Maui's neglected grasslands caused Lahaina fire to grow with deadly speed
'''Visual analysis retraces how the grasslands blazed. Landowners and the government have done little to address the well-known problem.
LAHAINA, Hawaii - The hills above Lahaina's historic downtown have been surrounded by nonnative grasses for more than a century.'''
The grasses - relics of the sugar cane plantations in the area that largely shuttered in 1999 - dried out the landscape. They grew taller after winter rains. Brushfires would sweep through and the species adapted and regrew, crowding out native grasses and moving close to homes. Locals who live surrounded by these fields say they rarely saw anyone come to manage the vegetation.
[Why Hawaii's wildfires are so devastating - and 'predictable']
Then on Aug. 8, power lines fell near one of these flammable fields, whipping fire down the hills, in a sequence of events that would lead to one of the deadliest wildfires in U.S. history.

A Washington Post investigation found that the inferno that burned Lahaina town to the ground began on a fallow, unmanaged plot of land on a hill north of downtown, and the geographic spread and density of the nonnative grasses were key elements to creating a fast-moving, uncontrollable fire.
The comprehensive retracing is based on a review of topographic maps, satellite imagery, videos recorded by eyewitnesses and tax parcel data, as well as interviews with area residents and experts in fire, ecology and botany. It shows how powerful winds blowing in a southwesterly direction pushed the flames down hills through massive fields of overgrown vegetation - feeding a fire that would consume propane tanks, melt steel and kill at least 115 people, though the toll is expected to rise.
The Post's investigation reveals that despite years of repeated warnings of fire risk, weak code enforcement and a lack of government resources have hampered meaningful action to manage the grasses.

The fields where the fires started and spread are primarily owned by three parties: Kamehameha Schools, also known as the Bishop Estate, an educational trust that is one of the state's largest private land owners; the state of Hawaii; and Peter Martin, a prominent local developer.
While grasses aren't the only factor - other elements have been the subject of lawsuits, including emergency preparedness, the electrical grid and water scarcity - the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources said in an email to The Post that West Maui is at a high risk for wildfire because of invasive grasses, many of which "lack active management."
"The town was basically surrounded by a powder keg waiting to go off with a spark," said David Bowman, a professor of pyrogeography and fire science at the University of Tasmania.
What happened on Maui could be repeated across the Hawaiian islands, where much of the land has similarly large, fallow fields of nonnative grasses.

The coronation of King Charles III will fall on Saturday, May 6, when the new monarch will sit on the controversial Stone of Destiny.
The Stone of Destiny, a historical artefact connected to Scotland, is at the heart of a controversy as the Coronation of King Charles III is just over the horizon in early May.
After the announcement that the legendary stone, also known as the Stone of Scone, would be moved from Edinburgh to Westminster Abbey to play a 'crucial role' at the royal event, the idea was widely criticised.
The Royal Family's regalia features jewels and St Edward's Crown so an ancient rock that isn't dazzling may not seem important but it is, in fact, of huge cultural significance. Here's what the Stone of Destiny is, how it will feature in King Charles III's coronation and where the stone is now.

Under the royal symbol of the fleur de lis, mutually aid the Maccabee men (worker bees) to collect the children (flowers grown on the Farm create pollen) and feed the drones (sickos) and Queen and ensure against liability (exposure or financial).

Various groups (hives) in different countries, with ties, under the royal symbol (and protection) of the Fleur de Lis (the Queen), started as "mutual aid fraternities/societies" now "insurance companies". Social groups exist to provide the Queen and "drones" (sickos) with "pollen" (from children) while simultaneously "insuring" indemnity (financial & legal liability).
Who was Oronhyatekha? Anonymous 8/6/2019 20:50:11 No. 1448 [M]

