Lazzaro, an occasional Fox News guest who flaunted his wealthy lifestyle on social media, was indicted on five counts of sex trafficking of a minor, one count of attempting to do so, and three counts of obstruction of justice. The FBI confirmed its agents had arrested Lazzaro in Minneapolis this morning. And the indictment was unsealed in federal court Thursday afternoon during his initial appearance in federal court in St. Paul, Minnesota, which took place over a video conference.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Becky R. Thorson ordered that Lazzaro remain jailed until a court hearing next week, after prosecutors claimed six victims had asked for additional protection from Lazzaro.

"It's their strong wish that the United States proceed with a recommendation of detention," Thorson said of the alleged victims.

The indictment accuses Lazzaro of having "recruited" at least five underage victims for paid sex between May and December last year, and trying to entice a sixth. It also says he "knowingly and intentionally interfered" with the investigation as it closed in on him.

The feds have yet to arrest a second person under investigation, who is mentioned as a co-conspirator in the indictment but not identified.

The FBI raided Lazzaro's luxury condo in mid-December last year, and agents had sought evidence concerning whom he had brought home into the Hotel Ivy residences in downtown Minneapolis, according to three sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Law enforcement served the condo building's management company with a search warrant seeking Lazzaro's bank records and video surveillance footage a week before the raid, according to a person with direct knowledge. The search warrant appears in federal court records but remains sealed. The prosecutors working on this case did not return phone calls seeking further detail.

When asked about the investigation last month, the U.S. Attorney's Office declined to provide any information about the matter. The FBI at the time would only confirm that it had conducted "court-authorized law enforcement activity at that location" this past December.

In a phone conversation with this reporter last month, Lazzaro confirmed that his apartment had been searched in December but did not acknowledge the nature of the investigation, simply claiming that "someone made a false accusation against me."

"There's no charges, no case, nothing political," he said, adding that the "matter was regarding a totally unrelated incident that's now almost resolved, essentially."

Lazzaro claimed that his defense attorney in this case had subcontracted the prominent lawyer Alan Dershowitz, a one-time Harvard Law School professor who has advised former President Donald Trump and ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. However, Dershowitz denied that to The Daily Beast.

"It's just not true," Dershowitz said.

The 30-year-old entrepreneur served as the campaign manager for GOP candidate Lacy Johnson, who ran an unsuccessful bid in 2020 to unseat Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar.

Johnson told The Daily Beast that his former campaign manager never told him about the raid or the investigation. Johnson said Lazzaro never discussed his personal dating life.

"I don't know that side of Tony. He's young, he's got money, and... that tends to attract females," Johnson said.

Johnson expressed dismay that he first heard details about the criminal probe from a journalist, as opposed to his trusted adviser.

The year at home is part of a three-year sentence of probation. She also received a $900 fine.

ITTLE ROCK, Ark. - An Arizona adoption attorney is facing several federal charges in Arkansas after being arrested in California Tuesday evening.

Paul Petersen, who is an assessor in Maricopa County and an attorney that practices law in Arizona, Utah and Arkansas, reportedly "devised a scheme to defraud and obtain money and property from unknowing adoptive parents and others."

According to the Department of Justice, Petersen would pay pregnant Marsallese women to travel to Arkansas and put their babies up for adoption. He allegedly bought airline tickets and had them hide the motive to travel from Republic of Marshall Islands and United States authorities.

"In furtherance of this scheme, Petersen caused adoption case files to be opened that were supported by documents containing fraudulent material false statements," the DOJ press release stated.

A former Arizona politician who admitted running an illegal adoption scheme in three states involving women from the Marshall Islands was sentenced in Arkansas to six years in federal prison.

The sentence issued Tuesday to former Maricopa County Assessor Paul Petersen is the first of three punishments he'll face for arranging adoptions prohibited by an international compact. Everyone in town knew that William Jordan Flake had two wives. Flake, who helped establish the town of Snowflake, came to Arizona when members of the Mormon Church still practiced polygamy. However, the practice was frowned on outside the church, and a crackdown forced some church members, such as Miles Park Romney, great grandfather of former presidential candidate Mitt, to flee to Mexico. Others were sent to jail.

Flake stayed in Arizona and surveyed the legal landscape. A few church members, who had been tried before him, pleaded not guilty and were sent to prison in Michigan for three and a half years, according to an article in The Journal of Arizona History. So, Flake pleaded guilty and told the judge about his family. He was sentenced to 6 months at Yuma Territorial Prison.

Locals in the eastern Arizona town say that the day Flake was arrested, he invited the marshal in for dinner, and introduced him to both of his wives. They also say that, while in prison, he tried to be a positive influence on the younger inmates.

