Layoffs 2020: Delta, United Airlines Prepare For Massive Gutting Following Coronavirus Outbreak
Delta and United are expected to begin firing thousands of employees after Sept. 30
The protection from layoffs enshrined in the CARES Act ends on this date
Both companies have made public their plans to go small
Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, the world's second and third largest airlines in terms of fleet size, are about to lay off tens of thousands of employees starting this year as COVID-19 continues to slow down passenger air travel to a painful crawl.
Delta employs close to 90,000 people worldwide while United has 96,000 employees. Both companies announced their intent to go small but aren't revealing how many people they plan to fire. Analysts said the numbers they have in mind might be close to or in excess of the 30% layoffs announced by American Airlines.
Delta and United won't be able to fire people until Oct. 1, however. The limitation on firing employees as a condition for the $58 billion bailout by the United States government's CARES Act expires Sept. 30. Half of this amount consisted of grant aid that covered airline payrolls and prevented layoffs through Sept. 30. Delta and United were among the airlines that took the money.
Delta is now laying the groundwork for what airline sources suspect will be massive layoffs. On Thursday, Delta said in a memo to its staff a "smaller Delta unfortunately means fewer people will be required." This means the obvious: layoffs or voluntary retirement.
The company is dangling two voluntary exit programs before the employees: one is a retirement package for employees that have worked at Delta for more than 25 years; the other is a buyout covering most of its workforce.
"While we never dreamed just a few months ago that we would be talking about a smaller Delta this was expected to be a year of growth, after all this is the reality we're facing," wrote CEO Ed Bastian in the memo to employees. "Every voluntary departure helps to protect the jobs of those who most need them."
United has been preparing its employees for the day of culling since late March. United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz and president Scott Kirby on March 27 sent a letter to all employees stating in stark terms layoff are in the company's future as no immediate relief can be expected from the dreadful plunge in passenger numbers.

Q Research General #11440: No Bailouts For Blue States Edition
Boeing CEO Warns Aviation Rebound Will Take Years
Days after President Trump floated the idea that the US government could purchase five years of airline tickets in bulk as part of a stimulus package for crippled airline carriers, Boeing CEO's Dave Calhoun has warned that air travel growth might not return to pre-corona levels for years. Calhoun made the comments on Monday morning at an annual shareholder meeting. He said it would take 2-3 years for air travel growth to return to pre-corona levels, adding that long term growth trends could take even longer to recover. "Based on what we know now, we expect it will take two to three years for travel to return to 2019 levels and an additional few years beyond that for the industry's long-term trend growth to return," he said. Calhoun said the new reality in a post-corona world is a depressing one for airlines: "…they are making difficult decisions that result in grounding fleets, deferring airplane orders, postponing acceptance of completed orders, and slowing down or stopping payments." This is more bad news for Boeing, who has drawn down on revolvers as it struggles to survive, requesting a government bailout as it's faced with a wave of cancellation orders for its planes.
Calhoun said Boeing would need to borrow more money in the next six months. He said it could be years until the company begins paying a dividend again, nevertheless, restarting its stock buyback program. His gloomy outlook echoed our report from April 20, which confirmed the airline industry has crashed as the virus pandemic drove travel demand down to the lowest in decades. We noted that United Airlines and other carriers have warned it could take several years for recovery as well. As a result of depressed passenger traffic, airlines are expected to slash tens of thousands of workers, cancel new plane orders, and trim costs across the board later this year. "Without a quick improvement in demand, we could see the airlines look to shed 800 to 1,000 aircraft, which could result in a reduction of 95,000 to 105,000 airline jobs," Cowen analyst Helane Becker wrote in an April 13 client note.
United's chief executive and president, Oscar Munoz and Scott Kirby said in an April 15 memo to employees that the industry has a "challenging economic outlook" and the overall workforce at the company will be smaller in the future than today. Airlines cheered when Congress last month allocated $50 billion in bailouts to the sector that included $25 billion in grants and loans to keep 750,000 workers employed through September 30. Cowen & Co. has predicted ticket sales won't recover to pre-corona levels until 2025, which explains why President Trump wants to purchase bulk tickets for the next five years. As for Boeing, well, they might be screwed for quite some time as a recovery in the airline industry is years away. This would be a perfect time for Boeing to restructure the company and change its name, along with the name of the 737 Max.

