Mexico on track to have its first Jewish, female president
The polls point to a historical first: Claudia Sheinbaum, currently the frontrunner, could become the country's first Jewish and female president.
The way things stand now, Mexico is headed to elect its first woman president next year. The two leading candidates in the polls for the 2024 election are Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico City's former mayor, and X?chitl G?lvez, a senator representing the center-right opposition bloc.
The polls point to another first: Sheinbaum, currently the frontrunner, could become the country's first Jewish president, too.
Earlier this month, Sheinbaum, 61, was announced as the candidate for the left-wing Morena party, which has been led by the country's outgoing president, Andr?s Manuel L?pez Obrador. Since then, her momentum has only grown - a poll taken by the El Pais newspaper has 47% of voters supporting her, while G?lvez, her closest competitor, notched 30%.
If elected, Sheinbaum would join the ranks of the few Jews outside Israel who have been elected to their country's highest office, including Janet Jagan of Guyana, Ricardo Maduro of Honduras, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski of Peru and Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine.
Here is a primer on Sheinbaum and how her Jewishness has become part of the campaign.
She is a Nobel Prize-winning scientist and political liberal who has beaten back crime.
Born to two science professors in Mexico City, Sheinbaum herself studied physics and became an engineering professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Her research focused on, among other things, energy usage in Mexico's buildings and transportation system. Along with a group of other experts on the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, she would go on to win the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
As Mexico City's head of government, Obrador appointed Sheinbaum as his environmental secretary in 2000. She became a close ally and joined his new left-wing Morena party (named after the country's Catholic patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe) in the early 2010s. In 2015, she was elected mayor of Tlalpan, Mexico City's largest borough, before becoming mayor of the entire city in 2018. She stepped down as mayor this summer to enter the presidential race.

https://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2020/11/15/Perus-interim-President-Manuel-Merino-steps-down-amid-protests/7381605465237/
Nov. 15 (UPI) – Peru's interim President Manuel Merino stepped down Sunday, days after the nation's Congress ousted President Martin Vizcarra.
Merino announced his resignation amid protests over Congress' decision to remove Vizcarra over unproven bribery allegations, saying his cabinet will remain in place until a new leader is selected to avoid a power vacuum.
"At this time, when the country is experiencing one of its biggest political cries, I want the whole country to know that I'm presenting my irrevocable resignation," he said.
Congress said it would convene Sunday evening to select a new replacement.
Congress voted 105-19 to impeach the 57-year-old Vizcarra from office, as he said he didn't agree with the decision but would not contest it.
Vizcarra took office in 2018, vowing to fight corruption, after his predecessor Pedro Pablo Kuczynski resigned a day before a vote on his own impeachment.
The ousting of Vizcarra prompted demonstrations that began in the capital city of Lima, then spread to other cities throughout the nation.
It is unclear if Peruvians would accept Congress' choice to replace Merino, as Vizcarra had become popular during his two years as president and people in the country are largely critical of Congress as many members face investigations for corruption and other crimes.

Peru's Ex-President Dies in Suicide as Police Raid His Home Updated on April 17, 2019, 4:53 PM EDT
- Alan Garcia led country twice before becoming mired in scandal
- Suspected of taking bribe from construction giant Odebrecht
Former Peru President Alan Garcia's suicide with police at his door Wednesday was a deadly turn in an aggressive continental corruption probe that has ensnared four of the nation's former leaders.
The dramatic death of the longtime leftist underscores the scope of the Odebrecht affair, which has spawned bribery probes across Latin America and destabilized governments, above all in Peru. The Andean nation has endured grinding poverty and a stubborn Maoist insurgency. Its reckoning with graft at the highest levels could continue decades of dysfunction, or be a long first step toward cleaning up its government.
Garcia, a towering 69-year-old nicknamed Crazy Horse, served as president twice, living in exile between his administrations after accusations of graft. He returned only after the statute of limitations expired. On Wednesday, he was facing the prospect of prison for the first time.
"President Garcia made the decision of a free man,'' Mauricio Mulder, a lawmaker with Garcia's Apra party, told reporters outside Casimiro Ulloa hospital. "For we Apristas, who are his family, it's an act of dignity and honor in the face of a fascist, sick, persecution.''
President Martin Vizcarra, whom Garcia had blamed for the investigations, confirmed his death in a tweet. "My condolences to his family and loved ones," he wrote.
Garcia was Peru's president between 1985 and 1990 and again from 2006 to 2011. A populist, he presided over an economic collapse in his first term before embracing free-market policies in his second term, and the country enjoyed rapid growth. But he was swept up in the Odebrecht scandal and investigators believed he had been bought off by the Brazilian construction giant.
Garcia unsuccessfully sought asylum in the Uruguayan Embassy in November after a court barred him from leaving the country for 18 months during the investigation of a rail contract Odebrecht won during his second administration.
"I never asked for money or sold public works," he said Tuesday on Twitter. "Those who accused me are the true corrupt. I believe in history. Others sell themselves, not me."
This next day, prosecutors and police came to his Lima home. Garcia went into his bedroom on the second floor, saying he was going to call his lawyer, said Interior Minister Carlos Moran. A few minutes later a shot was heard.
Probes into campaign donations and bribes Odebrecht paid have embroiled the country's executive and stalled major infrastructure projects, slowing its economy. The investigation, dubbed Operation Carwash, started in Brazil and has also ensnared members of the business and political elite in that nation, the region's biggest economy. Michel Temer last month became the second former Brazilian president to be arrested as part of Carwash.
The company has admitted to bribing officials across Latin America and in 2016 agreed to pay the largest corruption penalty ever levied by global authorities. The scandal dealt a heavy blow to impunity that prevailed in the region for so long, said Thomaz Favaro, a Sao-Paulo based director at Control Risks, a consulting firm. Peru's iteration of the Odebrecht probe may gone deeper than that of any other nation, he said.
Authorities there have barred former President Ollanta Humala from leaving the country, and the government is seeking the extradition of former President Alejandro Toledo from the U.S. A court last week ordered the detention of former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski for 10 days. Prosecutors have requested a separate court order to jail Kuczynski for 36 months as they prepare laundering charges. He has denied wrongdoing.