He was trusted by the prison officials, and sometimes took the Superintendent's children fishing in the Colorado River. The Journal of Arizona History article lists a number of entries from Flake's diary. There is no mention of fishing, but he does say he has more privileges than other prisoners.

"Some of the cons think it is worse to have more than one wife than it is to kill," he wrote.

He was released June 5, 1885, and came home to a warm welcome.

But what IS NOT public, until now, is Petersen's curious association with GOP critics of President Trump, including former US Sen. Jeff Flake, late Sen. John McCain, and Sen. Mitt Romney among others. Petersen also campaigned for and is friends with Arizona Gov. Goug Ducey and other politicians, according to records and sources.

Petersen's association with Flake, who recently resigned from the Senate, is perhaps most curious. Petersen's alleged schemes involved securing pregnant women from the Marshall Islands. Flake is somewhat famous for his much-hyped personal trips to the Marshall Islands. Flake has trekked to the Marshall Islands at least four times, including once to film a reality survival show while he was in the Senate.

Petersen's reference in 2013 to being invited on a Marshall Island trip WITH Flake is something that promises to peak the interest of state and federal investigators.

Petersen, age 44, pleaded guilty to illegally paying pregnant women from the Marshall Islands to come to the United States to give up their babies for adoption. He was indicted in October for running a human trafficking operation in three states: Arkansas, Arizona and Utah.

Petersen pleaded guilty last week to charges in Arizona and Utah.

According to the agreement, an investigation into the criminal activities of Petersen has been going on for several years. During the course of the investigation, law enforcement determined that Petersen, among other things, orchestrated the travel of several pregnant women from the Republic of the Marshall Islands to the Western District of Arkansas. The purpose of this travel was for Petersen to arrange adoption of their children by families living in the United States.

Petersen is a licensed attorney who practices law in Arizona, Utah, and Arkansas. Agents discovered that Petersen used credit card accounts that he controlled to purchase airline tickets for several women, all citizens of the RMI who did not have official authorization to enter or reside in the United States, to travel from the RMI to the Western District of Arkansas. This travel arranged and funded by Petersen was in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act because the women were all citizens of the RMI and were not eligible for admission into the United States under the terms of the Compact.

According to State of Arkansas Circuit Court records, the families who adopted these children paid Petersen significant sums of money for him to act as a legal facilitator of the adoptions. Finally, also according to the Plea Agreement, witness interviews conducted by the agents investigating Petersen revealed that it was part of the conspiracy that Petersen's co-conspirators offered the women $10,000 to induce them to travel to the United States and consent to the adoptions.

A former Arizona politician pleaded guilty in Utah on Friday to human smuggling and other charges in an illegal adoption scheme that stretched across three states and involved pregnant women brought illegally from the Marshall Islands.

Paul Petersen, a Republican who served county assessor in metro Phoenix for six years until his resignation in January, has also struck a plea agreement with Arizona prosecutors on state Medicaid-fraud charges. He's expected to enter a similar plea in Arkansas this week.

Petersen was charged with illegally paying women from the Pacific island nation to come to the United States to give up their babies in at least 70 adoption cases in Arizona, Utah and Arkansas over three years.

Even though Raquel Petersen has filed for divorce, she is defending her husband. "I think someone wanted to make an example of him; I don't believe he did anything wrong," she said.

According to court paperwork, Paul Petersen faces more than 60 felony charges in three states. In Arizona, he's accused of illegally arranging for 28 pregnant women to fly here from the Marshall Islands and live in housing he owned.

Raquel explained to Arizona's Family how the criminal case against her husband has affected her and their kids.

Until a few months ago, she was the obscure wife of a relatively unknown politician. Today, she's best known as the silent woman behind the dark sunglasses walking through the airport, hand-in-hand with her husband, former Maricopa County Assessor Paul Petersen, following his stunning arrest on accusations of human trafficking.

"I know I don't garner that much sympathy. I know people look at me and say, 'She was either an idiot, or she was complicit,' but I only saw happy families," she said.

## Arizona politician's alleged adoption aide pleads guilty

Phoenix - A woman accused of helping a metro Phoenix politician in what authorities have called an illegal adoption scheme involving women from the Marshall Islands pleaded guilty Thursday to helping arrange benefits from Arizona's Medicaid program for expecting mothers even though the women didn't live in the state.

Lynwood Jennet, 46, assisted the birth mothers in applying for the health benefits at the direction of Maricopa County Assessor Paul Petersen, who also works as an adoption attorney, authorities said.