>Who was Oronhyatekha?
Christian name: Peter Martin
Mohawk man, highly educated (Oxford), energetic and successful in business (mltinational financial institution), a physician and a native statesman; an athlete of international standing; and an outspoken champion of the rights of women, children, and minorities
By 1881 he had become Supreme Chief Ranger of Foresters, the organisation's international CEO, a position that he held for a record 26 years. In 1889, he moved to Toronto, where the IOF headquarters had relocated. During his tenure as SCR, he transformed the order into one of the wealthiest fraternal financial institutions in the Victorian world; today, it counts more than one-million members in North America and the European Union. Oronhyatekha was an active Orangeman and served as County Grand Master of Middlesex Country Orange Lodge
He belonged to the International Order of Good Templars, several branches of the Masonic Order, the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the Knights of the Maccabees, and the Orange Order. He was the Worshipful Master of Richardson Masonic Lodge in Stouffville, Ontario in 1894.
In the 1890s, he purchased an island across from Deseronto which he renamed Foresters' Island. Here, he built a second family home, an IOF meeting and dining hall, a bandstand, the Isle Hotel and cottages for guests, and a wharf at which boats from the mainland could dock. While the hotel seems to have been open for all guests, not just IOF members, he hosted huge IOF gatherings each summer to celebrate its anniversaries.
[T]he one achievement of which Oronhyatekha was most proud was the enterprise his contemporaries regarded as his only significant failure. In 1904, he created an orphanage on the Bay of Quinte, Ontario, It opened for operations in 1906, and Oronhyatekha described it as his life's crowning achievement.
APPLY:
Local man, highly educated (in England), was the bridge between various organizations internationally, bought an island for members' use, started a "child help" facility. In some ways, a social justice warrior prototype!
>Who are the Foresters?
Financial company (insurance) that facilitates "helping children" (providing them to the ring)
>Who was the Prince of Wales?
The eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Edward was related to royalty throughout Europe.
>Who is the Queen Bee (L.O.T.M)
Ultimate head, literal and figurative
The one who must be sustained, and for whom all works are done to benefit
Ghislane Maxwell called herself "the Queen bee"
>Who are the farmers who take the honey?
honey = adrenochrome?
adrenochrome must be harvested under certain circumstances, and ingested in a timely manner
"farmers who take the honey" = those sacrificing children, harvesting adrenochrome?
APPLY:
The Foresters were an early international organization that networked men in a socially acceptable way, with the veneer or "helping children" under the protection of royalty throughout Europe and had the ability and means to indemnify themselves financially as well as socially with its sister organization, the Ladies of the Maccabees, provided access to the women while giving them a way to 'belong,'participate in social justice causes, and also interface while keeping the wives happy and giving the men (an excuse) a similar framework/scaffolding from which to build and organize larger numbers of people across larger locations. Note also, there are Junior Foresters, which the women are happy to have their children join, and gives plausible deniability and access to children.

The U.S. is entering a period of intense competition with China as the government running the world's second-biggest economy becomes ever more tightly controlled by President Xi Jinping, the White House's top official for Asia said Wednesday.
"The period that was broadly described as engagement has come to an end," Kurt Campbell, the U.S. coordinator for Indo-Pacific affairs on the National Security Council, said at an event hosted by Stanford University. U.S. policy toward China will now operate under a "new set of strategic parameters," Campbell said, adding that "the dominant paradigm is going to be competition."

>Independent Order of Foresters
The Independent Order of Foresters is a fraternal organization, now based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and operating under the brand name Foresters Financial
Foresters traces its origin to a British Friendly Society, a mutual organization caring for the sick. The original Foresters groups allegedly banded together for mutual aid and protection in 14th-century England, in or near the ancient royal forests which belonged to the monarchy.[2] Although the older history cannot be proven, there was a society called the Royal Foresters in the 18th century. Membership originally was gained by combat, first with quarterstaffs, then with swords and finally with cudgels, until initiation by combat was abandoned in 1843.[3]
In 1834 the Royal Foresters formed a Friendly Society, the Ancient Order of Foresters (AOF).[4] The IOF in the United States became independent of the AOF in 1874,[5] and as of 2014 operates a separate UK division, Forester Life, based in South London.
The expansion of the Independent Order of Foresters (IOF) into Canada in 1875 is attributed to a prominent doctor and community leader, Oronhyatekha. Of Mohawk descent, born in 1841 at Six Nations near present-day Brantford, Ontario, Oronhyatekha ("Burning Sky") was baptized Peter Martin and later attended Oxford, where he became medical doctor.[6]
>Oronhyatekha and the Prince of Wales?
Oronhyatekha (10 August 1841 - 3 March 1907), ("Burning Sky" or "Burning Cloud" in the Mohawk language, also carried the baptismal name Peter Martin), was a Mohawk physician, scholar, and a unique figure in the history of British colonialism. He was the first known aboriginal Oxford scholar; a successful CEO of a multinational financial institution; a native statesman; an athlete of international standing; and an outspoken champion of the rights of women, children, and minorities.
Oronhyatekha was selected at the age of twenty by the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy (consisting of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora Nations) to give the welcoming address to the Prince of Wales during his visit to the New World.[4] Legend has it that Prince Edward was sufficiently impressed that he urged the young Oronhyatekha to attend the University of Oxford, where he himself had attended,

>What is the Fleur de Lis?
a sylized lilly or lotus flower
>Who is it symbolic of?
French royalty
The fleur-de-lis' symbolic origins with French monarchs may stem from the baptismal lily used in the crowning of King Clovis I.
The symbol has been regarded as a sign of purity ever since antiquity. The Roman Catholic Church adopted the Fleur-de-lis symbol to represent Virgin Mary. When Pope Leo III in 800 crowned Charlemagne as emperor, he is reported to have presented him with a blue banner covered (semé) with golden fleurs-de-lis.
The symbol was later adopted by many European noble families, most notably the French monarchy, to establish an association with the Church.

