UK eyes 'walk me home' phone-tracker to protect lone women
LONDON – A top British government official is backing a phone company's proposal for a new tracking service to help protect women walking alone, an idea pitched amid ongoing outrage over the slayings of two young women who were targeted near their homes in London.
The chief executive of Britain's biggest phone company, BT, proposed the "walk me home" service in a letter to Home Secretary Priti Patel. Once a woman activated an app on her phone, the service would track her journey and send an alert to her emergency contacts if she didn't reach her destination on time, Philip Jansen said in the letter.
The U.K. Home Office confirmed Patel had received the letter and would respond in "due course." Patel was more supportive in comments to the Daily Mail.
"This new phone line is exactly the kind of innovative scheme which would be good to get going as soon as we can,'' the newspaper quoted her as saying. "I'm now looking at it with my team and liaising with BT."
The "walk me home'' service could be up and running by Christmas, the Mail reported.
The service would complement Britain's existing nationwide emergency number, Jansen said. BT has run Britain's 999 emergency number for 84 years and is currently upgrading the system.
In March, Sarah Everard, a33-year-old marketing executive, was abducted, raped and killed by a serving police officer who was convicted of murder and other charges this month and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Primary school teacher Sabina Nessa, 28, was killed six months later as she walked through a park in south London on her way to meet a friend.
"Male violence is causing so many people , especially women, to live in fear," Jansen wrote in the Daily Mail. "And their parents, partners and friends worry too, more now than ever. ...
"I am not a politician, I can't change society, but if I can use innovative technology to improve personal safety, then I am determined to do so." he said.

Service outages, compromised security possible unless government takes common-sense approach to Huawei - BT CEO
Rushing to exclude Chinese telecom giant Huawei from the UK market may have serious consequences, including a failure to keep British networks safe, the head of telecommunications company BT has warned.
Downing Street is to announce on Tuesday whether it would reverse January's decision to allow Huawei to provide equipment for developing 5G in Britain. London is under serious pressure from Washington to push the Chinese giant out of Britain over security concerns.
A rushed decision regarding Huawei may be disruptive for Britain, BT CEO Philip Jansen warned on Monday. Rather than keep the networks safe, it could compromise their security.
"We need to make sure that any change of direction does not lead to more risk in the short term," he told BBC Radio 4.
For example, if all transactions with the Chinese company are forbidden, British operators currently using its equipment will not be able to keep the firmware up to date. In a best-case scenario, it would take five years to replace Huawei components in British networks, and, in that time, some 15 to 20 big software upgrades are likely to be released by the company, Jansen said.
"If we get to a situation where things need to go very, very fast, then, ... potentially, service for 24 million BT Group mobile customers is put into question, [resulting in] outages," he added.
Washington accuses Huawei of serving as an agent of the Chinese government and collecting intelligence through the equipment it sells. The company says it has been smeared, because the US has failed to catch up with Chinese vendors in developing 5G solutions and is brandishing the national security cudgel to undermine competition.
Jansen said BT was in talks with the British government to explain the potential ramifications of the decisions it may soon take, and hoped "common sense would prevail" in the end "and we will head the right direction here".

BT boss Philip Jansen confirms he has Covid-19 after rubbing shoulders with other industry moguls
The chief executive of BT has been diagnosed with COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by coronavirus.
Philip Jansen, 53, tested positive late on Thursday afternoon and said he is following the Public Health England protocols to isolate himself.
He said he decided to go public because he had attended an event earlier in the week with other figures in the mobile phone industry.
BT said it is now working closely with Public Health England to deep clean relevant parts of its group headquarters and will ensure those employees who have had contact with Mr Jansen are told.
Mr Jansen said: "Having felt slightly unwell I decided as a precaution to be tested.
"As soon as the test results were known I isolated myself at home."
"I've met several industry partners this week so felt it was the responsible thing to do to alert them to this fact as soon as I could."
"Given my symptoms seem relatively mild, I will continue to lead BT but work with my team remotely over the coming week. There will be no disruption to the business."
Employees who have been in contact with the chief executive have been advised
to self-isolate.
Mr Jansen has been chief executive of the telecoms group for just over a year.
In the outbreak which began in China, 10 people have died in the UK after contracting COVID-19 and 590 people have been infected.

BT to cut 55,000 jobs with up to a fifth replaced by AI
By Tom Espiner Business reporter, BBC News 18 May 2023
Telecoms giant BT is to shed up to 55,000 jobs by the end of the decade, mostly in the UK, as it cuts costs.
Up to a fifth of those cuts will come in customer services as staff are replaced by technologies including artificial intelligence.
The headcount reduction from the current workforce of 130,000 includes staff and contractors.
"Whenever you get new technologies you can get big changes," said chief executive Philip Jansen.
He said "generative AI" tools such as ChatGPT - which can write essays, scripts, poems, and solve computer coding in a human-like way - "gives us confidence we can go even further".
Mr Jansen said AI would make services faster, better and more seamless, adding that the changes would not mean customers will "feel like they are dealing with robots".
"We are multi-channel, we are online, we have 450 stores and that's not changing at all," he said.
"There are plenty of opportunities for our customers to deal with people at BT, plenty of people to speak to."
Mr Jansen added that "new technologies drive new jobs", although BT has said it will have a"much smaller workforce" by the end of the 2020s.
BT, which is the UK's largest broadband and mobile provider, is currently continuing to expand its fibre network as it moves away from copper. The company said that once the work was completed it would not need as many staff to build and maintain its networks.
In addition, newer, more efficient technology, including artificial intelligence, means fewer people will be needed to serve customers in future, it said.
The move comes shortly after Vodafone said it would axe a tenth of its staff over the next three years, equating to 11,000 jobs.
UK hit
Mr Jansen said BT would become "a leaner business with a brighter future", with the firm planning to get rid of between 40,000 and 55,000 jobs by 2030.
The firm has about 80,000 employees in the UK, and this is where the bulk of the cuts will come. It has about 20,000 staff abroad.
It also has 30,000 contractors, mainly abroad. Many of those roles will go.
The cuts break down as:
More than 15,000 cuts as BT completes building fibre networks in the UK
More than 10,000 as new UK networks require less maintenance
More than 10,000 from using new tech including AI
About 5,000 from restructuring
The Communications and Workers Union (CWU) said the BT announcement was "no surprise".
"The introduction of new technologies across the company, along with the completion of the fibre infrastructure build replacing the copper network, was always going to result in less labour costs for the company in the coming years," a CWU spokesperson said.
But the union said it wants BT to keep as many of its core employees as possible, with job cuts coming from sub-contractors "in the first instance", and through roles not being replaced as people leave the business.
The BT announcement was made as it reported a 12% drop in profits of ?1.7bn for the year to April.
Its shares fell more than 7% after its results fell short of analysts' expectations.
James Barford, head of telecoms research at Enders Analysis, said the BT job cuts were mostly about fewer people being needed in building networks, whereas the Vodafone cuts were "more general efficiency savings".
He said that in both cases plans were "already broadly in place, with savings previously described in monetary terms rather than headcount reduction".
Possibly, the firms are now talking about job cuts "to help convince sceptical investors that they will actually deliver the promised savings", Mr Barford added.
