Unilever cuts off funding for Ben & Jerry's foundation amid tensions over Gaza, audit

Unilever is cutting off millions in funding for Ben & Jerry's charitable foundation after it refused to provide audit documents, escalating what has become a microcosm for corporate "woke" wars.

Peter ter Kulve, who runs Unilever's ice cream business, told Ben & Jerry's executives in an email that the foundation's trustees "have continued to resist basic oversight" and are not cooperating with requests from corporate auditors ahead of the ice cream business' spinoff from Unilever. The probe into the foundation began in part because of its giving to pro-Palestinian organizations, Semafor reported earlier this year.

"It represents a marked departure from the norms of charitable organizations, for whom transparency is typically a bedrock operating principle," ter Kulve wrote in the email, which was seen by Semafor.

The Ben & Jerry's foundation distributed more than $5 million of Unilever's money in 2022, to mostly progressive organizations, and has done so ever since the quirky, left-leaning Vermont creamery was acquired by the corporate giant in 2000. Since then, Ben & Jerry's politics have been a headache for its parent, and the tensions between the two have grown more acute as the business community got swept into the culture wars - first pulled to the left in the mid-2010s, then retreating rightward under the second Trump administration.

Ter Kulve wrote that management of the soon-to-be standalone ice cream company had met with foundation trustees and "consistently sought to accommodate concerns" they raised, including switching audit firms and promising to keep certain information about grantees private.

"The Foundation is a powerful force for good and has played a meaningful role in advancing the Ben & Jerry's social mission," ter Kulve told executives. "We remain committed to that mission."

Representatives for Unilever and Ben & Jerry's did not respond to a request for comment. A lawyer for the foundation's trustees didn't immediately comment.

Unilever decided to spin off its ice cream business last year. The audit of Ben and Jerry's foundation was part of that process. But it has devolved into a turf war between Unilever and the foundation, whose trustees claim their parent company is using the transaction as a pretense to attack its charitable giving.

The troubles date back to at least 2021, when Ben & Jerry's said it would stop selling its products in Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. Unilever sold the regional Ben & Jerry's license in response.

Ben & Jerry's independent directors sued Unilever in November, accusing their parent company of silencing the ice cream maker's statements in support of Palestinian refugees. Other court documents allege that Unilever muzzled Ben & Jerry's social media posts that mentioned President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Nelson Peltz, the billionaire investor and Unilever director who introduced the president to Musk.

Unilever ousts CEO Hein Schumacher to speed turnaround
Marmite, Dove and Ben & Jerry's maker announces finance chief Fernando Fernandez will take over in surprise move
Unilever has ousted its chief executive, Hein Schumacher, who has been little more than a year and a half at the helm, replacing him with its finance chief, Fernando Fernandez, to speed up the company's turnaround plans.
In a surprise announcement, the maker of Knorr, Marmite, Dove and Ben & Jerry's said Schumacher would step down on 1 March and leave the company on 31 May.
Fernandez, the company's chief financial officer and a Unilever veteran, will take over as chief executive when Schumacher leaves. Before he became finance chief in January last year, he ran beauty and wellbeing, one of Unilever's fastest-growing businesses.
He previously headed the Latin America, Brazil and Philippines divisions. An economist who studied at the University of Buenos Aires, he joined Unilever in 1988.
It is understood that the decision was made at a board meeting on Monday, with the board preferring Fernandez's appetite to rapidly execute the next phase of the turnaround.
Unilever's shareholders include the activist investor Nelson Peltz, who has a seat on the board. Investors have been becoming impatient with the pace of the recovery, as recent results showed a 5% drop in 2024 pre-tax profits and the company said it had made a slow start to 2025.
The Unilever chair, Ian Meakins, thanked Schumacher for "resetting Unilever's strategy, for the focus and discipline he has brought to the company and for the solid financial progress delivered during 2024". He pointed out that Schumacher pushed through a productivity programme and began the spin-off of the ice-cream business, both of which are fully on track.
But he said: "The growth action plan has put Unilever on a path to higher performance and the board is committed to accelerating its execution."
He added: "The board has been impressed with Fernando's decisive and results-oriented approach and his ability to drive change at speed ... He has a strong track record of performance and portfolio management, a love of brands and a profound knowledge of Unilever's operations."
Schumacher said in an email after the news of his departure that the board had been "eager to step up the pace of our strategy execution and realise swift value creation underscored by a change in leadership".
Unilever has chosen Amsterdam for the primary listing of the division, in the latest blow to the London stock market. It makes some of the world's top-selling ice-cream brands, including Wall's, Magnum and Ben & Jerry's, as well as Cornetto, Viennetta, Carte d'Or and Breyers.
Chris Beckett, head of equity research at Quilter Cheviot, said: "Losing a chief executive after 18 months is never a good thing. For Unilever, especially during a strategy turnaround, it does not suggest things were going well behind the scenes or the business was firing on all cylinders.