Officials have said 28 Marshallese women gave birth in the Phoenix area as part of the scheme, costing Arizona $800,000 in health care expenses, and that their children were put up for adoption through Petersen.

Jennet also was accused of serving as a point of contact for people in the Marshall Islands who looked for pregnant women interested in coming to the United States to give up their children for adoption.

Jennet's plea deal to charges of fraud and conspiracy calls for two to four years in prison and the repayment of the $800,000, though the repayment could be shared with Petersen if he's eventually convicted on similar charges. Prosecutors and defense attorneys declined to say whether Jennet will testify against Petersen.

Peterson, a Republican, has denied the charges and is fighting to keep his political post leading the agency that determines property values in Maricopa County, Arizona's most populous.

Investigators have said Jennet relayed information about birth mothers to Petersen, who bought the women passports and plane tickets to Phoenix.

Petersen faces criminal charges in Arizona, Utah and Arkansas as part of the alleged scheme involving 70 adoption cases.

He faces human smuggling charges in Utah and Arkansas and is accused of defrauding Arizona's Medicaid system by submitting false applications on the behalf of the women.

Authorities have said the women who went to Utah to give birth received little to no prenatal care. Authorities also said Petersen and associates took away passports from the pregnant women while they were in the U.S. to assert more control over them.

Petersen has pleaded not guilty to the charges in Arizona and Arkansas, though he hasn't yet entered a plea in Utah.

His attorneys have said Petersen ran a legal adoption practice and has been vilified before his side of the story comes out.

Kurt Altman, the attorney defending Petersen on the Arizona charges, declined to say what his client's defense would be on the charges he defrauded the state's Medicaid system.

Marshall Islands citizens have been prohibited from traveling to the U.S. for adoption purposes since 2003.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors put Petersen on a 120-day unpaid suspension after the charges emerged. He he is fighting to be reinstated and his agency's website still prominently features his picture and name.

The county attorney commissioned an investigation into Peterson that is expected to be completed before the end of this year and the board of supervisors is expected to use it to decide whether to maintain or end Petersen's suspension.

Court documents say Paul Petersen arranged travel for pregnant women from the Republic of the Marshall Islands to Arizona to give up their children. Maricopa County Assessor Paul Petersen has been indicted in an international adoption fraud scheme that involves human smuggling, sale of children and communications fraud, multiple state attorneys general confirmed Tuesday evening. The Arizona Attorney General's office did not provide additional details but said it will hold a news conference Wednesday morning to talk about the charges the elected Maricopa County official faces in multiple states. A release from the Utah Attorney General's Office says Petersen was arrested in California Tuesday evening. The Utah Attorney General said it is charging Petersen with human smuggling, sale of a child and communications fraud.

According to Arizona court documents, Petersen-an adoption lawyer licensed in Utah and Arizona-and Lynwood Jennet helped pregnant women travel from the Republic of the Marshall Islands in the central Pacific Ocean to Arizona to give up their children for adoption. The court documents say the women returned directly to the Marshall Islands in several instances. The Utah Attorney General's Office said Petersen also transported more than 40 pregnant Marshallese women into Utah over the last three years.

It's funny how the article about the woman arrested for helping Paul Peterson traffick children doesn't mention that his office is just a block or two from the Mormon temple in Mesa and that he started this scheme through his mission with the LDS church. It seems the church has finally decided to comment on it.

Officials have said 28 Marshallese women gave birth in the Phoenix area as part of the scheme, costing Arizona $800,000 in health care expenses, and that their children were put up for adoption through Petersen.

Jennet also was accused of serving as a point of contact for people in the Marshall Islands who looked for pregnant women interested in coming to the United States to give up their children for adoption.

Jennet's plea deal to charges of fraud and conspiracy calls for two to four years in prison and the repayment of the $800,000, though the repayment could be shared with Petersen if he's eventually convicted on similar charges. Prosecutors and defense attorneys declined to say whether Jennet will testify against Petersen.

Peterson, a Republican, has denied the charges and is fighting to keep his political post leading the agency that determines property values in Maricopa County, Arizona's most populous.

Investigators have said Jennet relayed information about birth mothers to Petersen, who bought the women passports and plane tickets to Phoenix.

Petersen faces criminal charges in Arizona, Utah and Arkansas as part of the alleged scheme involving 70 adoption cases.

He faces human smuggling charges in Utah and Arkansas and is accused of defrauding Arizona's Medicaid system by submitting false applications on the behalf of the women.

Authorities have said the women who went to Utah to give birth received little to no prenatal care. Authorities also said Petersen and associates took away passports from the pregnant women while they were in the U.S. to assert more control over them.
