former official named Mitnick as the "reason why most of the immigration policies from DHS never came to fruition." Mitnick, in particular, is getting blame from Trump allies for details implementing a 2015 court ruling mandating that children who arrive at the border with parents cannot be held more than 20 days in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.
A DHS official slammed the allegations. "Outside voices criticizing the department's general counsel for working to assiduously to follow the law while implementing the president's security first agenda likely know little about the law, and less about homeland security," the official said. Trump administration officials contend the court ruling is the reason why record-high numbers of Central American families have traveled to and illegally entered the country at the U.S.-Mexico border. That's because DHS lacks the space and legal ability to hold people for the duration of their asylum hearings.
The official said Mitnick's office is sorting through comments and making small changes to the language, but that it should not take two years to do. "John Mitnick got really good at letting this career and bureaucracy overwhelm him. You need someone that's going to be a fierce defender of what we're doing in the Trump administration, not someone who's gong to let the deep state run everything," the official said.
Cissna, meanwhile, likely hurt his own cause by having his office issue permits for those who illegally entered the U.S. to obtain work documents while they await asylum decisions, 90 percent of which are denied. "He's part of the reason we have a flood at the border," the official added.
But the DHS official broke with the rogue official again. "Director Cissna has restored USCIS' focus on national security, economic prosperity, and protecting U.S. workers. He has taken numerous steps to end illegal or inappropriate benefit programs and brought integrity to the immigration application process. He has wide support from conservatives on the Hill and in the homeland security community," the DHS official said. USCIS referred the Washington Examiner to a March list that cites 10 examples of how the agency is "improving the integrity" of the immigration system. The agency's list touted ways it says it has enhanced fraud detection among visa applicants and transparency among employment-based visa applicants."

Secret Service Director Will Be Moved To New Role At DHS
After pushing out Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and dropping Ronald Vitiello, his nominee to lead ICE, President Trump is reportedly throwing a bone to critics who are wondering who is left to run DHS.
According to Bloomberg, Secret Service Director Randolph Alles will be reassigned to another job within the agency, possibly a senior position within ICE, where he previously worked.
Alles confirmed on Monday that he would be leaving his position following reports that he had been fired by Trump amid an ongoing purge of DHS. Trump aide Stephen Miller, a well-known immigration hardliner, has reportedly been tasked with running the administration's immigration policy and is working to consolidate his control over the department.
Senator Mitt Romney said at a hearing of the Homeland Security Committee on Tuesday that he's "deeply troubled" by the vacuum at the top of DHS.
"It is dangerous," Romney said. "Dangerous given what's happening at the border, dangerous given the broad responsibilities the Department of Homeland Security has for protecting our nation. It is seriously troubling."
Alles said he had been alerted by the White House that he would be asked to step down weeks before the news broke. According to BBG, Trump likes Alles - who is a veteran Marine like former Chief of Staff and DHS Secretary Gen. John Kelly - and wants to find another role for him within the administration.

Border Patrol Official Drops Shocking Statistic On Nationalities Of Illegals Crossing Border
At least if you listen to Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodolfo Karisch, who is, after all, a bit of an expert.
At a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing on Tuesday, Karisch dropped a ton of data and statistics, but none was more eye-popping than this.
Karisch said that in his sector alone, border agents have captured people trying to enter the country illegally from more than 50 different countries, including Turkey, China, Bangladesh, Egypt and Romania. "People are traveling across hemispheres to attempt to illegally enter the U.S., using the same pathways as the Central Americans," he told lawmakers.
While Democrats claim President Trump is making up a fake crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border - and some presidential candidates, like former Texas Rep. Robert "Beto" O'Roarke, want to do away with all border barriers - Karisch said the influx of illegals is reaching epic proportions.
"Much media attention has focused on caravans coming across from Central America," Karisch said. "But the fact is that RGV is receiving caravan-equivalent numbers every seven days."
"Karisch noted that Border Patrol has apprehended more families illegally crossing the border in the first five months of fiscal 2019 than during all of fiscal 2018," Fox News reported. "Customs and Border Protection (CBP) apprehended more than 76,000 migrants across the border in February and said it was on track to apprehend more than 100,000 in March. In the Rio Grande Valley alone, Karisch said that at current pace, they would have more than 260,000 apprehensions in his sector by the end of fiscal 2019. There were 162,000 in RGV last year. He also said that his agents apprehend, on average, 1,000 people a day."
1,000 a day.
While partisan politicians who know nothing about the border claim Trump is playing politics, those in the know are repeatedly sounding the alarm that things are getting dire there. Last week, former Border Patrol Chief Mark Morgan, who served in the post during former president Barack Obama's time in the White House, told lawmakers that the crisis is "at a magnitude never seen in modern times" as he urged them to end the U.S.'s "open border policy."
"We're experiencing a crisis at the southern border at a magnitude never seen in modern times, it's unprecedented," Morgan told the Senate Homeland Security Committee.
Trump in February declared a national emergency and has threatened to shut down the entire U.S.-Mexico border. "If we don't make a deal with Congress...or if Mexico doesn't do what they should be doing...then we're going to close the border, that's going to be it, or we're going to close large sections of the border, maybe not all of it," he said in the Oval Office last week. He later gave Mexico a reprieve, saying officials there will have one year to shape up.
The president has been purging Homeland Security officials in an effort to get "tougher." Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned Sunday (some say she was ousted) and Secret Service Director Randolph Alles was booted out on Monday. On Friday, the White House pulled its nominee for director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Ronald Vitiello, with Trump again saying he wanted to go in a "tougher direction."
More heads are expected to roll soon, news agencies report.