The ex-president and Tesla CEO are exploring ways of giving the billionaire "formal input and influence" on government policies

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump could make Tesla CEO Elon Musk a White House adviser if he wins the election in November, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with discussions between the pair.

According to the paper's sources, Musk's possible appointment is by no means set in stone, and specifics of any possible role are still unclear. However, the tycoon and the former US president are said to have forged close ties in recent months, discussing "ways to give Musk formal input and influence" over government policy.

The WSJ's sources claimed that some of the conversations between Musk and Trump revolved around immigration, technology and science, with their views becoming increasingly aligned. During the conversations,Musk also reportedly asked Trump to write more posts on X(formerly known as Twitter), the social network he owns. The former president posted prolifically on the platform before he was temporarily banned in 2021.

The Tesla CEO, along with prominentAmerican billionaire Nelson Peltz, also reportedly set out a "data-driven" investment project to prevent voter fraud in US elections. He and Peltz also told Trump about an ongoing influence campaign in which they are lobbying those in elite US circles not to support President Joe Biden's bid for reelection, the paper said.

Musk briefly served on the White House advisory council under the Trump administration but left the panel after the former president pulled the US out of the Paris Climate Accord.

The US billionaire has yet to comment on the report. While the tycoon has stopped short of endorsing the 45th president, he made his pro-GOP sympathies known in May 2022, writing on X that the Democrats "have become the party of division and hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican."

Later that year, he expressed support for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a former GOP presidential candidate who dropped out of the race in January 2024 and supported Trump's reelection bid.

How Trump brought Barron, 18, to meeting with Elon Musk and his son X at Nelson Peltz's sprawling estate to 'offer him White House advisory role'

Donald Trump brought along his 18-year old son Barron to a high impact meeting that included Elon Musk and billionaire Nelson Peltz, exposing his son to some of the backroom dealings that could shape the 2024 campaign or a second Trump term.

The get-together came at Peltz's Palm Beach estate, and also included X, Musk's now 4-year-old son with actress Grimes.

It came at a March meeting where Musk, one of the world's richest men and the Tesla and Space X founder, spoke about a potential 'advisory role' for himself that would involve counseling Trump, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The two men have clashed in the past, but have been brought together by Musk's fears about a rise in 'woke' culture, and Trump's own search for funds to power his reelection campaign.

The meeting came a month before Trump beat President Joe Biden in April campaign fundraising, in a contest that is shaping up to be a vicious and costly online and TV ad battle.

They joined at the mansion of billionaire Peltz, who raised money for Trump's 2020 campaign, then broke with him after January 6th and got behind Ron DeSantis in the primaries, only to get behind Trump after he turned back Republican challengers in the presidential primary. Trump and Musk now speak regularly about such topics as immigration - where Trump has vowed to deport millions of people who came here illegally - as well as high tech issues, science and Space Force, the newest military branch created under Trump.

Musk's slew of government contracts include private space launches and deals for his Starlink aerospace company.

Trump and former first lady Melania Trump took steps to keep Barron out of the limelight during their time in the White House.

They attended his high school graduation from Florida's private Oxbridge Academy this month. He had been announced as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, only to have Melania's office announce that while he was 'honored to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party, he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments.'

Blackstone Group CEO Steve Schwarzman announced on Friday that he will back Donald Trump in the 2024 election, giving the former president the support of one of the biggest names on Wall Street.
Schwarzman, the billionaire co-founder and chair of the world's largest private equity firm and a GOP megadonor, said in a statement that the "dramatic rise of antisemitism has led me to focus on the consequences of upcoming elections with greater urgency."

