Astana[a] is the capital city of Kazakhstan. With a population of 1,7 million within the city limits, it is the second-largest in the country after Almaty, the national capital until 1997.[13] The city lies on the banks of the Ishim river in the north of Kazakhstan and is located within the Akmola Region but is self-administering. Initially founded as Aqmoly in 1830, the city was later renamed Akmolinsk, Tselinograd, and Aqmola before adopting the name Astana in 1998, or "capital" in Kazakh.[14] In 2019, the city adopted the name Nur-Sultan in honor of former president Nursultan Nazarbayev, but it reverted to the name Astana in 2022.

Kazakhstan to Qazaqstan: Why would a country switch its alphabet?
31 October 2017
The Kazakh language has long been unsure which alphabet to find a comfortable home in and it's now in for another transition - but this is not without controversy.
Last Friday Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev finally decreed that the language would shed its heavy Cyrillic coat and don what he hopes to be a more fashionable attire: the Latin alphabet.
Is this going to be easy?
No. The Latin alphabet has far fewer letters: There will need to be creative combinations with apostrophes to catch all the sounds needed for the Kazakh language.
Kazakhstan is in an unusual position: None of the alphabets that exist seem like a perfect fit or have a long enough tradition to be the uncontested host for its language.
Kazakh is a Turk-based language and its history is political: Originally it was written in Arabic. Enter the Soviet Union who in 1929 did away with Arabic and introduced Latin - only to 11 years later shift to the Cyrillic alphabet to have the republic more in line with the rest of the USSR.
The Kazakh version of Cyrillic has 33 Russian letters and nine Kazakh ones, while the Latin script only has 26.
The big changeover is to be official by 2025.
Confused by all this talk about letters and characters? Before you get lost in translation, here are a few spellings of the country's name just to give you an idea:
The different spellings of Kazakhstan in all its alphabet are very confusing.
So why change?
President Nursultan Nazarbayev has given a lengthy explanation: There are many reasons like of modernising Kazakhstan, but also determined by "specific political reasons".
Political pundits see it as step to weaken the historical ties to Russia: Shedding not only the Russian alphabet, the thinking goes, but also the influence Moscow still likes to exert over its post-Soviet backyard in central Asia.

Giustra teams with Clinton, Slim on Haiti fund
Vancouver mining financier Frank Giustra is teaming with former U.S. president Bill Clinton and Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim to create a $20-million (U.S.) fund that will finance small businesses in earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
The fund, which was unveiled Thursday in Port-au-Prince, will provide seed money to Haitian business ventures with the hope of improving the island country's economic fortunes.
"The fund we are announcing today recognizes the important role small and medium-sized enterprises play in helping to build a modern, self-sustainable economy that will allow Haiti to one day stand on its own two feet," Mr. Clinton said in a statement.
"We hope to empower entrepreneurs with tools to transform their aspirations, hard work and good ideas into profitable businesses that create jobs and help fuel the growth of the Haitian economy," he added.
Rather than providing direct aid, the new fund intends to provide capital to small-and medium-sized businesses. The belief is that those enterprises will create sustainable economic activity and jobs in Haiti, where unemployment is about 80 per cent.
A massive earthquake struck Haiti on Jan. 12, killing more than 300,000 people, according to some estimates, and leaving many more homeless.
The Haiti investment fund will provide equity and financing for ventures that currently lack access to traditional financing sources. The fund will be managed by a committee and seek a return on its investments. Investment returns and returns on the fund as a whole will be reinvested in the fund and used to back new ventures in Haiti.
"By aligning the fund alongside local needs and priorities, we're giving Haiti's entrepreneurs the tools and resources they need to put their talent and determination to work," Mr. Giustra said in a statement.
Mr. Giustra and Mr. Clinton launched the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative (CGSGI) in 2007, as an offshoot of Mr. Clinton's own charitable foundation. Mr. Giustra, who made his fortune in Canada's rough and tumble junior mining sector, initially pledged $100-million to the CGSGI, which provides aid and funding for small businesses in areas of the world that have been affected by the mining industry.
The duo came under scrutiny when it was revealed that the former president had travelled to Kazakhstan in 2005 and met with that country's president Nursultan Nazarbayev along with Mr. Giustra. Shortly after the meeting, Mr. Giustra was able to close a deal to acquire uranium assets in the former Soviet republic. Both Mr. Giustra and Mr. Clinton have denied that the former president has helped Mr. Giustra in his business dealings.
In addition to his own contributions, Mr. Giustra has secured donations to the CGSGI from members of Canada's mining industry, including companies such as Vancouver's Teck Resources Ltd. and Toronto brokerage firm GMP Securities. Mr. Slim, who amassed his wealth from Mexico's telecom sector, matched Mr. Giustra's $100-million pledge to the CGSGI.
So far, the CGSGI has focused primarily on ventures in Peru and Colombia. Mr. Clinton and Mr. Giustra travelled to those countries earlier this month to review the foundation's philanthropic efforts.

Astana, initially founded as Akmoly in 1830, was later renamed Akmolinsk, Tselinograd, and Akmola before adopting the name Astana in 1998, which means "capital city" in Kazakh. In 2019, it was named Nur-Sultan in honor of the outgoing Nursultan Nazarbayev, who had ruled the country since independence until voluntarily stepping down. Recently, interim Kazakh President Qasym-Zhomart Toqaev signed a decree to rename Astana back to its former name.

In essence, Andrew has become a cautionary tale about the temptations and pitfalls of modern royalty.
When Andrew was born he was second in line to the throne, the proverbial spare who was there to step in, if disaster struck the heir, his brother Charles. But after Charles got married Andrew's position dropped with every new child and grandchild, and he now stands at eighth place in the royal pecking order.
While other senior royals spend much of their time opening recreation centers and meeting community leaders on behalf of their more exalted relations, Andrew initially took on bigger tasks.
After 22 years in the Royal Navy, including combat operations as a helicopter pilot during the Falklands War, Andrew was named Britain's special representative for international trade and investment in 2001.
But he was forced to step down in 2011 amid growing concern about his friendship with Epstein, who had been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to soliciting a minor for prostitution. Andrew had also been criticized for meeting with the son of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi and the son-in-law of ousted Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Even before that, some members of Parliament had raised concerns about the sale of Andrew's former home, Sunninghill Park, to a son-in-law of former Kazakh ruler Nursultan Nazarbayev in 2007. The buyer allegedly paid 15 million pounds ($19 million) for the property - 3 million pounds more than the asking price.
But it is Andrew's links to Epstein that have been his biggest problem.
Questions about the relationship resurfaced after Epstein was again arrested on sex trafficking charges in 2019. In an effort to silence the criticism, Andrew gave a disastrous interview to the BBC's Newsnight program in which he tried to explain away his contacts with Epstein and failed to show empathy for his victims.
Amid the backlash, Andrew announced on Nov. 20, 2019, that he was stepping away from royal duties "for the foreseeable future."
"It has become clear to me over the last few days that the circumstances relating to my former association with Jeffrey Epstein has become a major disruption to my family's work and the valuable work going on in the many organizations and charities that I am proud to support," he said in a statement.
But the announcement didn't end the scandal.
In August 2021, one of Epstein's victims sued Andrew in a New York court, alleging that the prince had sex with her when she was underage. Andrew denied the allegations, but he was stripped of all military affiliations and royal charity work as the case moved through the legal process.
Andrew ultimately settled the case for an undisclosed sum, with a joint statement indicating the prince would make a "substantial donation" to a victims' rights charity. British newspapers reported amounts for the settlement ranged from $6 million to $16 million.
Even now, Andrew's interview with Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis continues to haunt the prince and the royal family. It resurfaced earlier this year in the Netflix movie "Scoop," reminding a worldwide audience of Andrew's missteps.
"He has consistently used his privileged position and his power to cozy up to convicted sex offenders, Chinese spies - in pursuit of his own interests, whether it's about expanding his own influence or indeed extending his own business interests,'' Owens said. "That's the problem here, that he's used the position given to him by birth to seek out these opportunities."

Between 2012 and 2014 - when his father Joe Biden served as Vice President - Hunter Biden worked as a go-between to Kenes Rakishev, a Kazakh oligarch with close ties to the country's longtime kleptocratic leader Nursultan Nazarbayev, The Daily Mail reported. The British tabloid said they obtained emails from "anti-corruption campaigners" in Kazakhstan showing Hunter making contact with Rakishev and attempting to facilitate investment for his cash in New York, Washington DC and a Nevada mining company. Through his connections, emails show Hunter Biden successfully engineered a $1 million investment from Rakishev to filmmaker Alexandra Forbes Kerry - the daughter of ex-Sen. and former Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, the report said. Hunter Biden and Rakishev also enjoyed a long and chummy personal correspondence as well, alleged emails show.

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/10/16/exclusive-this-is-china-inc-emails-reveal-hunter-bidens-associates-helped-communist-aligned-chinese-elites-secure-white-house-meetings/
- Emails provided by Bevan Cooney, former Hunter Biden and Devon Archer business associate reveal that:
- On 11/5/11, an Archer business contact forwarded email teasing opportunity to gain "potentially outstanding new clients" by helping to arrange WH meetings for group of Chinese execs & gov officials. The group was the China Entrepreneur Club (CEC) and the delegation included Chinese billionaires, Chinese Communist Party loyalists, and at least one "respected diplomat" from Beijing. Despite its benign name, CEC has been called "a second foreign ministry" for the People's Republic of China-a communist government that closely controls most businesses in its country. CEC was established in 2006 by a group of businessmen and Chinese government diplomats.
CEC's leadership incl senior CCP members, including Wang Zhongyu ("vice chairman of the 10th CPPCC National Committee and deputy secretary of the Party group"), Ma Weihua (director of multiple CCP offices), and Jiang Xipei (CCP member & rep of the 16th National Congress)
- Intermediary named Mohamed A. Khashoggi wrote on behalf of the CEC to an associate of Hunter Biden and Devon Archer. "A tour of the white house and a meeting with a member of the chief of staff's office and John Kerry would be great"
- CEC's current membership includes 50 preeminent figures such as: Liu Chuanzhi, Chairman of the CEC, Legend Holdings and Lenovo Group; Wu Jinglian, Zhang Weiying, and Zhou Qiren, China's esteemed economists; Wu Jianmin, respected diplomat; Long Yongtu, representative of China's globalization; Wang Shi (Vanke); Ma Weihua (China Merchants Bank); Jack Ma (Alibaba Group); Guo Guangchang (Fosun Group); Wang Jianlin, (Wanda Group); Niu Gensheng (LAONIU Foundation); Li Shufu (Geely); Li Dongsheng (TCL Corporation); Feng Lun (Vantone) and etc. Gross income of CEC members' companies allegedly ">RMB 1.5T, together accounting for roughly 4% of China's GDP." "This is China Inc," wrote Khashoggi in the email, referring to the delegation of Chinese billionaires.
- Kashoggi Oct. 19, 2011 email was sent to Gary Fears - a controversial political fundraiser with a checkered history who was caught up in a riverboat casino scandal in the mid-1990s - who forwarded it on to Archer a couple weeks later on Nov. 5, 2011.
- Obama-Biden admin archives: Chinese delegation did visit WH 11/14/11, and enjoyed high-level access. The delegation included approximately thirty members, according to White House visitor logs. The visitor logs list Jeff Zients, the deputy director of Obama's (OMB), as the host of the CEC delegation. CEC also confirms the delegation met with Obama's then-recently-confirmed Commerce Secretary John Bryson. Visitor logs do not mention any meeting with Vice President Joe Biden. But the Vice President's off-the-books meeting was revealed by one of the core founders of the CEC. In an obscure document listing the CEC members' biographies, CEC Secretary General Maggie Cheng alleges that she facilitated the CEC delegation meetings in Washington in 2011 and boasts of the Washington establishment figures that CEC met with. The first name she dropped was that of Vice President Joe Biden.'''
- Hunter Biden and Devon Archer 2 years later help form Chinese government funded Bohai Harvest RST (BHR) investment fund. One of BHR's first major portfolio investments was a ride-sharing company like Uber called Didi Dache-now called Didi Chuxing Technology Co. That company is closely connected to Liu Chuanzhi, the chairman of the China Entrepreneur Club (CEC) and the founder of Legend Holdings-the parent company of Lenovo, one of the world's largest computer companies. Liu is a former Chinese Communist Party delegate and was a leader of the 2011 CEC delegation to the White House. Liu Chuanzhi's daughter was the President of Didi. Liu has long been involved in CCP politics, including serving as a representative to the 9th, 10th, and 11th sessions of the National People's Congress of the PRC and as a representative to the 16th and 17th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. Liu was the Vice Chairman of the 8th and 9th Executive Committee of All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC), an organization known to be affiliated with the Chinese United Front.

USSS records reveal Hunter flew to China on AF2 w/j Joe while brokering 12/2013 deal. Arranged for a Chinese partner to shake hands w/ Joe. BHR registered 12 days later. Beijing OK'd a business license shortly after.

