Ex Israeli official confirms 'majority' of captives in Gaza's Jabalia killed by friendly fire
Released captives have repeatedly testified that they lived in fear of Israeli bombs while they were being held by the resistance
Nitzan Alon, Israel's former coordinator for the affairs of captives, admitted on 9 December that most of the Israelis who were held by Hamas in Gaza's northern city of Jabalia were killed by the army's airstrikes.
"Israeli fire killed most of the hostages in Jabalia due to intelligence gaps," Alon, now retired, told Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.
Alon added that many of the captives who arrived in the strip alive died not long after due to Israeli airstrikes targeting the buildings where they were being held.
Among them were three Israeli captives who were killed by an Israeli attack in December 2023. This was the result of "incorrect assumptions on the ground."
"The fear caused by our airstrikes was repeatedly mentioned in the hostages' testimonies," Alon went on to say.
He also said internal pressure on the government and protests organized by the families of the captives had very little effect on the negotiations.
Alon also claimed Israel began the war with a "hostages first, Hamas later" approach, but ended up choosing a different path.
"If Hamas remains in power in Gaza, we achieved none of our goals. If it is dismantled, people will still debate the price - and many will argue a similar agreement could have been reached much earlier," he concluded.
Just five days earlier, Alon admitted to Yedioth Ahronoth that the Bibas family was not kidnapped by Hamas.
Four members of the family - a man, his wife, and their two children - were taken captive during Operation Al-Aqsa Flood by the Mujahideen Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Mujahideen Movement.
Their bodies were handed over in February 2025 by Hamas. Israel claims Hamas fighters killed the Bibas family with their "bare hands," but both Hamas and the Mujahideen Brigades affirm that they were killed by an Israeli strike.
"Take the Bibas family, for example. We knew who abducted them. We informed Hamas who the kidnappers were so they could locate the bodies and return them," Alon told the Israeli newspaper last week.
Significant amounts of evidence have emerged since the war started regarding Israel's implementation of the Hannibal Directive on 7 October - a measure taken to prevent the capture of Israelis even if it risks their lives.
Israeli helicopters and tanks indiscriminately opened fire at the settlements that were stormed by Hamas fighters that Saturday, causing mass destruction and many Israeli casualties, testimonies have confirmed.
Released captives have also confirmed to Israeli media that they were more afraid of being killed by Israeli airstrikes than by Hamas.

Gaza ceasefire talks will last 'several days, if not more,' says senior official

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas on a potential ceasefire and hostage deal began Monday in Sharm el-Sheikh, with a senior official predicting that the first round will last several days as both sides work to finalize a comprehensive agreement.
The talks come one week after U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled his plan to end the war in Gaza.
Under the proposal, Hamas terrorists would release all 48 hostages they are holding in exchange for 250 Palestinian security prisoners and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.
"The negotiations will last at least several days, if not longer," said a senior official familiar with the discussions, speaking with Reuters. The official said the objective is to reach a full and detailed accord before implementing a ceasefire, not a temporary or partial truce.
The Israeli delegation includes Deputy Shin Bet chief "M," the government's coordinator for hostages and missing persons Gal Hirsch, retired Maj. Gen. Nitzan Alon, the prime minister's political adviser Ophir Falk, and representatives from the Mossad and the Israel Defense Forces.
The team is scheduled to arrive in Sharm el-Sheikh later Monday, with formal talks expected to begin at 4 p.m.
Later this week, Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff are expected to join the discussions.
Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, who leads Israel's negotiating team, is set to join the talks around the same time, depending on developments. Egypt and Qatar are serving as mediators.
The Hamas delegation, led by senior terrorist and chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, arrived in Egypt on Sunday night. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed cautious optimism before the negotiations, saying, "I hope we can finish this the simple way."
A senior Israeli official said a quick agreement is unlikely because both sides are seeking to finalize every element of the deal before implementation begins.
"Hamas and Israel have agreed on the basic framework of Trump's 20-point plan," the official said. "The next stages of the talks are meant to address the specific details, which in the past required a long process."
In earlier attempts to reach an agreement, mediators tried to establish an initial phase and postpone later stages, which led to the collapse of past talks.
This time, according to officials, mediators will attempt to close gaps between Israel and Hamas across a range of disputed issues, including the pace of the IDF withdrawal from Gaza and the transition of governance from Hamas to an international force.
A senior Palestinian official told the Saudi-based Al-Hadath network that Hamas is insisting on the release of six prominent prisoners, including Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine Secretary-General Ahmad Sa'adat.
Hamas is also demanding the return of displaced residents to the Gaza Strip and plans to coordinate the transfer of hostages with other factions.

