Kosovo 'crossed the Rubicon' - Serbia
Prime Minister Albin Kurti's latest crackdown threatens open war, Belgrade has said
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic accused the ethnic Albanian government in Pristina of trying to provoke a war on Wednesday, after the breakaway province closed the border to all Serbian vehicles and arrested several prominent Serbs.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti ordered the closure of the border after three Kosovo police officers were detained by Serbian security forces on Tuesday morning. He has said that the blockade will remain in effect until the three men are released.
Kurti claimed the trio was "abducted" inside Kosovo in "open acts of international aggression" by Serbia. Vucic has said they were on the other side of the line of control and that he had proof.
"They were arrested 1.8 kilometers from the administrative line," Vucic told the state broadcaster RTS on Wednesday evening. "That's pretty far from the place where they left their car. Kurti says they were 300 meters from the line. What were they doing 300 meters from the line, without telling KFOR?" he added, referring to the NATO peacekeeping mission.
The blockade is an attempt to starve the Serbs in the north of Kosovo and force them out of their homes, Vucic argued.
Kurti "wants to start a war at all costs," the Serbian president added. "The Rubicon has been crossed and it will be hard to get back to normal."
Vucic also objected to Tuesday's arrests of two prominent Serbs, whom the ethnic Albanian government accused of organizing the "attack" on NATO peacekeepers last month. He claimed that the EU and NATO gave him guarantees there would be no arrests, but did nothing to stop Kurti.
EU foreign policy commissioner Josep Borrell sent a letter to Kurti on Wednesday urging him to "de-escalate" the situation. In what amounted to unusually strong language from Brussels, Borrell wrote that Pristina needs to "take the opinions of EULEX and KFOR fully into account and treat them as partners, which also means coordinating with them in advance," which was not the case on Tuesday. EULEX is the European bloc's civilian mission tasked with monitoring Kosovo.
"As 27 EU Member States have made it very clear, failure to de-escalate will result in negative consequences," Borrell warned.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has already canceled the meeting with Kurti scheduled for Wednesday, saying it could not be held due to the "hourly worsening of Kosovo's relations with the entire Euro-Atlantic community."
Kurti's crackdown has gone beyond just the Serbs, however. His government has also revoked the license of the privately owned TV outlet 'Klan Kosova', which the head of the Association of Journalists of Kosovo described as "an unprecedented act aimed against media freedoms."
Ramush Haradinaj, a former commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and leader of the AAK opposition party, was quoted by local media on Wednesday as saying that Kurti was "threatening Kosovo's alliance with the US and NATO" and called for a no-confidence vote against the PM.
NATO deployed troops in Kosovo in 1999, after a 78-day bombing campaign against Serbia. Belgrade has refused to recognize Pristina's 2008 declaration of independence.

Serbia Calls for Ensuring Safety of Witnesses in Ex-Kosovo President's Case, Dacic Says
Serbian parliament speaker Ivica Dacic on Friday urged the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor's Office to guarantee the safety of witnesses in the war crime case against the ex-president of the self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, and his associates.
Thaci resigned on Thursday after a war crime indictment against him was confirmed. A key figure in the ethnic-Albanian separatist Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), Thaci was later arrested and transported to the Hague, along with ex-Kosovo parliament speakers Kadri Veseli and Jakup Krasniqi, as well as former field commander and lawmaker Rexhep Selimi on charges of murder, torture, forced disappearance and other crimes committed during the late 1990s.
"It is important to ensure the protection of witnesses, so that it does not happen, as in the case with [former Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush] Haradinaj, when all the witnesses simply disappeared, so in the end, he was released by a Hague court decision due to the lack of witnesses," Dacic told reporters in parliament.
According to the politician, crimes against Serbs have still not yet been investigated in Kosovo.
"Just as we agree with the investigation and condemnation of war crimes in general, including in relation to the Albanians, we believe that this is the implementation of justice for the victims of the KLA," the former Serbian foreign minister added.
The KLA was an ethnic-Albanian separatist militia that fought to achieve Kosovo's independence from then-Yugoslavia during the 1998-1999 war.
In February 2008, Kosovo unilaterally proclaimed independence from Serbia. Serbia and numerous members of the international community, including China, Russia, and Spain, have not yet recognized Kosovo's independence.