The Uranium One controversy involves various theories promoted by conservative media, politicians, and commentators that characterized the sale of the uranium mining company Uranium One to the Russian state-owned corporation Rosatom as a $145 million bribery scandal involving Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation. No evidence of wrongdoing was ever found.
Since the 2015 publication of the book Clinton Cash by Breitbart News editor and Steve Bannon collaborator Peter Schweizer, as well as a 2015 New York Times article that used some of Schweizer's raw research, allegations of a bribery scheme involving Hillary Clinton, the Clinton Foundation and the 2010 sale of Uranium One persisted, primarily in conservative media. Fox News host Sean Hannity characterized it as "the biggest scandal - or, at least, one of them - in American history," while his frequent guest and former Trump advisor Seb Gorka equated it with treason worthy of a death sentence.
Despite four years of discussion and analysis of the matter-as well as an FBI investigation-no evidence of any quid pro quo or other wrong-doing surfaced. Numerous Republican politicians and pundits, including President Donald Trump, insisted that the Clinton-Uranium One story was the "real" Russian scandal, rather than the matters for which the Trump administration was investigated. The Washington Post reported in January 2020 that an additional Justice Department investigation into the matter, initiated after Donald Trump took office in 2017, was winding down after finding nothing worth pursuing.

On April 20, 2007, Uranium One, a Canadian mining company with headquarters in Toronto, acquired UrAsia Energy, a Canadian firm with headquarters in Vancouver, from Frank Giustra, who then resigned from the UrAsia Energy Board of Directors.[11][12] Having severed ties with UrAsia Energy and Uranium One in 2007, Giustra had no evident beneficial interest in the subsequent sale of Uranium One to Rosatom in 2010 because he sold the 2,790,000 Uranium One shares he received in exchange for his shares of UrAsia (UrAsia sharesholders received 0.45 shares of Uranium One as per the deal terms) in 2007. UrAsia has interests in rich uranium operations in Kazakhstan,[13] and UrAsia Energy's acquisition of its Kazakhstan uranium interests from Kazatomprom followed a trip to Almaty in 2005 by Giustra and former U.S. President Bill Clinton where they met with Nursultan Nazarbayev, the leader of Kazakhstan. Giustra denies reporting by The New York Times that he and Clinton traveled together to Almaty.[14] Substantial contributions to the Clinton Foundation by Giustra followed,[11][15] with Clinton, Giustra, and Mexican telecommunications billionaire Carlos Slim in 2007 establishing the Clinton Foundation's Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative to combat poverty in the developing world.[16] In addition to his initial pledge of $100 million, Giustra pledged to contribute half of his future earnings from mining to the initiative.[16] There is no indication that Giustra was contemplating any transaction with Russian interests at the time he began donating to the Clinton Foundation in 2005; rather, he sold UrAsia Energy to Uranium One, a South African-Canadian company based in Toronto, in 2007. That sale was completed two months before he made his pledges to the Clinton Foundation.[17][18]
Since uranium is considered a strategic asset with national security implications and Uranium One owned uranium mining operations in the United States, the acquisition of Uranium One by Rosatom was reviewed by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), a committee of nine government cabinet departments and agencies including the United States Department of State, which was then headed by Hillary Clinton. Clinton herself did not sit on CFIUS, but rather the State Department was represented by Jose Fernandez, the Assistant Secretary of State for Economic, Energy and Business Affairs, who stated that Clinton was not involved in the Uranium One matter.[19][20][21] Although CFIUS members can object to such a foreign transaction, none did,[22] and no member can veto a decision; veto power rests solely with the president.[23][24] CFIUS unanimously approved the Uranium One sale.[25] The Utah Division of Radiation Control and Canada's foreign investment review agency also approved the transaction.[26][27]

President: Kazakhstan's capital will again be called Astana
MOSCOW (AP) - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has agreed to restore the former name of the country's capital just three years after he renamed it in honor of his predecessor, his spokesperson said Tuesday.
One of Tokayev's first moves upon taking office in 2019 after President Nursultan Nazarbayev stepped down was to call for Kazakhstan's capital, Astana, to be dubbed Nur-Sultan instead.
Nazarbayev, who led the country for three decades under the Soviet Union and after it gained independence in 1991, relocated the capital from Almaty to Astana in 1997. The move was widely questioned because of the city's relative isolation in the northern steppes and notoriously frigid winters in which temperatures plunge as low as 51 degrees Celsius below zero (minus-60 F).
He made the city into a showplace of gaudy architecture, including an observation tower where visitors can place their hands in a print of Nazarbayev's.
After he stepped down, Nazarbayev retained enormous influence as head of the county's ruling party and security council. But Tokayev removed him from those posts after deadly unrest in January that hinged partly on dissatisfaction with the power that Nazarbayev still wielded.
Tokayev's spokesman, Ruslan Zheliban, said the president agreed to the name change after an initiative by a group of parliament members.

Kazakh MPs Question Government Aid Given to Bank Related to ex President
OCCRP found earlier this year that a chain of foundations established by Nazarbayev controls assets of more that $8 billion.
Six members of the Kazakh Parliament, including four from the ruling party, have asked the government how it plans to return billions given to one of the biggest banks in the country controlled by a foundation linked to former long-time President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
"It seems that the shareholders of the Bank, instead of lending it to businesses, almost completely withdrew the taxpayer's state aid from the bank's capital directly into their pockets," the MPs wrote.
Nazarbayev said in a recent interview that all financial activities of the Foundation and the University were under the control of Karim Massimov, who was officially the head of the board of the Nazarbayev University.
Massimov, who was chief of the Committee of National Security for the last five years, was arrested in early January and accused of corruption, treason and of having attempted to seize power.

Kazakhstan denies military laboratory was seized by rioters after Russia claimed a possible pathogen leak occurred at controversial facility, as country's health ministry says more than 160 have been killed during protests in the country
The US-funded laboratory was reported to have fallen into protestors' hands
However, officials have denied the claims, saying the biological lab is secure
At the secretive bio-lab, the outbreak of potentially deadly diseases is studied
Russian state media highlighted claims that a pathogen had escaped at the lab
There have been over 160 reported deaths since protests broke out last week
PUBLISHED: 12:14 EST, 9 January 2022 | UPDATED: 18:37 EST, 9 January 2022
Officials in Kazakhstan have denied that a controversial 'military biological laboratory' was seized in the recent unrest, which has so far claimed 160 lives since starting on January 2.
It is not clear if the 164 deaths refer only to civilians or if law enforcement deaths are included, but the number - provided by the health ministry to state news channel Khabar-24 - are a significant rise from previous tallies.
Kazakh authorities said earlier on Sunday that 16 police or national guard members had been killed.
Russian media highlighted claims that the US-funded facility near Almaty was compromised, resulting in a possible leak of dangerous pathogens.
The airport, mayor's office and secret services buildings fell briefly into the hands of rioters during a wave of protests backed by shadowy armed cells.
The secret bio-laboratory funded by the US defence department - which has links to Russian and Chinese scientists - was also compromised in the disturbances, according to social media claims that it was seized.
'This is not true. The facility is being guarded,' said the health ministry which is responsible for the Central Reference Laboratory, in Almaty.
Official Russian news agency TASS had highlighted alleged social media reports that it was taken over by 'unidentified people' and 'specialists in chemical protection suits were working near the lab so a leak of dangerous pathogens could have occurred'.
The laboratory's existence has been controversial and in 2020 the country formally denied that it was being used to make biological weapons.
At the time, the Kazakh government stated: 'No biological weapons development is underway in Kazakhstan - and no research is conducted against any other states.'
It was built in 2017 and is used for the study of outbreaks of particularly dangerous infections.
Dangerous pathogens are stored here, it is reported.
In 2018 there were claims - officially denied - that a new strain of meningitis had leaked from the lab.
The Kazakhs said earlier that no US personnel remain involved in the lab's work, which included the study of Covid.
The furore over the lab came amid growing intrigue over the organisation of the protests that have now subsided after a large Russian force was sent to Kazakhstan.
Reports have cited well-coordinated armed groups alongside protesters against a gas price hike.
Pictures have emerged of guns seized in the riots in which almost 6,000 have been detained 'with a sizable number of foreign nationals among them'.
It is as yet not clear where these alleged foreign provocateurs were from.
Pictures have also been released of Kazakh secret services operatives killed in the unrest.
The head of the security service Karim Masimov, a close ally of ex-president Nursultan Nazarbayev, has been detained on suspicion of 'treason' relating to this week's mayhem, and other officials have been purged by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who is now seen as dependent on Vladimir Putin for remaining in power.
Russia and allies Belarus have continued to pour troops and equipment into Kazakhstan.
Kazakh authorities said earlier on Sunday that 16 police or national guard members had been killed in the protests that started on January 2.
A total of 103 deaths were in Almaty, the country's largest city, where demonstrators seized government buildings and set some on fire, according to the ministry. The country's ombudswoman for children's rights said that three of those killed were minors, including a four-year-old girl.
The ministry earlier reported more than 2,200 people sought treatment for injuries from the protests, and the Interior Ministry said about 1,300 security officers were injured.
About 5,800 people have been detained by police during the protests that developed into violence last week and prompted a Russia-led military alliance to send troops to the country, the office of Kazakhstan's president said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday he will not allow governments allied with Moscow to be toppled in so-called "color revolutions," a reference to the series of popular uprisings that have shaken former Soviet republics.
"We will not allow the boat to be rocked," Putin said.
During an online meeting with leaders of a Russian-led collective security alliance, Putin blamed last week's violent unrest in Kazakhstan on "destructive internal and external forces." He added, "Of course, we understand the events in Kazakhstan are not the first and far from the last attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of our states from the outside."
Kazakh officials say a 4-year-old girl was among the 164 people who were killed in last week's protests. Authorities say 5,800 people have been detained. In an effort to halt the protests, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev issued a shoot-to-kill order, enabling security forces to open fire on protesters without warning.
The demonstrations were prompted by a fuel price increase but morphed into a broader protest over the country's authoritarian rule. Tokayev asked Russia for help in quashing the demonstrations amid concerns about the loyalty of some law enforcement units. Russia and several other members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, a Eurasian intergovernmental military alliance formed in 1994, responded by sending troops, although most are Russian.
"The measures taken by the CSTO have clearly shown we will not allow the situation to be rocked at home and will not allow so-called 'color revolutions' to take place," Putin said. He added that the CSTO contingent would withdraw once order had been re-established and when Tokayev thought the forces were no longer needed.
The Kazakh leader said while order had been restored, the hunt for "terrorists" was ongoing.

A burnt-out car is seen following anti-goverment protests, outside the city administration headquarters in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Jan. 7, 2022.
Putin alleged Monday that the violent unrest in Kazakhstan was carried out by terrorists trained abroad. He said the violence bore the hallmarks of a Western-coordinated Maidan operation, a reference to the protests that toppled Ukraine's pro-Moscow leader in 2014.
"Well-organized and well-controlled groups of militants were used," Putin said at the CSTO meeting. "(They]) had obviously received training in terrorist camps abroad," he added.
The CSTO consists of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. When requesting military assistance last week, Tokayev invoked Article 4 of the CSTO pact, which commits members to assist each other to defend against "foreign interference." It was the first time that Article 4 was cited by any CSTO member.
The Russian Defense Ministry said around 3,000 paratroopers and other service personnel were being flown to Kazakhstan "around the clock," with up to 75 transport planes being used in the emergency airlift.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has questioned why Russia deployed troops. America's top diplomat said Sunday on ABC-TV's "This Week" that Kazakhstan "has the ability to maintain law and order, to defend the institutions of the state, but to do so in a way that respects the rights of peaceful protesters and also addresses the concerns that they've raised - economic concerns, some political concerns."
Demanding regime change
Sparked by a fuel price increase and cost of living grievances, the protests, which began in the oil-rich western part of the country, rapidly escalated this week into the worst violence Kazakhstan has seen since its independence 30 years ago.
Grievances over fuel prices voiced initially by the protesters grew into a much bigger threat against the government after dozens of people died when Kazakh armed forces opened fire into the crowd.
Demonstrators have demanded regime change and the departures of Tokayev and the country's 81-year-old former leader Nursultan Nazarbayev, who stepped down two years ago after nearly three decades in power. Nazarbayev, who retained the official title of "leader of the nation," is still believed to rule behind the scenes. Protesters reference him with chants of "Get out, old man."
The demonstrations prompted Tokayev to dismiss his Cabinet and Nazarbayev from his position as head of the country's security council. Authorities also announced the arrest of Karim Massimov, former head of the National Security Committee, on suspicion of high treason.

In Russia, Rakisheva registered only three companies established in 2006: SAT LLC (real estate management), Sat-Moscow LLC (real estate agency) and Sat Oil LLC (motor fuel trade).
So, OOO "Sat" through a chain of companies and personalities is associated with both "Gangam Style" Ltd. Jeanne Kim (now all of her companies are rewritten to other persons), and directly from LLC "The Fifth Element", owning the restaurant Elements.
"Sat-Moscow" LLC is also associated with Budantsev, the "Dictatorship of the Law". With Budantsev, however, Mahmudov was also linked through TKH-Invest.
And what is most interesting, and Kim herself - her "Gangam Style" LLC and Keanu LLC also found the intersection points with the Dictatorship of Law.

