McDonald: Tom Hanks Movie About Mr. Rogers Is a 'PedoPhile Signal'
Chris McDonald, a Q Anon-advocating right-wing crackpot, hosted firefighter prophet fraud Mark Taylor on his show and offered a bizarre claim about the new movie starring Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers. He says the movie is a signal to pedoPhiles. A signal to do what? I have no idea and neither does he. Welcome to the right-wing fever swamps.
McDonald, who frequently hosts Republican Rep. Phil Roe of Tennessee on his program, claimed that Hanks has been "named in many, many pedoPhile-related tweets, pedoPhile-related call-outs," and asserted that the new Mr. Rogers film is really a pedoPhile "code."
"This is insanity to me," McDonald said. "He's going to be in the role of Mr. Rogers in this new movie that is coming out and I don't think that's by mistake. Again, I think that's just code, it's signaling, it's a pedoPhile signal."
McDonald said that while he has never heard anything negative about Fred Rogers, it was obvious that Rogers "wasn't the most masculine guy out there" and that "he dealt with children," so "it makes you wonder" about the real purpose of the movie.
"I just think this thing with Tom Hanks, again, you put a mainstream actor in this role and, again, it just is almost like it's blatantly in our face and saying, 'Guess what? We're going to recruit more of the pedoPhilia by putting this man up as Mr. Rogers, who deals with children,'"
McDonald concluded.

Congress passes sweeping end-of-year bill impacting 'every corner' of the veteran community
WASHINGTON - Congress approved a bill Wednesday that increases resources for homeless veterans, creates a Department of Veterans Affairs advisory committee for Native American veterans and mandates that every VA hospital hire a dedicated women's health provider, among dozens of other measures. The legislative package, which lawmakers described as an end-of-year omnibus bill for veterans, is over 340 pages long and includes numerous provisions for female veterans, Native American veterans, homeless veterans, student veterans, veterans experiencing the effects of toxic exposures and those affected by the coronavirus. Following the Senate's approval last week, the House passed the bill Wednesday afternoon by voice vote without any objections. It now heads to President Donald Trump's desk for his signature. The vote comes as Congress is wrapping up its 116th legislative session. "This is the culmination of two years of bipartisan work," Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., said on the House floor Wednesday. "There is something in this bill for just about every one of our nation's veterans and their loved ones." The bill is named for Roe, who didn't seek reelection this year, and Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., who resigned from the Senate at the end of 2019. Both men were leaders on the Senate and House veterans' affairs committees. "I'm proud that one of my last votes of Congress will be in support of this bill, and I'm also humbled it bears my name and that of my friend," Roe said. "Helping to serve my fellow veterans in Congress these past 12 years has been the honor of a lifetime." In an effort to improve services for women veterans, the bill creates a dedicated Office of Women's Health at VA, provides $20 million to retrofit VA hospitals with women's health spaces and makes permanent a program to provide childcare at VA facilities, among other measures. Women are the fastest-growing demographic in the military, with the number using VA health care almost tripling since 2000, from 160,000 to 475,000, according to VA data. Veterans' advocates have criticized the department for being slow to adapt to treating more women. One piece of the bill aims to prevent sexual harassment and assault at VA facilities. It would require the department to create an anti-harassment and anti-sexual assault policy and designate someone at each VA facility to receive reports of harassment. A working group will be created to help implement the policy.
Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, said the measure was timely. He noted a VA Office of the Inspector General report last week that found VA Secretary Robert Wilkie and other senior VA officials ignored problems of sexual harassment at the Washington DC VA Medical Center and attempted to discredit the credibility of the woman who reported an assault. Takano, as well as many other Democrats and national veterans' organizations, have since called for Wilkie's resignation. "Women are the fastest growing demographic in the veteran community, and the VA must be prepared to welcome them," Takano said on the House floor Wednesday. "[The report] emphasized the need to address a toxic culture." The bill also aims to help veterans suffering from military sexual trauma. In 2018, the VA Office of Inspector General reported that the department wrongfully denied benefits to thousands of veterans who filed claims for military sexual trauma - rejection that potentially caused stress and psychological harm, the IG said. The legislative package would require teams who specialize in military sexual trauma to process those benefits claims. It would also allow veterans who must be examined during the claims process to choose the sex of the medical provider examining them.

A group of over 60 consumer watchdog groups and unions sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Thursday, urging them to oppose legislation that protects healthcare providers from lawsuits related to COVID 19, the disease the CCP virus causes.
"The undersigned organizations strongly urge you to oppose H.R. 7059, the "Coronavirus Provider Protection Act,"' the letter stated. "We understand that the stated impetus for this legislation is to support front-line health care workers. However, this bill creates the potential for extreme harm to patients, and could have lethal consequences for many," the letter continued.
The Coronavirus Provider Protection Act, which was introduced in late May, aims to protect health care providers who act in good faith and abide by government guidelines from lawsuits while caring for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The authors of the bipartisan bill say it maintains basic protections for patients hurt as a result of gross negligence or misconduct and allows them to still sue.
"The COVID-19 pandemic upended health care delivery across the country. Health care providers have gone above and beyond to meet whatever challenges they've faced, but now we owe it to them to ensure they are protected from frivolous litigation," said Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) in a statement.
Meanwhile, the watchdog groups argue that there is no need for the new legislation because there are pre-existing laws that protect providers from such lawsuits.
"Our current legal system already provides that protection, while also helping ensure that the health care system has effective incentives to place a priority on patient safety and health," the letter stated.
The letter highlights the fact that of the 140,000 people who have died from COVID 19, only 40 lawsuits related to the virus have been filed and those are mostly against nursing homes.
The consumer advocacy groups argue that the liability protection bill is too broad and protects nursing homes, which they believe should not be protected because it leaves the families of nursing home victims without any legal recourse.
"Organizations that advocate on behalf of nursing home residents expressed strong opposition to giving immunity to nursing homes that were negligent in the care they provided to nursing home residents," the watchdog letter states. "The nursing home industry has long and actively fought federal pandemic preparedness requirements, even lobbying against such rules before the current administration," it continues.
The letter goes on to say that there are other areas of the bill that are too broad and offer providers protection from non-COVID 19 related liability, including that "the bill also would grant immunity to providers and entities that violate medical standards of care if they can point to staffing or resource limitations."

Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) announced he will not seek reelection when his term ends later this year, making him among the two-dozen members of the GOP to not seek reelection in the House.
"Serving East Tennesseans these past 11 years has been the honor of my life, and I will be forever grateful for the trust my friends and neighbors put in me to represent them. As someone who practiced medicine for over 30 years, I said I would serve five or six terms because I never intended this job to be a second career. Roe, who will be 75 years old when his term ends, said that the "challenges we are facing now as complex as ever, and I still have a lot of fire in my belly" and added that he looks forward to "representing and working with President [Donald] Trump in favor of the free-market, conservative policies so many of us hold dear."
He added: "I'm proud of the bipartisan successes. They don't always make the headlines, but they are critical to our nation's future. Legislation I authored has dramatically increased the availability of lifesaving epinephrine in schools for those who suffer from deadly food allergies; and the Desert Storm and Desert Shield War Memorial will be built on the National Mall in the coming years as a result of four years of effort to get my bill across the finish line."
Tennessee's 1st Congressional District likely will stay in Republican hands. In 2016, Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by nearly 60 points.
According to poll aggregator FiveThirtyEight, before Roe's announcement that he wouldn't seek reelection, he had a 99 out of 100 percent chance of winning, and it says his district "6th-most-Republican" in the United States.

WASHINGTON - House lawmakers suggested Tuesday that Department of Veterans Affairs officials postpone a major expansion of veterans' access to private-sector doctors, following warnings that its information technology system is flawed and could disrupt patient care.
The department is working toward a June 6 deadline to implement a new community care program for VA patients that was mandated by Congress under the VA Mission Act, a major reform bill. The program aims to replace the much-maligned Veterans Choice Program, which has been in place since 2014.
The U.S. Digital Service - a White House team of software developers that helps federal agencies improve their technology - recommended last month that the VA stop developing its IT system for the new program, which it described as flawed, with the potential to create confusion and disruption for veterans and VA doctors.
"I believe in taking the time to get things right," said Rep. Phil Roe of Tennessee, the ranking Republican on the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. "I would rather VA postpone implementation of this program than to rush to implementation in name only and have veterans pay the price for it."

The House passed the Burn Pit Registry Enhancement Act on Wednesday with a vote of 416-0. It would allow family members of deceased servicemembers and veterans to enter cause of death in the registry. As of now, only registered individuals are allowed to update their health information.
The change was recommended by veterans groups, including Burn Pits 360, which has expressed concerns that the registry hasn't been used to his fullest potential.
"According to Burn Pits 360, without tracking [causes of death] ... the registry's ability to establish mortality rates related to conditions and diseases associated to toxic exposure will be precluded," said Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., the ranking Republican on the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs.
Pits were used until 2010 at U.S. military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan to burn trash, human waste, petroleum, rubber and other debris, releasing hazardous fumes into the air. Some servicemembers exposed to the smoke have attributed medical conditions, such as respiratory issues and cancer, to it.

'A train wreck': Veterans haven't received GI Bill payments for months due to VA 'glitches'
A report from NBC News says the Department of Veterans Affairs has been experiencing technology glitches that have delayed GI Bill housing and tuition payments to veterans for months.
Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) called the situation "a train wreck."
What are the details?
As of Nov. 8, the VA acknowledged that more than 82,000 veterans still have not received their housing benefits, with only weeks remaining in the semester. According to NBC, hundreds of thousands of GI Bill recipients are believed to have been affected by the delays, which have been as long as 90 days in some instances.
John Kamin with the American Legion told KNWA-TV that some student veterans are now facing eviction due to missing payments.
He said many are "left moving back in with their parents or couch surfing because the VA was not able to honor these veterans and their service."
Veteran Shelley Roundtree is one of those impacted by the delayed stipends. "I'm about to lose everything that I own and become homeless," he told NBC News. "I don't want to be that veteran on the street begging for change because I haven't received what I was promised."
Roundtree was evicted from his apartment due to the missed housing payments, and lives on his sister's couch while his possessions sit in a storage facility. He says he can no longer afford to pay the storage fees, meaning his belongings could now be auctioned off by the facility.
How could this happen?
Education benefits for veterans were expanded through the 2017 Harry W. Colmery Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2017 - also known as the "Forever GI Bill" - which included scrapping the time limit for veterans to utilize their GI Bill benefits and changing the way housing payments are calculated.
The VA blamed the ongoing delays on its antiquated IT system, which required upgrades to implement the changes brought on by the Forever GI Bill. But Congressman Jim Banks (R-Ind.), who serves on the Veterans Affairs Committee, said that's no excuse.
"We'll get to the bottom of the matter," Banks told KNWA. "We'll do everything we can to see that it's fixed," insisting that the VA was aware beforehand that its technology would need to be updated.
Rep. Roe agreed. "This is - to be kind - this is a train wreck," he told NBC. "It's really frustrating the amount of money that Congress has appropriated for veterans, and this is the way VA has rolled it out. This discussion started over a year ago."
The Veterans' Affairs Committee is set to meet on Wednesday to have hearings on the matter.
