Trump makes 15 new friends in Davos, three of Indian origin
Trump, who arrived here Thursday afternoon, told Schwab who on his part said the US President's strong leadership is open to misconceptions and biased interpretations that he has made "15 new friends" here in Davos.
US President Donald Trump on Friday declared before a full house at Davos that he has made "15 new friends" whom he did not know before at a dinner last night - including three of Indian origin. After a 'band' welcome and a nearly 20-minute speech, Trump sat down for a brief question and answers session with WEF Founder Klaus Schwab on the last day of the annual pow-wow of rich and powerful from across the 'fractured' world and began by complementing him for putting together this "really great" economic forum, reports PTI.
Trump, who arrived here Thursday afternoon, told Schwab - who on his part said the US President's strong leadership is open to misconceptions and biased interpretations - that he has made "15 new friends" here in Davos. "We had dinner last night with about 15 leaders of industry - none of whom I knew, but all of whom I have read about for years - and it was truly an incredible group," Trump said.
"And I think I have 15 new friends. So this has been really great what you have done in putting it together, the economic forum," he said. These 15 industry leaders from Europe - whom Trump described as "very powerful businesspeople of the world" and asked them to introduce themselves one by one and say a few words at the dinner table, as per a White House release -included Swiss pharma giant Novartis' incoming CEO Vas Narasimhan, Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri and Deloitte CEO Punit Renjen.
Others were heads of Bayer, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Siemens, AB Volvo, SAP, Adidas, Statoil, Nestle, ABB and HSBC. At the dinner, Renjen said, "Mr President, thank you for having me. Punit Renjen from Deloitte. On behalf of 265,000 employees across the globe, 70,000 in the US, thank you again for having us".
As per the White House release, Trump replied, "Great company. Thank you very much. Great job." Suri said Nokia runs the world's second largest telecom network and has 15,000 people in the US and one of its strongest R&D setups in the world is spread throughout the US.
He further said, "We have half of the acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent. We own Nokia Bell Labs, which is in New Jersey. We do a lot of stuff in the West Coast, in Chicago, and throughout the country, really. So just under half of our people do research and development, and the rest are doing services and 4G networks and 5G. So I'm very happy and pleased with your infrastructure focus..."
Narasimhan said Novartis is one of the largest health care companies in the world and its focus is on innovative medicines, generics, as well as eye care. He elaborated that Novartis has about 22,000 employees in the US across 21 sites and invests about USD 14 billion every year in the US, including USD 3.5 billion in research.
Further, he described US as one of the key markets and also key places where it drives innovation. "And we are really pleased with the tax reform, but also very pleased with the great progress being made at FDA. We believe you have a great leadership team there and they are doing all the right things to accelerate innovation," he said.
Trump replied, "Scott is great, and Alex is great. You know, Alex is just starting, and he's highly respected. So that's fantastic. Scott Gottlieb, as you know, is a star," referring to his FDA Commissioner and Health and Human Services Secretary, respectively. Narasimhan said further, "He (Scott) is a star. And I think his vision for tobacco and trying to improve - reduce the use of tobacco around the world is also very inspiring."
After everyone's introduction, Trump said, "I want to thank everybody. Really, you have done incredible work, incredible jobs. These are some of the great companies of the world, many of the great companies of the world".

Press Release
Nokia's customer agreements span the full end-to-end spectrum of 5G technologies and major global regions
28 March 2019
Espoo, Finland - Nokia is celebrating its 30th commercial 5G deal with the announcement March 25th of a new contract with Austria's A1. The agreements demonstrate Nokia's extensive portfolio of 5G capabilities, the industry's only true end-to-end range available globally from a single provider.
Taken together, the 30 commercial deals - including 16 with publicly named service provider customers - offer an insight into the progress of 5G roll-outs around the world and illustrate the value network operators see in this technology. A full list of Nokia's 5G announcements can be found here.
"This achievement marks a proud moment for Nokia as a company," commented Rajeev Suri, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nokia. "With these agreements, creating new partnerships and continuing existing relationships around the world, we can see the promise of 5G becoming a reality. Many of the 30 commercial 5G deals we celebrate today include multiple elements from across our end-to-end portfolio as our customers turn to Nokia at each stage of their 5G investment cycle."
Where operators are looking for the capability to quickly deploy new 5G capacity and speed to their existing network, Harri Holma, Nokia Bell Labs Fellow, explains in a March 26 blog how Nokia 5G radio can be deployed regardless of the incumbent 4G network vendor.