Extra piece on Andrew:
The British prince Andrew received 4 million pounds as a "kickback" for helping to organize a deal worth 385 million pounds through Kenes Rakishev. This news from the filing of mega-popular in the UK newspaper Daily Mail blew up public opinion.
But what actually happened was that it was able to thoroughly "shake" the British throne? Nothing special, if you look from the point of view of Kazakhstani practice. Two companies - Greek and Swiss - formed a consortium, which decided to start construction of water pipes and sewerage in Almaty and Astana. In the process, we decided to seek consultations with Prince Andrew, who already earned a reputation as a "specialist in Kazakhstan." As a result, a commission was formed for the Prince for a consultation - one percent.
After receiving the good, Prince Andrew asked for support from Kazakhstan businessman Kenec Rakishev, who quickly arranged for the royal person several meetings with the heads of Astana and Almaty. And 4 million pounds migrated into the pockets of the royal man.

Former Kazakhstan uranium czar:
Mukhtar Dzakishev suspects he was jailed because of his opposition to the Russian takeover of a Toronto-based uranium company with connections to Bill Clinton
His arrest is widely believed to have been a politically motivated act by the strong-arm Nursultan Nazarbayev government.
Trump and his supporters are trying to revive controversy over the Obama administration's 2010 approval of the sale of Uranium One , which owns an American uranium mine.
They allege that Hillary Clinton, as secretary of state, paved the way for the Toronto-based firm's transfer to a Russian state corporation as pay-back for largely Canadian donations to the Clinton charitable foundation.

The Nazarbayev Billions: How Kazakhstan's 'Leader of the Nation' Controls Vast Assets Through Charitable Foundations
A private jet worth over $100 million. Banks and TV channels. Billions in cash. Some of Kazakhstan's most luxurious hotels, multiple shopping centers, and a golf course. But also less glamorous possessions: warehouses, a pasta factory, and at one point, even a landscaping company.
There is no obvious connection between all of these businesses and assets, which are worth at least $8 billion. But the person behind all of them is Kazakhstan's longtime leader Nursultan Nazarbayev.
The system barely changed after Nazarbayev resigned from the presidency in 2019.
He installed a hand-picked successor, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and retained control of the security council.
President Tokayev: announced on January 5 that he had taken over Nazarbayev's role as head of the security council.
Nazarbayev himself has hardly been heard from since the unrest began, and his political influence may be at its end. What will happen to his billions is still unclear.

Turkey Helped Instigate Uprising In Kazakhstan To Advance "Great Turan" Project
Ankara is seemingly more emboldened than ever as early signs show that the bloody unrest that engulfed Kazakhstan had significant Turkish involvement, not only through its intelligence services, but also through Kazakhstan's Turkey-oriented politicians and business community.
The Kazakh elite, led by its leader Nursultan Nazarbayev, expedited the development of multilateral relations and established an alliance with Ankara. This alliance was cultivated under the formula of a "multi-vector course", with inspiration of a supranational entity called "Great Turan."
"Great Turan" is a relatively new concept born out of fringe nationalist movements that opposed the Russian Empire and Soviet Union. It was also propelled in Turkey by Kemalist ideology to Turkify Anatolian Muslims and Christians alike. Today, one of the greatest champions of a "Great Turan" - the ideology of unifying Turkic-speaking people from the Balkans to Siberia and Xinjiang, is Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an.
It is recalled that when speaking to the Organization of Turkic States, Erdo?an said: "Turkistan is our ancestral home, our main hearth. We are a very large family of 300 million people who speak the same language, believe in the same religion, have the same history, culture, share the same civilization. I know that our Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uzbek, Tajik and Turkmen brothers look at Turkey the same way we do. They consider Turkey their home."
Turkey has consistently worked towards this "Great Turan" project since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire left the country as a rump state in Anatolia. First was the 1939 grab of Liwa Iskenderun, now Hatay Province, from Syria. Then there was the 1974 invasion of northern Cyprus. The 2010's saw more areas of northern Syria occupied by Turkey. Next was Turkey's direct assistance to Azerbaijan's 2020 invasion of Nagorno-Karabakh as the two country's share the ideology of "one nation, two states. "Azerbaijan is important for Turkey as it is the country's gateway to Central Asia and its riches, especially Kazakhstan with its innumerable natural resources. Uranium ore deposits alone, as an example, are estimated at more than 40% of the world's total.
For Ankara to become a dominant force in Central Asia, it must break Russia's influence, and in this way has been engaged in a number of projects to propel this. This includes encouraging Kazakhstan's switch from the Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet. Also, about a hundred mosques and madrasahs have been built in Kazakhstan with Turkish funding to Islamize the country and break it from its Soviet-era secularism.
More than 200 officers of the Kazakh army graduated from Turkish military institutions. Annually, hundreds of Kazakh military personnel, including the highest echelon of the military leadership, are sent to Turkey to improve their professional training for short-term courses. In recent years, Kazakhstan has actively purchased Turkish-made infantry fighting and armored vehicles, and is keen to purchase bayraktar drones.

Kazakhstan Investigates How Peaceful Demonstrations Turned Violent
Rioting and looting erupted amid demonstrations over fuel prices; government and picketers alike see criminals involved
For three days early this month, protests in Kazakhstan triggered by fuel-price rises remained largely peaceful. Demonstrators in cities across the country sang the national anthem, remonstrated with officials, and chanted "old man out," referring to their longtime potentate, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Then, as night fell on Jan. 5, new groups took over the streets of Almaty, the largest city: young men wielding guns, sledgehammers and makeshift weapons. They stormed official buildings, attacked police and torched cars. They breached the airport and ransacked it. They raided banks and looted shops.
The chaos shook the government and prompted President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to request Russian troops to help restore order, handing Moscow renewed influence in its Central Asian neighbor.
Mr. Tokayev and his protector, Russian President Vladimir Putin, say their forces have largely re-established control. But a central conundrum remains: How did mostly peaceful protests explode into violence?
The government and protesters more or less agree on one point: Peaceful demonstrations were hijacked by violent criminals.
Mr. Tokayev says the forces were armed terrorists and bandits, some of whom were trained abroad, seeking to destabilize the country and effect a coup. He hasn't said who exactly he believes was behind the violence, but authorities have detained the powerful former security-service chief on suspicion of treason. Some analysts say the violence was triggered by high-level infighting between the president and men close to his predecessor, Mr. Nazarbayev, who served as president for nearly three decades before appointing Mr. Tokayev as his successor in 2019. As power slipped away from Mr. Nazarbayev's camp, they said, fighting spilled into the streets.
Some civil-rights groups blame the government, saying authorities ignored people's grievances, leading the protests to spiral out of control and allowing criminals to take advantage.
Wherever the truth lies, the explosion points to a potentially grim future for Kazakhstan's long-beleaguered opposition, which has campaigned for broad political change. Mr. Tokayev has blamed media and activists for fomenting the violence, although his government pledged not to crack down on them.
"We hope for a peaceful outcome of events and the punishment of criminals, and not of peaceful residents and peaceful protesters," the civil-rights group "Oyan, Qazaqstan!," or "Wake up, Kazakhstan!" wrote on its Facebook page. "We call for the blame for what happened not to be laid on independent media, rights defenders and activists."
Kazakh authorities said they detained nearly 1,700 people on Wednesday in connection with the unrest, bringing the total to some 12,000, according to the Associated Press.
Initial protests in western Kazakhstan were sparked by a rapid rise in the price of a kind of gas used as an inexpensive car fuel. They began on Jan. 2 in Zhanaozen, an oil town where more than a dozen demonstrators were shot in 2011 amid protests over low wages and poor working conditions.
Mr. Tokayev, who promised to listen to people's complaints after he was selected to succeed Mr. Nazarbayev, dispatched a government delegation to speak with protesters. But demonstrations were already spreading to other industrial cities in the region and taking on a more political character.
Some were calling for the ouster of Mr. Tokayev and Mr. Nazarbayev, who continues to hold significant sway.
Mr. Nazarbayev built an authoritarian system that opponents said was corrupt, allowed little room for dissent and diverted the spoils of the country's rich natural resources to people close to him rather than the impoverished population. Mr. Nazarbayev denied that. Mr. Tokayev, a former prime minister, promised political and economic overhauls, but made largely cosmetic changes.
In Almaty, Kazakhstan's cultural and business hub, protesters from various opposition and civil-society groups gathered in the afternoon of Jan. 4. By the evening, the crowd had swelled to several thousand people.
Police moved forcefully to detain protesters, using flashbang grenades, tear gas and charging into crowds to grab people and remove them to vans. Some fought back, scuffling with law enforcement and, in at least one incident, chasing away army vehicles.
"The government will not fall," Mr. Tokayev said. He imposed a curfew that night.

Russian Troops to Start Withdrawing From Kazakhstan in 2 Days, Says Kazakh President
Troops from a Russia-aligned group who flew to Kazakhstan last week following serious unrest in the Central Asian nation will start withdrawing in two days after completing its mission, the president announced on Tuesday.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev requested help from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a military alliance of six former Soviet states, for international support on Jan. 6 after nationwide protests erupted into violence.
"The primary mission of the CSTO peacekeeping forces has been successfully completed," Tokayev said during a session broadcast live on state television.
"The gradual withdrawal of the CSTO peacekeeping contingent will commence in two days," the president went on to say. "The process of withdrawing the contingent will take no longer than 10 days."
The mostly Russian troops were deployed to Kazakhstan as the country faced the worst public unrest since the former Soviet nation gained independence around three decades ago.
Tokayev said in his request for aid that military assistance was necessary to help overcome a "terrorist threat." Thus far, Kazakh police have detained more than 9,000 people in the unrest that has seen 164 people officially killed, the country's interior ministry reported.
According to unconfirmed reports on social media sites such as Twitter, the actual death toll is much higher, as government forces implemented Tokayev's order to "shoot to kill, without warning."
Nationwide protests, which started on Jan. 2 in the city of Zhanaozen in Kazakhstan's Mangistau region, began in response to an increase in the price cap for propane gas to 120 tenge (27 cents), from 2021's price of 60 tenge (14 cents).
On Tuesday, Tokayev appointed a new prime minister, Alikhan Smailov, with a view to "developing a government framework for action for 2022 within three weeks."
Kazakhstan's government resigned last week in what was seen as one of several concessions aimed at mollifying the protesters, along with a 180-day cap on fuel prices and the ouster of Nursultan Nazarbayev, the country's former longtime leader, from his influential post as head of the National Security Council.
Nazarbayev stepped down as president in March 2019 after thirty years as the leader but has continued to maintain control over the ruling party Nur Otan until Dec. 2, 2021.

Early life and education
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was born to a Kazakh Muslim family in the city of Alma-Ata (now Almaty). His father, Kemel Tokayev (1923-1986), was a World War II veteran and a well-known writer who is considered to be the founder of Kazakh detective fiction. His mother, Turar Shabarbayeva (1931-2000), worked at the Alma-Ata Institute of Foreign Languages. He was named after his uncle Kemel Tokayev, who was also a Red Army soldier and was killed during the Battle of Rzhev. When describing the impact the war had on his father, Tokayev said that he "did not like to talk about the war" and only shared his feelings upon "his first encounter with the enemy, the courage of the average soldier, and his burning desire to return home." Kemel after the war received a medal for his coverage of the development of the Virgin Lands campaign.
Tokayev spent part of his childhood in the village of K?lpe , where his family had lived for generations. From 1970, Tokayev attended the Moscow State Institute of International Relations where he studied Mandarin. In his fifth year, Tokayev was sent to training courses at the Soviet embassy in China for six months.
Early career
Upon graduation from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1975, Tokayev joined the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he was posted to the Soviet Embassy in Singapore.
In 1979, Tokayev returned to the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1983, he went to China for training courses at the Beijing Language Institute. In 1984-1985, he served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was then posted to the Soviet embassy in Beijing where he served until 1991 as Second Secretary, First Secretary, and Counsellor. In 1991, he enrolled at the Soviet Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow for a training course towards senior diplomats.
Political career
Deputy Foreign Minister (1992-1994)
In March 1992, Tokayev was appointed as a Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan. From there, he briefly took stance against nuclear disarmament in the former Soviet republics of Belarus and Ukraine under pressure by Russia, letting negotiations to be held under the United Nations Security Council, writing it as "a significant success of Kazakh diplomacy, which was taking its first steps in the international arena, opened the way for further negotiations with all influential states at the highest level."
In 1993, he became First Deputy Foreign Minister and on 13 October 1994, Tokayev was appointed to the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Prime Minister of Kazakhstan (1999-2002)
Main article: Tokayev Cabinet
Tokayev with Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin, 19 January 2000
In March 1999, Tokayev was promoted to the post of Deputy Prime Minister. In October 1999, with the endorsement of the Parliament, he was appointed as a Prime Minister by Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. During his tenure, the GDP growth rate grew by 13.5% in 2001 while the inflation rate being reduced by 11.2%.
On 20 November 2001, at the Khabar Agency broadcast, Tokayev threatened to resign from his post as the PM unless President Nursultan Nazarbayev would dismiss several government officials whom he accused of being "intriguers" such as Deputy PM Oraz Jandosov, Labour and Social Protection of the Population Minister Alikhan Baimenov, Pavlodar Regional ?kim Galymzhan Zhakiyanov and Deputy Defense Minister Janat Ertlesova by trying to decentralise the country's executive branch and slow down the democratization programs. The move came just days after a group of prominent Kazakh officials whom Tokayev accused and others announced the creation of Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan at a press conference. As a result, six cabinet members, including Jandosov, Zhakiyanov and Ertlesova were dismissed by Nazarbayev.
On 28 January 2002, Tokayev resigned from his post without a full explanation, calling it a "normal event" due to "a strong presidency". He was subsequently appointed as a State Secretary and Minister of Foreign Affairs concurrently.

