Will 'freedom convoys' escalate further in Europe?
The situation with Canada-inspired trucker protests is particularly delicate in France because of the upcoming election
Paul Nuttall
Paul A. Nuttall is a historian, author and a former politician. He was a Member of the European Parliament between 2009 and 2019 and was a prominent campaigner for Brexit
The 'Freedom Convoy' has well and truly arrived in Europe. Inspired by the protests in Canada, those opposed to mask mandates and Covid passports have descended on Paris and caused a day of disruption on Saturday, resulting in tear gas being fired and over 50 arrests. The protesters now plan to move on to Brussels for an even larger Europe-wide demonstration.
Unlike in Canada, the authorities in France, which encounter regular protests, were more prepared. The French police made it clear that those found to be blocking roads would be fined 4,500 euro, and over 7,000 officers were deployed to strategic toll booths to prevent the truckers from entering the city. But this did not deter those determined to protest against President Emmanuel Macron's Covid rules, which were brought into force in January. Indeed, convoys travelled from as far as Toulouse, Le Mans, Nice, and other cities, to converge on Paris.
Although the French police claimed that they had prevented at least 500 vehicles from entering the city and had handed out 300 fines, around 3,000 vehicles of the 'Freedom Convoy' managed to make it into the centre of Paris and block the Champs Elysees.
But in the grand scheme of things, what does this all mean? There can be no doubt that a sizeable portion of Europeans are frustrated by the restrictive Covid policies of their governments, and some are prepared to act. The situation, however, is politically more delicate in France than anywhere else, as the presidential election is due to take place in April.
That alone helps explain why President Macron has been relatively restrained in his denunciation of the protests, merely admitting that there was "fatigue" linked to the Covid outbreak and calling "for the utmost calm." This represents a sharp change in tack from Macron, who only last month said that he wanted to "p**s off" those who refused the vaccination and were opposed to his Covid passport scheme. It seems now that he is getting his wish, he probably regrets his previous bravado.

EU's Juncker celebrates Marxist totalitarianism
The ideology Marx gave rise to killed tens of millions of innocents. Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, illustrates his own moral blindness and the bankruptcy of the EU itself as he celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx. Thank goodness Britain will soon be rid of this awful institution
The evil ideology known as communism left a track record of unimaginable horror. Experts estimate that 100 million people were killed
Some were murdered. Other starved to death because of the pervasive economic failure of communism.
Yet there are dupes and apologists who overlook all this death and misery.
One of them is Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Commission. A few days from now, this über-bureaucrat will help celebrate the 200th birthday of Karl Marx.
"The European Commission President will travel to Trier, Germany, where he will give a speech to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth. ...The Commission President will give a speech at the opening ceremony of the Karl Marx exhibition in the city. ...The chief eurocrat's trip has received critics, who have suggested the 63-year-old forgetting how Marx's "warped ideology" led to millions of deaths across the world. Ukip MEP and the party's former leader Paul Nuttall said: "It is appalling that Jean-Claude Juncker feels it necessary to commemorate a man whose ideology - Marxism/Communism - led to more than 100 million deaths.
"...Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski..., who as a seven-year-old boy fled to Britain with his family from the Communist regime in Poland, said Mr Juncker should reject any invitations to commemorate the event. He said: "I think it's in very poor taste we have to remember that Marxism was all about ripping power and individual means away from people and giving to State. "Marxism led to the killing of millions around the world as it allowed a small band of fanatics to suppress the people we must learn the lessons from this and share with our children."'
How disgusting. And let's not forget that communism is still claiming victims in places such as Cuba and North Korea.
Here's the part of the story that caused my jaw to drop.
"A commission spokeswoman defending Mr Juncker's visit... She said: ..."I think that nobody can deny that Karl Marx is a figure who shaped history in one way or the other."
In that case, why not celebrate Hitler's birthday as well?

Another ex-UKIP leader jumps ship over Tommy Robinson appointment - report
UKIP MEP and former leader, Paul Nuttall, is the latest high profile figure after Nigel Farage to quit the party over the appointment of far-right activist Tommy Robinson in an advisory role.
Nuttall, who sits in the European Parliament for North West England, said: "The association with Tommy Robinson will simply appall many moderate Brexit voters and inevitably be detrimental to the cause."
"Putting Tommy Robinson front and centre, whilst Brexit is in the process of being betrayed is, in my view, a catastrophic error," he added.
"To conflate Brexit and Robinson at this crucial moment is to put the eurosceptic cause in danger and I cannot and will not be party to that."

UKIP Says Anti-Extremism Manifesto is 'Similar' to Trump Policies
The UK Independence Party (UKIP) have launched a new interim manifesto, taking a hard line against radical Islamic terrorism, which they say has "similarities" with the policies of U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
The manifesto also proposes housing radical Islamists in separate prisons to stop them spreading extremism, and introducing special security screening for immigrants from some terror-linked states.
One paragraph states: "UKIP will end mass uncontrolled immigration, and under a security-based screening policy we restrict any limited migration from Islamic countries to those people we can be sure, as far as possible, do not follow a literalist and extremist interpretation of Islam."
Questioned on if the policy emulated those of President Trump, a UKIP spokesman said it was "entirely homegrown" and would apply to countries such as Iran.
But he told Sky News: "Although there are similarities, there has been no conscious aping of the president of America's policies." Like President Trump, UKIP denies the policy represented a "Muslim ban," with the spokesman insisting this is "clear from the wording".
Elements of Britain's mainstream media have characterised the new manifesto as a "lurch" to the right for UKIP.
The document also says "UKIP will legislate to ban the overseas funding of mosques and imams," something past leader Paul Nuttall promised to do, but did not include in the 2017 manifesto because there was insufficient time to research the policy.
The new, more hard-line manifesto also proposes extra protections for free speech, rolling back "hate crime" laws that police speech, and scrapping some "equalities" legislation that allows the BBC and other organisations to openly discriminate against white people.
It takes a strong like on grooming gangs, too. It reads: "The systematic and industrialised sexual abuse of under-age and vulnerable young people is one of the greatest social scandals in English history.
"A scandal not just because it happened but because the responsible authorities swept it under the carpet for decades."
Adding: "It is now accepted that one of the key factors that drove the cover up of this phenomenon was adherence by the authorities to political correctness and the fear of identifying the vast majority of the perpetrators as Muslims."

Canadian-Muslim author and commentator Tarek Fatah noted that after Ms Shahdady's infant son received a life-saving heart transplant, relatives said that she had "opened up".
"She threw away her burqa. For a while she wore the hijab, then she threw away the hijab. She joined Facebook and organized a website called Balouch Entertainment. She was openly showing her reaction against the mullahs and fanaticism."
American anti-Islamisation campaigner Pamela Geller, former UK Independence Party leader Paul Nuttall, and Australian anti-mass migration senator Pauline Hanson have all called for the ban on the Islamic garment on security grounds in their respective countries, while the garment has already been banned on grounds of social cohesion in France, Denmark, and Austria, amongst others in Europe.