Q Research General #11345: Monday Morning Melania Edition
United Reports $2.1BN Loss As Airlines Brace To Fire 100,000 Once Bailout Loans Expire
United Airlines confirmed the carnage hitting US airlines today when it reported a $2.1 billion loss for first quarter as the coronavirus pandemic drove travel demand down to the lowest level in decades.
United said revenue plunged 17% in the first quarter from a year ago to $8 billion which as a reminder is largely due to the collapse in traffic in just the second half of March, so one can imagine what happens in all of Q2 should the situation fail to normalize.
With revenues unlikely to return any time soon even as losses mount, the Chicago-based airline said it applied for up to $4.5 billion in government loans on top of about $5 billion federal payroll grants and loans it also expects to receive to weather the crisis. As CNBC details, United was the first major U.S. airline to detail the results - while they are preliminary - of the virus on its results in the first three months of the year. The disease and harsh measures to stop it from spreading such as stay-at-home orders has ravaged air travel demand and and prompted carriers to slash most of their flights.
And as US airlines face a bleak future of depressed traffic and volatile revenue well into 2021, they are preparing to cut costs to the bone. As Bloomberg reports, the next big crunch date for airlines is this fall, when billions of dollars in government assistance will come to an end. As a result, key carriers including Delta and United have already begun openly contemplating how they will shrink operations, and one analyst expects that as many as 105,000 jobs could be lost industrywide.
"Without a quick improvement in demand, we could see the airlines look to shed 800 to 1,000 aircraft, which could result in a reduction of 95,000 to 105,000 airline jobs," Cowen analyst Helane Becker wrote in an April 13 client note. "The rightsizing of the fleet and work force is an unfortunate truth."
"The challenging economic outlook means we have some tough decisions ahead as we plan for our airline, and our overall workforce, to be smaller than it is today," United's chief executive and president, Oscar Munoz and Scott Kirby, wrote in an April 15 employee memo.
As a reminder, under the terms of the $50 billion government bailout, airlines are barred from slashing jobs through Sept. 30 but they're already warning employees that cuts are almost inevitable. The planned contraction reflects a widespread belief that 2020 revenues could shrink to levels not seen in years. Recovery will probably be a long-term affair, said Cowen & Co., which predicted that ticket sales may not rebound to pre-pandemic levels until 2025. Unable to cut jobs or salaries while receiving grants to cover payroll, airlines will staff their typical summer peak largely as usual, even with millions of fewer travelers. But come fall, it will get ugly for employees unless the government bailout is rolled into 2021. "We're going to be smaller coming out of this," Delta CFO Paul Jacobson told employees last month. "Certainly quite a bit smaller than when we went into it."
The upcoming mass layoffs will add to 87,000 employees - more than one quarter of the Big Three airlines' workforce - who have taken voluntary leaves, early retirement or reduced work hours in the past two months.
Carriers face "the worst cash crisis in the history of flight," with booked revenues down 103% year over year, according to industry lobby Airlines for America. Domestic flights are averaging just 10 passengers while international flights average 24, the group said. Once laid off, those employees have years of unemployment to look forward to.
While airlines foresee an uptick in bargain-hunting leisure travelers this summer, rich travelers will take longer to win back. Corporations will be reluctant to assume the liability of putting employees back in the sky with Covid-19 still in wide circulation. Plus, many companies have learned to function via video conference-which is a lot cheaper than a business class seat.
According to Bloomberg, the airline industry generally has taken three to four years to fully recover from major disruptions, said Samuel Engel, head of the aviation group at consultant ICF. Economic downturns often accelerate trends that were already underway, like pulling down marginal routes and, more recently, the decline in demand for large aircraft, he said.
"The last couple of years, you have seen extensions of flights toward end of day and early morning, and growth of long, thin routes to secondary cities in Asia," he said. "Those types of things get pulled back, and some don't reappear until quite late in the economic cycle."

Why Did Hundreds Of CEOs Resign Just Before The World Started Going Absolutely Crazy?
In the months prior to the most ferocious stock market crash in history and the eruption of the biggest public health crisis of our generation, we witnessed the biggest exodus of corporate CEOs that we have ever seen. And as you will see below, corporate insiders also sold off billions of dollars worth of shares in their own companies just before the stock market imploded. In life, timing can be everything, and sometimes people simply get lucky. But it does seem odd that so many among the corporate elite would be so exceedingly "lucky" all at the same time. In this article I am not claiming to know the motivations of any of these individuals, but I am pointing out certain patterns that I believe are worth investigating.
One financial publication is using the phrase "the great CEO exodus" to describe the phenomenon that we have been witnessing. It all started last year when chief executives started resigning in numbers unlike anything that we have ever seen before. The following was published by NBC News last November...
Chief executives are leaving in record numbers this year, with more than 1,332 stepping aside in the period from January through the end of October, according to new data released on Wednesday. While it's not unusual to see CEOs fleeing in the middle of a recession, it is noteworthy to see such a rash of executive exits amid robust corporate earnings and record stock market highs.
Last month, 172 chief executives left their jobs, according to executive placement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. It's the highest monthly number on record, and the year-to-date total outpaces even the wave of executive exits during the financial crisis.
By the end of the year, an all-time record high 1,480 CEOs had left their posts. (Fortune Magazine, right)