Clearly the elections are bullshit there and it is just one jew handing off power to another jew.
Now the fucked up thing is that President Tokayev called for Russian troops to help the current military keep order. The Russian military is over there now and is LEADING the Russian/Kazakhstan military alliance to keep order. Did Tokayev just hand the keys to the kingdom over to Putin?

Ex-Kazakh security chief arrested on suspicion of 'high treason'
Recently sacked head of the national security agency is among detainees
Karim Masimov, the former chief of Kazakhstan's National Security Committee (KNB) was arrested earlier this week along with other unidentified suspects as part of a probe into "high treason," the security agency said on Saturday.
The KNB had launched a pre-trial investigation on January 6, it said in a statement, adding that its former chairman, Masimov, and others had been arrested and placed in pre-trial detention on the same day. The agency provided no further details on the case, citing the ongoing investigation.
A veteran politician, Masimov, had served as the head of the KNB from 2016 almost until his detention. He was sacked by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on January 5, amid an outbreak of violence in Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty, where rioters stormed and ransacked government buildings and set them on fire.
Over the past week, Kazakhstan has seen unprecedented protests, which were sparked by surging fuel prices. The demonstrations turned violent and quickly spiraled into large-scale riots that affected several of the nation's regions. The riots, which Kazakh officials blamed on "bandits and terrorists," have resulted in dozens being killed, both civilians and law enforcement agents. Almost 4,000 people had been detained as of Friday.
On Friday, Tokayev claimed that constitutional order had been "mainly restored" in all the regions. Earlier, a former aide to Kazakhstan's first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, said the crisis had been prompted by a number of high-ranking officials, including security officers, whom he accused of "betraying" the nation.
The aide, Ermukhamet Ertysbayev, who also once served as the culture minister, described the violent riots as a "coup attempt" and an "armed insurrection" that would have been impossible without there having been "treason by top government and law enforcement officials." He did not name any individual in particular, however.
Masimov himself was a close ally of Nazarbayev. He served as the nation's prime minister twice - between 2007 and 2012 as well as between 2014 and 2016 - and headed up the presidential office between 2012 and 2014.
Meanwhile, the KNB has dismissed reports about the arrest of Masimov's first deputy, Lieutenant General Samat Abish. The agency called such reports a "provocation." Abish is Nazarbayev's nephew.

The Nur Otan (Kazakh: ??? ????, romanized: N?r Otan, lit.?'Radiant Fatherland' or 'Light of the Fatherland', NO) is a big tent political party in Kazakhstan. Being the largest to date, it has been the ruling party of the country since 1999, with a membership claiming to be of over 762,000 people in 2007.[6] Under leadership of former president Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Nur Otan has constantly won Kazakhstan's presidential and national parliamentary elections, more often in recent history with a supermajority number of votes amidst claims of rigging and lack of viable opposition.[7][8]
Originally founded on 12 February 1999 as simply Otan (Kazakh: ????, lit.?'Fatherland') by former Prime Minister Sergey Tereshchenko, after the merger of several previously independent pro-presidential parties, including the People's Union of Kazakhstan Unity, the Liberal Movement of Kazakhstan, and the "For Kazakhstan - 2030" Movement. From there, the Otan eventually absorbed other parties such as the Democratic Party, People's Cooperative Party, Asar, and more recently the Civic and Agrarian parties in 2006 to become the biggest, gaining status of the party of power. In the 2007 legislative elections, the Nur Otan swept all the contested seats in the lower-house Mazhilis, leaving no other parties to have representation until 2012, though leaving its dominant-party control of the Parliament.[citation needed] Nazarbayev resigned as party chairman in November 2021 and is succeed by current President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.[9]
The Nur Otan has been viewed as a secular, conservative,[10] catch-all party[11] with an authoritarian form of governance that functions by its branches throughout the country and presence within nationwide institutional resources and maintains offices in all 16 of Kazakhstan's administrative divisions, as well as 241 local offices which greatly contribute to the party's existence.[12][13] The Nur Otan itself views as a party of promoting agendas for future reforms in civil service, economic diversity, open government, rule of law, and nationalism.[13]

Kazakhstan arrests ex-intelligence agency chief for treason
Ex-intelligence chief Karim Massimov was fired earlier in the week as protests raged across the Central Asian country.
Authorities now said Massimov and several other officials have been detained. The protests also prompted President Tokayev to remove his predecessor Nursultan Nazarbayev as head of the Security Council.

NSO Spyware Found on Activists' Phones in Kazakhstan
December 9th, 2021
The phones of at least four activists who are critical of their government in Kazakhstan were found to have been infected with software developed by Israeli spyware firm NSO Group, a forensic analysis by Amnesty International's Security Lab said Thursday. Three of the four had received prior warning from Apple at the end of November that their iPhones could have been infected by a "state-sponsored attacker." NSO's clients are usually state intelligence agencies from around the world. Its Pegasus spyware can provide clients with remote access to successfully hacked phones. Amnesty did not identify who the client could be in this case.
An NSO spokesperson told Haaretz that as "Amnesty chose to publish accusations in the media, rather than provide us with the information for the purpose of thorough investigations ... we cannot refer to an alleged report we have not seen, published by an organization that has been known for publishing false accusations against NSO."
Over the summer, an international consortium of journalists, led by Paris-based NGO Forbidden Stories in collaboration with Amnesty International's Security Lab, published a major investigation into a leak of 50,000 potential targets selected for possible snooping by NSO's clients. Reports at the time said that up to 2,000 of them were linked to Kazakhstan, with potential targets including a former prime minister and current President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Tokayev became president of the Central Asian country in 2019 after being named the successor of strongman Nursultan Nazarbayev, who nominally resigned after almost three decades' rule. Nazarbayev still retains key leadership roles and remains head of the country's security council, maintaining what Reuters terms "sweeping powers." According to Amnesty International's Security Lab, the four devices were "infected from as early as June 2021" - just as the global investigation, which Haaretz was a part of, was being published.
Amnesty's lab examined nine phones in all, and four were found to have been infected. The victims belong to a progressive civil society group called "Wake up, Kazakhstan" ("Oyan, Qazaqstan") and their phones were "infected with the spyware between 3 and 5 June 2021," Amnesty stated. It added that the "surveillance campaign continued until at least July 2021."
Apple began notifying victims at the end of November that their phones may have been compromised. Three of the four targets had received such messages but the fourth had not, indicating that there may be additional victims in Kazakhstan. The notifications followed news that the U.S.-based tech giant had filed a lawsuit against NSO, accusing it of helping its clients break into Apple's mobile software, iOS, through an "exploit" of its iMessage service. Last week, Reuters and others reported that anywhere between nine and 11 U.S. State Department officials working in Uganda and using non-U.S. phone numbers were also targeted. NSO has recently been blacklisted by the U.S. Department of Commerce, along with another Israeli cyberware firm called Candiru. NSO was likely placed on the U.S. blacklist because its software was allegedly used by one of its clients to target the U.S. officials.
Historically, some of its best-known clients have included Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Mexico. Israel's Defense Ministry must approve export licenses for NSO - which has close ties to Israel's defense and intelligence communities - in order for it to sell its technology globally. In a statement given to Reuters, the Israeli Embassy in Washington said the targeting of U.S. officials would be a serious breach of its rules. "Cyber products like the one mentioned are supervised and licensed to be exported to governments only for purposes related to counterterrorism and severe crimes," an embassy spokesperson said. "The licensing provisions are very clear and if these claims are true, it is a severe violation of these provisions." Kazakhstan is in the midst of a crackdown on social media, claiming recently that it had reached a deal with Facebook's Meta to allow it to take down posts. Meta denied the claim, which came as the country advanced "data localization" legislation that would allow such actions.

Israel-Kazakhstan: Celebrating 30 years of cooperation - opinion
Dec 16, 2021
The Republic of Kazakhstan is currently celebrating its 30th year of independence, after parting ways with the USSR. On this occasion, Israel is also celebrating 30 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Many of us think about Kazakhstan as one of the countries that in the past was an integral part of Motherland Russia. At best, many Israelis see Kazakhstan as a tourist destination that they might one day visit after they've exhausted all the other more popular and familiar options. Such an image, however, does this country a grave injustice. One is a small country, while the other is huge. Nineteen million people live in Kazakhstan, and it is one of the least populated countries that was formerly part of the former Russian empire. Covering over 2.7 million sq.km., Kazakhstan is almost as large as all of Europe - an entire world all on its own. Kazakhstan shares a 6,500 km. border with Russia, a 1,500 km. border with China, a 2,300 km. border with Uzbekistan, and a 1,000 km. border with Kyrgyzstan.
This vast area is 140 times as large as the State of Israel and is home to thousands of streams and rivers, seven of which are over 1,000 km. long, as well as 48,000 lakes. The country is rich in natural resources, which are almost unlimited. It has within its borders billions of tons of oil and over 1.8 trillion cu.m. of natural gas. Moreover, 20% of the earth's uranium reserves are located in Kazakhstan. These statistics are undoubtedly impressive and excite the imagination, and yet they fail to offer a clear picture of this country, the lifestyle of its population and its status vis-?-vis Asia, Europe, and to a large extent the rest of the world. It certainly does not reflect the potential relationship it could have with the State of Israel. From Kazakhstan's first day as an independent state, the person who is rightly considered the father of the nation, Nursultan Nazarbayev, was intent on establishing full and intensive diplomatic relations with Israel. This relationship has only grown stronger over the years. The hand of Nazarbayev, who served longer than any other head of state of the other former Soviet republics, is evident in almost every aspect of this relationship. There still remains tremendous potential for the two countries to reach full economic cooperation in the areas of technological and agricultural development, as well as in many other areas. This is the challenge these two countries will be facing for the foreseeable future.
In contrast with leaders of other neighboring countries, and although his regime in Kazakhstan was completely stable, president Nazarbayev resigned a couple of years ago, and was replaced by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. It's true, Kazakhstan's political structure might not resemble the democratic model that is normally found in Western countries; however, the country does enjoy impressive internal calmness and social stability, which has enabled it to become an economic power. Most importantly, it has shown a desire to join the global community and to be a tolerant country striving for progress, accelerated modernity, and an improved quality of life for its citizens. The most obvious example of this effort is Kazakhstan's capital city, formerly called Astana and whose name was recently changed to Nur-Sultan, after the country's first president who ruled Kazakhstan from its creation.
IN TERMS of political rules of the game, some might turn a blind eye to the lack of more aggressive political competition in Kazakhstan. Someone who compares it with the political culture in Israel, or with other countries that were part of the Soviet Union, might not necessarily like the dominant role Nazarbayev played. There still remains tremendous potential for the two countries to reach full economic cooperation in the areas of technological and agricultural development, as well as in many other areas.

