South Africa's finance minister Nhlanhla Nene has quit after admitting meeting members of the Gupta family, who have been accused of corruption.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said he accepted the resignation "in the interests of good governance".
The Guptas have been accused of working with former President Jacob Zuma to secure government contracts and determine cabinet appointments.
Both the Guptas and Mr Zuma deny the allegations.
Mr Nene has been replaced by former central bank chief Tito Mboweni. This is the fifth change of finance minister since 2014.
Last week, Mr Nene told a judge-led inquiry into the alleged influence of the Guptas, known as the Zondo commission, about meetings that he had previously denied.
There is no suggestion that he had done anything illegal in meeting the businessmen during his stint as deputy finance minister and finance minister in Mr Zuma's government, but he has been under intense political pressure to step down since making the admission.
Mr Zuma sacked him as finance minister in 2015, but he was reappointed by the current president in February.

"Political leaders question timing by FNB to close Zuma's accounts"
https://www.iol.co.za/news/politics/political-leaders-question-timing-by-fnb-to-close-zumas-accounts-84e51528-7e87-4b54-9604-7942bd6497df
Published Mar 17, 2024
Some political leaders have questioned the timing by FNB to close the bank account of former president Jacob Zuma's with elections a few months away.
Zuma has been leading the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party for the last four months after he announced his support for the new party and is number one of the list of candidates for the party.
It was reported on Sunday that the bank was closing his account. This is the same account where the now defunct VBS Mutual Bank deposited a loan of R7.8 million to Zuma.
FNB said it was complying with an order of the High Court in KwaZulu-Natal.
"FNB is complying with a specific order by the High Court (KZN division). However, given client confidentiality, FNB cannot comment further on any client's specific bank accounts and treats all customers objectively and consistently," said FNB.
African People's Convention (APC) leader and former chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) Themba Godi said it appeared that the banks have enormous power and this could render the democratic project meaningless.
He said there needs to be changes in how banks were regulated.
Godi said it was also unclear if this was an administrative decision or a political decision.
The APC leader said the timing was suspicious given the fact that the country was a few months away from the elections.
"The starting point is the suspicion around the timing. The bank exposes itself to be playing a political game. The powers that the banks have in our country is enormous and it renders our democratic practice meaningless. If they can do this to a former president who else is at their mercy.
"With Markus Jooste we haven't heard his accounts being touched, but he has brought this country into disrepute," said Godi.
There needs to be a regulatory framework where banks will not be able to do these things.
Former Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) leader Letlapa Mphahlele said this raises eyebrows.
"FNB has reportedly issued a notice to terminate former president Jacob Zuma's bank accounts in which his R7.8m VBS loan was deposited. The timing raises eyebrows. Only the most gullible among us think that the banks are impartial referees in the game of politics," said Mphahlele.
The Sunday World reported that the bank said it was closing the account because Zuma is a politically exposed person.

"Van Rooyen takes on Gordhan"
https://youtu.be/4NDmzkqyjnI
Aug 30, 2016
Johannesburg, 29 August 2016 - Des Van Rooyen says Pravin Gordhan should subject himself to the Hawks' probe as he's not above the law. He said this earlier today - speaking in his capacity as a top member of the Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association.
2:23 - "The vets say they're aware of a movement to occupy Luthuli House over the Gordhan issue and they're warning they'll be on guard to defend the ANC's headquarters."
"Zuma right about van Rooyen's academic qualifications: report": Master's Degree in Finance - Pravin Gordhan qualification: Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy
https://businesstech.co.za/news/government/115560/zuma-right-about-van-rooyens-academic-qualifications-report/
4 Mar 2016
David (Des) van Rooyen has the highest academic qualification of all the finance ministers President Jacob Zuma has appointed during his term, Africa Check reported on Friday.
In December last year, President Jacob Zuma unexpectedly replaced then finance minister Nhlanhla Nene with Van Rooyen, only to replace him four days later with former finance minister Pravin Gordhan, following aggressive reaction by the markets.
Van Rooyen took over as minister of co-operative governance from Gordhan.
Zuma has reportedly recently defended his choice of Van Rooyen, pointing out that Van Rooyen is a trained "finance and economic comrade" and more qualified than any minister he has ever appointed in the finance sphere.
According to Africa Check, which cited the government's website, Van Rooyen has several certificates in governance and finance. He obtained a master's degree in management from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2010. He also has another master's degree in finance - specialising in economic policy - from the University of London. This was obtained in 2013 through distance learning.
According to his government profile, the highest academic qualification Gordhan holds is a bachelor of science in pharmacy from the University of Durban in 1973. Africa Check said it was unable to confirm this with the university, but would keep on trying.
Gordhan was also awarded two honorary doctorates: in commerce, by the University of South Africa and in law, by the University of Cape Town, both in 2007.
Nene has a bachelor of commerce honours in economics obtained at the University of the Western Cape in 2009. Nene also holds several certificates and diplomas in economics, according to his government profile.
The question could therefore be asked, according to Africa Check, whether Zuma's qualification statement should not have been taken literally, but looked at from an academic angle.