Like many top Wall Street donors to Trump, Schwarzman distanced himself from the former president shortly after the 2020 election and subsequent attempts to overturn its results.

But Schwarzman says he now shares "the concern of most Americans that our economic, immigration and foreign policies are taking the country in the wrong direction."

His decision to endorse Trump comes amid signs that some major donors to the former president are returning to the fold. Trump is also finding fresh support from leaders in the technology and financial industries.

Other billionaires, including oil and natural gas executiveHarold Hamm, Wall Street investor Nelson Peltz and hotel tycoon Robert Bigelow are also backing the former presidentafter previously issuing statements condemning his actions in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.

Trump's momentum with megadonors comes as President Joe Biden's fundraising efforts have showed signs of sagging. Earlier this week, the Biden team reported that it brought in less money in April than Trump's campaign says it raised alongside the Republican National Committee.

Biden still has support among members of the investor class that backed him in 2020, however. Even within Blackstone, the firm's President and Chief Operating OfficerJon Grayis among the president's top donors. The administration's former ambassador to Israel,Tom Nides,is now the firm's vice chair.

Meanwhile, Trump's courting of high-dollar donors has sparked an investigation by Senate Democrats, who are seeking information on any promises that may have been extracted at a dinner where the former president sought $1 billion in campaign donations from oil industry executives.

Good morning. Markets wait for Powell comments, jobs data gives a payrolls preview and Citigroup strategists say US stocks have room to resume their gains. Here's what traders are talking about. - David Goodman

Waiting for Powell
US stock futures are falling this morning and Treasuries are resuming a decline as traders wait for remarks by Fed Chair Jerome Powell. While it's only been a few days since Powell last spoke, the stakes are high - the comments are his first since a suite of stronger data this week prompted traders to trim bets on the number of rate cuts this year and sparked a rout in global bonds. Some may be hoping for some dovish balm from Powell, but Pimco has seen enough already, and is positioning for the Fed to deliver fewer cuts than other major central banks this year. That case may have been strengthened by data Wednesday showing euro-area inflation slowed more than expected last month, cementing prospects for an interest-rate cut by the European Central Bank in June.

Payrolls preview
Powell is talking amid a rush of Fed speeches. Five other officials are talking today, while two others said yesterday they still expect the US central bank to cut rates three times in 2024. The other big event today is the ADP's employment report, which may give traders a preview of Friday's ever-crucial payrolls data. Economists predict the figures will show employers added 150,000 workers last month, the highest this year, amid a pattern of labor markets in developed countries consistently beating expectations.

Further to go?
Stronger data so far this week has taken some of the steam about the rally in US stocks, with the S&P 500 stumbling after its biggest first-quarter gain in five years. But Citigroup strategists suggest there's scope for gains to resume as investors appear to be showing "persistent" demand for US stocks. Overall positioning isn't stretched compared to history, strategists led by Chris Montagu wrote in a note, saying this leaves room for further gains.

Musk on Disney
Tesla shares had a bruising day yesterday, falling almost 5% after the carmaker delivered just 386,810 vehicles in the first three months of the year, missing Bloomberg's average estimate by the biggest margin ever. However, founder Elon Musk also has other firms on his mind. In a post on his X platform today, Musk said that while he doesn't own any Disney shares right now, he would "definitely" buy them if Nelson Peltz was elected to the company's board.

Taiwan quake
Taiwan's strongest earthquake in a quarter century leveled dozens of buildings on the eastern side of the island, killing at least seven people. A crunch vote, that will decide the future of the company, is taking place at a shareholder meeting on Wednesday.

Investors will decide whether to snatch the keys to the Magic Kingdom from Iger and hand them to Nelson Peltz, one of America's most aggressive investors. Professor Von Drake appears in a video advising investors to reject Peltz, an octogenarian tycoon and father-in-law to David and Victoria Beckham's son Brooklyn, who is trying to muscle his way onto the board.

Iger, who was summoned from retirement in 2022 to save Disney, also has some human supporters including film-maker George Lucas and the family of Walt Disney. The parade of Peltz backers is led by Elon Musk, the Tesla and Twitter/X billionaire, who recently accused Disney of having a corporate 'Gestapo' that enforces woke rules on diversity, equality and inclusion.

The titanic clash amounts to a struggle for the very soul of Disney. For generations its characters have epitomised wholesome family values. Films such as Bambi and Mary Poppins, along with animated characters like Mickey Mouse, have been enjoyed by millions of children and parents around the world.