Report: IDF Negotiator Says There Will Be No Hostage Deal Under Netanyahu Govt
Indirect negotiations are expected to resume soon
An Israeli military officer involved in the indirect hostage deal negotiations with Hamas has expressed frustration with the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a report from Israel's Channel 12.
The report said that Maj. Gen. Nitzan Alon told Israeli military officials that Israel wouldn't reach a deal with Hamas under the current government. "We are desperate. With this government formation, there will be no deal," he said.
Alon also explained that it would be possible to restart military operations in Gaza even if Israel agreed to a deal that would include a commitment to a permanent ceasefire, which has been Hamas's main demand. Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected the idea and continues to vow he will "eradicate" Hamas, a goal the US believes is unrealistic.
"The deal I'm pushing for would provide for the return of all the hostages, while Hamas insists that it must provide for an end to the war," Alson said. "I told the prime minister that it will be possible to return to fighting at any given moment."
In response to the report, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) insisted Alon was taken out of context. "Gen. Alon was asked a question by the public about the effect the political leadership has on the talks, and he answered that as one in uniform, he cannot answer such questions," said IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari.
Netanyahu's office released a statement criticizing Alon's comments. "The clashes from within the negotiating team only strengthen Hamas's position, harm the families, and distance the release of our hostages," the office said.
Hostage deal negotiations have been suspended since around the time Israel launched its invasion of the southern Gaza City of Rafah, which it began by capturing the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian border. Reports say negotiations are expected to continue this week after CIA Director William Burns met with Mossad Chief David Barnea and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani.

According to President Biden, the deal that's on the table involves a six-week truce, but it's unclear if Hamas is receptive to the idea. A Hamas official speaking to AFP signaled the Palestinian group was still looking for a permanent ceasefire, saying Hamas was awaiting the outcome of the Cairo talks and was "open to discussing any initiative that achieves an end to aggression and war."

A group of former top officials from the Israel's Atomic Energy Commission, the IDF and the Mossad sent a letter on Monday to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressing support for a US return to the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.
Led by former deputy IDF chief of staff Matan Vilnai, Commanders for Israel's Security said in the letter that it "welcomes the American initiative to get Iran to again transparently follow the guidelines in the JCPOA as long as it includes an Iranian commitment to abide by the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (regarding development of ballistic missiles."
In addition to Vilnai, the letter was signed by former Mossad director Tamir Pardo, former head of the IDF Operations Directorate Maj.-Gen. (res.) Nitzan Alon, former head of the National Security Council Uzi Arad and former principal deputy director general for policy at the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission Eli Levite.
The former senior defense officials expressed support for President Joe Biden's current position not to lift sanctions on Iran unless it returns to abide by the 2015 deal. It said that first the goal needs to be to get Iran back into compliance and then to work on a follow-up deal that would fill the holes in the JCPOA.
"This will take into account new information that has been accumulated since the JCPOA as well as additional problems that Iran presents," the letter said.
It was not the first time that the group has come out against Netanyahu's efforts to stop the JCPOA. Ahead of the signing of the 2015 deal, the group called on Netanyahu to cancel his speech to the US Congress.
Former deputy head of the Mossad Amiram Levin said then that while it was difficult for him to speak out against Netanyahu, who served under him in the IDF, the prime minister's navigation was off.
"Leaders speak privately, not out in the open," he said. "The visit and the speech are exactly the opposite of that. Rather than working hand in hand with the US president we are going there and sticking our thumb in his eye. That hurts not only the president, but, above all, it hurts the citizens of the US that are fans of Israel, but first and foremost are Americans."