The rapid growth led the Maccabees to build a second temple in 1904 at the intersection of Huron and Pine Grove avenues. The original temple, built in 1892 at Huron and Bard, was noted for its hive-shaped brass domes. It became the Algonquin Hotel in 1906 and was destroyed in a fire in 2000.
The Woman's Life Insurance Society, as the association is known today, is still based in Port Huron. Janice Whipple, who took over in 1990, is only its sixth president in more than a century.

Trump-Xi Dinner Offers Chance to Avert Deeper U.S.-China Rift
Two sides far apart on trade issues and even hopes for meeting
Trump projects confidence in deal as he ratchets up threats
A year ago, Xi Jinping thought he had Donald Trump all figured out.
The Chinese president had just hosted his American counterpart in Beijing for a summit rich in fanfare. Despite some tensions during the visit, Xi appeared to have steered Trump away from unleashing a withering trade war between the world's two largest economies.
Now, the two leaders are preparing for their first face-to-face meeting in more than twelve months, a high-stakes encounter that could be their last best chance to keep an already costly trade dispute from spiraling into a new and broader cold war. Yet Xi and Trump will walk into their dinner on Saturday in Buenos Aires with very different goals in mind – clouding the prospects for a grand bargain that could ease investors' concerns.

Wolves in the weeds as Beijing's harsh diplomacy backfires
Looking tired and anxious, Beijing's ambassador Cheng Jingye has almost entirely retreated from Canberra's diplomatic social scene. It turns out enemies are everywhere.
WILL GLASGOW - June 12, 2021
1/3
Beijing's man in Canberra, ambassador Cheng Jingye, looked tired and anxious.
There is a lot to worry about in the paranoid Xi Jinping era, especially for a cosmopolitan United Nations specialist like Cheng. For China's diplomats, potential enemies are everywhere, inside and outside their walled compounds. Every encounter is a test of loyalty - and all recorded on their embassy's or consulate's Hikvision surveillance equipment.
"There's a second Cultural Revolution going on," says one senior Canberra-based diplomatic source, who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity.
Once-common motions within the Canberra diplomatic community - such as a new ambassador paying a courtesy visit to their counterpart at the Chinese ambassador's residence in Yarralumla - have now become fraught with risk.
In one such recent exchange, a new ambassador found that a junior Chinese diplomat sat by the worried-looking Chinese ambassador for the whole meeting, taking notes.
A subsequent invitation for a relaxed dinner was rejected. Cheng's secretary cited "Covid" despite Canberra not having had a single domestic case for months.
One fellow ambassador says Cheng, 61, has almost entirely retreated from Canberra's diplomatic social scene.
"In a situation like this, they need to be communicating. But instead they are isolated," the ambassador tells Inquirer, saying the situation was similar at posts around the world.
"When things get difficult, they don't answer. They close communication channels."
Outside Canberra, the ambassador's colleagues in the Chinese Foreign Ministry have called the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, a "running dog", spread a conspiracy theory that the coronavirus was imported to Wuhan by the US army and, in Fiji, concussed a diplomatic representative from Taipei.
That last act of violence was triggered by a cake decoration: the Taiwanese flag, in miniature.
"A lot of this behaviour comes from insecurity," says Peter Martin, the author of a new book called China's Civilian Army, a sometimes disturbing and often hilarious study of PRC diplomacy.
"Individual diplomats find themselves in this very strange position where their country is stronger than it has ever been, but their place in the political system is as tenuous as it has been in decades," the Bloomberg reporter tells Inquirer over the phone from Washington DC, his new base after a long stint in Beijing.
From 'silver fox' to wolf warrior
Things could be worse. During the frenzy of the Cultural Revolution in the late 1960s, Chinese diplomats demonstrated their loyalty to Chairman Mao by beating up German diplomats in the streets. The Czechoslovakian ambassador was detained at an airport.
"Most dramatically, the British mission in the Chinese capital was stormed and torched by Red Guards," Martin writes in his absorbing book.
When protests broke out outside the Chinese embassy in London, young Chinese diplomats engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the protesters. "British television news captured an image of a Chinese diplomat waving an axe," Martin records.
Axes haven't yet reappeared under Xi, but he has overseen a sharp new approach to asserting Chinese interests abroad. Capitals around the world took years to understand the change, which occurred in Beijing just months after Xi was anointed China's President in March 2013.