But disillusion has set in. Central to the disaffection, critics claim, is that Disney is losing its way by going 'woke'. Bob Iger and the board naturally disagree. But even the company's most ardent fans on Wall Street would concede that the House of Mouse has seen better days.

Billionaire activist investor Nelson Peltz plans to vote for former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race, citing President Joe Biden's mental condition and immigration policies.

"It will probably be Trump and I'm not happy about that," he told the Financial Times in an interview, adding that Biden's "mental condition is really scary." Furthermore, Mr. Peltz expressed his concern regarding the porous U.S. southern border, which has turned into a hot-button issue for both Republicans and Democrats in the election season.
"We can't go on letting everyone into this country?.?.?.?We have an immigration problem-it's not a Republican or Democrat problem," said Mr. Peltz. He expressed opposition to stopping immigration altogether but "I want some boundaries put on it so we know at least who we're bringing in," he said, according to the outlet.

Illegal immigration has been a thorn in the side of Democrats, with the Biden administration's policies being criticized for the massive amounts of inflows across the southern border. Former President Donald Trump said at a recent rally that one of the first things he would do once elected would be to end every single "open border policy of the Biden administration."
"That border was a tiny fraction of what this border is," President Trump said. "This is the worst border in the history of the world." Since President Joe Biden took office, there have been an estimated 10 million illegal immigrants who have crossed the border.

Mr. Peltz is the founder of Trian Fund Management, an investment management firm with offices in New York and Florida. According to Forbes, the firm has $8.5 billion in assets under management, with Mr. Peltz currently worth around $1.7 billion.

Disney is terrible. That's hardly beyond debate at this point. There's a reason Disney+'s subscriber base is falling dramatically and its movies are being shrugged off. In fact, Disney is in such dire straits that a struggle for control of the company is currently underway between Disney CEO Bob Iger and Trian Partners' Nelson Peltz. It's not going well for Iger, but that's a theme for Disney nowadays. Despite this, there's a group of people out there who still get enthusiastic about Disney releases, and whenever something is announced they gather together to celebrate and promote it. Weirdly, when they do, it all seems very corporate and sanitized

Disney CEO Bob Iger's second stint as boss of the House of Mouse will last just two years, the media titan said Thursday.
Iger, who shocked the business world when he returned to lead the entertainment and media empire last November, said the two-year window was stipulated in his contract.
"Well, my plan is to stay here for two years, that's what my contract says, that was my agreement with the board, and that is my preference," Iger told CNBC on Thursday.
Iger, 71, said one of his main tasks in his return to Disney will be to help the board "succeed at succession" - something that didn't go well the last time he handed over the reins.
Iger handpicked Chapek as his successor before riding off into the sunset after 15 years of running the company in 2020. But the board removed Chapek, 62, after a tumultuous two-and-a-half-year reign, which included political fights with Florida's Republican governor and state legislature over the "Don't Say Gay" law.
Iger's first few months have been challenging.He had to fend off a proxy fight from activist investor Nelson Peltzover the company's $71 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox as well as the Mouse House's failed succession plan.
But Iger's plan to slash 7,000 jobs as part of an effort to achieve $5.5 billion in cost savings has placated Peltz. The boss of Trian Fund Management, which owns around 9.4 million Disney shares worth some $900 million, said he was ending the proxy battle.
"Now Disney plans to do everything we wanted them to do," Peltz told CNBC on Thursday.

Nelson Peltz's Trian Fund Management is ending its proxy war with Disney after the company confirmed plans for a major internal restructuring, the famed activist investor revealed on Thursday.
Peltz confirmed an end to his clash with the Mouse House's board of directors after CEO Bob Iger announced a sweeping initiative to shave $5.5 billion in costs and slash 7,000 jobs on Wednesday.
"This was a great win for all the shareholders," Peltz said on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street."
"Management at Disney now plans to do everything that we wanted them to do. We wish the very best to Bob [Iger], this management team and the board. We will be watching. We will be rooting and the proxy fight is over," Peltz added.
Disney cheered Peltz's change of heart.

Trian has increased its total holdings in Comcast to about 20 million shares.