Hot off the enemy's (Israel) press:
Is Kazakhstan Russia's Next Ukraine?
JANUARY 5, 2022
With Russian troops massing on Ukraine's borders, it's not only Ukrainians who worry about what President Vladimir Putin may have in store for them. It's Kazakhs too. For now, Kazakhs don't have to be immediately concerned about Russian troop movements. What unsettles them is years of Russian rhetoric, spearheaded by Putin's repeated comments. In his annual news conference, Putin used an unrelated question posed by Kazakhstan TV last month to remind his audience that "Kazakhstan is a Russian-speaking country in the full sense of the word." Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov charged that xenophobia had sparked several attacks on Russian speakers in Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan shares a 6,846-kilometre-long border with Russia, which is the world's second-longest frontier. The country hosts a Russian minority that accounts for 20 percent of the population. Ethnic Russians carry their empathy for the motherland on their sleeves.
Dariga Nazabayeva, a member of the Kazakh parliament and daughter of former president Nursultan Nazarbayev, who has a close relationship with Putin, shot back that "cases of xenophobia sometimes occur in Russia too." Putin demonstrated his friendship with Nazarbayev when he sent doctors to treat the former Kazakh leader after he was infected by Covid-19. In recent years, some far-right, ultra-nationalist ideologues have been calling for the return of Russian rule to Central Asia, and the carving up of Kazakhstan.
"One can label calling ethnic Russians in Kazakhstan a Diaspora as a political mistake, for these are our lands which have been temporarily torn away from Russia," said Pavel Shperov, a former ultra-nationalist member of the Russian parliament while he was still a deputy. "Borders are not eternal. We will return to the borders of the Russian state," he added.
An informal poll in Ridder, a predominantly ethnic Russian coal-mining town on eastern Kazakhstan's border with Russia, suggested several years ago that up to three-quarters of the city's mostly ethnic Russian population favored becoming part of Russia. Putin first sent a chill down Kazakh spines seven years ago, when a student in a news conference asked him nine months after the annexation of Crimea whether Kazakhstan risked a fate similar to that of Ukraine. Echoing a widespread perception among ethnic Russians that Russia had civilized central Asia's nomadic steppes, Putin noted that then-president Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan's Soviet-era Communist party boss, had "performed a unique feat: he has created a state on a territory where there has never been a state. The Kazakhs never had a state of their own, and he created it."

Powerful ex-leader Nazarbayev is main target of Kazakhs' anger
Nursultan Nazarbayev, stripped on Wednesday of his role as head of Kazakhstan's powerful Security Council amid violent street protests, has dominated his vast oil-producing Central Asian nation since before the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Some protesters have chanted slogans against the 81-year-old former president during days of unrest https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/kazakhstan-government-resigns-after-violent-protests-over-fuel-price-2022-01-05 triggered by a fuel price rise that on Wednesday brought the Cabinet's resignation.
Despite quitting the presidency in 2019 and bequeathing power to a hand-picked successor, Nazarbayev remained the real power in the land. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced in a televised address on Wednesday that he would now head the State Security Committee but made no mention of Nazarbayev, who has not been seen or heard from for days.
Nazarbayev ruled Kazakhstan with an iron hand for nearly three decades, attracting hundreds of billions of dollars of foreign investment in the energy and metal sectors and skilfully balancing ties with powerful neighbours Russia and China.
In 2010 he was given the title "Leader of the Nation" after parliament granted him immunity from prosecution and the right to shape policy even after retirement.
He also built a new capital in the northern steppes, Astana, later renamed Nur-Sultan in his honour.

Former Kazakhstan uranium czar blames imprisonment on sale of Clinton-linked Canadian company to Russians
Two U.S. Senate committees have recently launched investigations into the affair, though evidence of such a quid-pro-quo - or that it would in any way compromise American security - is tenuous, at best.
But in a little-known series of 2009 videos that were smuggled out of prison, Dzhakishev suggested the purchase of Uranium One by Russia's Rosatom had profound consequences for him personally.
His arrest is widely believed to have been a politically motivated act by the strong-arm Nursultan Nazarbayev government. Dzhakishev ties it to the Canadian firm's sale and a Russian drive to control uranium production in his country, developments he says he opposed while heading Kazatomprom, Kazakhstan's state-owned uranium company.

Kazakhstan unrest: Government calls for Russian help
Published 2 hours ago
Russian-led military troops will be deployed to help "stabilise" Kazakhstan amid anti-government demonstrations.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called for support from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) as nationwide unrest escalates.
The protests were first sparked by rising fuel prices, but have broadened to include other political grievances.
President Tokayev claimed the unrest was the work of foreign-trained "terrorist gangs".
However, Kate Mallinson, an expert on Central Asia at the foreign affairs think tank Chatham House in London, said the protests are "symptomatic of very deep-seated and simmering anger and resentment at the failure of the Kazhak government to modernise their country and introduce reforms that impact people at all levels".
The president has imposed a nationwide state of emergency that includes an overnight curfew and a ban on mass gatherings and has vowed a tough response to the protests.
In a televised speech in the early hours of Thursday, he said he had sought help from the CSTO - a military alliance made up of Russia and five ex-Soviet states to help stabilise the country.
Later on Wednesday the CSTO's chairman, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, confirmed in a statement on Facebook that the alliance would send peacekeeping forces "for a limited period of time".
The US State Department said it is "closely following" the situation in Kazakhstan, with a spokesman urging restraint by authorities and protesters alike.
BACKGROUND: Kazakhstan country profile
CONTEXT: Rare protests in a country that bans dissent
President Tokayev is only the second person to lead Kazakhstan since it declared independence in 1991. His election, in 2019, was condemned by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) as showing scant respect for democratic standards.
Much of the anger on the streets, however, seems to have been aimed at his predecessor, Nursultan Nazarbayev, who has held a powerful national security role since stepping down. On Wednesday, he was fired in a bid to subdue the growing unrest.
Protesters had been heard chanting Mr Nazarbayev's name, while a video showing people attempting to pull down a giant bronze statue of the former leader has been shared online. According to BBC Monitoring, the now-dismantled monument appears to have stood in Taldykorgan, Mr Nazarbayev's home region.
Staff at Kazakhstan's main airport had to flee anti-government demonstrators, who have also targeted government buildings.
Protesters gathered at the mayor's office in Almaty before eventually storming it. Videos on social media showed a plume of smoke rising from the building, while gunfire could also be heard.
The city's police chief, Kanat Taimerdenov, said "extremists and radicals" had attacked 500 civilians and ransacked hundreds of businesses.
Water cannon were used against protesters in the western city of Aktobe. There are reports that security forces have sided with protesters in some places.
However, getting a clear picture of what is happening in the central Asian nation is proving difficult. The interior ministry released figures of reported casualties among the security forces, but there were no equivalent reports of any injuries or deaths among protesters amid what monitoring groups have described as a "nation-scale internet blackout".
Other attempts to end the protests, which began on Sunday when the government lifted the price cap on liquefied petroleum gas which many people use to power their cars, causing it to double in cost, have been made.
As well as Mr Nazarbayev's dismissal, the entire government has resigned.

PHOTO: Joe Biden Meets Hunter Biden's Business Associate from Kazakhstan
A photograph has emerged showing former Vice President Joe Biden posing with oligarch Kenes Rakishev of Kazakhstan, who once reportedly explored business with Biden's son, Hunter Biden.
The photo (above), first published last year at an anti-corruption website called the Kazhakhstani Initiative on Asset Recovery (KIAR), purports to show Hunter Biden and Joe Biden, together with Kazakhstan's former prime minister, Karim Massimov, at far right.
At far left, the photo shows Kenes Rakishev, described as "a relative and junior partner of [oligarch] Timur Kulibayev."
Rakishev's personal website identifies him as an "international businessman, investor and entrepreneur." It adds that he is "regarded as one of the most influential businessmen in Kazakhstan," with "business interests spanning technology, oil & gas, finance, shipbuilding, and metals & mining industries."
Rakishev and Hunter Biden once reportedly explored business opportunities together. The UK Daily Mail reported Oct. 16:
The Mail can reveal that between 2012 and 2014, Hunter worked as a sort of go-between for Kenes Rakishev, a self-styled 'international businessman, investor and entrepreneur' with close family connections to the kleptocratic regime of his homeland's despotic former president Nursultan Nazarbayev.
...
Emails passed to this newspaper via anti-corruption campaigners from the Central Asian country reveal that Biden Jr held extensive meetings with Rakishev, who was looking to invest a portion of his personal fortune in New York and Washington DC. He also travelled to the Kazakh capital of Astana to hold business discussions.
Hunter Biden then attempted to persuade Rakishev to buy into a Nevadan mining company, brokering a series of meetings with the firm, before convincing him to invest a cool million dollars with Alexandra Forbes Kerry, the film-maker daughter of Democrat Senator and former Presidential candidate John Kerry.
The Daily Mail also reported that Hunter Biden and Rakishev became friends, and that Hunter Biden traveled to Astana (now Nur-Sultan), the capital of Kazakhstan. The two also "dined together at luxury restaurants in New York and Washington DC," the Daily Mail noted.
Rakishev was recently named in a U.S. Senate report into Hunter Biden's foreign business activities, which noted that the oligarch gave $142,300 to Devon Archer, Hunter Biden's business partner, ostensibly for a car:
Archer received $142,300 from Kenges Rakishev of Kazakhstan, purportedly for a car, the same day [in 2014] Vice President Joe Biden appeared with Ukrainian Prime Minister Arsemy Yasenyuk and addressed Ukrainian legislators in Kyiv regarding Russia's actions in Crimea.

Hunter Biden 'worked as go-between' for Kazakh oligarch with links to Prince Andrew who called ex-VP's son 'my brother'
HUNTER Biden worked as go-between for a Kazakh oligarch with links to Prince Andrew - who called the ex-VP's son '"my brother", it was claimed today.
The second son of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden reportedly worked for international businessman Kenes Rakishev.
The Kazakh investor and entrepreneur has close family connections to former president Nursultan Nazarbayev - a dictator accused of human rights abuses.
Nazarbayev is the father-in-law of Timur Kulibayev - an oligarch it was once claimed Prince Andrew sold his £15million former home for £3m over asking price.
And the Daily Mail today claimed Biden Jr held extensive meetings with Rakishev.
It was reported that the meetings were organised to discuss the oligarch's hopes to invest cash in New York and Washington DC.
It was claimed the 50-year-old Biden Jr even travelled to Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, to discuss opportunities.
In one apparently leaked email, Biden Jr said: "'I wanted to check in with you and see what our next steps are to follow up on our visit to Kazakhstan."
During their working relationship, it was claimed the pair would exchange messages with Rakishev writing texts to Biden Jr calling him "my brother from another mother".
The paper, who said emails had been passed to them via anti-corruption campaigners from the Central Asian country, also said Biden Jr had tried to get Rakishev to buy into a mining company in Nevada.
The oligarch finally invested $1million with Alexandra Forbes Kerry.
Rakishev was named in 2012 as one of the top 15 "most influential" tycoons in Kazakhstan.

Prince Andrew, the oligarchs and a new bombshell for Joe Biden: America's convulsed over pictures of the former vice president's son. But as GUY ADAMS uncovers his links to a suspect regime (and the Duke of York) just how much damage can he cause?
By GUY ADAMS FOR THE DAILY MAIL
PUBLISHED: 17:16 EDT, 16 October 2020 | UPDATED: 08:27 EDT, 17 October 2020
Hunter Biden is a 50-year-old American lawyer whose elderly father Joe hopes in just over a fortnight to unseat Donald Trump at the U.S. Presidential election. He's also a twice-married father of five kids (one via a fleeting affair with a former stripper) who has struggled with cocaine and alcohol addiction for most of his adult life and in 2014, when his dad was Barack Obama's Vice President, managed to get booted out of the U.S. Naval Reserve for failing a drug test.
This week saw a vintage 'October surprise' when the New York Post obtained footage of Hunter variously: lying in bed smoking a crack pipe; reclining in the bath with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth; and starring in a 12-minute mobile phone video that, in the newspaper's words, saw him hoofing class A narcotics 'while engaged in a sex act with an unidentified woman'.
Most sensationally - if you believe the Trump camp, that is - it also published leaked emails that appear to implicate Joe in long-standing controversy over his son's rackety business career. To understand why, you must first know that Biden Jr has for years been criticized for his lucrative but ethically questionable work overseas, which has often created apparent conflicts of interest with Joe's official roles.
For example, in 2014, when Joe, as Vice President, was helping to implement U.S. policy in Ukraine, Hunter took a highly-paid job with a Ukranian energy company called Burisma (of which more later).
Around the same time, he built murky and contentious connections with Russia, helping his investment advisory firm Rosemont Seneca receive some $3.5m from the billionaire widow of former Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhov (best known on these shores for once donating £138,000 to Sadiq Khan's Mayor's Fund for London).
Then there was a somewhat dubious episode in China, where Hunter arranged for an entrepreneur called Jonathan Li, with whom he was setting up an investment fund, to hold a meeting (and enjoy a very public handshake) with Joe in a Beijing hotel lobby during an official visit.
Such ventures, in regions of the world hardly known for their probity, have always smelled distinctly whiffy. So what, then, ought we to make of the revelation that, when his father was Vice President, Biden Jr was doing business in a fourth cash-soaked but highly corrupt country?
Namely: Kazakhstan.
(Nazarbayev is a name readers may be familiar with: he's the dictator famed for taking Prince Andrew on occasional goose hunts.)

Hunter Biden is facing fresh questions over business dealing in yet another nation - Kazakhstan.
Hunter Biden also traveled to the country's capital of Astana for business talks.

Rakishev, however, repeatedly ran into problems finding western business partners due to the murky origins of his wealth. The respected International Finance Corp. pulled out a planned deal with him over "liabilities" stemming from his connections to the country's rulers.
As in other nations like Ukraine and China where Hunter plied his trade, Joe Biden may not have been far behind. The Mail published a photo they obtained from the "Kazakhstani Initiative on Asset Recovery" showing Hunter Biden with his beaming father alongside Rakishev.
Hunter Biden and Rakishev also enjoyed a long and chummy personal correspondence as well, alleged emails show.