Peru's former President Alan García has shot himself as police came to arrest him.
Casimiro Ulloa hospital in the capital, Lima, said he was in surgery where he was being treated for "a bullet wound to his head".
Mr García is accused of taking bribes from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht - claims he has repeatedly denied.
Officers had been sent to arrest him in connection with the allegations.
Health minister Zulema Tomás said Mr García's condition was "very serious and critical", and that he had to be resuscitated after suffering three cardiac arrests.
"Let's pray to God to give him strength," the former president's lawyer Erasmo Reyna reportedly told journalists at the hospital.
Brazil's Odebrecht corruption scandal
'The largest foreign bribery case in history'
Mr García served as president from 1985 to 1990 and again from 2006 to 2011.
Investigators say he took bribes from Odebrecht during his second term in office, linked to a metro line building project in the capital.
Odebrecht has admitted paying almost $30m (£23m) in bribes in Peru since 2004.
But Mr García says he is the victim of political persecution, writing in a tweet on Tuesday that there is "no clue or evidence" against him.

What is the Odebrecht scandal?
Odebrecht is a Brazilian construction giant behind major infrastructure projects around the world, including venues for the 2016 Olympics and 2014 World Cup in its home country.
But under the glare of anti-corruption investigators the company admitted paying bribes in more than half of the countries in Latin America, as well as in Angola and Mozambique in Africa.
Investigators say Odebrecht bribed officials or electoral candidates in exchange for lucrative building contracts.
The corruption scandal has brought down politicians throughout Latin America.
How is Peru affected?
Peru's four most recent presidents are all being investigated for alleged corruption, with a fifth - Alberto Fujimori - serving a prison sentence for corruption and human rights abuses.
Ex-leader Pedro Pablo Kuczynski was taken to hospital with high blood pressure on Wednesday just days after his own arrest in connection with Odebrecht charges.
And the current leader of the opposition, Keiko Fujimori, is also in pre-trial detention on charges of taking $1.2m (£940,000) in bribes from Odebrecht.
In October, an opinion poll by Datum showed 94% of Peruvians believed the level of corruption was either high or very high in their country.
The scandal embroiling Peru's presidents
Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, in office 2016-2018, resigned over a vote-buying scandal and detained last week
Ollanta Humala, in office 2011-2016, accused of taking bribes from Odebrecht to bankroll his election campaign, in pre-trial detention in Peru
Alan García, in office 2006-2011, suspected of taking kickbacks from Odebrecht, sought asylum in Uruguay's Lima embassy but had his request denied
Alejandro Toledo, in office 2001-2006, accused of taking millions of dollars in bribes from Odebrecht, currently a fugitive in the US

Former Peruvian president Alan Garcia SHOOTS HIMSELF moments after arrest
Former Peruvian president Alan Garcia has reportedly shot himself in the head as police arrived at his home to arrest him. The ex-president was rushed to hospital, and his condition is currently unknown.
The former leader entered his bedroom after noticing police officers at his door, La Republica reported. After shooting himself in the head, Garcia was taken to a hospital trauma unit.
Garcia, who served two terms as president of Peru, is under investigation for bribery. Garcia is one of more than 230 people across Latin America investigated in a corruption case centered on Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht.
Another corrupt ex Latin American president propped up by Washington as leader of 'regional democracy', shoots himself in the neck while being detained on corruption charges. I present, Alan Garcia of Peru: https://t.co/5Mlk2APstN
- Eva Golinger (@evagolinger) April 17, 2019
The former leader sought asylum in Uruguay last November, after a judge barred him from leaving Peru for 18 months. The asylum request was denied, and a judge in Lima ordered his detention on Tuesday.
Prosecutors say Garcia took bribes from Odebrecht in exchange for a lucrative public transport contract in Lima. Garcia denies the charge, and claims he is being politically persecuted.
Peru's last five ex-presidents have all served jail time or are under investigation for corruption. Garcia's successor Pedro Pablo Kuczynski is also being investigated for his alleged involvement in the Odebrecht scandal. Prosecutors are currently seeking to extend Kuczynski's detention until he can be brought to trial.