Trian Fund Management LP, led by billionaire activist investor Nelson Peltz, has acquired a stake in cable giant Comcast Corp. (CMCSA).

Trian said on Monday that it had purchased 7.2 million Comcast shares through June 30, The Wall Street Journal reported. Since then, Trian has increased its total holdings in Comcast to about 20 million shares.

Trian's holding amounts to a 0.4% stake valued at about $870 million.

"Trian believes Comcast's stock is undervalued," Trian said in a statement. "We have recently begun what we believe are constructive discussions with Comcast's management team and look forward to continuing those discussions."

Year-to-date, Comcast shares have been about flat, slightly underperforming the S&P 500 index over that period.

The Journal commented that Trian is known for "encouraging changes at companies it targets, such as a breakup or sale of underperforming divisions or moves to improve efficiency and better use capital. It often seeks board representation and tries to avoid public spats, unlike some of its more pugnacious rivals."

Trian, which manages about $8.8 billion in assets, has a portfolio of companies including such prominent names as Tiffany (TIF), PepsiCo Inc. (PEP), Procter & Gamble (PG) and General Electric (GE).

However, Comcast may be difficult for Trian to influence as Brian Roberts, its chairman and chief executive officer, controls about one-third of the stock's voting rights.

Comcast's broadband internet unit has remained a strong business, but its media divisions, including NBCUniversal and the U.K.-based Sky, have suffered from declines in advertisement and other woes.

Comcast had faced criticism for overpaying for Sky to the tune of almost $39 billion two years ago. Comcast had earlier lost a bid to acquire Fox's entertainment assets - that deal went to Walt Disney Co. (DIS).

Agriculture Sec. Sonny Perdue: Meat Packing Plants Back to 100% Capacity in 7-10 Days

United States Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds on Wednesday said at the White House that meatpacking plants would return to full capacity in a week to ten days.

Reynolds and Perdue commented during a visit with President Donald Trump in the Oval office as fears of a meat shortage continue. Processing plants struggled to keep going amid coronavirus breakouts.

Reynolds thanked President Trump for acting quickly to use the Defense Production Act to declare the plants essential infrastructure. She said that Trump's action prevented meat producers from euthanizing their stock that could not be sold.

The president said he would ask the Justice Department to look into whether meat providers were boosting prices to benefit financially from meat shortages while some meat producers could not even sell their animals.

"They're looking into that very strongly ... why is there a disparity?" he asked.

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence said that resources would be surged to the plants to help protect the workers and put critical infrastructure in place.

When asked about reports of a meat shortage at Wendy's, Trump replied that he would call the CEO.

"I'm going to call Nelson Peltz," he said.

Media scribe Michael Wolff blasts New York magazine editor Adam Moss in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, labeling him a "very correct and humorless" editor who is essentially destroying the soul of the weekly.

Wolff, now a staff writer at VF, was an award-winning media pundit at New York before his ill-fated bid to acquire the weekly by teaming up with Mort Zuckerman, Nelson Peltz, Jeffrey Epstein, ad man Donny Deutsch and filmmaker Harvey Weinstein fell short.

The team had the backing of at least three billionaires, but was outmaneuvered by investment banker Bruce Wasserstein, who submitted an 11th-hour bid to buy the mag from Primedia in December 2003. Moss was hired to succeed Caroline Miller a month later.

The change under Moss "has been the most radical in New York's 40-year history," Wolff reported.

"It's repositioned itself as a worthy satellite of the New York Times," he wrote in Vanity Fair. "It's quality. Self-consciousquality. Ivy League quality. But it isn't funny. Not in the least. It's completely in earnest."

Wolff told The Post he feels the new direction will prove to be a "commercial disaster." His criticism comes as a segue in an overall piece, "No Jokes Please, We're Liberal."

"It's too bad that Michael is still disappointed about the way things turned out with the sale of New York magazine," said a spokeswoman for New York magazine. "We're sure he'll get over it someday."

Some sources speculate the magazine may be losing as much as $3 million or more a year, despite an 8 percent increase in ad pages last year to 2,651.98.

Circulation in the second half of 2004 was off 1.2 percent to 432,094, hit by a 9 percent dip in single copies. But in the recent National Magazine Awards, it was nominated in three categories.

New York did not comment on its profitability, but in the past, company executives said they expected the magazine to be profitable by the end of 2005.
