In the unforgiving world of woke, there's no room for personal development. One misstep decades ago and you're tarred for life
Boeing's communications chief is the latest to lose his job after historical shaming over an article he wrote 33 years ago. Why can't the woke brigade accept that people can evolve and change their views over time?
Despite the urgent need to attend to the catastrophic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic pinballing around the aviation industry, it's a sad sign of the times to see Boeing's communications chief leave his job over a magazine article he wrote more than 30 years ago.
In the piece he penned for the magazine of the US Naval Institute, Niel Golightly wasn't flying the flag for neo-Nazis, nor was he extolling the virtues of pedophilia.
It was a clumsy article about women in the armed forces that has done it for Golightly, making him the latest victim of the self-righteous narcissists who patrol the world of gender politics with a take-no-prisoners attitude.
They don't care that it was more than three decades ago. They don't take into account that Golightly was then a 29-year-old serviceman in the world of macho military pilots during the Cold War, and that his article simply reflected a then widely-held belief.

Boeing's top communications exec resigns over article about women in combat he wrote 33 years ago
The article was written in 1987 for a naval magazine when he was a US Navy lieutenant.
Boeing's senior vice president of communications resigned this week following a complaint about an article that was written 33 years ago. Niel Golightly resigned from the aerospace giant on Thursday after a co-worker resurfaced an article regarding women in combat roles that he wrote in 1987. Golightly has since called the decades-old article "embarrassingly wrong and offensive."
Golightly stepped down because he wrote an article arguing that women shouldn't serve in the military. Golightly served in the U.S. Navy for 14 years, including as a fighter pilot and as a speechwriter to the secretary of the Navy and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was a U.S. Navy lieutenant when he wrote the article titled "No Right to Fight" in the December 1987 issue of Proceedings, a monthly magazine published by the United States Naval Institute that was founded in 1873.
"At issue is not whether women can fire M-60s, dogfight MiGs, or drive tanks," Golightly wrote in the naval magazine. "Introducing women into combat would destroy the exclusively male intangibles of war fighting and the feminine images of what men fight for - peace, home, family."
Before leaving Boeing, Golightly released a statement on the situation.
"My article was a 29-year-old Cold War navy pilot's misguided contribution to a debate that was live at the time," Golightly said in his apology. "My argument was embarrassingly wrong and offensive."
"The dialogue that followed its publication 33 years ago quickly opened my eyes, indelibly changed my mind, and shaped the principles of fairness, inclusion, respect, and diversity that have guided my professional life since," Golightly added. "The article is not a reflection of who I am, but nonetheless, I have decided that in the interest of the company I will step down."
Golightly stepped down as communications chief for the commercial jetliners manufacturer after talking with top executives, including Boeing President and CEO David Calhoun.
"I greatly respect Niel for stepping down in the interest of the company," Calhoun said in a statement. Calhoun added that Boeing has an "unrelenting commitment to diversity and inclusion in all its dimensions."
Golightly was only with the company six months after he was named to the position of senior vice president of communications in January of this year.

Boeing Executive Resigns Over 1987 Op-Ed Opposing Women in Combat
The head of communications at Boeing has resigned his post after an employee complained about a 33-year-old article he wrote arguing against putting women in combat roles in the military.
Niel Golightly penned the op-ed when he was a 29-year-old lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. It appeared in a magazine published by the U.S. Naval Institute, an outfit which describes itself as "an independent forum for those who dare to read, think, speak, and write to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to global security.
"At issue is not whether women can fire M-60s, dogfight MiGs, or drive tanks. Introducing women into combat would destroy the exclusively male intangibles of war fighting and the feminine images of what men fight for-peace, home, family," Golightly wrote, according to an excerpt published on the U.S. Naval Institute's website.
Women were barred from combat roles throughout American history, including the first term of Barack Obama's presidency, until the policy was changed in 2013. In 2015, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that all combat jobs would open to women and the following year a handful of women passed combat training courses.
Yet Golightly has resigned over advocating the long-running policy back in 1987 and has now apologized.
"My article was a 29-year-old Cold War navy pilot's misguided contribution to a debate that was live at the time," Golightly said in a statement included in Boeing's announcement. "My argument was embarrassingly wrong and offensive. The article is not a reflection of who I am; but nonetheless I have decided that in the interest of the company I will step down."
"Boeing does not agree with the views expressed in the article, and it does not reflect Niel's views today," the company said.
"Niel and I discussed at length the article and its implications for his role as the Company's lead spokesman," said David Calhoun, President and CEO. "I want to emphasize our Company's unrelenting commitment to diversity and inclusion in all its dimensions, and to ensuring that all of our employees have an equal opportunity to contribute and excel."
What was policy five years ago is now ground for purging.
