A physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with ties to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein is facing disciplinary action for not informing MIT that Epstein was a convicted sex offender.
A majority of members on an MIT panel found that Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Systemsand Physics Seth Lloyd violated the college's conflict of interest policy in connection with donations he received from Epstein, according to an email sent out by college Provost Martin A. Schmidt.
The five-member panel consisted of Professor Rohan Abeyaratne, Institute Professor Daron Acemoglu, Institute Professor Penny Chisholm, Materials Science and Engineering Department Head Jeffrey Grossman and Dean of Science Nergis Mavalvala.
Lloyd accepted donations from Epstein, including two $50,000 contributions in 2012intended to support his work, according to a Goodwin Procter a report released earlier this year. Lloyd did not inform MIT that Epstein was the source of the donations, the report stated.
The college commissioned Goodwin Procter to conduct the investigation looking at "interactions between Jeffrey Epstein and the Institute." MIT's president, L. Rafael Reif, requested the probe in September 2019.
But the MIT panel said Lloyd didn't violate MIT policies in accepting a gift from Epstein roughly 15 years ago and the donation in 2017. They also said they don't believe Lloyd attempted to circumvent the MIT vetting process, nor that he tried to conceal the name of the donor.
"They did conclude, however, that he failed to reveal crucial information about Epstein's background to anyone at MIT," Schmidt said.
The MIT panel submitted its findings to a separate committee, which comprised Dean of Engineering Anantha Chandrakasan, Mechanical Engineering Department Head Evelyn Wang, Physics Department Head Peter Fisher, Mechanical Engineering Associate Department Head Pierre Lermusiaux and Faculty Chair Rick Danheiser.

One of Queen Elizabeth's doctors was fatally struck by a truck as he rode his bicycle to work in London this week, according to a new report.
Dr. Peter Fisher, 67, was on his way to the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine - where he is president of the Faculty of Homeopathy - when the fatal smash-up occurred in High Holborn on Wednesday morning, the Evening Standard reported.
Good Samaritans rushed to give him CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene before 10 a.m.
He had served as the Queen's homeopathic doctor for about 15 years, according to the report. She has been informed of his death, the BBC reported.
"He was much respected as a good doctor who saw homeopathy as complementary to medical care," Sir Marcus Setchell, Her Majesty's former gynecologist, told the Evening Standard. "We are all shocked by his tragic loss."
Greg White, chief executive of the Faculty of Homeopathy at the hospital where Fisher worked, called him "a leader, not just for the faculty but for homeopathy in the UK and worldwide."
"It's no exaggeration to say Peter is an irreplaceable talent," he added. "He truly was a giant in all his fields of endeavor, which included clinician, researcher and academic."
The truck driver for interior building product distribution company CCF remained at the scene, was not arrested and was helping police with their investigation, according to the report.
"We are deeply saddened by yesterday's tragic accident and our thoughts and sympathies are with the family, friends and colleagues of Dr. Fisher at this time," a company spokesperson told the outlet.
Fisher was the eighth cyclist killed in London this year - the fifth who died in a collision with a truck, according to the report.
He was the second well-known doctor killed while riding a bicycle in recent weeks.
Last month, Dr. Mark Hausknecht, 65, a heart doctor who treated former President George H.W. Bush, was gunned down as he biked to work in Houston.
The suspect in the case, Joseph Pappas, committed suicide as police closed in on him earlier this month.

One of Queen Elizabeth II's personal physicians was killed on Wednesday by a truck as he rode his bike to work. Dr. Peter Fisher, 67, an international leader in homeopathic and holistic medicine who had served on the British monarch's medical team for 15 years, was pronounced dead soon after the accident in the central London neighbourhood of Holborn.
Fisher was the director of research at the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (RLHIM), which remembered him on Thursday as "a highly regarded colleague and friend of many at the RLHIM, where he worked for more than 35 years."
The hospital said he "was committed to holistic and compassionate care for his patients."
Fisher was the eighth cyclist to die in London traffic this year. He was killed in a collision involving a truck on national Cycle to Work Day in Britain. According to the BBC the crash was still being investigated, and the truck driver had not been taken into police custody as of Thursday morning.
CBS News partner network BBC News said the queen had been informed of Fisher's death, but there was no immediate reaction from the royal family.