Peru's former president Kuczynski ordered to 10 days in jail
LIMA (Reuters) - A judge ordered Peru's former president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski to spend 10 days in jail and authorized a search of his properties in connection with a money-laundering probe into Brazilian builder Odebrecht, according to a judicial resolution. Police officers were outside Kuczynski's home in Lima's financial district early on Wednesday, a Reuters witness said.
Kuczynski's attorney Nelson Miranda called the order "arbitrary" in broadcast comments on local TV and said he would file an appeal. Kuczynski has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and had vowed to cooperate with prosecutors investigating Odebrecht's ties to local politicians. An 80-year-old former Wall Street banker who once held U.S. citizenship, Kuczynski narrowly won the 2016 presidential election but resigned a year ago in the face of near-certain impeachment by the opposition-controlled Congress. Kuczynski has blamed his ouster on a plot by opposition party Popular Force, whose leader Keiko Fujimori was jailed before trial in connection with Odebrecht last year on charges that she denies.
Peruvian judges have authorized several politicians, including two other former presidents, to be jailed before trial since Odebrecht admitted in late 2017 that it had secured lucrative government contracts across Latin America by bribing high-ranking politicians. In Peru, criminal suspects can be jailed without trial for up to three years if prosecutors can show they have evidence that would likely lead to a conviction and that the suspects would likely try to flee or obstruct their work.
"It's an abusive detention order," Gilbert Violeta, a lawmaker in the political party Kuczynski formed, said in an interview with local TV channel Canal N. "There's no flight risk."

A court in Peru has reversed a pardon granted to the country's ex-president, Alberto Fujimori.
Fujimori was pardoned in December on health grounds, nine years after being found guilty of having links to a death squad and two massacres.
But a court ordered him back to jail after a victims' group won an appeal against the decision, made by then-president, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.
Fujimori, who led Peru in the 1990s, will fight the ruling, his lawyer said.
His daughter Keiko, who leads the main opposition Popular Force party, told reporters the decision was "inhuman" and "unjust".
Most Peruvians had assumed Fujimori, now 80, would be in prison for the rest of his life after being sentenced to 25 years in 2009, having been convicted of ordering the killings of 25 people by a government-backed death squad during Peru's internal conflict.
But in December 2017, he was taken from prison to a hospital in the capital, Lima, because of health concerns; he was suffering from low blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythm.
Mr Kuczynski, who resigned in March over a vote-buying scandal, gave him a pardon the same month, prompting protests in Lima - even as Fujimori's supporters celebrated outside the city hospital where he was being treated.
The pardon was widely seen as part of a political deal. Mr Kuczynski had narrowly avoided impeachment, with the support of Fujimori's supporters, three days earlier.
Carlos Rivera, who is representing victims' family members, said the decision to reverse the pardon "re-establishes the right to justice for the family members of the victims".
Fujimori is admired by many in Peru for ruthlessly crushing Maoist rebels in the 1990s, ending a conflict that cost tens of thousands of lives.
But his critics say he is a corrupt dictator who was rightfully jailed for ordering the killings of innocent peasants.

Q Research General #925: Deep State Panic Edition
Anon on previous thread said 2 presidents resigned today. One was Peru's president. I didn't know who the other one was, so I did a duck search on "president resigns". I'm sure everyone is aware, but here is a non-comprehensive list of heads of state that have resigned in recent months:
Robert Mugabe–Zimbabwe–11/21/17
Jacob Zuma–South Africa–2/14/18
Ameena Gurib-Fakim–Mauritius–3/17/18
Htin Kyaw–Myanmar–3/21/18
Pedro Pablo Kuczynski–Peru–3/21/2018
5 in 5 months seems like a lot. Other "presidents" who have resigned:
John Skipper–ESPN–12/17
Joel Seligman–U. of Rochester–1/11/18
Lou Anna Simon–Mich. State University–1/24/2018
Wayne Pacelle–U.S. Humane Society–2/2/18
Chialin Chang–Smartphone President, HTC–2/14/18
Raj Nair–Ford Motors, North America–2/21/18
Trevor Edwards–Nike–3/16/18
Shantaram Naik–President of Goa Congress, India–3/20/18
Salah al-Sayadi–Minister of State, Yemen–3/21/2018
