Paul Scurrah resigns as Virgin Australia chief executive
Virgin Australia CEO Paul Scurrah will step down from his role after a year of turmoil at the struggling airline.
Paul Scurrah has resigned as chief executive officer and managing director of Virgin Australia, following a year of turmoil for Australia's second airline.
He will be replaced by former Jetstar boss Jayne Hrdlicka when the airline is handed over fully to US private equity firm Bain Capital in early November.
Mr Scurrah will remain in his role until then, the airline's administrator Deloitte said in a statement to the ASX today.
Deloitte said it believed Bain would maintain Virgin Australia as a full-service airline, despite speculation Mr Scurrah had clashed with Bain over its intention to turn it into a low-cost carrier.
Sources have told the Australian Financial Review other executives may follow Mr Scurrah's exit.
The sale of Virgin Australia to Bain was finalised last month after the debt-ridden airline slumped into voluntary administration in April.
The airline has since announced it would streamline its fleet and axe budget subsidiary Tigerair, but keep its two-class cabin structure - business class and economy - and return business lounges when travel demand picked up.

Virgin Australia to slash 3,000 jobs for slimmed post-coronavirus operations
Virgin Australia has revealed plans to make about a third of its workforce redundant, with approximately 3,000 jobs expected to go under new owners Bain Capital, while 6,000 staff remain.
The private equity firm's plan for the airline sees the end of the Tiger Australia brand, although Virgin Australia said it would retain the air operator certificate so it could revive a low-cost carrier when the domestic holiday travel market fully recovered.
A key part of the plan is to operate an all Boeing 737 mainline fleet, with other aircraft types restricted to regional routes and charters.
This will mean removing ATRs, Boeing 777s, Airbus A330s and Tiger's Airbus A320s from the airline's fleet.
Virgin Australia chief executive Paul Scurrah said the airline had no choice but to shrink to survive amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Demand for domestic and short-haul international travel is likely to take at least three years to return to pre-COVID-19 levels, with the real chance it could be longer, which means as a business we must make changes to ensure the Virgin Australia Group is successful in this new world," he said in a statement.
"Working with Bain Capital, we will accelerate our plan to deliver a strong future in a challenging domestic and global aviation market.
"We believe that over time we can set the foundations to grow Virgin Australia again and re-employ many of the highly skilled Virgin Australia team."

Bain Capital agrees to buy struggling Virgin Australia
U.S. private equity group Bain Capital said on Friday it has agreed with the administrator of Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd to buy Australia's second-biggest airline for an undisclosed sum.
Bain's bid was chosen over a rival offer from Cyrus Capital Partners and a recaptalisation proposal put forward by Virgin Australia bondholders, administrator Deloitte said. Deloitte said it was not yet possible to estimate the return to creditors and did not expect any return to shareholders. An update on the return will be provided ahead of a creditor's meeting in August, it said.
The deal will need to be approved by 50% of creditors by value and 50% by number to be finalised. Bain is using private equity as well as its distressed and special situation funds for the deal, according to Deloitte, which said the deal provided a "significant" injection of capital into the airline to help recapitalise and position it for the future. "Under our ownership we will strengthen Virgin's regional services and ensure the airline emerges offering exceptional experiences at great value while continuing to service business travellers, as well as those of us travelling for fun or to visit loved ones," Mike Murphy, an Australia-based managing director at Bain, said in a statement. Virgin Australia entered administration in April owing nearly A$7 billion ($4.82 billion) to creditors but is viewed as an attractive investment given the Australian domestic aviation market duopoly it shares with larger rival Qantas Airways Ltd .
Cyrus on Friday morning said it had pulled out of the bidding, citing unwillingness on the part of Deloitte to engage in meaningful talks about its offer. The Bain proposal supports Virgin Australia's current management team led by Chief Executive Paul Scurrah and its improvement plan for the airline, and has committed to the retention of thousands of jobs, Deloitte said in a statement, thanking Cyrus for participating in the bidding process. "We believe Bain Capital's proposal offers the best possible future for Virgin Australia, its employees and its customers," Scurrah said in a statement.
Virgin Australia has around 9,000 employees. Qantas on Thursday said it would cut more than 20% of its 29,000-strong workforce due to a bleak international travel outlook due to border closures associated with the coronavirus outbreak. Virgin Australia has a smaller international business than Qantas and is more exposed to the domestic market, where some state travel restrictions are being lifted and airlines are adding capacity.

Q Research General 11355: BREAKING: Kim ROcKs ON dition
"Australia's second-biggest airline Virgin Australia entered administration following its failure to secure a A$1.4bn ($886m) bailout from the government, becoming the nation's highest-profile corporate victim of the coronavirus crisis.
The carrier said on Tuesday that it had appointed Deloitte to look for investment to recapitalise the debt-laden group, which is the main competitor to Qantas Airways in Australia with just over 30 per cent market share.
Virgin said it would continue to operate scheduled flights and would retain existing management led by Paul Scurrah, chief executive, during the restructuring.
The collapse of Virgin is the biggest shake-up in Australian aviation since Ansett Australia went bust in 2001, leaving Qantas with a near monopoly. Singapore Airlines, Etihad, HNA and China's Nanshan Group each own about 20 per cent while Richard Branson's Virgin Group holds 10 per cent."