Schumer: Secret Service director must testify about Mar-A-Lago vulnerabilities
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Monday called on outgoing Secret Service Director Randolph Alles to testify about potential security vulnerabilities at Mar-A-Lago after a Chinese woman was arrested trying to enter the property with malware.
"The outgoing Secret Service director must testify before Congress as soon as possible about the potential security vulnerabilities at Mar-a-Lago involving a Chinese national arrested with malware, and other counterintelligence and national security threats," Schumer said in a statement.
"The public and Congress need to know the extent to which adversarial governments - like China - and their agents are attempting to gain access to, or conduct electronic surveillance on, conversations or other information regarding national security at President Trump's properties," he added.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said earlier Monday that President Trump is removing Alles from his position as director of the Secret Service, adding that he will be "leaving shortly." His successor, James Murray, is expected to take over the position starting in May.
Schumer's statement comes after Yujing Zhang, a Chinese national, was arrested as she tried to enter Mar-A-Lago's pool. Federal prosecutors alleged in a filing last week that she entered the club with a thumb drive containing malicious software and multiple passports.
Federal prosecutors added at a hearing in Florida on Monday that she also had multiple USB drives, thousands of dollars in cash, a second cellphone and five SIM cards.
The Miami Herald reported that federal authorities are probing possible Chinese spying targeting Mar-a-Lago, Trump's private club in Palm Beach, Fla., including looking into Zhang.
But Trump downplayed concerns about security on the propriety last week, saying they had "very good control."

The four top Democrats from the House and Senate Intelligence and Judiciary committees have called on the FBI to open both criminal and counterintelligence investigations into Li "Cindy" Yang, the founder of a chain of massage parlors in Florida. Yang also reportedly ran a business that claimed to sell access to President Trump and his associates.
The Miami Herald and Mother Jones magazine have both reported that Yang created a business called "GY US Investments" whose website, since taken down, offered clients "the opportunity to interact with the President, the [American] Minister of Commerce and other political figures." The company said it could arrange photo ops with the president and arrange "White House and Capitol Hill" dinners.
"If true, these allegations raise serious counterintelligence concerns," the lawmakers wrote in a letter, obtained by CBS News, that was sent to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, and Director of the U.S. Secret Service Randolph Alles last Friday. "China has frequently used non-traditional intelligence collectors and businesspersons to compromise targets."
At the annual Worldwide Threats hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee in January, Wray called the counterintelligence threat from China "more deep, more diverse, more vexing, more challenging, more comprehensive and more concerning than any counterintelligence threat that I can think of."
Yang was previously the owner of the Orchids of Asia Day Spa, a massage parlor in Jupiter, Florida, where Patriots owner Bob Kraft allegedly solicited prostitution and which was one of several parlors suspected of involvement in human trafficking. Kraft has denied the allegation, and Yang was not charged or implicated in that matter. She denied breaking the law in an interview with the Herald.
In their letter, the lawmakers asked the FBI to "conduct criminal and counterintelligence investigations into credible allegations of potential human trafficking, as well as unlawful foreign lobbying, campaign finance and other activities by Ms. Yang."
"[A]lthough Ms. Yang's activities may only be those of an unscrupulous actor allegedly selling access to politicians for profit," the lawmakers wrote, "her activities also could permit adversary governments or their agents access to these same politicians to acquire potential material for blackmail or other even more nefarious purposes."
They also asked whether any law enforcement or intelligence community officials were "aware" of Yang's activities prior to public press reports, and requested that the FBI provide "an assessment of any counterintelligence risks or related concerns associated with any interactions between President Donald Trump and Ms. Yang" by Thursday, March 21.
The letter was signed by Sens. Mark Warner and Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrats on the Senate Intelligence and Judiciary committees, respectively, as well as Reps. Adam Schiff and Jerrold Nadler, the two chairmen of the House Intelligence and Judiciary committees.
