Canadian minister quits as political crisis deepens for Trudeau
David Ljunggren
3 Min Read
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Veterans Affairs Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould quit on Tuesday amid news reports that she was pressured to go easy on a major firm last year when she was justice minister, a development that deepened a political crisis for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just months ahead of an election.

Wilson-Raybould, who did not give any reasons for her resignation, said in a letter to Trudeau she was quitting "with a heavy heart," adding that "I am aware that many Canadians wish for me to speak on matters that have been in the media over the past week."
The Globe and Mail reported that people in Trudeau's office tried to pressure Wilson-Raybould last year to help construction company SNC-Lavalin Group Inc avoid a corruption trial when she was justice minister.
Wilson-Raybould, who the Globe and Mail said had ignored the pressure, was demoted from the justice ministry last month. Trudeau said on Monday that he had full confidence in her and that her presence in cabinet spoke for itself.
Trudeau's office said the prime minister would stick to previously announced plans to speak to reporters later on Tuesday in Winnipeg.
The resignation is the second blow for Trudeau in two days over the affair. Mario Dion, Canada's independent ethics commissioner, said on Monday he was probing allegations of possible wrongdoing by senior officials.
In a hint that the situation could grow more complicated for Trudeau, Wilson-Raybould has retained former Supreme Court Justice Thomas Cromwell to advise her on how much she can say about the SNC-Lavalin case. Cromwell declined an interview request.
"This is bigger trouble for the government than almost anything else that has come along so far," said Richard Johnston, a professor at the University of British Columbia and an expert in public opinion and election.
Opinion polls show Trudeau's Liberals have a slender lead over the official opposition Conservatives ahead of an election set for this October.
"Mr. Trudeau's ethical lapses and his disastrous handling of this latest scandal have thrown his government into chaos," Conservative leader Andrew Scheer said in a statement.
Saudi Arabia denies ties to Bezos-AMI dispute
In 2017, Trudeau apologized after the office of the ethics commissioner said he had broken conflict-of-interest laws by accepting a vacation on a Bahamas island owned by the Aga Khan.
Wilson-Raybould, 47, appointed justice minister when Trudeau's Liberals came to power in November 2015, is one of the most prominent aboriginal politicians in federal politics.

That last one is still bugging me. Not just and experienced and seemingly fit Captain, who had been making that run for years, but they found his body within six hours. Don't drowned bodies in freezing cold water tend to stay under for days or weeks, even? How did they find him so fast? Is the water around Livingtson Island shallow, and what about the currents…are they strong? And just how far is Livingston Island from Rothschild Island in Antarctica?

Canadian man drives SUV through group of Freedom Convoy protesters, injuring 4
A Canadian man is facing criminal charges after plowing through a group of protesters taking part in the Freedom Convoy of truckers protesting the country's coronavirus vaccine mandates Friday night.
"A 42yr old male is facing charges after driving through a group of protesters that were part of the Freedom Convoy at the Legislative grounds," the Winnipeg Police tweeted Saturday. "4 adult males were struck."
In an accompanying press release, police say the driver in a Jeep Patriot plowed through the crowd and then sped off at high speeds before being chased down by police and arrested after a brief struggle.
Three people sustained minor injuries that did not require medical attention and the fourth was treated in the hospital and released.
"A 42-year-old male from Headingly, Manitoba, faces charges of: Assault with Weapon x 4, Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance Cause Bodily Harm x 2, Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance, Fail to Stop After Accident Knowing That Reckless x 2, Fail to Stop at Scene of Accident x 2," police say.
Graphic video of the incident circulated on social media showing a group of people peacefully protesting before being struck by the Jeep and chasing after it as it fled.
The Freedom Convoy is composed of truckers and other protesters who are demanding the Canadian government end federal COVID-19 mandates including vaccine requirements for cross-border travel.

The convoy began Jan. 23 and culminated with hundreds of thousands of demonstrators arriving in Ottawa, Canada's capital, on Jan. 29 to protest the mandates. Many truckers have remained parked in the same places since the weekend in below-freezing temperatures, honking their horns and revving their engines.
"We're all brothers in this together, and we're here for one cause, and that's the fight for the freedoms of Canadians and for Canada itself," one trucker, Andrew, told Fox News.
Canadian trucker Mat Mackenzie said on Friday that the freedom convoy isn't going to stop until the Canadian government removes COVID vaccine mandates.
"They are not giving in and I got to say, we have a message to bring to all Canadians and the world watching that our freedoms matter," Mackenzie told Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino on "America's Newsroom."