Kosovo Prime Minister steps down
The Prime minister of Kosovo, Ramush Haradinaj resigned on Friday after a war crimes court in The Hague summoned him for questioning.
The serving president, Vucic, called his actions a "political trick" and a stunt to rally popular support. He said that it would fuel ethnic tensions and stall efforts to normalise the relationship between the former war foes.
Haradinaj told reporters "I received a call by the special court as a suspect and was offered to go as the prime minister or as an ordinary citizen of Kosovo. I chose the latter".
It is not the first time that Haradinaj has been suspected of war crimes. In similar event to Friday's resignation, Haradinaj had served as Prime Minister for only 100 days in 2005 before being indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal of the former Yugoslavia. He was acquitted of this in 2008 and again in 2012 due to lack of convincing evidence.

OCCUPIED PRISTINA, Serbia - In a major confession revealed on Friday April 5th, Kosovo's Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj said his government's policies serve US interests against Serbia and Russia, and he is only following Washington's orders.
"The Albanian people in all our lands are part of what America is leading. Throughout the global plan, we are together," Haradinaj told the Albanian-language Gazeta Blic last Friday.
"I am a soldier of America on the ground. I only carry out the orders," the premier said.
Haradinaj was a commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) terrorist organization during the 1998-1999 conflict, struggling to separate the Serbian province to make it an independent Albanian state.
In June 1999, after a 78-day NATO air war, Serbia allowed for UN peacekeeping forces to enter - which in practice meant NATO took Kosovo and handed it over to the KLA.
"He's telling the truth," said Paris-based political analyst Nikola Mirkovic, adding that Haradinaj is openly saying what he has been over the past 20 years since the US and NATO trained, armed and funded the KLA.
"Kosovo is clearly an American protectorate today, and Haradinaj is just telling the truth, he's just an American soldier," the analyst told RT.
Mirkovic argued that Kosovo's independence - declared in February 2008 but recognized only by the US and its allies - was an illusion. In disputes among ethnic Albanians, "it is always the American ambassador at the end of the day who is receiving the final word and who is deciding what is happening," he added.
Kosovo is not recognized by most of humanity, including Russia, China and India, as well as Serbia itself, noted Mirkovic. Washington's policy since 2008, regardless of which party is in power, has pressed Belgrade to recognize Kosovo as an independent state.
"Why NATO bombed Yugoslavia 20 years ago? Because it wanted a position in the Balkans, it wanted a military base like Bondsteel," Mirkovic explained, referring to the huge US base in southeastern Kosovo.
Haradinaj would have been unaware of the national prayer breakfast in Washington in February, supposedly on account of tariffs. There were even reports that he and another KLA commander - Kosovo's president, Hashim Thaci - were being denied visas to enter the United States and address the issue. However, Haradinaj was able to travel to the US last weekend by posting a photo of Detroit on his Twitter account.
His plans during this US visit seem to include only meetings with members of the Albanian diaspora, however, rather than any meeting with officials of the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Vucic Calls on Kosovo Serbs Not to 'React to Provocation' Despite Tensions
BELGRADE (Sputnik) - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Friday called on Kosovo Serbs not to react to provocations over the possible establishment of the Association of Serb Municipalities, and to sustain peace in the self-proclaimed state despite the escalation of situation.
"Pristina will not lift a finger to form the Association of Serb Majority Municipalities... I ask you, dear Serbs, not to do anything because of this that some Albanians or a part of the international community could use as a trigger for taking any actions against you... I ask you not to react to any provocation... And we'll commit to providing your security," Vucic said in an open letter.
On Saturday, the Kosovo authorities should present to the EU a draft of the statue for the Association of Serb Municipalities that would include 10 municipalities with a total area of over 15 percent of Kosovo's territory and a population of over 100,000 people, with ethnic Serbs prevailing. The establishment of the association was initiated by the EU and Pristina in 2013, but still was not achieved.
Vucic added that he expected the NATO-led Kosovo Force peacekeeping mission to "safeguard peace and to clamp down any attempt... to occupy key infrastructure objects."
On Saturday, an emergency meeting of the country's national security council will be held as Kosovo's Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj reportedly warned that a possible attempt of ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo "to proclaim autonomy" would be met with a response.
Kosovo proclaimed its independence from Serbia in 2008, but Belgrade did not recognize it.