United cuts May flights by 90%, tells employees to brace for job cuts
United Airlines Holdings Inc said on Wednesday that it has cut its flight schedule by 90% in May and expects similar cuts for June as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, and warned that travel demand that is now "essentially at zero shows no sign of improving in the near term," making job cuts likely.
United disclosed its outlook in a memo to employees that it publicly released. The memo was from Chief Executive Oscar Munoz and President Scott Kirby.
While the $5 billion that United expect to receive in government payroll support under the CARES Act bars its from involuntary furloughs before Sept. 30, the airline indicated that it expects to have to cut payroll after that. It said it will be offering new voluntary leave packages in the coming weeks and voluntary separation programs.
United said that the government money does not cover its total payroll expense, and noted that payroll is only about 30% of total costs, which also include airport rent and supplies.
United's efforts to further cut payroll costs are similar to moves by peers Delta Air Lines Inc and American Airlines Group Inc.
United is among airlines eyeing a separate $25 billion federal loan package for U.S. passenger carriers given expected favorable terms, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

Lawmakers already planning more coronavirus stimulus after $2T package
Lawmakers are already planning another round of legislation aimed at keeping companies flush with capital and millions of workers on payrolls amid the coronavirus pandemic, even after passing a $2 trillion relief bill this past week, the largest stimulus of its kind in U.S. history.
The Senate plans to be on recess until April 20, and the House will take an extended break as well, though members say they could return sooner depending on how the economy reacts in the next few weeks.
Businesses, trade associations and state governments are already jockeying for more federal relief, calling the package that President Trump signed Friday a good "first step" but not enough to keep the economy on track if the coronavirus crisis extends beyond the end of April.
Lawmakers in both parties say they expect discussions on a "phase four" coronavirus response bill in the weeks ahead as travel restrictions, social distancing and sick workers squeeze or shutter businesses nationwide.
"I think the odds are we'll need more legislation. First, we don't know the extent of the crisis in terms of the magnitude, so that could rise. But there are going to be problems that we don't realize now that we're going to have to grapple with," Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) said.
"So I think the odds are high there will be a Covid-4," he added, referring to the anticipated next bill.
The need for additional action from Congress was highlighted by a report Thursday that more than 3 million Americans applied for their first week of unemployment in the week ending March 21, a tremendous spike from recent numbers well under 300,000.
United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz warned Friday that the company will likely have to lay off workers in the fall because the stimulus package was not big enough.
"Being honest, fair and upfront with you: If the recovery is as slow as we fear, it means our airline and workforce will have to be smaller than it is today," he said.
The stimulus package includes language in its air carrier worker support subtitle that prohibits airlines from furloughing workers or cutting benefits before Sept. 30, but Munoz warned Friday the slowdown in travel may last into next year.
Senate Republican Policy Committee Chairman Roy Blunt (Mo.) said he expects another relief bill soon.
"The minute we're done with phase three, we'll start talking about phase four because all of us know that phase three can't have included everything that needs to be included," he said.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) also says another stimulus package is needed and on Wednesday vowed that House Democrats would seek to send out another round of direct rebates to low- and middle-income Americans.
"We had bigger direct payments in our bill, and we think we'll get more direct payments in another bill," she said in an interview with CNN.
The package Trump signed into law Friday will send $1,200 rebate checks to American adults earning up to $75,000, with the amounts phasing out above that threshold.

Pope accepts resignation of Chilean cardinal accused of covering up abuse
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati as archbishop of Santiago, the highest-ranking member of the Catholic Church in Chile, who has been caught up in the country's sex abuse scandal. The decision to accept Ezzati's resignation, announced in a Vatican statement on Saturday, comes at a time of sustained criticism of the Church's response to a decades-long sexual abuse crisis. Victims of sexual abuse by clergymen say a top-level conference at the Vatican last month failed to come up with concrete measures to tackle the issue.
On March 13 an Australian court sentenced former Vatican treasurer Cardinal George Pell to six years in prison for sexually abusing two choir boys in Melbourne - the most senior Catholic to be convicted for child sex offences. Pell is appealing.
Ezzati, 77, faces multiple charges of cover up, including some relating to the case of Oscar Munoz, a former top aide to the Santiago Archbishopric, who is facing trial on charges he abused and raped at least five children. He denies wrongdoing. In October, Ezzati exercised his right to remain silent after being summoned for questioning by a state prosecutor over the allegations. His resignation brought to eight the number of bishops who have stepped down since all of the country's 34 bishops offered their resignations en masse during an emergency meeting with the pope last May over allegations of a cover-up.
The May meeting was held after Vatican investigators produced a 2,300-page report alleging that senior Church officials in Chile had failed to act on abuse claims and in some cases hid them. Despite his resignation as archbishop of the Chilean capital, Ezzati will keep his title of cardinal. Until he turns 80, he also will be eligible to enter a conclave to elect a new pope after Francis' death or resignation.
