Survivors Slam New Vatican Exposé That Ties Sex Abuse
to Gay Priests
The French author of a shocking book on gay priests inside the Vatican suggests a climate of blackmail and secrecy prevents whistleblowers from coming forward
ROME-Fréderic Martel, a gay French author whose book In The Closet of the Vatican will be published Thursday to coincide with the Vatican's crisis summit on clerical sex abuse, drew immediate criticism from victims of clerical sex abuse when he suggested a "complex link" between gay priests and the abuse issue.
Sexual-abuse survivor Peter Saunders, who was expelled from the Vatican's Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors in 2017 for criticizing the church's lack of resolve, said that many of the victims he has worked with over the years were female, which he says proves his point. "There is no link between people who are gay and people who abuse children."
Saunders, who is part of the victim-survivor group Ending Clergy Abuse, added, "Once you are inside the church and you are gay, you are bound to be silent and then when you see someone abusing, you are silenced from reporting it."
Martel told reporters at Rome's foreign press association that his book was informed by 27 gay priests who live or work inside Vatican City. His conclusion, based on extensive interviews with them, is that the vast majority of the College of Cardinals-the group of esteemed prelates who vote in conclaves-are gay. "They were hit on, flirted with, and slept with a lot of cardinals in the College of Cardinals," Martel says. "One gay priest alone told me he had slept with six different cardinals."
In his book, which The Daily Beastobtained independently ahead of the Feb. 21 release date, Martel writes that the culture of secrecy tied to the high number of gay priests also feeds the coverup. "Homosexuality is also one of the keys that explain the institutionalized coverup of sexual crimes and misdemeanors, of which there are now tens of thousands," he writes. "Because the 'culture of secrecy,' which was necessary to maintain silence about the huge presence of homosexuality inside the church, has made it possible to hide sexual abuse, and for predators to benefit from this system of protection within the institution-even though pedophilia is not the subject of this book."

Abuse victims demand to see pope, say bishops should be sacked
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Victims of sexual abuse by the Catholic clergy on Wednesday demanded to meet Pope Francis personally to press demands that bishops who covered up such offences be dismissed from the priesthood. The 10 victims met for nearly three hours with five Vatican officials a day before the start of an unprecedented conference on abuse within the Church, designed to guide senior bishops on how best to tackle a problem that has decimated its credibility.
All the survivors of abuse expressed disappointment that the pope did not come to the meeting, even though he was not scheduled to be there. "If he can meet with all those bishops over there he can meet with us," said Peter Isely, who was abused by a priest when he was a boy. "We made our demands for zero tolerance. We want the pope to write into universal law: zero tolerance for the cover-up of sex crimes. They can do it right now," he told reporters after the meeting with the officials, all of them clerics. He and other victims said bishops who had covered up abuse should be dismissed from the priesthood, just like those who had committed the abuse itself.
Other abuse victims waited outside the building where the meeting took place. "We believed that this morning's meeting would be with the pope, with a cross-section of survivors from around the world," one, Englishman Peter Saunders, told Reuters TV. He was not among those who took part in the meeting. "It would seem that the pope, once again, is giving the two fingers to survivors and to child protection everywhere," he said, using an English expression for a crude gesture.
The Vatican said the pope's presence at the meeting was never intended because he would see others during the conference. Isely and others who attended Wednesday's meeting said they too wanted to meet the pope because they represented those with the most experience and information in gathering data on both abusers as well as victims. Victims who meet Francis and address the four-day conference will remain anonymous at their request.

Pope denounces constant accusers as sex abuse survivors express anger
February 20, 2019 / 8:42 AM
ROME (Reuters) - Pope Francis said on Wednesday that people who spent their lives denouncing the Catholic Church were friends of the devil, as survivors of sexual abuse by clergymen accused him of snubbing an invitation to meet them.
Speaking on the eve of a conference he has convened to guide senior bishops on how to tackle widespread abuse that has decimated the Church's credibility, Frances said its mistakes should be corrected.
But those accusers who did nothing but criticize the Church were "friends, cousins and relatives of the devil," he told worshippers at the Vatican.
Gathered outside the Vatican, a group of abuse survivors said they were disappointed that the pontiff had declined their invitation to meet them.
"We believed that this morning's meeting would be with the Pope, with a cross-section of survivors from around the world," one, Englishman Peter Saunders, told Reuters TV.
"It would seem that the Pope, once again, is giving the two fingers to survivors and to child protection everywhere," he said, using an English expression for a crude gesture.