Wow another good one from Daily Mail tonight explaining business relations between Hunter Biden, Devon Archer, Alex Forbes Kerry (John Kerry's daughter) with subtle ties to Prince Andrew. Long read, but lots info. All revolves about business dealings with a fellow named Rakishev who invested in Rosemont Seneca and overpaid for a property from Prince Andrew by $3 million over asking and more.
What tangled clusterfuck this operation must be for forensic accountants. This web is huge. I find it interesting that Steve Bing had inherited a huge sum of money and used it for "investing in the film industry" and here you have John Kerry's daughter doing the same thing. How much of hollywood is a money laundering operation?
"The Mail can reveal that between 2012 and 2014, Hunter worked as a sort of go-between for Kenes Rakishev, a self-styled 'international businessman, investor and entrepreneur' with close family connections to the kleptocratic regime of his homeland's despotic former president Nursultan Nazarbayev.
(Nazarbayev is a name readers may be familiar with: he's the dictator famed for taking Prince Andrew on occasional goose hunts.)
Buried on Page 70 of that 87-page report was the news on April 22, 2014 - just three months after the $1m film production deal was concluded - an offshore company called Novatus wired some $143,000 to Hunter Biden's own firm Rosemont Seneca, saying that the cash was 'for a car'."

My Timeline on Clinton Uranium Crimes
1/3
September 6, 2005: In Kazakhstan Canadian mining financier Frank Giustra, attended by William Jefferson Clinton, met the Kazakh president. Days later, Giustra acquired stakes in three uranium mines controlled by the Kazakh state-run uranium agency. In return, Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan's president, was supported by Clinton to head the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

This organization monitored international elections in support of democracy. One of its election watchers was one Joseph Mifsud.
https://www.ibtimes.com/kazakhstan-president-Nursultan-Nazarbayev-reelected-98-majority-vote-1897642
As Nazarbayev was a corrupt dictator, the Bush policy was against his human rights record, something Clinton's support worked against, though Hillary Clinton as senator later made noises of public criticism against Nazarbayev to cover their shady dealing. Though Kazakhstan did not meet the international election standards, Mifsud certified them as doing so.
Also in 2005, William Campbell, begins working with high Russian nuclear officials working in the U.S., and would later become an FBI informant whenthe FBI would be headed by Robert Mueller.
2007, just as Hillary Clinton had announced her run for president, Uranium One merged with a South African company in a $3.5 billion transaction. The enlarged Uranium One company gave Giustra a stake of about $45 million, after which he sold it.

April, 2007: Uranium One purchased a uranium mill in Utah and land for uranium exploration of over 38,000 acres in four Western states. Soon after, Uranium One purchased Energy Metals Corporation with uranium holdings in Wyoming. To this was added those in Texas and additional ones in Utah.

Donors to the Clinton Foundation, led on the Russian end by oligarch Viktor Vekselberg, and U.S. donors were involved. This center was nothing more than a way to make stealing technology easier on a larger scale, according to a report in 2012 by the U.S. Army after it was discovered their Hypersonic missile technology was stolen.

azakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who continues to control the Central Asian country after his sudden resignation last year, has tested positive for the coronavirus. Nazarbayev's press service said on June 18 that the former president was currently self-isolated and continued to work remotely, Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported.
The 79-year-old Nazarbayev announced his resignation in March 2019 after ruling the oil-rich former Soviet republic for almost 30 years. But he continues to lead the ruling Nur-Otan party and the country's powerful Security Council. He also enjoys the broad benefits of the title of "elbasy" - the leader of the nation. Nazarbayev's opponents say he de facto continues to run the country of 18 million by supervising the actions of incumbent President Qasym-Zhomart Toqaev.

Hunter Biden's Firms Scored Reportedly Hundreds of Millions from Russians, Chinese, and Kazakhs
Hunter Biden, son of 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden, has come under scrutiny for his business links to Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma while his father was vice president.
Now, a new book by author Peter Schweizer reveals Hunter Biden forged other business deals with individuals and entities tied with the governments of Russia, China, and Kazakhstan, that reportedly scored him hundreds of millions of dollars.
The book, titled Profiles in Corruption: Abuse of Power by America's Progressive Elite., lays out how Hunter Biden and his business partners, in addition to his numerous Rosemont-branded entities and ventures, was deeply involved with an entity called the Burnham Financial Group.
Hunter and his business partner, Devon Archer, used Burnham to make foreign deals with governments and oligarchs, according to a copy of the book viewed by Breitbart News.
One of those oligarchs included Nurlan Abduov, the associate of another Kazakh oligarch, Kenges Rakishev. Rakishev is the son-in-law of the former vice prime minister of Kazakhstan, Imangali Tasmagambetov. Tasmagamvetov was also formerly the defense minister, and is now the Kazakh ambassador to Russia.
According to the book, an account Hunter regularly received funds from showed money arriving from a firm run by Rakishev in 2014:
A Morgan Stanley investment account from which Hunter regularly received funds shows money arriving from mysterious
sources around the world. There is a $142,300 deposit in April 2014 from Kazakh oligarch-controlled Novatus Holdings. Kenges
Rakishev, whose father-in-law is the former vice prime minister of Kazakhstan and a close ally of Kazakh dictator Nursultan
Nazarbayev, runs the offshore firm.
While Burnham received funds from Kazakh oligarchs, Archer acted as a backchannel between Kazakhstan to then-Secretary of State John Kerry, according to the book. (Kerry's stepson Chris Heinz was a business partner with Biden and Archer in some of their ventures).
In a July 11, 2013, email, Kerry's chief of staff David Wade wrote to Archer:
Devon: understand you spoke to the Secretary re having him call [Kazakh] Foreign Minister Idrisov today, can you let me know topics Idrisov wants to talk about/any requests he'll have of the boss, so we can get paper prepared for a call. Hopefully, the situation on the home front will leave him time to do it.
Burnham also had business deals with two mysterious Chinese companies - Kirin Global Enterprses Limited and Harvest Global Investors, according to the book.

Nursultan: Kazakhstan renames capital Astana after ex-president
Kazakhstan has renamed its capital Astana to Nursultan to honour outgoing leader Nursultan Nazarbayev, who unexpectedly resigned on Tuesday.
The change was announced after Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was sworn in as president, promising to seek his predecessor's opinion on key decisions.
Mr Nazarbayev, 78, served nearly 30 years as leader of the oil-rich nation.
Meanwhile, his eldest daughter has been elected speaker of the upper house of parliament.
Dariga Nazarbayeva's promotion to the second most powerful position in the country raises her profile as a potential successor.
Her father, who is head of the governing party, will remain at the helm of the influential security council and will hold the formal title Leader of the Nation.
Analysts say it is too early to say who is going to run or to declare potential favourites in next year's election. Mr Tokayev and current Prime Minister Askar Mamin are also seen as possible contenders.

Kazakhstan ends bank bailouts, writes off people's debts instead
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said he'll write off bad loans held by a sixth of the central Asian country's population, while signaling a sharp change in policy to end costly state bailouts of private banks.
The loan-forgiveness program is Tokayev's first major policy announcement since he was elected president on June 9 in a choreographed transfer of power that began when longtime leader Nursultan Nazarbayev stepped down as head of state in March. His victory was met with rare and widespread protests.
Bank bailouts are also a sensitive issue in Kazakhstan, which has been mired in a decade-long crisis in which the government has pumped at least $18 billion into lenders to keep the sector from collapsing under the weight of bad debts. The central bank is conducting a review of asset quality, prompting speculation that a new round of bailouts may be in the works.
"My attitude is that there should be no governmental bailouts" for lenders, Tokayev, 66, said in an interview Tuesday in the capital, Nur-Sultan. "My assessment of this issue as a president is that the government should not get involved any more, any longer, with its loans as far as private banks are concerned."

Nazarbayev has resigned, but little will change in Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan's perennial leader since 1989, Nursultan Nazarbayev, resigned on 19 March 2019. His retirement shocked international commentators and was widely interpreted as a surprise development, marking a new era not just for this former Soviet Republic but the whole Central Asian region.

KAZAKHSTAN TO RENAME CAPITAL CITY Nursultan, AFTER AUTHORITARIAN LEADER PRAISED BY TRUMP
day after Kazakhstan's authoritarian leader Nursultan Nazarbayev resigned after 30 years in power, the country's parliament voted to rename the capital, Astana, after him.
The decision to rename Astana, a city replete with futuristic architecture in the middle of the world's largest steppe, after the only leader an independent Kazakhstan has ever known, was floated by the country's new interim President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev shortly after Nazarbayev's resignation.
President Donald Trump has praised Nazarbayev's leadership skills and said the country's transformation under his rule was a "miracle," according to the Kazakh government's readout of a phone call between the two leaders. The Kazakh leader visited the White House last year, and the two countries agreed to expand their economic ties.
Meanwhile, the organization Human Rights Watch said that Nazarbayev's Kazakhstan "heavily restricts freedom of assembly, speech, and religion, and torture remains a serious problem."
The country's lower house of parliament quickly voted in favor of the proposed name change on Wednesday, and the decision to rename Astana was made official around 24 hours after Nazarbayev surprised the world with his departure. Astana will now be named Nursultan, after the man who ruled the country from the Soviet era until the present day.
The country has already changed the name of its capital several times since it emerged as an independent nation, in the 1990s. But the decision nevertheless marks an era of change in Kazakhstan, one of the former republics of the Soviet Union whose modern identity is still forming.
"This act that is meant to honor Nazarbayev also reveals the inextricable link that developed between Kazakhstan's post-Soviet state-building, political identity, and the leader's own personal rule," Alexander Cooley, an expert on Eurasia at Columbia University's Harriman Institute, told Newsweek. "At first glance, Kazakhstan's succession plan appears to be a well-planned and sequenced transition of power; but the country faces problems of growing social inequality, uneven modernization, and an increasingly complex set of challenges in managing relations with its major neighbors Russia and China."

Despite Nazarbayev's resignation from the presidency, the 78-year-old will not disappear entirely from the public eye. He has been formally named "Leader of the Nation," and will maintain his position as the head of the country's ruling party and of Kazakhstan's security council. Tokayev, the new interim president, has pledged to consult with Nazarbayev on important matters until elections are held in April 2020.
Meanwhile, Nazarbayev's eldest daughter, Dariga Nazarbayeva, was immediately elected as the speaker of the upper house of parliament, one of the most powerful positions in the country, heightening speculation she could eventually be her father's successor.
"It's a big moment for Kazakhstan and for Central Asia," Nate Schenkkan, an expert on the former Soviet Union at the organization Freedom House, told Newsweek about Nazarbayev's resignation. "In theory it should mark a changing of the guard as the last of the precollapse leaders exits office. But in practice it looks more like the institutionalization of a new type of managed succession, whereby the exiting leader and his family maintains privileges and status, and the same elite continues to rule the country."
"Of course, nothing is guaranteed, and every transition, no matter how controlled, opens up new opportunities and risks,' Schenkkan added.

(Reuters) - Kassym-Jomart Tokayev assumed the post of Kazakhstan's president on Wednesday following the surprise resignation of veteran leader Nursultan Nazarbayev after three decades in power.
Nazarbayev, 78, resigned late on Tuesday in what appeared to be the first step in a choreographed political transition that will see him retain considerable sway.
Tokayev, a 65-year-old career diplomat fluent in Russian, English and Chinese, will serve for the rest of the term which ends in April 2020, in line with the constitution.
It remains unclear whether the Moscow-educated former prime minister will then run for the presidency. Nazarbayev praised him on Tuesday as "a man who can be trusted to lead Kazakhstan".
Nazarbayev, who has no obvious long-term successor, had run the oil-rich Central Asian nation since 1989 when it was a Soviet republic, routinely winning elections with more than 90 percent of the vote.

Kazakhstan's president announces resignation
Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced on Tuesday that he will step down after 30 years in power.
"I made a decision to resign as president," Nazarbayev, 78, said in his televised address to the nation. "This year marks 30 years since I assumed the post of the country's supreme leader. I was given the honor by my great nation to become the first president of independent Kazakhstan," Nazarbayev said.
On February 15, Kazakhstan's Constitutional Council clarified Nazarbayev's statement on Section 3 of Article 42 of the Constitution on a list of grounds for an early resignation. According to the council, the key law stipulates the right of the head of state to step down.
At the same time Nazarbayev said he will remain chairman of the Central Asian state's Security Council despite his resignation.
"In accordance with our laws, I'm given a status of the first president - the nation's leader (elbasy in Kazakh), I will remain the Security Council's chairman, who has serious powers to determine the country's domestic and foreign policy in line with the laws," Nazarbayev said in his televised address to the nation.
Nazarbayev will also remain chairman of the Nur Otan Democratic People's Party and a member of the Constitutional Council.
The Kazakh leader said he would continue taking care about the country and the people. "As the founder of an independent Kazakh state, I see my future task in ensuring the assumption of power by a new generation of leaders, who will continue carrying out current reforms in the country," he stressed.
Nazarbayev has led Kazakhstan since 1989, when it was part of the Soviet Union. In 1990, Nazarbayev was elected as the nation's first president.