With the industry's most comprehensive portfolio of small cells and macro solutions, alongside the smart transport to connect them, Nokia's 5G product suite is designed to offer operators the flexibility and capability to deliver 5G to a full range of end users. With the new Fixed Wireless Access device announced at MWC 2019, Nokia technologies can take our customers' services right into users' homes - allowing operators to provide complete coverage to end users, and delivering the first experience of real 5G to consumers.
Powering its 5G portfolio with truly "cloud native" core technology rather than an evolution of current core solutions means Nokia has the flexibility to deliver on key client needs. This capability means operators can offer low latency, high throughput, content-rich services - and can integrate their 5G builds alongside existing 2G, 3G, 4G radio and fixed access networks.
"Nokia's momentum in 5G agreements shows that its end-to-end strategy with a broad range of technology solutions is working," said Chris Nicoll, ACG Wireless and Mobility Principal Analyst. "Given its articulated evolution path for this technology, Nokia can offer long-term partnership, rather than a transactional vendor relationship - an approach that also is contributing to this momentum. Service providers on the journey to 5G are at different stages of maturity and it is crucial that vendors in this market are prepared to support that full journey, not just part of the way."

World's most sophisticated comercial communications satellite launched successfully
gCaptain
December 23, 2021
Press Release - Inmarsat, the world leader in global, mobile satellite communications confirms the successful launch of its first Inmarsat-6 satellite, I-6 F1, by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) from the JAXA Tanegashima Space Center in Japan.
The Inmarsat-6s (I-6) are Inmarsat's first ever hybrid L- and Ka-band satellites, incorporating increased capacity and new technological advances for ELERA's transformational L-band services alongside additional Global Xpress (GX) high-speed broadband capacity. Adding to an existing global fleet of 14 geostationary satellites they extend Inmarsat's commitment to mission critical services while enabling a new generation of pioneering technologies to connect and sustain the world. This launch is the first of seven planned for Inmarsat by 2024 in the company's fully-funded technology roadmap.
Launch success was confirmed by MHI at 15:59 UK time on 22 December following satellite separation from the H-IIA launch vehicle, with successful signal acquisition soon afterwards.
The most sophisticated commercial communications satellite ever launched, I-6 F1 is comparable in size to a London double-decker bus, with a deployed solar arrays 'wingspan' similar to a Boeing 767 and a 9 metre wide L-band reflector that will be deployed over the coming days. The satellite will then be raised to geostationary orbit (GEO) approximately 36,000km (~22,500 miles) above the Earth via its all-electric propulsion system and then undergo a thorough and extensive testing programme. I-6 F1 will enter service in 2023. Ground stations in Western Australia will support I-6 F1.
Rajeev Suri, CEO of Inmarsat, said "This launch marks Inmarsat's newest technological leap forward as we maintain our strong commercial momentum and sector leadership. It gives me great pleasure and pride to confirm the successful launch of I-6 F1. This satellite extends our world leading mobile satellite communications services for our customers and partners, especially in the Indo Pacific region. My warmest thanks and congratulations go to the Inmarsat team that delivered flawlessly on this project as well as our launch provider Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and our satellite manufacturing partner Airbus Defence and Space."
The I-6 satellites demonstrate Inmarsat's ongoing investment and commitment to its global leadership in L-band satellite services to 2040 and beyond for the benefit of mobility customers worldwide. They deliver an enhanced platform for those looking to embrace the next wave of world-changing technologies that ELERA enables, including the rapidly growing Industrial Internet of Things (Industrial IoT) satellite connectivity market segment, by providing dramatically increased network capacity and resilience.
These new capabilities from the I-6s mean greater capacity and coverage, greater speeds and a greater portfolio of innovative connectivity solutions for ELERA and Global Xpress (GX) networks. The I-6 satellites, like all Inmarsat ELERA and GX spacecraft, are backward-compatible with existing terminals, enSuring that current and future customers will continue to benefit from new advances.
The I-6s also substantially increase the effective capacity of the network available to ELERA customers with double the beams, 50% more spectrum per beam and double the power of the I-4s, matching customer demand as and where it is needed. They also add further depth in Inmarsat's global coverage for even greater assurance to customers of the redundancy and resilience of Inmarsat's world-leading L-band network.
The GX6 payloads hosted on the I-6s add targeted high capacity to Inmarsat's high-speed GX network, enSuring it continues to support the growing need of commercial and government customers for data, particularly in congested regions or hotspots where it is needed most.
The launch of the I-6s is further evidence of the momentum underpinning Inmarsat's business and technology leadership in global mobility communications. I-6 plays an integral role in the reliable GEO infrastructure that underpins Inmarsat ORCHESTRA - the world's first network that will combine GEO, highly elliptical orbit (HEO), low Earth orbit (LEO) and terrestrial 5G into one harmonious solution.