"Icarus has fallen - politics and the tragedy of Brian Molefe" - State Capture, Eskom, Optimum Coal Mine, Glencore, KPMG, Guptas, murder of Dulcie September, Marc Rich, Ivan Glasenberg, Mick Davis, Xstrata, Vitol, etc. - (3 of 8)
https://what-is-a-blogg.blogspot.com/2016/11/icarus-has-fallen-politics-and-tragedy_4.html
4 November 2016
What was curious about the Tegeta/Oakbay conversation is that Eskom suddenly changed 2 things. Firstly, Eskom was no longer insisting on charging the R2,15 billion penalty to the new owner - this is different to what Pembani had been told. Secondly Eskom was now happy to approve the sale of all 3 entities - this is not what Pembani had been told. In other words, once Tegeta joined the conversation, Eskom deleted the 2 clauses that had made the deal impossible for Pembani. This was curious.
The banks also got involved in the conversation. By the time Nhlanhla Nene was fired on 9 December, the banks were owed R2,95 billion. In reality, the company now belonged to the banks and Eskom which was owed R2,15 billion. You would therefore need over R5 billion to buy the company - unless Eskom wrote off its R2,15 billion claim - which it surprisingly did by deferring it. Once Eskom had indicated that the R2,15 billion could be deferred it meant that all one needed to do was to pay off the banks and Optimum could be transferred. For all practical purposes, this deal made economic sense. Only 1 leg of it was odd - the Optimum Coal Terminal (OCT) leg. As part of its drive to reduce costs, Optimum had stopped supplying coal to the export market. This is odd because the coal is sold on the export market for $65 (R875) per tonne - which is much higher than the R150 Eskom was paying and still higher than the R530 Optimum wanted Eskom to pay under a revised contract. Once all these issues had been sorted and Eskom was willing to ignore the R2,15 billion penalty, Tegeta made an offer that was acceptable to all parties (the banks and Glencore). The final purchase price was R2,55 billion. Glencore would pay R400 million and Tegeta - don't laugh - would pay R2,15 billion. But there's more...
In any mining operation, there is a legal requirement to set up an 'environmental/rehabilitation fund' which will deal with fixing the environment once the minerals have been successfully stolen by capitalists. Such funds are supposed to benefit the communities in the affected area and established in terms of the National Environmental Management Act. Naturally, Optimum Coal and Koornfontein had created such funds. The Optimum Fund had R1,47 billion and the Koornfontein Fund had R280 million. The funds are ring-fenced for community activities only and cannot be used for any other purpose. If an entity uses the funds for any other purpose then the owners of the fund are guilty in terms of the Income Tax Act (section 37) and need to pay taxes up to 2 times the value of the Fund.
The Guptas got clever here. As part of the purchase agreement, the control of the rehabilitation funds would pass on to the new owner. Tegeta then classified this as 'cash available to them' which would be transferable once the sale had been finalised. (Just like your fixed deposit which you plan on withdrawing after a specific date). The Bank of Baroda then treated the cash in the funds as money available to Tegeta and counted it as Tegeta's asset. After April, South Africa's 'ethical' banks - Standard Bank and Nedbank, transferred the funds to the Bank of Baroda branch in Durban. Apparently at that stage the 2 banks had not located their conscience and didn't question why the money was being moved.
So you'd think these illegal transfers would have set alarm bells everywhere. But the Guptas are much smarter than we think. The Guptas have a friend called Mosebenzi Zwane - who sounds like a hard worker. He is the rather energetic Minister of Mineral Resources. The official custodian of the mining rehabilitation funds is the Department of Mineral Resources. Such funds that are created for community benefit purposes are only allowed to make transfers after obtaining approval from the Minister of Mineral Resources - and that would be Mosebenzi Zwane. Once such a transfer happens; SARS is responsible for charging taxes on this fund - unless the Commissioner decides not to charge the tax. That would be Mr Tom Moyane.
In order to facilitate this hoax, the Bank of Baroda prepared a letter to indicate that Tegeta had money. That made it easier for the South African banks to believe they would get their money. But this was not enough to cover the purchase price.