Kazakhstan's leader resigns after almost 30 years in power
Nursultan Nazarbayev made it clear he will continue to play a role determining the future of the nation.
Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev declared in a shock announcement on March 19 that he was resigning with immediate effect, thereby bringing a close to his almost three decade-long rule over the Central Asian nation. In a televised address to the nation, Nazarbayev said that the speaker of the Senate, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, would take over as head of state until presidential elections can be held. The next vote is scheduled to take place in December 2020. "Tokayev is the very person that we can trust to manage Kazakhstan," Nazarbayev said. "I know him well. He is an honest, responsible and dependable person."
In his resignation speech, Nazarbayev took stock of what he said were the achievements of his decades running Kazakhstan. "We put Kazakhstan on the map where there was never such a country," said Nazarbayev. There have been growing indications that Nazarbayev might be inching toward leaving the scene. Last month, he generated heated speculation when he addressed the Constitutional Council for guidance on how he might be able to go about relinquishing office and what powers he would retain were he to do so. Even though he is stepping down as head of state, Nazarbayev will retain a wide-ranging degree of authority under his bespoke title of Leader of the Nation.
Also, parliament last May passed a law enabling Nazarbayev to remain head of the national Security Council for life. This provision was quickly approved by the constitutional court, enabling Nazarbayev to ease into the perpetual role on July 12, just days after his 78th birthday. In a parallel development, the Security Council was transformed from a purely consultative body into one with a certain degree of coordinating power over all state structures, including security agencies, ministries and local administrations.
n his resignation announcement, Nazarbayev made it clear he will continue to play a role determining the future of the nation. "I see my future task as supporting the coming to power of a new generation of leaders who will continue the transformations taking place in the country," he said.
Social media users in Kazakhstan reacted to the news with a mix of shock and, depending on their political positions, concern or delight. Irina Petrushova, a veteran journalist and critic of the government, was sanguine, however, insisting that little would change. "In reality, he has gone nowhere since he still commands three centers of influence in the country," Petrushova wrote on Facebook, before listing the Security Council, the board of directors of the Samruk-Kazyna national wealth fund and the ruling Nur Otan party. "Also, unlike Nazarbayev, Tokayev does not enjoy immunity [from prosecution]," she wrote."So yes, he left, but he has not gone far." Kate Mallinson, an analyst at London-based Prism Political Risk Management, agreed that the public should expect few dramatic shifts in policy. "Tokayev is very much a trusted and loyal lieutenant of the president's and he's unlikely to deviate from current trajectories," she told Eurasianet.

More on Chagoury
Hillary played favorites with huge number of Clinton Foundation donors
The shady Lebanese-Nigerian businessman who got Hillary Clinton's State Department to arrange a high-level meeting was only one of a dizzying number of big donors to the Clinton Foundation to score government favors.
The list includes high rollers whose relationships with the Clintons made them even richer; countries with dubious human rights records; and companies looking to grease the skids to get an edge on the competition.
Frank Giustra, a billionaire mining magnate from Vancouver, pledged $100 million to the foundation in 2005 - and then reaped a fortune from the relationship.
Giustra had dinner in 2010 with Bill and Hillary Clinton right before the Clintons met with the president of Colombia.
Shortly afterward, a company Giustra partially owned acquired the lucrative rights to conduct logging operations in an ecologically sensitive area along the Colombian coast.
Giustra and Bill Clinton also jetted off to Kazakhstan in 2005 to meet with President Nursultan Nazarbayev, and Giustra's mining company later signed a deal giving him stakes in three state-run uranium mines in the country.
The mines were acquired by the Russian atomic energy agency, Rosatom, in a deal that got State Department approval on Hillary's watch.
Gilbert Chagoury, a Lebanese-Nigerian billionaire who owns Africa's largest construction company, donated millions to the foundation and in 2009 pledged $1 billion to the Clinton Global Initiative, an offshoot.
That same year, longtime Bill Clinton aide Doug Band sent an email to two top Hillary aides at the State Department, Huma Abedin and Cheryl Mills, asking them to set up a meeting with "a substance person on Lebanon," according to emails made public Tuesday.
It wasn't long before Chagoury had an appointment with Jeffrey Feltman, the former US ambassador to Lebanon.
A rep for Clinton claimed Wednesday that Chagoury simply wanted to talk about the upcoming Lebanese election.
But Chagoury was also a key financial backer of pro-Hezbollah politician Michel Aoun, who was running for parliament on the Hezbollah-aligned bloc, according to multiple press accounts.
A close friend of Bill Clinton, Chagoury struck a plea deal on money-laundering charges in Switzerland in 2000 and was fined $66 million.
On Thursday, Chagoury's spokesman, Mark Corallo, issued a statement saying he never got to meet with Feltman.
"Ambassador Chagoury doesn't understand all of the media concern over the Clinton Global Initiative which has done so much good philanthropic work around the world - especially in Africa. He is proud to be associated with what he truly believes is a wonderful charitable organization.

President-for-life Nursultan Nazarbayev, who has run this oil-rich country since 1989, appealed to the country's rich and famous for help. Nazarbayev bluntly called on the rich to repatriate their money squirreled away in offshore accounts.
"We've raised many rich people: billionaires, millionaires. They are showing off; (their) pictures in Forbes... They look good, with makeup, well-groomed, well-dressed. But it is Kazakhstan that enabled you to earn all this money... Bring the money here. We'll forgive you," said Nazarbayev, noting that people couldn't hide because his government had agreements to exchange financial information with most of the world's countries.

According to The Times, Uranium One's involvement with the Clintons stretches back to 2005, when former President Bill Clinton accompanied Canadian mining financier Frank Giustra to Kazakhstan, where they met with authoritarian president Nursultan Nazarbayev. Going against American foreign policy at the time, Bill Clinton expressed support for Nazarbayev's bid to lead an international elections monitoring group.
Soon after, Giustra's company, UrAsia Energy (the predecessor to Uranium One) won stakes in three uranium mines controlled by Kazakhstan's state-run uranium agency. Months after the deal, Giustra reportedly donated $31.3 million to Clinton's foundation.
A source with knowledge of the Clintons' fundraising pointed out to The Times that people donate because they hope that money will buy influence. The source said: "Why do you think they are doing it - because they love them?"

Kazakhstan: Presidential daughter getting Panama-ed at a tricky time
The president urged businesspeople to repatriate offshore funds, but his relatives seem to be disregarding the call.
Chris Rickleton Jun 22, 2018
Not for the first time, Kazakhstan's ruling family has cropped up in reporting on leaked financial documents pertaining to assets stashed in offshore locations.
This time, revelations are set to focus on elder presidential daughter and senator Dariga Nazarbayeva.
With the Nazarbayev family, it is a case of "do as I say, not as I do." As he seeks to rein in chronic capital flight and retain leverage over the country's moneyed elite, 77-year-old President Nursultan Nazarbayev has regularly cajoled and menaced the country's wealthy to return their foreign-held riches to Kazakhstan.
But his own family sets a poor example.
On June 21, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project announced that it and other partner organizations in the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, or ICIJ, would be publishing a new series of stories based on leaks from the Panama-based legal firm Mossack Fonseca.
Among the featured stories will be one on Dariga Nazarbayeva, 55, Nazarbayev's most politically prominent offspring, who is sometimes mentioned as a potential successor.
According to the OCCRP, Nazarbayeva was sole shareholder of a now-inactive British Virgin Islands company called Asterry Holdings Ltd, which held a stake in sugar factories in Kazakhstan from October 2007.
That as-yet-unelaborated claim would make sense given that Dariga's side of the family has had interests in the sugar sector for some time. Her son Nurali Aliyev, for instance, was president of a group called the Sugar Center from 2004 to 2006. As it happens, Aliyev was also identified as a client of Mossack Fonseca in the first trove of company documents pored over by the ICIJ last year, with two companies and a luxury yacht having been registered under his name in the BVI.
Sure enough, the Dariga tidbit was gratefully pounced on by Nazarbayev's leading nemesis and fugitive oligarch Mukhtar Ablyazov, who posted on Facebook a mock-up image of Nazarbayeva in a yellow holiday hat set against a tropical coastline with the heading: "Is Panama Pinching You Darigusha?"
Europe-based Ablyazov was advertising a discussion on his Democratic Choice Kazakhstan movement's Telegram channel titled "Program 2020" - a reference to Kazakhstan's next presidential elections in which Dariga's father is now odds-on not to run.
Local Facebook users duly complained that the social media platform had slowed down the same evening.
Whatever the details of the leaks related to Nazarbayeva's offshore habits, she can rely on the vast majority of the Kazakh media space, where she is offered the same deference as royalty, not to pick up on them.
Even lesser servants of the state are accorded this privilege. When Sauat Mynbayev, chief executive of Kazakhstan's state-owned KazMunaiGaz oil and gas company, was said by journalists to have had interests in an offshore company that used the country's largest lender, Kazkommertsbank, as a de facto piggy bank, the silence in Kazakhstan was deafening.
Popular privately owned media websites such as Informburo.kz and Tengrinews only responded to coverage on the so-called Paradise Papers leak to print Mynbayev's denial of any wrongdoing and comments by a lawmaker from the ruling Nur Otan ruling party who said the oil chief's appearance in the leak along with other Kazakh officials had "raised questions for society."
The potential connection between the company's rapacious activity and Kazkommertsbank's subsequent financial woes was never explored at all.
Still, the negative press comes at bad time for Nazarbayeva, who is under a strengthening spotlight after colleague Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said in an interview with the BBC that he believed Nazarbayev's current presidential term would be his last.

Change of Leadership in Kazakhstan?
Kazakhstan: Senate speaker signals Nazarbayev won't run in 2020
Long-standing laws will grant Nazarbayev considerable say in running the country even after he has stepped down.
Jun 20, 2018
The speaker of Kazakhstan's parliament has dropped a political bombshell by stating in an interview that President Nursultan Nazarbayev may not run for re-election in 2020.
"He is a very wise man, he is absolutely reasonable. And I think that in 2020 we shall have presidential elections with other candidates," Tokayev told BBC's Hard Talk program in an interview aired on June 20.
Tokayev said he was expressing his own personal views in making the forecast, although it is unlikely such a senior official in Kazakhstan would issue the remarks without sanction from higher up. As speaker of the Senate, Tokayev is in formal terms only second in the hierarchy to Nazarbayev.
The date of Nazarbayev's departure from the top of Kazakhstan's political pyramid has for years been object of sustained speculation and this may be the clearest indication to date that a definitive exit strategy has been crafted.
There have been tentative signs in the recent past that a transition of sorts is in the offing.
Early in 2017, Nazarbayev, who turns 78 on July 6, issued a televised declaration nebulously outlining his desire to formally dilute the powers of the president and shift toward a more parliamentary form of government.
"The basic essence is that the president will give some of his powers to parliament and the government," he said in a January 25, 2017, address televised on all national channels. "The proposed reform is a serious redistribution of power and a democratization of the political system as a whole."
As outlined by Nazarbayev, those reforms will give the executive more powers over running the economy, while the head of state retains control over defense and foreign policy. The head of the Constitutional Council, Kairat Mami, met with Nazarbayev earlier this week to debrief him on the progress being made in progress toward overhauling the constitution, but few details were provided by the president's office on the substance of the conversation.
In the broader picture, the planned transition toward a highly consensual model of parliamentarianism indicates that Nazarbayev intends to be Kazakhstan's first and last all-powerful head of state.
Parliament is at present overwhelmingly dominated by Nazarbayev's Nur Otan party. A pair of officially sanctioned ersatz opposition parties have been allowed to occupy 14 out of the legislature's 107 seats in the directly elected lower house of parliament.
Genuinely confrontational political parties have been either sidelined into irrelevance through harassment and by being ignored by media almost entirely under the thumb of the government or banned altogether. Sensing the prospect of change at the top, some opposition activists are seeking to mobilize in order to seize the initiative in a post-Nazarbayev era, although it is unclear they possess the organizational nous or the public appeal to capitalize on the moment.
Strong legal guarantees have also been put in place for Nazarbayev in anticipation of his departure from office.
In 2010, he was proclaimed Leader of the Nation, a bespoke status endowing him with lifetime powers and immunity from prosecution. Meanwhile, it was made a criminal offense punishable by up to a year in prison to make remarks insulting Nazarbayev. And journalists publishing insulting remarks about Nazarbayev could face a maximum penalty of three years in prison.
To begin with, he made a show of disdaining the Leader of the Nation honorific, which was supposedly the autonomous initiative of lawmakers, and demanded in a performance of modesty that people stop delivering eulogies to him. But when it came time to vetoing the proposal, he disdained the opportunity.
This is all to say that even if Nazarbayev does decide to step down, he will still retain immense influence over running the country.

Report: Russia chides Kazakhstan on US cooperation
Moscow is apparently unhappy at Astana granting the U.S. access to Caspian ports for cargo transit to Afghanistan.
Jun 12, 2018
Russia's top diplomat has reportedly chided Kazakhstan over Astana's decision to provide the U.S. military with logistical assistance for its operations in Afghanistan without first consulting Moscow.
Kommersant newspaper reported that during a June 11 meeting of officials from the Collective Security Treaty Organization, or CSTO, a Moscow-led analogue of NATO, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov subjected his Kazakh counterpart, Kairat Abdrakhmanov, to a series of what the outlet called "uncomfortable questions."
Lavrov apparently made his complaints in relation to a recent agreement for Kazakhstan to allow the United States to use two of its Caspian Sea ports, Aktau and Kuryk, as transit points for shipping strictly nonmilitary material to Afghanistan. He is also said to have complained about the appearance of a U.S.-funded structure in Almaty called the Central Reference Laboratory, which is designed to research contagious animal and human diseases.
Kommersant based its report on the revelations of an unnamed member of the Russian delegation at the CSTO meeting.
Moscow appears quietly discomfited by the perception of subtle progress by Washington in cementing its influence in the region. Recent high-profile visits to Washington by President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Uzbek leader Shavkat Mirziyoyev received the kind of coverage back home never afforded to trips to Russia, which are a dime a dozen.
The initiative to get an agreement on the use of the Caspian ports appears to have been a fillip by Nazarbayev's meeting with President Donald Trump, who used the encounter to commend Astana for granting U.S. forces "continuous logistical support and access to Afghanistan." Definitive approval for this arrangement was granted in May.

China assures Kazakhstan that US trade offensive won't hit imports
Beijing's ambassador to Astana signaled that China sees three-way economic cooperation with Russia as a priority.
Almaz Kumenov Mar 29, 2018
China has pledged to boost imports from Kazakhstan and guaranteed that US moves to slap punitive tariffs on Beijing's goods will not affect the amount of metals, oil and gas it buys from the Central Asian nation.
China's ambassador to Kazakhstan, Zhang Hanhui, also signaled at a press briefing on March 27 that his country wants to consolidate economic cooperation in the region with Russia.
While the ambassador's remarks were seemingly intended primarily to reassure that increasingly hawkish trade positions adopted by Washington would not have a deleterious knock-on effect in Kazakhstan, they also signaled that China has a strategic backup plan.
Far from anticipating a shrinking appetite for Kazakhstan's exports, Zhang said that China wants to expand its investments there.
In February, Ning Jizhe, chairman of China's National Development and Reform Commission, said at a bilateral investment forum in Beijing that his government is looking in particular at sharing its experiences in high-tech and green technology in Kazakhstan. That would mark a shift away from concentration on the raw materials industry, which has traditionally constituted the main focus of Chinese investment.
Later that same month, Kazakhstan's Minister for Investment and Development, Zhenis Kasymbek, said that cooperation with China has generated 51 ongoing commercial projects worth a total of $27.7 billion. Another six projects were to be rolled out in 2018 at value of $363 million.
The bilateral trade figures are generally in Kazakhstan's favor. The figure for 2017 reached $10.5 billion, with around $5.8 billion of that total accounted for by exports to China. That export figure marked a 37 percent rise year-on-year.
Zhang, the ambassador, said, with perhaps a hint of mischievousness, that Beijing wants to continue developing projects in Kazakhstan with European help.
"This will be very good. If our cooperation is in everybody's interests, then why not? You Europeans can come with your ideas and technology. If you don't have money, then we will have it," he said.
Zhang said he has received specific expressions of interest from his German, United Kingdom and European Union counterparts.
The priority, he indicated, will be in consolidating the three-way axis with Russia and Kazakhstan, however.
"The Russian ambassador [in Kazakhstan], my old friend [Aleksei] Borodavkin is dropping by this Sunday and we will have talks. I think that we have very good conditions and basis for trilateral cooperation," Zhang said.
Chinese reaffirmation of its commitment to Kazakhstan comes a few weeks after President Nursultan Nazarbayev traveled to Washington to meet with President Donald Trump, where the pair spoke warmly of their intention to take their partnership to a "new strategic level."
In trademark fashion, however, Trump framed relations with Kazakhstan in resoundingly self-interested terms.
"A lot of goods are being purchased from our country, meaning jobs - General Electric, Boeing. Tremendous amounts of money," he said on January 16 before talks with Nazarbayev.
China is more careful to frame its narrative - if not its deeds necessarily - in ways that emphasize mutual interests and connectivity.
One such example was a cargo train that departed on the morning of March 28 from the eastern Chinese city of Xinxiang to embark on a maiden trip through all five Central Asian states. This train will operate once weekly and pull 50 carriages carrying cargo weighing between 150,000 tons and 200,000 tons. As a report by China's state-owned Xinhua news agency noted, the train is expected to operate on the principle of "leave full, return full."
"It will send mechanical equipment, rubber products, fire-resistant materials and other goods to the countries of Central Asia, and return a variety of raw materials," the agency reported.

Rothschild, which advises the Kazakh central bank, has recommended that the country's privatisation programme include pre-sales to strategic investors before shares are put on the market.
Oil-rich Kazakhstan, hard hit by the fall in global crude prices, has embarked on an ambitious privatisation drive to sharply cut the state's role in the economy by 2021…..
……..EXPANSION TO UZBEKISTAN
Rothschild advises the National Bank of Kazakhstan and has other advisory business in Kazakhstan that Salvetti said he could not disclose. He and Rothschild board chairman Eric de Rothschild held a meeting with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev in November, according to the presidential website.
Salvetti said Rothschild was considering expanding its activities to neighbouring Uzbekistan, following steps by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to open up the economy since he took power following the death of Islam Karimov in 2016.
"Uzbekistan is a country with huge potential and the new administration seems to be very committed to modernizing the country," said Salvetti who visited Uzbekistan earlier this year.
"Our working model in Kazakhstan is applicable to Uzbekistan as well - possibly advising the government on privatisations, helping with reforming the banking sector."

MEMERS discard, just for diggers
Part 2:
However the real key is that they own their own oil resources, it was not stolen from them. When Kazakhstan got independence from the USSR, they had essentially 100% control of their oil reserves, and were able to sell it to companies in a smart way where they retained most of the ownerships. This is unlike Chad, which was essentially conquered by foreigners, and then the government and people have had to fight to claw back ownership of their own country at every step of the way. In Kazakhstan they were lucky that the higher power that controlled them (Russia) simply collapsed, leaving them in control of themselves by default. Then, rather than be conquered by force, they rather intelligently wielded their power, resulting in these fancy cities (rather than it all being stored away in the Chevron and Exxon Mobil coffers).
Here's a breakdown of the ownership of the oil industry:
The leading oil industry is state-owned oil company KazMunayGas. The landmark foreign investment in Kazakh oil industry is the TengizChevroil joint venture, owned 50% by ChevronTexaco, 25% by ExxonMobil, 20% by the Government of Kazakhstan, and 5% by Lukarco of Russia. The Karachaganak natural gas and gas condensate field is being developed by BG, Agip, ChevronTexaco, and Lukoil. Also Chinese, Indian and Korean oil companies are involved in the Kazakhstan's oil industry.
https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_policy_of_Kazakhstan#Oil
When I originally came up with the idea for this article, I wanted to title it "Exxon owns Kazakhstan" because it seemed similar to the Chad situation at first blush. However after seeing the motorcycle video through Astana shows that the situation on the ground is quite a far cry from the situation in Chad. And seeing how the ownership numbers break down, with the government owning most of the oil and its income, rather than Chad who was just recently able to get control of just a mere 25% and is in debt to Glencore over a billion dollars for doing so.
One is a story of pillaging and being taken advantage of to the point of causing war, while the other is a story of a government inheriting vast riches that it sold and used in part to enrich the people of Kazakhstan. This is a story of Exxon having to cooperate with others in order to get access to what they want.
And an additional interesting note is that Kazakhstan has had the same president since 1990, Nursultan Nazarbayev. He remained in power despite Kazakhgate, bringing to question the legitimacy of democracy in Kazakhstan. However the people of Kazakhstan are likely so happy from the development over the last few decades that they have little reason to question the system.
Now the Russian containment strategy. After the USSR collapsed, the US wanted to gain control or make allies out of the countries that were formerly part of the USSR and are now independent. If they're all strong friends of the west, then they won't turn back to Russia 50 years down the line. They want to prevent the USSR from reforming because it is a serious challenge to US global hegemony.
This similar to the China containment strategy, which is a big reason why the US conquered and then developed Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines. This geographically boxes China in, like some world-sized game of Go, and keeps them from expanding their empire as easily.
This is why Japan got so rich after WW2 and made all our electronics in the 90s. Same with Taiwan now. We pumped money in to them, so they would get rich, while also making our stuff for cheap. When the people of the country become rich because of another country, they will ally with that country. By making these countries rich, in a way the everyday person can see and feel, we guarantee they will not turn back to China or Russia. This is the Russia containment strategy. This is why Kazakhstan is so nice. This is why Exxon gets all the subsidies it gets from the US government. Because it is a bulwark against Russian expansion. Not only geopolitical expansion, but the expansion of the Russian oil oligopoly as well. So these oil companies have skin in the game, in regards to boxing in Russia and China. So the oil companies will work together with the government in order to bring about the enrichment of defectors from the other major superpowers, while simultaneously gaining access to their resources and making a profit. Like Kazakhstan.

Hunter Biden is facing fresh questions over business dealing in yet another nation - Kazakhstan.

- Hunter Biden worked as a go-between to Kenes Rakishev,
a Kazakh oligarch with close ties to the country's longtime kleptocratic leader Nursultan Nazarbayev, The Daily Mail reported.
The British tabloid said they obtained emails from "anti-corruption campaigners" in Kazakhstan showing Hunter making contact
with Rakishev and attempting to facilitate investment for his cash in New York, Washington DC and a Nevada mining company.
Through his connections, emails show Hunter Biden successfully engineered a $1 million investment from Rakishev
to filmmaker Alexandra Forbes Kerry
- the __daughter of ex-Sen. and former Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry__, the report said.

Q Research General #9436 Eyes On TURKEY! 1.2 Edition
The explosive revelation led to dozens of high-profile figures calling on the controversial "think tank" to return the money. In a letter dated September 18, the coalition of 56 critics noted that Blavatnik "acquired his initial wealth by way of highly questionable transactions in tandem with the regimes of [ex-Kazakhstan president] Nursultan Nazarbayev and Vladimir Putin."
Then, he used shady tactics to keep and expand his fortune. "Blavatnik protected that wealth in part through strategic alliances with security personnel and practices that would surely be considered criminal in any democracy," the letter continued, calling on the CFR to return the money to avoid "reputational damage" from associating with somebody like Blavatnik with "close ties to the Kremlin and its kleptocratic network."
After citing some of the ultra-shady deals Blavatnik has been involved with, the coalition also highlighted his ties to Putin's circle of cronies. "Blavatnik's connections to corrupt Putin-supported oligarchs and officials are longstanding and well known," they wrote. "For example, Blavatnik's business partners include several individuals who are sanctioned by the United States government, such as Viktor Vekselberg, Oleg Deripaska, and Alexander Makhonov." Citing Spanish wiretaps, the critics also suggested he had ties to the mafia.
"It is our considered view that Blavatnik uses his 'philanthropy'- funds obtained by and with the consent of the Kremlin, at the expense of the state budget and the Russian people - at leading western academic and cultural institutions to advance his access to political circles," the letter blasting the CFR explained. "Such 'philanthropic' capital enables the infiltration of the US and UK political and economic establishments at the highest levels."
But CFR boss Richard Haass, a leading globalist architect, defended the donation and said the response from other CFR members to it had been overwhelmingly "positive." In fact, the CFR's website still has a glowing biography of Blavatnik, himself a CFR member, posted online, along with information touting the "Blavatnik internship program," his giant donation will fund.
The gift by Blavatnik "will further CFR's efforts to develop the next generation of leaders in government, academia and the private sector," continued Haass, an anti-Trump globalist who has worked for many years to undermine U.S. national sovereignty. "We are proud to find our selves in such distinguished company," he added.
On the CFR website, the deep state outfit touted the donation, too. "Blavatnik interns gain new insights into critical foreign policy issues and interact directly with leading experts and practitioners," it said. "They are offered professional development training to complement their substantive work with a series of skill-based workshops, trainings, and career advice sessions as a foundation for future work in the field of foreign policy and international affairs, and beyond."
Critics, though, were furious. A leading anti-corruption campaigner in the United States, Sarah Chayes, told the publication Bellingcat that the CFR's willingness to accept the donation from Blavatnik's foundation was a case study in the "soft enabling of kleptocracy." In particular, she said it fit with Blavatnik's history of working with "image launderers" to help him fix his reputation. Beyond that, "it broadcasts to the Kremlin that if you just disguise your money a little bit, the U.S. system is still fully penetrable."
